I hope you’re ready for a summer full of service projects and interclub socials as the semester ends in less than two weeks! Over the next few months, our club will be having events in both Reno and Las Vegas—members in Las Vegas will have the opportunity to connect with UNLV Circle K members at events such as Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend Weekends (W.A.W. Weekends) while members in Reno will continue making trips to our fellow Capital clubs in Sacramento, Davis, and Stockton. More details about additional summer events will be revealed in the upcoming weeks, so check your email periodically throughout the break. In other news, I want to take this time to say congratulations to all of our newly appointed board members and to give kudos to the board for their contributions toward the success of the club. For members wishing to get more involved with our club and Circle K as a whole for the upcoming year, I encourage all of you to: stay active over the summer, join a club committee, and apply for one or more of the 7 remaining District Committees! That’s all I have for now! Good luck on finals and I hope you enjoy the rest of this newsletter! Sincerely, Aldrin M. Santamaria 2

Service Kiwanis Bikes 1 Year Anniversary After Kiwanis One Day on April 5th, 2014, Nevada Circle K went to help out our Downtown Sparks Kiwanis Bike Shop to celebrate their one year anniversary of their current location. This celebration was a way to let the community know that the Kiwanians and their bikes are there for them! The day was filled with some games, amazing food and satisfaction of bikes in all kinds of conditions (also known as “man-cravings”). I have been to Bike Shop a few times throughout the spring semester and I enjoy going there, even if we don’t always fix bikes. The Bike Shop celebration was amazing and went as smoothly as possible. The kids were able to take a tour of the shop as well as work on arts and crafts with our volunteers. I am so happy to have been a part of a large celebration for something I enjoy going to. - Gaby Murata, Secretary
Kiwanis One One Day Day Kiwanis Kiwanis One Day is an international event where Kiwanis Family members all around the world gather to do service. Here in the Reno/Sparks area, we all gather at Manzanita Park for a park restoration. This year, we had over 100 volunteers from Kiwanis, Circle K, and Key Club. “Kiwanis One Day is my favorite service project every year!” - Alyssa Yocom, Kiwanis Family Relations Chair “Kiwanis, Circle K, and Key Club, what do all these have in common? They are all a part of the wonderful organization known as the Kiwanis Family. On Saturday, April 5 th, our Nevada Circle K members headed to Manzanita Park to work on a park beautification project with members of our local Reno Sunrisers Kiwanians and Key Clubs in the area, known as our annual Kiwanis One Day service event. At the service project, we assisted by painting the facility, weeding nearby, picking up rubbish around the area, and raking the softball field and volleyball court. Around noon, we had a lunch break and were able to socialize with both Kiwanians and Key clubbers. After lunch, we had a volleyball challenge between the Kiwanians, Key clubbers, and Circle K’ers. Overall, it was an amazing day that allowed our members to interact and bond with other branches of our Kiwanis Family. ”

