Dear Audience, we know that we are currently facing some turbulent times with the whole Coronavirus ordeal; the stock market is weakening, oil sits at its worst value in history, entire cities closed, unemployment at an unimaginable rate, and all of us worried sick for our lives, our businesses, our economy, our jobs, and how we will all survive, could this be the end of the world?

I’ve always believed that the world ends for anyone who leaves this earth. I firmly believe that this is all a test, a test given by our Lord, God, so that humanity can change, reinvent itself and innovate, to be with family, and learn the true meaning of being together, to get out of our comfort zone, and frankly I could go on and on, but it would never end.

The reality is that, we have been under quarantine over 40 days now, many of us working from home, others working at essential businesses, like hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets, gas stations, and other business that sells and provides essential services and products.

The toughest of all, would be the people working at clinics and hospitals, putting themselves on the front line every day, dealing with patients every day, and seeing how some recover, and some, unfortunately, loose the fight. These are our real heroes, those who tend to the ones that needed, completely selflessly, risking their lives to save others. Thank you, and may God bless you.

Now, a few days from reopening our economy in most states, Arizona will not be the exception. Governor Ducey, Mayor Romero, State and community leaders, as well as our community, are all saying present to figuring out the best way to restart our economy. I encourage all of you to start being proactive, creative, and to reopen your business with the outmost positive attitude, and to continue to have faith, and believe everything will be ok, so we can provide our best of service, and support one another. During these times, we must let go of rivalries, of jealousy, selfishness, and false sense of superiority; we are all enduring the same struggle, and there is no going back, just forward, and our families, our businesses, our employees, and our community awaits.

So, let’s give it our all, with respect, wisdom, and most of all, we do it together, united for the same goal.

I want to end by extending my humble respect and congratulations to all Mothers on their special day. All of you deserve to be celebrated every day of the year, not just for one day, as you are the pillar of your families. A family’s unity depends on you, our dear mothers. So please, love your mothers, spoil them, and make them feel as special as they are. Happy Mother’s Day on behalf of our entire AZB team, and myself. (This May 10th, send them a flower, a gift, or even just a call, and remember, protect your mothers!)

REMEMBER: Social Distancing means at least 6 feet, wash your hands every 20 seconds, disinfect all surfaces constantly, no gathering of 10+ people, and if you feel sick, stay home.

This isn’t the end of the world, it’s only the beginning!

Estimados amigos, sabemos que todos en el mundo estamos en una situación muy difícil en estos meses con el Corona Virus; las casas de bolsa bajando, el petróleo en el peor valor en la historia, las ciudades cerradas, el desempleo en el punto más crítico que pudiéramos imaginar en esta vida, y todos preocupados a mas no poder por nuestras vidas, nuestros negocios, la economía, los empleos, y como es que vamos a sobrevivir, ¿será este el fin el mundo?

Yo pienso que el mundo se le termina, a cada quien, el día en que se va de este mundo. Creo firmemente que esta es una prueba, que Dios Nuestro Señor, nos esta poniendo a la humanidad para que nos reinventemos, para hacer las cosas diferentes, para innovar, para estar en familia, y ver el significado real de estar reunidos todos juntos, para no estar en nuestra zona de confort; podría seguir enumerando muchos calificativos más y no terminaría.

La realidad es, que hemos estado más de 40 días en cuarentena, muchos de nosotros trabajando desde casa afortunadamente, otros trabajando en los negocios esenciales, como en las áreas de hoteles, restaurantes, farmacias, supermercados, gasolineras, tiendas esenciales con todo tipo de productos. Los más difíciles y preocupantes, los que trabajan en clínicas, hospitales y en la línea, recibiendo a los enfermos y viendo como muchos de ellos salen a recuperarse, muchos otros más, desgraciadamente no corren con esa misma suerte. Ellos son nuestros verdaderos héroes, los que atienden sin mirar a quien, arriesgando su salud y su vida. ¡Gracias, infinitas a todos ellos y que dios les bendiga!

Ahora, que estamos a unos días de reabrir la economía en muchos estados, Arizona no es la excepción. El Gobernador Ducey, la alcaldesa Romero, líderes del estado y la comunidad, se alistan para ver de que manera se va a reactivar la economía de las ciudades. Les invito a todos ustedes a que seamos proactivos, creativos, y reabramos nuestros negocios con una actitud positiva, firme, con ánimo, y mucha fe, fe en que todo nos irá excelente y brindar nuestro mejor servicio, así como brindar apoyo unos a los otros. Hay que olvidarnos de rivalidades, de egoísmos, de que yo soy mejor que el otro, aquí todos estamos sufriendo del mismo mal, no hay marcha atrás, nuestros negocios, nuestros empleados y comunidad nos esperan. ¡Vamos a darle duro con mucho respeto, sabiduría y unidos en un mismo fin!

Quiero terminar con un gran saludo, respeto y humildad a todas las madres en este su día, tanto a las madres mexicanas como americanas.

