Taking the Plunge “We just had to embrace the uncertainty.” This rousing declaration from Seattleite Heather Brewer sure is sticking with me as we finish up an issue that is chock-full of inspirational boaters shaking off the prolonged pandemic pause—and seizing exciting new adventures on the water. Take Brewer as an example. She and her partner Paul Bultema made the best of the pandemic induced, work from home lifestyle by operating “reboatly” from their Nordhavn 43, all the while traveling in the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, and up the Pacific coastline on a leap-of-faith voyage you can read about on pages 50-57. Then there is our own Doug Hansen, who after two years of cancellations and delays, finally raced his way around Antigua during Sailing Week in early May. He recounts the thrilling ride aboard Ocean Breeze in “Pilots of the Caribbean,” starting on page 58. The ride doesn’t stop there. Lori Eastes takes us to the rugged, raw expanses of Greenland aboard a Custom Explorer Yacht like no other in Port of Call (84-85); Seattle Yachts chats the best in locally made tenders for your onshore explorations in Expert Take (pages 68-69); and Randy Woods previews the epic 2022 Vic Maui race from Canada to Hawaii that will honor the late, great Robbie Robinson of Signature Yachts (page 32). If you are seeking new thrills for yourself this summer, also be sure to check out the vessels that can take you there: There’s the all-new Cantius 46 from Silver Seas Yachts for luxury cruising (pages 38-39), the beastly-fast Brabus Shadow 500 offered by Jeff Brown Yachts (pages 42-43), or you could go for a classic with Deerleap, the 1929 beauty seen in this month’s Broker’s Best on pages 46-47.

From the Pup Deck Editor’s Note: We’re big fans of dogs on deck, so we couldn’t resist gathering more details from Paul Bultema and Heather Brewer (the subjects of this month’s Working Reboatly feature) on how they managed traveling the world with this month’s cover girl. Their top tip? On the recommendation from a veterinarian friend, they ensured Mira stayed well fed in heavy seas by freezing her food in ice trays so that she could easily gobble it up (and get a little extra hydration from the melting ice particles). Next time, they’ll be freezing some extra with new puppy Hala in tow, too. (Squee!)

Personal Connections

Feeling the Love Editor’s Note: Our inboxes—and hearts— have been full this summer with thank yous, kudos, and newsy notes on your amazing accomplishments. Keep ‘em coming! Kate, Here is a story your readers may be interested in: Seattle-based Alex Simanis and crew won California Offshore Race Week aboard Pell

Editor’s Note: This month, Northwest Yachting’s Doug Hansen recounts his Sailing Week adventures in Antigua on pages 58-65, but he’s not the only staffer with a connection to this classic in the Caribbean. Publisher Michelle Zeasman-Gibbon has accompanied her husband on the race and our Craig Perry shares his own experiences here: “I was fortunate enough to race in a couple of Sailing Weeks in Antigua. The last one was in 2001. My wife Kim and I were married on a Sunday in the San Juans and left on Monday for Antigua Sailing Week. As we say, we spent our honeymoon with 20 of our best friends. Our accommodations were two sailboats that were chartered by the owner for the crew to stay. As the races moved around the island, so did our lodgings! The atmosphere is amazing with some sort of party every night on the beach and the sailing was good as it gets. I had to promise Kim that we would return next year to have a proper honeymoon without racing involved. Kim held me to that and we returned the next year, although not during Sailing Week.”

16

Mell. This is a remarkable accomplishment, but even more amazing is the fact that they achieved it racing on a renovated 27’ plywood boat built 35 years ago. Simanis’ boat, Pell Mell, is a Point Bonita 27, built in 1987 by Dave Sutter, flying under the burgee of the Sloop Tavern Yacht Club. Fair winds and following seas! Dennis Palmer @KelleyMoore: So excited that Pink Bateau is featured in the June issue of NW Yachting Magazine (Hattie is too!). Hi Michelle, Thank you for your sponsorship during the 2022 Summer Launch Party! The event was an absolute success thanks to your support. We hosted 65 clients and over 650 linear feet of yachts, filling the marina with vibrant orange burgees all weekend. A copy of Northwest Yachting was included in every gift bag and the most popular publication on the dock. I’m looking forward to bringing even more copies next year! [ HONORING CULTURE ]

RENDERING COURTESY OF JONES & JONES/ STEPHANIE BOWER, ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSTRATION

First Nations Canoe Carving House to Open in South Lake Union South Lake Union has undergone a dramatic makeover in the last decade or so. Now, one more change is coming to the Seattle lakefront to celebrate the maritime heritage of this region’s indigenous people. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF) have completed the design stage of a Canoe Carving House, which will be part of the Northwest Native Canoe Center, and now scheduled to begin construction this summer. The community-initiated project will celebrate the canoe culture that is dominant among the Pacific Northwest coastal tribes and will be located on the west shore of Lake Union in Lake Union Park, near the Center for Wooden Boats. The Carving House will provide insight into different varieties of canoe-carving techniques used for centuries by First Nations cultures in the region. Built with a “living roof,” using local camas plant species, the Carving House will include a carved Welcome Figure on the lake’s beach. The facility will provide space for an ongoing Native canoe-carving programs and storage for canoes, which will be launched into the lake. Visitors will be able to view

the carvers as they build new canoes, while docents will be on hand to explain the Native artisans’ skills and beliefs used over generations. “This first phase of the Northwest Native Canoe Center has been a dream of ours for many years,” said Mike Tulee, executive director of UIATF. “The facility fits directly into our mission and will provide educational and cultural opportunities that reconnect Indigenous people to their heritage and will strengthen their sense of belonging.” The project, first proposed in the mid-1990s, went through an extensive design and permitting process in the 2000s, plus a 2015 campaign to secure capital for construction. The work has culminated in the current design of the Carving House, plus a separate, larger facility, called the Welcome Canoe House, featuring educational interpretive displays of Native maritime culture, a gift shop, and a catering kitchen. Combined, the two buildings, made from large, polished timber beams, will encompass about 6,000 square feet of space. Now that the Carving House project is getting underway, UIATF has launched fundraising efforts for the Welcome House portion of the project. Donations for the next phase can be made via: unitedindians.org. 23

[ SAVING THE SOUND ]

Port of Seattle, Aquarium Collaborate on Kelp Project In an effort to document the role kelp forests play in the ecosystem of an underwater urban environment, the Port of Seattle Commission recently approved a project with the Seattle Aquarium to conduct research and survey the extent of kelp forests in the waters of Puget Sound. The project, which begins this summer, will focus on Seattle’s Elliott Bay waterfront, as well as the heavily trafficked east and west waterways of Seattle Harbor. Funding for the project was included in the Port’s 2022 budget, and the findings are expected to be released to the public early next year, the Port said. Not only are kelp forests an essential habitat and refuge for countless species of birds, fish, and marine mammals, they also “absorb carbon from the atmosphere, thereby helping to mitigate the impacts of ocean acidification,” said Fred Felleman, commissioner of the Port of Seattle. Erin Meyer, director of conservation programs and partnerships at the Seattle Aquarium, said the new partnership will apply the facility’s underwater survey techniques and technology to protect and restore the health of the urban kelp forest, using artificial intelligence to interpret the data.

