The sandy little west-facing cove of Porth Iago is one of the Llŷn Peninsula’s best-kept secrets. Flanked by the low grassy headlands of Dinas and Graig Ddu, this small sandy beach is fairly sheltered making it a great spot for a dip in the clear blue water. The car park is located just above the beach, and reached via a private track through Ty Mawr farm which has a pay and display machine for parking. Access to Porth Iago is then down a steep sandy path, alternatively you can reach the beach via a scramble down the dunes from one of the newest sections of the Wales Coast Path. It seems that wild water swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding have never been as popular, but it is important to know the risks so that you can plan a safe outing on the water…
It’s a very unfortunate fact that many drowning victims are competent swimmers that have overrated their abilities in more slightly more dangerous water, so it’s very important to know the risks before you take part in any water sport. You’ll know the story if you’ve been to the National Welsh Language and Heritage Centre, known as ‘the Nant’, near the village of Llithfaen on the north coast of the Llyn Peninsula. Doing what I do isn’t too dissimilar to painting, you look at what it is you are drawing, you work on the composition, you choose your brush, lay the colours on your canvas the same way, sketch outlines with the graphic pen, choose colours and off you go! I think the biggest difference is you don’t get harsh chemicals on your hands, which used to play havoc with my eczema! And I must say it’s far more forgiving than paint and paper if you make mistakes, knowing I can get rid of things easily gives me freedom to make mistakes in the first place. If I don’t like something or realise I liked it better ten minutes ago I can strip it back and start over again without damaging paper. Quite often though it’s these mistakes which I love and often leave, because they look unique to my art form, it’s the mistakes that keeps things interesting.

JOIN ASTRONAUT TIM PEAKE FOR A JOURNEY TO SPACE Tim Peake is keeping his feet firmly on the ground as he heads to Llandudno next month with his one-man show, My Journey To Space…
The British astronaut made history in 2015 as the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station. And now fans can take orbit with Tim at the Venue Cymru on Thursday 22nd September, as he shares the secrets and science of how and why humans journey into space. My Journey To Space gives audiences a fascinating insight into life as an astronaut, complete with breath-taking photographs and never-before-seen footage. Tim Peake joined the European Space Agency in 2009, after an 18-year career in the Army. In December 2015, he became the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station to conduct a spacewalk while orbiting Earth. as a test pilot pushing aircraft to their very limits. When we got down to the final 10, with just four places available, the director general of ESA wanted to meet all of us – and he then decided he was going to actually select six people. Even then, I didn’t quite believe I’d make the final cut as at that time, the UK wasn’t paying into the human spaceflight programme, so why would they chose a UK candidate? The announcement was planned for a Wednesday, and I got a phone call on the Monday evening – by which time, I’d assumed it was a ‘Thanks but no thanks’ call. Instead, they were asking me to get to Paris, ready for the announcement. Sometimes you just have to grab an opportunity when you have the chance. How did you prepare for the mission? The two years leading up to launch were a blur of activity. There was so much training, so much to learn; how to fly a spacecraft, do a spacewalk, dock cargo vehicles, deal with emergencies, maintain the space station and conduct all the science experiments. Then there’s medical training too and in any spare time, preparing the educational outreach projects. So what is it like to actually launch into space?

programme were soon restored.
Harlech Yet another one of Edward I’s masterpieces, Harlech Castle cost £8,190 to build, making it one of his cheaper investments. It was also constructed in record pace between 1283 and 1295 by an army of nearly a thousand skilled craftsmen and labourers. The castle, again overseen by James of St George, boasts two rings of walls and towers, with an incredibly strong east gatehouse making it impenetrable from every direction. In addition, a 200-foot long stairway joined the castle to the cliff base, meaning that supplies were easy to access. When Harlech castle was first built, a channel would have connected the castle and the sea, meaning that a boat could sail up to the moat. Seven hundred years later, the sea has receded and the castle appears almost stranded.
Penrhyn Penrhyn Castle was built between 1820 and 1833, by the well-known architect Thomas Hopper, for George Hay Dawkins Pennant. Known for his unconventional style, Hopper chose not to follow the current fashion for Gothic architecture, plumping instead for a neo-Norman design. Hopper also supervised local craftsmen while they designed and built the castle’s furniture. Before he died in 1840 Pennant had charged his son-in-law (Edward Gordon Douglas) with developing the castle’s collection of paintings. Douglas did this extremely well, amassing an exceptional collection of Spanish, Venetian and Dutch paintings. The collection gave Penrhyn its reputation of being ‘the Gallery of North Wales’ at that time.

