LIVING FOR TODAY

ately, I’ve been thinking about how many of us spend our present lives stuck in the future. That’s right, the tomorrow. How many times have you caught yourself saying, “When I make this much money, I’ll finally be able to do x, y, or z.”? Or perhaps “When my kids get older, I’ll get a hobby.” And the list goes on. Of course, I’ve certainly done that kind of thinking in my own life. But I’ve been reminded after living through a pandemic; it’s that our present is all we have. We only have today. The question should be, “What am I doing right now?” For me, it’s feeling alive—and I’m grateful for it. I celebrate it. And, although I’ve not always felt this way, I’m thankful for it. Are you feeling alive today? If not, ask yourself what’s keeping you from feeling that way. Ask yourself, “What inspires me? What motivates me? What gives me hope today?” I also encourage you to listen to your inner voice. The one that recognizes your goodness, strength, compassion, courage, intelligence, and your right to feel alive. Be patient. It’s there. Soon you’ll wake each day filled with a new awakening to express love and gratitude to yourself and an appreciation to others in your life. Go ahead; it’s a perfect time as we celebrate Mother’s Day. Why not call her today and tell her how much you love her? This month, we gathered our editorial team to bring you another special issue of thought-provoking articles from inspiring art topics to outdoor adventures that will leave you wanting more. All this and our cover feature on Leesa Rowland who reveals in her just-released book why it’s important to create charisma in life. Remember: Don’t wait for tomorrow. Get down to living your life today. See you next issue...

THE AUTHOR

Leesa, author of the best-selling self-help/ motivational book Discovering the It Factor within You: Developing Your Charismatic Personality, has just released the sequel. The Charisma Factor: Unlock the Secrets of Magnetic Charm and Personal Influence in Your Life (Hatherleigh Press) and it is now available nationwide and electronically. In Charisma Factor, Rowland reveals the unseen but powerful force that has many different facets. Charisma is a remarkable and compelling spark that makes you unique and sets you apart from the rest of the crowd, and it is something all people possess— whether they are aware of it or not. Devoting a little time to connecting with our inner selves, learning what makes us truly special, and incorporating this magnetic quality into our personality can have untold benefits on our lives. The Charisma Factor is the ultimate handbook that unlocks the mysterious formula for charm and influence.

THE ANIMAL ADVOCATE

Beyond her creative credits as an author, Leesa is also well-known for her work as a philanthropist and animal rights activist. A vegan who is dedicated to healthy eating, she has been active with the national non-profit organization Last Chance for Animals since 1989. In 2013, Leesa founded the non-profit group Animal Ashram. She loves uniting animals with people and raising awareness of the cruelty animals endure. Leesa explained to us that The New York City Animal Care and Control take over 30,000 animals across all five boroughs annually. “The ACC is a kill shelter and euthanizes on average 20 percent of animals per year. It breaks my heart. So, because of this, I launched Animal Ashram to help rescue the dogs and cats off the kill list,” she said. “We work through the night trying to network and rescue as many as we can. “We are also anti-vivisection and advocate against the cruelty of factory farms, the horrors of the fur industry, and promote veganism.” Leesa’s love for animals doesn’t stop there. Her animal advocacy is also seen in the much-needed funding to help with veterinarian care and placement. As she says, “It’s very rewarding!”

“I have had so many more experiences since writing my last book and have so much more knowledge to share that I felt obligated to write this book. I have always thought of charisma as a much-underrated quality,” Leesa told us. “Sadly, we are not taught how to develop charisma in ourselves and the importance of it. I want to help others to be the best they can be, communicate, and become more charismatic and inspired as they journey through life.” Charisma Factor is for ever yone and packed with valuable lessons and Leesa’s tips to embrace your individuality, discover your authenticity, and empower yourself.

Her animal advocacy is also seen in the much-needed funding to help with veterinarian care and placement…

LEESA OFF THE CUFF Tell us something people do not know about you. I experienced the most magnificent full-blown Kundalini awakening just about a year ago, and I have not been the same since. I’m still learning how to work with all the changes, powerful energy, and new awareness that it has brought. I see lights and energies that were never noticeable to me before and have had many clairvoyant experiences. I have practiced yoga for many years, and hands down, this was the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me! I had no idea our bodies were capable of all that. I have never felt closer to God. What is the best international dining experience you have had? While visiting Italy’s Amalfi Coast, my partner and I stayed at the lovely luxury resort Monastero Santa Rosa which was once a renovated 17th-century monastery. Every evening when we dined in their Ristorante Il Refettorio, the Michelin starred chef would come to our table to discuss our dietary needs and culinary expectations. I’m vegan, and my partner is a pescatarian. We were continually amazed at the incomparable creativity and rich, authentic flavors that made for a unique and memorable culinary experience. Your favorite vacation spot and hotel? My favorite go-to vacation spot, without a doubt, is Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos in Mexico. The Rosewood resort is nestled on the Sea of Cortez. It has a mesmerizing beach, exclusive activities and celebrations, infinity pools, personal butlers, fabulous spa, gym, speakeasy, and several restaurants on-site that cater to your every whim and taste. They are even pet-friendly! Lastly, where will we find Leesa Rowland in five years? You will always find me speaking up for and helping animals and children in need. I am in the process of restructuring my non-profit to include programs for children as well. In 5 years, I hope to have a beautiful permanent facility.

Leesa studied broadcast journalism and later became a classically trained actress at the worldrenowned Stella Adler Studio…

THE ACTRESS

The daughter of an artist and college professor, Leesa grew up in Austin, Texas, where she studied broadcast journalism and later became a classically trained actress at the world-renowned Stella Adler Studio in Los Angeles. Shortly after graduation, she quickly gained a following, being cast as Victoria in Troma Entertainment’s cult film classic Class of Nuke’ Em High Parts 2 and 3 and appearing in the sequel Return To Nuke’ Em High, which aired on the Starz network. She enjoyed playing this role of Victoria and considered this her most memorable. “Because it has had so many sequels, I have made appearances as the same character over the years.” In 1994, she acted in USA Network’s series Troma’s Edge with Lloyd Kaufman and Debbie Rochon. In 2012, she co-starred in Travis Campbell’s Slaughter Daughter as Phyllis Adjani, an eccentric mother who drives her daughter to insanity. The film won Best Feature at Orlando’s 7th Annual Freak Show Film Festival that same year. It also led to a co-starring role in the critically acclaimed web series Two City Girls and appearances on the Oxygen reality series Jersey Couture in 2012. But whether your mom fancies orchids, tulips, roses, or (my favorites) lilies, why not add to her special day with presents rare and unexpected. And as you check out my hand-picked array below, keep in mind there’s no harm in starting the celebration a few days early on Cinco de Mayo with, say, one or two muy bueno options! ONE SMART COOKIE MAXIMUM IMPACT This might be the year to skip the customary box of mom candy in favor of a Color My Cookie decorating kit. The regular size kits—there are also mini-kits—come with six cookies, an edible paint palette, paint brushes, icing, sprinkles, and a link to a tutorial. Not only is turning ingeniously shaped cookies into works of art fun (in my case, also a tad outside the lines), there’s the delectable grand finale. And should your Mother’s Day be a virtual one, consider sending kits to the whole family for a cookie Zoom-a-palooza. Info: colormycookie.com.

FACE FORWARD Guilty pleasure disclosure: Watching Internet divas deftly apply makeup with chichi tools. (FYI, these women aren’t experts but rather fledgling influencers, young moms, and budding raconteurs. My 20-Piece Expert LUXIE Artist Kit—a killer professional brush collection tucked into an ingenious belt bag—is way better as the brushes are a) Earth/creature-friendly vegan; b) exceptionally supple and soft, and c) designed with insights from industry pros and celebs like Christian Serratos and Khloe Kardashian. Love, love, love! Info: luxiebeauty.com.

Striking, effortless, upscale, contemporary: the hallmarks of Walters Faith jewelry and most certainly the celebrated brand’s recent collaboration with noted interior designer Cara Woodhouse. Melding Woodhouse’s passion for marble and precious stones with Walters Faith’s timeless aesthetic created The Cara Woodhouse x Walters Faith. The four-piece collection includes an engravable charm, bold ring, diamond charm enhancer, and to-die-for marble statement pendant. A 5-star way to spoil mom. Info: waltersfaith.com.

GROUND CONTROL TO MOTHER EARTH Having spent much of my adult life seeking comfortable casual shoes that aren’t sneakers—which isn’t to say sneakers don’t have their place in my heart—I have narrowed my search to weekend-in-thecountry-brunch-in-the-city footwear. Found. Raum Goods Slip-On Earthing Shoes rate an A+ for chic and buttery leather comfort. With a bit of a moccasin gestalt, they are ethically sourced and come in myriad colors. And while mom will love any color you pick, my vote goes out to “Tumeric” and “Scarlet.” Info: raumgoods.com.

ALL TRESSED UP

A NEW WAY TO GLOW

Ever since my allergist pulled the plug on all things synthetic, I’ve become fixated on natural fabrics. My latest obsession? CILQUE® (pronounced “silk”) luxury pillowcases and accessories made of 100 percent mulberry silk charmeuse. One of their newer items, the Top Knot Headband, goes beyond pushing bangs and stray strands off the forehead for cleansing and makeup application. It’s a go-to savior for everything from a.m. video chats to dinner dates. And the color palette includes such stunning hues as Amethyst and Emerald. Info: cilque.com.

It sounds impossible, yet the benefits surrounding the coveted Canopy Humidifier keep multiplying. As much a dry skin solution that hydrates while you sleep as it is a godsend for allergy sufferers, the Canopy consistently rates accolades for its anti-mold technology and invisible mist (bonus raves from houseplants!). Newly introduced for use in the unit’s diffuser: Aroma Kits with three curated fragrances (subscriptions available). Talk about home, sweet home! Info: getcanopy.co.