Todas ustedes merecen ser celebradas cada día el año, no únicamente un solo día, Ustedes son el pilar de la familia, la unión familiar depende de ustedes, madres queridas. Quiéranlas, consiéntalas, háganlas sentir especiales. Feliz y bendecido día de madres de parte de una servidora y de nuestro equipo de trabajo. Flores Concepts y ‘Si Charro’ recaudan fondos para hospitales

R

ay y Carlotta Flores de Flores Concepts y ‘Si Charro’, el grupo de restaurantes locales, crean una nueva pagina web para recaudar fondos llamada www.tamaleforheroes.com con $10,000 prometidos para hospitales locales.

La página web será un portal para aquellos interesados en comprar tamales para ser donados a nuestros hospitales del área. Conforme se realicen las compras de tamales, esos serán colectados y elaborados en Carlotta’s Kitchen, la cocina certificada por el departamento de agricultura de los Estados Unidos, o USDA por sus siglas en inglés, cerca de Downtown. La Cocina de Carlotta es una de las pocas cocinas certificadas por el USDA, y funciona como un centro para muchas de las operaciones en Tucson y sus alrededores.

“Se nos ocurrió la idea de lanzar un sitio de apoyo de comida, en conjunto con la elaboración de los toques finales de nuestro siguiente negocio, www.tamaleofthemonth.com . Este proyecto se ha estado trabajando desde hace ya un tiempo, y con todos nuestros restaurantes en modo ‘para llevar’, hemos tenido un poco mas de tiempo para trabajar en el” dijo Ray FLores. La página web se lanzará el 1ro de mayo, justo a tiempo para las ordenes del cinco de mayo, y también estará disponible en todas las partes del país. Las personas podrán suscribirse mensualmente, semanalmente, o realizar compras de una sola vez de nuestra deliciosa selección de Tamales de ‘Si Charro’.

Si bien han sido sumamente impactados por los retos que trae la pandemia del COVID-19, Flores y su familia se mantienen firmes en sus principios basado en la idea que “ayudar a otros, nos recompensa de una forma que una

cuenta bancaria jamás podría”. Flores ya ha recaudado $10,000 para ayudar a los hospitales locales.

Poco después de lanzar, por correo electrónico, una prevista a la página web, Flores recibió una gran respuesta, con una promesa de $10,000 de parte de la fundación DMB. Esto ayudará a comprar mas de 4,000 tamales o 160 canastas de 25 cada una, para comenzar a distribuir inmediatamente.

Todo esto puede parecer mas de lo que puedan hacer la Familia Flores, pero es sin duda, uno de los grupos mas capacitados para realizar este tipo de operaciones. abemos que el miedo es una de las emociones que se disparan muy fácilmente ante diversas circunstancias, desde las más pequeñas e inofensivas, hasta situaciones de pánico que inmoviliza a las personas. El miedo tiene una función de protección, por ejemplo, si veo un animal salvaje cerca de mí, regularmente la gente se aleja y se esconde, esta es la protección de la que hablo.

Sin embargo, el miedo que mucha gente está experimentando en esta contingencia de salud que nos llegó por sorpresa, ha llegado a niveles de pánico, lo cual no es muy saludable, porque en muchos casos la mala información y la mala interpretación de los hechos hace que nuestras emociones se intensifiquen.

También encontramos una serie de emociones que se llegan a manifestar ante este tipo de contingencia, como la ira, lo podemos ver en los políticos, en la misma comunidad quienes atacan de manera irracional a médicos y enfermeras. Sin embargo, también hemos visto reacciones de solidaridad, personas que comparten comida a los más necesitados.

Otro sentimiento complejo es la tristeza, ya que experimentamos un fuerte sentimiento de vulnerabilidad. También empezamos a interesarnos más en aspectos políticos o la misma curiosidad científica, ya que es interesante saber cómo un organismo microscópico puede hacer tanto daño a la humanidad.

Curiosamente otro sentimiento que se da mucho es la alegría y el humor, ya que a través de los memes nos podemos burlar de lo que está ocurriendo o bien los comediantes llenan las redes sociales con mucho humor que nos permite escapar por lo menos un poco de lo que estamos viviendo.

Por eso debemos buscar información confiable, aunque estemos aislados de la familia debemos seguir en continuo contacto, cuida tu salud, usa técnicas para manejar el estrés, juega con tu familia, etc. todo esto con el fin de ocupar tu tiempo en algo más productivo.

How to know if your census taker is the real deal

veryone is encouraged to fill out the census form for your household as soon as you can. When you do not respond to the 2020 census, the U.S. Census Bureau must send census takers to follow up with a knock on your door to ensure an accurate count of everyone who lives in the United States. Taking five to 10 minutes to respond online, by phone or by mail will save a census taker a trip to your house.

If a census taker comes to your door, however, you should make sure you see a valid 2020 Census badge with a photograph. The badge should include a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark and an expiration date. The census taker’s responsibility is to go through each question with you and complete the form with your answers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, follow up will be in conjunction with guidance from federal, state and local health authorities.

