What are we to do this summer? Some say be safe while others recommend be smart. All I know is that it has been one of the most stressful times for my family, friends, and incredible staff. I have come to learn that patience, ingenuity, and creativity allow us to try to adapt to others’ needs all around us. And trust me, I had some learning to do myself. Hopefully, you have taken this unwanted solitude to reflect on one’s path or maybe by helping others with true medical needs. Some have even taken the time to improve our lives by creating new ways to repurpose unused or wasted material products into a more positive, productive outcome in our now ever-changing society. The more I see, the more I learn how many true unsung heroes there are among us. It is just a little overwhelming that it took such a destructive pandemic to bring out the best in people worldwide. It only shows me how great we are when it becomes crunch time, especially in New York City, with the largest numbers in the country working against us. We all worked together in an unthinkable atmosphere fearing the unknown. But we triumphed enough to slow things down to a pace of regaining control of our destiny. So, please let us use what we have learned so far and keep applying what is needed to be done this summer. This way, we can avoid any second wave and learn from history. I look forward to hearing from you with comments, suggestions, and what you would like to see on the pages of New York Lifestyles and Pet Lifestyles magazines. Welcome summer and see you next issue.

THE JERSEY SHORE

PLEASANT TOWNS, FESTIVE BOARDWALKS & FAMILY-FRIENDLY BEACHES By Patricia Canole

Going to the Jersey Shore is a popular summer tradition for most sun worshippers from New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. Whether it is for a weekend or month-long stay, busy city-dwellers trade a subway for the beach scene and a vacation of beachcombing and cruising the boardwalk. While hotel accommodations—and there are plenty!—are available all along the 130-mile shore, most visitors choose to get comfortable in a rented house, simple condo, or even a beachfront mansion. Here is what to see and do on the Jersey Shore. Home to four stops on the Anthony Bourdain Food Trail, Atlantic City is one of the most notable destinations on the Jersey Shore, known for its world-class casinos, bustling four-mile-long boardwalk, the longest in the world, Absecon Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey, Lucy the Elephant and more. Noted for being one of the world’s entertainment capitals, Atlantic City is also widely regarded for its welcoming LGBT scene. Visitors will find all forms of fun and relaxation on the city’s miles of free beaches. Do not miss the famous saltwater taffy!

Atlantic City

Cape May Marina

OCEAN CITY

Known as the America’s Family Resort, Ocean City is often voted the best beach in New Jersey. There are 8 miles of shore waiting for swimming, boogie-boarding, and building sandcastles. A boardwalk lines 2.5 miles of beachfront. Families enjoy mini-golf, carnival games, and a water park. Go sky high on the Ferris wheel followed with a few bites of homemade fudge—always a treat.

CAPE MAY

Best known for its quiet beaches, incredible Victorian architecture, historical sites such as the lighthouse dating back to 1859, Cape May is one of New Jersey’s most charming towns that keeps visitors returning each year. Marked as a National Historic District, the entire city is home to nearly 600 preserved Victorian buildings with a popular trolley tour available to explore it all. More to see in Jersey Shore’s southernmost beach town includes exceptional restaurants as well as Cape May Winery and Cape May County Park and Zoo.

ATLANTIC CITY

WILDWOOD

Here is New Jersey’s most popular family beach destination, Wildwood has a free beach that is so wide— nearly 2,000 feet in spots—there is a taxi service to get you to the water. The boardwalk is lined with attractions, stores, restaurants, arcades, and water parks. Morey’s Piers is the classic amusement park here, familyowned and operated since 1969, with more than 100 rides ranging from an Instagram-worthy Ferris wheel and roller coaster little kid-friendly spinners on three separate piers along with six beach blocks in addition to two spotless beachfront water parks.

ASBURY PARK

This little bit of urban cool offers arts, music, and great food—plus the sand and sea. Teens will love the foodie options, and the Pinball Museum where you can play as much as you want for a small fee. And a boardwalk would not be complete without unique shops and crafts. Most notable, of course, is Asbury Park’s mark on the music scene with The Stone Pony, where Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi both played here in the early days, the Wonder Bar, Asbury Lanes, and the restored Convention Center.

SPRING LAKE

Considered by many to be one of the more refined spots on Jersey Shore. Stately homes, quiet beaches and a noncommercial boardwalk await visitors. Then there is the gorgeous lake, lined with weeping willows and quiet nooks, perfect for a serene evening stroll.

SCENTS OF SENSUAL STYLE SUMMER FRAGRANCE DELIGHTS By Karen Dubin & Lori Zelenko

ur ability to smell is the most emotional of all our senses, and the power of fragrance and sensory memory is extraordinary! With one whiff, it can conjure up vivid memories from the tapestry of your life, and it can take you to places you’ve visited and cherished or let you imagine colorful landscapes that exist only in your mind. Inhaling a scent can remind you of a special person you have encountered or coax you to dream of the one you’ve yet to meet. Fragrance is truly your private magic carpet ride. Fragrance has been used as a tool of seduction since the dawn of time. The first temptress was surely Eve, who conveniently lived in a lush garden filled with aromatic flowering plants and succulent fruit trees. It was there in the paradise of Eden that she enticed her man with a freshly plucked, glistening apple. Adam inhaled the fragrant surroundings, savored a juicy bite, and felt light-headed as if he were floating in a sea of irresistible perfume and helpless against her sensory charms. Eve knew what she was doing, and the rest is history.

The beauty of fragrance is that it speaks to your heart, and hopefully, someone else’s. –Elizabeth Taylor

STYLE

LIFE & STYLE BEAT THE HEAT EDITION By Griffin Miller

hile indoor-living has its advantages (all-day pajamas; binge-watching reality shows; guilt-free noshing), outside summer beckons, and who are we to ignore its siren’s song? Precautions? Always. Especially as we head to the Hamptons, Central Park, and indulge (warily) in dining al fresco. Thus, I give you my Editorial picks for Summer 2020, whether you are poolside, patio chic, or revamping your inner sanctum into a sunny paradise. It is all good!

GAME CHANGER

Bored board gamers—i.e., those of us whose desire to Pass Go, land a triple-word score or sacrifice yet another pawn—it is time to indulge in Sequence. This addictive family-friendly diversion involves cards, chips, and strategy for two to 12 players (7 and up). Since it landed on our patio table, my husband and I have become obsessed. Highly recommended for player types willing to confront some very wild Jacks in their quest to form a Sequence. Info: jaxgames.com.

TUBING WITH THE PERKS

Should your personal safety zone allow for a large outdoor swimming pool—already an excellent plus—prepare to be wowed by PoolCandy’s Tube Runner, an ingenious motorized float with a 3-blade propeller and 360-degree control. Assemble multiple Tubes and a fearless group ready to tackle a lake, pond, river, or Olympic-sized pool, and you can expect a game of bumper floats with madcap button-pushing. Or you can cruise along at a relaxing pace anywhere you like – your choice. Info: poolcandy.net. 30 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

FASHION FORWARD

Ditch the sweats, and oversized tees, the world (cautiously) awaits, so why not greet it in a little something to brighten the season? For some time now, I’ve had my eye on Ala von Auersperg’s awesome resort wear, and what better time than now to give in to my flights of fashion, even if only for virtual brunches or lounging about? Which brings me to the Rachel Poncho in Gardenia. One sleeve, one glorious flutter of lightweight mesh draping the other arm and pairing it with a swimsuit or matching items from the collection. Info: alavonauersperg.com.

REST ASSURED

One thing about quarantine: you spend more time in bed reading, sleeping, working, streaming, etc. Sometimes, though, you can’t get comfy or fall asleep. Too hot. Too sweaty. Too tangled up. PeachSkinSheets has solved such heat and renegade sheet predicaments with panache and a smart, super soft fabric that jettisons moisture and stays cool. I give them bonus points for fitted sheets that don’t slip off the mattress and a staggering number of color choices. This reckless sleeper is falling in love with falling asleep. Info:peachskinsheets.com.