Envant Active has a distinct advantage over the adage “When you look good, you feel good,” seeing that their performance wear pieces feel as good as they look, thanks to Enavance™, the company’s trademark fabric. Created for “the modern woman who is always on the go,”—their designs are 100 percent fashionista-forward with items like their single shoulder Palm Bra Top and The Leila Set—an off-the-shoulder top and high-waist pants that read sophisticated casual squared. Info: enavantactive.com.

When it comes to bath towels, my husband is a study in persnickety. Absorption is a big deal, as is softness, and he believes the heavier the towel, the better. I, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about heft. I want a towel that recreates a posh spa day at home. I want Tombo Towels, and since he’s tried these lightweight, quick-drying towels, he’s a convert. Woven on vintage shuttle looms in Osaka, Japan from 100 organic cotton, only 20 are produced per day. To Mom: A rare and luxurious postbath wrap. Info: tombotowel.com.

Subscription boxes, Savvy or iffy? Depends. So, what about one filled with things that fragrantly diffuse stress during work hours and downtime? Should mom be even mildly candle-obsessed, I urge you to think Vellabox. Not just subscription-centric, Vellabox’s product line offers candles and accessories for individual purchase. Flickering even as I type is a scent called “Empathy,” but on my wish list are “Five o’clock Shadow” and “But First, Mimosas.” Info: vellabox.com.

REVISE & AUGMENT

GIFT IN HAAND

BEYOND THE PALE

Aside from using lipstick as an emergency blush, I’ve never really dabbled in twoin-one beauty products until I made the acquaintance of Flowerdose Lip & Eye Serum by True + Luscious. Infused with botanicals and hyaluronic acid), this powerhouse pen goes the distance in keeping fine lines in line and smoothing even chronically dry lips. Dividends include the lessening of under-eye baggage and as a primer for both eye shadow and lip color. Info: trueluscious.com.

When it comes to Mother’s Day bouquets, the best come in small, hand-picked bunches, presented with pride by tiny family members with an eye for wildflowers or stealthily plucked garden blooms. Short stems are key, which means a suitably sized vase—say 5 inches tall? My delightful discovery: Haand’s Cloudware Skinny Vase with its sweep of clouds against a skyblue background. Made by hand (no two are alike), these porcelain pieces are so charming you might want to consider several for a vase shelf display. Info: Haand.us

In the aftermath of an art class disaster involving a paint-filled airbrush, I’ve shied from the temptation to test-drive one of the original Luminess systems. So, I’m intensely pleased to announce the launch of the Luminess Breeze Airbrush System, a handheld, wireless, stylus-free airbrush with a precision trigger that delivers a “micro-fine layer of cosmetics” (aka the new Rose-4-in-1 foundation) for a polished look and the endorphin high that comes with transcendent skin. A mishap-free application was merely a perk. Info: luminesscosmetics.com.

WOVEN THROUGH TIME

HOLY GUACAMOLE!

Within Columbia’s indigenous Zenú community are a group of artisans celebrated for their skill at weaving locally sourced fibers, known as caña fleche, into hats, ornaments, and accessories. And while their signature black and white sombreros vueltiao is most famous, they probably aren’t as enticing a choice for mom as Etnikarte’s Triangle and Round Woven Bags. The material used to create these exquisite pieces is handdyed, adding a vibrant intensity to their singular designs and construction. Info: giftmechic.com.

Decades ago, I recall how impressed my mother was when a waiter at a Mexican restaurant began grinding guacamole ingredients with a rough-hewn mortar and pestle. We later learned the utensil is a molcajete and a fixture in Mexican kitchens. Crafted from pure volcanic stone, molcajetes are prized for bringing out the flavor in various spices, sauces, and oils. As Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day share calendar space, let’s ramp up the festivities in true culinary style with Verve Culture’s Molcajete with Tortilla Basket! Info: verveculture.com.

MEMO FROM MARGARITAVILLE

24 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Cinco de Mayo is all about chilling— laid-back parties with friends and family, Mexican cuisine, mariachi music, and copious toasts of margaritas--traditional or frozen. Mixing it up (literally), I’ve been testing out IZO Mezcal’s take on the beloved cocktail. Using the same essential ingredients as the Tequila version, MargarIZO boasts an irresistible take on the classic that won me over with its smooth, smoky sophistication. But, if you’re a purist, IZO’s Tequila is excepcional! Info: izospirits.com. •

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME PERMANENT MAKEUP FOR EXPRESSIVE EYES By Patricia Canole

ver the past few years or so, microblading has become the Number 1 solution for beefing up overplucked, sparse, or nonexistent brows. To get technical, a makeup artist proceeds to make small hair-like incisions in the skin, and the pigment is deposited into each one. Because the ink doesn’t go as deeply into the skin as body art, microblading will fade over time. We met with premier permanent makeup artist, Delphine Breyne of Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa, New York. The French-born artist is passionate about beauty. Her years of experience in the fashion/beauty industries undoubtedly shaped her future career. “I have always been interested in beautiful eyebrows and started with myself. I researched many different methods to achieve beautiful, natural-looking eyebrows.” Delphine soon realized permanent makeup, otherwise known as microblading, presented the ideal solution. “ After I had my eyebrows done successfully, I fell in love with the techniques and results of permanent makeup, and so I decided to learn from some of the best around the world. I call this Eyebrow Couture, offering the client an individualized natural look. What exactly is permanent makeup, and why is it so important now in the pandemic-masked age? Permanent Makeup (PMU) is a term that can also mean semi-permanent makeup, cosmetic tattooing, or micro-pigmentation. It is a technique that improves the appearance of a particular feature with a natural look, when done correctly, with the help of a super-fine pen that deposits pigment into the skin. Today, more than ever, microblading is essential because we are all wearing masks that show only our eyes and eyebrows, which frame our faces and accentuate the eyebrow hair.

Is permanent makeup like tattooing? Technically speaking, PMU is considered a form of tattoo because artists are dropping pigment under a client’s skin. However, one of the critical differences is that PMU is performed in a lighter way on the surface, under the first layer versus the traditional, more profound tattoo artist’s techniques. The PMU result is a natural, softer result which needs to be refreshed every year on average. Tell us about the benefits to microblading. The microblade strokes I create look identical to natural eyebrow hair and blend in beautifully with the natural hair creating a much thicker, softer look. Your eyebrows will look more even, more symmetrical, and fuller. Is there any discomfort associated with a PMU procedure? With a typical treatment it will last no more than two hours. I like to take my time and focus on the tiniest details to ensure smiles from clients for years to come. Similarly, I take extra time to ensure that each client understands the aftercare instructions because we are a team. Together, we will achieve the desired result within the range of possibilities. With each client, I begin with a consultation to understand the needs and share how my style can or can’t suit their expectations. There is little discomfort. I apply numbing cream before and during the procedure. How long will the permanent makeup last? The average microblading lasts ten months to one year, and that time frame is dependent on several factors: skin type, skincare, and lifestyle. I remind clients about the importance of wearing SPF to protect their skin and protect the color of their microblading, which will last longer with SPF. If I’m also considering a Botox/chemical peel/laser procedure, should I have it before or after the PMU treatment? If you underwent Botox, you must wait a minimum of two weeks before doing any microblading treatments. Also, it would be best if you avoided chemical peels at least four weeks before your microblading appointment. Generally, all skincare treatments should be done four weeks before or four weeks after your microblading meeting. And as a rule, no laser on your eyebrows. THE WRITE STUFF

THE ART & FINERY OF LETTER WRITING By Melanie Carden

etter writing is a gracious, intimate art form—and it’s time to usher its tangible expressions back into our lives. As a child, my mother and I spent Saturday mornings searching for treasures at estate sales—antiques that unknowing folks might be selling on the cheap. I would always buy vintage stationery boxes, spilling over with the most ephemeral sheets of writing paper. Their charms were always competing for my attention, thick cards—ornately designed—and whisper-thin sheets of paper with gold embossed envelopes. Every piece seemed to have its destiny—a calling to deliver my heartfelt scribbles to friends and family. There is hope the pandemic will end soon, but it has brought to the forefront of our lives how intensely important it is to maintain human connection. Texts and emails are convenient but admittedly a bit lackluster and, at times, truncated to the point of having no genuine connection at all. What a feeling to receive a handwritten letter in the mail—something other than bills, junk mail, and donation requests. This gracious and luxurious art form is both endearing and enduring. Twenty years from now, grandkids won’t be sifting through old texts reminiscing about our lives well-lived. They’ll be pouring over—or pining for—tangible photos and handwritten notes. Letters are the perpetual journal of our intertwined lives.

ENGAGING MISSSIVES Letter writing can be a quick notecard or lengthy letter. But either is a tactile and always-appreciated message that strengthens our emotional wellbeing. • Handwrite your letter and keep the tone conversational. • Open by asking how they (and their family) are doing. • Include something personal, “I saw something that reminded me of you…” • Share what’s going on in your life—in as much (or little) detail as appropriate to your relationship. • Close by mentioning you’d love to hear back from them—offer a question they can answer to kick-start their return letter, “I’d love to hear more about your new puppy—feel free to drop me a note sometime soon.” 26 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

STAMP OF APPROVAL A handwritten letter—regardless of its length—expresses devoted time to its recipient. Even how you position your postage can convey a clandestine message. • Upside down: I love you or expression of lonesome. • Sideways (top of the stamp to right): love & kisses. • Sideways (top of the stamp to the left): I promise not to leave you. • Diagonal, tilted right: Will you marry me?

INK MARKS

Writing a letter is as joyful for the writer as it is for the recipient. With a suitable writing instrument, the glide of ink across paper is wonderfully meditative. • The True Writer Classic Ivory & Gold Fountain Pen from Levenger is a graceful choice with a light-in-hand feel and effortless flow. Info: levenger.com. • I’m a die-hard devotee of the mechanical pencil, and though I write my correspondence in ink—I always make notes before the ink hits the paper—and always with a mechanical pencil. Graf Von Faber-Castell— celebrating its 260th anniversary—has issued a special edition of its Perfect Pencil. It is magnificent in every way imaginable and boasts luxurious extras such as the artistically faceted jade embedded in its cap. Info: graf-vonfaber-castell.com.

