Kenmore Air Celebrates 75 Years with Special Scenic Fare One of the most beloved peripheral businesses serving the boating community, Kenmore Air (kenmoreair.com), is celebrating its 75 years in operation with daily scenic seaplane tours of Puget Sound through the end of September. To commemorate the airline’s anniversary, the half-hour roundtrip tours are being offered at the special discount price of just $75 per seat. The scenic flights leave hourly, between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., taking off and landing at the Kenmore Seaplane Terminal on Lake Washington. The flights, using Kenmore’s restored de Havilland Beaver and Otter seaplanes, will offer spectacular views of Seattle, the University of Washington, Shilshole Bay, and Discovery Point. The fun will continue even after the weather turns this fall. Kenmore will offer 75th

anniversary flights on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Saturdays, and Sundays through the month of October as well. In addition to the regular passenger service it provides to boating destinations like the San Juan Islands, Victoria, B.C., and the Inside Passage, Kenmore also offers scenic flights over Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and the Olympic Peninsula. While visiting the Kenmore terminal, passengers can also wet their whistles at the recently opened Stoup Brewing Taproom (stoupbrewing.com/kenmore) right across Bothell Way on the site of the former Seaplane Kitchen. In addition to dozens of micro beers on tap, Stoup Kenmore offers a selection of appetizers, pizzas, salads, and sandwiches for hungry fliers.

U.S. Coast Guard Looking to Expand Seattle Base With the need for Arctic ice-breaking missions becoming more acute over the next decade, the Seattle waterfront is expected to see an expanded and renovated presence by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). As the hub of the USCG’s Pacific Northwest and Arctic operations, Seattle is slated to expand the Guard’s existing facilities at Terminal 46 on the south end of the waterfront, but the final plan has not yet been decided. Currently, the Guard employs about 900 people in District 13, which covers the Pacific Northwest region, and berths three vessels: heavy icebreaker Polar Star, medium icebreaker Healy, and cutter Mellon. According to a statement posted in the Federal Register (federalregister.gov), the USCG plans to add another three icebreakers to the Seattle fleet, along with as many as four cutters over the next 10 years as operations ramp up in the polar regions. These new berths will require more dock space and maintenance facilities, but the Port of Seattle has voiced concerns about how the plans may interfere with ongoing plans to expand bulk cargo operations adjacent to the USCG’s current 23-acre space. The expansion is being proposed in three potential scenarios: • The acquisition of 54.1 acres, mostly from the 87-acre Terminal 46 • A smaller 21.5-acre land purchase from the Port of Seattle, including five acres from Terminal 46 and 13.5 acres from Terminal 30 • A 24.25-acre expansion, mostly from Terminal 46 All three proposals involve the removal of five buildings, the construction of two new buildings for administration, the realignment of parking and road access, and upgrades to the Guard’s communications, electrical service, and other utilities. After the 45-day public comment period that ended in June, an environmental impact statement process will be underway for the chosen expansion project. That process is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022.

The newly revamped Corinthian Yacht Club. PHOTO BY JACK CONNICK

[ YACHTING CLUB UPDATES ]

Puget Sound Yacht Clubs on the Move Two of the more prominent yacht clubs in the Puget Sound area are making progress in their endeavors to create new headquarters. The Everett Yacht Club (everettyachtclub.com) will be moving to the South Marina in the Port of Everett, while Seattle’s Corinthian Yacht Club (cycseattle.org) has made great strides in the refurbishment of its floating hub. A new 30-year ground lease and building transfer between the EYC and the Port of Everett will allow the club to relocate their clubhouse and moorage dock to the Port’s South Marina. The EYC, formed in 1907, recently vacated the Central Dock building, which it had occupied for more than 50 years, and will create a new clubhouse by renovating an existing South Marina building. The lease also includes 150 feet of moorage space near the building. The EYC project, in the works for five years and expected to cost nearly $1 million, will be a multi-floor indoor/outdoor space to be used for member meetings, club gatherings, and training courses. The renovation will also feature a “Crow’s Nest” kitchen and bar, a new elevator, and access to the marina’s Commodore Plaza. 28

The target opening date for the new facility will be sometime in 2022, EYC said. As part of the deal, the Port will market the EYC site as a waterfront restaurant opportunity. The Central Dock building, however, is slated for demolition next year. Meanwhile, in Seattle, the CYC clubhouse project began last September with a haulout to Lake Union for dry dock work, followed by an incredible float trip back home to Shilshole in February. Since then, the rest of the project has continued to move along at a good clip, reported CYC co-director Stuart Burnell. The crew has made improvements to the shower facilities, replaced the wood supports for the lower entry door, and repaired the steel hull, he said. Other completed renovations include new windows and exterior doors, a replaced exterior skin with a new weather barrier, and new roofing materials. Next, a team of CYC volunteers will begin work on fixing up the interior, including new carpeting and flooring, electrical upgrades, soundproofing in the ceiling, improvement to the bar, and fresh coats of paint.

[ SUMMER FEST REDUX ]

Partial Return of Seafair Will Still Be Muted Shiver me timbers! Seafair (seafair.org) will be returning to the Seattle area this summer, but don’t expect much cannon fire from the pirates. There will still be quite a few lingering limitations or cancellations of large public events from the region’s pandemic restrictions. First the bad news: This year, organizers said there will be no live performances of the HomeStreet Bank Cup hydroplane races, the July 4th fireworks at Gas Works Park, the Milk Carton Derby at Green Lake, or the Blue Angels air show. This is all terribly disappointing to anyone who loves the annual traditions of the citywide maritime festival. But the good news is that some events will still happen, partially in person and partially online.

For example, those interested in the Milk Carton Derby are encouraged to create their floating contraptions at home and enter them online for a chance to win prizes. The hydroplane races and air show will also be simulated online, with boat drivers competing from home and Blue Angel pilots available for interviews with fans. The Seafair Triathlon (July 25) will be held in limited fashion on a course in Sammamish State Park, while the 5K Torchlight Run (July 31) can be done virtually or in-person. From Aug. 2-6, Fleet Week will be virtual, but it will include more than 100 maritime-related activities online. The Torchlight Parade series, to be held in July and August, will be an expansion of last year’s modified version, featuring Seafair caravans that will move through various neighborhoods each week through a nomination process.