The project will make use of the Aquarium’s remotely operated underwater vehicle, known as Blue2, to map the extent of current kelp beds and determine additional sub-tidal monitoring sites where the Aquarium can keep track of changes in the size of the kelp forest. Data collected by Blue2 will be added to information supplied by existing King County water quality monitoring stations to develop a better understanding of the ecological structure of urban kelp forests and study their potential contribution to coastal resilience. Earlier this year, the Port and the Seattle Aquarium also joined forces to begin work on the new Ocean Pavilion building, an expansion of the Aquarium’s current waterfront location. The new facility, targeted to open in 2024, will add a 48,000-square-foot structure, to be used for educational and environmental marine programs, and a series of gently sloping pedestrian areas to strengthen the connection between downtown Seattle and the waterfront district. For more information on the kelp forest research project, and findings in the future, visit: seattleaquarium.org/ocean-policy-and-advocacy.

[ PUMP OUT, DON’T DUMP OUT ]

State Parks Invests $700K to Prevent Sewage Pump-out in Washington

To help keep the waters of Puget Sound and other state waterways free of sewage contamination, Washington State Parks has added an additional $700,000 in funding to encourage local boaters to dispose of their vessel sewage via new or upgraded pump-out stations. The funds will be distributed through grants from the state’s Clean Vessel Act (CVA) Grant Program. Under state law, Puget Sound and many of the adjoining waters are considered No-Discharge Zones for vessel sewage, as determined by the state’s Department of Ecology. The legislation was enacted in 2018 to protect sensitive shellfish habitats and area beaches from contamination. One of the largest CVA-funded projects will be a $300,000 plan to install a floating restroom at Cutts Island State Park, near Gig Harbor. Other projects involving the building,

maintenance, or replacement of dockside pump-out locations will be doled out to the Port of Port Townsend, Tyee Marina in Tacoma, Port Orchard Marina, the Port of Poulsbo, the Port of Kingston, West Sound Marina on Orcas Island, and the City of Chelan. Grant recipients must provide a 25% match and contribute more than $250,000 in state and local funding. In addition to funding new or replacement pump-out projects, the CVA Grant Program also funds the annual operation and maintenance of more than 100 pump-out and dump station facilities across the state. Last year, more than $400,000 in grant funds were sent towards annual operating and maintenance expenses of these facilities. More information about project specifics and tips on sewage disposal for state boaters can be found at: pumpoutwashington.org. PHOTO COURTESY OF SAN JUAN ISLANDS VISITORS BUREAU

[ PROTECTING OUR SOUTHERN RESIDENTS ]

State Launches Orca Recovery Website What’s black and white and blue and green all over? Orca.wa.gov, Washington State’s new website for the care, protection, and recovery of Puget Sound’s threatened Southern Resident orca whale population. The site, launched by the Governor Jay Inslee’s Salmon Recovery Office in May, just in time to promote Whale Awareness Month in June, provides a wealth of information about the state of the Southern Resident population and tips on what boaters can do to ensure that orcas and other marine mammals can thrive. One of the most useful guides for protecting orca whales is a list of 49 recommendations created by the Southern Resident Killer Whale Task Force over a two-year period from 2018 to 2020. Most of the recommendations involve methods to increase Chinook salmon abundance (the key food source for orcas), decrease disturbance of whales made by vessel traffic noise, reduce exposure to pollution in whale habitats, suggest funding mechanisms to support implementation of whale protections, address climate change and future growth in the region. Orca.wa.gov is also a clearinghouse for general orca information, such as the current Southern Resident population totals—now just 74 confirmed whales

counted, compared with 99 in 1995. While the current count represents a 30-year low in the Southern Resident population, a new calf was discovered in K Pod in April, the first such sighting in that pod since 11 years ago, giving some hope that a rise in population may be underway. The site contains links to a wide range of resources about whale information, including the Be Whale Wise program, jointly run by British Columbia, Washington State, and the federal government, providing tips on how boaters can maintain a safe distance from orca pods. (This last one may be an especially pertinent reminder given the hefty fines leveled at a pair of local boaters who got too close earlier this summer.) Another resource on the site, called The Whale Trail, provides information on more than 100 viewing sites where visitors can watch orcas along their annual West Coast migration. “We hope this website will provide valuable information and inspire everyone to join our efforts to save these beloved whales,” said Tara Galuska, orca recovery coordinator for the governor’s office. “There is much work to be done and it will take all of us pulling together to save them.” Visit the site for further information and resources: orca.wa.gov.

THE CURRENT BY RANDY WOODS

Robbie Robinson (third from left) and the 2012 Red Sheilla crew. PHOTO COURTESY OF VIC-MAUI INTERNATIONAL YACHT RACE

Remember the Titan Vic-Maui 2022 returns this month with honors memorializing the late Robbie Robinson, a beloved Northwest sailor and the longtime owner of Signature Yachts.

After being cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, the iconic Vic-Maui International Yacht Race from Canada to Hawaii will resume this month, with the first-place trophy being named in honor of local boating legend Robert “Robbie” Robinson, who died after a year-long battle with cancer in 2019. For the first time in its 57-year history, the first-place award in the Lahaina class category will be named the Robbie Robinson Beneteau Trophy, memorializing Robinson’s unwavering support for Northwest racing and sponsorship of the Vic-Maui. Robbie Robinson began his lifelong love of sailing at age five in Hawaii. After serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Eisenhower, he founded his first yacht brokerage, Performance Yachts, in Bellingham before moving on in 1990 to establish the highly successful Signature Yachts brokerage on Seattle’s Lake Union. Signature Yachts represents Amel Cruising Yachts, Beneteau Oceanis, First Series, and Fountaine Pajot Catamarans. For more than 30 years, Robinson was a respected mainstay of the Northwest cruising community, sailing the West Coast waters countless times with his spouse Cesar Quirino and his beloved Siamese cat, Rumor. He was also a crew member aboard Jim Innes’ Red Sheilla in the 2012 Vic-Maui race. 32

