NAVIGATOR FALL 2023 12
Proud to be part of the MarineMax family

Early in the day it was whispered that we should sail in a boat, only thou and I, and never a soul in the world would know of this our pilgrimage, to no country and to no end. So wrote the 19th century Bengali poet Tagore in his poem Sail Away. As you read this in September, I hope it is with the recollection of lazy days and the smell of sunscreen still lingering in the air, memories of summer 2023 and your own “pilgrimage to no country and no end.” Because even if there are some great things about the other seasons, it is just a fact that at Northrop & Johnson, we and our clients all love the summer. The need for lighter clothes, the longer days, the warm evenings spent in the company of friends and family, some spectacular sunsets seen from on board a yacht with a drink in hand, and maybe even seeing one or two sunrises, if we all forget how old we are and just live in the moment and worry about the consequences later. These are the ingredients a summer of yachting is really made of and why yacht charter and ownership continue to grow year after year. But now the summer is over and it’s time to think about the upcoming winter season. Where will you be this Christmas? Will it be at home or will you decide that this is the year to take the family on a Caribbean or Indian Ocean yacht charter? Or maybe you will do both and have Christmas at home and celebrate New Years away?

In this bumper issue, we have some great ideas for winter charter destinations, and interviews with one or two of the shipyards currently benefiting from a booming new build sector. We talk to the analysts in our new “Deep Data” team about the trends they see coming to the yachting industry and how they put our brokers in the best position to advise our clients. We look ahead to the fall boat show season, suggest some new toys you can buy for your yacht, spotlight the iconic yacht UNBRIDLED (available for charter and sale), talk about the tried-and-tested cruising grounds attracting a new generation of yachties, and, of course, all of the usual culture and travel content you’ve come to expect.

So don’t put that sunscreen away just yet. Instead talk to your sales or charter broker, book that winter charter or trip on your yacht and go create some memories to accompany the summer ones.

NEW BUILD Navigator

Knows

With the leading shipyards’ order books full until 2026/2027 – and in some cases 2028 – it seems that the strength and resilience of demand for the new build market continues at pace. Navigator talks to a number of leading experts from the industry on how buyers’ interests and demands are fueling a burgeoning new construction sector

KEEL LIFE NAVIGATOR KNOWS 24
01 Baglietto’s 125’ (38m) ENTERPRISE 02 Numarine’s 26XP 01
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

THE EXPERTS

Why such demand in the new-build sector?

CEO & Founder, Numarine

Numarine’s experience creating vessels to withstand whatever the oceans throw at them has made it the perfect builder for superyacht owners looking to invest in the flourishing explorer yacht arena. Enter Numarine’s XP models. The first explorer model, the 32XP was launched in 2017, followed by the 26XP in 2018, the 37XP in 2021 and 22XP in 2022. Today, the shipyard has seven variations on the XP line, ranging from the 22XP right up to a 45XP. As CEO and Founder of Numarine, Ömer has a comprehensive knowledge of the superyacht industry, having turned his passion for cruising into what is today one of the most successful shipyards in the world.

Cromwell Littlejohn

Chief Commercial Officer, Northrop & Johnson

Working with all commercial divisions across the company, Crom has an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the yachting industry garnered throughout his many years in the business. Having worked as a captain before turning his hat to brokerage, Crom went on to oversee commercial operations in the sales and retail charter sector. He has an in-depth knowledge of the brokerage market and new-build sector that has helped put Northrop & Johnson in the top tier of brokerage houses.

Fabio Ermetto

Chief Commercial Officer, Baglietto

Fabio Ermetto is a widely recognized and esteemed professional in the yachting industry. Having held senior strategic positions around the world, both in major companies and brokerage houses, Fabio has developed a high knowledge of the yachting business. As a qualified engineer, he has an in-depth knowledge of the product and has been able to adapt Baglietto’s offerings in response to market demands.

Cromwell Simply put, the increase in new builds, and in yacht sales as a whole, correlates with the increased wealth of the population. Added to this, the recent pandemic made people value time and live in the moment, bringing in more and more new clients to the market. The increased demand has resulted in a lower inventory of yachts afloat and therefore the need to build more.

Ömer We have all had time to consider what we value the most, which for the majority has been time with family and friends. Where better to enjoy family time than in the private space of a superyacht with the freedom to explore the world? Many new and existing clients have also realized that their work commitments can be more flexible, allowing them to work remotely from anywhere in the world. This has encouraged new owners to enter the yachting arena, while existing owners have upgraded their yachts to allow them to spend more time on board.

Fabio Obviously, the pandemic has had a great influence on the demand that we are seeing today. It changed the way people consider life on board: a yacht is not only related to periods of vacation, it has become a way of life. Owners and charterers now place even more importance on privacy and safety. They also recognize that working remotely is far more acceptable, even while on board. A yacht is now seen as a second home, and for these reasons yacht layouts have greatly changed in recent years.