[ HOP ON BOARD WITH THESE FRESH FIXATIONS FROM OUR LOG BOOK ]

TH E CU RRE N T BY KATE CALAMUSA

Floating the Ideas When news leaked this spring that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was rumored to have commissioned a 417-foot-long luxury superyacht that comes with a helipad equipped “support yacht” (that’s a new one!), we couldn’t help but wonder what groundbreaking features will end up on board the local billionaire’s boat. Well, the world’s top yacht designers and engineers sure have a few ideas on that front, including these three recently released innovative concepts—take note of this tech, Mr. Bezos. Down, Please Descend into the depths, without ever getting wet, with the Hydrosphere underwater glass elevator. Designed by London-based firm Gresham Yacht Design (greshamyachtdesign.com), this ingenious structure extends out from the hull of the vessel in mere minutes to offer 360-degree views of the marine creatures and wondrous topography below. Seating up to seven guests with onboard lighting to help illuminate the waters, the luxe lounge can even be deployed while underway (up to a max speed of 2 knots); when not in use, the pressure shell retracts back into the hull, protected by an external hatch and parked above the waterline.

Pollutant Pick-Up Saving the planet many, many, many plastic bottles at a time, this new 185-foot hybrid sailboat is the world’s first sea-cleaning vessel designed to collect, treat, and repurpose large volumes of floating plastic debris from the ocean waters. The Manta is the creation of The SeaCleaners (theseacleaners.org) consortium, which was founded by world-renowned Franco-Swiss sailor Yvan Bourgnon after witnessing the rise of ocean pollutants firsthand. She can snap up to three tons of refuse per hour and operates autonomously 75% of the time, thanks to the energy created by on-board solar panels, wind turbines, and two hydro generators. This particular vessel will patrol some of the world’s most polluted waterways starting in 2024 as part of the The SeaCleaners core mission.

The Sphere Featuring a “science sphere” on the aft deck that is very reminiscent to certain spherical landmarks now in downtown Seattle (wink, wink), the Earth300 gigayacht concept announced by Iddes Yachts (iddesyachts.com) in April is designed to be 100% emission free, powered by nuclear tech known as molten salt reactors (MSRs). The vessel is equipped with 22 scientific laboratories with the capacity to house 160 scientists, plus a cantilevered observation deck, and that aforementioned sphere? It’s a whopping 13 stories tall. The concept has the support of such international partners as IBM, RINA, Triton Submarines, and EYOS Expeditions, with a projected launch date sometime in 2025.

Spice up your cocktails this summer Summer’s here and the time is right to give your booze some heat! When you plan your next party on the water, be sure to add some Addition Cocktail Spice and Beer Sauce to the cooler. The mix-and-match, add-in concoctions from this Seattle-based brand give your cocktails an extra kick in a range of zesty flavors, from the subtle flavors of rosemary, cinnamon, thyme, and clove (try that last one in a rum and cola) to the extra fire of chipotle, habañero, or jalapeño, all three of which kick up a margarita nicely. And beer lovers, don’t despair: The brand has three kinds of Beer Sauce styles (Original, Smoky, or Extra Spicy) to give your next brew some giddy-up, too. $18 for Cocktail Spice; $14 for Beer Sauce // drinkaddition.com.

May I have s’more, cap’n? S’mores have been a legendary campfire favorite for nearly a century (starting with the Girl Scouts in 1927, to be exact). Now, this classic outdoorsy treat can be brought from the campsite to your boat deck for those late summer nights on the water. Portland’s 1927 S’mores Company offers ready-to-go S’mores Kits in several gourmet flavors, from red raspberry to cocoa espresso to whiskey salted caramel. Kits include graham crackers, chocolate bars, and flavored marshmallows—just heat and serve for the perfect dessert without all the camping gear. For those who miss the open flames, there’s even a separate City Bonfires kit to provide a safe, portable heat source to give it that campfire feel. $20 per kit; $21 for City Bonfires // 1927smores.com. 34

Keep things frosty with YETI’s Hopper cooler This stylish, soft-shelled tote will keep it cool onboard, whether it’s beer, ice cream, or the fresh Dungeness crab that inspired the Hopper M30 cooler. The M30 is part of the new King Crab Orange collection from YETI, and while soft on the outside, it’s tough on the inside. Featuring Coldcell foam insulation and a tight seal with a HydroShield magnetic-strip closure, the bag beats any kind of heat. The 15-by-17.5-inch M30 can hold up to 20 beverage cans or 28 pounds of ice, and comes with an extra-wide mouth for easy loading and unloading. The durable Dryhide outer shell includes two quick-release buckles for added strength and security. $299.99 // yeti.com.

Get a grip during racing season Soon after being declared the official footwear provider for the SailGP catamaran race, Spainbased shoe manufacturer Camper is introducing a new boating shoe specifically designed for SailGP, based on Camper’s classic Pelotas XL design. Adopting the traditional colors of the Spanish SailGP team, the top of the red-and-black sneaker is made of combination of suede and 100% recycled PET, while the ridged, non-slip sole is made of rubber-like, ultra-lightweight EVA material. Besides being light and durable, the shoes don’t tread too hard on the environment; at least 50% of the footwear is made from either organic, recycled, or upcycled materials. $130.00 // camper.com.

Paddle North’s utility dock suits all summertime needs Think of this new utility dock from Paddle North as your leisure lounge on the go. Crafted from high-grade PVC, the sturdy inflatable platform can be filled up with air, using any type of compressor via the universal valve, to its full, roomy size of 9-by-6-feet. The dock can be anchored as a floating swim raft or towed at idle speed behind the boat. The platform is secure enough to handle patio chairs and sunbathers or be used as a water-level launching spot for kayaks, paddleboards, or jet skis. At the end of the day, the whole thing folds up to about a quarter of the size of most standard floating foam mats, making it a snap to stow aboard. $799 // paddlenorth.com.

Garmin MSC 10 provides precise location data Know where you are and where you’re going with Garmin’s new MSC 10 Marine Satellite Compass. With multi-band GNSS and a fully integrated attitude and heading reference system, the MSC 10 provides hyper-accurate, GPS-derived information on a boat’s heading and position within two degrees. The easy-to-install compass uses satellite signals, which eliminate magnetic interference that can degrade heading accuracy. The MSC 10 can also deliver reliable and precise pitch, roll, and heave information, even in rough seas. If the satellite signal is ever lost, the MSC10 will automatically transition from GPS functionality to a backup magnetometer-based heading. $1,099.99 // buy.garmin.com. 35

Fido’s Afloat! The dog days of summer are here, which means I’m all about that #FloatLife whenever the aft deck gets too toasty. This Funboy x Bark Yacht Dog Float allows me to lounge in style and in safety, as it is made with a thick, puncture resistant plastic. The roomy 58-inch-long craft also features a reinforced compartment so that my new favorite fishy toys can tag along for the ride. $59 // barkshop.com or funboy.com.