The race itself, hosted by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and the Lahaina Yacht Club, is the longest distance boat race to begin from the West Coast. The teams will set sail on two different days by division (July 4 and July 6) in Victoria, British Columbia, and finish 2,308 nautical miles away on July 22 in Lahaina, Maui. During the race, the boats must navigate the tricky currents, heavy freighter traffic, and foggy weather through the Strait of Juan de Fuca before turning southwest at Tatoosh Island and riding the tradewinds off the summertime North Pacific high-pressure system that will carry them to Hawaii. As of early June, 14 sailing teams have been confirmed as taking part in the 2022 race, many of which are based in the Northwest. Nine of the teams comes from the Vancouver, B.C., area, one (Xiomara) is based in Sidney, B.C., and another (Millennium Seagull) hails from of Bainbridge Island. At the conclusion of what is sure to be a thrilling race, an awards gala will be held on July 23 in Lahaina and the Robinson Beneteau Trophy will be bestowed. A special tribute to Robinson and his storied career will also be incorporated into the evening. For more information on race details, visit: vicmaui.com.

Crafted from a blend of Tocai Friulano, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer grapes grown organically in the volcanic soils of the Willamette Valley, Oyster White is an ideal tribute to two multi-generational companies in the Pacific Northwest. 2022 Cruisers Yachts Cantius 46 Meet the all-new Cantius 46 available from Silver Seas Yachts, a super sleek model that provides seamless performance for Pacific Northwest cruising.

38

En route to Northwest waters this summer is the latest Cruisers Cantius 46 luxury yacht, one of the first Cantius models to be powered by the new Volvo IPS 650 engines, which top out at 35 mph and cruise at 30 mph. The diesel inboards, when coupled with a Garmin glass cockpit package, provide smooth, effortless responsiveness and power. The intuitive controls include joystick docking and steering, touch-screen monitors, and Position Hold technology, making it suitable for both beginner and expert boaters. All helm switches and digital controls are within easy reach and marked for seamless navigation. A powered sunroof also brings more natural light to the helm. But the helm is only the half of it. The salon features an L-shaped dinette aft of the bolster helm chair, with bench seating for four and an entertainment center, along with large windows providing breathtaking panoramic views. The galley includes an elegant solid surface countertop,

microwave, dual-burner cooktop stove, convection oven, a stainless steel refrigerator/freezer, and a sink with designer faucet. Notable features in the Cantius cockpit include sliding glass doors that open from the salon, a mini-fridge, a cockpit shower, and plenty of bench seating, either under the blue skies or covered by the powered retractable sun shade. A triangular table is strategically situated in the center of the L-shaped bench, where guests can enjoy meals from the outdoor grill that’s built into the transom and can be covered with a countertop when not in use. A stainless steel safety gate divides the cockpit from a wide, submersible swim platform, providing more

opportunities for recreational fun. More cabana-style seating, adjustable lounge chairs, and a built-in cocktail table can be found on the foredeck, as well, for sunbathing, sharing drinks, or taking in the alfresco environment. The 46 offers a full-beam midship owner’s stateroom, complete with an en suite head and shower stall, voluminous storage space, a cozy port lounge with a recliner sofa, and a flat panel TV. The owner’s suite is also flooded with natural light through sizable side windows. A forward VIP stateroom in the bow includes a full walk-around, queen-size berth, and exclusive access to the day head, with separate showers.

2022 Brabus Shadow 500 Boasting rip-roaring acceleration times and massive torque, the Shadow 500 from Jeff Brown Yachts combines the best in Scandinavian design with German engineering. Some new arrivals feature wide-beam luxury and sumptuously appointed staterooms, with ample room for entertaining and socializing on extended cruises. This is not one of those boats. The 2022 Brabus Shadow 500 is less about comfy sofas, gourmet galleys, and entertainment centers and more about the adrenaline rush of twin XS Pro V8 FourStroke outboards from Mercury Marine hurling you through the waves at 50+ knots. With a twin-stepped, 20-degree deadrise hull and a deep-V bottom, the 500 provides exceptional maneuverability and control. This 30-foot beast is perfect for dive excursions, waterskiing, sport fishing trips, day cruising with friends, or for use as a nimble yacht tender. It’s shallow 2’8” draft allows it to go where many larger boats can’t reach. Whatever use is needed, it’s a multifunction workhorse. The pilothouse features a tinted windshield, two helm seats, and either three or four aft seats, depending on the package chosen. The helm’s extended navigation package includes Simrad VHF RS40, Mercury VesselView displays, Halo20+ Broadband 4G radar, trim and bow thruster controls located on the wheel hub, engine remote control, and dual 12” chartplotters. Just under the helm, there is a walk-in head compartment with a sink, a fresh-water faucet, a mirror, electric flush, and added storage space.

But just because the Brabus 500 is fast doesn’t mean it skimps on comfort. A T-top version of the 500 Shadow has an open-air seating area and a wraparound windshield, but the cabin model features an enclosed cabin with leather seats, Esthec composite decking, and an electric retractable roof. A wet bar option includes an aft electric grill, a wet bar module, and an integrated top-loading refrigerator under the helm seat. The foredeck on all models has open-air, V-shaped seating, with a cushioned bench on the port side and across the bow. There is also a triangular table that can be used as a guest gathering spot or can be removed and converted into a sun pad. Other optional Shadow 500 features include a leather steering wheel, an intelligent steering module, electric trim tabs, connectivity for IOS and Android, an aft-deck shower, stainless steel light mast, underwater lights, LED deck lighting and an LED roof spotlight, a Mercury theft detection system, and an extended audio package, with a 10-inch subwoofer and four signature speakers.

BROKE R’ S BE ST BY RANDY WOODS

1929 80’ Custom Classic Fantail Own a piece of Northwest maritime history with Deerleap, an 80-foot, wood-hulled Classic Fantail yacht that has plied West Coast waters for nearly a century. This month’s Brokers Best listing is a true historic treat for all boaters. Built in 1929 by Vancouver, British Columbia’s Hoffar-Beeching Shipyards, Deerleap is an 80-foot, wood-hulled Classic Fantail yacht that has plied the waters of the West Coast for nearly a century and is still going strong at her current moorage in Port Orchard. For the last 40 years, the craft has had the same owner, who has painstakingly maintained the vessel and burnished its reputation for understated elegance. Still appearing like a vision straight out of the Roaring Twenties, the handsome yacht was originally built for Andrew McLimont, president of Winnipeg Power and Light. Deerleap was first powered by Hall-Scott gasoline engines and was built specifically for excursions from Mexico 46

