ack in the September 2023 edition of OCIO magazine, we talked a little about the gear systems on e-bikes. Since that editorial was published, we have been regularly asked to explain in more detail about e-bikes and especially about the gears. If you’re a newbie to cycling, and especially to e-bike cycling, it’s important to learn how to shift gears correctly. Incorrect shifting can not only damage the gear system, severely reducing its life span, but it will greatly reduce the enjoyment factor of e-bike cycling Here’s our quick guide to help you master the basics. Not all e-bikes are the same and not all gear systems on e-bikes are the same. Before you begin riding your e-bike, do make sure you fully understand the gear system on your e-bike and how the gear change system works. Having familiarised yourself with the gear system you are ready the most important of all the rules. Rule No. 1 about shifting gears on an e-bike is never shift gears when you are standing still. You should always be pedalling the bike when you shift. There are exceptions to this rule but they only apply if you have Rohloff or automatic gears. Shifting when you aren’t pedalling can damage the gears, often causing the bike chain to dislodge and come off in a 46 OCIO magazine

Understanding Gear Systems derailleur system. Shifting before you stop also makes it easier to start up again later. You should be pedalling normally or with only pedal assist engaged before shifting gears. Having said you must be pedalling to change gears, a degree of caution must still be applied. For example, while pedalling when shifting gears, you shouldn’t be going at maximum speeds. Pedalling at maximum speeds and changing gears may cause the chainring to come off with a derailleur model. Further good advice about changing gears is to only shift one gear at a time to avoid potential damage to the e-bike gear system. Aggressive gear changes can cause the chain to skip or derail. It’s also good to know your bike’s gearing capacity to avoid trying to shift into gears that do not exist on the model of e-bike you have. Perhaps an obvious tip but important for it

to be mentioned here anyway, is to always make sure you are using the right gear for the terrain you are on. Lower, easier gears are better for inclines, which means you need to prepare yourself and the e-bike when you are approaching a hill. Switching to a lower gear will allow you more pedal revs to tackle the incline. Middle gears are great for everyday cruising and terrains with slight ups and downs. Higher gears are ideal for accelerating, descending inclines, and riding on flat surfaces. So, there it is, our quick guide to e-bike gear systems. his is the Bentley Flying Spur V8-S, the most driver focused interpretation of the maker’s extralarge luxury saloon. It might not have the on-paper punch of the soon to be defunct W12-powered Speed model, but in its place comes a more nuanced and interactive driving experience. The current Flying Spur is a very different car to flagship Bentley saloons that came before. Previously, models like the Arnage and Mulsanne were hand-built on bespoke platforms. They found their engineering basis not in a modern notion of motoring, but one that stretched back to a time when chauffeurs were still on the options list. Perhaps inevitable in the current climate of spreading development costs, the new Flying Spur is much more of a cog in the Volkswagen Group machine, so finds its basis in a platform co-developed with Porsche. Not that you can tell, as the Panamera on which this car shares its underpinnings bears no resemblance to it at all. In fact, the Flying Spur’s hyper-exaggerated form is perhaps its most defining feature, with a traditional three-box silhouette stretched over a vast 5.3m-long frame. Yet while a long bonnet and tail might be traditional Bentley, the shallow windows and extreme angles to 48 OCIO magazine

Bentley Flying Spur both the front and rear screens are a much more recent phenomenon. Overlaid on this canvas is plenty of opulent detailing. The Flying Spur’s extensive brightwork is darkened, including the strip of trim that runs up the bonnet towards the illuminated ‘Flying B’ that sits at the crest of the upright grille. This opulence continues inside too. The steering wheel and its controls are from Audi, and the centre console is not a million miles away from the layout you’ll find in the aforementioned Panamera. But so well disguised are they, we’d doubt many potential owners would likely know, or care. They’d be more interested, as we were, in the stunning quality of the open-pore walnut dash and exceptional leather, that together personify a totally distinct experience that only British car manufacturers seem able to create. The driving experience is exceptional for such a massive car. This isn’t an agile car though, and the V8 S never feels anything other than absolutely huge. And as an object to desire, Bentley has the Flying Spur

perfectly positioned in the marketplace. The traditional saloon shape might feel like it’s in its twilight age, but this car is proof that when executed well, an epic luxury fourdoor still has every right to rule the road in a sea of faceless SUVs. n

Quizás inevitable en el actual contexto de distribución de los costes de desarrollo, el nuevo Flying Spur es más bien un engranaje de la maquinaria del Grupo Volkswagen, que se basa en una plataforma desarrollada conjuntamente con Porsche. Aunque no se nota, ya que el Panamera en el que se basa este coche no se parece en nada. De hecho, la forma hiperexagerada del Flying Spur es quizá su rasgo más definitorio, con una silueta tradicional de tres cajas estirada sobre un vasto bastidor de 5,3 m de longitud.