KEEL LIFE NAVIGATOR KNOWS 25
02

How have you adapted to changing demands and trends?

Cromwell The entire industry has seen a significant shift toward sustainability, with many of our owners making efforts to be greener. This filters through to the new build sector, where we have seen owners prioritizing comfort at sea over speed. We have also seen more demand from new build clients for yachts with beach clubs and a connection to the sea.

Ömer In 2016, we analyzed that the trend was going toward explorer yachts. This is why we built our first 32XP. In 2021 we decided to use our experience to build only explorer yachts and therefore abandoned our flybridge and hardtop series. With this decision, we expanded our range from 72’ (22m) to 150’ (45m). Today, sustainability is one of the most significant demands from our clients. Numarine’s explorer yacht hull designs and their reduced speed give us the ability to reduce fuel consumption. We launched the 26XP with solar panels, enabling a significant reduction in generator power and therefore reducing fuel consumption and noise and vibration pollution in the oceans. For a bigger step concerning this issue, we announced that we will be launching our first diesel-electric yacht with solar panels in the summer of 2024. Our aim is to be one of the most sustainable yacht builders in the world.

Fabio The shift in clients’ attitudes and the way they want to spend their time onboard has had an implication on the layout of our yachts. The majority require more deck space and greater volume. They also desire more contact with the sea, while their concern for the environment has also increased. We have studied all manner of sustainable solutions and all the Baglietto yachts now come with the possibility of hybrid propulsion. Soon we will be able to also offer hydrogen propulsion on our larger yachts and we have built a 1:1 real prototype of our Bzero system.

What do you believe clients are looking for today?

Cromwell The industry has seen an increased demand for explorer yachts and multi-hulled vessels, as well as continued interest in semi-custom yachts.

Ömer Certainly, records show that one of the fastest growing build categories is the explorer yacht segment. This is why we decided to concentrate on this area with the development of our XP models. 2022 saw an increase of more than 30 percent of explorer yachts on order compared to the previous year, and over 50 percent on the previous year’s average. The uptick in the popularity of explorer yachts is simple – clients can work remotely, spend more time onboard, and explore further afield.

Fabio The idea of a “home-away-from-home” lies at the core of our new DOM 133 line, hulls #10252 and #10249, both of which are in build for Northrop & Johnson clients. DOM stands for Domus, meaning “home” in Latin, and this series of midsize aluminum cruisers are modeled around the functional and lifestyle needs of modern yacht owners.

Cromwell We have also seen more interest in sailing yachts

designed for cruising. The numbers show that the demand for this sector has marginally increased, but given that the new build sailing market only represents a small fraction of the overall market (approximately six percent), a marginal increase is significant. Perhaps this is in part down to the simple fact that sailing yachts are perceived as being better for the environment. There are a handful of sailing yacht builders that have reacted to client demands for sailing yachts with the same amenities as a motor yacht, with balconies and beach clubs now being incorporated into their designs. Additionally, owners are looking for options that provide a true connection to the sea and their surroundings. We are no longer content to just be “on” the water, but to be fully immersed in the sea and our surroundings.

How have prices been affected due to the rise in production costs worldwide?

Cromwell Increased demand and supply chain delays has resulted in a steady increase in both brokerage and new-build sectors. Many builders have increased their facilities and capacity to keep up with demand, and those investments have also resulted in cost increases. However, the market remains strong, as has resale values in the late-model semi-custom and custom yacht sectors.

Ömer Over the past few years, we have seen a significant increase in the cost of raw materials and components, with supply chain issues affecting production costs. However, the price of materials has begun to stabilize, therefore reducing build costs that will be passed on to the owners.

Fabio Higher costs of raw materials and manpower certainly had an impact on production costs. Added to this is the current situation in which we find ourselves today with delays in delivery affecting yacht builds.

How much of your construction is in-house versus subcontracted?

Ömer We have the knowledge and experience to build everything from furniture to glass, as well as stainless steel, with a team of over 300 employees. We do, however, appreciate the craftsmanship of professionals in their area, and we only work with brands or suppliers that not only add value to a build, but use only the best materials.

Which emerging markets do you see clients coming from?

Ömer Numarine’s biggest markets are the U.S. and Europe. We can easily say that our production line is 50 percent U.S. clients and 30 percent European clients. Right now, the 37XP is the most popular model for Numarine, and we predict that the 40XP will become popular, thanks to the trend for outdoor living areas. The 40XP is an evolution in size of the 37XP, allowing for more open spaces and a larger beach club.

Fabio At Baglietto, we are exploring the Asia Pacific area and just this year we opened a representative office in Australia, as well as in Santo Domingo and Brazil. More will follow.