According to the Census Bureau, census takers will never ask for the following: • Your Social Security number • Money or donations • Anything on behalf of a political party • Your bank or credit card account numbers Everyone living in the United States, from babies to seniors, is required to participate in the U.S. census. On the other hand, the Census Bureau is required to protect your answers. Your responses are used to produce statistics that help determine the distribution of billions of public dollars to states and important community programs and services, including funding for school lunches, health care, public safety and transportation. The data also help determine fair government representation. Public and private sector entities count on these updated statistics every 10 years to make important decisions that lead to new businesses, jobs or placement of housing, schools or roads.

Casino del Sol culinary team prepares and delivers lunch to over 3,000 healthcare workers at tucson hospitals

W

hile the temporary closure remains in effect, Casino Del Sol is doing everything they can to help the local community. Starting this past Monday, the culinary staff prepared and delivered lunches to local Tucson hospitals. Over six days they will be serving more than 3,000 healthcare workers at five hospitals as well as multiple Pascua Yaqui Tribe public service departments.

“Supporting our local community, especially those on the front lines, during this uncertain and difficult time is of the utmost importance to us at Casino Del Sol,” said CEO of Casino Del Sol, Kimberly Van Amburg.

“We must all come together and do everything we can to help those who are making sacrifices for us. They are so busy caring for others, they don’t even have time to stop and grab lunch, so we brought lunch to them.”

Freshly prepared lunches are being delivered to St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Tucson Medical Center, Banner - University Medical Center Tucson, Banner - University Medical Center South, El Rio Community Health Center and Pascua Yaqui Tribe Facilities Management Department and Police and Fire Departments.

Memorial Day, A History of Remembrance

T

he United States celebrates Memorial Day annually on the last Monday of May. Also known as Decoration Day, this holiday honors those who have died during military service for the United States.

It is casually considered the start of summer.

Most celebrations take place at cemeteries, especially United States National cemeteries, which usually contain military personnel graves and sometimes their spouses.

Well known National Cemeteries include the Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington D.C., the Golden Gate National Cemetery in California and the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota.

There are many traditions that Americans honor in commemoration of Memorial Day. They may fly the American flag, visit memorial cemeteries, and place flags in the graves of fallen soldiers. Also, many observers decorate the military graves to honor them. Despite this theme, many celebrations are joyous in nature, such as picnics, fireworks, concerts, gatherings and parties, memorials, and attendance of professional sport games. Many citizens retreat to vacation spots for the weekend or hold barbeques.

Most schools and offices will shut down in commemoration.

A famous Memorial Day ceremony takes place at Gettysburg National Park every year since 1868, featuring a Memorial Day address. At the park in 1913, both Union and Confederate veterans gathered for the 50year anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Other traditions include raising the flag to full staff and then lowering to half-staff, then raising it again at noon. This is symbolic of raising the soldiers’ memory. In Washington D.C. on the capitol’s west lawn, the Nation-

al Memorial Day Concert is held, which is broadcast on PBS and NPR. Parades are held in small and large cities alike, which feature marching bands and a procession of servicemen and veterans. The Indianapolis 500 is held in honor of Memorial Day along with the Coca-Cola 600. Another popular event is the Memorial Tournament, a golf tournament held in Ohio.

Memorial Day – Holiday History

Inspired by the Southern practice of honoring dead soldiers, Memorial Day began as an effort to give Union soldiers the same commemoration. Many memorial commemorations were held at the local level. Another earlier celebration was a May Day ceremony held in 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina, where many Union prisoners of war were buried in unmarked graves. A group of freedmen, including schoolchildren, cleaned and decorated the burial ground and then held a memorial ceremony. In 1866, a committee in Waterloo, New York organized a decoration of Union veteran graves, which took place on May 5. In 1868, General John A. Logan proclaimed a national and annual observation of “Decoration Day” on May 30. That first celebration featured events in 183 cemeteries throughout 27 states the holiday was changed to include all service men and women after World War I. It became known as Memorial Day over Decoration Day after World War II. The date changed from May 30 to the last Monday in May in 1971 in order to have three-day weekends.

The difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day is that Memorial Day honors those who had died while Veterans Day is a celebration of all Veterans.

She is also Chief of StaffElect at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital.

Prior to her work at Carondelet, Dr. Herbert completed her undergrad at Florida State University in 1989, attended medical school at University of Florida from 1989 to 1993, and graduated from the University of Arizona emergency medicine residency program in 2001.

Dr. Herbert is a mother to two sets of twin boys, 8 and 11 years old.

As a little girl in Nogales, Mexico, I never dreamed of being a doctor. I was not very ambitious since I was a child of a single parent mom living on the south side of Tucson in poverty. As I graduated from Sunnyside high school, my thoughts were only to be a mom. But my mother kept encouraging me to enroll in college and dream of a better life than she had for herself. She repeatedly stressed to focus on getting on education and work hard to become a professional. I initially considered being a teacher or a therapist but science and a love of helping children pulled me towards doing medicine.

