Summer Days Are Here!
“Some of the best memories are made in flip-flops.” —Kellie Elmore
H
ere we are in the swing of summer and all its welcome changes. Our Summer Issue is no different. In this edition, we bring your favorites; like ice cream, water sports, Sauvignon Blanc, financial advice, and event photos with some of our local celebrities. To start the season off right, we toured the shore for some amazing bespoke ice cream. Since there were too many to mention, we decided to hit some high notes. In our travel feature, we head to Milan for some serious shopping and scenic relief on the shores of Lake Como Italy. And of course, summer wouldn’t be complete without some time on the water. In Surf’s Up, we introduce you to some of the local pros who provide safe instruction on paddle boarding and wave riding, and the gear that goes with it. Health Watch touches on something I have experimented with called Intermittent Fasting or Time Restrictive Feeding. Check out the health benefits of this interesting tweak in your lifestyle, it’s also a big timesaver… Another interesting topic we touch on is artificial grass in Home & Design. It’s not your parents’ fake grass, but we learn that it can still have the stigma of the old kelly green version we remember as Astroturf. And what would we be without Art and the buildings that house those works? Our Art feature, Awarded Museums, is a learning experience, and I’m thankful for Michael Cagno's help on that journey. Anyone who knows me knows I love a convertible. This issue we pull out the stops on a hard-to-get Mercedes AMG SL Roadster. But I have a feeling that if you ask our friends at Distinctive Car Toyz, they can do the work for you. Lastly, I want to invite you to a mixer for face-to-face time with fellow readers on July 28th to benefit the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC). Please scan the QR Code on the ad (pg. 50) or reach out to me directly. We would love to see you and introduce you to the MMSC if you are unfamiliar. With summer comes an increase in demand to help our ocean-dwelling friends and we would like to honor that, so please sign up.

ow more than ever, fashion is about making a statement — your own individual statement. “You are your perfect. We live in a world where everything is so uniform and filtered. And, thanks to social media we have become afraid to show our true self,” says Mòd Lauradin, creative director of the fashion brand SU. IVI. Lauradin’s brand launched two months ago and celebrates the uniqueness of each individual. SU. IVI. is a high-end, luxury brand that’s distinctly avantgarde. The line invites you to, “Be a kid again. Be effortlessly fearless. Whatever your aesthetic is, have fun with it. What I mean is, if you’ve ever watched a kid on the playground, they explore the unknown fearlessly and they have so much fun doing it,” Lauradin says. Fashion brands are also taking a look at their own footprint. As one of the most polluting industries in the world, fashion

houses like The Phoenix Brand want to see this change. “Everything we design is sustainable, in the truest definition. We only use natural, plant-based fabrics. We never use synthetic plastic-based fabrics or toxic finishes and dyes. Our cornerstone fabric is circular cotton, meaning that it is 100% recycled fabric from scraps left on the factory floor that are upcycled into new material,” says Trina Assur, co-founder of The Phoenix Brand. Consumers are also taking notice. According to a McKinsey survey, more than two-thirds of respondents consider sustainability before making a purchase and almost 90% of consumers want brands to be more eco-friendly. (McKinsey.com) Even some of the most wellknown luxury brands are taking notice of these trends. Gucci recently launched their “Off the Grid” sustainable collection. This collection is founded on circular production which aims to reintroduce and recycle materials into new ready-to-wear items. The leading trends in fashion are a direct reflection of this movement towards individualism and sustainability. Trend #1 — Sustainability. SU. IVI., The Phoenix Brand, and Gucci’s Off the Grid collection are designed to be sustainable fashion brands. SU. IVI. uses natural fabrics like luxurious organic cotton terry cloth and fine silks. The Phoenix Brand has built the entire foundation of their company around sustainability. “We want to dispel the myth that you can recycle plastic bottles into eco-friendly fashion, that just is not the case. Synthetic materials are one of the leading sources of plastic pollution in our ocean,” Assur says. Off the Grid uses recycled, organic, bio-based, and

sustainably-sourced materials. To be more eco-conscious, opt for natural, traceable, and sustainable materials. Many brands are taking notice, so there are plenty of sustainable options available in every style. Trend #2 — Unisex or androgenous styles. From Adidas to Balmain, The Phoenix Brand to SU. IVI. fashion lines are embracing androgyny. “It’s not about being feminine or masculine. It’s about creating a canvas that anyone can adapt to suit their individual style. It’s inclusive and allows individuality to shine,” Assur says. Gender neutral is one of the biggest trends showing on the runway right now. One of the first luxury brands to incorporate unisex designs is the luxury brand Telfar. This darling of high-fashion first began to incorporate androgenous designs in 2002, but has recently garnered a great deal of attention and won several CFDA fashion awards.