Northrop & Johnson’s Deep Data Department does exactly what it says – provide detailed and comprehensive data on yachts and trends. Comprised of a team recruited for their passion for data and analysis, this department has a clear vision for how data can transform company strategy and is dedicated to providing the commercial teams with in-depth data knowledge that gives them a competitive advantage. Data within the yachting industry is confidential and as such can sometimes be hard to obtain and is often misleading. By securing and verifying data, Northrop & Johnson brokers are able to communicate with their clients with absolute confidence and provide detailed information on pricing, history and other relevant information on any specific yacht. Added to this, the Deep Data Department provides information on competitors, sales, new listings and various other key industry data to give brokers,

and in turn their clients, a comprehensive understanding on market trends and forecasting for the future. The Deep Data Department provides brokers with information on shipyard availabilities – either spec builds or potential new builds coming up for sale and new build slots and concepts of interest, thus allowing a broker to identify possible opportunities for a client.

The Deep Data Department also keeps abreast of charter trends and provides data to both the charter managers and charter retail department on trends in cruising grounds and potential revenues for charter yachts to help advise owners. And finally, the Deep Data Department keeps other yachting industry players up to date on Northrop & Johnson’s sales and charter fleet, ensuring that all significant information is circulated to relevant parties.

NORTHROP & JOHNSON DEEP
DATA

What do you see as being the biggest challenges for the new-build sector and the industry as a whole in the future?

Cromwell Preservation of the very environment in which we operate. At Northrop & Johnson, we are committed to protecting the oceans on which we – and the entire superyacht industry – solely depend. There is simply no escaping from the fact that a superyacht can affect the ocean and it is our responsibility to minimize this impact. The environment is, and must be, the top priority for everyone in the yachting industry and green technology and alternative fuels have become the biggest sector for innovation.

Fabio We continue investing in technology and research of sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Indeed, the new DOM 133 line will be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that combines traditional diesel engines, e-motors and batteries depending on operational needs to reduce consumption and environmental impact. The range with diesel-electric mode can reach up to 690 nautical miles and the yacht can stay up to 10 hours at anchor on batteries alone.

Ömer The biggest challenge is to keep developing new technologies onboard. We constantly strive to meet our clients’ demands with research and development, even for the existing Numarine models. The 30XP will be another milestone for Numarine. As the first hybrid propulsion yacht built by Numarine, we believe that the technology used in the 30XP will be a reference point for new models.

What do you believe is the reason for the shipyard’s longstanding success?

Ömer We always listen to feedback from our clients and the captains on board the Numarine fleet, giving us a better understanding of the changing needs of owners and incorporating them in newer models. Our vision is to create a company that

delivers on the mission that we set right at the start of Numarine – to constantly research and deliver what our clients want.

Fabio I think there are many reasons for Baglietto’s continued success. First and foremost is the Baglietto heritage, which, along with the quality of our builds and the shipyard’s reputation ensures our success. The Baglietto business model is also a successful one: a boutique shipyard – an atelier where the client can choose their preferred dress. We build in small quantities and this permits us to have a simple organization with clients at the center.

How difficult has it been to secure new-build slots in recent years?

Cromwell As mentioned previously, a decline in brokerage inventory has had a knock-on effect to the new-build sector and so it has been a lot harder to secure build slots. We have seen that many clients want a yacht as soon as possible, and don’t want to wait for the three- to four-year build period. Many of the shipyards have reacted to this by building yachts on spec in the knowledge that buyers will come in at some stage in the build. With the knowledge from our Deep Data Department, our teams are able to monitor all current builds and as a result, we have been abreast of any developments on yachts that might have gone into default or had contractual difficulties. Our clients are pretty proactive and responsive and so when an opportunity comes up, we are able to act promptly. As a result we have secured slots at both Baglietto and Numarine and have a number of yachts under construction at various shipyards, including Benetti, Overmarine and Heesen Yachts, to name just a few.

Ömer Our order books have been full since 2020 and our current orders will take us through to 2025. We also built a couple of the XP models on spec – the 22XP and 26XP – and to date this has proven successful as both sold before their launch.

A fragmented jigsaw of islands in the northern Caribbean, the British Virgin Islands have long been a yachtsman’s haven. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, throughout the centuries, the archipelago has attracted all manner of seafarers –from pirates to opportunist Europeans – but today, they attract a more sophisticated crowd. Lying at the center of the archipelago, the most popular cruising area is the scenic Sir Francis Drake channel. Surrounded by picturesque hilly green islands and islets, many uninhabited, the channel offers sailors steady easterly tradewinds and an abundance of sheltered anchorages.