Reel ‘Em In With a rugged, brightly colored, reinforced canvas exterior and inverted reeds in the interior for challenging play, the Fetch Pet Products Reely Fish Squeaky Plush Dog Toys are twice the fun. The super chewy canvas is double stitched for durability, and should I still decide to filet a fish all by myself, the lightly stuffed interior also means less cleanup for my parents, too. $16.98 for a pack of two // chewy.com.

Bow Wow Pay homage to Old Glory on the 4th with this Red, White, and Blue Dog Bow Tie from Chloe & Max. Your humans will bask in the “oh-so-cute!” compliments coming from other revelers, while you’ll stay chic, snug, and comfy throughout the holiday celebrations thanks to the bow tie’s adjustable Velcro-latch design. $14 // puccicafe.com.

Anchor Clanker This nifty Nautical Dog Collar from Etsy vendor CollarShiloh can be customized to fit Fido’s tastes. (Personally, I’m in favor of a rose gold clasp and ‘D’ ring for my order.) Complemented by an apropos anchor motif, the design is handmade in a quality cotton fabric with a heavy-duty webbing core for added strength and durability. $13.50-$25.25 depending on size and fabrication // etsy.com/shop/ CollarShiloh.

Pearl is a feisty and opinionated Jack Russell Terrier born on November 7, 2013. Her favorite treat is organic, non-GMO natural chicken jerky, as she likes to take care of her girlish figure. Pearl loves dog TV and sunbathing on the aft deck of her human’s yacht, which is moored on the H dock at Elliott Bay Marina in Seattle.

She offers plenty of more spaces to gather: Nice, wide walk-around side decks lead to an exceptional entertaining area on the bow with a removable sunshade, and the master stateroom can be converted to a media room with the press of a button, drawing the blinds on the hull windows so that you can fully enjoy the built-in TV and audio systems. That master stateroom is one of the largest you’ll find in this class, serene and spacious with a walk-around island berth, built-in nightstands and vanity, plus opening side hull windows. Whether you’re out for a family weekend excursion or an extended sea voyage, the 2020 Sirena 64 is sure to provide a smooth ride and luxurious accommodations. Designed by Italian architect Tommaso Spadolini, the Sirena 64 employs natural light as a key feature, with floor-to-ceiling windows, and open deck configurations. The fiber-to-resin ratio of the boat’s Hybrid Carbon superstructure provides high strength and stability with lower weight, allowing for increased interior volumes. The main salon has large lateral windows with unobstructed exterior views for guests. The living area includes sliding glass doors that connect the indoor space to a covered outdoor aft deck. A large recreational foredeck can be used for sunbathing, for sharing meals at a dinette, or even for a dip in the optional whirlpool. The galley is equipped with stove, 40

oven, refrigerator, and Miele dishwasher, plus a cutlery and dinnerware set for eight people in the adjacent dining area. The bridge deck includes a wet bar, an electronically controlled sunroof, lounge seating, and a wide-open sun deck. The party can continue on the flybridge, with a refrigerator, icemaker, and two chaise lounges, plus beautiful teak flooring. Astern, a hydraulic swim platform with a hot-water deck shower provides amenities at both ends. Two lower-deck configurations are available in a three-or four-cabin layout, with each suite offering abundant daylight throughout. The owner’s suite includes a dual seating area, plus a full-beam head with a separate washroom and shower areas. A separate crew cabin aft also has direct access to the engine room. In total, the boat features four heads

with granite countertops, plus one for the optional crew cabin. At the helm, electronics include the Garmin Platinum Package, with a 7410 10” chartplotter in the crew cabin, an AIS600 transceiver, and a GC10 CCTV camera in the engine room and flybridge. There is also a KVH TracVision TV6 satellite TV system, with a 50” LCD screen, and a Fusion RA205 audio system to provide entertainment for long voyages. If seas get rough, the Seakeeper 16 gyroscopic stabilizer can help with roll reduction, and is controlled ontrolled from the helm or flybridge. With two inboard Caterpillar C12.9 engines, the Sirena 64’s powertrain provides 1,000 horses to reach up to 28 knots, with a cruising speed of 16 knots and a range of 1,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. Much of this speed comes from the highly engineered, low-drag, canoe-shaped hull. Variable-speed bow and stern thrusters allow for precision maneuvering, plus ZF joystick steering controls on both the helm and flybridge.

47’ Lowland 471 Long Range Trawler Available now from Waterline Boats, this classic trawler was built tough, but also boasts beautiful, comfortable style throughout.

44

Built in 1984, this Dutch steel trawler was built for hard work but designed for comfort as well. Boarding amidships, visitors will note the long, stepped profile and aft wheelhouse. The side decks, foredeck, and aft deck are all covered with teak-strip planking atop steel. Stepping inside, the roomy interiors are mostly covered, from bow to stern, with curved wooden joinery. Plentiful windows and sliding skylights flood the space with natural light and provide water views for guests, even while seated. A wood-lined companionway with curved stairs leads down into the salon, which can comfortably accommodate six to seven people, and features an L-shaped, unholstered settee and an Ekornes Stressless recliner with ottoman. The forward galley is accessed a few steps down from the salon, opposite a circular dinette, which can be converted to a double berth. Galley amenities include a Seafreeze coldplate refrigerator and freezer, curved Corian countertops, a Kenmore trash compactor, a pressurized water system, and ample storage. There is also a small Tappan convection microwave oven and a cooktop that can be modified with a portable hot plate. Forward is the guest cabin, with a double berth, a guest head, and a Splendide washer/dryer unit. The master stateroom is spacious with two berths arrayed at right angles and a private head and shower to starboard, plus a writing table to port. The aft deck is fully covered by a hardtop and features a round cockpit table and a padded, semi-circular settee above the fantail. The aft deck is separated from the wheelhouse by double bi-fold wooden doors. Despite the location of the helm so far aft, the dual helm seats are positioned for a commanding view forward over the long length of the boat. The boat can be navigated by either the impressive wooden steering wheel or with a joystick on the rudder hydraulic system. Navigation controls in the helm are, in most cases, commercial grade, including a hydraulic bow thruster and a hydraulic drive. Ultrasound examination of the fire-resistant steel hull was performed in 2012, confirming that it was in good condition throughout. Hull and topsides were also painted with Awlgrip, while the bottom was blasted and repainted in 2013. The boat’s 250-horsepower diesel Volvo-Penta TAMD60C engine provides plenty of power and endurance, with a range of 1,800 nautical miles or more at 7.8 knots.

It’s little secret that our own San Juan Islands are a world-class summer destination, drawing boaters from near and far with their stunning natural beauty. But even for frequent visitors, there are still treasures waiting to be found. Look no further than the gems tucked inside two new guides—one a culinary exploration by the well-known chef of Roche Harbor Resort, the other a discovery tour written specifically with boaters in mind. Combine these authors’ “book smarts” to set sail on a cruise of your own choosing: Prep a few galley-friendly bites, plot a course to a spectacular secluded bay, plant yourself on the aft deck, and enjoy Washington’s crown jewel islands.