Trend #3 — High-end staples. This goes hand in hand with sustainability. Consumers are moving away from cheaply made, ‘fast-fashion’ and instead choosing high-end, luxury staples. Consumers are opting for quality over quantity. Pieces like a beautifully made pair of black shorts, a classic sweater, highquality cotton jeans are all staple pieces that can be worn in a wide variety of ways. Trend #4 – Functional fun. Adaptable accessories are a fun way to put a personal touch on your own fashion. Something like a scarf that can be worn as a choker, a headband, a bracelet, or more create flexibility and fun in your wardrobe. It also holds true to the movement towards sustainability. n

Artificial turf has been around for decades. Originally known as chemgrass, artificial grass became known as Astroturf in 1966 when the Houston Astrodome installed it. While artificial grass is nothing new, its technology has improved dramatically in recent years. Fairway Turf and Artificial
As an eco-friendly alternative, artificial grass comes with many benefits to you and the environment. “Artificial grass has been popular for many years in drought-prone climates. Billions of gallons of water are conserved annually. Vasallo says. Grass in Margate opened in 2020. “For 15 years, we were a traditional landscaping company. It became evident that artificial grass and its many benefits were quickly becoming an ecofriendly alternative to a natural lawn. As a result, Fairway Turf & Artificial Grass LLC was founded,” says Vincent Vassallo, co-founder of Fairway Turf and Artificial Grass. environment. “Artificial grass has been popular for many years in drought-prone climates. Billions of gallons of water are conserved annually. Eliminating the need to spray pesticides or other harmful chemicals keeps these toxins from polluting our water system.” Vasallo says. In addition to being ecofriendly, artificial turf has several other benefits. “Artificial grass reduces the chances of seasonal allergy symptoms, keeps the areas tick and mosquito-free, and prevents any muddy messes kids and pets track indoors. Being 100% child and pet safe as well as being more permeable than natural sod with virtually no maintenance, many homeowners are making the switch to artificial grass. People are quickly realizing these benefits far outweigh the upkeep and cost that comes with maintaining your lawn,” Vassallo says. Unlike natural grass which gets very muddy and is difficult to clean, artificial grass has better drainage that allows it to remain mess-free for pets. Simply scoop up after your pets, as you would on natural grass, hose off any residue periodically if needed, and your lawn remains clean. Fairway Turf and Artificial Grass also installs a wide variety of artificial lawns. “We specialize in various types of Artificial Grass Installations. Residential lawns, putting greens, pet turf, pool areas, playgrounds, sports courts, and much more! We install many custom-designed putting greens

We pride ourselves on knowing we’re giving our clients the best products on the market, ensuring them an always clean and forever green lawn for many years to come!” Vassallo says. However, before you decide to make the switch from natural to artificial grass, check with your local municipality. “Some South Jersey municipalities are operating under restrictive ordinances when it comes to artificial grass. They classify it as an impermeable surface, which is not accurate. Proper installation guarantees adequate drainage in addition to all of the aforementioned eco-friendly benefits. Our goal is to work with and educate these towns to update their understanding so that they will consider the many advantages artificial grass has to offer,” Vassallo says. Recently, an Atlantic County local, that wished to remain unnamed, contacted New Jersey Lifestyle magazine to share his experience. He submitted a permit to install a small section of artificial grass in his fenced-in backyard for his pets, which was unfortunately rejected. He says, “it’s very upsetting because there are so many benefits to having artificial grass for my pets. It was rejected for reasons that are just wrong and inaccurate. I’m going to appeal the decision, but it’s frustrating.” n