The islands are a canvas of natural beauty leavened with an enticing mix of old-world charm and luxury resorts to lure travelers ashore. The must-visit spots include the largest island in the BVI chain, Tortola, the beach party island of Jost Van Dyke, the brush island of Anegada, and the BVI’s home of watersports, Virgin Gorda. In between these lie many more compelling isles – Norman Island, Salt Island and Cooper Island, to name just a few. Their appeal is quite simple: miles of sparkling sandy beaches, unparalleled dive sites and a constant gentle breeze. Let your Northrop & Johnson charter expert steer you to some of the finest ports and anchorages in the Caribbean with a charter through the British Virgin Islands.

LOUIS Xlll

A limited edition RARE CASK 42.1

Earlier this year LOUIS XIII launched their limited-edition cognac RARE CASK 42.1, named after an unexpected 42.1 percent ABV. LOUIS XIII's third Rare Cask limited edition follows the premiere of RARE CASK 42.6, which launched a decade ago. LOUIS XIII’s Cellar Master, Baptiste Loiseau, discovered a single tierçon containing a particularly aromatic profile in the cellars of Domaine du Grollet, the home of the LOUIS XIII Legacy. The tiercon that created the exceptional cognac’s aromatic profile comes from French oak trees that take over 100 years to reach maturity, containing precious eaux-de-vie sourced from Grande Champagne's terroir. When kept undisturbed, the eau-de-vie evolves as the liquid deepens with intensity and mahogany hues, giving RARE CASK 42.1 its unique complexity. "While the singularity of a RARE CASK rests on the wonder of nature and the aging of eaux-de-vie, the know-how that it requires to produce is an art form, passed on from generation to generation, where each Cellar Master perpetuates the gestures of his predecessors," shares Baptiste Loiseau.

Only 775 limited edition RARE CASK 42.1 decanters will be available globally. To complement this exclusivity, each decanter is crafted from black Baccarat crystal. This decanter requires a combination of art and savoir-faire to achieve its jewel-like black finish, hand-made by 20 master craftsmen working meticulously in unison. Each decanter's neck is then dressed in gold and rhodium finished details and finely engraved with quadrilobed patterns in reference to France's Fleur-de-lys. RARE CASK 42.1 is the first Rare Cask edition from LOUIS XIII to be presented as a ritual set. The decanter is accompanied by a pair of glasses adorned with black quatrefoils, and a serving pipette that features a black medallion.

The LOUIS XIII Rare Cask Collection began in 2009 with the launch of RARE CASK 43.8, followed by RARE CASK 42.6 in 2013. For the third time in history, in an unexpected departure from the ordinary passage of time, RARE CASK 42.1 reveals itself to the world as a wonder of nature and time.

LUX LIFE FLIGHT DECK 62 flight deck FLAGSHIP FLEET Private Jet Card Comparisons Founder and Editor discusses the newest fractional private jet options WORDS DOUG GOLLAN 01 Cessna Citation Longitude 02 Cessna Citation Ascend 03 Cessna Citation Latitude 04 Airbus ACJ TwoTwenty 02 03 04 01

Fractional aircraft buyers are going to have more choices now and in the coming years as providers tap new models and manufacturers and more companies enter the shared ownership model. While fractional ownership requires buying a slice of a specific airplane and generally a five-year commitment (you can exit earlier with penalties), programs typically have fewer peak days than comparable jet card programs and shorter notice periods to book your flights. Fractional ownership also gives guaranteed availability and fixed hourly rates applicable within your primary service area. That means you don’t have to pay for repositioning the aircraft before or after your flight – you only pay for occupied hours, i.e. the time you are flying in the airplane.

NetJets

The world’s largest private jet operator, NetJets, is tapping Embraer to add up to 250 Praetor 500 midsize jets to its fleet in a deal worth over $5 billion. They already have over 100 of the Brazilian OEM’s top-selling Phenom 300 light jets. The Praetors fit nicely between Textron’s Citation Latitude and Longitude in the NetJets lineup. It’s a best-seller for rival Flexjet and has received consistent critical acclaim. Business Jet Traveler writes, “There simply is no other airplane in the 500’s price range that gives you a true wide stand-up, flat-floor cabin with all the latest luxuries, a cavernous luggage hold, smooth and full fly-by-wire digital flight controls mated to glass-panel avionics, superb short-field capability and transcontinental range.” The first Praetor is expected to be delivered to NetJets in 2025. However, that’s not it for the unit of Berkshire Hathaway. It’s also the launch fleet customer for Bombardier’s Global 8000.