As a mother, I had a desire to be help my children learn so I began my own preschool –home school and started back to college to be a teacher. I had my own pre-school for 5 years with an average of 10 children including my own. I studied early childhood development at Pima Community College with my original intention to be a teacher. But, college reawakened my love for science and health so I became a certified Personal Trainer and tutor in physiology. While at the PCC, I began to be drawn me into a career in the healthcare field since it combined my love of science and helping people.

I was very blessed to be offered a full scholarship which covered not only all my tuition plus my living expenses to attend Northern Arizona University. I studied Human Physiology and Chemistry with the intent to go into a health career. I prepared to take the Medical School entrance exam (MCAT) and to my amazement passed on the first try plus I was accepted to the University of Arizona medical school on my first try. Por Dios, I received a full scholarship to medical school. My mother’s words that, “anything was possible in America” were coming true! I found my dream of combining my love for science and helping children coming true as I began to study of pediatrics (medicine specializing in children’s issues).

As a pediatrician, I have enjoyed helping parents and their children become healthier and thrive developmentally. My passion is to teach children and their families learn how to live healthier thru healthy eating, exercise and optimize their development. I love working with all ages from babies to college age and their families. My goal is to teach and inspire people to successful not only in health but in life.

It is my privilege to serve, mentor and be a role model for our south side kids, teens and families for over 13 years. My mom was poor Mexican immigrant with a dream to provide a better life for her children. As a mother and grandmother , my hope is to inspire the next generation to dream big and achieve their goals beyond their dreams. My own background of growing up on Tucson’s south side and attending Sunnyside is proof than anyone who believes can achieve. My personal motto is love people and work hard to make a difference in the world. I hope all those who come in contact with me learn they can do the same and make the world a better place one person at time.

MSN, BSN, RN The world is in the middle of a pandemic as is it is also celebrating the Year of The Nurse. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared this honor for 2020 to mark Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday. Reflecting on my 18 years of experience in nursing has given me a better perspective to move through this period that feels so uncertain and unknown.

I was at bedside during the scare of H1N1 and the threat of the Ebola crisis, preparing and collaborating with my colleagues for how to handle both if they became a crisis in our community. I was the front line then, learning how to gear up with PPE to protect ourselves and our patients. I remember the focus it took to ensure we had plans for testing, isolating and treating our patients. The value of that time has given me great appreciation for what it takes to be on the frontline delivering hands on patient care. That experience is the value I bring to the work now being, supporting and caring for the staff that is screening and caring for patients with COVID-19. This particular virus is very complex due to its variety and severity of symptoms.

My role now is to empower my team to dig deeper, ask questions, and utilize their critical thinking and clinical skills to serve better.

Our patients at El Rio Health trust us to provide reliable information so they can have confidence in our guidance, knowing that we are here with them, to listen and to lead, because this will pass and we will get through it together.

One of the scariest times for our patients is when they are notified about their test results for COVID-19. We share results with compassion and confidence that our Medical Team at El Rio Health will care for them with the most updated and evidence-based medicine. Our Care Coordination Team, that includes Medical Assistants, Registered Nurses and many other resources, guides their monitoring, supportive treatment, and follow-up care. We ease their anxiety with access to Tele-Health Visits and we continue to contact them in the days after to see how they are feeling and if they need to be seen again.

My experience with those follow-up calls has been humbling.

When I hear moms and dads concerned more about the needs of their family, I feel their stress. As a daughter, sister, aunt, mother and a grandmother of one, but soon to be three beautiful grandchildren, my heart knows their angst. This is why my team and I bring compassion to each conversation, because we recognize how families are dealing with this pandemic, and it is vital to acknowledge that the challenges are real. We talk them through how to isolate themselves at home, knowing that their family includes multiple generations under the same roof. We hear the anxiety when the patient is also the bread winner of the family and now is unable to work. Listening with empathy is one of the greatest skills that nursing has taught me, and during this time it is the foundation of how my team and I partner with families to make a plan that will support them through this crisis.

I am proud to be a nurse leader supporting our community through El Rio Health and I am honored to directly support our heroes on the front line during this pandemic. Whether it be our nurses answering the 24/7 Triage phone line offering guidance and scheduling appointments, or the staff at our clinics screening and providing treatment, or our Nurse Care Coordinators following up with patients and connecting them to resources as they heal and recover, we are here for our community. Yes, 2020 is the year of the Nurse, and as a nurse, I am hoping it will also be the year where we see how strong we are when we heal together.

UArizona plans to reopen in the Fall La Universidad de Arizona planea reabrir en el otoño

he University of Arizona plans to resume in-person classes in the fall semester, which begins on Aug. 24, President Robert C. Robbins announced Thursday. Robbins made the announcement after having his blood drawn for antibody testing on the first day of a statewide antibody testing effort being led by the university in partnership with the state of Arizona.