QUALITY STOCK Your stationery should reflect the purpose of your letter—and your personality as well. First things first, get your bespoke cards. Flat cards, folded cards, and sheets of adorned paper; you’ll want a smattering of each. • Mrs. John L. Strong Founded in 1929, it’s the benchmark for the finest stationery of the highest quality. Originally based in her sister’s trousseau shop on New York’s Upper East Side, their headquarters are still on Madison Avenue. Info: mrsstrong.com. • Alissa Bell’s California studio is an absolute stand-out for its richly-hued designs. Info: alissabell. com. • Rifle Paper Company’s Social Stationery Sets are a smart choice for both beauty and versatility—for folded cards and sheets alike. Info: riflepaperco.com. • Papier offers myriad designs that will infuse your letters with an understated punch of personality. So, whether you’re an avid cyclist, gardener, or world traveler, this was made for you. Info: papier.com/us. Of course, you can always follow my younger self ’s lead and keep a watchful eye for vintage stationery. But do begin your letter writing straight away. There are stirrings on the infinite web—outlets such as The Atlantic and Martha Stewart have also sounded a rallying cry. We must reignite the tangible, intentional connectivity of letter writing. •

ANGUILLA IT’S A SHORE THING By Gerrie Summers

ditor’s Note: At press time, most Caribbean islands are welcoming visitors, with protocols in place. However, there are public health procedures, most of which require travelers to produce proof of a COVID-free test. Check websites for more up-to-date requirements. Anguilla, located in the British West Indies, is one of the most enchanting and romantic islands in the eastern Caribbean. The laid-back island is open and welcomes visitors to its shores. During this visit, my luxurious home was Malliouhana, Auberge Resorts Collection, perched high on a bluff overlooking three beaches: Turtle Cove, the secluded Bobbing Cove Beach, and Meads Bay. Malliouhana, the Amerindian name given to the island by the first settlers, means “arrow-shaped sea serpent.” However, the island was later called Anguilla by European settlers, the Italian word for “eel.” When Malliouhana debuted in 1981, it set a new standard for luxury resorts, and now like the island, the resort is the go-to for luxury getaways. The recent restoration now boasts oceanfront rooms and suites, 17 new beachfront suites and villas, including a new two-bedroom beachfront suite on Turtle Cove, upping the total room count to 63. Along Turtle Cove, the Terrace Suites are charming, with oversized private patios and separate sun terraces, and direct beach access. Televisions are nowhere to be seen. (Hint: look inside the large mirrors! The screen is hidden there, but why both with such fabulous views outside your patio doors?) With cabanas on the upper level, the two-tiered infinity pool is the place one can lounge and enjoy lunch and drinks delivered by attentive pool attendants. And after a day of soaking up the rays, head to the Malliouhana Spa with six treatment rooms, a fullservice salon, private fitness training rooms, and its own infinity pool overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Meads Bay. 28 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

SIP & SAVOR Celeste, a lovely open-air restaurant, is the perfect place to start your day, with beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and delicious Crab & Avocado Toast, washed down with a Passion Fruit Bellini. Later make dinner a memorable time with Local Conch Tiradito and Lobster Ceviche. When in Anguilla, you need to try the Grilled Crayfish. It’s a spotted spiny lobster, but don’t tell them that! It’s smaller and sweeter than Caribbean lobster. At Bar Soleil find comfy built-in divans or head to the terrace and enjoy the sunset as you try Caribbean red bean hummus on crispy pita or guacamole on corn chips, and sip on a rum cocktail. Nearby, Leon’s at Mead’s Bay has a toes-in-the-sand modern beach shack vibe, with hammocks strung between palm trees and beach games like volleyball for fun during the day. At night listen to local entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays while savoring Caribbean dishes. Forget the Luther Burger or that trendy Chicken and Donuts Sandwich. Try Leon’s signature Johnny Cake Burger and a Sorrel Punch (made with rum and house-made sorrel liqueur).

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Malliouhana offers Auberge Adventures to introduce guests to Anguilla’s hidden treasures. One fun way to see Anguilla is their Beach-Fari excursion in an electric moke, (an iconic Caribbean vehicle) for a guided day-long tour of some of Anguilla’s 33 beaches. • Our first stop was at the scenic Anguilla Arch, in the far West End, relatively unknown until Instagram and still challenging to find without local help. It’s worth a visit for stunning views. • On Sandy Ground, Elvis’ Beach Bar, with its beach shack decor of university/sports team flags and a bar repurposed from an actual wooden boat, serves the Caribbean and Mexican fare, like fish tacos, or to be more island-centric, try the “goatchos,” nachos with the slow-cooked local goat. Hang out with Elvis at night and try his Mammawanna shot, an herb-infused rum concoction. • Rendezvous Bay is a great walking beach and the site of the MoonSplash Music Festival at Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve in May. • In The Valley, Anguilla’s capital, you can get an authentic homestyle taste of Anguillian food at Mabel Gumbs’ tented roadside table. Known as the “Godmother of Saturday soup” and “corn soup lady,” try Mabel’s famous corn soup, conch dumplings (steamed, with coconut and spices), and Johnny cakes are also a must. • Shoal Bay East is Anguilla’s most famous beach, considered one of the best beaches on the island and the world. It is postcard perfect with many restaurants, beach bars, water sports, and regular dolphin sightings. • Next stop is Da’Vida Bayside Grill in Crocus Bay. I learned about the legendary Frozen Mojito and enjoyed the seafood salad as well. Kayaks and paddleboards can be rented from Da’Vida to get you over to Little Bay, a popular place to snorkel, where the adventurous jump from a cliff into the sea. For information on Anguilla, go to visitanguilla. com; for Malliouhana, Auberge Resorts Collection, visit aubergereesorts.com/malliouhana. • MAY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 29

THE SAYRE MANSION ALWAYS ROOM AT THE INN By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva

perfect way to experience the energy of Bethlehem, one of Pennsylvania’s resurging cities, is with a stay at the bed and breakfast inn that was once the home of Robert Heysham Sayre, one of the community’s most distinguished men. The Sayre Mansion, a Gothic Revival-style mansion completed in 1858, is a member of the Select Registry and the Historic Hotels of America. The mansion was built in the wealthy neighborhood of Fountain Hill primarily because of its proximity to the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s main headquarters. Sayre was Superintendent and Chief Engineer of the railroad. Still, he was also to become a significant force in building, shaping, and guiding many organizations and institutions that brought prosperity and culture to the city. Serving as a trustee of the Episcopalian Cathedral Church of the Nativity, which still stands across from the Mansion, Sayre led many meetings to result in the founding of St. Luke’s Hospital, Lehigh University, and the Fountain Hill Opera House. Also, along the Lehigh River banks, adjacent to the Lehigh Valley Railroad tracks, Sayre helped build and manage the Bethlehem Irons Works, the precursor of Bethlehem Steel. Today, The Sayre Mansion, known as “Bethlehem’s Urban Haven,” reflects the grace and elegance of its history yet offers the modern touches of its meticulous restoration. The inn has 19 classic guestrooms and three spacious Carriage House suites. Many rooms are unique in design and appearance, featuring original details such as vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, detailed woodwork, and gold leaf ceilings. Suites are spacious and include fireplaces and whirlpool tubs.

SPECIAL FEATURES Guests are invited to visit a unique area located on the top floor called The Conservatory, which features a ceiling made entirely of glass. A garden breakfast nook, trickling fountains, and lush green plants add to the room’s appeal. Stroll along the two acres of picturesque grounds, which provide a beautiful setting for outdoor affairs on the terrace or simple relaxation on the front porch. Amenities include fine linens, private baths, Wi-Fi, and a full breakfast. On Thursdays, the mansion’s dining room and adjoining parlor host the extremely popular Afternoon Tea. A variety of packages are offered seasonally; a popular one arising from the proliferation of craft breweries in the area is the Bed & Brew Package. Mother’s Day Brunch is being offered this month.

The Conservatory

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS The Lehigh River dissects Bethlehem, resulting in essentially two downtowns. Sayre Mansion is just steps from South Side’s downtown (a hip, eclectic vibe) and just a short walk across a bridge to North Side (quaint and historical). Bethlehem was founded on Christmas Day in 1741 by the Moravians, and many of the group’s original buildings still exist. In 1937, Bethlehem was officially declared Christmas City USA. Historic Moravian Bethlehem is a National Historic Landmark District, and the Moravian Bookshop is the oldest bookstore in America. The city has a rich history beginning in colonial times, continuing through the industrial age, and eventually to the rise and fall of Bethlehem Steel. Take in some of this history with a walking tour or museum visit. Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites conduct various walking tours, both guided and self-guided, with their app. Check out the National Museum of Industrial History housed in the former Electric Repair Shop on the Bethlehem Steel campus.

The Sayre Mansion Sitting Room

With a wide array of music venues, including the popular ArtsQuest at the Steel Stacks, Bethlehem is a city of music. The 10-acre campus of Steel Stacks on the former site of Bethlehem Steel has become an entertainment mecca. It includes Wind Creek Casino and Shopping Mall, restaurants, two event centers, an outdoor stage, an industrial museum, and the Hoover-Mason Trestle. For ten days each August, the city celebrates Musikfest, the nation’s largest non-gated free musical festival.

