The Full Moon Newsletter Issue III Volume III December 1, 2015 1
A Message from the Editor Thank you for checking out the December issue of “The Full Moon!” Many more people wrote submitted articles which made this newsletter exciting to put together. It really puts it into perspective how busy and eventful of a month we actually had. With that being said, before everyone hibernates for winter once break hits I would like everyone to take the time reflect on how their semester went and how the next could go better with a few minor adjustments. I know old people tell us all of the time, but I also know that I don’t process things unless people nag me about it constantly. Finish strong and start next year stronger, happy holidays!

A Message from the President Happy holidays moviegoers! December is a month of fun, family, finals, more finals, and projects! As a close friend of mine once said, "Much to learn, you still have" - Yoda. He also once said, "You must unlearn what you have learned", so take his advice with a grain of salt. During this holiday season, we will be doing our best to accommodate our members with service events in both Las Vegas and Reno, so keep your eyes peeled! Also, check the Circle K Facebook group every once in a while for potential study places. Do your best on your finals everyone! Good luck, get just enough sleep, don't forget to eat, and study/work hard!

Upcoming Events Single Service: The Best Journey Always Takes Us Home Come support our very own Single Service Chair, Numfon Vilay, in hosting the our 3rd ever large scale service project! This single service project hosted by our club has consistently been ranked as one of the largest of most successful club hosted events in the Cal-Nev-Hi District. Over the past year , a lot of planning and work has gone into ensuring the success of this event. Participants in this event will be the strong women who have overcome various addictions and have graduated from the Step 2 Reno program and their children. Graduates of the Step 2 Reno program have not
only overcome their addictions, but have also proven that they are valuable members of the community by graduating the program with stable jobs and homes. We need as many volunteers as possible to operate arts and crafts, carnival games, and other festive activities to ensure that these very deserving families that are still trying to get on their feet can share the joy of Christmas with their young children. If you have any questions, please contact Numfon Vilay at singleservice@nevadacki.com for more details. I hope to see you all there to help support!

Single Service Workdays November 13th rolled around and it was the first single service workday I hosted. Only 5 members had shown up, but the work they did during the workday was still very impressive. We finished making 2 large signs, one for the photo booth and one for the Christmas themed room (Elves’ Arts & Crafts Station), 15 Christmas cards for the children, 10 snowflakes, and photo booth props. During the second single service workday, on November 16th, the attendance doubled with 12 members showing up to help me make more decorations for the event. On the third workday, attendance sky-
rocketed from 12 to 29 members and we managed to finish almost all the decorations giving us a lot of times to make Christmas gifts for the future workdays to come. Throughout every workday so far, the members of my club continue to pleasantly surprise me with their dedication and huge amounts of support they have for me and I will always truly appreciate everyone who has come to these workdays to help me so far. I am extremely excited for the actual event to see the members hard work on decorations be displayed all over the venue! Let's keep working hard and finish these last 3 workdays and last few weeks before the event with a BANG!

Service Passport to Dining Free food: the best term known to every college student. Service WITH free food? Even better. This past month, 20 lucky members, including myself, were able to help out with the annual event, Passport to Dining. Although the drive was long, and the weather a little chilly, with over 35 tasting stations from caterers and restaurants alike, it was difficult not to enjoy myself. We were assigned to help clear tables and trays, and any other duty that the staff saw fit. Being that Passport to dining is a silent auction, it was pretty interesting to see all of the things being auctioned off and, better yet, the amount that the attendees were willing to pay for such items. Yes, the broke college student in me was in awe. The variety of food at the event was also quite a treat. There were barbeque-covered ribs, decadent brownies, strawberry Article Submitted sherbets, chocolate ganache truffles…need I say more? Helping out by with the event turned out to be one of my most favorite events thus far, and one I highly suggest everyone to partake in! Annie Mae Flores

Football Concessions Peanuts! Get your peanuh…oh wait, we’re selling hamburgers? Hamburgers! Get your hot and bodacious hamburgers here! Football season as we know it, has officially come to an end. Over the past two and half months, we have volunteered for all six UNR home games, raising several hundreds of dollars towards our club’s District Fundraising Initiatives (DFI’s). For all but one of these games, where we sold hotdogs and pretzels, we have been put to the test in assembling and selling “Bodacious Burgers” to our always-hungry Wolf Pack fans. Over the past two football seasons we have been trusted to run the North Hamburger Stand and it has become a dear favorite to many of our volunteers. Our Vice-President of Administration, Jared, has become an expert at grilling up the burger patties to just the right juiciness and temperature. Our Technology Chair, Tyler, has taken up the name of “Fry Master,” making the French fries and chips to just the right amount of crispiness. Our very dedicated member, Aaron, has done an excellent job at cashiering and making sure our profits and inventory match up. Alyza, our Historian, has done exceptional work in making sure all the great memories made while volunteering are caught on camera. And of course, every week we have had continuous support from the rest of our members who help make sure we always have enough help. Football concessions has become one of my favorite events to volunteer at. Not only are we able to get into the game for free, but at the very end when our work is done, we have made it tradition to cook extra burgers for ourselves to eat and take home for later. It may get a little stressful, especially during halftime, but the other 95% of the time is full of fun and laughs. It is another great way to bond with your fellow Circle K’ers. For more information about volunteering for concession events, contact our lovely Treasurer who helps coordinate it, Amanda, for more details on how you can get involved.

