Melting Pot jest organizowany przez Jazztopad Festival (Narodowe Forum Muzyki we Wrocławiu), Jazzfest Berlin (Berliner Festspiele), Nasjonal jazzscene Victoria w Oslo, Handelsbeurs w Gandawie oraz Jazzfestival Saalfelden. Melting Pot is co-organised by: the Jazztopad Festival (National Forum of Music in Wrocław), the Jazzfest Berlin (Berliner Festspiele), the Nasjonal jazzscene Victoria in Oslo, the Handelsbeurs Concert Hall in Ghent and the Saalfelden Jazz Festival.

Melting Pot Made in Wrocław to inicjatywa, która jest wpisana w program Jazztopad Festival już od sześciu lat. W cyklu tym krzyżują się ze sobą różne dziedziny sztuki, prezentowane jest współczesne podejście do improwizacji. Do udziału w tegorocznej edycji Melting Pot Made in Wrocław zaproszono pięcioro wyjątkowych artystów z Danii, Niemiec, Polski i Belgii.

Zgodnie z ideą cyklu Melting Pot Made in Wrocław główną osią artystycznego spotkania jest spontaniczna kreacja „tu i teraz”. Ten wyjątkowy koncept, którego muzykom improwizatorom zazdroszczą zarówno instrumentaliści wykonujący historyczny repertuar klasyczny, jak i ci grający muzykę popularną, zakłada nieprzewidywalność zdarzeń. Emocje, jakie pojawiają się przed w pełni improwizowanym koncertem, są podobne do tych towarzyszących turyście wyruszającemu w wysokie góry. Poczucie ekscytacji wraz ze świadomością ryzyka stają się rodzajem wyzwania, które jest stawiane przed artystami i publicznością. W tegorocznej edycji Melting Pot Made in Wrocław we wspólną podróż w nieznane wybierze się pięcioro odkrywców, którzy pochodzą z różnych krajów i środowisk artystycznych, a do tego zajmują się różnymi dziedzinami sztuki. Więcej jednak ich łączy, niż dzieli – to przede wszystkim potrzeba poszukiwania i umiejętność przekraczania kolejnych granic, w sposób sztuczny wyznaczających poszczególne części sztuki. Wspólna dla całej piątki jest też artystyczna odwaga, która jest niezbędna do podejmowania bezkompromisowych działań twórczych. Tancerka, choreografka i wokalistka Ine Claes w swojej twórczości miesza różne dziedziny współczesnej sztuki, a jej działania przybierają formę bliską performance’owi. Jako improwizatorka korzysta z zapętleń i powtórzeń, a teksty utworów interpretuje w sposób niezwykle subiektywny. Miejscami występów Belgijki są zarówno sale koncertowe, jak i galerie sztuki oraz miejsca publiczne. Claes przez blisko pięć lat działała w ramach założonej wraz z Johanne Saunier inicjatywy Ballets Confidentiels. W zeszłym roku odeszła z grupy, ponieważ za priorytet uznała własne projekty. Łączenie dźwięku i ruchu (czasem także obrazu) czyni z niej współczesną artystkę multidyscyplinarną. Saksofonistkę i kompozytorkę Mię Dyberg ukształtowała kopenhaska scena muzyki improwizowanej. Jest współzałożycielką działającego od pięciu lat The Community – międzynarodowego zespołu zrzeszającego improwizatorów, który jest jednocześnie kolektywem organizującym muzyczne wydarzenia. Dunka obecnie stacjonuje w Berlinie, współtworząc jedno z najciekawszych i najbardziej kosmopolitycznych środowisk artystycznych w Europie. W ostatnich latach szczególnie dużo czasu poświęciła na projekty autorskie: duet z wokalistką Kamillą Kovacs, grupę Christian Balvig/Mia Dyberg feat. Clayton Thomas, trio prowadzone pod własnym nazwiskiem i projekt Dyberg 4 Ra poświęcony twórczości Sun Ra Arkestra. Artystka nie boi się eksperymentów, korzysta z niekonwencjonalnych technik wykonawczych, a w jej improwizacjach słychać zarówno europejskie korzenie, jak i nawiązania do tradycji chicagowskiego AACM.