A local tipple… August is the last month that we can enjoy these long summer evenings, so make the most of them by relaxing in the garden after dinner with one of these fabulous local liqueurs…
Cariad Gin Range: Many of Cariad’s fabulous flavours make the perfect liqueur
When the sun has gone down there is no better feeling than chilling out with a glass of something special in your hand. But if, like many people, you are stuck in that same after-dinner drink rut look no further, as North Wales has some fabulous local alternatives. For example, have you tried Merlyn Cream Liqueur?! It’s produced by Penderyn Distillery and named after the King Arthur Pendragon’s legendary Welsh wizard. It is a magical blend of Penderyn’s new make spirit and the finest dairy cream, for a wonderfully smooth, mellow and irresistible flavour.
Merlyn Crea m Liqueur is produced Penderyn Di by stillery and is named af the legendar ter y Welsh wiz ard
Merlyn Cream Liqueur has a rich and warming creamy texture of fudge toffee, which gradually gives way to vanilla, hints of banana and exotic fruits, all lingering gently in the background. It won the Best Liqueur Award at the World Liqueur Awards in 2018 and has also made an appearance on TV with celebrity Chef James Martin on ITV’s Highlands to Islands show, where he made Churros using Merlyn Cream Liqueur. Available in 70cl or 5cl bottles from Penderyn Distillery Llandudno or via their website, Merlyn Cream makes the perfect summer drink with ice – or why don’t you try making a Merlyn’s Magic cocktail?! Meanwhile Cariad Distillery focuses on gin, but many of its fabulous flavours make the perfect liqueur. Marmalade and Bayleaf Gin is a delicately sweet orange gin with softly fragrant bay leaves which bring out the absolute best of the fresh citrus fruit. The sweet tart taste of this wonderful fruit paired with the fragrant aroma and complex flavour of the dried bay leaf is like nothing else. Lemon and Lime Gin is a well-balanced smooth citrus gin with light herbal characteristics. Predominantly juniper in flavour with a zesty hint of

lemon and lime. The bold and tangy Blackcurrant Gin with a hint of spice makes a great summer tipple due to its distinct bitter sweet taste, Plum Crumble Gin offers comforting ripened plums and a hint of soothing vanilla, while in the Welsh Wildflower Honey and Lemon Gin the piney juniper is complimented beautifully with delicate floral notes and zingy lemon zest. Food for thought
I often get asked if I manage to get over to France much. My parents, who set up Paysanne 34 years ago, have been living there since 2003, so hypothetically I have the luxury of free room & board if I fancy it. The truth, alas is that getting away from a busy restaurant for more than a couple of days is harder than it looks. Of course, it was harder still during lockdown, when at one point we couldn’t even drive to Llanfairfechan, still less traipse over to the Languedoc. Back then, one way I found to travel (in my head at least) was to watch French cookery shows, which briefly passed for actually going there. The Elvis Presley of this particular genre is Floyd on France (which is available to watch on iPlayer). This magnificent programme from 1987 was a huge influence on my Mum, who was already getting into French cookery in a big way prior to taking on Paysanne. There are too many highlights to list, but anyone who doesn’t want to throw everything into a suitcase and head off to the Dordogne after watching the episode in Perigord is beyond my understanding. France is something of a rite of passage for most TV cooks. James Martin followed Keith Floyd’s trail (in Floyd’s battered old Citroën 2CV), Rick Stein tried to discover the

Rydal Penrhos hosts Penrhos College Class of 1982 One thing that sets Rydal Penrhos apart is the strong connection between Alumni and the school. Being part of the Rydal Penrhos family institutes a life-changing connection, symbolised by lifelong membership of the Rydal Penrhos Society, their alumni association. So the school was delighted to welcome back the Penrhos College Class of 1982 for their 40th-anniversary reunion on Saturday 16th July, which was an emotional occasion and something that further reflected the close bond generated between pupils that stands the test of time. Penrhos College began in 1880 with 12 girls in a couple of three-storied houses ‘with basements’ on Colwyn Bay promenade. In 1895, the school moved into the premises of the short-lived but grand ‘Hydropathic Establishment’ purchased from the Pwllycrochan Estate. The Penrhos College Class of 1982 began their reunion with a welcome glass of fizz and the chance to sample the famous “honey buns” that were served at tea during their time as pupils. They shared a wealth of stories with a fondness that is a testament to how immersed they were as pupils before moving on to the next stage of their respective journeys.

EDUCATION NEWS Rydal Penrhos community supports Blind Veterans UK
Pupils and staff came together as the entire Rydal Penrhos community participated in a challenging Walkathon before the summer break to raise funds for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired exService men and women. Blind Veterans UK supports thousands of blind veterans across the country, but knows there are tens of thousands more who still need its support to rebuild their lives after sight loss. More than 120 pupils and staff from all areas of Rydal Penrhos began their journey at Colwyn Bay’s Victoria Pier, walking along the coastline to the heart of Llandudno and back in perfect conditions for such a task. A total of £2,867 has been raised to date, with all proceeds going towards the Blind Veterans UK Centre for Wellbeing situated in Llandudno. Victoria Beech from the Blind Veterans UK Community Partnerships Team, sent in a message of thanks on behalf of the charity, praising the school for its exceptional commitment to a very worthy cause.
Glyndwr University completes sale of Racecourse Ground stadium to Wrexham AFC
Glyndwr University is pleased to confirm that the transfer of the Racecourse Ground stadium freehold to Wrexham AFC has been completed. The completion marks the end of the university’s ownership of the stadium which began at a time when the club was in very real danger of going out of existence. In the summer of 2011 Glyndwr stepped forward in the club’s hour of need as the only viable purchaser of the stadium, enabling the Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) to concentrate on gaining the ownership of the club itself. As well as safeguarding the stadium for future generations, the acquisition also provided a topclass facility which provided a range of uses for the university’s students and staff. For the first five years the university took on responsibility for the running, maintenance and upkeep of the facility, before a 99-year lease was agreed with the WST in 2016, with the trust taking on responsibility for the stadium operation. With the club now owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and its long-term future secure, the university felt it was the right time to facilitate the club taking ownership of the stadium once again.