WINE & DINE

ZEST Bar + Grille

Dining options abound in Bethlehem, but you must experience ZEST bar + grille, which sits on the top floor of 306 S New Street, the only rooftop restaurant in the Lehigh Valley. Offering threeseason terrace seating with spectacular views, Zest strives to capture the very meaning of its definition—great enthusiasm and energy—in its culinary and social experience. Zest offers creative culinary choices and well-crafted cocktails. The Seared Sea Scallops were perfectly done, but it was the Scallion Risotto with mushroom and ponzu emulsion that took the dish to another level. If the Pasta of the Day is Orecchiette with crab and short rib—don’t pass it up. You should also experience Lehigh Valley’s oldest winery and its first distillery—both founded and operated by the same family! Stop in at Franklin Hill Vineyard’s wine tasting shop on Main St. (North Side) and taste some of their many choices of locally grown and produced wines. Then head over to South Side to Social Still MicroDistillery & Kitchen. Cleverly nestled in an old bank building, replete with the original vaults, Social Still produces and serves small-batch, hand-crafted spirits and a selection of intriguing sandwiches, burgers, and entrees.

TIME TO FLY AWAY THE MALDIVES: TRAVEL FANTASIES CAN COME TRUE By Jenny Peters

ot your COVID-19 vaccination and feel ready to return to a reality that allows you to give your wanderlust full rein once again? We know we’re not the only ones that have spent a year fantasizing about flying off to faraway tropical destinations that genuinely fulfill the “bucket list” idea; armed with our vaccines to protect us, we’re ready to go. For many of us dreamers, the Maldives is the epitome of a true paradise on earth. This country, made up of atolls (islands), is located southwest of India, near the equator in the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few places that has been open to travelers with negative COVID-19 tests (and now vaccinations) throughout 2020 and on into 2021. With most resorts located on private islands, keeping people safe and secluded has always been a part of the Maldivian Islanders’ way.

MALDIVES MAGIC Being avid scuba divers, we came to the Maldives to see everything under the famous brilliantly blue, comfortably warm waters. Others we met were celebrating honeymoons, anniversaries, or other important life moments. Because we wanted to experience the world-class scuba diving found there, we chose to visit two different resorts to see the diverse parts of this legendary underwater destination. But most visitors choose just one resort to call home, as spending time traveling defeats the purpose of vacationing in paradise. As divers, the best times to journey to the Maldives (say Mal-deeves) isn’t high season, which happens from January to April, when there is little rain, warm temperatures, low tropical humidity. And while that means excellent visibility under the water, it isn’t when the famed whale sharks and manta rays come to visit. That’s typically May to November, especially in the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in Hanifaru Bay near Baa Atoll. 34 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

HEAVENLY HAVENS Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort We went in August and had perfect sunny weather, albeit with humidity reminiscent of a New York August. But nothing else was remotely like New York, beginning with staying in an overwater bungalow at the Mercure Maldives Kooddoo on Gaafu Alifu Atoll in the southern part of the country. That gorgeous resort has a beautiful coral lagoon that creates the atoll’s calm innerlagoon water. Just drop in off your villa’s deck with snorkel gear in hand and take in the beauty of it all. The Mercure has only 68 villas, two restaurants, two bars, and a white-sand beach complemented with an infinity pool. Like most resorts in the Maldives, it has its own dive operation, with expert dive masters to guide you, whether you’re a beginner or much more experienced like we are. Heading down amidst the beautiful coral and clear water, watch for manta rays, sharks, and the thousands of tropical fish that call this part of the world home. And if you’d rather sip frozen drinks complete with umbrellas and work on your tan, do it. Info: all.accor.com. Heritance Aarah Resort Our next stop was the Heritance Aarah Resort on the Raa Atoll, a luxurious place not far from Male (and close to the Baa Atoll). Choose between an overwater ocean villa or a pool beach villa and settle in. This all-inclusive resort offers five bars, six restaurants, and room service as well, with seafood cuisine leading the way, melded with Indian, French, and Sri Lankan cuisine choices. Lazing all day looking out over the water is tempting, especially if you’ve chosen to stay in an overwater suite with its infinity pool, but with so much to see in and under those crystal-clear warm waters, you’ve just got to jump in. There’s flyboarding, sailing, snorkeling, kite or windsurfing, and jet skiing on offer here, plus scuba diving and the chance to see more underwater beauties. Being under the water here is akin to swimming through the most incredible coral-filled aquarium your mind can imagine. Sea turtles meander by, white-tipped sharks slice sleekly past, and—if you’re lucky—a school of spotted eagle rays or perhaps a silvery crowd of sharp-teethed barracuda slide into view. It’s truly heavenly. Info: heritancehotels.com.

A trip to the Maldives is just what the doctor ordered after more than a year in quarantine, but we warn you— once you go, your new post-pandemic dreams will be of returning. After all, there are 245 different resorts to see there before you die.

GETTING THERE The quickest way to get from New York City to Male, the capital of the Maldives, is to go via Dubai. Expect it to take 19 hours (or more) to get there, for you will be traveling about 8,700 miles; Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, all topnotch airlines, are the quickest choices. Upon arrival, you’ll then catch a small seaplane to your resort island. WANDER WITH WONDER RECONNECT & REJUVENATE By Melanie Carden

anderlust isn’t a mood. It’s a lifestyle with a passion to explore the wonders of the world, immerse ourselves in new cultures, and give wings to our curious whims. We long to disconnect from the grid—and reconnect with our intuitive sense of adventure. Some may want to hike mountains—others to sip their morning coffee while watching the morning mist dissipate through the forest leaves. Wanderlust—once loosely associated with hippie culture—is quickly becoming a game-changer in the travel industry. Just as people are shifting to the preference for open-air shopping experiences, some travelers opt to ditch the square, homogenized rooms of traditional hotels searching for more. The trend of unique travel experiences such as tiny houses, yurts, geodomes, and safari-style glamping offers travelers a union of simplicity and the great outdoors—with touches of convenience and even luxury.

TREEHOUSE DREAMS The Mohicans Treehouse Hotel is a 77acre opportunity to live out your childhood tree fort dreams. With a Midwest location, it offers six lavish ground cabins and nine state-of-art treehouses—including The Silver Bullet treehouse made from a vintage 32-foot Airstream trailer. Two of the treehouses were designed by Pete Nelson, star of Discovery Channel’s hit series Treehouse Masters. The property welcomes dogs and has a nofireworks policy. If these lush treehouses are good enough for the rugged Matthew McConaughey, they’re an absolute yes for me. Info: themohicans.net. MAY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 37

Each works in tandem with nature, offering locally sourced produce, hot breakfasts, bottomless coffee, charcuterie boards, salads, and fresh fish. You might read a book and enjoy the tranquility—but if you’re looking for more, each property has an Adventure Concierge to help coordinate curated excursions. Info: undercanvas.com.

LOVE OF LAND Explore the beauty of Bar Harbor, Maine, and its surroundings at Terramor (“Love of Land”). WHAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY? Cryptocurrency is a medium of exchange that is digital, encrypted and decentralized. Unlike the U.S. dollar, there is no central authority that manages and maintains the value of a cryptocurrency. Instead, these tasks are distributed amongst the cryptocurrency’s users via the internet. Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency, is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof which comes in the form of transactions that are recorded in a form of program called a blockchain an open distributed ledger that records transaction in code. Transactions are recorded in “blocks” that are linked together on a “chain” of previous cryptocurrency transactions. Cryptocurrency was very much a niche market until a series of events began to occur in February of 2021. Tesla announced in an SEC filing that it had bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin for more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on its cash. Tesla also said it would start accepting payments in bitcoin in exchange for its products “subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis”. The move made Tesla the first automaker to do so. The price of one bitcoin climbed from $14,156 at the beginning of 2018 and reached an alltime high of $63,888 on Apri 13,2021 before retreating back to the $50,000 price range at the time of this article.

BITCOIN MEETS REAL ESTATE Bitcoin is now a currency that is spreading to the real estate market. New York Lifestyles Magazine recently spoke with one of NYC’s leading financial directors and well-known New York Knicks courtside season ticket holder, Richard Anthony of Oppenheimer and Company about both his apartment at 441 East 57th Street and Bitcoin. Richard echoed the following statements about Bitcoin and his apartment at 441 East 57th Street. “Bitcoin is officially institutional and I want to start the trend of using it for real estate transactions. Not only am I a big believer in Bitcoin, but I am putting my townhouse on the market in exchange for Bitcoin only. I am selling my apartment at 441 East 57th Street for Bitcoin because I want to turn all of my hard assets into Bitcoin. I will also be buying in Manhattan but only from a seller who will accept Bitcoin”. We also spoke with Associate-Broker Jamie Safier of Douglas Elliman to get his thoughts on attracting a buyer for a property that is being sold on the market for Bitcoin. Jamie told us, “There’s always risks involved when doing a major real estate transaction without a licensed broker that should not be taken lightly. However, as a strong proponent of Bitcoin, this is certainly interesting and I can understand the appeal. I’m sure we will all see how this plays out in an ever-changing real estate market.” Info: For more details on 441 East 57th Street Unit 1 contact Richard Anthony by e-mail at Ranthony1120@gmail.com. • MAY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 41

Most homes feature Hudson River views and the development features thoughtfully curated amenities that include a roof terrace with barbeque, fitness room on the 2nd floor, outdoor playscape, and bicycle storage. The building is staffed with a part-time doorman, seven days a week. The building was named for Dorothy Parker (born Rothschild), who grew up in a Queen Anne townhouse at this site and was subsequently damaged when “The Corner” rental building began construction. The famous author, screenwriter, critic, and poet sold her first poem to Vanity Fair in 1914; she was also part of the famous Algonquin Roundtable. The development team is seeking a Literary Landmark Designation in New York State in recognition of the site.