he Beach Boys have been telling us for decades that “Everybody’s gone surfin, surfin USA…” Although the song doesn’t specifically mention the Atlantic City area, the band may want to consider updating their lyrics. Locally, there are several surfing and paddleboard schools designed for beginners hoping to catch their first wave or experienced surfers looking to improve their technique. Primal Surf — Brigantine Their logo says it all, “From boards to bikinis, we’ve got you covered...” Owned and operated by Michael and Susan Laielli, Primal Surf in Brigantine has been a full-service surf shop since 2003. That means unique beachwear, jewelry, and sunglasses as well as state-of-the-art boards (surf and paddle) and beach cruiser e-bikes displayed in a warm mixed-wood custom interior. In addition to the shop, Michael Laielli and his hands-on team of qualified instructors, offer small group surfing lessons — a 3:1 student to instructor ratio. All students are provided quality soft surfboards and wetsuits during the 1 3/4-hour lesson. Laielli proudly explains his 20year proven philosophy on surf training, “Instruction is provided by myself and a team of experienced, professional instructors making the experience very personable and safe.” He also feels that Brigantine’s beaches, his surfing mecca, is a perfect location to learn how to surf in the Atlantic City area. Founded by Tom Forkin, former East Coast Champ, two-time NSSA National Team Member, and Atlantic City Beach Patrol member, AC Surf School offers surf and SUP lessons for children, teens, and adults — individually, in groups, or for special events. Forkin refers to surfing as “a sport you will love for life.” He is also adamant that learning how to surf and paddle is much easier when taught properly by expert instructors. For example, AC Surf uses the longer and wider soft boards for instruction because they are easier to stand on while working the upper body and core. I
have to admit I am on the fence with this one. While the intermittent fasting phenomenon is sweeping the globe, I am not sure if I am ready to jump on the bandwagon. Unlike traditional diets, intermittent fasting is more about when you eat, not what you eat. However, calling it a diet would be a misnomer, say devotees of intermittent fasting, also called time-restricted eating. Instead, they refer to it as an eating pattern. While most people become intermittent fasters to lose weight, proponents of this method say it is linked to various other benefits such as reduced risk or management of chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, higher energy levels, reduced inflammation, and improved brain function. I spoke with a renowned expert who has been studying intermittent fasting for more than 25 years. Mark Mattson, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and author of the Intermittent Fasting Revolution says fasting aligns with thousands of years of our biological history. When food was scarce thousands of years ago, people often went for many hours, even days, without a meal. He explains that when the body does not have carbohydrates or sugar to burn, it burns fat as energy in a process known as ketosis. However, fasting goes far beyond weight loss. In one of his first studies on humans, he analyzed the blood of 200 overweight women. Half of the group ate only 600 calories two consecutive days per week. The other half ate normally, but they reduced their calories by 20%. By the end of the six-month study, the two groups had consumed about the same number of calories and lost the same amount of weight. However, the IF group had a more significant reduction in abdominal fat and improved glucose regulation, an essential factor in diabetes management. Since then, there have been hundreds of studies involving intermittent fasting that can be found at clinicaltrials.gov. In my non-scientific analysis, I know three people who have been on the plan. My 61-year-old husband is an avid weightlifter who eats nutritiously and maintains a normal weight. He wanted to see what all the fuss was about. After six weeks on the program, he felt tired, hungry, and cranky. End of experiment. However, since time-restricted eating helped my friend end night-time grazing, she lost eight pounds in her first two months. She enjoys the simplicity of not keeping track of calories and says, “It forces me to think and plan my eating. It is also great to feel hungry once in a while. I almost forgot what it felt like.” Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Not sure

that would be mine! Finally, there’s my sister. I couldn’t stop laughing as she described shoving as much food into her belly while watching the clock tick down before the time expired on her “eating window.” It led her to eat more food! We always seem to want something when we cannot have it. That brings me to another point about IF. It is human nature for us to take everything to extremes. “Red wine is good for me? I will have three glasses. Coffee is fine? Let me fill my 32-ounce to-go cup. I am intermittent fasting; I can eat whatever I want.” So, I asked Mattson what an intermittent faster should eat? He recommended a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and fish instead of red meat. In essence, he described the Mediterranean diet. I am no scientist, but I will suggest that if people ate like that anyway, without the time restraints, they would lose weight and improve their health markers. However, it does make sense that people would tend to eat fewer calories in a time-restricted plan (unless you are my sister, and most likely, me). If you want to change how you eat, decide what plan makes sense in your life. Some people might do better by tracking their calories and eating regular meals. For others, intermittent fasting is the perfect option. The bottom line is that the eating plan that works is the one you can follow. Most Popular Intermittent Fasting Approaches: Alternate Day Fasting — Normal eating every other day, with days of restricted eating (500 calories) in between. Zero-calorie beverages such as water, coffee, and tea are allowed. 16:8 Plan — You eat regularly for eight hours and fast for 16 hours. You only actually fast for eight hours since you are sleeping for eight hours. 5:2 plan — involves normal eating five days a week but limiting yourself to 500 to 600 calories for two nonconsecutive days. n

