The Full Moon Newsletter Issue I Volume III May 1, 2015 1
A Message from the Editor: Welcome to the first issue of “The Full Moon” for the 2015-2016 year; I am extremely excited and grateful that I will be able to serve as your Public Relations Chair. Some of you may be wondering why the May newsletter is horror themed. With summer right around the corner, what is there to be scared of? Well, standing in front of that corner is every protagonist procrastinator’s worst nightmare: finals. Even with the daunting threat of finals looming on the horizon, I hope you can find some joy not only in taking a break to read this newsletter, but also through your continued participation with Nevada Circle K. As many of you already know, Circle K is a year round organization and there are many events during the summer just as there are during the academic year. While everyone should make sure they get their fair share of summer relaxation and adventure in, I challenge you all to maintain your involvement within the club this summer and continue to give your valuable time to those who need it most. Even though school may take a break, service never stops! Proceed through this newsletter if you dare and I hope you enjoy this first issue.

Service:
Spring Forward For Autism
This event was hosted by the Justin Hope Foundation and it was held in MacKay Stadium. The Justin Hope Foundation is a local (Northern Nevada) organization dedicated to give hope, support, and opportunities to individuals and families who are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Local fire fighters, policemen, and even Governor Sandoval participated in the 5K walk/run. At the event, volunteers were assigned different stations; some were on the race track encouraging runners; some were responsible for registering runners, and others were stationed at different activities/food/water stations. I was lucky enough to be a part of handing and distributing the food to runners. I say lucky because I had many opportunities to interact with individuals with Autism. Usually accompanied by family members, some individuals with Autism were anti-social and did not talk to me. Others, on the other hand, could not stop talking. Some were high-functioning and are contributing members to society, while some others had difficulty walking, talking, and breathing. The range was eye-opening. Many had muscular atrophy, so they walked with a limp and many others had difficulty keeping eye-contact with me. Throughout the event, I thought, “it must be extremely difficult living with a person with Autism.” I only interacted with these individuals for a few hours; I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to take care of individuals with Autism for a lifetime. I have newfound respect for both family members and individuals with Autism. The most eye-opening part of the event for me was an older individual with Autism (around 60 years old) and his daughter (around mid-20s). It reminded me that Autism is real and people do not grow out of Autism. I did not even know the older gentlemen had Autism when I was serving him food. He was extremely high-functioning and had good social skills. This event was awe-inspiring and endearing. No one was discriminated and everyone had their arms wide-open, figuratively and literally. I also saw a lot of people that I know. I saw my old high school Chemistry teacher, my high school’s track coach and his son with Autism, and my friend’s aunt and her relative with a neurodevelopmental disorder. I did not even know that these people had family members with Autism. But seeing these people was a reality check. Autism is real and it affects everyone around us. I loved seeing the individuals with Autism being recognized for their accomplishments and being included in community events such as this. Their eyes were filled with joy; they were real and sincere. They ran up to the podium and screamed with excitement when their names were called. Everyone should know that these individuals are people too. Their disorder does not make them who they are. This event was one of my favorite events I’ve volunteered for.

P.S. I loved this event even more because I got over 90 free bananas, free port of sub sandwiches, free muffins, and free croissants!

Club Service Goal: 8,000 hours “Lights, Camera, Service”
May Service Update: March and April Hours: 355
Percent of Hours Complete: 4.4% Monthly Target: 667 Hours C³ Event Recap C³ was definitely a really great event. Being able to be a team captain was also really rewarding because I got to lead a group of members alongside my partner, Tommy Dang! We first started off with a service event where we had to clean a park. Afterwards we had the April DCM where we got to hear updates about not only Capital division, but also Central Coast division. It was fun seeing so many people get pied and how much people auctioned to pie them. At the end we had a scavenger hunt and it was literally super crazy and competitive! I had so much fun just getting to bond with the people in my group and listening to all their different likes and dislikes. I would say that if you even have the chance to go to C³ you should definitely try to go because you get to bond with people

not only in our division but in Central Coast as well and you just overall get to experience an event with
service and social aspects! 7
Leadership Aldrin:
The “Well, maybe it's the common curse/Maybe things get bad before they get worse/I Retired don't wanna become someone/Who can't live up to what already done…” Advice If you’re reading this newsletter (and thank you for being one of the few that do) then you’re probably feeling just a tad stressed and pressured right now. It’s the week before finals which Guru means thesis defenses, term papers, and review sessions need to be done ASAP; in the world of Circle K, you might also be feeling bogged down with intramural sports on weekday nights, banquets or service taking up your weekends period, and of course meetings. Of course, this is supplementary to any other outside organizations or obligations such as work, internships, lab work, or other stressors that are occurring in your lives right now, such as the struggles to pay on time for an upcoming studies abroad trip, the sudden illness of a close loved one, or increasingly mounting financial struggles. The next two weeks until the end of the semester probably feel unbearably long and panic inducing. Push through. You may be feeling pretty down right now – perhaps even disappointed in yourself if you aren’t currently meeting your expectations. You may feel like calling it quits and giving up. Again, push through. Everything that you are going through are struggles and tribulations that numerous others before you have overcome and triumphed over. Seek their assistance and guidance if need be and understand that you are not alone: we all have our own obstacles to overcome and while they may seem insurmountable in the present moment, through tenacity and diligence, we’ll be able to move forward – one step at a time. Summer’s almost here everyone – just two more weeks. Finish this semester as strong as you can and then reap the fruits of your labor. You all deserve it.

Want to chair an event? There’s room at the table for you!
Contact Vice President of Service Dayna Tanaka for VPService@nevadacki.com more info! With our clubs increasing participation, more event chairs are needed to attend and cerf events. Doing cerfs is an easy and fun (if you’re into that kind of thing) way to show your support for the club. Also, you know what they say, event chairs are basically movie stars, minus the money, fame, and top Hollywood acting roles.

Coach Bubbles and Jared break down the WBA (Wiffle Ball Association) Playoffs!
Wiffle Ballin’ Wiffle- WHAT?!? WIFFLE BALL!!! From April 28th to April 30th, Nevada Circle K participated in the University’s Intramural Wiffle ball tournament. This was the most fun I have seen from any Intramural team I have been a part of. Everyone was smiling and cheering each other on – even the other team. We made mistakes here and there, and our batters struck out here and there, but it didn’t matter. We were all having fun and enjoying each other’s company. It was great! What made it better was that we made it to the PLAYOFFS! Playoffs were a lot of fun! Everyone was hitting and fielding all the balls. Hiya caught an amazing pop fly, and Jaylen and Jeremy made an awesome double play to end an inning! Johnathan, Christian, and Tyler also had their shining moments as pitchers. They would strike out ONE, or TWO, or THREE batters in a row. On top of that, it was nice to see everyone come out and support the games! Thank you for all of the support! And thanks to all of the players that participated in Wiffle ball this semester! WAY TO GO GUYS!

Safe Kids Day Get Summer started off right by coming out to Safe Kids Day on May 16th! Safe Kids Day is an event organized by Safe Kids Washoe County that aims to increase the awareness of the amount of young children harmed and killed by unintentional accidents each year. While many preventive measures such as better healthcare, immunizations, and nutritious meals are coming to the forefront of parenting, accidental deaths are responsible for more disabilities and deaths than all childhood diseases combined. The event will run from 9:30am to 2:30pm and focus on making parents more aware of risks in their home and giving children the valuable lessons they need to avoid those risks. Come out and support K-Fam at this event!