flyExclusive and Fly Alliance

Fans of Textron’s Cessna Citation lineup have two new fractional options, with deliveries starting this year. Fly Alliance and flyExclusive are the 18th and 5th largest U.S. operators based on charter and fractional flight hours, respectively, according to Private Jet Card Comparisons/Argus TRAQPak data. Fly Alliance has purchased 12 Cessna Citation XLS+ Gen 2s, six Citation Latitudes and two Citation Longitudes. flyExclusive so far has placed two orders with Textron. The first was for up to 30 Citation CJ3+ light jets and it expects to take delivery of five in 2023. Last October, it added eight Citation XLS Gen2 aircraft with deliveries starting in 2024, and up to six Longitudes, with initial deliveries of the first two Longitudes in 2025. With Textron’s introduction of the Ascend as a follow-up to the XLS, expect some news on conversions to the type, which will feature a flat cabin floor. In its investor presentation ahead of its planned

IPO, Kinston, North Carolina-based flyExclusive said it expects to have 46 fractional airplanes by 2026, with 21 light jets, 16 midsize aircraft and nine super-midsize jets. It already has 90 owned and leased jets in its fleet.

Volato

2021 start-up Volato is adding to its industry-leading fleet of 17 HondaJets. Earlier this year, it signed a firm order for 25 more of the VLJs. It is also launching the first Gulfstream G280 fractional offering, with the first deliveries slated for early 2025. With both, it brings its innovative formula, which allows owners to earn a share of charter aircraft when they are not flying. The different approach means you aren’t penalized if you under fly your share and don’t have to worry about buying extra hours if you need to fly more than you anticipated.

Airshare

Riding high with Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Airshare has expanded its primary service area to Florida. Along with its day-based Phenom 300 program is its new Challenger 3500 fractional offering. It expects to have 20 of the super-midsize jets with a stand-up cabin in its fleet by 2025. Access is based on days, starting at 20 days per year, so somebody who averages five flight hours per day gets flying time equal to buying a 1/8th share in a traditional program.

Airbus Corporate Jets and Dassault Aviation

Look for Airbus Corporate Jets to snag its first-ever fractional fleet order and Dassault Aviation to return to the segment. NetJets still has around 14 Falcon 2000s in its European fleet. Speaking during the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland, top executives from both OEMs told journalists it’s not if, it’s when. Dassault Aviation CEO Éric Trappier said, “We have been discussing with these companies…we want to be back.” Asked if his new ACJ TwoTwenty would fit alongside NetJets’ Globals and Flexjet’s Gulfstreams, ACJ President Benoit Defforge said, “Some people want a Ferrari, some people want a Rolls Royce, and some people want both.” The TwoTwenty provides a VIP airliner experience, including a master bedroom with a shower and 786 square feet of cabin space, a six-foot, six-inch-high cabin and a ten-foot and eight-inch width. According to the OEM, its 12 hours of nonstop range covers over 95 percent of typical long-range flying.

1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso

This year’s RM Sotheby’s auction at Villa Erba, Italy, during the annual Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, kicked off the season with its most successful classic car auction ever. Lot 110 of the auction was this immaculate 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso by Scaglietti coupe. The red roadster went for nearly €1.3 million (about $1.4 million), and was the 30th off the line of the 1963 swan song of 350 examples. Equipped with a 3-liter Colombo V-12 engine and four-speed manual gearbox, this Pininfarina-designed Lusso ride just screams, “Andiamo! Drive me!” The next RM Sotheby’s car auction comes up in early October in Hershey, PA, during the Eastern National Fall Meet of the Antique Automobile Club of America. rmsothebys.com

1961 Chevrolet Corvette 283/270

Of famed auction house Barrett-Jackson’s many car auctions all over the U.S., the annual event in Scottsdale, Arizona, is the Big Daddy and generally presents a bigger field of desirable vintage car options than you can shake a gear shift at. This past January’s event was no exception, with Lot 1041, a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette 283/270 drop-top (one of several ‘vettes auctioned from the Bill Munday Auto Collection), going for $308,000 when the hammer dropped. The result of a no-expenses-spared restoration, this sports car came off the line with a 283/270hp V8, AFB four-barrel carbs, a four-speed manual transmission (all of which were newly rebuilt) and a stunning Fawn on Fawn White exterior that makes you want to plunk on your shades and cruise the Pacific Coast Highway (or a reasonable facsimile closer to home). The next Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction comes around January 20 to 28, 2024, if you want to try your luck to get behind the wheel of a dream car. barrett-jackson.com

While some of the car arm of auction house Bonham’s key events (at Goodwood, Pebble Beach and Audrain, for example) were still to happen as we filed this story, The Greenwich Auction at insurance leader W.R. Berkley’s U.S. headquarters in Connecticut in early summer unveiled this rare bronze beauty: A 1988 Aston Martin Lagonda that went for a relative steal at $42,560. Only 72 left-hand drive Series IV Lagondas were built, and originally, these sleek saloons went for more than a Ferrari Testarossa. With a 5,340cc DOHC 5.3-liter V8 power plant, three-speed transmission and only 16,666 original miles, this

subtle sedan screamer may not have kept its original value that well, but the new owner will likely part with it for a profit after enjoying taking this vehicle, which is pure Aston Martin performance in sober executive clothing, for a “what the heck is that car?” trot or two. For fans of two-wheeled vintage metal, Bonham’s motorcycle auction at The Autumn Stafford Sale/ Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show in Staffordshire, U.K. in October will likely offer some rare bikes that are decidedly easier to fit in the garage than an automobile.