ummer has finally arrived. That means it’s time to lower the roof of your convertible and enjoy the wind in your hair and the smells of nature as you tool along the open road. If you want to blend in with all the other traffic on the highways, stop reading now. But if part of your Fahrvergnügen is to be the envy of every driver you pass, the Mercedes AMG SL Roadster could be a perfect fit. It’s guaranteed to attract attention wherever you travel, from the Garden State Parkway to the Pacific Coast Highway. This grand touring sports car offers the best of all driving worlds — as long as you don’t have a big family and travel light. It is technically a four-seater, but the rear seats are suitable only for small children. Most experts suggest using them to hold cargo to supplement the puny 7.5 cubic-foot trunk (with the roof down).

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Or as John Pearly Huffman quipped in his Road & Track review: “They’re a place to throw a gym bag or let a dog lie down. What holds them back for passenger use is that most human beings come equipped with legs.” This car has a long history. It is a descendant of the 300SL Gullwing, which was built as a racing car — and a winning one at that — in 1952. Mercedes-Benz introduced it for public consumption starting in 1954. The seventh incarnation is new for the 2022 model year, and it is completely redesigned. The “Benz” was dropped from the name, as it now belongs to the Mercedes AMG division. This Roadster comes in two trims. The AMG SL55 and the AMG SL63. Both come with a handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo engine, ninespeed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The SL55 has 469 horsepower, and the SL63 is pulled by the equivalent of 577 ponies. Most reviewers suggest that since you’re already spending a pretty penny, spring for the more powerful trim. The official MSRP was not available when we went to press. But the SL55 is expected to start at about $135,000 and the SL63 at about $175,000. The AMG SL is assembled in Bremen, Germany. And trust us, this puppy can move. It goes from 0 to 60 in about 3.5 seconds. The top speed is 194 mph, but good luck finding a road in New Jersey where you can confirm that first-hand without attracting serious police attention. “It’s a big shift for a vehicle that spent decades as a relaxed and refined boulevard cruiser,” Brandon Turkus wrote for Motor1.com. “But in entrusting the folks from AMG with the SL, Mercedes has given one of its longest-running nameplates a new lease on life that also realigns it with iconic, high-performance ancestors.” The interior is Mercedes luxury at its finest. and provide heating, cooling, or a gentle massage as you desire. There is plenty of room for the driver and passengers. An 11.9-inch touchscreen almost rises from the center console, comes with the “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant, and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen even tilts to help avoid glare from the sun when the top is down. The fabric roof can be raised and lowered in about 15 seconds with the touch of a button, even when the car is in motion. A wind deflector covers the rear seats — assuming they are not in use — when the windows are up, and protects your hair from getting mussed. A standard “Airscarf” blows warm air on the occupants’ necks to allow for top-down driving in cooler weather. Most say the ride is a dream. “The SL63 handles like a far smaller, lighter car, changing directions and exhibiting cornering limits that would shame its predecessors,” Turkus wrote. “Every movement of the suspension feels precise and deliberate like the SL will never let me down,” and the gear shifting is almost undetectable. But a couple of other reviewers said the ride is a bit stiff, and it is hard to shift between driving modes to find your sweet spot. The exterior design is a classic sports car, with a long hood and a grille that dares you to challenge it. That, and the roar it makes on acceleration, ensure every other driver on the road will notice. The AMG SL has not been crash-tested for safety, and probably won’t be. But it is equipped with enough gizmos to protect the occupants, assuming the driver is awake and sober. Now comes the tough part: getting your mitts on one of these babies. It is not a popular vehicle, with only a couple thousand sold in the U.S. each year. That means you probably won’t find one on the dealer’s lot and will have to customorder it. Mercedes warns that a global semiconductor shortage could delay delivery. But it will be worth the wait. n