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Card Making The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is at Renown Hospital. There, mothers and infant children are supported by resources, great care, and great support. A neonatal baby is a baby that is born prematurely and often these babies have a tough time surviving. Luckily, there are care units for this. One thing that Renown is really good at is getting the community involved. Circle K stepped up to provide additional support to the families with a neonatal baby by making cards. These cards contained words of inspiration and hope. They were delivered to the NICU unit at Renown Hospital. Thank you to those of you who took time after one Wednesday’s meeting to help make these cards. Your time and your cards will be appreciated by many families in need or extra encouragement. Alyza Mijares, Member
K-Kids
Recess – such a blissful time that is forgotten in school as a person ages. That is all changed with KKids. This program is your opportunity to become a kid again. Every Friday is a new experience when you go to Lemelson Stem Academy and visit all of the KKids here. Each child brings a unique personality and it’s wonderful to get to know everyone. My favorite moment in K-Kids is when we get to do activities with them. One week we had to link hands and get a hula hoop around the circle. It was funny to watch many people get their groove on trying to get through the hula hoop. K-Kids is a wonderful experience that everyone should try! Check it out next Friday from 11:15am12:15pm! - Sarah Smith, MD&E Chair
Relay for Life “Relay for Life, which occurred on April 18th, was one of those life changing events that our club got to experience. It was astonishing to see our club (over 50 members!!!) come together for the fight. Cancer never sleeps, so for one night, neither did we. Instead, we walked laps, ate food, dressed up members like girls, and raised money. Some members even completed 20 miles (shout out to Amanda & Jared) which is a crazy amount to complete in less than twelve hours. From the first lap of the night, to the luminaria ceremony where we all linked arms and walked as one around the track, it was one of those nights that not many will forget. As if that was not already enough, as a club, we managed to raise over $4,000. That is a lot of money going to the American Cancer Society, and it could not have been done without all our amazing members (just like you!). In whole, this year’s Relay for Life raised over $31,000, which is an amazing feat. As one committee member said, when they find the cure for cancer, we can all say we were a part of the fight. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for making my last event as fundraising chair a successful and memorable one, and hope you all don’t stop relaying for the cure until it’s found.” Shayla Starcheski, Relay for Life Chair Want to hear and see more about relay? UN Reno Circle K goes the distance to fight cancer at this year’s Relay for Life. This all nighter was from 6:00pm-6:00am and it was full of walking, running, activities, fundraisers, and some of the most beautiful Mr. Relay (wo)men you have ever seen! Shout out to Jared Apostol and Amanda Tran for completing 20 miles! Many of those miles were ran, and our club is so proud of you.
Mr. Relay participants. Do these ladies look familiar to you? Congratulations on raising $127! “Most clubs struggle getting one participant for Mr. Relay. Circle K struggles getting less than four.” - Derek Furukawa, Faculty Advisor.

Chairing an Event
Leadership When people say chairing an event is the best way and the first step to showing off your leadership skills, they aren’t kidding. When I chaired my first event (Reno Wedding Faire), I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing. Other than contacting everyone for carpool and CERFing the event, I was overwhelmed at first. But, after having Shayla, Reena, and Miwako help me, it became a lot easier. I highly recommend chairing an event to anyone who wants to step up to the service plate! It’s easy once you get the hang out it, plus you get to know even more people in your club! - Gaby Murata, Secretary Do you feel passionate about a certain cause or event? Are you interested in leading and organizing a project? Do you enjoy working with people? Chairing an event is for you!! Contact any board officer for more details.
April 11-13, Circle K members from the northern part of our district gathered together to SAA at CNH Key Club’s District Convention. From 11pm to 3am, we roamed halls and made sure things were in order. In addition to this, we participated in a College EXPO to give Key Club members the chance to learn more about Nevada and about Circle K. We inspired potential NewBEEs!
“The College EXPO portion of Key Club DCON was overwhelming to me. I had never been to any Key Club DCONs during my Key Club days, Circle K DCON being my first. Seeing literally thousands of kids and young adults together in one room all reaching for the same goals was kind of amazing. It’s really cheesy, but they are the future, not only of Circle K but where they plan to go afterwards. For some of them, college is a ways away, but watching some of the older kids come to our Nevada booth reminded me of when I was looking at UN Reno. The College Expo made me nostalgic and oddly happy for the Key Clubbers, mostly because they are about to enter a crazy, exciting, roller coaster ride that will create memories they never knew were possible.” - Gaby Murata, Secretary 8
Fellowship Interfamily Karaoke Social Last month, the Broseidon and the Pegasi and the Olympian Gods got together for a night of Karaoke. The strongest singers, and even those a little off-key joined in for a night of singing, laughter, and fun. In the famous song done by Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, “Let it go! Let it go! Can’t hold it back any more!” That is exactly what we did. For the Broseidon and the Pegasi and the Olympian Gods it was a blissful interfamily social. The night was filled with many songs ranging from Smash Mouth to High School Musical. With the mood so uplifting, everyone was joining in at all times. The room was filled with the voices of these two families as they released their inner stars. It was a fantastic night that can only happen with the determination and grace of these two families.

Meeting Bubbles Social 04/ 26/ 14
It was wond-ARF-ul to meet so many Circle K humans at this social. I love when Jared lets me out of the house! Bark. Much petting. Such butt sniffing. So slobber. Many panting. Arf. I was so happy to meet all of you! I had a FURtastic time. I was a little tired (I’m too out of shape for this), but at LEASH you kept me awake. My tail still wags with joy. UnTAIL Next Time. - Ruv, Bubbles

Intramural Futsol Nevada Circle K created a team to participate in Nevada’s Intramural Futsol Games. Our team had many practices where Derek Furukawa led us. Each team member learned some new soccer skills and had a lot of fun. A huge thank you goes to Aldrin Santamaria for leading the team administratively and to Jared Apostol for being the team captain. Thank you to those of you who participated!