to Alaska, providing maximum views through its wide windows, wraparound teak decks, and roomy foredeck. Today, the layout is nearly identical to the original design, with a large observation salon and teak-lined formal dining room midships on the main deck, featuring a mahogany period table for up to eight people under a crystal chandelier. Signs of the yacht’s opulent heyday include silver service and serving pieces, cut-crystal decanters, and dinner china embossed with the ship’s name and logo. The compact galley is located forward, equipped with a period O’Keefe & Merritt four-burner propane stove and electric oven, a microwave, a trash compactor, and a full-sized LG refrigerator and freezer. To port, the window

over the galley sink lets in plenty of natural light and stunning views. Two steps up from the galley, a spacious pilothouse is fitted with a fully modern suite of navigation electronics and bow-thruster controls to make mooring easier. A day head has been added just aft of the pilothouse. Aft of the main deck living area, French doors open to what is perhaps the vessel’s most notable feature: a spacious, covered aft deck surrounding a central teak dining table. A new Sunbrella fabric shade provides protection for the semi-circular seating area that lines the fantail. Deerleap has had a colorful history since it was commissioned. For a few years, it was conscripted for military service during World

War II, when it was re-fitted with heavy-duty Vivian 120HP diesel engines. Later, it was purchased by mining engineer Campbell Church, serving in his fleet of chartered yachts. During this period of the 1950s and ‘60s, celebrities such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, John Wayne, and the Kennedys were among the notable luminaries on board. Since being auctioned off to the current owner in the 1980s, Deerleap has undergone extensive restoration efforts, including the grand circular stairway that provides access from the salon to the four staterooms. Forward to starboard is the full-beam owner’s suite, complete with en suite head and shower. Just aft of the owner’s room are two staterooms with crossed over/under bunks and a vanity and shaving sink.

Aft of the stairway is a shared head and shower, and further aft, on centerline, is another full-beam stateroom, featuring raised twin bunks. Despite its age, Deerleap handles well under a competent skipper and line handler, the owner says. The engines have also been upgraded with twin Gardner 6LX 125HP engines, which replaced the old Detroit Diesel “Screamin’ Jimmies,” making it a demonstrably quieter cruiser. Besides the noise reduction, the newer engines make the vessel incredibly efficient for its size, burning four GPH at 1,200 RPMs to reach a cruising speed of 7.8 knots, giving it a 2,400-nautical-mile range. The stately vessel has won several awards at the Classic Yacht Association (CYA) Annual

Wooden Boat Festival, but it does not sit idle like a museum piece. Every year, the boat cruises for 16 to 20 weeks up to the Broughton Islands of Northern B.C., and occasionally to Alaska. Describing the seaworthiness of Deerleap, the current owner says he once sailed the yacht off the Oregon coast “lying completely on his sides” during a fierce storm. “I never doubted her for a moment,” he added. This will be the first time in 40 years that Deerleap has been available on the market, so this is a must-see opportunity for those interested in Northwest maritime history. Through September 25, the vessel will be the in Broughton Islands, but it will also appear at the Victoria CYA Wooden Boat Festival, September 1-5, in Victoria, BC. 47

A love connection, a leap of faith, a new work/life balance: A Seattle couple embarks on the adventure of a lifetime while working remotely aboard their Nordhavn 43.

REBOATLY

SNAPS FROM THE COUPLE’S SWEEPING LOVE STORY AND 18-MONTH ADVENTURE TO BRING THEIR NORDHAVN HOME TO SEATTLE.

By Kate Calamusa

For some couples, a third date can mean meeting up at a coffee shop, taking in a movie, or enjoying a meal together. For Paul Bultema and Heather Brewer, a Seattle-based couple that met online just before the pandemic struck, that third meet-up was a bit more out of the ordinary. Bultema asked Brewer to hop on a flight to Guatemala with just a pair of one-way tickets in hand. “I’ve always been an adventurous person, and I’ve lived in countries all over the world,” says Brewer. “And when Paul and I met, it was this instant connection as he had also traveled extensively, in fact to almost 100 countries. I texted him back and said ‘sure’….and we met at Sea-Tac airport the next day.” It was March 2020, and the trip was a whirlwind as the pair traveled through seven Central American countries that all shortly closed to visitors behind them. But the five-day trip had only strengthened their new bond. Shortly after returning home to the stay-at-home order, they decided to try living—and working—from Bultema’s 31-foot Sea Ray to spend more time together, bringing Paul’s beloved Vizla, Mira, along as a member of the crew. The short-term experiment turned into a five-month sojourn in the San Juan Islands. “There was no enclosure, the space was tight, we had one plug, no shower, one hot spot, limited water, and a generator strapped on the back,” Brewer recalls, with a laugh. “But we figured it out. And we were as happy as could be.” As the pandemic persisted, the pair began to think bigger, as in the need for a larger vessel to accommodate their growing dream: to continue to work “reboatly”. 51

ISLAND TIME: THE TRAVEL SCHEDULE FROM THE 2020 SUMMER SPENT ABOARD THE SEA RAY IN THE SAN JUANS.

They checked in with their respective companies— Brewer works for PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Bultema for Amazon Web Services—and received the go ahead. Then in late 2020, after months of combing listings, they found it: A 2007 Nordhavn 43 that suited them and their needs, perfectly. The only trouble was it was moored in Vero Beach, Florida, but in keeping with the couple’s go-for-it attitudes, they bought it sight unseen on December 4, 2020, and by Christmas had gotten themselves, and Mira, across the country to sign the papers. They started an Instagram account the next day, @workingreboatly, and began chronicling what would become an epic and enriching journey that would take them almost 18 months and over 10,000 nautical miles on the return trip home to Seattle. At the time, Bultema thought he had about seven months before returning to the office, so the pair spent a hurried six weeks prepping. The first step was to outfit the boat and make upgrades so the two could stay connected as they traveled. They hired a program manager to streamline the process, installed all new Furuno electronics, and an updated communications package that included cellular and satellite systems. The hotel they were staying in allowed them to ship provisions to its address and those goods were almost exclusively bought on, you guessed it, Amazon. Hoping to learn along the way, but also admitting their naivete at the helm, especially offshore, they hired a boat captain to shepherd them through the waters. On February 25, 2021, they cast off from Fort

Lauderdale, leaving U.S. waters for the Bahamas, where they spent six weeks. Then they traversed through the three locks of the Panama Canal; swapped in a new captain, Jean-Claude ( JC) Schubel; and, headed out to the La Perla Islands. They then cruised to Costa Rica, and on north to Chipas, Mexico, then spent seven months exploring the Sea of Cortez beginning in June 2021. “Between Covid restrictions, weather patterns, and all the other natural delays of traveling, we didn’t really have it all planned out, and the itinerary kept changing, but that was part of the magic in the end,” says Brewer. “It allowed us to really experience all the little stops we made, especially the unexpected ones. We just had to embrace the uncertainty.” There were certainly challenges along the way— poor connectivity, hurdles in passing customs (interestingly, Mira often required the most paperwork), and mechanical issues that included a middle-of-thenight fuel injector line leak—but the duo credits their pre-voyage agreement for the good days outweighing the bad. “During the trip, we had one golden rule: Communication had to be honest, open, and direct,” states Bultema. “It made all the difference between us, and with the captain.” They definitively agree on their best day. En route to Mexico, off the Gulf de Fonseca, Brewer interrupted Bultema on a work call, insisting he come topside. “She had never done that before, I knew it had to be something spectacular, so I dropped my call and ran outside.”