hopping in Milan is a fantasy come true — especially for fashionistas! To find the perfect style and fit, whether a luscious pair of Louboutin stilettos (for her) or a sleek Ferragamo racing watch (for him), is the ultimate shopping goal. Once you settle into your Milano surroundings, take in her celebrated sights: Duomo de Milano, Le Scala Theater, and savor an expresso in one of the many charming cafes. Then, shopping is a must — a glamorous, haute couture lover’s dream come true. So, grab your favorite credit card(s) to do a little shopping, and then a short ride out of Milan for the perfect dinner in the Lake Como area. Rectangle of Gold Milan undeniably remains one of the top fashion capitals of the world. In the heart of Italy’s second-largest city, four extravagant streets (vias) form a stylish rectangle housing Italian fashion empires ranging from Armani to Gucci to Versace. Accurately called the Quadrilatero d’Oro (Rectangle of Gold), Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni, Via Sant’Andrea and Via Montenapoleone make up the Quadrilatero della Moda shopping district. In addition to the Italian gods of fashion, shoppers can also see, smell, and touch (very carefully) high-end items from international fashion houses like Hermes and Dior. Hands down, Milan shopping is molto bene, but non-shoppers can enjoy the ambiance as well. The stylish streets, lined with elegant classic buildings, beg to be photographed. Architecture buffs will appreciate the mix of styles, from Neoclassicist to Baroque.

Billed as one of the top off-the-beaten-track flea markets in Europe, you can literally spend hours searching through each of the 150 plus vendors’ stalls for chic and shabby-chic treasures. You name it, and it is there — books, furniture, glass, pottery, and silk. Yes, the Cormano Flea Market is a wonderful place to find exquisite fabrics. The massive market is only open on Saturday from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM, so be an early bird if you plan to catch your special Milano worm! Mange! You shopped till you dropped, and now you are affamato — hungry. A 40-mile drive (or train ride) from Milan takes you to gorgeous Lake Coma with the snow-topped Alps as a backdrop. If George and Amal Clooney did not invite you to their lakeside villa, fear not. Lake Como offers a plethora of dining options to suit any palette (and any fine Italian leather wallet). Absecon resident, Sue Voci, absolutely loves the Lake Como area. Her “go-to” dining spot when visiting is Terrazza Metropole. Located near the

winding streets of Bellagio and perched on the lake, the views are nothing short of spectacular. Voci explains, “I have been to Terraza Metropole several times when we visit the Lake Como area. It’s a perfect setting for an easy meal like pizza and a bottle of wine or a more formal romantic dinner. Having a meal by the lake feels like I am in a fantasyland.” If you are a Michelin sealof-approval follower, Mistral is on the A-list. Located in the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, the restaurant overlooking the lake serves traditional Italian dishes inspired by one of Italy’s top chefs, Ettore Bocchia. For example, one of his innovative recipes is the Pike and Lacquered Eel (right from the lake) with rice cream vegetables and marinated trout eggs. For a pasta option, the homemade tortellini filled with peacock breast and fava beans is a signature dish at Mistral. Looking for lighter fare? The Peach Pit Pizzeria, a short walk from Duomo di Como, ranks multiple stars by Trip Advisor and other blogger reviews. Don’t expect fancy, but expect delicious take-out pizza — Napoletana style. What makes it Napoletana? Simple ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana cheese — no exceptions. In fact, the Peach Pit placed second in the 2019 Pizza World Championship. So, grab a slice and eat as you stroll the quaint streets, or find a bench near Lake Como to take in the majestic scenery while you have lunch. n