The first phase of antibody testing will include 3,000 health care workers and first responders in Pima County, as well as approximately 1,500 members of the general public. The antibody test, developed by UArizona Health Sciences researchers, is one component of Robbins’ three-part Test, Trace and Treat strategy for bringing students and employees back to campus.

The president issued the following statement: “I am pleased to publicly announce today our intention to return to in-person classes at the University of Arizona for the fall semester. We will honor all local, state and federal protective measures that apply, and, of course, there are many factors that remain beyond our control. However, we are tackling what is within our control to ensure our students have the opportunity for a full on-campus experience.

Los funcionarios de salud pública nos están pidiendo que practiquemos el “distanciamiento social”. Si tu primer pensamiento es: “¿qué significa el distanciamiento social?” – tenemos aquí la respuesta.

¿Qué es el distanciamiento social?

El distanciamiento social tiene como objetivo mantener a las personas sanas lejos de las personas enfermas, en un esfuerzo para reducir la velocidad y prevenir la propagación de una enfermedad contagiosa, como el COVID-19. Significa limitar el contacto cercano con las personas y evitar estar entre grandes multitudes y grupos (evitar aglomeraciones de más de 10 personas y mantener 2 metros de distancia entre las personas). Puede parecer inconveniente, pero es una responsabilidad social que todos debemos tomar en serio. (Y también asegurarte de que estás practicando una higiene de manos adecuada).

Aunque algunas personas experimentan solo una enfermedad leve cuando se infectan con el nuevo coronavirus, otras no.

Las medidas preventivas, como el distanciamiento social, ayudan a proteger a las personas vulnerables a que no desarrollen enfermedades más graves.

No saludar a las personas con un apretón de manos o un abrazo. De hecho, mantente a 2 metros de distancia de las demás personas, siempre que sea posible.

Evita grandes multitudes. Mantente alejado de las multitudes de más de 10 personas, especialmente si el espacio tiene circulación limitada de aire.

No lo descartes, aunque te suene exagerado. El distanciamiento social no es lo mismo que estar aislado o en cuarentena en tu hogar 24/7. Simplemente significa hacer un esfuerzo consciente para modificar tus comportamientos sociales, para reducir tu contacto con otras personas, tanto como sea posible.

Los estudiantes en su último año de preparatoria en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Sunnyside, y en todo el país, están pasando sus últimos meses de preparatoria en cuarentena. Lamentablemente, no podrán participar en los muchos eventos que tradicionalmente culminan la experiencia de la escuela preparatoria. Le deseamos a la Clase de 2020 mucha salud, éxito y felicidad, y recuerden: esto también pasará. Para la edición de este mes, hemos invitado a dos de nuestros estudiantes “Seniors” a compartir su perspectiva: Coautores: Clarissa Frisby, Desert View High School Michael Villasana, Sunnyside High School Durante 16 años de nuestras vidas, escuchábamos constantemente los comentarios de estudiantes mayores de cómo ellos eran los mejores simplemente porque eran personas mayores. Escuchábamos sus historias. Fingíamos que no nos importaba y que estaban exagerando. En el fondo, realmente todos nosotros estábamos emocionados--cada uno por una razón diferente, pero no obstante emocionados.

Estábamos emocionados por tener más libertad y por la oportunidad de pasar un año lleno de diversión y creando recuerdos que durarían toda la vida. Las fiestas de graduación, el baile de graduación y la ceremonia de graduación fueron las principales ventajas en nuestro año especial.

Observamos y esperamos pacientemente, porque pronto llegaría nuestro momento para brillar. La clase de 2020. No funcionó de la manera que nosotros queríamos o esperábamos.

Afortunadamente, nuestro Distrito constantemente quiere ayudar y apoyar a los estudiantes, no sólo durante una pandemia, sino desde antes. Ahora tenemos la oportunidad de ser independientes y no estamos completamente solos. Nuestros maestros todavía están dispuestos a enseñarnos y nos han estado proporcionando el trabajo escolar que necesitamos terminar para graduarnos. Mientras estábamos físicamente en la escuela, tuvimos la suerte de tener a nuestros maestros tan cerca para pedirles ayuda. Aunque todavía tenemos su ayuda, ahora nuestros maestros están físicamente a mayor distancia. Esto sirve como una manera de prepararnos para la universidad al permitirnos experimentar más responsabilidad.

Durante este tiempo y esta situación, nuestros directores no han dejado de luchar para que podamos tener una ceremonia de graduación, en la cual podamos recibir el reconocimiento que nos merecemos.

Igualmente, nuestro Superintendente y su equipo nos han estado mandando información actualizada. El Distrito les ha ayudado a los estudiantes a obtener comida y acceso al internet, ya que el cierre de escuelas les ha causado inconvenientes personales a las familias.

Aunque estamos en una temporada difícil, me agrada saber que el Distrito Sunnyside tiene esperanza de que la ceremonia de graduación se lleve a cabo. Nos da consuelo saber que aunque la ceremonia pueda ocurrir después de la fecha originalmente programada, la administración, el Distrito, nuestros maestros y los estudiantes siguen tratando para que se realice. Han hecho un trabajo increíble para apoyarnos continuamente—a nosotros y a nuestra comunidad.