PEACE & PLENTY

Haight-Ashbury. Flower Power. Peter Max. Free Love, Twiggy. The 60s are back, baby, yeah! The look was catnip to jet setters back then, and now—thanks to the ingenious minds at Be Clear Handbags—there’s the Peace + Love Graffiti Tote, bringing back the look, feel and zeitgeist of iconic yesterday. As for today, germs are not an issue: wipe down your bag with alcohol and done. Plus, should you wish to turn tote to crossbody, no problem: the website offers a way neat selection of straps. Info: beclearhandbags.com.

DESIGNING WOMAN

The masterminds behind handcrafted jewelry dazzle me with their artistry, none more than Juli, aka the creative force behind Julio Designs. With an eye for the unique, she has created line after line of statement necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Having been to Malta, I was drawn to Juli’s use of the Maltese cross in several of her pieces, only to learn she has made a study of world crosses for their design elements. The Maltese Cross Hoop Earrings (as shown with matching necklace) are compliment-generating favorites—both in person and on Zoom. Next stop, bracelets! Info: juliodesigns.com.

JUST IN CASE

Wondering what trendy Apple laptops are wearing this season, whether on the road, working from home, or braving socially distanced boardrooms? I have got this one: Chic Geeks’ Emerald Faux Crocodile MacBook Case. The classiest of greens with tactile allure, this 100 percent cruelty-free cover is a must have for any one ready to stand out in a crowd of Apple laptops with ho-hum covers or (for shame!) none at all. I am so ready to join the ranks. Traditionalist Alert: the Faux Crocodile case also comes in black. Info: chicgeeks.com.

SIPPING LIKE THE STARS

The provocative name, Prisoner Wine Company, and ominous labels are only the prequels to this intriguing line of wines with a celebrity following. The A-listers who have pledged Prisoner allegiance include J-Law, Kendall Jenner, Erik Harris, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. And since it’s summer when white wine rules, Prisoner’s “The Snitch” and “Blindfold”, with their Chardonnay base deftly melded with select varietals, are a superstar in their own right. I am sold—make that a devoted fan—as is Lady Gaga, who shares my passion for Blindfold. Info:theprisonerwinecompany.com.

SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS

I do not lightly use the term Divine Decadence, but here I sit, passionately involved with a pint of eCreamery’s Mint Cookie Crunch ice cream. Connoisseur-worthy, custom churned, and hand-packed, it is a bewitching take on my favorite flavor. But there is more. You can choose your flavor(s) from an extensive menu, or you can customize, for the ice cream recipe of your dreams. Either way, you can print a message or photo onto the on the pints—all delivered to your door in frozen splendor. Info: ecreamery.com.

CLEAN SWEEP

Speaking of laptops—not to mention Smartphones, tablets, fitness trackers, and any other techno gizmos that rock your life—microbes, bacteria, and miscellaneous yuck are making their electronic lives a living hell and compromising your health. Thankfully, there is a portable savior to be had: HÄNS Swipe. This pocket-sized lifesaver boasts both an Antimicrobial Cleaning side (applies solution; is refillable to last ad infinitum), and an Antibacterial Polishing side (removes residue, polishes, and is washable). MIRROR LAKE INN RESORT AND SPA AN AUTHENTIC ADIRONDACK EXPERIENCE By Paul Seth

ummer, Fall, Winter, Spring. The Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid, N.Y. offers an authentic Adirondack experience in all seasons. It’s been said that selling real estate is about location, location, location. However, when one steps onto this luxe, seven-acre property where all lodging overlooks Mirror Lake and the Adirondack High Peaks, the location theory works well in this business, too. The only AAA Four Diamond resort in Upstate New York has this unique way of offering luxurious accommodations, upscale dining, a world class spa and salon and delivers it all in a friendly, unpretentious manner that says “welcome to our home”. HEALTH, SAFETY AND SPECIAL PACKAGES

In addition to providing guests with such service, the Mirror Lake Inn also showed visitors an enhanced level of concern when no one was around, the result of the coronavirus which closed the hotel on March 16. Ownership felt a moral and civic responsibility to temporarily cease operations and help flatten the curve of the pandemic. But now, as the northern counties of New York State have advanced through the state’s four phases of reopening, the staff ’s friendliness has greeted guests once again with open arms. When visitors now walk through the doors, they notice an elevated level of cleanliness that is noteworthy. “With the health and safety of our staff and guests uppermost on our minds, we have taken the concept of cleaning, that was thorough enough to help us achieve 36 consecutive AAA Four Diamond awards, and invested time, energy and money into making it even better,” said Ed Weibrecht, Mirror Lake Inn owner. “The past three months have landed us in a completely new and different world thanks to COVID-19. But our guests can rest assured that since March 16 when we closed, we have researched new methods and invested in new, state-of-the-art hospital-grade cleaning equipment. Equally as important, we have made a commitment to everyone who enters our resort, be they visitors or staff, that they should have the utmost confidence in our consideration of their health.” In conjunction with the Inn’s return to daily operation on June 26, the Mirror Lake Inn is offering several “welcome back” packages for stays through December 20, 2020: •Stay four nights in any room type and get the fifth night free. •Stay 14 consecutive nights or more and receive 50 percent off the nightly rate. These offers must be booked directly with the hotel, so call the onsite reservations team at 518-523-2544. They will help you make the best decision for your group or family, and can inform

you of the myriad of activities that you can enjoy while in Lake Placid no matter the season. For a complete listing of Mirror Lake Inn packages, please log on to: mirrorlakeinn.com/our-packages/ The property’s “single-loaded” construction and design concept of the magnificent resort naturally lends itself to better social distancing as there are less guests in the hallways than traditional lodging properties where rooms are placed on both sides of the corridor. No other Adirondack region hotel is designed in this manner. With health and safety front and center, here’s a snapshot of what guests can expect when they enter the Inn: •As per the Governor’s executive order, all guests and employees are required to wear face coverings when in indoor common areas including hallways and elevators or wherever social distancing is not possible. •Hospital-grade Ultraviolet-C disinfecting tools continue to be deployed throughout the property to ensure the highest levels of cleaning and disinfection. •Hospital-grade Electrostatic sprayers are in use to ensure the most thorough levels of disinfection on high touchpoint areas. •Remote check-in capabilities are being implemented via a smartphone app, allowing you to check in from your vehicle upon arrival, avoiding the traditional check in process. •All staff will wear PPE equipment while working in common areas or wherever social distancing is impractical. •Maximum hotel occupancy has been reduced to 75 percent. •Whenever possible, guest rooms will be left vacant for 72 hours for a potential virus to die without a host after each guest departure. To review the entirety of the Inn’s new policies and protocols, please log on to: mirrorlakeinn.com/covid-19-safety/

DISTINCT DINING OPTIONS

The pandemic has also resulted in a change to the dining scene inside the Mirror Lake Inn. The View Restaurant, AAA Four Diamond rated the past 13 straight years, has been reimagined and enlarged with greater spacing as part of the new safety measures. The redesign includes hardwood flooring to facilitate better cleaning and sanitation. Taste Bistro has now been integrated into The View with the bistro’s most popular items to be found on The View’s menu. The end result provides guests with the best of both worlds: a combination of upscale dining and elegant comfort food. Taste’s footprint has become The View Lounge. The hip Cottage Café, on the shore of Mirror Lake, continues to welcome diners and revelers for its 43rd year. The Cottage presents both indoor and outdoor settings, and now features yet a third open air option to complement its deck and patio. For added service and efficiency, the Inn is implementing “to-go” apps for these restaurants, allowing guests to order and pre-pay electronically from their own device.

