Reflections

August DCM at the Sacramento Zoo Sarah Ko | Single Service Chair | UNR Circle K

Throughout the 2017-2018 Circle K year, I would have to say that my favorite service event ever was the August DCM at the Sacramento Zoo. It was a day full of service, comradery, and monkeys! The day started with us driving about 2.5 hours from Reno to the event site. Once there we were assigned different revitalization tasks like painting benches and walls, pulling weeds, and even helping clean animal cages. After the event we had our DCM. It was nice seeing all of the other clubs in Capital Division. I think the thing that made this event so memorable was the large amount of cute monkeys, and I am not talking about the Circle K members, that the zoo had! They were so adorable and just so full of energy. I wasn’t a huge monkey fan until volunteering at this event.

Color Me Rad Tre Soultz | Treasurer | UNR Circle K

Color Me Rad has always been one of our club’s most popular events and it also happens to be one of my personal favorites. I mean what’s not to love about throwing colored cornstarch at people? It’s such a fun and color event that you can’t help but laugh and smile throughout the whole event. Plus you also get to go home all decked out in color. I think another reason why I love this event is because the event coordinators are also really nice. They genuinely want us to have a fun time. Every year that I have volunteered, they have bought us pizza! I can’t wait to volunteer again!

Relay for Life Joan Casabar | Secretary | UNR Circle K

Even though Relay for Life happened in the beginning of the year, it has had a huge impact on me. I think just seeing everyone in our club come together for such an impactful event as one unified team was very inspiring. This event raises money for the American Cancer Foundation while also creating awareness of this terrible disease. One of my favorite parts of this event is when we light up the luminaria bags at night. It is so cool because the bags are specifically placed in a way that reveals a message of hope. I love how this event is used as a means of strengthening people and to show people that we are a united front in the cancer fight. All of the members in our club stayed strong, stayed motivated, and we stayed awake for the twelve hours of this event to show cancer that you can not break us apart!!

Kiwanis Family Reflections

Key to College Daniel theerasin | Kiwanis Family Chair | UNR Circle K

This event was the most stressful event that I have ever planned in my life, but it was also the most rewarding. When I was a Key Clubber back in High School I attended UNLV’s Key to College and it honestly prepared me so much for college. I thought that it was my turn to hopefully help these Key Clubbers as much as I could. The event from the planning phase to end was very stressful but I think it was mostly because I set really high standards for myself. In all reality the event was very successful and really not as challenging as I made it out to be. The Key Clubbers had a blast and a lot told me that I have done a great job of preparing them for college. It warmed my heart knowing that I was able to help them prepare for college. Who knows maybe one day one of those Key Clubbers will be planning their own Key to College.

Kiwanis Takeover Calvin Lu | Kiwanis Family Chair | UNR Circle K

As much as I love waking up at 6AM to attend 7 AM meetings - oh wait - I don’t, but my love for Kiwanians surpasses my need for sleep. Seeing Kiwanians honestly brightens my days and I always end up feeling better after the meetings than when I did walking in. The 2017 Kiwanis Takeover was no different, it was just as great as any other Kiwanis gathering, but this time there was a breakfast buffet! So after doing our fun ice breaker where we taught Kiwanians how to dab, we all ate from the yummy breakfast buffet which was all payed for from our sponsoring Kiwanis Club - the Reno Sunriser’s. Whilst everyone was eating, we held our annual bake sale auction! We had a variety of prizes including blankets, homemade desserts, and even some cool artworks made by the members of Circle K. We ended up raising a lot of money which was utilized by our club to help fund the rest of the year.