While plans are still being crafted for the 2024 running, your auction bids here will certainly help you round out your collection, but more often than not, the most interesting lots also include some kind of exclusive experience. Highlights from last year included an Ode to Krug Clos du Mesnil that included three three-bottle sets of the champagne and a four-day trip for two couples to the Mesnil terroir; a Wine, Wellness and the Willamette Valley package including a dozen 300ml bottles of rare Pinot Noir, some 2015 Gran Moraine Blanc de Blancs, a three-couple getaway to the participating vineyard in Oregon and a wellness trip to Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona; and many more.

Returning for 2023, the approach by the show organizers is to bring the very best of global cuisine to the very best Caribbean playground, by highlighting both local chefs and fare and inviting in some very big guns. Details for this year’s festival are still being finalized but if the 2022 roster of chefs is anything to go by in terms of anticipation, start your tastebuds. Both JeanGeorges Vongerichten and son Cedric took up residence at the Eden Rock hotel, Georgiana Viou of Rouge in Nîmes fame was cooking up a storm at the Le Sereno Hotel, Parisian chef Juan Arbelaez took over the duties at Nikki Beach… basically most venues with a stove on the island will play host to an acclaimed chef. Does it get any better? saintbarthgourmetfestival.com

Antiquorum Geneva

Geneva, November 4-5

The major watch auctions, by the major auction houses, have already occurred during the spring and summer. But, the under-the-radar Swissbased Antiquorum auction house has grown a decidedly in-the-know reputation for inventive curation and offerings since it first put the hammer down in 1974. Its 1989 Art of Patek Philippe auction, in fact, not only offered up unparalleled lots for sale, but it also spearheaded the very idea of single-watchmaker auctions. Its fall auction in Geneva is always hotly anticipated. While curators are still working on finalizing the lots for the show, its auction this past May in Geneva generated sales of over $10 million. This Gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona (pictured top left) from 1988 went for $343,761 (at the highend of its estimate) in the spring event, so that gives you a taste of what you can expect in Geneva in November.

Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Starwheel

In the decades since watch design legend Gerald Genta crafted the Royal Oak for watchmaker Audemars Piguet, that model has become a bonafide collectors’ darling, often increasing in value. The brand’s recent follow-up line, the Code 11.59, however, has had a more lukewarm response. Still, Audemars Piguet is now hitting its stride with the new timepieces, producing executions that feel more balanced and at home in the new Code design language. Especially in this recently debuted Starwheel execution based on an artful set of rotating wheels to tell time, there might be an opportunity to get in on a collectible example of a critical turning point for the brand. audemarspiguet.com

AN INVESTMENT IN TIME

With recent reports that owning the right watch may offer financial results that beat the S&P over time, timepieces have become the target of speculative buying. But most watch experts will tell you to simply acquire what you like and leave any value increase in second place. Here are some new wristwatches that have a lot to love about them, but also just might stand the test of time – and investment

Vacheron Constantin

Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date

Releasing a special ode to what a particular watchmaker simply does the best is also a harbinger of potential investment interest. A retrograde indicator (using a kind-of fuel gauge approach to telling time) is one of many specialties that have put this watchmaker’s timepieces on the wish lists of collectors. Retrogrades are a focus for the brand this year and this white gold, 42.5mm Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date features two such gauges: One for the day of the week at the bottom, and one for the date at the top. Plus, both hands “jump” back to their starting positions when the week and month finish out. Will it also “jump” in value? vacheron-constantin.com

03

Patek Philippe

6007G Calatrava

Often, a collector bump is created when a watchmaker releases an out-of-the-box version of a classic timepiece. Patek Philippe, a bastion of wristwatch classicism, produces watches that are always in demand in the world of watch collectors. However, a set of three new additions to its Calatrava line are surprisingly graphic, dynamic and purely modern, especially for Patek’s sober design philosophy. The white gold, crosshatched, black and yellow story told by this 6007G version, in particular, seems to be a departure and direction that could take on a life of its own. patek.com

The new 40mm IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40, which was a showstopper at the recent Watches & Wonders Show in Geneva, is an in-house designed follow-up, but a thoughtful and faithful modern interpretation of that classic design. Will this interesting re-envisioning of a classic compete with the original? An investment in the steel version could be your ticket to that answer. iwc.com

Offering an enviable location on the Cannes boardwalk as well as a private beach club, the Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, was the most talked about hotspot this summer. Famously the first luxury hotel to open in Cannes, the Carlton Cannes has been an iconic sight on the French Riviera for the last 100 years. Occupying an entire block overlooking the city’s prestigious beachfront promenade, La Croisette, the Carlton’s grand Belle Epoque exterior and famous “Carlton Hotel” inscription atop its façade has been restored to its former glory.