SPA, SALON AND FITNESS CENTER

The critically acclaimed spa and salon are well-known for their level of pampering, comforting and decompressing, and they also do it with consideration and care for everyone’s health and safety. A physical barrier has been inserted at the check-in desk. Treatment schedules have been altered to ensure ample time for cleaning and disinfecting treatment surfaces between customers. The equipment in the fitness center is cleaned and disinfected between guest use. Manicures and pedicures are limited to one at a time, although booking as a safe group is permissible. In high traffic areas of the spa and salon, social distance markers have been put in place. The gift shop has similar policies. “We are insisting on these protocols for the safety of our guests, employees and the local community,” said Weibrecht. “Until such time as we, in conjunction with the State of New York, determine that it is prudent to relax these protocols, we will strictly adhere to them and look forward to a time when we might be able to lift those protocols.” 34 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

A HOST OF DAILY ACTIVITIES

The hotel’s approach to COVID-19 is geared to ensure that guests can comfortably and confidently enjoy the Mirror Lake Inn and Lake Placid in all seasons beginning right now. It has been said that summer is a perfect time for a visit to Lake Placid. You can start with ideal weather that appeals to city dwellers. This region of the Adirondack Mountains offers comfortable mornings and nights (bring a sweater) for easy sleeping. In between, the prime daytime hours deliver temperatures in the 70s and 80s with little humidity. If the truth be told, with such perfect weather, most area residents don’t feel the need for air conditioning, opting instead for open windows and fans on the warmest of days. It’s in these months that the Mirror Lake Inn’s landscaping bursts creating a selfie stage frequented by many guests and passersby. Hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, golf, tennis, walking, jogging, visiting Lake Placid’s Olympic sites, driving to the summit of nearby Whiteface Mountain or riding its gondola are all on the menu of activities and can easily fill vacation days. Or just relax by the Inn’s indoor and outdoor pools or at its private beach.

THE FALL SEASON

Those who pay close attention will notice the start of foliage change as Labor Day approaches. Mother Nature’s palette of red, orange and yellow can stun a first-timer to these woods, but foliage insiders will tell you clearly that the colors in the north appear earlier than elsewhere, and with that, those same colors come to the ground sooner than most places. In September and much of October, the activities remain the same, but at cooler temperatures. The fall foliage creates a splendor that is ideal for hiking any of the 46 Adirondack peaks. Many visitors seek the help of local guides the Mirror Lake Inn can make that connection for its guests.

THE WINTER SEASON

As autumn morphs into winter, the things-to-do list changes, and of course, so does the mercury. When snow sports season arrives upon us in November, winter enthusiasts beseech the weather gods to lower the temps to facilitate the making of snow at Whiteface Mountain for skiing and boarding, at Mt. Van Hoevenberg for cross country skiers, as well as icemaking for those who enjoy skating laps on the same Olympic oval where Eric Heiden won five gold medals during the 1980 Winter Olympics. Later, as we cross into the new year, Mirror Lake becomes safely frozen and offers a winter recreation park just steps from your hotel room. Skating, hockey, snow shoeing, tobogganing and cross-country skiing are all within immediate access of the Inn. Lake Placid has sent native sons and daughters to every Winter Olympics since the start of the Games in 1924. The most successful

of the local contingent is Andrew Weibrecht, son of the Mirror Lake Inn’s owners. Weibrecht captured Olympic silver and bronze medals in 2018 and 2014, respectively, in alpine skiing. His medals greet guests at hotel check-in. Now retired, he and wife Denja are involved with the operation of the resort, adding to the familyowned legacy. Andrew can be seen meeting and greeting visitors at breakfast in The View Restaurant and skiing with them at Whiteface Mountain. The hotel offers Ski With Andrew, exclusive to hotel guests. The Inn has a Nordic skiing complement, Ski With Andrea. The cross-country ski version partners guests with German native Andrea Henkel Burke, a four-time Olympic medalist and eighttime world champion in biathlon. Insider travel tip: stay at the Inn from Sunday to Friday in nonholiday periods. Wherever you turn, it will feel like a private country club.

SPRING IS ARRIVING

When the calendar turns to March, many people think winter is winding down. That may be true in some destinations, but not in this one. The skiing and riding in March and April gets even better with longer days, higher sun and warming temperatures. It’s time to shed the layers and goggles and reach for the designer sunglasses and vests so you may enjoy lunch on the deck at Whiteface Mountain. In reality, this is how it is in until mid-April when the chapter closes on the winter season and makes way for the dawning of spring. Officially, fly fishing season begins April 1 bringing a unique pairing of activities into play: ski or snowboard in the morning and then cast your rod in the famed Ausable River in the afternoon. Need a guide? No problem as Andrew, also an accomplished fisherman, can escort you around both sports if you’d like. Snow and ice disappearing in April prepare the Adirondacks for the advent of warm weather activities in May. It may be your perfect time for some needed solitude. As your friends opted for crowded spring destinations, you found this quiet oasis of civility just a fivehour drive from home, almost entirely via interstate. At the Mirror Lake Inn’s sister property, the Whiteface Club and Resort, the golf season tees off on its championship, par 71 layout; fish continue to bite; hiking trails dry out for easier ascents and descents; bicycle gears begin to mesh, the rhythmic pops of a tennis volley become more frequent; the distant hum of small craft can be heard on the nearby body of water known as Lake Placid, while paddlers quietly move about the perimeter of Mirror Lake. Yes. This is the kind of serene experience that beckons those who seek respites from the density of urban life, and they should know that it’s theirs in all seasons of the year. •

TRAVEL

ROAD TRIP TO THE FINGER LAKES WINERIES, WATERFALLS & MORE IN CENTRAL NEW YORK AP Connolly

e are aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we are continuing to feature destinations like The Finger Lakes, we encourage you to visit destinations/hotels/restaurants online to see if they are receiving visitors. We believe that supporting local attractions is essential now more than ever, and we hope to inspire your future adventures! New York’s Finger Lakes, a scenic region of 11 lakes stretching across 14 counties, is vast. It is known for its many award-winning wineries, but you will quickly realize there is so much more to discover—and just as quickly realize that figuring out what to do on a visit can be so relaxing. The best way to plan a trip to this region is to narrow it to a few villages and wineries around some of the larger lakes, and while an itinerary couldn’t possibly cover all it has to offer, it is a great start.

CAYUGA LAKE

It is hard not to be charmed by the village of Aurora on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes. There are wineries in the area, including Long Point Winery, overlooking the lake and Bet the Farm, a small tasting room/market selling New York State products like cheeses and chutneys. Arts and craft fans should visit the MacKenzie-Childs studio and shop for its one-of-a-kind products. The idyllic campus of Wells College is a few steps down the road. After a day of exploring the area, have a quick bite at Dorie’s Bakery (it turns into a pizza place and wine bar in the evenings). Another scenic spot to explore is Cayuga Lake’s northwestern corner. At Knapp Winery, sample dry Riesling in its rustic tasting room. Enjoy sampling cheeses (cheddar, gouda, blue, etc.) at Muranda Cheese Company on a dairy farm owned by Tom Murray, considered by many as the ambassador for the Finger Lakes growing cheesemaking industry. Be sure to round out the day with a visit to the National Women’s Hall of Fame, which celebrates everyone from Sacagawea to Sally Ride. Nearby is the Wesleyan Chapel site of the First Women’s Rights Convention convened in 1848. Pioneering women, including suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, organized the movement. Eat & Stay The village is also known for its many historic mansions. The luxury collection called the Inns of Aurora includes the lakeside Aurora Inn, housed in an 1833 Federal-style building. Nearby are the E.B. Morgan House and Rowland House. Wallcourt Hall boasts the most modern décor. Once the sun sets dine on delicious charcuterie and scallops at Aurora Inn’s restaurant. The wine list features an abundance of local offerings, including a terrific sparkling wine from Heart & Hands Wine Company. JULY/AUGUST 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 37

SENECA LAKE

After Cayuga Lake adventures, travel to the southeastern shore of Seneca Lake, where you’ll find Chateau LaFayette Reneau. Nestled on a hillside sloping down to the water, this winery is one of the prettiest settings imaginable to sample wine. Atwater Estate Vineyards, next door, has impressive views, too. From this vantage point, it is a quick ride down to Watkins Glen on the southern tip of Seneca Lake—be sure to pull over to snap a photo of the cascading Hector Falls along the way. Eat & Stay For a memorable meal, head to Graft Wine + Cider Bar, which has a farm-to-table cuisine (the Brussels sprouts salad and the roasted carrots with dates, almonds and yogurt is delicious). Just a few minutes away, the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel situated on the prime lakefront. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and wellequipped—many feature lake-side views. On late afternoons, head to the outdoor patio; it’s the best spot to catch the sunset. On cool evenings sit by the fire pit and relax!