Meet Your 2015 - 2016 Board: Christian Corabo Hey guys! My name is Christian Angelo Corabo and I am one of your Fund-
Co-Fundraising Chair
raising Co-Chairs! This will be my fifth year as a member of the Kiwanis Family. My time as a member and Vice President of my high school's Key Club inspired me to become a chair in Circle K. I chose to apply to be the Fundraising Chair because I wanted to begin giving back to a family that's done so much for my in the past four years. As Fundraising Chair, I plan to raise as much as my predecessors for our DFIs and raise more than they did for our admin funds which helps fund our club activities. Although easier said than done, I believe this goal will be very attainable with the help of my Co-Chair, Arosha Meegoda. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to seeing you in future events!

Nevada CKI New Member Installation This year’s New Member Install was one for the records. Our MD&E chair, Amie, put on quite the cinematic banquet for us to experience! Her hard work certainly did not go to waste. Over 30 new members attended along with fellow Capital members, including our very own Lieutenant Governor, Alex Ung. New and old members alike watched a brilliant slideshow created by our Technology chair, Tyler, and enjoyed several talent acts by our own members. Later, we had a raffle with awesome prizes to give away! Overall, as a returning member, I was elated to see new members have such a good time in Circle K so far. I hope to continue seeing them grow within the club and as individuals.

Reno Sunrisers Meetings This month, we didn’t really go to too many meetings, but the meetings we did go to were pretty great. Last Friday, we had our Kiwanis Takeover, and that was a blast. The meeting before that, we had a phenomenal guest speaker. Every time I go to a Kiwanis Meeting, it’s so nice to get to know the Kiwanians and listen to the diversity of their meetings. I can see that they are different from ours because they have more raffle tickets! But, I still enjoy them. Also, another great perk of going is the free breakfast that the generous Kiwanians pay for us. I highly recommend going despite the event being at 7am. It’s worth it.

Kiwanis Takeover On November 20, Kiwanis Takeover 2015 was held at the Gold and Silver Inn from 7am to 8:15am. Every year, Kiwanis Turnover is a wonderful event that gathers the Kiwanians and the Nevada Circle K’ers (about twenty members) for a breakfast meal with free networking and great memories with one another. With the amount of donations that were received for the audition this time, Nevada Circle K raised over five hundred dollars with the rum cake hitting the jackpot to be sold at a hundred five dollars. Overall, it was a successful event and everyone enjoyed their meal as well as spending time with each other during the time they had. Thanks to Mickey, our Kiwanis Family Chair, for putting such an amazing event for all of us to share.

Duck, Duck, K-Kids! For the month of November, Alyza was the K-kids chair and she did an amazing job. The kids were super rowdy as always, but the many mentors and Alyza did great gathering the kids and making sure they behaved. We did a lot of activities this month that the kids really enjoyed. We played sharks and minnows (a cool variation of tag where the kids envision themselves as animals), and we played duck, duck, goose. These kids apparently love this game! They’re getting more and more creative when it comes to tagging mentors and their peers. Sometimes
they don’t even get up, and they somehow tag the person. It’s really fun to watch, and the mentors get really into it too. If you are free Fridays at noon and you love playing games with kids, this service event is perfect for you! It is really fun, and any of the mentors can vouch for me! Oh, and don’t forget to congratulate Alyza on an incredible job chairing this month!

Fellowship Editorial: The Current State of Family Affairs Aside from the fact that I can’t think of anything specifically to put in the fellowship section, I would just like to take the time to recognize how awesome of the job family heads have been doing lately! Families have been extremely active over the past semester and it is a great thing to see our club bonding with each other and our new members so well! I urge you all to keep up the positive momentum over break; for now here are some family pictures to reflect on how well things have gone thus far!

CNH District Fall Training Conference So this year, was my first time attending Fall Training Conference. The theme was Sail Away with Service. I honestly didn’t know what to expect. The drive there was
not the best part because I got so car sick, but when we got to Old Oak Ranch Campsite in Senora, California, I knew the fun would begin. Raphaela, Dayna, Rachel, and I started by settling into our cabin and then checking in and getting our spirit packs, which were real cute! After the opening session, Mickey and I had to start our SAA shift. The next day was full of workshops and activities. We started off by getting in to separate groups. I was in the Quartermasters…*cough* we were the best *cough*. We made up cheers and ate together. I think the
workshop I learned the most from was the secretary section of the E-board. I figured out that in order for to be a cohesive group, we just had to listen to each other and not put personal feelings in front of us. The food the whole weekend was amazing! I had a lot of fun getting to catch up with friends in Capital as well as making new ones in sunny CNH. It was a wonderful experience that everyone should know about!