Bountiful Bites

BOOK AND RECIPE PHOTOS ALL BY CHARITY BURGGRAAF

Within the pages of the award-wining Roche: A Culinary Journey Through San Juan Island’s Illustrious Harbor cookbook, esteemed chef and previous NWY “Galley Gourmet” columnist William “Bill” Shaw of Roche Harbor Resort (rocheharbor.com/dining/), along with James Beard Award winning author James O. Fraioli of Culinary Cookbook Creations (culinarybookcreations.com), take readers on a mouthwatering tour, sharing the recipes behind tried-and-true favorites from the Resort, plus other delicious dishes that celebrate local island ingredients. And they’ve shared with us a sampling fit for a pleasure cruise: Three, easy-to-prep appetizers highlighting the bounty of the sea and starring the likes of sweet Dungeness crab and summer spot prawns. (The cookbook is currently available exclusively at the Resort; be sure to snap up a copy next time you’re by!)

Caprese Skewers with Balsamic Glaze Using a rosemary stem as a skewer gives this simple appetizer an impressive presentation and imparts a rosemary aroma into the fresh mozzarella. Serves 8 1 pint fresh mozzarella, packed in water and crafted into ⅓-ounce balls ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil ¼ teaspoon red chili flakes ¼ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper 1 pinch sea salt 16 fresh rosemary stems 16 cherry tomatoes 4 ounces fresh basil 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze (available at most markets) Drain the water from the fresh mozzarella container. To the container, add the oil, red chili flakes, salt, pepper, and stir to combine the flavors. Cover with the lid and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 52

Starting at the tip of the rosemary, cut the rosemary stems into 4-inch lengths using a slight angle to create a sharp woody tip. Grasp the leafy tip of the rosemary 1½ inches from the tip and strip the lower leaves in a downward direction with your thumb and index finger from the woody stem leaving the top 1½ inches of leaves intact. Wash the tomatoes, then slice off the stem end, creating a flat surface so the tomato can stand up straight. Remove all of the basil leaves from the stems and cut the larger leaves in half to make a total of 16 leaves measuring at least 1½ inches in length. Remove the seasoned mozzarella balls from the refrigerator, then drain and discard the oil. Wrap each mozzarella ball with a basil leaf, then skewer with the woody end of the rosemary stem through the top of the uncut end of the cherry tomato. Adjust the skewered cheese and tomato to allow the skewer to stand on a serving platter with the sliced tomato end resting on the platter and the leafy end of the rosemary pointing upward. Repeat the procedure with the remaining rosemary skewers. At this point, the caprese skewers can be held refrigerated until ready to serve. When ready to serve, drizzle a small amount of balsamic glaze over the cheese and tomato.

Dungeness Crab Quesadilla From the moment the Dungeness Crab Quesadilla was first tossed onto a buttered grill, it was an immediate success at Roche Harbor Resort. The buttery-golden exterior of the flour tortilla surrounding the warm, creamy crab, artichoke, and melted cheese is to die for.

Serves 6 ½ cup fresh Dungeness crab meat, drained ½ cup coarsely chopped artichoke hearts (un-marinated) ¼ cup + 3 tablespoons shredded parmesan cheese ¼ cup peeled and sliced paper-thin yellow onion 1 cup mayonnaise 6 (6-inch) flour tortillas, Gordita style ⅔ cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and chopped fine 1 teaspoon minced Italian flat-leaf parsley 4 tablespoons butter 12 sprigs fresh cilantro ¾ cup salsa, of your liking In a medium bowl, combine the Dungeness crab, artichoke hearts, ½ cup of the parmesan cheese, yellow onion, and mayonnaise, and mix well. Reserve in the refrigerator until the next step. Spread the flour tortillas over a clean work surface, then place ⅓ cup of the crab mixture in the center of each tortilla. Spread the crab mixture evenly over the surface of the tortilla followed by 2 teaspoons of parmesan, 2 tablespoons of cheddar, and 2 tablespoons of chopped tomato. Fold each filled tortilla in half. Place in a shallow dish, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until needed. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Melt the butter and place the crab-filled tortilla in the buttered grill or pan for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden-brown. Turn and repeat. Place the crab quesadillas on a cutting board and cut in fourths. Arrange the quesadilla triangles on a serving platter and garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve with a side dish of your favorite salsa.

Prawn and Avocado Margarita Cocktail with Dungeness Crab In the San Juan Islands, local spot prawns are a delicacy. They are fun to catch and enjoyed throughout the summer in a variety of recipes, including this one. This savory cocktail also features another island favorite—fresh Dungeness crab. Makes 4 Servings ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup peeled and chopped onion ¼ cup peeled and chopped carrot 2 tablespoons peeled and chopped fresh garlic 1 lemon, cut into quarters and juiced 1 cup dry white wine 3 cups water Prawn shells from the peeled prawns 1½ pounds uncooked fresh spot prawns, peeled, deveined, and tail removed (reserve the shells) 3 medium-sized avocados 1½ cups Fireworks Cocktail Sauce, recipe follows 1 cup finely chopped celery 1 lemon, cut into wedges 1 lime, cut into wedges 4 jalapeños ½ pound fresh Dungeness crab meat 12 sprigs cilantro

simmer until the prawns begin to curl. Pull a sample prawn out of the water and slice it in half. If the center of the prawn is opaque or white, the prawns are perfect! Note: Do not overcook the prawns; cooking slowly and removing from the heat just as they are turning opaque maintains their natural moisture and delicate texture. Take the pot of cooked prawns off the stovetop and pour into the metal colander or spaghetti strainer over an open sink. Once the prawns are drained, submerge the strainer into the iced water, and let the prawns quickly cool by moving the strainer up and down repeatedly in the water. Once the prawns are chilled, rinse the prawns and refrigerate immediately Slice the avocados in half, remove the pit, and remove the avocado meat by scraping a soup spoon between the skin and the meat of the avocado. Gently slice the avocado meat into 3/4-inch bite-sized pieces. Set aside. Place the chopped avocado, chilled cooked prawns, and cocktail sauce in a medium-sized bowl and gently stir (without smashing the avocado) until the cocktail sauce evenly coats the ingredients. Using a 12-ounce chilled martini glass, fill the bottom of each glass with 1/4 cup of chopped celery, followed by 2 tablespoons of cocktail sauce. Divide the prawn, avocado, and cocktail sauce mixture evenly between four martini glasses.