SKANEATELES LAKE

The next stop is the impossibly charming Village of Skaneateles on the northern tip of the lake. It is a beautiful walking village on the lake, one of the purest and most beautiful lakes in the world. With its quaint, treelined streets, 19th-century homes, interesting antique shops, boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants, you may not want to leave quickly. Be sure to visit Anyela’s Vineyards and sip a glass of chardonnay as you gaze at calm blue waters of the lake. Eat & Stay Browse the village shops, visit historic Sherwood Inn, and brave the lines to lunch on a fish sandwich at Doug’s Fish Fry. For evening dining options, reserve a table at The Krebs restaurant in a meticulously restored 1899 home. Be sure to order oysters and duck with bok choy along with local wines, of course. Book a stay at Mirbeau Inn & Spa, one of the Finger Lakes’ most lauded properties. The wood-beamed luxurious accommodations face onto a flower-filled central garden and koi pond, created a Zen-like vibe; the spa with indoor/outdoor soaking pools and Vichy treatments helps, too. Whether you are relaxing at the spa or taking a moment to sip a few wines glasses, savor the incredible beauty of this region known as the Finger Lakes.•

The spectacular landmarked Art-Deco grand lobby with Ralph Walker-designed vaulted ceiling and hand-painted ceiling murals depict the historical advancement of human communication. Jeffrey Beers International also designed the Grand Lobby to include a curated collection of seating, lounge, and entertaining areas exclusively for residents and their guests. One Hundred Barclay features one- to five-bedroom spacious loft residences with custom walnut-paneled entry door with custom brass finish hardware and oversized double-hung windows with a captivating river, park, and city views. “One Hundred Barclay offers incredible value and an unparalleled lifestyle,” said Jordan Brill of the Magnum Real Estate Group. “Each residence is impeccably designed, and when you consider the amenities, wellness program, landmarked architecture, and location, it’s clear why buyers put down roots here,” Here are two select residences to consider:

RESIDENCE 21B Available for immediate occupancy, Residence 21B is a 3-bedroom (convertible to 4), 4 bath loft spanning 2,869 square feet of graciously proportioned interior. “A standout feature,” remarked Brill, “is the 1,000 square feet of private outdoor space with views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline. It also includes a gas barbecue, water line, and electricity.” Beautiful 7-foot casement windows, 10-foot high ceilings, and 4-inch white oak floors create ample proportions with generous light and air. ARK ANGELS

PRESERVING PRICELESS PIECES By Ruth J. Katz

e don’t like to turn anybody down. We’re not snobs,” allows Anatoly Kristhul, the owner, along with wife, Rena, of ARK Restoration & Design, Ltd. The Manhattan firm specializes in repairing, conserving, and restoring objects of all types. From valuable museum treasures and objets de vertu to dearly cherished personal possessions—the lares and penates of our own homes—which may not have much intrinsic value or provenance, but have a lock on your emotions. At any given moment, ARK’s pleasingly packed atelier might easily contain a diverse plethora of works, waiting for attention. A Renaissance reliquary, an alabaster statuette, white-metal (spelter) sculptures, Chinese artifacts, oil paintings, and countless porcelain, terra cotta, jade, and metal trinkets of all stripes are just a few examples of the personally prized possessions clients have entrusted to them. “We can repair almost anything,” Anatoly proudly declares. “And, when it comes to sentimental items—where the repair would cost more than the item itself—we try to find a way to make it feasible. We know what it is to be attached to something beautiful.”

FROM STRAW TO GOLD

They do, indeed, understand. The Kristhuls were forced to leave most of their beloved possessions in the former Soviet Union when they immigrated to New York City in the late 1970s. They found themselves buying “pretty, but damaged things”—a chip here or a crack there—from an uptown gallery. They put their combined, highly skilled knowledge to use, to repair these sad, imperfect knickknacks. As they ministered to these new acquisitions, they concomitantly added to their already comprehensive knowledge, learning more about the technical properties of diverse materials. “We were always experimenting and researching new techniques to repair each challenging object successfully,” notes Anatoly. After they performed their first-aid magic on their new collection of cherished tchotchkes, they returned to their favorite haunt with the repaired items, looking to trade up and acquire new treasures. The gallery owner, astounded by the skillful expertise their repairs represented, spread the word to other gallerists. Not surprisingly, many dealers were intrigued by the Kristhuls’ ability to turn straw into gold, and the pair landed a steady stream of commissions from places like Hyde Park Antiques, Ltd., Kentshire Galleries, Newell Galleries, and countless other antique dealers. Today, they still work for galleries, as well as for auction houses (like Sotheby’s), and museums. But, the bulk of their work comes from private citizens—many collectors with pedigrees like David Rockefeller, and other, less “storied” clients.

A LABOR OF LOVE

One day, when we were visiting, Rena was custom-crafting enameled, international signaling flags (each, 3/8-inch square) to spell out “I Love You,” to go on a miniature, precious-metal sailboat. (They also design and craft uniquely exquisite jewelry). At any given moment, the shelves in their 2,000-square-foot loft are chockablock with “patients” awaiting medical attention—ranging from the routine to the rare: An $800,000, mid-19th-century vase from the Russian Imperial Factory; a shattered piece of not-terribly-valuable lusterware; a dozen Tiffany vases; a Tung Dynasty terra cotta horse; an Austrian clock; a Delft tobacco jar. Repair time can vary from as little as a month to a year, if a piece requires tedious, time-consuming labor. Rena adds that all repairs are reversible, because, as she puts it, “We are not the last stop in the evolution of restoration and conversation technology. Twenty years from now, there might be better methods, and someone may want to reverse a repair, to take advantage of a better, more modern way.” Above all, the Kristhuls do as little as possible to alter the original. Rena also points out that the worst thing a client can do is repair something himself. “Then we lose the ‘fresh lock’ that a clean break affords us,” she cautions. HEALTH & WELLNESS

ARE YOU BEACH BODY READY?

6 TREATMENTS TO MAKE YOU SHINE THIS SUMMER By AP Connolly

ummer has arrived and with warmer temperatures it often means more time at the beach or pool. If one of your desires is to improve your summer look, there’s still time. Why not consider plastic surgery to boost your confidence under the hot summer sun. Unlike the past when procedures were “little white lies,” undergoing treatments now is an everyday occurrence. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Farrokh Shafaie told us plastic surgery is no longer whispered: “It’s just viewed as a reasonable maintenance.” With offices in New York City and Summit, New Jersey, the acclaimed plastic surgeon performs many procedures which can be done relatively swiftly with perfect precision and in many cases minimally invasive. Below Dr. Shafaie shares the top five fixes to get your body (and soul) beach body ready.

BREAST AUGMENTATION

The breast augmentation along with an internal lift allows the creation of fullness by restoring lost volume caused by aging or pregnancy. During the procedure, to prevent excess scarring, Shafaie use a bi-plane technique that involves a 2-level dissection: one over the pectoral muscle, and one under. The implant is then placed under that muscle. That, in addition to augmenting the breast, will not only allow the breast to appear fuller and lifted but will also create a more balanced overall appearance. 50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

Dr. Shafaie

ABDOMINAL SHAPING

The abdominal area can be tricky to tone due to loose skin and sagging tissue, especially after multiple pregnancies. When it comes to lax skin and hanging tissue, no amount of diet and exercise will eliminate it. The doctor can do this procedure in his office, using Vaser Lipo Selection technology. The device melts the fat, reduces the prominence of abdominal bulging, and moderately tightens the skin to create a flat and wellformed abdominal region. Additionally, this minimally invasive technique leaves less downtime than a traditional Tummy Tuck.

BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT

There is nothing more daunting than an undefined derriere. Whether in a swimsuit, shorts or even jeans and leggings, there is no question that a more defined area is better. Named for the beautiful Brazilian women who are toned and fit, it has now become popular with American women. But not all butt lifts are safe, so you need to be sure you go to a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been trained in this procedure. Shafaie harvests a patient’s fat from their abdomen, waist, hips, or thighs. After processing the fat, he then reinjects it into the buttock to create the patient’s desired roundness.

THIGH GAP/TURKEY NECK

A thigh gap is the natural space found at the top of the inner thigh on those often seen with toned legs. This can be achieved easily with the minimally invasive Vaser Lipo Selection technology. Shafaie inserts a Vaser Lipo Selection cannula through a small incision into the area being treated. Once liquified, he gently suctions it with the final stage using the same technology probe to tighten the skin. This treatment can also be used to fix a turkey neck, which is a fatty, saggy area just below the chin which is very often impossible to correct with diet and exercise.

As the eyebrows and forehead age, they may become quite wrinkled, in some cases even sagging and obscuring vision. LIQUID FACE LIFT

The most treated area of the body is the face—more so in summer than other seasons. Injectables like Dysport and similar dermal fillers can instantly refresh your look without the need for surgery or downtime. Dysport works by temporarily limiting facial muscle movements, which allows frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines to smooth away. Injectable fillers not only fill in deeper furrows and laugh lines, they also give the look of fullness and youth within minutes.

BROW LIFT

As the eyebrows and forehead age, they may become quite wrinkled, in some cases even sagging and obscuring vision. This drooping skin can give off the impression of a tired look and can also make the expression appear angry. After a consultation, and a quick procedure, you can return to looking refreshed. Surgery is performed under anesthesia. Not only will it make you look more youthful, it will uplift your self-confidence, making you feel more energetic. THE MARK RESTAURANT BY JEAN-GEORGES ELEGANT CUISINE WITH A MODERN EDGE By Anne Raso

efore you even ask, The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges inside The Mark Hotel at 77th and Madison will meet a jaded NYC foodie’s expectation and then some. Everything that master chef and restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten attaches his name to gathers a tremendous amount of media attention—and The Mark Restaurant lives up to JGV’s high standards of freshness and simplicity. The restaurant is right off the modernized Mark Hotel lobby with its maze-like black and white tiled flooring and modern lighting. The Mark Restaurant’s décor includes oversized deep upholstered chairs, textured gray fabric wall coverings, geometric lights installed on the edges of the hallway entrances, and striped gold, tan, and black carpeting. All this creates a sleek yet comfortable dining experience; you will want to slink deep into your cushy chair and never leave.

A LONG HISTORY The legendary Jean-Georges is very hands-on with his numerous eateries, including the selection of his kitchen staff. He has known The Mark Restaurant’s Executive Chef Pierre Schutz for over three decades, so it comes as no surprise that they have worked in the same kitchens and teamed up on creating the trademark Mark Restaurant style. Schutz shared his exciting journey to The Mark Restaurant kitchen with New York Lifestyles, which began in Europe. “I worked in Switzerland, cooking in different hotels, really perfecting my culinary craft and understanding the world of luxury hospitality. In 1985, I was hired by the Lafayette Hotel in Boston, where I had the privilege of meeting Jean-Georges. Soon after, We worked together in New York City at The Drake Hotel. This is where I discovered how much I loved being in the kitchen with him.” Following this, Schutz moved to Asia, as the Head Chef at The Westin Chosun in Seoul, South Korea. “I worked there for over a year and immersed myself in Eastern cooking and ingredients, which is why I think our French-Asian fusion at The Mark Restaurant has become so popular.” Because Schutz possessed excellent French culinary roots and extensive experience cooking in the Eastern provinces, Jean-Georges invited him to help open Vong restaurant in New York City. “I worked there as a chef for 15 years. During this time, JeanGeorges started to open many restaurants worldwide and extensively grow his brand. Once Vong closed in 2009, I began the best cooking experience of my career.” Grilled Black Sea Bass ©Caroline Voagen Nelson

JJean-Georges Vongerichten

SPONTANEITY & TEAMWORK You will notice that the menu at The Mark Restaurant runs the gamut from fresh seafood (including guest favorite Tuna Tartare) to homemade pasta to American comfort food classics like grass-fed steaks and even Butterscotch Pudding. Scattered throughout are unusual mixes that are pure culinary genius like Lamb Chops over Sautéed Broccoli Rabe, Pizza topped with Truffle Paste, and Homemade Caramel Corn over Caramel Gelato. Schutz revealed that The Mark’s exciting dishes are often created when he and JGV are tossing ideas off their heads. “We work closely together as a culinary team. Jean-Georges is extremely hands-on, and the restaurant never introduces a new dish without his full approval. We meet weekly—even daily if necessary—discussing new dishes and new ingredients. The best times are when we experiment in the kitchen together.”

LOOKING AHEAD

According to Schutz, The Mark Restaurant menu will always feature seasonal foods, focusing on the freshest ingredients available to us. “We have wonderful relationships with many local farmers,” he explained, “who ensure that we have the best batch of the upcoming harvest.” When we visited earlier this year, we sampled some of the creative vegan and vegetarian-friendly fare which delighted us—particularly the Tuna Tartare, as mentioned earlier and freshly made pasta with garden-fresh sauces and artisanal cheeses. Schutz stated, “We have focused on this area in the past few years and are proud to share that our menus now include a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian options. Our kitchen is also known amongst our clientele as being one of the most accommodating in New York City—there is no dietary request that we cannot do for our guests. I think that this is another reason why we have such a strong group of repeat diners. We always remember their specifications.” The tastiest items on the menu for those who are vegan, and vegetarian include The Boston Lettuce & Arugula Salad, the Avocado or Black Truffle Pizza, and the Vegan Fresh Fettuccine. The Spiced Vegetable Samosas and any of our vegetable dishes like Roasted Maitake Mushrooms, Roasted Brussels Sprouts, and Sautéed Spinach can be combined and served as the main entrée.”

SEEING STARS

You could hear the excitement in Schutz’s voice when he spoke of the restaurant’s stellar guests. “I have served many celebrities. I would never have had a chance to serve these people anywhere else. I am a big tennis fan, and being Swiss-born, having prepared a meal for Roger Federer was a fantastic moment. “However, the highlight will always be Jean-Georges! We produce the best dishes together, and that keeps things exciting for our guests. I also must say that after more than three decades of working in the luxe hospitality field and cooking at some of the best hotels in the world, none have ever had the caliber of A-list celebrities like The Mark Restaurant does—and on a very consistent basis.”

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Schutz loves that The Mark Restaurant (which just celebrated its 10th anniversary) keeps things “fresh and simple” with a French-Asian flair. He concluded with a smile, “There is always a healthy dose of both— this allows us to stick to some classic French culinary while being experimental with the exciting use of Asian ingredients in a lot of our dishes. We are here at The Mark Restaurant to excite our customers, but at the same time as a hotel, we also understand the appeal of the strong French influence. We adhere to a simple sophistication that exudes the modern luxury that the hotel has become synonymous with. We offer a vast selection of menu options, which I think ensures that there is something for everyone. We have used the successful Jean-Georges formula while adding a bit of The Mark flair.” For more info on The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges, go to themarkrestaurantnyc.com. Reservations are recommended. • The Mark Restaurant has been providing a bespoke menu curated by JGV. A selection of the restaurant’s most popular breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes are now available from 11 am to 10 pm for all to enjoy. For more information, call 212-606-3161. QUICK BITES By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman

I began learning to cook at the ripe old age of five. My Mother was a foodie. She helped to found one of the single most important and celebrated food organizations in the world, the James Beard Foundation. It is because of this that I have spent virtually my entire life surrounded by some of the most renowned chefs in history. So of course I find cooking and entertaining cathartic. But I also love the science behind cooking… blending flavor profiles and coming up with fun and unique recipes. This one is a personal favorite. They are so easy to make and are full of flavor. I designed the recipe to be simple so that anyone could make these, especially as they don’t require a lot of time and allows you to entertain your guests.

