Service

Pumpkin Palooza Lydia Navarrete | Technology Chair | UNR Circle K

The 6th Annual Pumpkin Palooza was held in Victorian Square on Sunday, October 22nd from 11am 5pm. This event aims to raise awareness and funds for the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living, which helps people living with disabilities. The event has many vendors that come to sell food and goods as well as midway games, face painting, and crafts for children and their families. Nevada CKI has been volunteering at this event for over 3 years. We help by setting up and taking down booths and games, running midway games, and giving prizes. This event attracts over 11,000 visitors from the local community and is only made possible by the help of many volunteers.

JUSTin Hope’s Christmas Family Party Lydia Navarrete | Technology Chair | UNR Circle K

The JUSTin HOPE Foundation is an organization that aims to help Northern Nevada families with children that have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders. The Christmas Party is an annual event where children get to meet and take pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Clause, choose several gifts, participate in crafts, and eat some snacks. Volunteers helped to set-up and clean-up the event, which took place at a local fire station on Friday, October 15th. Volunteers also helped to check in guests, give out raffle tickets, and help children pick out their gifts. It was a really great event for our local community.

Leadership â—?

University of Nevada, Reno Circle K Website Lydia Navarrete | Technology Chair | UNR Circle K

CKI unveiled their new website this semester and a fresh new design. The website has a lot of information about getting involved in our three tenets of service, leadership, and fellowship. Stay updated with our goal tracker to see how many hours we’ve achieved towards our goals and take a look at the members we highlight for being outstanding each month. Take a look at all the great pictures and videos we take at our events too! Students looking for information about Circle K International, the CalNev-Ha district, or capital division can find useful information and helpful links. Need to sign up for an event? No problem! Our calendar as well as the sign-up sheet are conveniently located under the calendar tab. If you need to fill out a form, missed the last meeting, or are confused about our many acronyms, you can find it all in the resources tab! Visit us today at https://tinyurl.com/UNRCKI.

Fellowship

White Elephant Party Raelynn Dela Cruz | Historian | UNR Circle K

At the end of the fall semester, Circle K’s White Elephant took place after the general meeting held on December 6, 2017. This is one of the meetings members look forward to, because not only do they get to walk away with a present (or a lump of coal…), they get to share the joy of the holidays with their fellow members! This is an exciting time where everyone has the chance to interact with one another before the start of winter break. White Elephant is an event similar to Secret Santa, where members all bring a wrapped present to make them anonymous, receive a number, and open them in order. The catch here is that any of the items that have already been opened can potentially be stolen up to 3 times when it is one’s turn! It is up to both strategy and luck for people to nab the items in most demand, and end up with them permanently. This time around, there were a few heated blankets and a CrockPot up for grabs, so can imagine how intense the scene was! Despite anything that happened and whatever the members received that night, the holidays are about spending time with those you love, and that’s exactly what they got to do. But it doesn’t hurt to get something a little nice every now and then!

Sparks Kiwanis Bike Shop Daniel Theerasin | Kiwanis Family Chair | UNR Circle K

Every other Friday the club volunteers at the Sparks Kiwanis Bike Shop. The Kiwanis Bike Shop is a non-profit whose goal is to offer free to low-cost bikes for kids in the Reno/ Sparks community. They also hold a variety of educational events geared towards bike and road safety. Our job as Circle K-ers is to offer assistance to our fellow Kiwanians whenever necessary. On our most recent trip, we were in charge of stripping the old bikes. This means that we would inspect the donated bikes and only keep the parts we needed. We probably went through at least 20 different bikes tearing apart wheels, and handles, and seats! With these parts they will assemble new books to give out to the community. We always love volunteering with the Sparks Kiwanians because they always make us feel special and always remind us of the huge impact that we are making for the kids in our communities.

International District Division

Capital Division Webinar Series:

Taking Over the World on a Budget Mickey Rosal | Public Relations Chair | UNR Circle K With the help of my wonderful Vice President of Administration, Shirley Siu, we held a fun and informative workshop entitled Taking Over the World on a Budget. The workshop’s purpose was to educate college students how easy and affordable traveling could be. We tackled a range of subjects including how to buy cheap airplane tickets, picking a location, a packing list to name just a few. I love how the Capital Division is setting up these webinars to educate their members. What is also really cool is how these webinars are available to everyone including non-CKI members. I had some friends from Japan listen in too! I think my favorite part about the whole presentation was when I made a slip-up when I was talking and accidentally said I brought a 12-ft long sandwich onto the airplane when in reality it was a 12-inch sandwich. The comment section was hilarious and someone even photoshopped a picture of me holding a 12--ft long sandwich in an airplane. If you would like to listen to the webinar, you can find a recording of it in the Capital Division Youtube page!

Capital Division Webinar Series:

CKI North Tre Soultz | Treasurer | UNR Circle K

Crazy Kompetition for Infants North took place on October 7th this year in Tahoe Park, California. It was an experience to remember with over 200 Circle K members from multiple divisions within the CNH District. Crazy Komp for Infants is basically an annual large scale event where Circle K’ers participate in team events to help raise funds for the Pediatric Prevention Program (PTP) which works to prevent unintentional physical trauma from affecting children under the age of 12 through education and research on better safety methods and protective gear. The comradery you find with other Circle K members is truly unbelievable at these kind of large scale events and really goes to show the reach and support our organization has for others inside and out of our community. My favorite part of this event is getting to go out and physically interact with other members in out district. Being from UNR we don’t get to see/meet other members from out of state as much as we would like and district events like these are what brings us all together and truly makes us a whole.
