A Message from the Editor

Howdy! It’s a new edition of “The Full Moon”. I hope everyone’s semester has had a strong start so far, because just like the Wild West, it’s getting to the time of the year where we all have to pony up hold on to our hats. It’s easy to slow down with many changes still to come in the Spring semester, but just remember to always keep your eye on the prize. Whether that be going for a board position, doing better in school, or even just staying beautiful, do it with confidence!

Wanted: New Club Board Members! Go For Board! Hello moviegoer, as you may have realized through my constant mentioning at meeting, elections are coming up super soon! Appointments shortly after! It means that old farts like me are going to be retiring so that all you new and returning general members can give it a shot! You may be thinking, “Why should I go for board?” There’s a million reasons why you should do it, so I’ll give you a little story of why I ran board. When I was a freshman like 30 years ago, I decided to join Circle K to make friends and do something meaningful in the process. I was a super shy, awkward, and weird guy. One of the current board members at the time thought I was a “douche” because I was so unresponsive whenever she tried to talk to me. As I got more and more involved in the club by attending out-of-state events and every service event I could get my hands on, I fell more and more in love with the club. The board members at the time really inspired me to become a better leader and be less awkward with both public speaking and conversational speaking. So after some encouragement from the current board members, I decided to apply for Membership Development and Education chair. For those who are not aware, this is one of the most social and talkative positions on board, since you are required to know all of the members of the club, run the family system, and plan New Member Installation. My time as MD&E was a crazy growing experience that allowed me to grow into the person I am today, a still awkward but confident individual. The next year I ran for Vice President of Administration, and the year after that I ran for President. All of these positions have been hugely impactful to my development as a leader and I have greatly enjoyed my time as an officer. If you want an experience that is fun, challenging, yet incredibly satisfying and rewarding, then you should go for board. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything in the world, and owe so much to Circle K for what being an officer has done for me. So GO FOR BOARD!!! There are so many opportunities, and I’m sure there’s at least one position that you would enjoy doing. Talk to the current board members to get a better feel for what each position does. Also, feel free to talk to me if you know you want to go for board, but are unsure as to what you want to go for! I’ve been around for far too long and can help point you in the right direction :). Nominations are February 10th, and elections are February 17th.

Service Single Service: The Best Journey Always Takes Us Home "As part of the Single Service Core committee, I had the great experience of being able to help plan Nevada CKI's large scale service event for the 2015 Fall semester. There were many hours put into planning and preparing for this event. The core committee worked tirelessly to coordinate the efforts of all the Circle K members in order to make workdays productive, and the single service event a success. As the Executive Assistant, I felt that the event was a test of my leadership skills, as I was responsible for any tasks that the Single Service chair, Numfon, delegated to me. All in all, carrying out the single service event to provide a happy holiday for the mothers of Step 2 and their children was truly fulfilling."

Article Submitted by Vence Quirante On December 12th, our very own Single Service chairwoman Numfon Vilay and the Single Service Committee held the annual Single Service Project, named “The Best Journey Always Takes Us Home.” This event took place at the Step 2 campus, in which Step 2 is an organization for women recovering from drug addiction to get back on their feet. The event in itself was loads of fun, we set up all the awesome decorations made during the work days, held an AWESOME carnival for the kids (we had ornament making and cookie decorating just to name a couple of activities). After the carnival was over, we had the opportunity to hear the stories of the alumni and how Step 2 changed their lives for the better, that is, brought them “back home”. I believe that the women sharing their stories was the focal point of this service event and everyone (the mothers and children as well as the administration) was so grateful that we put on this event! Overall, I have to say, this was by far the most humbling and wonderful event I attended so far in my Circle K tenure.

Meet Your 2015 - 2016 Board: Ashley Hill Hello everyone! I am your 2015-2016 club secretary. I hope you all are enjoy-

Secretary

ing your break so far~ I know I am, just relaxing and even doing a little Circle K work. I’ve been in the Kiwanis family for about 4 years now, and I think my Circle K experience so far has been the best. I’m only a second year, but I feel like I’ve accomplished so much as secretary. I did mention doing some work over the break, and what I was doing was updating all of the member’s hours! It’s extremely important that I get member hours updated in a timely manner or else I could get really behind (: Another thing that I do is send monthly reports to the district so they know what our club has been up to every month. It seems like a daunting job, but someone has to do it and it’s honestly so rewarding! When I’m feeling stressed out about my work, circle k and otherwise, I usually stay in bed and binge watch something on Netflix or read a book to get myself away from reality. Anyways, I hope you all are doing great and have a great rest of break and see you in a couple weeks!

Kiwanis Family Sparks Kiwanis Club Parade Float On December 5th, five of us Circle K’ers went to Sparks to help out the Sparks Kiwanis Club decorate their float and to pass out books to children along the way during the parade. When we got there, it was freezing cold and of course, I forgot gloves…But, it’s okay because we stayed warm by walking around and decorating. When the parade started, we sat on the back of the float until we had to get off and start handing out books to the little children along the way. We started handing out books at the start of the parade and there were so many little kids there on each side. It was really hard to hand out books to every single little one out there because I would run out of books, run over to the float to get more and then the cycle would start over again. By the end of the parade through Victorian Square, there was still a bit of books left, but we ended up giving them all away. I loved seeing the smiles on all the children’s faces when they got a free book; it reminds me that children still want to read and to learn.

White Elephant Gift Exchange ‘Twas the last CKI meeting of the Wolf Pack 2015. All the members were stirring, all festive with glee. As I entered with gift, a ticket I was given. We arranged our chairs in a vast circle ‘round a table — buried, it was, in our gifts. They ranged in every size, from tiny boxes to huge bags. Quality of wrapping, too, excelled in diversity; some gifts showed pristine precision of a master while others dared for the iconic, ironic look. So heaped upon the table were the gifts that they covered every inch. Historian Alyza Mijares roamed as photographer while all around the circle members buzzed with excitement. Silence fell. The first number was called. Carefully, cautiously members crept to the stand, stealing away with gifts now in hand. But the thefts were real. “JUST DO IT!” CKI cried. “Put ‘em up!” they shouted. O, the prizes they snatched! People formed alliances, striking nefarious deals. Notably contested were many a fine plush doll and the assortments of luscious chocolates. Indeed, an actual vacuum and an actual toaster were among the gifts. At least three Adele albums found new homes that evening, as well as the charming, inspired, riveting text: “Fifty Shades of Chicken.” Our own advisor Dr. Derek Furukawa stole from me. I walked away with The Joker Batman-Batman Pop vinyl figure and a Simpson’s wallet. The night came to a close with a final gift of a card to Starbucks. Happy Holidays to all, and to all a great break!