LifeStyle Wine
By Michael Bray
Discover Sauvignon Blanc W
e’re raising a glass to summer with one of our favorite wines for when the temperature rises and the grills start firing: Sauvignon Blanc. While some lower-quality wines with dull acidity and overripe fruit flavors have given this varietal a bad rap, well-made Sauvignon Blanc is among the best wine in the world. What is Sauvignon Blanc? Sauvignon Blanc is a green-skinned grape indigenous to France. While Sauvignon Blanc traditionally appears in blended wines from its home turf (as the main grape in dry whites from Bordeaux, and as a supporting player in sweet white wines such as Sauternes), this hardy grape is a world traveler that is produced as a single varietal wine in many of the best growing regions around the globe. What does it taste like? When considering the characteristic flavor profile of Sauvignon Blanc, remember its color. It’s a green-skinned grape that’s widely acknowledged for its green flavors: gooseberry, honeydew, lime, green apple, bell pepper, fresh herbs, and grass are all common Sauvignon Blanc tasting notes. In addition to these hallmark flavors, some Sauvignon Blanc wines exhibit impressions of passion fruit, peach, nectarine, and guava. The differences in flavor often come down to the ripeness of the fruit at the time of harvest, as well as the climate of the growing region. Grapes grown in cooler climates will often not ripen to the level

of grapes from warmer regions, and the resulting wines will have a firmer acid structure and more savory flavors. Where is it grown? As mentioned above, Sauvignon Blanc is grown in nearly every viticultural area in the world. I’ll use this space to highlight some of my favorite regions, but this list is by no means exhaustive. France’s Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc is often blended with other grapes in wines from France’s famed Bordeaux region, but in the Loire, Sauvignon Blanc is the star. The cool climate of the Loire Valley offers optimal growing conditions for this grape. You can expect these wines to boast a bright acidity, refreshing minerality, and wellintegrated citrus fruit flavors. My Pick from the Loire: Karine Lauverjat Sancerre 2020 Located on the left bank of the Loire River, Sancerre is a distinguished subregion within the Loire Valley. Husband and wife team Christian and Karine Lauverjat produce their Sancerre from 30-year-old Sauvignon Blanc vines, and the resulting wines embody the heritage and elegance of the region. Bright aromas and flavors of white flowers and citrus fruit are supported by smooth mineral tones and balanced acidity. California’s Napa Valley While Napa Valley is best known for its distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, this renowned region produces Sauvignon Blanc wines of equal pedigree and complexity. Many top Napa producers seek to embody the elegance of the Loire in their Sauvignon Blancs, within a considerably warmer growing region. Napa Sauvignon Blancs will typically exhibit bolder fruit impressions (think stone fruit like peach and tropical fruit like guava and pineapple), while maintaining the finesse of their French cousins.
My Pick from Napa: CADE Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2020 This bright wine from one of Napa’s best producers features bold aromas of green apple, peach, and orange blossom. The palate brings citrus and tropical impressions of pineapple and mango, balanced by a refreshing acidity. New Zealand’s Marlborough region Sauvignon Blanc put New Zealand on the map as a top wine-producing region. The grape thrives in the cool climate of Marlborough, located on the northern part of New Zealand’s south island. A long, consistent growing season allows Sauvignon Blanc grapes to ripen beautifully, with the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. My Pick from Marlborough: Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2021 This delicious vintage from one of Marlborough’s first wineries opens with aromas of passion fruit, peach, and lime. The palate offers nectarine, citrus acidity, and a smooth finish. What about food pairings? Sauvignon Blanc shines as a partner to creamy cheeses like goat cheese and burrata, and its herbal notes make it a good match for meals accented with basil, rosemary, and cilantro. It is also one of the few wines that pairs well with vegetable-based dishes, like salads, asparagus, and artichoke. I hope this overview of Sauvignon Blanc piqued your interest around this distinctive and long-lived varietal. Should you have any questions about Sauvignon Blanc, or any other grape, email me any time at Michael@passionvines.com. n