Coleg Cambria improves Animal Management course
Animal magic and the creature comforts of learning closer to home have attracted students to a college university centre. Coleg Cambria’s HNC and HND in Animal Management have been lauded for the hands-on experience and bespoke teaching offered at its picturesque site in Northop, Flintshire. Programme leader Sadie Thackaberry (pictured) said the college’s industry links and modern facilities – including the vibrant Small Animals Centre – have led graduates to ecology internships and a wide range of jobs including zookeepers and RSPCA welfare officers. “Our students get to work with around 100 different species from all over the world, including native livestock breeds and a variety of invertebrates, amphibians, fish, birds, mammals and from next year we will introduce alpacas and a cane toad,” she said. “Because the students are close to the animals and partake in in-depth theory sessions this comprehensive approach provides a unique perspective on the care and management of these amazing creatures. Of course, there is the academic element to the qualifications we offer but being part of a real-life, real-time environment prepares them better for their future careers.”

Choosing a headstone
A memorial headstone is an opportunity to remember the person that has died and commemorate their life. Not only does a headstone provide a tangible reminder of the person who has died, it also becomes a marker for loved ones to visit and honour their memory. If you are not sure where to start when choosing a headstone, this guide to the different options may help. What types of headstones are there? Memorial headstones come in a variety of shapes and sizes and the type you choose will be personal to you. Sparking the imagination from Flint to Holywell
As Welsh walking itineraries go, it’s tough to think of a more spectacular starting point than Flint Castle. Nestled majestically on the banks of the Dee estuary, Flint Castle is not only a sight for sore eyes — but a site where spectacular history lies, too. Boasting a sophisticated design, the historical significance of Flint – one of Edward I’s most unusual Welsh castles – is twofold: as well as being the first to be founded as part of his campaign against Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (Llywelyn the Last) in North Wales, it was also the location of a pivotal 1939 meeting between Richard II and his rival to the crown, Henry Bolingbroke – an event immortalised in Shakespeare’s Richard II. Despite being an extremely tough act to follow, the rest of the walk does not disappoint. Flint Castle and estuary offer breath-taking views, leading into the picturesque beauty of Greenfield Valley Heritage Park and Basingwerk Abbey. Spanning a total of seven miles, Gruff Owen, Wales Coast Path officer for the North Wales coast, describes it best: “This is a fabulously varied day on the Dee estuary taking in important historical military, religious and industrial sites – and much of the walk is alongside one of Europe’s top sites for birds.” If the prospect of a seven-mile walk seems a little too much, however, the beauty of this itinerary is that it also offers two other shorter – yet equally enjoyable – routes: one three-mile stroll to Bagillt, and another six-mile option to Greenfield.
From the finesse of Flint Castle to the splendour of St Winefride’s; this captivating, seven-mile itinerary not only showcases Welsh nature at its very best — but Welsh history, too.
And, if it’s left you looking to explore even more of Wales’ unique historic sites – as well as protect and preserve them for future generations to come – then look no further than a Cadw membership. With senior membership costing as little as £42 and adult membership £53 a year, there’s never been a better – or more important – time to be a Cadw member; because, with these sites providing an enduring living link to our diverse histories, they also help us make sense of our place in an ever-changing world. And, as these awe-inspiring historic places continue to play such a pivotal part in enriching the everyday lives of everyday people, the need to care and protect them also continues to grow in importance. Without the contribution and support of Cadw members that care and protection simply wouldn’t be possible. That’s what makes Cadw membership so unique, in the first place: yes, membership means unlimited access to 130 historic sites across Wales — but it also means that exploring Wales today is also a pledge to preserving its tomorrow. Help safeguard our heritage for the future: become a Cadw member at cadw.gov.wales today.

THE ROUTE
Having explored everything Flint Castle has to offer, your walk starts in earnest by following the signs for the Wales Coast Path to a stunning wooded shoreline. From there, you’ll follow a flat path along the banks and salt marshes of the Dee estuary which, four centuries ago, was one of the busiest waterways in the world. With some three miles already under your belt, those looking to wrap up their journey can now use the railway crossing at Bagillt to catch a bus back to Flint. For those wanting to prolong their journey, however, further adventure awaits. As the route splits slightly, you’ll be presented with two options: continue straight ahead, or veer up a small hill towards a large steel dragon occupying a stunning viewpoint overlooking the Dee estuary’s vast basin. Moving on, you’ll eventually