The “Grand Dame of La Croisette” has plenty of choice when it comes to places to drink and dine. One of the new additions is Turkish restaurant Rüya, plus the exclusive Bar 58 and courtyard terrace. However, the Riviera Restaurant is the most iconic of the dining establishments and has played host to the superyacht set over the decades. This is the place to book for a memorable occasion on the terrace overlooking the Croisette with views of the Mediterranean Sea. Seasonal ingredients preside over the Riviera menu, with fresh, sun-drenched dishes created by Chef Laurent Bunel and his team.

Elsewhere, enjoy the dolce vita lifestyle with lunch at the chic, 1950s-style Carlton Beach Club, where Chefs Alexandra Delamare and Laurent Bunel give rise to local and simple ingredients to create delicious light dishes.

Set just off the mainland, on Aquidneck Island, Newport is arguably America’s most enduring playground for the yachting crowd. TERRA FIRMA

With the fall yacht shows on the horizon, Navigator shows you where to go in Cannes, Monaco and Fort Lauderdale

WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

THE VIEW TERRA FIRMA 116
01 Glittering Monaco (main photo), Cannes waterfront and the waterways of Fort Lauderdale

When planning a visit to a yacht show, it’s always good to have more than one purpose for your trip. Consider, therefore, combining a trip to any or all of these shows with a mini-break at a time of year when the weather is usually excellent and the local area less busy than in high season.

THE VIEW TERRA FIRMA 117
01

Cannes

Every summer, the superyacht season kicks off with the Cannes Film Festival, attracting superyachts that continue to grace the bustling port through the peak season of July and August until early September when the Cannes Yachting Festival takes place. While visiting some of the finest yachts on display in the Old Port (Cannes Vieux Port) and Port Canto, take some time out to discover all that Cannes has to offer.

Sleep@

The talk of the summer season, the historic Carlton Cannes, a Regent hotel, opened its doors after an impressive two-year renovation. Famously the first luxury hotel to open in Cannes, its enviable location on La Croisette occupies an entire block of the coastline’s most prestigious beachfront promenade. Alternatively, for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Cannes but still soak in the Côte d’Azur in all its glory, the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc is just 10 minutes away by tender (or 25 minutes by car). Something of a celebrity magnet, its setting on the southern tip of Cap d’Antibes is perfect for those seeking privacy.

Dine@

Restaurants can be found all along the Cannes Croisette and in the cobblestone streets of the old town. For an exceptional lunch spot during the show, head to Mademoiselle Gray at La Plage Barrière. Affiliated with the five-star Hôtel Le Majestic, this scene-stealing location has the largest jetty on La Croisette, thus is easy to access if coming by tender from the show. For mouthwatering Asian dishes with a Mediterranean touch, reserve a spot at La Môme Plage, and if you are looking for a classic Riviera rosé lunch, the Eden-Roc Grill (at the aforementioned Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc) serves light cuisine. The Hôtel Martinez is where you will find the new La Plage du Martinez restaurant and beachclub, while the Carlton Cannes has plenty of choices when it comes to places to dine. (For more information, see Dock & Dine.) For a more low-key vibe, head away from the seafront to the old town of Cannes where you will find a number of family-run favorites, including the local's favorite Da Bouttau Auberge Provençale and Table 22

Drink@

Bâoli is one of the most popular places to see and be seen. Sip a cocktail on the panoramic rooftop terrace Cloud Nine and finish the night at Bâoli’s club, where DJs keep guests on the dancefloor until the early hours. For the waterborne, La Guérite, in the cove of Île Sainte-Marguerite, has its own beach and a bar serving some of the crispest rosé on the coastline.

Shop@

The shopping scene is a strong contributor to Cannes’ reputation for luxury, style and elegance. Arguably the star of the French Riviera, the Cannes Croisette hosts international brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton intermingling with independent boutiques. Parallel to the seafront, the Rue d’Antibes is where you will find the retail outposts from the world’s leading mainstream luxury brands.