SWEET & SPICY SLIDERS INGREDIENTS: 2 pounds Ground Meat (beef, Bison, Turkey) Salt And Pepper 4 Tablespoons Butter 1 whole Large Vidalia Onion, Diced 1/2 cup Bourbon, Aged or Spiced Rum 1 cup Barbecue Sauce 1/4 cup Fresh Jalapeno Slices 12 whole Slider Buns PREPARATION: Form the meat into 12 (or so) miniature patties and salt and pepper them on both sides. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties until just about done in the middle, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. Drain off all but 2 tablespoons of grease, then return the skillet to the stove. Throw the diced onions in the skillet and stir to cook, about 3 minutes. Pour in Boubon/Rum (be careful if you’re cooking over an open flame; turn it off momentarily to be extra careful) and stir. Allow the alcohol to reduce by half, about 2 to 3 minutes, then stir in jalapenos and the barbecue sauce. Reduce the heat to low and place the patties in the barbecue sauce, turning to coat. Allow the patties to simmer in the sauce until everything’s hot and bubbly. Place the patties on individual buns and be sure to spoon extra sauce (with the jalapenos!) over the top of each one before topping with the other half of the bun. As an added tip, I have found that if you purchase a base coleslaw from your local grocery store, and add a little honey and Dijon mustard, it helps to bring down the level of heat if you have guests that don’t like spicy foods. •

BORDEAUX WINES

QUINTESSENTIAL SIPS FROM SOUTHERN FRANCE By Jenny Peters

s summer arrives, it’s hard not to dream of a visit to Bordeaux, that ancient city and beautiful wine region of Southern France, where famed vintages have been created since Roman times. A visit to the vineyards would be pleasant, but we’ll settle for sips here at home for now. The wines of Bordeaux are graded in the French system that began in the 1400s, the “Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée” or AOC designation, which protects and brands foods and wines to a specific place in the country. Bordeaux has a dizzying 60 AOC designation (the most of any wine region in France), with Graves, Médoc (and its famed subappellations of Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Estéphe, and Saint-Julien), Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, and Sauternes the most famous. Since we’re all staying in town these days, the wines we’re suggesting are all available either in New York metro area shops or via shipping. Quaffing during this time can mean opening your first bottle at lunchtime and rolling straight into dinner; for those days, perhaps a lessexpensive bottle of Bordeaux wine fits the bill. But let’s start with one of the very best to celebrate any special occasion. 56 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

Chateau Lafite Rothschild Castle

CLASSICS

Sample the top of the Bordeaux heap with a bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, that famed first-growth winery (one of five so designated as premier cru classé). That one is a true classic, a legendary Bordeaux blend red wine and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Cellared in barrels for 20 months, their silky-smooth wine sleeps, then emerges as one of the world’s best red wines. Get your hands on a bottle of the 1996 vintage, and you’re in for the treat of a lifetime. Other great Lafite vintages are 2018 and 2017, so those are more likely to be found near home; expect to pay at least $500 a bottle, however. The other first-growth Bordeaux chateaus are Latour, Haut-Brion, Petrus, and Mouton Rothschild (neighbor to Lafite Rothschild and connected via family). In a pinch for a quarantined special celebration, these will also make you feel like it truly is a unique day in amongst those that may seem repetitively the same. They are equally expensive, too—and world-class as well.

REASONABLE

Legende family

For more every day (and still unique) pairings with a delicious homecooked or ordered-out meal, there are many Bordeaux wines with a more reasonable price tag, making drinking French wine approachable for most belt-tightened budgets. Legende wines are a perfect example of eminently drinkable Bordeaux wines at an approachable price. Winemaker Diane Flamand oversees the vineyards located in Pauillac, Medoc, and Entre-Deux-Mers regions of Bordeaux, managing the grapes that go into the five balanced Legende wines she creates. Each one—the Bordeaux R Rouge, Bordeaux R Blanc, R Medoc, R Saint-Emilion, and R Pauillac—are all fresh and elegant choices that range from $15 to $30 per bottle. Pick your favorite, white or red, each one a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon or Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Then close your eyes and imagine looking out over the Garonne River’s gorgeous vineyards as you sip. If your w ine budget is st i l l robust , cons ider t he Bl as on d e L’Evangile from Pomerol, a heady blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc that pairs perfectly (after spending 15 months in oak barrels) with that seared steak you’ve cooked up on your own. It’s a pricier choice at $75 per bottle, but when this fruit-forward, soft tannin big red is paired with dinner at home, it sure helps make a Saturday night celebration of living seem to be just this side of nirvana.

SWEET

When it’s time for dessert wine (hey, no one is driving anywhere, right?), then it is time to taste a Sauternes, Bordeaux’s most exceptional sweet wine, from Chateau Rieussec. That Premier Grand Cru estate was first planted in the 1700s; these days, it’s a gorgeous, ivy-laden chateau making some of the world’s best wine. As you sip this golden quaff blended with Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc that spends nearly 26 months in oak barrels, you will understand why it has been a classic dessert wine choice for more than 150 years. And when our stay-at-home drinking and eating has ended, consider a trip to Bordeaux to see and taste the wine where it was created. Remember, Bordeaux has existed for over 2000 years. Some 2,718 acres of the city itself was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. This urban space celebrates 18th- and 19th-century architecture with its ancient churches, buildings, and Roman ruins found here. And the wine-filled farmlands outside the city? Well, those need an in-person visit to drink in the beauty, so we’ll meet you there soon to share a glass. •

ON STAGE

LISTENING IN THE DARK By Lori Zelenko

ith Broadway dark, we thought we would re-live some of our favorite recent shows. What better way than binge-listening to the cast albums? So, until the lights shine once again, enjoy these cast albums of hits that barely opened in NYC from this past season. Just for good measure, we have added in the ultimate Broadway fix, Hamilton, a must-have this July when patriotic spirit runs high. So, pump up the volume! And get ready to dance if not in the aisles then at least in your living room. AMERICAN UTOPIA

You may ask yourself, “How did I get here?” to quote a line from the Talking Heads “Once In A Lifetime” hit tune, as you find yourself dancing to “Burning Down The House”. Bet you will find yourself compelled to get on your feet—dance, scream, shout, and yes, maybe even applaud—the moment the first number in David Byrne’s American Utopia ends. At once bringing back and updating the avant-garde music scene of CBGBs and the Mudd Club, the album mixes the familiar—hits from David Byrne’s band, The Talking Heads—with music created just for the Broadway show.

PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF Teenagers in the house? Then this cast album is a necessity. The action-packed story revolves around Percy Jackson, who has newly discovered powers he cannot control. Big dilemma! Plus, there are monsters on his trail, and he is on a quest to find Zeus’s lightning bolt, not to mention prevent a war between the Greek gods. Big plan for anyone, much less a teen. But normal is a myth when you are a demigod. Based on the bestselling Disney-Hyperion novel by Rick Riordan, this thrilling original rock score will engage parents and teens alike. There are superpowers inside all of us, here’s a score to unleash them!

SING STREET

Celebrating the thrill of first love and the power of music, Sing Street embraces the new wave sounds of the 80s. Set in Dublin, Ireland, in 1982, when unemployment is raging, and thousands seek bluer skies across the Irish Sea, the show brings us sixteen-year-old Conor and his schoolmates as they turn to music to escape troubles at home and impress a mysterious girl. The critically acclaimed score is recognized as one of the most compulsively listenable cast recordings in recent memory. It is not all ‘80s-rock style catchy up-tunes; the authentic and affecting cast album has beautiful ballads.