hen Dan the Music Man takes his place behind the piano, the magic begins at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC). It starts with smiles, then toe taps. Some residents sway and others sing. The nursing staff moves just a bit closer, finding reasons to be nearby. Since 2016, the Schultz-Hill Foundation has been supporting music and arts programs at SGLC, a nonprofit home for the aged in Galloway. Dan the Music Man, aka professional musician Dan D’Angio, is part of the most recent Music & Memory program at SGLC, a therapeutic program designed for residents with dementia, which now includes live piano concerts twice a week. “Music is truly magic for our seniors,” said Sharon D’Angio, Director of Donor Services and PR at SGLC. “It has the ability to transport them to another place. It brightens their day in a really meaningful way that is also mentally therapeutic. For days after, they’re calmer and happier; they eat and sleep better. This is so important for them yet we would not be able to do this without the support of our donors, such as our board members Sharon Harris-Zlotnick and Steve Chang, and foundations like Schultz-Hill.” The Music and Memory program is one of the hundreds of programs that the Schultz-Hill Foundation has supported over its 20-year history. Founded in 2002, the Foundation’s mission is to promote and support the arts, history, and education in South Jersey. Schultz-Hill has provided funding for educational scholarships, arts outreach programs for youth, music programs for seniors, direct grants for arts, historical and musical programs, and more. It's a mission close to the hearts of founders Gary Hill and John Schultz. “With the Arts, we have expression, with history we have knowledge, and together we have our future,” they note. “We’re able to give back because of the incredible support that we receive. We’re very proud of our diverse corporate and individual support of sponsors that make this possible.” Each year, the Schultz-Hill Foundation organizes one benefit performance annually. The proceeds support the remainder of their year-long arts outreach programs for students, seniors, and the community. This year’s benefit features headliner Melissa Manchester, performing along with one of Schultz-Hill’s community arts partners, the Bay Atlantic Symphony. An Evening with Melissa Manchester Featuring the Bay Atlantic Symphony, Superstar Theater at Resorts Casino Hotel, Friday, August 5, 2022, 8:30 pm Join the Schultz-Hill Foundation for an evening to remember with award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester. Melissa is celebrating nearly 50 years in music, film, theatre, and television. An acclaimed songwriter, her musical pop standards have stood the test of time. Melissa won a Grammy in 1982 for “You Should Hear How She Talks About You” and is known for her diversity of musical styles with hits like “Midnight Blue,” “Don’t Cry Out Loud” and “Whenever I Call You Friend.” She has starred in the national touring companies of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” and “Song and Dance” and she played the title character’s mother on NBC TV’s hit series “Blossom.” Melissa was inducted into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame in 2021. Performing with Melissa will be the Bay Atlantic Symphony, a performance and education organization with an artistic vision driven by the philosophy that music is essential to life. The Symphony provides access to excellence in performance and music education that enhances the musicians, presenters, participants, and community. “The music that we play, whatever genre, is just top-notch music,” said Jed Gaylin, musical director for the Bay Atlantic Symphony. “I’d like to think that we offer exciting interpretations of it, and of course the musicians are firstrate, but when you start off with excellent material, time-tested material, it gives expression to any and all facets of a human soul. Melissa’s music is so lyrical; it just touches your heart. I think it’s Victor Hugo who said, ‘when words stop, that’s where music begins.’” Resorts Casino Hotel is a presenting sponsor of the event. Limited $175-per-person VIP tickets include VIP Seating and a tax-deductible post-show “meet and greet” champagne/dessert party with Melissa Manchester, and may be purchased online at www.schultz-hill.org. General admission seating tickets are $35; preferred seating tickets are $50. Both are available through Ticketmaster or at the Resorts box office. n

Willow's Way in Ventnor
n 2020, the United States churned out over 1 billion gallons of ice cream. That’s a heck of a lot of cones, cups, shakes, and splits full of yummy frozen goodness! One scoop or two? Custard swirl or gelato? Cherry vanilla or chocolate chip? These are only a few questions you need to answer before hunting down the perfect ice cream. In the Atlantic City area, you have many options, luckily, to partake in ice cream. Willow’s Way — Ventnor, NJ They may be new to the local ice cream scene, but the family-owned business has quickly been added to the list of sweet options — like a cherry on top. From Spicy Gelati to Black Raspberry Truffle, the smallbatch items are carefully crafted the Willow’s Way way — quality ingredients resulting in handmade ice cream and ices. In addition to the ingredients, Ralph Papas, owner, elaborates on the Willow’s Way philosophy by collaborating with other local food establishments, “With us being homemade, small-batch, it is fairly easy for us to incorporate other eatery’s items, whether it be drinks from their menu that we turn into water ice or baked goods we add into our ice cream. These collaborations showcase their craft to our customers as well as vice versa in an organic, local and positive relationship.” Signature: Blue Dream — Cookie dough in cookies ‘n cream ice cream naturally colored with blue matcha. Lindy Hops — Galloway, NJ Since opening its doors in 1991, Lindy Hops has been happily serving the community with its
homemade ice cream. The shop, decked out in 1950s-themed art and music, offers 32 flavors of hard ice cream — made fresh. What’s the ice cream philosophy at Lindy’s Hop? Obviously, it thrives to make “good, quality ice cream that makes everyone’s favorite sweet more enjoyable.” In addition, Lindy Hops stands out because of its quality ingredients and homemade ice cream that they feel is unlike anything else in the area. That, paired with the experience of stepping back into the 1950s, has made Lindy Hops a true staple in South Jersey for over 30 years! Signature: Mississippi Mud — Chocolate coffee ice cream with walnuts, Oreos, and dark chocolate flakes SunDaze — Ventnor SunDaze offers a complete assortment of fun products including 42 flavors of handdipped ice cream, soft-serve frozen yogurt, and 32 flavors of water ice — made on the premises using an “old-time family recipe.” This summer, the shop added vegan soft serve to its menu — soy, nut, gluten, and lactose-free. Owned and loved by Rory and Joe Schafer, the ice cream duo serves something for everyone. Schaffer explains, “When you complete your choice with over 50 toppings available, we are certain that our customers will be satisfied and return for more! That is why SunDaze is the premier soft ice cream, frozen yogurt, water ice, and hand-dipped ice cream establishment serving all of Downbeach.” Signature: Chocolate Peanut Butter Water Ice