Monaco

It might be the second smallest country in the world but there’s more to Monaco than meets the eye. Whether you're flying in to join Northrop & Johnson at the Monaco Yacht Show or planning a long weekend, Monaco has glitz and glamor in spades. Central Monte-Carlo delivers with its rococo façades, designer shops and views down to the superyacht-lined harbor and up toward the Old Town. Venture further to explore art galleries and manicured gardens brimming with rare cultivars. This jam-packed country is so oversubscribed that it's expanding into the sea with a $2.4 billion coastal development, the Mareterra, due for completion in 2025. For now though, the Principality has pretty much everything you could wish for in a weekend break.

Sleep@

Four of the five top hotels are run by the same company: SBM. All have Michelin-starred restaurants. Right beside the Hôtel de Paris lies its discreet neighbor Hôtel Hermitage; both have underground access to Les Thermes Marins spa. The most modern is the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel, which, with its sandybottomed lagoon, is popular with families. For beach access, it’s hard to beat Monte-Carlo Beach with its own stretch of sand and jetty. The outside to this luxury hotel monopoly is Hôtel Métropole. With a Givenchy spa and Lagerfeld-designed pool and gardens, it’s a stunning oasis in central Monte Carlo.

Dine@

Alain Ducasse’s Ômer at Hôtel de Paris offers landscapedgarden views and Mediterranean flavors. At La Note Bleue you can dip your toes in the sand while enjoying a simple salad or fish lunch. Pushing the boundaries of both art and cuisine with a fully immersive sensory experience, La Table d’Antonio Salvatore au Rampoldi is one of the most exclusive dining spaces in the world. With just five tables, this is one for a special occasion.

For Indian cuisine combined with Moorish architecture and a live DJ, try Maya Jah – sister to the Thai MayaBay. Head to the recently opened Les Ambassadeurs by Christope Cussac at Hôtel Métropole for a fusion of contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. For a special occasion, Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse at the Hôtel de Paris remains Monaco’s most exclusive dining establishment. With three Michelin stars, expect your taste buds to be wowed.

Drink@

Port Hercules, where the Monaco Yacht Show is based, is lined with waterside bars for an informal drink, while the Shisha Lounge at Twiga Monte-Carlo attracts a well-heeled crowd. A more refined place for an evening drink is Hôtel Métropole’s book-lined bar. The classic spot for live jazz remains Hôtel de Paris’ Bar Américain, though locals and regular visitors often frequent the Sass Café

Shop@

Designer labels are spread between Casino Square’s One MonteCarlo mall and neighboring streets including Avenue de MonteCarlo and Avenue des Beaux-Arts. Yachting aficianados love Sabrina Monte-Carlo, whose design pieces are used by founder Sabrina Monteleone on her yacht interior projects.

Chill@

After a day pounding the docks on yacht viewings, rest your feet at one of the two spas that steal the well-being scene. The Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo specializes in thalassotherapy treatments, while the Spa Métropole by Givenchy, which is located in the Hôtel Métropole, is an oasis of calm with treatments to match.

Fort Lauderdale

Spread over seven locations around Fort Lauderdale, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the biggest onwater boat show in the world. If you can spare some time away, the “Venice of America,” so named for the city’s winding canal system, has a vibrant culinary scene and plenty of beaches –23 miles of sand, in fact.

Sleep@

Staying on the beach in Fort Lauderdale is a must and there are plenty of options. The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale, is ideally located for the show, and with its nautical design and ocean-view pool deck, you can watch the sunrise over the ocean and the sunset over the Intracoastal as you pick out the yachts you would like to view the next day. One of the most talked about additions to the hotel scene, the nearby Four Seasons is also a great location for accessing the show. Further afield, the family-run Lago Mar Beach Resort & Club offers 500’ of private beach and six culinary options.

Dine@

The aforementioned Four Seasons Hotel is where you will find the Eastern Mediterranean restaurant Evelyn’s. Alternatively, one of Fort Lauderdale’s oldest establishments, Casa d’Angelo, continues to deliver consistently fine authentic Italian fare, while those looking for the current hot spot should head to Flagler Village and the divine Italian-inspired restaurant, Heritage.

Drink@

The former spring break capital may have grown up, but it still offers plenty of hip rooftop bars and chic cocktail clubs. After a quick peek at the legendary 1938 Elbo Room Beach Bar, head east along Las Olas Boulevard, which is bursting with brand new watering holes ranging from rooftop bars to riverfront patios and intimate hidden gems. Sneak into the speakeasy-style Sidecar or the reservation-only speakeasy Room 901 or take in the view with a craft cocktail at Rooftop @1WLO before a nightcap at the Golden Lyon Vintage Pub, Atlas Cocktail Lounge or the brand new Palm Room

Shop@

Las Olas Boulevard has been revived as the heart and soul of Fort Lauderdale, and is known for its shopping and art galleries. Alternatively, Flagler Village or the renewed Riverwalk offer a collection of independent brands and boutiques.