Seniors in the Sunnyside Unified School District and across the country are spending their last months of high school in quarantine and regrettably, they will not get to participate in the many events that traditionally culminate the high school experience.

We wish the Class of 2020 much health, success and happiness, and remember: this too shall pass.

For this month’s edition, we have invited two of our Seniors to share their perspective: Co-authored by: Clarissa Frisby, Desert View High School Michael Villasana, Sunnyside High School For 16 years of our lives, we heard nonstop from older kids how they were the best simply because they were seniors.

We heard the stories. We pretended like we didn’t care and they were overreacting.

Deep down, we were all excited. Each for a different reason, but excited nonetheless.

We were excited for more freedom and for the chance to spend a fun-filled year making memories that would last a lifetime. Senior parties, prom and graduation were the main perks that made it special.

We patiently watched and waited, for soon it would be our time to shine. The Class of 2020. It didn’t work out in the way any of us wanted or expected.

When we started our senior year, the last thing we expected was to enter a worldwide pandemic. Then COVID-19 struck.

All of us were suddenly forced to switch to online school.

Being a senior during this time has been full of disappointment, outrage and sadness. Many were looking forward to going to senior prom as well as being able to walk at graduation. All our years of finding motivation, being responsible and doing hard work feel as if they don’t matter as much now. It has been tough trying to wrap our heads around all the opportunities we are losing.

Thankfully, our district constantly wants to help others and support students, not only during a pandemic, but before that.

We are getting the opportunity to be independent and we are not completely alone.

Our teachers are still willing to teach us and have been giving us the school work we need to finish in order to graduate.

While we were physically in school, we were lucky enough to have our teachers so close for help. Although we still have their help, now they are at more of a distance. This serves as a way to prepare us for college by letting us experience more responsibility.

Time and situation have not stopped our principals from pushing to get us a graduation ceremony where we get the recognition we deserve. Likewise, our superintendent and his team have been trying to give us updates. The district has been helping with students to obtain the food and internet access they need, as this closure is causing personal drawbacks within families.

Although we are in a difficult time, it’s nice to know that Sunnyside hopes a ceremony happens. It brings us comfort that, even if it’s delayed, the administration, the district, our teachers and the students are willing to try. They have done an amazing job to continually support us and our community.

¿Como estamos viviendo nuestra vida?

E

n su deslumbrante poema “El día de verano”, Mary Oliver hace una pregunta conmovedora: “Dime, ¿qué es lo que planeas hacer con tu única vida salvaje y preciosa?”

Todos sabemos que la vida es preciosa, sí, y que hay momentos de gran serenidad y gentil alegría. Conocemos el tacto suave de la delicada mano de una abuela envejecida, y conocemos la tranquila gloria de un recién nacido dormido.

Pero a pesar de su preciosidad, la vida también es, a veces, incontrolablemente salvaje. La vida corre a lo largo de la ruta de la montaña rusa más salvaje, agitándose y empujando, girando y girando a través de todos esos túneles oscuros de trauma.

El matrimonio sagrado que una vez fue sellado en votos y destinado a durar toda la vida termina con el golpe de un bolígrafo barato comprado a granel en Costco.

Catholic is Open for Business in Tucson

C

ollege students in southern Arizona will soon have new opportunity. In fall 2020, The Catholic University of America will launch a collaborative degree in business with Pima Community College (PCC) in Tucson. The University has worked with more than 600 members of the community to customize this program for the city.

The University’s partnership with PCC has a dual aim: To make an “innovation investment” in a new generation of learners, especially those from the large and growing population in the area, and to help address demands on the local workforce. It will do this through close cooperation with area employers, according to Vincent Kiernan, dean of the Metropolitan School of Professional Studies at Catholic University that will administer the program. Indeed, it has formed a local employer network to help students build bridges to local businesses and to prepare students for the future of work.

Currently, less than half of Arizona residents of working age hold a college certificate or degree. State government and business leaders have committed to raising that to 60 percent by 2030. They project demand for another 1 million college credentials to reach that goal.

Courses at Catholic University-Tucson will be delivered through an innovative hybrid teaching model. It will combine interactive online modules by faculty in the Busch School of Business, small group discussions moderated by on-site instructional guides, and experiential learning tied to local businesses.

Mayor, Regina Romero City of Tucson, is excited to welcome The Catholic University of America to Tucson. “On behalf of the City of Tucson, I welcome the Catholic University of America to Tucson! Through their collaborative program with Pima Community College, students will be prepared to enter the workforce with the skills local employers are looking for, helping us retain local talent right here in Tucson,” said Mayor Regina Romero, “I’m excited for this opportunity to increase access to affordable higher education, especially for first generation college students.”

“An overwhelming majority of Hispanic families in the United States report they are Catholic. But historically they have lacked access to nearby Catholic colleges,” said Catholic University President John Garvey.