Fill a large bowl with ice and water and place a colander or metal spaghetti strainer in the bowl. (This is going to be a quick cooling station for the cooked prawns.) In a large stockpot, combine the celery, onion, carrot, garlic, lemon quarters, lemon juice, white wine, water, and the prawn shells. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and continue cooking for 20 minutes to release the flavors into the liquid. Drop the prawns into the simmering water, and slowly

Garnish each glass with a lemon and lime wedge that has an angled slice through the fruit but not through the peel. Attach the lemon and lime on the glass edge through the sliced fruit. Make the same angled slice halfway through the whole jalapeños and hang one onto the edge of each glass. Top the prawn mixture with fresh Dungeness crab meat and a few sprigs of cilantro. Serve immediately.

Fireworks Cocktail Sauce

In a separate bowl, blend the wasabi powder and water together until a smooth consistency is achieved. Add the wasabi mixture to the ketchup mixture and combine thoroughly. Place in a nonreactive container and refrigerate overnight before using. Note: the wasabi and water mixture should always be combined separately for the best result. The Fireworks Cocktail Sauce can be refrigerated for up to 10 days.

Makes 2 cups 1½ cups Heinz tomato ketchup 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons pure prepared horseradish (not sauce) ¼ cup wasabi powder ¼ cup water In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, lemon juice, and horseradish.

Beautiful Bays Need the complete 411? The San Juan Islands: A Boater’s Guidebook - 2nd Edition (bluelatitudepress.com) by Shawn Breeding and Heather Bansmer is dialed up for you. Recently updated for its second edition, the in-depth cruising guide is chock full of detailed itineraries, charts, maps, anchoring locations and marinas to visit, as well as recommendations for shoreside explorations, as well. This definitive guidebook is written for mariners by mariners, as the Anacortes-based authors have spent years sailing in and around the San Juans aboard their Westsail 32 Om Shanti sailboat with their dog, Salty. As such, they’ve found a few breathtaking, yet off-the-beaten-path bays for boaters to enjoy in (relative) peace; head for one of these top picks from the pair, and for more, snag that guidebook in area marine supply shops, such as Fisheries Supply or on the pair’s website listed above.

Griffin Bay, San Juan Island Just six miles south of the hustle and bustle of Friday Harbor, this large bay is often empty, despite room for hundreds of boats. This is really the only anchorage that offers easy boat access to the American Camp half of the San Juan Island National Historical Park. Excellent protection from summer southerly winds is offered, as well as a few places to land a dinghy and hike the miles of well-maintained trails—enjoy the mile and a half long sandy South Beach and become educated on the Pig War from the American Camp perspective. Westcott Bay, San Juan Island While Garrison Bay offers the best access to the English Camp portion of the San Juan Island National Historical Park, it’s more often than not crammed with boats during the summer cruising season. Just around the corner is the much larger Westcott Bay, which offers the same great protection and anchoring as Garrison Bay, as well as access to the trail system and the beautiful historical park at English Camp. (Added bonus: Our friends at Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. are also right there; take your dinghy into the dock to enjoy some fresh oysters and cold beer or wine while overlooking the bay.) 56

Watmough Bay, Lopez Island A relatively short trip from Anacortes, tucked into the southeastern corner of Lopez Island is the fjord-like Watmough Bay. Surrounded by undeveloped preserve lands, the lack of houses dotting the hillsides give a real feeling of remoteness and solitude. For hikers, a leg burning hike to the top of 450-foot Chadwick Hill offers expansive views of the bay, San Juan de Fuca Strait, and surrounding mountains. For those more inclined to lounge, a sandy beach at the head of the bay makes a nice place to stretch your legs or picnic off of the boat. Several public mooring buoys have also been installed for the protection of the eelgrass bottom and it’s also a good strategic location to wait for a favorable tide when heading south toward Seattle or west out to the Strait.

Now, 14 years later, as the next installment of the renowned race takes off this month, another crew of self-described “scrappy” sailors is looking to mimic the spirit of the Morning Light story aboard the Seattle-based Sonic, a 3rd generation TP52 owned and managed by Marek Omilian. Omilian purchased Sonic, his first-ever boat, in 2018 after his passion for racing was ignited during the Clipper Round the World Race in 2017-2018. Omilian grew up sailing center boards on the lakes in his native Poland during his childhood, but then didn’t sail for decades until moving permanently to Seattle in 2013. He joined the Seattle Sailing Club, heading out on weekends and participating in a few races, but soon felt the need for more speed. “I envied those faster boats,” he recalls. “I would see those crews get out there, get done fast, and then sleep in their own beds at night. I promised myself that if I ever bought a racing boat, it would be one that can finish the race before last call at the bar.” Thus, the decision to sign up for the Clipper. At first, Omilian thought of trying just one leg, but then decided to take the plunge and participate in the full race. Four weeks of intensive training, a few what-have-I-gotten myself-into moments later, Omilian set sail on what he calls the most “life-opening experience” he could ever imagine, citing the Australian leg from Sydney to Hobart that skirts the western edge of the continent as his favorite just for the sheer challenge. He was hooked and took yet another plunge by purchasing Sonic in late 2018 after his return. “People were kind of looking at me with really big eyes, like this is your first boat?” he says, with a laugh. “I did a little bit of research, probably not enough. But sometimes you just have to do it.” Sonic herself is a 52-foot-long TP52 designed by Farr Yacht Design and built by Cookson Boats in New Zealand, and Omilian has now spent the past three years racing along the West Coast and building the team that will take her on Transpac 2021. He recruited Scott Smith, who has perhaps the most experience