53

“It’s not even something I could have imagined to put on a bucket list. I mean we were scared, but we did it. We just jumped in. So much of this experience was learning to overcome fear.” Heather Brewer It was indeed special—in every direction, as far as the eye could see, they were surrounded by an enormous pod of spinner dolphins. “The water was just frothing with dolphins,” he recalls. “They say that there are 600,000 spinner dolphins in the world, and I think half of them were with us that day. We stopped the boat, threw out a line, and in 5,600 feet of water, we jumped in. The dolphins were encircling us, not one or two, but dozens of dolphins, and the noise was deafening.” To top it all off, as they were swimming, a blue whale surfaced on their starboard side. “It’s not even something I could have imagined to put on a bucket list,” says Brewer. “I mean we were scared, but we did it. We just jumped in. So much of this experience was learning to overcome fear.” The pair checked quite a few items off their pre-existing bucket lists, too. In addition to the day spent with the dolphins, the pair also swam with nurse and bull sharks and the famous wild pigs of the Exumas. They snorkeled and spent so much time scuba diving the depths that they earned their Advance Open Water certifications. They hiked through rain forests, visited cultural sites, and fished, with Brewer even spearing what Bultema half-jokingly called an “almost prehistoric-looking lobster.” And though traveling solo could sound isolating, the couple says it was anything but, both due to the

54

friendly, welcoming, and helpful locals they met along the way—and within the larger community of Nordhavn owners. “From day one, the online community has been amazing,” says Brewer. “They had so many great suggestions. We could pose a question to them on issues that popped up, or for boating advice, and almost instantly they’d respond with ideas.” One such instance of aid occurred shortly after the pair left the Sea of Cortez in February of 2022 and began navigating north towards U.S. waters through the “Baja Bash.” This 950-mile run up the wild and desolate Pacific coastline is known for consistently strong winds, large swells, and nasty surface chop, and this stretch was where Brewer and Bultema ran into their biggest mechanical issue: that aforementioned middle-of-thenight fuel line leak. “It was 3 a.m.; there were 12-foot seas; it was not a good place to have to figure out a repair,” recalls Bultema. A couple of texts to other Nordhavn owners lent the pair ideas for a temporary solution (the answer turned out to be a combination of zip ties, tin foil, and silicon from an ice tray to stop the leak). Further discussion helped them track down the necessary part, a spare from a tractor if you can believe it, and the line was repaired all within 24 hours. “The kindness and graciousness of the strangers we met along the way still never ceases to amaze us,” the pair states.

BREWER WELCOMES HER CREWMATES BACK ABOARD: “IN ALL THIS, I LEARNED MY HAPPY PLACE IS ON THE BOAT, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN, WITH OUR DOG AND THE ONE I LOVE.”

56

THE PAIR’S WORKING REBOATLY EXPERIMENT IS NOW A WAY OF LIFE AS THEY CONTINUE TO CRUISE WITH LAPTOPS—AND WANNABE LAP DOGS—IN TOW.

On March 19th of this year, the crew aboard the Nordhavn 43 crossed the border and spent the spring traversing up the California coast before returning home to Seattle in time for a summer exploration of beloved haunts like the San Juan Islands, where the pair’s working reboatly experiment all began. “The trip made me appreciate Seattle, the Northwest, and home, all that much more,” adds Bultema. “The quality of the boating here really is second to none.” Buoyed by that love of boating, and the one they’ve found in each other, the pair say that their initial leap of faith has become a way of life. Both continue to work remotely and Bultema recently gave up his condo to become a liveaboard. The two have also added another crew member for their next adventure: A brand-new Vizla puppy named Hala to keep full sister Mira

company on wherever the next journey takes them. “In all this, I learned my happy place is on the boat, in the middle of the ocean, with our dog and the one I love,” says Brewer. “It’s most magical experience and one I will be forever grateful for.” Brewer’s concluding statement is quite apropos. Though eventually they’d like to upgrade to a larger vessel, perhaps a Nordhavn 55, the couple’s next journey will be again be on the 43 that has taken them almost 11,000 nautical miles together and whose name is none other than Gratitude. >> Follow the pair’s continuing journey on their Instagram, @workingreboatly, and the dogs’ perspectives on their page, @vizsladivas. 57

Sailing the Ocean Breeze: Northwest Yachting’s DOUG HANSEN and his fellow Smoke racers find their second wind aboard a storied Volvo Ocean 70 at Sailing Week in Antigua.

/

It was way back in 2019 that I first heard the siren call of the Caribbean, as myself and my fellow Smoke racing program members began bandying about the idea of racing a charter boat in this most tropical, yet taxing, of settings.

THE SAILING WEEK CREW. LEFT TO RIGHT, BACK ROW: BILL HESTON, SAM HANSEN, KEITH WHITTEMORE, JOE RUSSELL, STEVE TRAVIS, SAM MASTERMAN, DOUG HANSEN (AUTHOR), LOOMIS HESTON, JOSH MAY, BRYAN RHODES, KEVIN CALLAHAN, JOE WILLIAMS, JOHANNNES SCHWARZ, AND TABEA HERBST. 60

To a Northwest-based sailing team, it was immediately an intriguing proposition, and one that soon took shape in the charter of a Volvo Ocean 70 for none other than Antigua Sailing Week. Steve Travis, owner of Seattle-based TP52 sailboat Smoke, has always made a point to take his racing program on the road. Over the years, previous trips have included races in Cowes in England, Sardinia in Italy, Cork in Ireland, and St. Barth’s in the Caribbean. But nothing quite as ambitious as a wave crushing offshore machine like the Volvo Ocean 70 had come along—and the thought of racing her was thrilling. (So much so, in fact, that when Travis asked what I thought of the entire idea, I believe my response was a resounding “#$@^ YEAH!”) The number of crew started inching upwards, as we pulled from our normal racing team and added in some longtime friends from the Northwest sailing community. Flights were booked, vacation scheduled, and things were all looking good for us to have an amazing time at the 2020 Antigua Sailing Week. Unfortunately, as the world made its way into March 2020, our crew and the entire planet realized that no one was going anywhere for quite a long time. The race was cancelled, the dream sat on the sidelines.

