LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Reader, Happy holidays! While we look forward at what’s to come, this newsletter’s of course here too to help us look back at what we’ve seen — and we sure have seen a lot! We’ve come a long way this term, from Fall Training Conference to New Member Installation Banquet. It feels like just yesterday the old members tested their leadership skills recruiting new members and the new members tested their social skills meeting us! With elections coming (and soon board appointments), remember to check our board bios! See what current leaders wrote, then ask them how you might fit! We’re nearing the last leg our of journey now. Two months left! Enjoy, all. Sincerely,
Daniel Lang

White Elephant Gift Exchange
On September 9, 2016, Circle K held a Zumba dance social in room 4001 of the William Raggio Building on campus. Hours prior to the event, I woke up from my daily mid-day nap finding myself fairly anxious, yet excited about dancing with my peers. Initially, it was so exciting to me because dancing is a fun, legitimate way to do cardio exercises. However, it was also nerveracking because I have never really danced. Immediately upon entering, I heard the upbeat music that filled the entire room. There were so many members there and it filled my heart with joy and excitement. After searching the rows of people, I spotted my friend, Audrey Roman, and went to join her as she was dancing her soul out in the second row. She, along with everyone else, was doing an amazing job at following the instructor’s moves. At first, it was pretty intimidating. I ended up sneakily moving to the back of the room so that nobody could see me. Starting to dance was a tad awkward and unnatural for me, but I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone and join in on the fun! After about two or three songs with water breaks, I was really enjoying myself. I gradually became comfortable again and was slightly getting into the swing of things. I am positive that I still looked like a fool, but Amie Schlageter was really kind and assuaged my fears by reassuring me that I wasn’t doing badly and that I was actually doing well. That is when I really let loose and stopped caring as much about how people would react to my dancing. I was exercising and having fun at the same time. It was extremely stress-relieving to me and that is all that I cared about.

Fellowship
By the end, I wished we could do just one more song. We took a group picture then parted ways. Overall, I thought it was an amazing experience and I am really glad that I went. We had a skilled, friendly instructor who managed to come up with Zumba dance moves that were not too intense for our experience levels but intense enough to make us sweat and thirst for water. It was an excellent way to burn off calories while simultaneously talking and laughing with friends. 10/10 would recommend.
Our board started it off with a rather somber moment, commenting on how three of our members, who were foreign exchange students from Japan, would be returning to their home country after having spent a semester with us. In order to brighten up the mood and send them off with a smile, our board had gotten three different stuffed animals for the three girls to take home with them. They were passed around and everyone left a message on each one. Our white elephant started off with everyone simply picking from the pile of gifts one at a time. Eventually, under the barrage of members chanting “STEAL! STEAL! STEAL!”, all civil talks broke down as strong bonds between friends were broken and gifts were stolen left and right. I had purchased a small VR headset for mobile phones as my white elephant gift. Our board had asked that we buy gifts which we wouldn’t mind receiving ourselves. However, I may have taken this too seriously. I decided that, when I got the chance, I would steal back my gift from whoever had taken it. After all, they did ask me to buy something I would like to receive. Despite my best efforts, my plan failed and I ended up stealing an awesome painting, a gingerbread house set, and three condoms. It wasn’t how I thought my first semester would end; however, it certainly was an enjoyable and fun filled final event.

New Member Installation Banquet
On a breezy November Sunday afternoon, Nevada CKI held our annual New Member Installation Banquet put together by our MD&E Chair, Siena Montero. From a board member's perspective, we were really stressed out because some things weren't going as planned, which ultimately put us behind schedule. But once we got things rolling, the event went really well. I performed twice, once as a solo dance performance and another as a group singing performance dedicated to our graduates of Fall 2016. In addition, we had other talented performances by special guests from Sac State, Bunny Mo, Calvin Lu, Natsuki Yamaguchi and Kuri Okada, and Rise of the Titans. We also showcased our award winning FTC video and our "The Office" inspired board video which was a collaboration between me and my fellow members. Finally, the respective family heads from each family and our President, Amie Schlageter, installed all the new members that were present. To celebrate, all of the families had a dance off with old and new members alike. We ended the event by inviting everyone on the dance floor to dance the night away... or at least until it was time to clean up. Overall, getting to dress nice to take pictures with friends, eating good food, and socializing with each other are just part of what makes this event a highlight every year. On behalf of the Nevada CKI board, I would like to thank all the guests that attended especially our new members that made this event successful. See you all in the new year!
