Message from the Editor Happy September! Welcome to our monthly newsletter for the University of Nevada, Reno Circle K. Our newsletter is titled the “Full Moon” after our wolf mascot and because full moons happen every month just like this newsletter! This newsletter is a great chance to showcase what you have done as a member and I would highly encourage you to submit articles and/or pictures to me. Articles can be as short or as long as you would like and they can be about absolutely anything! This newsletter is designed for you so please offer any help, assistance, guidance, or feedback that you have. I am so excited to welcome all of our new members to the club. That being said, WELCOME TO CIRCLE K! Although I am certainly sad to see summer leave, I am looking forward to all of the great events that this semester will bring. From service to leadership to fellowship, there will be many quality events for everyone to attend. Check out our monthly calendar on page two of the newsletter and frequently check in on the Sign Up Sheet to stay up to date on all of our events. Meetings will consistently be every Wednesday in the Graduate Student Lounge in the Joe at 7:00pm. Take advantage of the fall and be sure to invite all of your friends to the club! I’m excited to meet all of the new members :) Yours in service,

Alyssa Yocom, Newsletter Editor

PLEDGE: “I pledge to uphold the Objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind’s potential.” 2

SERVICE.

Whether it is service to our school, our home, or our community, Circle K members are always rooted in the service of others. As one of our most emphasized tenets, we strongly believe that service gives us the chance to make a lasting impact in this world.

LEADERSHIP.

Did you know that Circle K is an International organization? Within our organization, there are literally thousands of leadership opportunities! We focus on building individual people into strong service leaders and they have the chance for professional development as they explore more leadership opportunities.

FELLOWSHIP.

Circle K members are some of the best people that you will ever meet. Along with that comes the great and abundant opportunities to network and make great friends. We are a network of individuals connected by service and that is an incredibly strong bond. 3

Hot August Nights

With nice, warm weather and HOT vintage cars, it was the perfect time for UNR CKI to volunteer with the Kiwanis Sunrisers for Hot August Nights. A ton of cars came through while Circle K helped out with directing pedestrian traffic. People were paired off and placed at different intersections all the way from 1st street to 6th street up Virginia. People were fenced off and any registered, vintage car rolled down Virginia and up Center St., if they decided to showcase themselves again. Some cars were also decorated so we saw things like an old ModelT in all black called the “Death Cabby”. Other cars weren’t cars at all, as at some point, a 10 foot tall shopping cart (sponsored by Save Mart) with an engine attached to it also rolled along with the cars. There were drunk pedestrians as well as some unusual citizens of Reno roaming around, but overall it was a fun event to participate in.

Opening Day On the lovely Thursday right before school started, all incoming freshmen and international students started moving into their respective halls. CKI helped out with about 75% of the shifts that the housing department needed, resulting in more than 100 service hours total. As the incoming students got off the shuttle at Virginia Street Gym, we welcomed them with signs that either said (Argenta, Nye, and Nevada LLC) or (Manzanita, Juniper, and Sierra). We led them to the front of their respective dorms to get checked in, and that was mostly what we did. Housing was nice enough to provide us shade, water, and meals. We led freshmen around for 4-7 hours until the shuttle closed at 5:30. With so many new students on campus, be sure to take the time to talk to them about Circle K! We would love to grow our Circle K Family.

Club Goal

District Summer Service Social (DSSS)

6,000 hours

Each year, the CNH Circle K District hosts an event called “District Summer Service Social,” or DSSS. This event runs alongside of the CNH Kiwanis District Convention and it is a chance for all Circle K members to come together and partake in all of our three tenets. This year, DSSS was located in beautiful San Diego, CA and we were able to send five of our members to attend: McXine, Casey, Miguel, Matt and Aldrin. During the day, members helped sell items for Kiwanis International, and some members also helped educate our Kiwanians on Circle K and how they can be more involved in our organization. There were also various service projects for all members to participate in. Members got crafty and made sets of alphabet flashcards for local libraries; members made and bagged peanut butter and jam sandwiches for the homeless; and members volunteered at the Twain Fest, a festival that celebrates Mark Twain and 19th century literature and culture. “DSSS was the perfect combination of fellowship and service. I loved getting together with all of the other members from our district. It was so rewarding to be a part of the committee that planned this event.” - Miguel Henares

Leadership Leadership Training Day

On August 9th, Key Clubbers from local high schools joined Nevada Circle K in various leadership activities and ice breakers. We focused on training the young leaders on interpersonal skills and we helped them plan out various projects for them to use during the year. This was a unique event as we were able to teach Key Clubbers all about our tenant of leadership. Overall, the Key Club members enjoyed the day and had a lot of fun throughout the day. Thank you to the Circle K members that took the time out of their day to join us!

Capital August Division Council Meeting (DCM) In August, UN Reno had the pleasure of hosting the Capital August DCM. At the DCM, our Lt. Governor Kyle Prado provided information to the clubs of Capital division. Members from Sac State, UC Davis, UoP, and a few guests were present. Our own treasurer, Cody Yamada, presented a workshop on the District Fundraising Initiatives and how each club can get more involved in fundraising efforts for these great causes. Additional information that was covered includes: club updates, district updates, international updates, and an interactive workshop on how to table for your Circle K club. The DCM is a great chance to learn more about the division and the district. If you have the chance, be sure to check out a DCM in the months to come!