TINA: THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL

In a word: Electrifying! Tina’s sass, unbelievable energy, tough girl/ tender heart attitude, and vulnerability are belied by a powerhouse voice and a will to survive. Listening to Adrienne Warren, who embodies this adored superstar on Broadway and in the London recording of this bio-musical, you just can’t get enough of her renditions of Tina’s hits: “River Deep, Mountain High,” “Let’s Stay Together,” “Proud Mary,” “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” and of course, the mega chart-topper “What’s Love Got To Do With It” – among 20 other unforgettable Tina Turner tunes. Pick a hit, listen even casually, guarantee you will be hooked. 58 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

HAMILTON AN AMERICAN MUSICAL

Combining hip hop with Broadway t r a d it i on , L i n - Ma nu e l M i r a n d a’s groundbreaking, record-smashing musical about Alexander Hamilton, one of our country’s previously unsung Founding Fathers, is a candid look at his success stories and personal tragedies too. No matter if you are a fan of Shakespeare or an aficionado of musicals such as South Pacific and Camelot, the relevancy here uncovers the foundation of American History lessons applicable to us today. If this album is not in your collection, the time to add it is now!

MOULIN ROUGE

Name a fave tune, one that’s catchy and pop or maybe a ballad or two; it stands to odds that your choice is on the soundtrack of hit movie turned Broadway show, Moulin Rouge. The story, primarily of star-crossed lovers, speaks to love. And music…50 years of hits, from “Shake It Up” (initially popularized by Florence and the Machine) and “Lady Marmalade,” a super-standard for Patti LaBelle to “Diamonds are Forever” with cinematic echoes of Dame Shirley Bassey. Not every song is as famous as the Rolling Stones “Sympathy for the Devil,” there are a vast number of top 40 love songs never out of style, as well as new music written specifically for this production. And mashups making all unexpectedly fun.

SIX

Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, SIX reimagines the lives of the wives of Henry VIII as a modern girl band pondering their fates as if they had pursued their own lives and had not married him. The wives of Henry VIII—all six of them— come alive in the cast album, reclaiming their identities from their infamous spouse’s shadow. Five hundred years of historical heartbreak are re-mixed into an exuberant celebration of 21st-century girl power. The female cast is backed by an all-female band, the “Ladies in Waiting.”

COMPANY

Phone rings, Door chimes. In comes Company! The quintessential musical comedy about the search for love and cocktails in the Big Apple is turned on its head as musical theater’s most iconic bachelor becomes a bachelorette. At Bobbie’s (played by Tony Award-winner Katrina Lenk) 35th birthday party, all her friends are wondering why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right man? And, why can’t she settle down and have a family? This whip-smart musical, given a game-changing makeover for a modern-day Manhattan, features some of Sondheim’s best-loved songs, including “Company,” “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “Side by Side,” and the iconic “Being Alive.” The Broadway cast album is not out yet, but the 2018 London cast recording is terrific in the meantime. • JULY/AUGUST 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 59

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER XAVIER CRUZ, BARBA MEN’S GROOMING BOUTIQUE By Ann Grenier

or years boutiques and barbershops have coexisted, separate entities serving different clients. Until now. Barba Men’s Grooming Boutique has united these two unique services in a single place, offering high-end salon services and more modestly priced traditional barbering under a single roof—all led by Xavier Cruz. With over 30 years in the industry, it is no secret Cruz has established himself as one of the best in the business. New York Lifestyles magazine sat down with Cruz to discuss his career, his upscale Barba Men’s Grooming Boutique and the all new Quarancuts Virtual Hair School. What inspired you to become a hairstylist/barber? Oh, I loved doing hair ever since I can remember. I started cutting my own hair when I was 10 years old. When my parents would send me down the street to get a cut, I always hated it as the barber would give me the same cut as everyone else. There was never a moment when I felt I stood out so, I started doing it myself. I began getting compliments. That is when I thought maybe I can start doing others! I cut my sisters hair and cousin. One day, my mother asked if I would apply her hair color. It all came so naturally to me. It wasn’t until I was 17 when I decided to make it a career. Who has influenced your personal style? It was my mentor who played a huge part in the way I style hair. He was so effortless in the way he worked. It never seemed forced and his clientele were always happy. I wanted to be like him, so I watched him and mimicked his techniques to eventually come up with my own style. Then, of course, there is George Michael. As a teenager, people often mistook me for the iconic singer. Once I was invited to a big party in Harlem in 1988. George was at the top of his career. As we were leaving the party, there were a few limo’s outside this gorgeous brownstone. Of course, the limo’s drew attention to the locals, so much so that someone yelled out, There’s George Michael pointing to me. I went along with it and waved to the crowed and my friend. The chauffeur opened the car door and greeted me as Mr. Michael and prompted me to get into the vehicle. Yes, George Michael had a big part in my look and style back in the day. Today, I am on my own. I don’t think the long, highlighted hair suits me now. 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

Tell us what is offered at Barba. We offer traditional haircuts along with hot towel shaves. Hair and beard coloring. Highlights, straighteners, Keratin, and scalp micro-pigmentation. We also feature spa services including facials, micro-dermabrasion, peels, waxing, body scrubs, and microblading. What do you enjoy most about owning a salon? I love catering to my clients. Making them feel welcomed. Offering products, services. and an environment they could not get just anywhere. I really enjoy setting the stage for an unforgettable day by motivating my staff to serve specialty cocktails to a client. What was your most amazing career moment? I have had a few over the past decades but I think the one that stands out the most is working with Eminem during the MTV Video Music Awards. For his opening of the show, I was asked to create 50 lookalikes for his “Real Slim Shady” song. I was invited to use the dressing room for the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. Both Janet Jackson and Sting stopped by to say hello as they were there rehearsing for the show. That was exciting.

On becoming a stylist: “One day, my mother asked if I would apply her hair color. It all came so naturally to me. It wasn’t until I was 17 when I decided to make it a career.” What inspired you to create the “Quarantine Haircuts? Terri and Sandy—advertising execs who helped launch Quarancuts— and I came up with the idea of a way of keeping people connected during quarantine. Everyone needs some sort of grooming tips, and when your stylist is on lockdown, what other ways are there but through a Zoom lesson? To see those smiling faces before and after is priceless. Giving back to those who have supported me all these years is my inspiration. DIY haircuts were up more than 400 percent by the end of March. By doing this, we wanted to bring a sense of calmness and sense of control to life. Who is the one person you would love to see walk into Barba and sit in your chair? Madonna for sure. For a million reasons. First, I love her. Second, her cut and color for the last few years needs improvement. I would give her the best makeover ever. As for a guy, it would be George Clooney. It is time he did a little gray blending. Now to downtime: With New York opening, and restaurants once again serving up favorite specialties, tell us where you will be making reservations? OMG, there are so many favorites. But here’s what is on the top of my list: Italian—Rafele Ristorante in the West Village. Mexican—Cascalote in Spanish Harlem. French—Mountain Bird in Spanish Harlem. All-American—Elmo in Chelsea. Eastern European—Verōnika in Flatiron. SUMMER HAPPENINGS BACK TO THE FUTURE By Bailey Beckett

o Hofmeyer is an ardent moviegoer. Every Saturday, she and a small gaggle of seniors go to the new luxury CMX Theater on the eastside to see the latest release. With its plush leather recliners, pillows, and tableside service—pan-seared Scottish salmon, anyone—it’s a weekly tradition the group enjoys immensely. But then came social distancing, shelter-at-home, and Netflix. What’s a girl to do? “I don’t usually drive, but I heard of a drive-in-theater in Astoria and thought that would be different,” Hofmeyer, 64, said. “I took my Audi out of the garage, picked everyone up.” That would be Carol, 64; JoAnn, 68; and Barbara, 66 who crossed the bridge to Astoria and the Bel-Aire Diner. The long-time establishment had used their parking lot as the make-shift movie theater, erecting a 25-foot screen that could be seen by as many as 40 cars. The diner even uses an FM frequency to broadcast the sound and offered its full menu with favorites like burgers, sandwiches, and even Condon Bleu (chicken breast rolled with ham and Swiss cheese, topped with a mushroom cream sauce and served over rice).