Parker West is standout for its look: a chic gray façade consisting of limestone panels with a substantial granite base, anodized aluminum detailing, and exquisite window surrounds complete with a bronze finish among old-world co-ops on the Upper West Side. Many of the three-bedroom homes start at under $3 million. This is almost unheard of in NYC’s new developments! GRADE, led by Thomas Hickey and Edward Yedid, conceptualized the building from the ground up. “We are thrilled to offer a unique mix of full-floor homes with river views and open plans,” says Scott Schnay, Principal of SK Development. “We worked with GRADE, an incredible design firm, who understood our vision and made it come to life. We believe in New York, and we’re proud to be in such a prime location and quintessential New York neighborhood, moments away from Central Park, Riverside Park, culture and entertainment.” S elect homes at Parker West feature generously proportioned private outdoor space. Amenities include a stunning roof terrace complete with a gas barbeque, seasonal planters, and expansive river and city views. There is a fitness center, bicycle storage, and an outdoor children’s playscape ideal for playdates.

180 EAST 88TH STREET NO ORDINARY RESIDENCE By AP Connolly

esigned by DDG and inspired by the boom in high-rise masonry construction in New York in the early 20th century, 180 East 88th Street pays homage to the lost art of traditional craftsmanship. It features iconic arches and a striking hand-laid brick façade made of nearly 600,000 handmade bricks by Denmark’s master brickworks Petersen Tegl. These bricks, which include the elegant, elongated Kolumba style, possess unique texture and color palette that reflect their handmade quality. The building’s corners feature intricate detail and craftsmanship, with a dense horizontal feather pattern that softens the edges of the elevations from the bottom to the top. The bronze-colored accents on each window frame will complement the private gated entrance. 50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

THE RESIDENCES

It’s just as beautiful inside: wood flooring, imported from Austria, is used throughout the residences. The striking lobby has been designed with vaulted plaster ceilings with architectural concrete walls, silver Travertine floor inlaid with Austrian white oak and an elegant fireplace. Ceiling heights stretch up to 14’-2” and 28’-8” in duplexes, making room for immense 9’ tall tilt-turn windows. Unique design accents found throughout each home include classic picture rails, baseboard reveals, and a formal entry gallery appointed with herringbone flooring, custom wainscoting, and plaster ceiling details. Molteni & C Dada’s custom kitchens for DDG feature luxury finishes, including honed Italian Statuario marble slab countertops, white lacquer cabinetry, and kitchen islands with stone and white oak island fronts. HEALTH & WELLNESS

LYMPH FOR LIFE

EASY WAYS TO CLEANSE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM By Melanie Carden

he immune system—the headline-grabbing superstar of wellness stories—has its own bouncer, of sorts—the lymphatic system. This often-overlooked system is the true hero, and most of us have been ignoring it. So, what does it do? Cynthia Schechter

The lymphatic system—a complex network of vessels throughout the body—removes toxins from our bodies and expels them through sweat, urine, and bodily waste. It’s not sexy, I know, which is why it’s not in the headlines very much. But here’s the thing, our immunity is directly tied to how well (or not) our lymphatic system is functioning. To grasp the far-reaching importance of healthy lymphatic flow, New Jersey lymphedema specialist Cynthia J. Shechter shared some essential facts. “A sluggish lymphatic system can result in a lowered immune system, fluid retention, cellulite, and fatty deposits. Those with lymphatic sluggishness have experienced symptoms that include respiratory issues, sinus infections, swollen glands, eczema, ear infections, dry skin, fatigue, unexplained weight gain, food sensitivities, and muscle and joint stiffness or soreness; especially when they wake.”

A BODY IN BALANCE Shechter’s statement lands with a wallop because most of us experience some of these issues at different times. The symptoms themselves are challenging—but remember that these are also indications that your overall immune system may not be functioning at its best. Schechter describes the lymphatic system as the tool which helps keep the body in balance. But when things go wrong and not functioning well, it cannot help defending our bodies against illness-causing germs, bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The system builds immunity by making white blood cells responsible for immune responses that protect the body against disease. 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Jaime Cross

Even a brief discussion of lymph leads to the quick realization that this natural detoxification process should prioritize our day-to-day wellness goals. Nutrition Eating whole, nutritionally-dense foods is vital. Highly processed foods introduce into our system foreign chemicals and additives that can be a challenge to process. Avoid added sugar, artificial ingredients, and additives while focusing on a diet of grass-fed proteins, low-sugar fruits, vegetables, nuts, and dark leafy greens. Drinking plenty of water aids in the detoxification process. Breathing Shechter reminds us to create time throughout the day for deep breathing. “It will help detoxify the system, and it’s great for reducing stress, which can also add to the toxins in your body.” Sleep As with all health-related topics, sleep is vital to the proper functioning of lymph movement. Most experts still agree that 8-hours is a good goal. Massage Many spas now offer lymphatic drainage massage as a targeted service for clients. A quick Google search will also yield self-massage techniques to incorporate into your daily routine. Shechter also mentions the benefits of gentle skin-based activation of lymph movement—called dry brushing. Dry Brushing Taking a cue from Shechter, dry brushing is an excellent way to kick-start lymph movement. Although I’ve heard of dry brushing, I called on Jaime Cross for her expertise. Cross is the MIG Living founder, an international leader in clean skincare and wellness. Cross explains that it’s low-cost, easy-toincorporate, and highly effective. All you need is a bristle or boar-head brush. Before showering, brush your skin in an upwards motion beginning at your feet. Direct all brush strokes towards your heart. Work your way upwards counterclockwise to dry brush your entire body. Cross shares these benefits of dry brushing: • Directs and increases lymphatic flow, promoting faster removal of excess interstitial fluid. • Reduces swelling and water retention. • Improves the immune system due to the critical elimination of toxins. • Minimizes cellulite’s appearance by reducing the amount of fluid that presses up against the cross-hatched fibers beneath your skin. • Promotes body and mental relaxation. • Provides an overall lightness in the body. Exercise Both Shechter and Cross stress the importance of exercise as the most effective way of improving lymph function. You don’t need to be a marathon runner—daily low-to-moderate movement will work wonders, especially if you follow the other guidance. The action gets lymph moving and sweat expels toxins; it’s a win-win. Shechter and Cross also echo the suggestion of many lymph-wellness sources— rebounding (a bouncy activity like jump rope or bouncing on a small fitness trampoline) can be a great lymph mover. Avoiding chronic illness and a devastatingly long list of day-to-day health issues relies on our awareness of the lymphatic system. Proper, natural detoxification of the body is within our reach every day. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Reduce consumption of highly processed foods and added sugar. Instead, focus on low-sugar fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grass-fed protein. Grab a dry brush and make that spa appointment. Remember, though, to incorporate these wellness strategies in tandem to get the lymph flowing properly, improve immune function, and live your best life. BALANCED NUTRITION ESSENTIAL SUPERFOODS WILL ALWAYS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE By Cecilia Deignan

t has been quite a year. From virtual classrooms and telecommuting to shelter in place. Thankfully, it is changing. By adhering to public health measures, observing medical advisories, and getting the shot in the arm we have slowed the spread of this disease. Naturally, some safety measures will be around for a long time, presenting the perfect opportunity to protect and improve your health. But this should not surprise anyone. Even before the sudden emphasis on health, we knew that a nutritious diet was vital in keeping the immune system in prime condition. But sadly, half of U.S. consumers have reported cutting back on their food spending in 2020 due to job loss, financial concerns, and in some cases, lack of wholesome foods available at the grocer. According to McKinsey & Company, most consumers continue to search for more economical ways to prepare nutritious meals, especially since pivoting to more eating at home. Nicole Avena, Ph.D., nutrition expert and author of What to Eat When You Want to Get Pregnant, weighed in on ways to obtain essential nutrients and offer budget-friendly tips to curate a balanced, nutritious diet to suit all tastes. “A lot of people are ensuring they are stocked up with shelf-stable foods. Although buying products like boxed pasta and canned foods can be affordable and efficient, it might not always provide those essential nutrients,” says Avena. “Developing a healthy eating pattern is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor, and it does not have to be hard on your wallet, but it does need some planning and a little creativity.”

Here, our favorite nutritionist provided some budget-friendly advice to obtain essential nutrients and boost your immune system as we emerge from living in pandemic. • Buy legumes in bulk. Legumes are a healthy, nutritious, and affordable option to prepare and are low in calories. They are also high in protein and a good source of fiber, iron, and potassium. Studies have shown that a high intake of legumes is linked to significantly lower heart disease risks, high blood pressure, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. For an easier transition to incorporate more legumes within your budget, expand variety in meals by purchasing lentils, dried beans, chickpeas, and seeds in bulk. • Cook more, eat out less. Ordering takeout comes with steep price markups, delivery fees, and tips, whereas buying pre-packaged frozen foods can save your budget. Today’s consumers can prepare home-cooked meals healthier and inexpensively. Source a few simple and healthy recipes your family enjoys and save takeout for those special occasions. • Shop for foods in season. During trips to the supermarket, look for fresh produce that is at peak as you can get a large amount for much less. Most vegetables and fruit can be refrigerated allowing you to stretch your dollars and stockpile. • Get your dose of vitamins. Consuming adequate vitamins and nutrients daily is a wonderful way to support unique health needs proactively. Suppose there is an inability to meet daily nutrient requirements or a confirmed deficiency. In that case, a multivitamin supplement like Vitafusion MultiVites is an easy alternative to getting a dose of essential vitamins A, C, D, E, B12, and B6. • Expand your palate beyond salads. Eating similar meals day in and day out can be an effective strategy for maintaining long-term weight loss, except this type of diet may hold nutritional gaps. Many people associate a healthy diet with endless salads, but various cuisines are budget-friendly, flavorful, and nutritious. Mediterranean cuisine has high rates of monounsaturated fats (olive oil and nuts), while Japanese fare is also abundant in essential nutrients (fish and vegetables) making them wonderful options to include in your meal planning.