DCMs are hosted by the clubs of Capital division so each month you have the chance to visit other clubs in our division. UN Reno will be hosting a DCM again in November, around our New Member Installation Banquet. DCMs are also great chances to get exposed to all three of our tenets: Service, Leadership, and Fellowship. Check out page 10 of this newsletter to see some of the fellowship components of the August DCM! 6

Fellowship

At the August DCM, we went to Lake Tahoe and cleaned a beach then we all swam and hung out for the morning. In the evening we met at Rancho San Rafael and participated in the Amazing Race: a scavenger hunt and challenge that asked everyone to play silly games in order to win an overall competition. Some of the games included transporting marshmallows using straws, sliding oreos down your face into your mouth, building human pyramids, and skipping rocks. Overall, this weekend was a great weekend of Fellowship as many of our fellow Capital members came to visit us from all over Northern California. We also had District Secretary Johnny and District Treasurer Alan join us for this weekend. In our down time, we were able to play Mao and other card games and just hang out with all of the visitors. As the fall semester is just beginning, it is a great chance to get to know all of our great members! Be sure to check out our sign up sheet for all the social opportunities to come.

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER—Its as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Key Club Buddy System

Kiwanis Family Updates

During the month of August, our Board of officers paired up with the officers of three local Key Clubs to implement a buddy system. Through this system, our officers will be promoting Leadership by guiding Key Club leaders through challenges and serving as a buddy and as a resources during the term. We are buddies with Reed, Galena, and Hug High School Key Clubs.

Division 23 Key Clubs have been busy recruiting new members as their school year has recently started. Additionally, they have focused a lot of their time to fundraising for the Pediatric Trauma Program, or PTP. Division 23 Kiwanis Clubs have been busy preparing for our season of business. During September, all Kiwanis Clubs are involved in community events including: Burning Man, Balloon Races, and the Air Races. The Lemelson STEM Academy K-Kids has officially resumed as our summer has ended. UN Reno Circle K volunteers with K-Kids each week in order to teach them skills about kindness, values of service, and aspects of leadership. Be sure to check the sign up sheet to see when you can help with K-Kids! We visit Lemelson STEM each Friday during the school year.

End of Summer Kiwanis BBQ Thank you to the Reno Sunrisers Kiwanis Club for hosting UN Reno Circle K for an end of summer celebration. We all gathered at the Siminske residence for an evening full of games, fellowship, and delicious food! It is always great to get to know our sponsoring Kiwanis Club a little better. We all enjoyed some home made salad, burgers, sausages, rum cake, cookies, and more! In the next few months, we will have many events with the Reno Sunrisers Kiwanis club and other Kiwanis clubs. I hope that you get to experience one of these events. Some Kiwanis events we have to look forward to in the month of September: 

Better World Books:

Better World Books is an online reseller of used books. Every time you purchase a book from BetterWorldBooks.com, a book is donated to someone in need. Operating as a social enterprise, Better World Books rewards nonprofit partners for books collected through books drives. How can our club work with Better World Books? Organize the drive: Get volunteers and set goals for your drive. Promote the drive: Get the word out via Facebook, posters, text messaging, smoke signals—whatever will work on your campus! Sort the books: Empty your bins when they’re full and sort the books. Box and ship: Schedule your free shipment of books through RUFIS. Working with BetterWorldBooks is recommended by Circle K International and as a campus we can get more involved with this organization! If you are interested in partaking in this project please contact any club officer and we will help get you started.

International Updates: Recently, the International Board met for their weekend of training and a board meeting. Ask Charlie Horse:

Our “Ask Charlie Horse” column is here for you to ask all of your questions! You can ask about Circle K, life, or anything else! Charlie is here to help you with all the wonders and pains that life may bring your way. Submit your questions via the Google Form posted on the Sign Up Sheet.

Dear Charlie Horse, If a #2 pencil is the most used pencil, why is it #2?

Dear Charlie Horse, What happens if you get scared half to death twice?

-Point L. Ess

- Scare D. Cat

Dear Pont L. Ess, Very good question, as I’m assuming you also hail from the country where eagles fly free and frying oil burns with freedom. According to the good people at Pencils.com, a number two pencil does not necessarily equate to how often it is put through a pencil sharpener. The #2 you see on a pencil actually refers to the HB (Hardness/Blackness) scale. There are more than just #2 pencils all over the world ranging from 1-9! The number refers to how hard the graphite core is inside the pencil. The higher the number, the harder the core and the lighter the mark that the tip will leave on paper. There is no exact scale, as each company has their own graphite core criteria. #themoreyouknow

Dear White Girl Can’t Even, T he ans we r is q u ite elementary my Dear Watson. I believe the answer for which you wish to obtain is quite gormless, as you wish to say that any ol’ chap will be quite six feet under if they were scared twice half to death. Yet, when you actually think about it, a person who is scared half to death from their current time of being scared is only a quarter dead. After the first time the person is scared, they only have half their life left. When they are thus, scared again half to death, they will have half of the half which all in all equates to a quarter. In conclusion, if you get scared half to death twice, you will have a quarter of your life left.

Meet Your Board: Aldrin Santamaria, President My name is Aldrin Santamaria and I serve as your President for the 20142015 term. I’m currently a 3rd year Biology and Molecular Microbiology & Immunology major and outside of Circle K I am also an undergraduate lab researcher in a lab studying butterflies, a Peer Advisor in the Advising Center, an active brother of Alpha Kappa Psi, and one of the few hundred Honors students on campus. I joined Circle K my freshman year of college, after having already enjoyed four years in the Kiwanis Family as a Key Club member in Las Vegas, NV. Whenever I have free time (and money), I like to play video games, travel to new places, and eat new food! I enjoy listening to all kinds of music but have sadly not attended my first concert yet, which I hope to rectify by seeing Yellowcard perform this semester. This is just a short blurb about me that hopefully gives all of you a bit more insight about myself; however, for the full story, come up and talk to me throughout the year! I’m looking forward to knowing all of our members in the months to come! 13