“At the end of the week, we all looked at each other; bruised, tired, but not broken and far from beaten, having finished up the final race nearly three minutes ahead of our Lithuanian rivals on the water.” But after nearly two years of uncertainty and more hand sanitizer than anyone has time to measure, things began to shift. By late 2021, there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and somehow the cards began to fall back into place for Antigua Sailing Week to return to the calendar and run from April 30 to May 6 in 2022. With a fair bit of skepticism if whether it would happen at all, the crew rebooked flights, packed bags, and before we knew it, we were on a flight headed south for the first time in a long time. The island of Antigua, known as Wadadli to the native Caribbean people, is situated in the northeastern Caribbean and is a long-standing centerpiece in the world sailing community. A strong British influence on the island combined with the historic Royal Navy shipyard in English Harbor made the island a haven for sailors seeking a place to refit and repair during the early trips to the Americas. This culture of seamanship and craftsman has continued, resulting in the island being the winter home to many of the world’s most iconic sailing yachts. Being such a hub of sailing in the Caribbean, it’s little wonder then that 2022 marked the 53rd running of the Antigua Sailing Week. For over half a century, the premier racing event has attracted top-level competitive racing programs and regatta sailors; more than a hundred yachts ranging from 24 feet to well over one hundred feet long participate in the Caribbean winter regatta. The fleets include a wide range of competitors with participants in everything from bare boat charter fleets—where crews draw their boat number out of a hat at the beginning of the regattas and stay on the boats—to full grand prix programs with dialed-in boats and crisp carbon fiber sails. There is something for everyone. From the race management side of things, keeping this circus going and working smoothly takes a herculean level of logistics and support, both on and off the water.

The sailing instructions included nearly 50 different course options utilizing 17 preset marks spread between two separate racing areas along the southern shores of the island. The whole regatta was separated into two fleets of boats, with the larger, faster boats grouped together and the bare boat charter fleets comprising the other group, that alternated between the two arenas. Every day wrapped up with music and awards at the Antigua Yacht Club, and the festivities carried on well into the evening for some. Four hard days of racing were divided by a lay day mid-week to give crews the opportunity to rest up, reset, and repair the boats and themselves. Given that many people travel very long distances to attend the regatta, the long week format gave the whole thing an endurance-like feel, and being able to continue to improve throughout the week was critical. Our boat for the week, Ocean Breeze, is legendary in her own right. Originally built as Telafonica Blue, she competed in the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race and then went around the world again in the 2011-2012 race under the name Sanya. She is an absolute monster of a wind-powered machine; to simply call her a “sailboat” is doing a disservice. The mast measures in over one hundred feet off the water and downwind, the sail plan works out to be an astounding 7,260 square feet. This is paired with the canting keel mechanism that pivots the

10,000-pound bulb forty degrees to windward, bringing the righting moment to an eyewatering level. All of this together with hydraulic adjustments, running backstays, and an interlinking winch system makes a TP52 look as simple as a Laser, Ocean Breeze is truly a wonder of engineering to sail. While the boat itself was impressive, it was the job of the owner and boat captain Johannnes Schwarz, along with his first mate Tabea Herbst, to teach us how to get the thing around the racecourse. That was somewhat of a monumental task with only two days of practice. Things shook out to Schwarz working with the afterguard and coaching the trimmers through the maneuvers. Herbst was responsible for running the pit and managing all the hoisting and dropping of the sails. This is no easy task considering everything is on locking halyards supporting top-down furling spinnakers— with 3-to-1-ratio tack line all coordinating around the six grinders turning the correct winch in the right gear at the right time with some of those winches turning the opposite direction. The coordination and orchestration of the maneuvers was astronomically intense both physically and mentally and absolutely pushed our team to a new level when it came to communication and timing.

/ Everything on the boat had to be done as a process, with one step needing to be completed before the next one started. While this is not a major issue when you are scheduling your sail changes on a calendar during an around the world race, in short course buoy racing it added a level of unimaginable complexity. For example, in order to tack the boat, the call would go out 30 seconds before the tack to drop the weather dagger board into the water, which involved releasing the halyard that holds it up, followed by the bow team seating the board into the cassette. As that was happening, the new leeward runner was being brought on and pre-loaded, next as the boat begins to turn, the keel is swung through the tack to the new high side as the sails pass over. Once completed, the weather dagger board is hoisted out of the water using the pedestal-driven weather primary winch, and finally, the traveler is brought to weather on the same winch. After all of that, it is probably time to tack again. All the while, we were dodging and weaving, short tacking the beach to get out of the current, and avoiding the traffic of the smaller fleets that we were constantly working our way through, and that was just the upwind. It was not until halfway through the regatta that we began to really feel like we could measure up against our competition, the Volvo 65 Ambersail, crewed by a great group of sailors from Lithuania. They were a very well sailed program with a lot of experience on the boat and were a real challenge to keep pace with, especially in the

early days of the regatta. Although the boats were slightly different in performance and design, we quickly learned that if we wanted to beat them on the water, we needed to be flawless in our maneuvers and clean in our tactics and strategy. Thankfully, our team learned quickly and by the end of the regatta we found ourselves battling at the front with them, only missing the class win for the week by two points after four intense days of racing. At the end of the week, we all looked at each other; bruised, tired, but not broken and far from beaten, having finished up the final race nearly three minutes ahead of our Lithuanian rivals on the water. We felt fantastic about how far we had come and how hard we pushed to get there. I can’t even begin to touch on all the people who worked to make this incredible event possible, and the amazing team that I was lucky enough to sail with at Antigua Sailing Week. There is no way I would be able to tell all the stories and share all the memories we made in the space here, and it is hard to believe that so much came out of one single week of sailing. And in the end that is what the sport is about: Trophies come and go, boats come and go, but the friendships and memories that we build along the way is really the whole reason for doing it. >> The 54th edition of Antigua Sailing Week will take place April 29-May 5, 2023. E XPE RT TAKE BY ALEX KNUDTSON & PETER WHITING / PHOTO COURTESY OF BULLFROG BOATS/SEATTLE YACHTS