Remember, eating healthy is not about strict limitations, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it is about feeling great, having more energy, and improving your health. A balanced diet does not have to be overly complicated: if you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition advice out there, you are not alone. The truth is your overall dietary pattern is important. Eating foods that are close to the way nature created them can make a difference in how you think, look, and feel. Nicole Avena

MIFUNE NEW YORK A DOSE OF CULINARY DRAMA By Patricia Canole

t celebrity-named restaurants, fame is always cooking. Take Michael Jordan’s Steak House, Chicago; Pronto by Giada (chef Giada de Laurentiis), Las Vegas; and Restaurant Daniel (Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud), New York City. And the list goes on. Jimmy Buffett, Arnold Palmer, and Toby Keith triumph too. So why not a restaurant named to honor Japan’s action hero, Toshiro Mifune, star of such classic samurai movies as Seven Samurai and Rasho-Mon? You might expect a flamboyant décor in homage to the actor, but in fact, there’s just one photo of him. Otherwise, the restaurant, designed by Katsunori Takeuchi, opens to a large, high-ceilinged main room done in traditional natural wood, with three large shoji-style panels on the far wall accented with the Mifune family crest.

INNOVATIVE JAPANESE

MIFUNE’s cast of top Michelin-starred chefs displays a level of refinement that would make its namesake proud. The restaurant is an offshoot of the well-known Paris restaurant Sola; the New York restaurant is led by chef-owner Hiroki Yoshitake. His washoku cuisine features traditional Japanese cooking that places prime importance on the land and sea’s seasonal bounty. The re-imagined French techniques create innovative, artistically composed dishes. Yoshitake seeks to provide guests with a completely new Japanese dining experience.

Co-execitove chefs Tomohiro Urata and Yuu Shimano

56 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

The Michelin-starred co-executive chefs Yuu Shimano formerly worked at Guy Savoy in Paris, and Tomohiro Urata honed his skills at La Maison Troisgros in Roanne. The result is a menu full of uniquely flavored dishes that never stray far from Japanese or French traditions. The food is flush with luxe ingredients—caviar, foie gras, truffle, and foams—all making appearances on the menu.

A BEAUTIFUL PRESENTATION

An excellent way to see what MIFUNE is about is to order the Chef ’s Tasting Menu and experience a seasonal menu based on what is fresh at the market. My fellow reviewer and I began with Porcini Mushroom Cream Soup with pistachio cream foam, with its earthy flavor yet mild enough to not overwhelm the senses. Next came a lustrous Seared Squid and Cauliflower platter brushed with soy sauce and lightly seared, enhanced with shaved cauliflower, black olive powder, and persimmon. It was addictive with an outstanding flavor at the right temperature.

Beef Tataki

After a Steamed Egg Custard to cleanse the palate, we enjoyed Duck Liver Pate enveloped in a pie crust with cashew nuts, sliced fresh endive, and caramelized grapes with cheese and poached egg, which surprised and stimulated the appetite. Filet Mignon Rossini, embellished with foie gras, potato puree, and black garlic sauce, is beautifully presented (as were, in fact, all courses) and proved the global reach again at this fine restaurant. Another tempting course included Seared Scallop with Sunchoke puree and porcini ravioli wrapped in pickled daikon. Dessert completed a special evening with a soothing ending. Gateau Opera (Kabocha Pumpkin Custard Cream) and Strawberry Compote with sorbet, proving that pleasurable French desserts are almost always going to win you over. Highlights from the a la carte menu include appetizers such as Whiting Tempura in turnip green leaf yuzu sauce and Herb Roasted Salmon with pickles, capers, wasabi, and parsley butter. Notable entrees are Braised Berkshire Pork Belly with roasted chicory and cream cheese, Beef Tataki, Octopus Frites, and Seared Squid with Caviar.

Cocktails with a Twist Seared squid with caviar

COCKTAILS WITH A TWIST

Not to be overlooked are the number of cocktails from acclaimed mixologist Shingo Gokan who brings a dose of drama to the table. A rye and koshu-aged sake cocktail called Seven Samurai arrives in a glass infused with clove and cinnamon smoke tableside. The Drunken Angel is built with Hibiki Harmony Japanese Whisky, umeshu plum wine, and shiso leaf. There’s also a diverse, rotating global selection of wines available, with wine and sake pairings tailored to the tasting menu. Although MIFUNE is one of many Asian restaurants in the city, others can’t compare to the superb presentation and service. The menu is a breathtaking exercise in the depth of flavor, taste, and texture. A visit to MIFUNE is a must for 2021 but be aware you’ll never get the same dish twice. WELCOME TO OUR KITCHEN A FARM-TO-TABLE ASIAN EXPERIENCE DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR By Patricia Canole

umplings, Buns, Mooncakes. It’s all here with lots more to whet your appetite. The recently launched Our Kitchen, the farm-to-table meal service, delivers healthy and authentic Chinese dishes to New Yorkers and beyond. The brainchild of 25-year-old Paulo Wei, he emphasizes all ingredients on his menu are sourced from his 43-acre farm situated along the Neversink River in Port Jervis, New York. Once harvested and subsequently prepared by onsite chefs, foods are then flash frozen before shipping. Paulo Wei is committed to bringing authentic Chinese dishes inspired from his childhood meals to homes nationwide conveniently, efficiently, and deliciously. Our Kitchen delicacies range from $12 to $20 with selections including farm-grown Beef and Carrot Dumplings, Seasons Fish Dumplings, Beef and Onion Dumplings, Sun Xian (Shrimp, Pork and Oriental Chives), Organic Vegetarian Bao Zi (Buns), and Mooncakes that maintain optimal freshness. Paulo was inspired to start Our Kitchen by his grandmother, Li Ya-Wen. Paulo would make the same vegetarian dumpling recipe with his grandmother in his childhood years that is now a staple on the Our Kitchen menu. “I’ve wanted to create a serious food brand with incredible products that align with authentic Chinese food culture. For those looking to escape New York City for an adventure, Our Kitchen offers private tours of the farm and grounds and a chance to shop at the farm stand for fresh ingredients. On a tour of the gardens, guests can also see firsthand how they cultivate products using traditional and contemporary techniques, including fermentation and crop rotation. Paulo and the Our Kitchen team also plan to transform the farm’s 80 horse stables, two large houses, and Olympic-sized horse arena into a boutique hotel. The immersive resort will welcome guests worldwide, offering a luxurious and holistic culinary and wellness experience just hours outside of New York City. We sat down with Paulo to learn a little more about his vision for Our Kitchen. 58 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Paulo Wei

Tell us about your background. I was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, raised in Hong Kong for eight years, before moving to Beijing for 10 years. I moved to the U.S. in 2013, lived in Irvine, California, then a year later moved to New York. I am a big fan of living a healthy lifestyle. That includes following a good diet, consistently working out and practicing yoga and meditation. You’re studying at Columbia University. What impact has that had on your career? I am majoring in Computer Science and East Asian Studies at Columbia University. The one big thing that studying at Columbia has on my career would be training me how to think. There are many times where I would complain about the never-ending schoolwork; now that I think of it, it has trained me in scheduling my time efficiently.

Map Tofu Dumplings

What led you to this concept? Who/what was your inspiration? During COVID-19, I helped multiple Chinese restaurants in New York City in designing and launching the frozen dumpling kit. It was a great success because many people wanted to eat out, but they couldn’t, due to the pandemic. Having the frozen dumpling kit’s launch most definitely fulfilled and hopefully satisfied people’s craving for Asian food. My family was great in supporting me all along the way. I would say my grandparents and both my parents are my inspiration in doing Our Kitchen. Oriental Fried Noodle

With most consumers now cooking at home because of COVID-19, have you seen an uptick in sales? Yes, especially at the very beginning of the pandemic. We sold nearly 8,000 handmade dumplings in two orders! It was a great learning experience for me in trying to keep up with the order while constantly improving the taste of our products. Presently you have a thriving farm/market and online business. Would you ever consider an on-site restaurant with dine-in service in the future? Yes, I most definitely would. We are going to focus on developing our space in upstate New York because of its breathtaking views. We have the Neversink river running right behind our property. How do you develop and build your menu? Are there seasonal options available? Our menu is based on what our customers like. For instance, we see a trend of customers eating spicy food during cold weather. Therefore, this past winter, we designed and launched products with spicy elements. We source from our farm. Therefore, we go according to our seasonal vegetables in designing our menu. Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself in New York! I love New York. Having lived in other cities, New York feels more like home to me than any other place. With such dependence on quality, are you able to assure consistency? Yes, we can assure consistency. We have a team that specializes in ensuring our products are consistent and kept in the best condition. Our Kitchen is more than just another farm-fresh delivery service. As Paulo says: “We focus on our relationships with the customers and their experiences with our products. After all, food is just our byproduct; our real product is capturing and creating a moment.” For more information on Our Kitchen, visit.ourkitchen.us. • MAY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 59

NOREETUH

HAWAIIAN FARE WITH AN EAST VILLAGE VIBE By Anne Raso

awaiian fare has always been something hard to come across even in Manhattan’s hardcore foodie atmosphere. Not since the closing of Roy’s in the Financial District about 12 years ago has there been a Modern Hawaiian restaurant that has been the toast of the town. Noreetuh is taking over that long vacated spot blending different flavors from classic Japanese dishes like Chicken Teriyaki to Korean street food favorites to various SPAM dishes (yes, it’s considered a delicacy in Hawaii). Noreetuh has the classic funky and cozy East Village vibe and is located on First Avenue at St. Mark’s Place. There is plenty of Hawaiian bric-a-brac, including a brass pineapple lamp on the bar and numerous photos of customers pinned to the wall between images of sunsets, palm trees, and surfers. You can spend hours looking at all the incredible art and photos, but you’ll want to spend your time trying several of Noreetuh’s exotic dishes and sampling the great wines available (with over 200 plus varietals, they’ve been awarded two Wine Spectator Excellence Awards). This uncommon eatery is owned by the affable Chung Chow, a Honolulu native who also serves as executive chef, and partners Jin Ahn and Gerald San Jose. This culinary genius spent over a year honing his skills at Bouchon Bistro (in Napa Valley) and then moved onto Per Se and then Lincoln Ristorante (both in NYC). 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Chef Chung Chow

BLENDING CULTURES Chef Chow recently reflected on the fact that his native Hawaii has always been a diverse place with food and culture from all over the world, with a powerful influence from Asia. “Because my family owned and operated a noodle-making business located in Honolulu’s Chinatown, I was always intrigued with the multi-cultural foodstuff being displayed in the shops dotting the streets around the area. From the fish market located near the fragrant flower and lei shops on the side streets, my upbringing constantly evolved around family, food, and cultural diversity. “I first decided to cook when I spent a couple of years living in Japan. At that time, my sister was attending culinary school in Hawaii, and I wanted to follow suit. I eventually ended up going to culinary school in California and started my first cooking job in Napa Valley.” Eventually, Chef Chow moved to New York City for the opening of Per Se restaurant. “After working many years in New York, my partners and I had a vision of opening a restaurant. With our collective experience in the restaurant industry, we wanted to open a place that reflected who we were while implementing ideas and knowledge from our years on the job. Noreetuh is our first restaurant as owners.”