A University analysis shows that of the 25 U.S. cities with the largest increases in Hispanic population, nine have no Catholic college or university nearby.

The new program will start with one cohort of 20 students. Plans are to expand en-

rollment to 5 cohorts per year within three years. During the first two years, students will take both PCC and Catholic University courses. After earning their PCC associate degree, students will then complete their Bachelor of Arts degree in management through the University. Some 75 percent of all credits earned by students in the program will be awarded by Catholic University, says Kiernan.

For the past year, four San Miguel Catholic High School Sophomores have been hired through the Corporate Work Study Program to help build and launch the program. The students are incredible assets and are very much part of the Tucson team. The work students are involved with includes user testing on all aspects of the program, social media managers, researchers, and recruiters. In less than one year, this experience for these young women has given them a front row seat to programming, business meetings, recruitment, expansion of business knowledge, and has increased their confidence and skill set for forge their own dreams and goals after high school. The sophomore team includes Zedd Nganga, Ciela Paz, Vivian Figueroa, and Isabella Rodriguez.

With the support of generous donors, the use of existing space and leading-edge instructional technology, Catholic University also has been able to set tuition price for the program below the annual, in-state tuition of any major public university in Arizona.

ucson City Court has opened a customer service walk-up window to accept in-person payments consistent with other operational changes designed to combat the spread of COVID-19. The customer service window faces south on Alameda Street. at the City Court building,103 E. Alameda St. All other existing service and building access restrictions remain in force through at least June 1. These restrictions are listed below.

The court is limiting in-person access to the City Court building until further notice. All courtrooms are closed with the limited exceptions of those listed below.

The Court building is only open for the following activities: 1. People seeking orders of protection or appearing for related hearings. Otherwise, attendance is limited to counsel, court staff, law enforcement, and interpreters.

2. Domestic Violence Court attendance is limited to the attorneys, law enforcement, court staff and interpreters.

3. Mental Health Court attendance is limited to the above persons and treatment providers.

Attendance of any other individuals is prohibited and will only be permitted with approval of the assigned judge.

Initial appearances will continue at the jail. Filing of documents may be done online at tccweb@courts.az.gov or mailed to Tucson City Court, 103 E Alameda St., Tucson, AZ 85701.

“No estoy seguro si eres humano u otro gato” Los perros son capaces de ajustar su comportamiento social cuando tratan con otros perros o con humanos; pero los gatos no lo hacen totalmente. Levantar la cola, frotarse entre nuestras piernas e intentar limpiarnos es exactamente lo que los gatos hacen con otros gatos. Es probable entonces que no nos consideren una especie diferente.

“Me gusta pasar tiempo contigo” Probablemente no lo muestren abiertamente, pero realmente les caemos bien. Doña BARBARA ACOSTA VERDUGO (originaria de Altar), dedicada a los quehaceres del hogar, ¿Por qué tantos hijos? Recuerden que, en los tiempos de antes, hacían patria y los matrimonios procreaban los hijos que “Dios les Dé”, además que se entretenían. De más a menos tenemos a las sobrevivientes, comenzamos con: TEODORA DE JORGE ESPINOZA (Los Burros), quienes procrearon a Lorenzo+, Leonor+, Jorge, Abelardo+, Luis Antonio “Lichi”+, Adriana+, Ramon Ángel y Teodora Guadalupe de Alonso Granillo. MARIA DE LA LUZ DE FRANCISCO HERNANDEZ (Los Repunosos/Los Gorilas), tienen su estilo no se dé donde les vino esos motes(apodos), son buenas gentes a lo menos a mi me caen muy bien. Los descendientes: José Ramon, Pedro+, Francisco Felipe, Miguel Ángel “Mayco”, Martina y Horacio.

SOCORRO DE FRANCISCO “EL CHINO” LEAL al parecer tuvieron diez hijos hasta ahí. EMELINA DE ENRIQUE “EL CADERAS-PEPSI COLA” RUIZ CONTRERAS, sus vástagos Rosa Maria y Enrique/Epi. Ahora la cereza del pastel MARIA ELENA TRUJILLO ACOSTA VDA. DE DANIEL VALENZUELA (4-Nov-1936) y digo cereza a sus ochenta y pico es la única viva, sus hijos son: Julieta, casada con el Guatemalteco Luis Molina, Maria del Pilar, casada con Manuel “Anteojos” Ochoa, Daniel Jr. (divorciado), Rosa (divorciada) y Pablo (divorciado), a estos últimos que a toda madre no tienen perro que les ladre. Maria Elena “La Tia Nena” y el “Tio Daniel, ” formaron una bonita familia, a todos sus hijos les otorgaron los estudios necesarios para que triunfaran en la vida, Julieta fue funcionaria de WELLS FARGO, entre otros hobbies como la medicina alopática, Maria del Pilar junto con su esposo Manuel Ochoa formaron un emporio de Avante Optics, Daniel Ing. Ind. Y Gerente de Avante Optics, Rosa es Estilista por su cuenta, toda una profesional en la mate-

