Synopsis by Meagunn Hart

Hector Hugh Munro, who wrote under the pseudonym S a k i , wa s a w i t t y B r i t i s h author who sat irized the conventions and hypocrisies of Edwardian England. His humorous short stories often reveal and mock the pettiness and self-importance of the upper-class members of his society. In “The Seven Cream Jugs,” the Pigeoncotes, who are por trayed as typical representatives of high society, allow their prejudice to get the better of them when they are visited by a cousin who had intended to gift them a silver cream jug for their 25th wedding anniversary. The story makes it clear that we should not judge others if we can’t accept being judged ourselves. 1. Have you ever made an assumption about someone that turned out to be false? 2. If you make a mistake, should you own up to it?

We’ve all heard the phrase less is more, and in the case of our personal space, it couldn’t be more accurate. In fact, studies have shown that a messy 1 home can take a significant toll on our well-being◆ because clutter can increase our stress and anxiety2 levels 5

and reduce our ability to concentrate. One place where this is particularly apparent3 is the bedroom, where the average person spends about a third of their time. Perhaps no sweet treat is more representative of Italian cuisine than tiramisu, a rich dessert made with ladyfinger biscuits that have been soaked in espresso coffee, layered with mascarpone cheese, and topped with a generous dusting of cocoa powder. Tiramisu literally means “pick me up,” probably because of its two caffeine-containing ingredients, coffee and cocoa. Whether this dessert’s popularity is due to its invigorating effect or its delicious combination of flavors, tiramisu is now a global phenomenon. It even made its way into space in 2013, when the Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano took the dessert to share with his fellow crew members aboard the ISS.

A Tale of Two Steaks: Porterhouse vs. T-bone The T-bone and porterhouse are steaks cut from the short loin. Both have a T-shaped bone in the center with meat on either side. Porterhouse steaks are cut from the back of the short loin and thus have more tenderloin and a larger strip steak. T-bone steaks, on the other hand, are cut from the front of the short loin and thus contain less tenderloin.

Francine has recently taken a trip along the Romantic Road in Germany. She kept a diary and took some photographs to document her experiences. Now she wants to design a map to show the places that she visited.

(A) My aunt and uncle own a vineyard, so of course I had to spend a little time here. Besides, I really wanted to see the palace—and I’m glad I did. It’s spectacular! I just wish I knew more about art history so I could’ve better appreciated the beautiful fresco above the staircase. (B) I spent most of the day admiring the bright yellow buildings in the housing complex—they were simply beautiful. And the guide explained that current residents pay only around a dollar each year to live there! Apparently, the rate hasn’t changed since the complex was established five centuries ago. (C) I climbed the church tower in the middle of town because I thought it would offer a good view of the city wall. Once I was at the top, another tourist pointed out the edge of a meteor crater in the distance. Apparently, the meteor struck the area millions of years ago, and the town was built near the center of the crater. That’s crazy!

(D) The old town here was incredible! I felt like I had been transported back in time as I wandered through the cobblestone streets. I’d love to live in a place with this much history behind it. One day, perhaps. (E) I came here mainly to see the castle on the hill near the village. It’s one of the oldest in Germany! I decided to stay the night because, well, how often am I going to be able to stay in a castle? But there wasn’t much to do in the village, so I decided to continue south the next day. (F) Arriving here was bittersweet, as it meant that my trip was at an end. But it was a beautiful place to relax. I spent a lot of time here drinking coffee and looking out over the nearby Alps, thinking about everything I had seen and experienced during my trip. (G) This was definitely the highlight of the trip! The castle was absolutely magical—like something out of a fairy tale. I’m so glad that I booked the all-day tour! I could’ve spent a week wandering among the palace rooms there. The only downside was that there were so many tourists—but it’s easy to understand why.

15

In theory, the world is now neatly divided into 24 even time zones. The reality, however, is a little more complicated.3 Most countries use longitudinal lines as rough guides only, choosing to use state lines or national borders to demarcate◆ their time zones instead.

You can catch up on sleep. Have you ever stayed in bed until noon on the weekend to “make up for” your lack of sleep during 10

the week? Unfortunately, our bodies just don’t work that way. And in fact, too much sleep at once will actually make you feel more tired. What your body needs is a consistent3 eight hours of sleep per night. So instead of binging◆ on sleep once a week, adjust your

We use only 10 percent of our brain. 35

Part II:

Water Wastage◆ in Taiwan Taken together,★ these images depict1 a common problem here in Taiwan: despite frequent water shortages,2 people still waste water. Although we have the highest rate of rainfall3 out of any developed country, Taiwan still experiences water shortages. That’s partly because our reservoirs4 are capable of holding only 5

six weeks’ worth of water.★ In Taiwan, therefore, water is a precious resource. But the unfortunate fact is that we don’t treat it as such. Because water is so cheap here, people don’t view it as a valuable commodity.5 That mindset◆ leads to waste. To ensure that the water in Taiwan’s reservoirs lasts, we need to be more aware of how much water we use on a daily basis. That might involve making

10

some simple adjustments6 to our water-usage habits. For example, instead of leaving the tap running while we brush our teeth, we could switch it off. Another water-saving habit is limiting our showers to five minutes. Taking longer showers may be tempting,7 but it’s unnecessary. There are almost 24 million people in Taiwan, so if we all make small changes to our water-usage habits, we can make

Tidy House, Tidy Mind: The Art of Decluttering

Questions 1 and 2 are based on the following passage. For the perfect steak, follow these simple tips. First, choose a high-quality cut of meat. You can’t do much with poor ingredients. Personally, I recommend a nice thick rib eye. Second, make sure the meat has been out of the fridge for at least one hour before you cook it. If it’s not at room temperature, it won’t cook evenly. Third, generously coat the meat in salt and pepper before placing it in your pan. Fourth, cook the steak over a medium-high heat. You’ll want to brown it nicely on each side before turning the heat down slightly. Fifth, once you’ve browned the steak, add some butter, garlic, and herbs to the pan and spoon the mixture over the steak, turning it every two minutes until it’s done. Finally, let the steak rest for around five minutes before you serve it. Letting the meat rest will make it juicier and tastier. Then all that’s left to do is enjoy your perfect steak.

Time Zones: A Cycle of Problems and Solutions

water wastage. Taiwan experiences heavy rainfall, but there are still frequent water shortages here because our reservoirs can’t hold enough water. Water is so cheap in Taiwan that people don’t view it as a precious resource. Unfortunately, that means people tend to waste it. If we are to prevent water shortages in the future, we’ll have to be more mindful of our water use. We could, for instance, try not to leave the tap running while we brush our teeth. Or we could collect the water that would otherwise be wasted while we wait for our shower to heat up and use it to flush the toilet or water our houseplants. If we all make a conscious decision to use less water, we can ensure that we’ll have enough in our reservoirs to get us through periods of drought.

Part II

The Problem of E-waste As technology becomes more advanced, people replace their electronic devices more frequently. Unfortunately, this cycle of buying, using, and discarding is filling the earth with e-waste. E-waste is particularly harmful to the environment, as it contains a number of toxic chemicals. When e-waste isn’t disposed of correctly, these chemicals can end up poisoning our soil, water, and air. This pollution is particularly concerning when you consider that e-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams on the planet. Currently, we produce more than 50 million tonnes of it each year, and that number is set to increase if we don’t take action. Fortunately, there are steps we can take to reduce e-waste. First, we can push for legislation that would force electronics companies to manufacture their products with repairable or replaceable par ts. By repairing or replacing components, we can extend the life of our devices. Second, we can simply purchase fewer devices. Before buying the latest phone, tablet, 71