Katsu Sando

A UNIQUE IDENTITY Diners at Noreetuh have come to appreciate Chef Chow’s many uses for SPAM. “Being from Hawaii, eating SPAM is a way of life there. You can find it everywhere and at many casual eateries, including McDonald’s,” remarked the chef. “The SPAM Musubi is an actual dish that’s popular in Hawaii. Ours is just a unique version of it.”

Musubi Platter

The hip chef feels his six-year old restaurant is truly oneof-a-kind yet reasonably-priced. A good reason there are so many repeat customers. “My cooking is a blend of Modern American with influences from my upbringing in Hawaii, as well as those from my culinary career,” he said. “The goal is to combine all these flavors to create memorable dishes using traditional culinary techniques with my background in Hawaiian and Asian influences.” Chef Chow sets the bar for creative food presentations. Whether you come for his legendary Big-Eye Tuna Poke featuring big-eye tuna, macadamia nuts, and pickled jalapenos or his crazy fusion creations like Agnolotti Stuffed with SPAM and Hon-Shimeji mushrooms, you will never be disappointed. Other standouts include Katsu Sando with Berkshire pork cutlet, pickled red cabbage, and King’s Hawaiian bun and the popular Mochiko Fried Chicken with Hawaiian macaroni salad and pickles. “Our goal is always to provide innovative, fun, and delicious food and wine for everyone. Being a trendsetter is never an easy job, especially in a city as diverse as New York,” he explained. “Our goal is to perpetuate our dream of this restaurant that we conceived in the beginning and to propel it the best we can.” It’s no wonder Noreetuh is a New York Times Critic’s Pick and a Michelin Guide recommendation! CONSERVA

ENTERTAINING MADE EASY By Melanie Carden

ave you assembled and devoured a “sea-cuterie” board yet this week? No? Let’s remedy that with haste. Welcome to connoisseurship of conserva—obsessively high-quality preserved foods. With a keen eye on seafood, conserva is heavily rooted in Spain and Portugal and celebrated everywhere from Italy, France, and other parts of Europe. Unlike the bland, dry tuna on most U.S. market shelves, conserva canneries are masters in the culinary art of preservation and elevated food experience. Drew McConnell is Director of Brand Marketing for Barcelona Wine Bar and co-creator of Conserva.com, a lifestyle and entertaining website. He describes conserva as a “pantry-awakening of craft and quality,” and he and his business partner Gretchen Thomas walked me through their expertise in recreating the convivial meal experience one finds at a bar or restaurant. With your shelves stocked with savory nibbles of tinned treats, there is a “sense of ease and wonderment in your pantry.” This naturally lends itself to entertaining: their website spills over with images of decadent tins of smoked king salmon, charred sardines, and all the accompaniments. Yuzu marmalade? Yes, please.

TASTY BITES

But for Drew and Gretchen, it’s so much more. It’s the culture, the communal nature of sharing food—a table bustling with bites of extraordinarily persevered foods, hot sauce, raw honey, and the finest wines. In her role overseeing the wine and beverage programs at Barcelona Wine Bar’s eighteen locations (where she is also VP of Creative, working alongside Drew, Director of Brand Marketing), Gretchen has traveled to Spain over forty times in the past 15 years. In these travels, and through collaboration with Drew, they have infused their combined food and wine passions into their conserva culture-based website, where they showcase sauces and olive oils, as well as tableware, recipes, art, and inspiration. Because I adore emerging food finds, Drew and Gretchen introduced me to a few canneries in North America—Scout and Wildfish Cannery—that are taking the conserva world by storm. They put me into the learned hands of Matt Caputo. Matt is a food educator, CEO of Caputo’s Market & Deli, and the founder of A Priori Specialty Foods, a distribution company with a strong focus on conserva. “I’ve always found the best way to spread appreciation is through education. That is why we teach classes on the subject. When people are told the history, hear the stories, and learn that there are so many facets you can get geeky about, they listen intently,” Matt explained. “In every category I sell from cheese, charcuterie to craft chocolate, more connoisseurship goes hand in hand with more sustainability. Take the chocolate industry, for example. There is a ton of work left to do. But, in two decades, connoisseurs asking tough questions has shed light on some terrible practices, and the whole industry is scrambling to clean up their act.” 62 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

EVERYDAY CONSERVA

Entertaining aside, stocking your pantry with conserva is the recipe for meals from rustic to elegant. Tinned seafood— such as Scout’s Trout with Dill in Olive Oil—is bursting with protein and perfect for hiking, hunting, or any outdoor activities. If you’re curating a picnic menu, conserva is an easy, elegant answer. And from breakfast to dinner, gourmet meals are at-the-ready—from eggs benedict with lobster to ethereal pasta dishes. Connoisseur favorites? Of the many recipes on Conserva’s website, Gretchen offers quick Tomatoes, Clams & Garlic Naan with Lime Yogurt Sauce. Matt Caputo swears by Razor Clams with Hot Sauce (Espinaler is his favorite) on Potato Chips for easy snacks. For my money, nothing beats White Tuna Belly Fillets prepared as a tuna melt. As a self-diagnosed picnic addict and seafood lover—I’m hooked. A newly curated collection of luxurious tinned nibbles stands at the ready in my pantry. Won’t you join me? For more information on Conserva, visit conservaculture. com. Other websites to visit: caputos.com; enjoyscout.com; and wildfishcannery.com. •

The spectacular, sell-out 25th Anniversary Gala Performance of this acclaimed new production of the global stage sensation was described as “the most thrilling, soaring and emotionally stirring musical with magnificent performances” by the Daily Telegraph and “the greatest musical of all time” by the Daily Mail. THE LION In The Lion, writer/performer Benjamin Scheuer tells a story about love, loss, loyalty, and the redemptive power of music. This one-person musical is also a coming-of-age story, where a son seeks his father’s love and goes on a deeply personal journey to become his own man.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS ROSE Award-winning actress Dame Maureen Lipman stars in the leading role as Rose. This sharply drawn portrait of a feisty woman blends the personal with the political. It traces her story from the devastation of Nazi-ruled Europe to conquer the American dream.

Featuring the gorgeous music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin (including the classic hits “’S Wonderful” and “I Got Rhythm”), stunning designs, and show-stopping choreography. Jerry Mulligan is an American GI striving to succeed as a painter in a city suddenly bursting with hope and possibility. Quarantine - Quarantine Series, Acrylic & Pencil on Wood Panel, 30”x24" Painting by Don Hershman

DON HERSHMAN

A TRIBUTE TO PHOTOGRAPHER VICTOR ARIMONDI By Elizabeth Darwen

rtist Don Hershman is set to exhibit his latest collection of original pieces as part of a retrospective series inspired by the late Victor Arimondi. In the spring show, Donald and Victor: Under The Influence, the inventive artist will embody his visceral need to pursue interests and creative expressions as he pays loving tribute to his former partner, who succumbed to AIDS in 2001. Hershman’s paintings will recognize Arimondi’s work’s unique attributes, featuring a compassionate and reflective display of our modern times as we emerge from yet another pandemic. Born in 1954 and raised in New York City, Don received his BA in Pre-Med with a Psychology major from State University of New York at Buffalo and trained in Podiatry at the College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, where he established a private practice in the early 1980s. As the painter was building his medical practice, he was also evolving a body of artwork, exploring various media in drawings and paintings, and finding his voice as an artist. 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Don Hershman

CREATIVE ENDEAVORS In 1992, Hershman was personally invited by the Spectrum Gallery in San Francisco to participate in a group show. Selling his displayed collection, confidence was gained and sequentially inspired his future creative endeavors. He went on to great accolades, including the accomplishment of having a painting win in competition at the 2019 Jury Selection at the DeYoung Museum. Victor Arimondi was a famed Italian American model and art photographer whose unique eye and sensuous style captivated the world. At the time of his death, Hershman inherited his estate, including his vast collection of photography and art. “During our 17 years, Victor steadfastly guided and molded me. Then after his death in 2001, I became solidly dedicated to my art, his presence more powerful than ever. It’s a driving force to create something that is no longer a choice for me, but a necessity,” says Hershman. “Today, I’m an active part of the art community in San Francisco, and a patron of ART SPAN and mission artists.” In 2020 one of Hershman’s paintings won a jury selection at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. “This show at the Salomon Gallery brings mine and Victor’s work full circle with 20 new selected paintings from 2019 to 2021, along with a carefully curated selection of 38 photographs, taken between 1972 and 2001, four of which I interpreted into my paintings, Still Life, Archival Print, 8”x8” Photographs by Victor Arimondi called the D & V Series.”