60

sailing TP52s of anyone in the area, dating back to the original MedCup series in the early 2000s. Smith acts as the master tactician, and Omilian, in somewhat of a rarity, is both owner and boat manager aboard. The extended crew numbers 17, composed of sailors with differing experience levels, but all who sail for the love of the sport in between family, work, and general life commitments. (Omilian himself is the Managing Director of Value Prism Consulting in downtown Seattle.) “It’s like building any organization, one must fill key roles, create backups, make sure people align with core values and culture,” he explains of the process. “This is very true for team Sonic.” Everything is viewed through the team’s four core values of safety, respect, teamwork, and commitment, tenets that Omilian took away from his own Clipper race experience. Though it’s Omilian’s first Transpac, and even the first race ever for several members of the crew, the enthusiastic, competitive bunch has been carefully selected to guide Sonic on her journey. “We have a lot of dinghy sailors since this boat is so light,” he says. “It’s the same mentality to sailing single-handedly, you have to be on your toes, and have a 360-degree vision of what’s happening at all times.” In addition to building the team, Omilian has been building relationships with non-profit partners in an effort to give back and raise awareness for certain causes. “I feel like we’re really missing an opportunity here in the U.S. to leverage these big boats for some good.” Thus, for the 2021-2022 racing seasons, Sonic is looking to raise $100,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and will brand the boat with the organization’s banner. July 17th is the big start date for the race, and Omilian is like a kid at Christmas describing his excitement over the thrill, the speed, the team, all coming together in culmination. “It’s like the Rose Bowl of sailing,” he says. “And you’re sailing downwind at what feels like light speed, gybing in the squalls, surfing across the waves. There’s nothing like it.” Time will tell how the crew of Sonic fares as she makes her way to Waikiki, but perhaps they have a little history on their side as they race against more experienced teams (and even a vessel sponsored by that Roy E. Disney again). Remember the Samba Pa Ti that charged by Morning Light in 2007? Well, Sonic has one of her sails aboard, recently borrowed from another boat to fill a gap in their wardrobe ahead of the race. Perhaps a bit of its competitive spirit will prevail again, flying high above Sonic. >> Live tracking of the race will be available via transpacyc.com, and for more information on Sonic, the crew, and the latest news, visit sonictp52.com.

TI GH T L I N E S BY MARK YUASA

Nab that Crab MARK YUASA shares his tips for catching the celebrated Dungeness crab in the seas surrounding the San Juan Islands (and recommends a few local haunts to enjoy after dropping your pots). Nabbing some Dungeness crab is an easy and fun way to spend time on the water, so make sure to stow some crab pots and bait on the boat before you head north for Washington’s idyllic chain of islands. The San Juans, known as Area 7 South (San Juan Islands/Bellingham), is expected to open for crabbing in mid-July through late September (it was closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week in 2020 and that shouldn’t change in 2021); the section referred as Area 7 North (Gulf of Georgia region) is expected to open by mid-August through late-September. (For specific season dates and rules, visit: wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfishing-regulations/crab.) The 2020 Dungeness crab sport catch was decent with 1,751,406 pounds (compared to 1,676,401 in 2019 and 1,587,764 in 2018) caught in all open Puget Sound, San Juan Island and Strait of Juan de Fuca areas, and 2021 numbers should look similar. There’s a reason the islands draw so many in search of the beautiful, bright orange Dungeness: In the San Juan Islands alone, the crab catch total last year was 525,291 pounds. Participation levels remain high especially in the summer—July through September. In 2020, the number of catch cards issued was 213,831 (192,798 in 2019), and the winter fishery had 36,459 (23,578 in 2019) issued. Strong currents are prevalent in the island chain, so weigh down your crab pots with 10- to 20-pound weights (rebar works well). Also make sure you’ve got plenty of line between your buoy and pot. Hundreds of derelict pots are lost each season and are detrimental to other sea creatures. The daily limit is five male Dungeness crab in hard-shell condition with a minimum carapace width of 6¼ inches. Once you’ve dropped your crab pots, while away the wait at one of the many exciting places throughout the islands. One could spend weeks here and not even touch the surface, but given a choice, the two largest islands—San Juan and Orcas—are must-sees and the nearby crabbing is excellent. At Moran State Park (parks.state.wa.us/547/Moran) on Orcas Island you can hike, bike, or drive up to Mount Constitution (2,409-foot elevation) for panoramic views of surrounding area and Mount Baker. At Buck Bay Shellfish Farm (buckbayshellfishfarm.com), spend the night or simply enjoy freshly harvested oysters, Dungeness crab, shrimp, clams, 62

and other seafood. On San Juan Island, take a hike at Lime Kiln Point State Park (parks.state.wa.us/540/Lime-Kiln-Point), a 36-acre day-use park, and you might even see orca whales passing nearby. Tours of the historic lighthouse built in 1919 are available at the interpretive center during summer. One way to soak in the amazing wildlife and scenery is a kayaking adventure with Crystal Sea Kayaking (crystalseas.com) or Outdoor Odysseys Kayak Tours (outdoorodysseys.com). And then there’s the food. The pizzas at Hogstone’s Wood Oven (hogstone.com) in Eastsound are cooked to perfection. Cure your hunger pains at Cask and Schooner (caskandschooner.com) in Friday Harbor with steak and fresh-cut fries, a meat pie, or blackened salmon sandwich. Or, order a plate of deep-fried calamari or cheese curds, then wash it down with a pint or sampler of beers at the San Juan Island Brewing Company (sanjuanbrew.com) in Friday Harbor. (One note: Do your homework ahead of time as some island businesses and activities are open seasonally or are operating on a limited basis due to Covid restrictions. For the most up-to-date details, go to visitsanjuans.com). Fingers crossed, a fresh catch awaits you in the pot; the plump, sweet, succulent meat of which can be put to very delicious use in the crab quesadilla featured on page 53. Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

Context Matters Learning from a leader: Columnist PETER SCHRAPPEN breaks down the strategy and tactics behind the recently successful push to pass House Bill 1107. As I make my way through the thousand or so pages of Grant by Ron Chernow, I am struck at how many times President Ulysses S. Grant stumbled in his life. Heck, his parents named him Hiram Ulysses Grant (which translated to the unfortunate initials H.U.G.) until his application to West Point was incorrectly filled out, and he didn’t have the gumption to correct the mistake. Grant was to later say to his wife, “You know I have an ‘S’ in my name and don’t know what it stand[s] for.” There’s his drinking, his propensity for games of chance, and the run-ins with his dad and father-in-law to name just a few literal and figurative stumbles he had along the way. During the 1850s, he even dropped out of the Army after successfully leading the U.S. in multiple battles in the Mexican-American War during the 1840s. He found himself selling cords of wood on the streets of St. Louis to provide food for his family just a decade later. And I haven’t even arrived at his unpopular presidency. Okay, all that said, what truly stands out on the flip side is how well he performed when he was in the system of order and discipline provided to him by serving in the U.S. Army. There’s a reason he is revered for his servant style of leadership as he led the Union to victory over the Confederacy. When placed in the other systems of his life (i.e. non-battle, non-military times), he’d easily be mistaken for anyone on the streets sparing for change. A bill is no different than this “context matters” frame. It’s just like fishing, too. The key in fishing is to match the hatch. Successful laws must have bait that matches the appetite of elected officials, too. Sometimes, it means making your idea so irresistible that they gobble up the lure, umm make that idea, and let it run all the way into our awaiting arms. House Bill 1107 serves as another reminder that strategy and tactics and a well-thought-out plan can catch the interest of the political players. 66