Pianistka, kompozytorka i producentka Joanna Duda współtworzy popularny w Polsce zespół Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet i właśnie z tą grupą występuje najczęściej. Jednak to jej autorskie inicjatywy, które odchodzą od jazzu w stronę muzyki eksperymentalnej i współczesnej, wydają się dużo ciekawszym artystycznie kierunkiem. W projektach sygnowanych własnym nazwiskiem Duda znacznie częściej korzysta z elektroniki, czego przykładem może być ostatni krążek – Keen. Latem tego roku pianistka wraz ze swoim zespołem została zaproszona przez organizatorów wrocławskiego festiwalu do udziału w kanadyjskiej odsłonie Jazztopad Festival Presents, a obecnie reprezentuje Polskę w ramach pilotażowej edycji platformy Sound Out.

Dzięki Melting Pot Made in Wrocław festiwalowa publiczność kolejny raz może być świadkiem nieskrępowanych poszukiwań artystycznej wolności. Cykl, który ukazuje najciekawszych improwizatorów młodego pokolenia, pełni funkcję laboratorium, w którym materializuje się współczesne podejście do sztuki.

Melting Pot Made in Wrocław is an initiative that has been a regular feature of the Jazztopad Festival programme for six years. This cycle represents an intersection of various artistic genres and a presentation of a contemporary approach to improvisation. This year the Melting Pot Made in Wrocław concert features five exceptional artists from Denmark, Germany, Poland and Belgium.

In line with the idea behind Melting Pot Made in Wrocław, the essence of the artistic meeting is a spontaneous creation in the ‘here and now’. This exceptional idea, the premise of which is the unpredictability of things, is something that often stirs envy in pop artists and musicians performing classical repertoire. The emotions that appear before a fully improvised concert are similar to those a tourist experiences before tackling a hike on a high mountain trail: excitement combines with the awareness of risk to become something of a challenge faced by both the artists and the audience.

In this year’s edition of Melting Pot Made in Wrocław, the journey into the unknown will be made by five explorers from different countries and cultural circles, who are involved in different areas of art. But they have more in common than not: first and foremost, they share a need to explore and the ability to push the limits of art forms. The five also share artistic courage – something that’s necessary to undertake uncompromising creative tasks. The dancer, choreographer and singer Ine Claes combines various areas of contemporary art in her works, which take a form close to a performance. As an improviser she uses loops and repetitions, and interprets texts of compositions in an exceptionally subjective way. The Belgian artist performs at concert venues as well as in art galleries and public spaces. For almost five years Claes worked in the initiative Ballets Confidentiels, which she co-founded with Johanne Saunier, but last year she left the group in order to prioritise her own projects. Combining sound and movement (and sometimes also image), she is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist. The saxophonist and composer Mia Dyberg was moulded by Copenhagen’s improvised music scene. She is a co-founder of The Community – a five-year-old project that is both an international ensemble bringing together improvisers and, at the same time, a collective organising musical events. The Danish artist currently resides in Berlin, co-creating one of the most interesting and cosmopolitan artistic communities in Europe. In recent years, she has also paid a lot of attention to her own projects: the duo with the singer Kamilla Kovacs, the band Christian Balvig/Mia Dyberg feat. Clayton Thomas, the trio led under her name and the project Dyberg 4 Ra dedicated to the works of Sun Ra Arkestra. The artist is not afraid to experiment – she applies unconventional performance techniques, and her improvisations show both European roots as well as references to the traditions of the Chicago-based AACM. The pianist, composer and producer Joanna Duda co-creates Poland’s popular Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet and it is with this ensemble that she most often performs. However, it’s her own projects, moving away from jazz and towards experimental and contemporary music, that seem to be taking her in a much more interesting direction artistically. In her own projects Duda uses electronics a lot more often, as seen on the most recent album Keen. During the summer of this year the pianist and her band were invited by the organisers of the Wrocław festival to perform in the Canadian edition of Jazztopad Festival Presents, and currently she is representing Poland in the pilot edition of the Sound Out platform. Through Melting Pot Made in Wrocław the festival audience can once again witness unrestricted explorations of artistic freedom. The series, which showcases the most interesting improvisers of the younger generation, functions as a laboratory at which a modern approach to art is materialising.