ria, Pablo es el mil usos de la familia, le encanta cocinar, es el chef de la familia. Ellos llegaron de Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, directo a Scottsdale, Arizona en 1967, “La Nena” trabajo durante muchos años en el Restaurant “Los Olivos” de la familia Robles (Magdalenenses), al jubilarse trabajó en el área de limpieza de casas y apartamentos y al final se dedicó a la venta de tamales aún a su edad (84), elabora aproximadamente tres mil tamales al año, sola en su casa en Tempe, Arizona. Daniel Valenzuela, nuestro querido tío Daniel, quien falleció (21-Jul-1925/01May-2014), se dedicó al trabajo de construcción por muchos años, anteriormente se dedicaba a conducir camiones de carga, también se retiro hasta el final gozando se su retiro. La tía Nena es familiar de todos los antes nombrados, pero también lo es de los Trujillos, a quienes les apodan los “Churris”, Los Valencias, Los Salazar, no estoy muy seguro de Pastor Maldonado la mayoría radican en Magdalena e Imuris. Respecto a Daniel sus parientes son los Gallardos -Flores, Murrieta, Villa y Gámez, los Valenzuelas de Caborca, Esperanza, Culiacán, Guadalajara y otras partes.

La vida social de Emelina y la Nena fue muy activa, antes quien hacia una fiesta en Magdalena todos los gorrones estábamos invitados sin ser invitados, en aquel entonces era un pueblo pequeño todos nos conocíamos a pie y dábamos la vuelta, pocos tenían carro; en cuanto escuchábamos música ahí era la pachanga ya las hermanas nos habían apartado sitio, lo mismo pasaba con el famoso “Blue Moon” de la Orquesta Hermanos Rivera/ Hermanos Minjarez, los bailes eran los domingos y algunas damas parecía iban a barrer la pista como las Chivas Bravas, las hermanas Gaxiola eran como veinte, las Miluyes, la Marina, las Arballo, las Acosta, las Galaz, las Preciado, las Reyes, las Parras, las Morales, las Lopez, (Panchy Duarte, Licha Murrieta, Martha Morales), ya cuando el bailongo estaba hecho comenzaban a llegar las Sotelo, las Leal, las Rochin, las Molina, las Jayassi las Mercado, las Pompas, las Terán, las Gallego, las Martínez, las Gámez, las Ramirez-Velez, las Mendoza-Bárcenas, las Gutierrez, las Gastelum, las Barnett, las Márquez, Irene Fernandez , Bertha Talamante y muchas otras, pero también se dejaban venir las muchachas de Santa Ana e Imuris, eran una chulada de bailes famosos en todo el norte de Sonora. En otra ocasión mencionaremos algunos de los

gorrones (hombres, no cabrones).

VA LA ANÉCDOTA: Cuando JULIETA VALENZUELA TRUJILLO DE MOLINA, la hija mayor cumplió sus 15 años vinieron a festejarla aquí, en ese tiempo vivían la mayoría de los hermanos(as) de Daniel todos fueron invitados, mas la familia de la Nena, amigos, compadres, etc., ya sumaban como doscientos, por supuesto que no había casas para tantos, yo le propuse regalarle la renta de la Cueva de los Leones, el tío Daniel, no aceptó aduciendo que no eran las “Fiestas de San Francisco”. Al final se efectuó en la casa de los Hernández donde hoy habita el “Mike Orci” enfrente de la Ferretera “El Bacerac”. La fiesta comenzó a eso de las ocho de la noche llegamos los parientes de Daniel con diez hieleras con todo, nos acomodamos en el patio. El otro tío Manuel valenzuela, (hermano), traía acondicionado su camioneta con un súper estéreo con excelente música, por supuesto el anfitrión quería brindarnos de lo que ellos tenían, pero al ir a buscar ya no había nada había volado, no pasó nada, como dije nosotros estábamos armados. Como a los 9pm vino Francisco platicó un ratito y nos dijo la familia está cansada, nos dio mucho gusto hayan venido les ruego se retiren vamos a dormir (imagínense a los Gorilas dormidos a las nueve). Por supuesto nos retiramos con nuestras hieleras a unos cuantos metros de la casa a un lado del puente, allí duramos hasta las tres de la mañana. Al día siguiente estábamos en mi casa asando carne y disfrutando unas cervezas bien heladas, por supuesto estaban Daniel y todos sus hermanos(as) con sus familias, cuando llego Santiago Salazar “El Piernudo’, nos dice: ¿Que creen? Los Gorilas tienen un fiestón con todas las cervezas, bebidas, botanas y demás que desaparecieron anoche. Huelga a decir a Daniel le pegó tremendo patatus creo no se repuso nunca. Por supuesto todos los presentes soltamos la carcajada pero también le hicimos ver, que eran chamacos la gran mayoría de las veces las cosas las hacen sin pensar, nosotros mismos, cuando adolescentes cometimos las mismas diabluras y peores. ¡qué cosas tiene la vida!