You may remember that this bill was the measure that improved the time permitted for boats visiting Washington state. To much Zoom fanfare, Governor Inslee signed this bill into law on May 3, 2021, and it takes effect on July 25, 2021. Now, these out-of-state boaters can offer their vessels for charter when the captain is provided. Plus, these boats, with or without chartering, can now visit year after year for 180 days. It gets even better to learn that this so-called tax preference does not expire until 2031. This bill, like Grant peddling wood, could have easily flailed around like many other bills. For those keeping score, 1,077 bills were introduced and only 331 made it all the way through our legislative process. Fortunately, we served up a bill that had no controversy, no opposition that couldn’t be ameliorated, and no big fiscal hit to the state. What it had was a modest change to an already existing bill passed in 2015 that incrementally turned up the dial. To paraphrase my inner Neolithic man, “boats good. More boats more good.” This quasi-fishing strategy, the Zoom framework, and the system of legislators on the right committees set in motion a cascade effect that has Washington back in the game with just one more favorable boating law. Flying to Roche Harbor the other day to share the news with Worth Avenue Rendezvous attendees reminded me just how fantastic this system is. You can download a handy one-pager for more info on this new law at nmta.net/files/Downloads/GA/Tax.pdf; plus, read all about recently-passed House Bill 1107 at tinyurl.com/chws9483. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

ASK NI G E L—A B OA R D Zvi BY NIGEL BARRON

Point of Departure NIGEL BARRON is running through his pre-race checklist, and prepping for Zvi’s delivery to Los Angeles, in anticipation of the July 17th start to Transpac. As I write this, I’m looking out across the boat yard at Zvi, the R/P 55 that we’ve hauled for one last time before heading down the coast to Long Beach, California, where we will start Transpac 2021 on July 17th. The to-do list is getting shorter, but there are always the inevitable new items that pop up. Before departure, we will complete a safety inspection and get the delivery sails and equipment on to the boat. Fortunately, a lot of the equipment we want on board for the delivery is required for the safety inspections, so there is not much duplication. A multitude of items need to happen to prepare for any boat trip, a few more when it’s an 1,100-mile offshore delivery. Every delivery or trip starts with logistics. A few weeks back, we took a quick day trip to Los Angeles so we could check out the marina and slip where we’re headed. We reserved a storage locker, checked out the hotel, and found the required Hawaii-approved COVID-19 testing facility. It was nice to see everything before we arrive on Zvi (potentially in the dark) after traveling south for several days. It’s also nice to get these things addressed early, because when we fly back before the start, we’ve got mandatory skippers’ meetings, COVID-19 testing, a container to load, and racing sails to fit. Hauling out one last time in Seattle, we have time to check the bottom and sand it out to 1,000 grit. That’s probably a little obsessive, but I could, so I did. We’ve had the sail drive and engine serviced and are using the yard time for a few more modifications to the deck. All the new halyards and sheets are on the boat, and the last of the new race sails have arrived. We plan to go out for a practice before the coastal delivery to check all of them and hopefully, decrease unpleasant surprises. Something will come up, but with the spares and the crew, we hope that we can take care of whatever it is to ensure we arrive in Los Angeles safely and in a reasonable time. To some extent, the delivery is going to be a shakedown for 70

the race. It’s going to be a test of our food planning and delivery, sleeping situation, water maker, and fuel and battery status. This is all going to be important data as we start to determine how much fuel we need to bring. At 7 pounds per gallon, less fuel is an easy weight savings. We have our various communication systems up and running and have sent some test emails and downloaded some GRIB files. We’ve got an IridiumGo and Fleet Broadband, along with a couple of satellite phones. As our start approaches, we’ve also started to pay more attention to the weather patterns that are developing. Interestingly, La Nina officially ended within a week of when it did in 2015. Does this mean the race would be similar to 2015? We’re not sure, but we’ve spent some time evaluating the routes taken in 2015 and the big picture weather. Transpac does a nice job with their YellowBrick trackers that allow you to go back and replay prior races. We’ve also started speaking more frequently with our weather routers, who are helping with both the deliveries and the race. Next month, I’ll hopefully be writing and sharing some pictures of a fantastic—and uneventful—trip from Seattle to Los Angeles. >> Track Zvi’s trek to Hawaii live starting July 17th at transpacyc.com. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. This month, he is taking part in the Transpac 2021 race captaining Zvi, a Reichel/Pugh design and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN

Learning the Ropes Together The pandemic pause, a renowned racing coach, and sailors seeking the sea: Columnist DOUG HANSEN on the origins of an ultra-collaborative racing group that welcomes champions and novices alike.

It was a little over a year ago that we found ourselves in a global situation without much in the way of a solution. No gatherings, no toilet paper, and a whole lot of uncertainty was all that we could count on; and for the sailing community that thrives and defines itself on adventure and exploration, it was a massive departure from the status quo. Within this new normal, one group in the far upper left of the map found themselves on an island they could not leave, surrounded by beautiful bodies of water, and a community of friends looking for something positive to focus on while keeping their distance. Inspired by the world’s predicament, the group found sailing to be their salvation. One member of this group, Ron Rosenburg, had combined his career and passion and risen to the world’s elite ranks of sailboat race coaching. He is a regular face at nearly every world championship, heavily involved with several Olympic campaigns, and can be found in the debrief room of top professional teams all over the world. Most importantly, he has called Orcas Island home for over fifteen years. Together with a handful of other avid sailors, Ron put together a local program to support double handed sailing in the time of social distancing with the goals of simply getting out on the water and becoming better sailors. Starting off with a couple of second-hand J70 sport boats, a few sets of hand-me-down sails, and a couple moorings at West Sound marina, they began to sail. Fast forward to today, and the aptly named “J-Pod” is an active shorthanded one design fleet that races every week with nine boats and half a dozen more on the horizon. Interest is only growing as the fleet welcomes all comers and pushes everyone involved to become better. What sets this group apart is the core of what makes it special: They are out there for each other with a common goal of working together to learn. All the boats involved are practically identical, with everything from the same type of sail trim to mast tune shared among the fleet. Even the boats themselves are open to all comers, inviting new and seasoned sailors out on the water in the hopes 72

they catch the bug of shorthanded fleet racing. One big caveat, supported by everyone involved, is that the boats do not touch each other. They never have, and if everyone cooperates, will never collide while on the water. It is simply not part of the program. With the roots of the whole program centering around single household sailing, the fleet is keeping with tradition and encouraging boats to take to the water with limited crew. There is a method to this madness and Ron explains how the level of involvement by the crew in sailing these boats shorthanded is exponentially more engaging than being a small cog in a big machine of a traditional keel boats. What is amazing about the entire process is how well it is working for all levels of sailors. In few places of the world would we find first-timers, high school sailors, regional contenders, and world champions set out on the same boats every week with a common goal. Every day begins with a setup and tuning session with the entire group sharing information over the radio and working to get all the boats as evenly matched as possible. This overwhelming focus on communication and inclusion forces even the most aggressive racer to check their ego at the dock and become part of the program, sharing what they know and learning from people who they may have otherwise not known. At the end of the day, everyone gathers at the proverbial home base around the outdoor picnic tables at Orcas Island Yacht Club and conversation flows well into the evening. Whether they are a national champion or a true novice, everyone is out there to become better, and in doing so help everyone around them become better. Furthermore, this group is harkening back to the absolute heart of what makes sailing so special—spending time with like-minded people looking to enjoy themselves, something that there has been far too little of recently. Sailing is the winner in this fleet; and I, for one, am very excited to see what they are going to become and hope more groups take note.