Love me Tender ALEX KNUDTSON and PETER WHITING of SEATTLE YACHTS talk tenders— and the tough and rugged options from the newly acquired Bullfrog Boats line. Seattle Yachts acquired Pacific Northwest-built Bullfrog Boats last fall; what was it about this particular brand that you found so attractive, both for you as expert brokers and for your clients? Knudtson: I have always loved the look of Bullfrog boats. I grew up in Homer, Alaska, and the first Bullfrog I saw was a safety red, 17-foot Sport Utility on the back of a large research vessel while heading out fishing. A few years later, I got a job running that same boat. From my first ride, I was really impressed with its suitability and handling in foul weather. Whiting: And I was first introduced to Bullfrog Boats in the early 2000s when a client of ours purchased one for a boat that we had built for him. I was so impressed with them that I ended up purchasing one for myself, which I had for several years before selling it with the Northwest 45 we had built. They are all great boats but my favorite is the 11.5’ Yacht Tender. Not all tenders are created equal. What are a few factors you recommend boaters consider when shopping for a tender? Whiting: Size is obviously important. Buyers should be sure to purchase the correct and complementary size for the boat it will go on. But keep in mind, the primary mission of the tender, as well. Ask yourself: Is it a shore boat, a fishing and crabbing boat, or just a fun runabout? Knudtson: Exactly. For example, in the Northwest, it’s quite popular to fishing and crab from your tender, so stability and durability also play a large role. This is where the Bullfrog line shines in comparison to inflatables. It isn’t an issue to drag a loaded crab pot over the rail, or snag the side with a hook while a fish flops around. Bullfrog Boats have long been known for their durability; what is it about the design of the line that helps these tenders stand against the rigors of the sea? Knudtson: The solid welded aluminum semi V-hull, combined 68

with very durable and buoyant foam filled tubes, make for a comfortable and dry ride on any adventure. Whiting: Roto-molded, foam- filled tubes, fitted to aluminum hulls: all these features make Bullfrog Boats ‘in-deflatable,’ or in other words they are virtually indestructible. Aluminum is the strongest and most durable material for hull bottoms; running up on rocky beaches or glancing off of rocks while exploring will not hurt a Bullfrog. The Professional Series Bullfrogs have a flat floor, open design that allows for easy customization. What are some of the custom features you have helped customers install? Whiting: Equipping them with pot pullers for crabbing and shrimping is one such example of customization we can do. We’ve also installed trolling motors to help hold position while bottom fishing. Knudtson: We also recently built a mobile marine pump-out boat with a 250-gallon holding tank and double diaphragm pump, which was a very handy feature. About the Experts: Knudtson: I genuinely love boats of all shapes and sizes, and I love people. At Seattle Yachts I spend my days talking with people about boats and taking them on sea trials to help them find the perfect boat for their needs. Seattle Yachts is a team…a sort of family. We all like boats and what we do. I think boats make people smile and feel happy. Happy smiling people on boats makes for a productive and fun-filled work environment. Whiting: My favorite part of my job is working with people to help them achieve their dreams. We have a terrific team of dedicated individuals who really love what we do. Our philosophy is to take care of our people. If we do that, they will in turn take care of our customers. I think this becomes quite evident when working for or dealing with Seattle Yachts. >> For more information on Bullfrog Boats and on Seattle Yachts, visit: seattleyachts.com.

TI G HT L INE S CONTRIBUTED BY MARK YUASA, WDFW

Fishing Around MARK YUASA checks in with a mid-summer update on the region’s most promising summer salmon fisheries. The number of saltwater salmon fishing opportunities continues to ramp up heading into July, and, hopefully, the decent catches seen in open areas last month are a signal of what lies ahead for the remainder of summer: South-Central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11): Case in point: The hatchery-marked Chinook caught when south-central Puget Sound was open June 1-3 were some of the best seen in a long time, and so good that the first half of the Chinook quota was achieved in a matter of a few days. Area 11 reopens daily from July 1-September 30 with an allowable catch quota of 2,816 and a total sublegal encounter limit of 3,373 (Chinook under the 22-inch minimum size limit). The length of the summer Chinook fishery is dictated by the catch quota, so going sooner rather than later should guarantee you time on the water. San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7): There is also a small window of opportunity for summer hatchery-marked Chinook in the San Juan Islands, which is open July 14-16 only and additional days may be added based on in-season updates. The Islands’ Chinook quota is 1,800 (up from 1,382 in 2021 and 1,562 in 2020). Fishing is also planned to reopen August 16-September 30 for hatchery coho only. Northern Puget Sound (Marine Area 9): This fishery opens for hatchery-marked Chinook on July 14-16 and July 21-23 and then will be open daily from July 28-August 15 if enough of the 4,700-Chinook quota (4,700 in 2021 and 5,600 in 2020) is still available after the initial first two openers. It then reopens daily from August 16-September 25 for hatchery-marked coho only. Central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10): This resident coho only fishery remains open daily through July 13 with most fish averaging 2 to 4 pounds. It then shifts into a hatchery-marked Chinook and coho fishery from July 14-August 31. Chinook retention could close sooner if the 3,966 quota is achieved (3,718 in 2021 and 4,100 in 2020). Strait of Juan de Fuca at Sekiu (Marine Area 5): This much-beloved region opens July 1-August 15 for hatchery-marked Chinook and coho, and the small town nestled on Clallam Bay is known to produce some dandy kings—10 to 15 pounds with some exceeding 35 pounds. The Chinook retention fishery at Sekiu could close sooner if the 3,890-catch quota is achieved. 72