The Kiwanis Family Kiwanis Appreciation Dinner On March 28, Alyssa and the Kiwanis Family Committee hosted a Kiwanis Appreciation Dinner which thanked Kiwanians from all over Division 23 for their support throughout the year. The purpose of this dinner was to celebrate the Kiwanians, their accomplishments, and to thank them—especially the Student Leadership Program (SLP) advisors—for their unending support. At this banquet we were also able to present the Distinguished Kiwanis Club award to the Reno Sunrisers Kiwanis Club. Overall, this dinner was a huge success! The event’s theme was “Thanks for being a Hero of Service” with the emphasis on Hercules. Each Kiwanian present received a ribbon lei and a clay pot decorated like Greek pottery as a small token of appreciation. Members of the Kiwanis Family Committee cooked stuffed shells, fettuccini aldfredo, and desserts. This dinner recognized all Kiwanians and by the end of the night, the division was able to grow closer together. Derek Furukawa led a Kiwanis Advisor workshop that educated Kiwanians on what it takes to be a successful Kiwanis Advisor and each member of the committee gave a testimonial to showcase how Kiwanis has impacted our lives. Since this event, many Kiwanians have approached Alyssa and the Kiwanis Family Committee to thank us for a wonderful evening of recognition. This was an excellent event to be a part of and major thanks goes out to all those that were involved in the planning process: Aaron Moss, Aldrin Santamaria, Alyssa Yocom, Boris Zhang, Cody Yamada, Gaby Murata, Jenny Moran, Jordan Clements, Luke Tanaka, and Shayla Starcheski. Hopefully we can encourage year-long recognition of our wonderful Kiwanians and look forward to this event again next year!
What are these...Kiwanians? Kiwanis International is a service organization much like Circle K. In fact, Kiwanians were around before we were. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. In order to fulfill their goals, they created Service Leadership Programs (SLP): Circle K, Key Club, Builder’s Club, K-Kids, and Aktion Club. So in short, Kiwanians support our club by attending our events, serving as role models, helping us financially, and being a wonderful support system. The Reno Sunrisers Kiwanis Club sponsors UN Reno Circle K. Check them out sometime! They meet every Friday at 7am and you have the chance to visit them. Check the Google Doc sign up sheet for more information. 11
Kiwanis Mini Golf Social On April 19th, our club got together with our sponsoring Kiwanis club, the Reno Sunrisers, for a game of mini golf. We were broken up into teams of 4 or 5 and played 18 holes of mini golf. We got the chance to bond with Kiwanians while showing off our skills, or lack thereof, at golfing. It was really fun to casually hang out: after the golfing ended, we celebrated with pizza. Some Kiwanians were surprisingly good at mini golf while I, on the other hand, managed to score a 73 when par was 48. I’d like to say that golf is like bowling: highest score wins. Overall, the event was really fun and the weather was perfect for it! You should definitely check out any future interclub events we have with Kiwanians because how fun the events are might surprise you!
- Alyssa Yocom, Kiwanis Family Relations Chair
Kiwanis Takeover >> Interclub! I remember going to my first Kiwanis Takeover last semester. Unlike the other takeovers, I wasn’t concerned so much with the early time (the takeover starts at 7am!). I was more concerned with being able to communicate with our Kiwanians. I can be shy when first meeting large amounts of people at once, which I know is shocking to many. Building relationships with our Kiwanians throughout the fall and spring semester made it much easier to talk to them at the Takeover event in April. I can honestly say I look forward to upcoming Sunrisers meetings in addition to the next takeover. I hope that more members are able to experience what could be some of us in a few years!
An interclub is an event where members from two different clubs get together. A Kiwanis Takeover is when we send as many Circle K members as possible to take over our sponsoring Kiwanis Club’s meeting. There, we get to know our Kiwanians, and we have a baked good auction to fundraise for our club. If you didn’t have the chance to go, check out the Google Sign Up Sheet