P ORT OF CALL BY LORI EASTES

The Coastline of Croatia Embark on a seven-day charter cruise with Worth Avenue Yachts to explore this stunning country that skirts the Adriatic Sea.

Upon your arrival at Split Airport in Kaštel Štafili, Croatia, your pre-arranged transportation will be waiting to whisk you away on a seven-day yachting adventure that charts the coastline and explores the islands of a country rich in history, beauty, and charm:

Konoba Škrapa, a vivacious Mediterranean restaurant that offers an array of fresh seafood. Those with a love for Italian food should look no further than the world-famous Mirkec Pizzeria, a family-owned restaurant reviewed over 1,000 times on Google.

Day 1 A brief 35-minute car ride from the airport will take you into the historic village of Trogir on the coast of the Adriatic and the northernmost spot of your journey. Charming to say the least, Trogir is situated on a small island connected to the Croatian mainland and the island of Čiovo by bridges; the rust-colored buildings and radiant turquoise water here create a contrast unlike anything else. As you approach the quaint harbor, you’ll find your yacht waiting for you. After enjoying a freshly prepared al fresco lunch aboard as you drink in 360-degree views of the bay, you can head out to explore the Kamerlengo Castle. Hidden within this stone fortress is a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Built by the Venetians in 1420, and once at the forefront of this nation’s defense, the castle is now open to tourists for exploring. If you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy a meal at the quaint

Day 2 Continue your journey to Split, a must-see destination. Known for having the perfect balance of modern and ancient life, with buildings dating back to the Roman Empire, Split is rich in history. The bustling harbor is filled with luxury yachts and eager visitors, who flock to the town’s family-owned wineries, restaurants, and high-end cocktail bars. Whether you choose to view it from your yacht or take a closer look via your tender, you will be enchanted by the stone architecture and street musicians, some of which can be heard in front of the Baroque church. The area is also known for having some of the best wind-surfing conditions in the world at Zlatni Rat beach with winds coming off the waters of the Adriatic. The consistent winds create the ideal environment for any wind-related watersports.

Day 3 Time for a cruise along the Brač coastline. Famed for its white pebbled beaches, the island of Brač is a requirement when yachting in the Adriatic. Despite its proximity to Split, Brač attracts less of a tourist crowd, thus allowing you to be truly immersed in the local culture of the island. Allow your dedicated yacht crew to prepare a private beach picnic for you and your loved ones. Then, spend the afternoon in the water on one of the many water toys offered onboard. (Jet skiing through the Adriatic while the warm summer breeze kisses your skin is an unparalleled experience.) While in the area, be sure to try the olive oil from the Dalmatia region! The olives are of a rare variety called buhavica and there are over a half-million trees. Olive cultivation dates to the Venetian years. Back in 1655, the Venetian senate insisted that the island be carpeted with olive trees and imposed fines upon anyone with the temerity to damage the trees. Day 4 Begin the next day in the yacht-filled harbor of Hvar. You will notice this quaint town has a surprising number of visitors, attracting thousands to the island each year. If you love to shop until you drop, this is the place for you, with a traffic-free downtown corridor that is wonderful for walking (wear the appropriate footwear!) and browsing. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world, the Blue Cave that lies about an hour’s trip from the town is truly a sight to behold. The cave’s marvelous sapphire color is created by the sun as it bathes the inside of the cave through an opening in the roof that allows the beaming light to reflect against the sand. Day 5 Often regarded as “Little Dubrovnik,” Korcula is a small town with a medieval flare located on an island of the same name. The island can be accessed by ship but does not offer ferry services after the summer, so the secluded nature allows for a more intimate and peaceful experience. Spend the day doing watersports before sunbathing on the sundeck. The Croatian sun is strong, so be sure to remember your sunscreen. If you’d like to check out the scene on land, there are several noteworthy places to see, including the LD Terrace Restaurant. Their modern spin on the local cuisine offers a unique dining experience only found here, perched on the edge of the sea.

Basking in the afternoon sun almost always feels good and in Mljet, the summer sun is beaming from May-September (peak months). The warm summer weather is perfect for reading a book or doing some afternoon yoga on the sundeck. As the day wanes, toast to the good life with a fresh glass of the bubbly and enjoy a five-course meal before stargazing. Day 7 Whether it’s the limestone-paved streets or the views of the glistening Adriatic Sea, the beauty of Dubrovnik never ceases to amaze; begin your last day exploring its many attractions. Take a stroll down Stradun Street in Old Town. Here, you’ll find high-end shopping and dining options that stay true to the culture of Dubrovnik. For an elegant dinner in town, look no further than Nautika Restaurant. Nestled in the cliffside rock formations, this restaurant allows for a dining experience you’ll never forget. Or, enjoy Michelin-star level dining at 360, which specializes in sophisticated Mediterranean fare prepared from fresh ingredients. Unleash your inner party animal at the Culture Club Revelin. Situated inside of a 500-year-old medieval fortress, this is a party experience like no other. This 2,000-capacity space boasts incredible city views and a mesmerizing light display. Although your trip may be over, the memories of the sunny days spent in the azure waters of the Adriatic are sure to linger well after you return home. Lori Eastes is thrilled to be on the team at Worth Avenue Yachts because chartering private yacht vacations combines everything she loves: party planning, travel, and boats. With a background in hospitality, Lori is committed to providing an unparalleled experience for her clients. To chat with Lori about making your yacht vacation a reality, give her a call at 206.209.1920.

Day 6 On the sixth morning of your private yacht charter, wake up surrounded by the sapphire-colored waters of Mljet. Legend has it, after surviving a shipwreck, Odysseus found shelter in a cave on the coast of Mljet. There, he was struck both by the beauty of the island and of the nymph Calypso. Because of his newfound love, he stayed there for seven years. Anchor your yacht in front of the so-named Odysseus Cave for a firsthand look at the small tunnel carved in limestone. 75