RAVE REVIEWS

The four women watched a screening of Grease. Thankfully, they did not emulate the dance moves. “Are you kidding me?” joked Hofmeyer. “With my arthritis?” It didn’t damper the mood, however. “It was fabulous,” the senior said. She wasn’t the only one with raves. “It’s been amazing,” said Kal Dellaportas, whose family owns the diner. “People are reaching out, asking how they can get involved.” The diner, only doing take-out orders and delivery until NYC’s Phase 2 opening begins, was so happy they staged another screening of classic Dirty Dancing the following Wednesday (nobody puts Baby in a corner, but maybe a parking lot). The diner, inspired to “bring the community together safely,” said event coordinator, Victoria Philios, contracted with Long Island Movie Nights to pull the event off, using their screen, projector, and sound system. “I think it’s great,” said media gadfly Rob Shuter, an omnipresent pop culture commentator who appears on Fox 5, CNN, and iHeart Radio “Plus, if the movie isn’t great you drive off. I’m just grateful they aren’t showing Fast and the Furious!” he joked. Yankee Stadium

Bel-Aire Diner

EVEN MORE DRIVE-INS

The Bel-Aire Diner isn’t the only establishment joining the trend. With no Major League Baseball scheduled as yet, Yankee Stadium is working with the MASC Hospitality Group to begin hosting drive-in movies for up to 200 cars this month, starting with Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and evolving to family-style brunches during the weekend. “Anticipating the reopening process in NYC, we’ve been working on the idea of an Uptown Drive-In Experience since late March,” the company said. “We have created a social distancing playground to serve as the first step to normalization and made it right here in our beloved Bronx. New Yorkers need more. They deserve more.” In addition to films, MASC and the stadium will also begin trivia nights, karaoke singing contests, coming shows, dance showcases, and food from local vendors. A little further from the five boroughs near the New Jersey border, the Warwick Drive-In, established in 1977, used its three screens to host 300 cars to show movies like Trolls World Tour, Bad Boys for Life and Jumanji: The Next Level, despite 45 minutes of rain that hampered screening for a few minutes. Before the pandemic, the theater was used to 530 cars, but even wheels aren’t immune to social distancing. The drive-in gave each car 18-foot space and filled capacity to a bit more than half. It’s a trend that will likely continue until New York life reaches some semblance of normal, but somethings won’t change. “Do they have reserved parking on the fancy upper east side?” asked Shuter, with a laugh. “And you know certain New Yorkers are going to show up with their drivers!” •

A NEW YORK RANT CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?!?!?! By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman

have been so depressed lately. No, fear not Gothamites, I am not suicidal (though if you are, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 to get some help). You can look forward to my acerbic column to continue for many years. I am depressed because as we approach our great nation’s 244th birthday, we have become more divided than ever…especially in New York. I blame politics, special interest groups and social media. Flat out. When I was growing up, Ronald Reagan was our President. And before you start, NO this is not a political statement or column. President Reagan always believed that no matter our differences, we are all Americans and that any argument or negotiation should start from that common thread. Where is that logic now? Everyone is suffering from political and societal exhaustion. Forget COVID-19…this issue is going to end up killing us a lot faster. Between the Democrats and the Republicans, both sides are so blinded by their own ideology that they refuse to compromise. Perhaps if someone, ANYONE, came to the table and used President Reagan’s philosophy as a starting point, we could begin to close the divide that this country has suffered for over 15 years. Maybe it is time for everyone to just take a step back and remind ourselves that we are all human. We all make mistakes (yours truly very much included in this sentiment). We all blindly follow our heroes and the public personas we love. And there is nothing wrong with that. But with everything that we are all enduring right now, isn’t it time for all men and women to set aside those mistakes, those passion points, differences, and remember that we are all Americans? In our case, we are all New Yorkers. We need to remember the lessons that history has tried to teach us… as an example, let’s get back to the comradery and love we all felt for each other post 9/11. It should not take a terrorist attack,

global pandemic or other time of strife and uncertainty to bring us together. Just the reality that we all live in the greatest city, in the greatest country, on Earth. That should be a good starting point. Yes, my fellow Gothamites, I am preaching unity. Enough with the lines in the sand. Enough with the great racial, gender and societal divide. All it is doing is padding the pockets of would-be politicians so that they can get re-elected. Isn’t it time we say “ENOUGH”?!?!? We need to remember that there is a reason why New York has always been considered the “Great Melting Pot” of our world. It is the one place on this planet where we have every nationality, every point of view and every religion. Rather than focusing on the differences, let’s take the spirit of President Reagan’s advice and start from “we are all New Yorkers” and come back together to restore our metropolis to its former glory. As a third generation New Yorker, I will be the first to set aside ANY differences to begin bringing people back together…that is how you unite the races and genders. Through peace. Not through rioting, looting and political meandering. The next time you have a negative thought about your neighbor, that person working at Duane Reade or the person delivering your food, remember that they are just like you and I…they live in the greatest city on Earth. And THAT is how you begin to heal a fractured populous. Only together can we achieve greatness. Can’t we all just get along please?!?!?! •

TIME OUT WITH… ED MICHAEL REGGIE By Bailey Beckett

d Michael Reggie is the epitome of the modern-day entrepreneur. The New York resident has started, invested in, and sold start-ups companies through his company Future Factory for years, which he began after a highly respected career in healthcare. Having taught entrepreneurship at Tulane University in his native Louisiana, he knows better than most an opportunity when he sees one.

But he could not have expected the funeral business would provide his biggest challenge and opportunity yet. After hearing from colleagues and co-workers about the difficulties of planning services, and understanding prices, his curiosity was piqued. He began months of research into this often-insular industry, and he found that little transparency, secretive pricing, and lack of information for consumers inspired his newest venture: Funeralocity, the Internet’s only free price comparison website. The site launched last year to great fanfare and has steadily become the go-to platform for anyone searching for a funeral home. Tell us more about Funeralocity. We are a free comparison website that lists prices, locations, and contact information for nearly every funeral home and crematory in the U.S. Ninety-one percent of funeral homes do not list their prices. With our platform, you can find the most up-to-date costs for nearly every business. So, whether you are planning your funeral or for a family member, you now have a resource that can provide you all the information you need with a simple search. Why is this needed? Planning a funeral is something you will do once or maybe twice in your lifetime. It is not an everyday event. And so, people are naturally inexperienced in this regard. Often, they live far away from their loved ones. Funeralocity is a website that makes this process easier. You can search funeral homes in any geographic area, compare prices, and find the appropriate contacts from the privacy of your own home, no matter where you live. What have been the challenges in this marketplace? It is a fragmented industry with most funeral homes and cremation providers very much rooted in their communities. Funeralocity is a one-stop destination that can connect users to thousands of funeral homes across the country. What has been the reception of Funeralocity since your launch last year? The response has been beyond our expectations. We have many thousands of visitors come to our website and received news coverage across the country. Especially important to me has been the support we have received from hospice professionals working in the field. We are heartened that the public has found Funeralocity an honest and transparent resource when planning a service. All our information is independently collected and vetted, and people appreciate that because there is no other site that offers this vital information.

Funeralocity is a onestop destination that can connect users to thousands of funeral homes across the country. 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2020

How has the Coronavirus affected your business? It has put us right at the center of it here in New York City. We have been assisting grieving families looking to make last arrangements when they could not find a funeral home. We have staffed our helplines with licensed funeral directors to help these families make plans under challenging conditions. It is a scenario that has never been seen before. The need for services was considerably heightened, and some homes could not handle the demand. Additionally, stay-at-home restrictions made having in-person services challenging, so virtual funerals became an option that homes began offering. That is why our staff helplines proved helpful: we were able to find homes for callers that could handle their needs, including religious/ cultural/ spiritual considerations, which are always essential factors in planning services. Our traffic from the New York area increased over 100 percent, and one of the things we are watching is the pricing of funeral homes in the region. By our analytics, it appears that prices increased during this crisis. What are the misconceptions about funeral planning? Statistics show that most consumers call only one funeral provider in their time of need. People do not often realize the vast price differences between funeral and cremation providers. As with every other purchase, it is essential to shop around. A funeral is typically the fifth most costly expenditure in one’s life.