Eastern Strait at Port Angeles (Marine Area 6): Located west of a true north-south line through the No. 2 Buoy immediately east of Ediz Hook, this fishery opens July 1-August 15 for hatchery-marked Chinook and coho. The Chinook retention fishery could close sooner if the 6,050 quota (4,769 in 2021) is achieved. The area east of that north-south line is open July 1-Aug. 15 for hatchery-marked coho only. Hood Canal south of Ayock Point (Marine Area 12): This is another area that doesn’t get much attention, but has been rather productive in early July for hatchery Chinook. This stretch of Hood Canal is open July 1-September 30 for coho and hatchery-marked Chinook with a liberal daily limit of four salmon and a minimum size limit of 20 inches. And Much, Much More: Off the coast, head to La Push (Marine Area 3), Neah Bay (Marine Area 4) and Ilwaco (Marine Area 1), which are open daily for salmon retention. Westport (Marine Area 2) is open daily beginning July 2. All areas are scheduled to remain open through September 30 or until quotas are met, with species and size restrictions dependent on the area. Other salmon options in July are the Tulalip Terminal Fishery open Fridays to Mondays only for Chinook; and southern Puget Sound (Marine Area 13) as well as many docks and piers that are open year-round for salmon. Advice for Anglers: Migrating summer Chinook don’t tend to stick around in one spot for very long as they head to natal spawning grounds. The best action tends to occur during early mornings when they’re suspended in the upper and middle water column. As the sun rises, the king head to deeper waters and can be usually found near the bottom. Other important keys to success are locating baitfish schools at the proper depth and getting your presentation into the mix and looking at a tide chart to determine if you’ll have any luck at catching a fish. In the next issue of the magazine, I’ll dive even further into August salmon fishing options as the list of opportunities grows even larger. I’ll see you on the water very soon! Getting Steamy JAMES O. FRAIOLI catches the best of Northwest summer with Chef Bill Shaw’s slow-simmered, seafood-laden steam pot recipe. Summer in the Northwest means outdoor cookouts, beach barbecues, and feasts afloat. It’s also an excellent time to make the most of our local seafood—clams, mussels, Dungeness crab, spot prawns, diver scallops—all looking and tasting their best. So, after a sun-splashed day gathering the ocean’s bounty, celebrate the seafood harvest with this showstopper from the cookbook ROCHE: A Culinary Journey Through San Juan Island’s Illustrious Harbor, which I co-authored with Chef Bill Shaw. To me, it doesn’t get any better than fresh shellfish slowly simmered in white wine, butter, garlic, herbs, and smoky pork fat with crispy garlic bread for dipping into the beautiful broth. When assembling this recipe, make sure the clams and mussels are tight-lipped. If any are open, give them a quick shake. If they do not close, simply discard them. Also make sure to give the seafood a rinse under running water to remove any grit or sand before they go in the pan.

Northwest Steam Pot with Smoky Andouille Sausage Serves 6 4 ounces butter 2 tablespoons minced garlic 6 ounces Andouille sausage, sliced in half, then cut into ½-inch-thick half-moons 12 ounces manila clams, rinsed to remove any sand 12 ounces mussels, debearded and rinsed 4 ounces white wine 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh basil 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme ¼ cup finely chopped Italian flat-leaf parsley 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 Dungeness crab, broken into leg sections with body meat attached 8 ounces spot prawns, in shell, split in half Garlic bread, as needed Lemon slices, for garnish

In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add the butter, garlic, and sliced sausage. Using a wooden spoon, stir the sausage until most of fat is rendered, about 4 minutes. Add the clams and mussels, then stir until the shellfish is coated in butter and fat. Lower the heat to medium and add the white wine, basil, thyme, parsley, black pepper, and crab. Place a lid over the pan and allow to steam for 5 to 8 minutes or until the shellfish begin to open. Add the prawns and replace lid. Continue to steam until all clams and mussels are open. Turn off the heat, replace the lid, and allow to finish. Meanwhile, prepare some crusty garlic bread and place in the oven to brown. Slice in small pieces for dipping. Pour the finished steam pot ingredients into a large ceramic bowl or serve in the cooking vessel. Garnish with fresh lemon slices and serve immediately.

Greenland Ho! Rugged, mountainous, and beautiful Greenland offers the cruising adventure of a lifetime.

84

The world’s largest island, Greenland is a captivating yacht charter destination in the Arctic for any adventure-minded traveler. Just imagine cruising under the glow of the Northern Lights in the winter or the midnight sun in the summer, taking in a rugged, mountainous, and contrasting landscape that encircles the enormous Greenland ice sheet sitting at the heart of the isle. Greenland’s wildlife is just as rich as the topography and is extremely diverse: sea eagles, seals, whales, musk oxen, wolves, reindeer, and polar bears all call the island home. Whales can also be spotted swimming near land, particularly during the summer months and most commonly spied are fin, humpback, and minke whales. Cruise through breathtaking Greenland fjords, get right up close to massive glaciers, go ashore and meet the Inuit natives, bathe in geothermal springs, visit the national parks, and bask in nature’s artwork as you gaze at the seemingly different designs carved into the icebergs—these are just a few examples of how your luxury yacht charter vacation in Greenland can become the adventure of a lifetime. My recommended route through this rugged beauty follows below. KANGERLUSSUAQ Located at the eastern end of a deep fjord, the settlement of Kangerlussuaq was founded in 1941 when it was opened as an U.S. Air Force base during World War II. Americans remained there until 1992, and today, the Kangerlussuaq Museum explores the town’s history as a base and beyond. Located in an area that is abundant with local wildlife, it is also Greenland’s only direct access point to its signature ice cap, a definite calling card for travelers who wish to see a true wonder of the world. ASTERIA: AN EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK Explore more aboard ASTERIA, the 160-foot Anastassiades & Tsortandies 1970/2019 stunner featured here in this month’s column. Brand-new to the charter lineup at Worth Avenue Yachts, this Custom Explorer Yacht can take you there; contact Lori and the team at Worth for more details.

AASIAAT Aasiaat

AASIAAT Aasiaat welcomes you first with the charming sight of its colorful wooden houses. Located at the mouth of Disko Bay, Aasiaat is the ideal spot for kayaking, as come summer fin, humpback, and minke whales, in addition to bowhead, blue and sperm whales, all frequent these waters. It’s also the land of the midnight sun here, as the sun does not set from the end of May to the end of July. QEQERTARSUAQ & DISKO ISLAND Qeqertarsuaq town on Disko Island has a long and proud whaling tradition, and in keeping with that, a multitude of whales can be seen here in the summer. The Lyngmark glacier is the only place in Greenland for summer dog sledding. The experience is best in the seemingly never-ending light of summer evening hours, and the couple of hours it takes to hike to the top of the glacier is well worth the effort! ILULISSAT & JAKOBSHAVN ICE FJORD The fishing village of Ilulissat is perched at the edge of a 25-mile-long ice fjord that produces 20 million tons of ice per day. Naturally then, Ilulissat’s claim to fame is ice. With 37 miles of icebergs, the Jakobshavn ice fjord—a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004—is considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Greenland. EQIP SERMIA Eqip Sermia, also known as the Eqi glacier, rewards adventurers with breathtaking views of one of the most photographed places in Greenland. The Eqi glacier is one of the most active glaciers in Greenland, and the odds of seeing ice fall from the enormous glacier are quite good. Though not as large as some other glaciers in the ice fjord, the Eqi glacier is more accessible that most, providing up-close views. UUMMANNAQ & QILAQITSOQ Have your camera ready and be out on deck as the ship approaches Uummannaq (which means “heart- like”), so named for the heart-shaped mountain that towers over the town. Here at your final stop, marvel at the traditional colorful houses perched atop the rugged terrain as you wander through town and reflect on an adventure like no other.