FOCUS ON THE WORLD The upcoming exhibit will serve as a love letter to a luminary who graced the pages of fashion magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Esquire and appeared on the runway for many top designers, predominantly Valentino and Cerruti. Arimondi’s determination to turn the camera lens onto the world he saw before him led to famously shooting the likes of Grace Jones, Liv Ullman, and Norman Mailer, as well as several portraits of male nudes captured during the pre-AIDS culture of the early 1980s. He also notably focused imagery of the plight of the homeless of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood suffering during the height of the AIDS epidemic. In his words, “Since I posed in front of the camera for so many years, my experience with talented photographers made me realize a way to express my inner world.” In addition to the exhibit, there will be an Art Talk with guest speaker Adam Stoltman, a former New York Times and Time, Inc. photography editor, who will be in conversation with Hershman and share remarks on the legacy of Arimondi’s work.

“I first met Don a few years after Victor’s passing. One of the things that struck me was the degree to which Don was motivated. It was as if he was carrying a sacred trust, to preserveVictor’s work and legacy—a challenge for any surviving spouse of an artist,” states Stoltman. “It is fitting that Don and Victor are showing their work together through this exhibit. United as artists, continuing to hold that space, special energy, and love.” An opening reception will occur at Salomon Arts Gallery in Tribeca on May 13th from 6 to 9 pm. Space is limited, and the event will be carried out in strict adherence to all COVID protocols. The exhibit runs through June 3rd with viewings Wednesdays through Saturdays from 2 to 6 pm or by appointment.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

MVVO ART SHOW A RETURN TO THE OCULUS By Lillian Langtry

vVO ART announced the annual AD ART SHOW 2021’s return to the monumental screens inside the Oculus at the Westfield World Trade Center in New York on May 1st through 30th. Hosting the virtual opening at 4 pm on May 3rd will be guest artist Chad Smith—Red Hot Chili Peppers, Grammy Award-winning drummer, and fine artist—during Frieze week. Chad Smith’s artworks will be exhibited on the monumental screens of the Oculus the final weekend of May 29th and 30th. Maria van Vlodrop, MvVO ART’s founder and CEO, recently told us, “Chad Smith’s North American fine art tour, presented by Road Show Company, has been extraordinary. We’re honored to feature him as a guest artist of MvVO AD ART SHOW 2021 in partnership with NBCUniversal, our returning presenting sponsor. We are also excited that Chad supports AD ART SHOW and look forward to presenting his art alongside our talented artists.”

A BRIGHTER FUTURE Last year’s pandemic changed how people view things, their work habits, and their overall lifestyle. The AD ART SHOW was one of the few events to happen due to the all-digital format’s uniqueness. Last year was a success; this year looks to be more successful for the AD ART SHOW now that the Oculus will be filled with more downtown workers and tourists and will have more eyes on the artwork. The unique AD ART SHOW experience brings art directly to people—transforming an advertising platform into a gallery space in the middle of the iconic architectural achievement—the Oculus by Santiago Calatrava, all while revolutionizing the route that leads artists from underground buzz to recognition. The show launched in 2018 at Sotheby’s New York and moved to the all-digital platform at the Oculus in 2019. Now in its fourth year, AD ART SHOW continues to innovate and expand opportunities for artists. The artists of AD ART SHOW have a background in advertising/ design and related fields. They are following famous artists like Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte and Keith Haring who also had a commercial practice. Historically some artists have made the leap, but the barriers persist, and AD ART SHOW throws the doors open for these talented artists with direct connections to the art world. Additionally, AD ART SHOW provides organizations with an art platform to discover and celebrate their artists. While most of New York’s famous art institutions are reopening with limited capacity and timed ticketing, AD ART SHOW at the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center offers art lovers a spacious, free art destination. It will be open Mondays through Saturdays, 11 am to 7 pm; Sundays, noon – 6 pm. During May, AD ART SHOW visitors are offered a free sweet and a coffee from show partner Eataly, located on the third level. MvVO ART AD ART SHOW at the Oculus ©Teresa Pyskaty

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER

BRIAN KENNEDY, REGENCY OUTDOOR ADVERTISING By ElizaBeth Taylor

t has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. But what if that image is viewed hundreds of times a day by twice as many sets of eyes. The mathematical equation would equal an infinite number when it comes to an image found on a billboard. The words and photos shared across the grand landscapes of America carry a meaningful message, especially when it is on a billboard placement established by Regency Outdoor Advertising. FROM NYC TO LA Brian Kennedy, who founded Regency, has had a hand in establishing New York City’s Times Square as an iconic location for billboards and is innovating in a business with potential national ambitions. He’s seen the transition of his industry from physically hung signage to digital boards, which can change the image shown seven times per minute, 24 hours per day. The heritage of the Southern California business is full of landmark moments and historical significance. Regency Outdoor Advertising is more than just a billboard company. They are the achievers who make the dreams of clients a reality. 76 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Their fashionable skyline visuals are highly desired by patrons who seek out structures that carry a keen message to the public. Clear and thoughtful representation is a given with strategically placed Regency Outdoor Advertising. They are an iconic enterprise that produces content and helps provide optimal exposure for the brands that appear on their signs. Each billboard is like a specially placed work of art in a museum as the company believes in curating a client’s placement in a neighborhood that holds an ideal level of attraction. Working together, they create a seamless bond that captivates the eyes of consumers that are appropriate for the client’s needs and selling points.

MY NEW YORK STORY LYSS STERN, MOMPRENEUR By Bailey Beckett

or Lyss Stern, this one is personal. A well-known, parent-focused entrepreneur on the Upper East Side, the forty-something mother contracted COVID last spring and has spent the last year recovering from its effects. As a long hauler, she still suffers symptoms even though she’s technically recovered. Days are filled with exhaustion. Headaches. Longwindedness. And her sense of taste has still not returned. But rather than wallow in grief, Stern has used her experience as inspiration to start two new business ventures with roots in COVID. The first is a mask design set for children called Kadoodle Kids. Her latest is a gift box set for people still suffering from an illness called Chamama. “Contracting COVID was a life-changing experience, which I’m still experiencing,” said Stern. “It showed me how fragile life is. And not just health-wise, but how you live your day to day: routines, habits, obligations. Everything went out the window. There’s no aspect of my business and industry that hasn’t been affected.” 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2021

Lyss Stern

KADOODLE KIDS Not only was she suffering, but her three kids were too. Slave to phones, video games, computers, and television, children across the nation also dealt with social isolation and lethargy. Determined to shake things up, Stern and two friends—Pam Mandell and Jodi Okun—joined together to create Kadoodle Kids, a series of mask design sets for kids that provide a tactile, hands-on activity unplugged from technology. Box sets come with masks, markers, stamps, stickers, and other goodies to inspire out-of-the-box (literally!) thinking. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to put down their phones and gadgets and go back to playing,” said Stern, who also runs her marketing firm DivaMoms from her home. “Kadoodle Kids’ masks allow children to use their brains, creativity, fine motor skills, and express their emotions through decoration and design. Plus, as kids get more engrossed in playing with the kits, mom and dad get rest and peace of mind that their children are engaged in something meaningful.” Info: kadoodlekids.com/shop. Chamama box

CHAMAMA Her other venture, Chamama, is set to debut this spring. It’s a gift box rooted in health, wellness, and self-care. Each one includes such items as Wisdom Essentials’ Dream CBD oils and bath products, Declaré’s Skin Meditation Masks and Bath Soaks, Halodin’s antiseptic nose swabs and mouth rinse, Kusami’s fragrant teas, VitaFive’s gummy vitamins. These highly curated items bring a smile to the face of anyone battling illness pandemic—or not. Stern launched it with Liza Maltz, a New York City birth doula and founder of Have A Nanny (haveananny. com), who helped Stern take care of the family during her bout with COVID. “Chamama is a true passion project for me,” said Stern. “It was important for me to be able to bring some comfort and cheer those suffering from the virus.” And because of its popularity, brands have been lining up to have their products included. “We jumped at the chance to put Wisdom Essentials’ Dream Oil into Chamama NYC boxes,” said the brand’s founder Tom Lamb. “Our supplements are all natural and infused with CBD, which is known to help people with calm, focus, sleep, and relieve pain and anxiety. We know from working with Lyss and Liza those are their goals which makes including our Dream oil a perfect collaboration.” Adds co-founder Denis Keane: “Like Lyss, I suffered COVID last year, and we both still struggle with some of the symptoms as long haulers. Chamama NYC appealed to me instantly. These are incredibly thoughtful, curated gift sets. Wisdom Essentials’ Dream Oil is a perfect addition.” For Stern, these projects are more than businesses. “It’s an appreciation for community and the communal experience, and that’s what I’ve focused on my whole career. Bringing people together, sharing opinions, thoughts, suggestions, anecdotes, advice. Creating a network where we can enjoy the common experience. COVID showed us and the world we’re not alone. We’re in this together. I’ve always believed that when things get out of control, focus on something you can control. And if it doesn’t exist, create it.” Info: chamamanyc.myshopify.com. •

TIME OUT WITH…

FATIMA GUL, THE SINDHI FOUNDATION By Ann Grenier

ast month, the Sindhi Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. advocating for Sindhi human rights, organized a 350-mile march across five states on the East Coast to raise awareness on widespread human rights abuse and the climate crisis in Sindh, Pakistan. The Long Walk for Freedom, Nature, and Love began at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on April 7th and ended in Washington D.C. three weeks later. Their demands were many: to stop extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances of Sindhi Hindu and Christian girls in Pakistan. Every year in Sindh, thousands of females between 11 and 28 are abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and married off to their abductors. Sindhi people’s marginalization has gone on too long, and the Long Walk participants hoped to get the international media’s attention with their efforts. New York Lifestyles Magazine sat down with Sindhi-American Human Rights Activist, Fatima Gul, to discuss her background and The Long Walk’s importance.

Sindhi Foundation March

Where were you raised? I was born in a small village in Sindh. My village had a two-room schoolhouse. My earliest memory was when my father left me, at the age of four, at my uncle’s place in Karachi, in the hopes I would get a better education.
