By Carlester Cabral Relay for Life 2017 took place on April 22nd in the John Sala Intramural Fields from 10am to 10pm. Relay for Life is a 12 hour event to fight against cancer. The feel and livelihood of the event has been on a steady decline over the past couple years however this does not stop everyone from coming out and supporting this wonderful event. Throughout the day, the plethora of events and competitions did not stop. From Buffalo Wild Wing’s Blazin Wing Challenge to Zumba dancing, all the participants in this Relay for Life were entertained for the whole 12 hours. One group of participants in particular created a pixelated board of the Relay for Life symbol and a countless amount of flags from countries around the world. The goal of this group was for participants to pin a pixel for every lap being completed. Although the entire board was not fully completed, it is fresh and original ideas such as these that keep Relay for Life floating. Towards the end of the event, the hosts of Relay for Life brought everyone together for lighting of the candles ceremony. This ceremony was not only to remember the ones lost from cancer but to tell the world that the community will never stop fighting against cancer until there is a cure. The heartwarming ceremony brought some to tears to some and a lot of hope for others.

Walk for Animals by Amada Aviles

Waking on the day of the event, on August 12, 2017, I felt that it was going to be the best day ever. Being a dog lover and owner of several dogs already, I just knew I had to attend this event. The idea of being able to get community service hours just by playing with puppies I was super exited to get there that I even locked my keys in my car...(oops) Thankfully everything paid off because I met lots of cute doggies. The event itself was very easy and laid-back compared to some of our other events because all we really did was help the event coordinators and attendees walk their dogs along the course and run the registration table. We also helped with set-up and breakdown. This event was so fun and I can’t wait for it again next year!

Division Service Project: Sacramento Zoo Cleanup By: Lauro Solomo

UN Reno started the Fall Semester with service, along with other Circle K members throughout the entire Capital Division. Our departure to the Sacramento Zoo was quite early but the energy and enthusiasm we had outshone the bright, hot sun of that afternoon. The tasks we were given were simple (i.e. weed pulling, raking leaves, etc.) but by the end of our time spent volunteering, we noticed a significant change in the overall appearance of the zoo! Dirt paths were no longer littered with fallen leaves and unsightly weeds no longer obstructed the view of some animal exhibits. It was an enjoyable experience, especially seeing everyone having fun, and if there was one lesson to be learned from this event, it comforts me to know that this year started strong‌ and it will only get stronger as UN Reno intends to soar above expectations - all the way to the stars!

More Event Recaps Kings Beach Fireworks “Kings Beach Fireworks Helping at Tahoe was a phenomenal experience. I got to learn that even if I'm good at drawing, painting kids faces is hard. Thankfully we all helped each other finish just in time to see the fireworks.” -Amada Aviles

Kick off to Summer “Although finals were around the corner, nothing can stop Nevada Circle K members from providing service to the community. Being able to watch the children enjoyed their time with the bouncy houses, participating in crafts and activities, and preparing for the summer heat ahead was a great way to acknowledge that summer was near.

-Shirley Siu (Vice President of Administration)

International Dragon Boat Festival “Less thank 24 hours into Reno and I somehow ended up volunteering. Luckily for me, the International Dragon Boat Festivals was such a blast. My initial job was to help paddlers in and out of the dragon shaped boats right before each team was supposed to start their heat of the race. Since some teams were missing members I had the amazing opportunity to actually paddle in some of the boats! The team I was placed on actually won first place during the second round!!”

-Mickey Rosal (PR Chair)

Leadership July Camping DCM

Join a Committee Lead a Committee

July Camping DCM By Raul Esteves

July Camping DCM was amazing because it's my first time holding such a big event with an awesome co-chair named Ryan Su and our committee members. It was such an impactful event because many members had such a great time.

We had many fun activities, delicious food, and fulfilling stargazing. We started the day with activities which involved extreme teamwork games such as running away from roleplaying zombies to mafia murders! The individual clubs gave excited updates about what they did over the months, as well as shared their experiences.

Towards the end of the day, we had roasted marshmallows and Smores! Some groups of members walked together at an open spot to see the starry night. People told stories, everyone was chilling, it was just a fine time.

District Fundraising Initiatives DPDC CKIx CKI North Fall Training Conference ●

District Fundraising Initiatives (DFIs) Every year CNH Circle K raises thousands of dollars for our three charities. Learn about them below:

The Pediatric Trauma Program hopes to raise funds in order to promote community outreach, assist partner hospital, and to provide advanced medical training for doctors. The funds raised will go towards the end goal of preventing unintentional injury and death and to provide safety items for children around the world.

The KFH seeks to provide housing for families of ill or injured children staying at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. Funds raised for this cause help provide additional resources and improve the stay for these families so that they may be there to support their children.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the is the nation’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.

District Professional Development Conference By: Christine Almendras

From August 4th to 5th, clubs from all over CNH District came together to learn about professionalism and “adult responsibilities” at the District Professional Development Conference! Some members and I had the pleasure of attending this event, where we learned how to network with Kiwanians, write a resume, interview etiquette and many more. We even learned how to lead a meeting using Robert’s Rules, and we decided what we were going to eat on Saturday afternoon. This took longer than expected, I might add. Overall, I had a lot of fun at this event! It was a little bit stressful cooking all the food Friday night, but I’m glad everything went as expected. I definitely learned some new networking skills that I will be using in the future!

CKIx: International Convention By: Numfon Vilay

CKIx 2017: This was my second year at an international convention and I have to say just like last year, it did not disappoint. This year it was held in San Antonio, Texas! Convention this year actually meant a lot to me because I was able to be part of the CKIx Planning Committee as the Projects chair and seeing the convention I helped plan with my committee come to life was something worthwhile! On Thursday morning we all went out to 6 different volunteer sites with one of them being our signature project, the San Antonio Food Bank where our ultimate goal with these projects was to help with the San Antonio Sustainability Plan. I was extremely happy that a majority of attendees enjoyed the projects I spent all year planning! House of Delegates, as always, was intense, but very eye opening because you always get to see how other districts think and work, which gives you a whole new perspective on CKI. All in all I had an amazing time getting to bond with people in CNH as well as people from all over CKI during convention and would highly recommend that you attend at least one!