THE STOCK MARKET DECLINE Wondering if you should sell?
2
022 is off to a rocky start for investing with the S&P 500 index down over 20% at one point from its peak. Tech stocks have been hit particularly hard with the average NASDAQ stock down 50% from its high. With the consistent decline in the stock market this year, you may be asking yourself, should I sell my investments now before they go lower? Looking at past market declines to see how you would have fared while trying to limit losses by selling can lead you to realize that this strategy is not the best course of action for your nest egg. Can’t I sell when the market starts to fall, avoid some of the losses, and then get back in later when it all seems clear? Human behaviors’ basic desire to avoid loss makes this one seem like it makes all the sense in the world. The problem is it is dead wrong. It is probably the single biggest contributor to investors’ failure to achieve returns anywhere near what the market returns in the same period. The reason is simple: it involves market timing, which no investor, institutional or otherwise, has been able to consistently get right. Many investors sell once they see the market start to correct but where they invariably fail is almost always staying out of the market too long. Timing requires guessing right twice, first, you have to guess when the market is going to fall (or continue to fall) and then you have to guess when the market is done falling and get back in. There are so many factors that affect the stock market, and the direction of the stock market in the short run, that it is almost impossible to accurately predict its next move, let alone predict accurately twice in a row. If you don’t predict accurately, your return could be greatly affected. For example, if you were fully invested in the S&P 500 from 2007 to 2022, you would have received an annual return of 10.66%. However, if you traded out of the S&P 500 and this resulted in you missing just the ten best days during the same period, your annualized returns would have dropped all the way down to 5.05%! Volatility works both ways and often the best days in the stock market follow the worst days.
Being out of the market for any length of time, as you can see, can greatly reduce your return. Remain in the Market for Long-term Success The good news is you don’t have to guess when to be in or out of the market. All you have to do to be a successful stock investor, which we define as someone who receives market returns over time, is to diversify and not sell when the market is correcting or declining. The time period listed above included the great recession, the drawdown from the global pandemic in 2020, and the return for simply remaining invested was still over 10%. In fact, if you look at stocks over any long-term time period, the return is always right around 10% annually. So as long as the money you have invested is for long-term investing, such as for retirement, you simply need to accept that you will have volatility along the way and remain invested so that you can realize your rate of return in the long run. As you get closer to retirement, if you decide you want to reduce your overall equity exposure permanently, do it when the market is doing well, not when it is selling off. You want to sell from a position of strength, not a position of weakness. Many need to invest a significant amount of their portfolio in stocks in order to grow their nest egg to one day achieve a comfortable retirement. That being said, volatility will always come with stock market investing. While long-term stock returns can help you to grow your assets, you have to accept that volatility is normal and comes with this investment. This volatility is the price you pay for higher returns than the stock market gives you. A disciplined investor will maintain a long-term perspective and not focus on day-to-day market moves. n Matthew Reynolds, CPA, CFP® Robert T. Martin, CFA, CFP® Jeffrey Hilliard, CFP®, CRPC®
