i usted es un poco como yo, y más bien no está soñando con unas “Navidades nevadas”, entonces quizás proporcione a los mercados festivos del norte de Europa un perdida este año, ahórrese un paquete en tarifas aéreas, y a cambio piense para las celebraciones de Navidad en la ciudad de Málaga. Málaga se establece rápidamente como un centro de escenario de reunión para las Navidades y las celebraciones de Año Nuevo. Bueno, tendrá que sustituir una jarra de ponche caliente y una salchicha de bratwurst por una copa de rioja y una lasca de jamón, y quizá cambie su térmico por una camiseta, ¿Pero eso no parece un precio alto a pagar ahora, verdad? Si usted quiere disfrutar de la Navidad (antes y después) tradicionalmente, sin los relojes de cuco y los calendarios de chocolate, podría comenzar su búsqueda en Calle Larios, donde las calles están pavimentadas realmente en...mármol. Es la calle más larga de compras de la ciudad, y durante Diciembre tiene siete días gloriosos de una semana para disfrutar del aire festivo y un poco de las compras, eche un vistazo a los artistas de la calle y entonces quizá realice algunas compras más. f you’re anything like me, and you’d rather not be dreaming of a ‘White Christmas’, then perhaps give the festive markets of northern Europe a miss this year, save yourself a packet on airfares, and head for the Christmas celebrations in Malaga city instead. Malaga is fast establishing itself as a centre stage venue for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Ok, so you may have to substitute a tankard of mulled wine and a bratwurst sausage for tumbler of rioja and slice of jamon, and maybe ditch your thermals for a t-shirt, but that doesn’t seem a high price to pay now, does it? If you want to enjoy Christmas (pre and post) traditionally, without the cuckoo clocks and chocolate advent calendars, you could start your quest on Calle Larios, where the streets really are paved in...marble. It’s the longest shopping street in the city, and during December you have seven glorious days a week to enjoy festive fayre and a bit of shopping, have a look at the street entertainers and then maybe do a bit more shopping. When it gets dark, you can stare up at the 2 million yellow, blue and white lights on display, and when your neck aches, do a little bit more shopping perhaps? Working your way up Larios to the Plaza de la constitucion, gaze in awe at the gargantuan Christmas tree. Its quite a spectacle. Stop for a drink, and I suggest ﬁll your mouths with as many Turron and Mantecados sweets as is humanly possible. (You u OCIO axarquía

Una vez que se ha recuperado de su agonía de azúcar, ¿Por qué no compra algunos más para el viaje? Entonces prepárese para la acción, y prepárese para aventuras más mediterráneas de navidad. Dirigiéndose al norte desde la Plaza de la Constitución, a través del área hermosamente decorada del Teatro Cervantes, dé una vuelta alrededor de la Plaza de la Merced. Durante Diciembre, sirve de anﬁtriona a un tipo de mercado medieval de Navidad extravagante. Lo tradicional se mezcla con lo moderno y una buena mezcla de español con árabe. Es realmente una experiencia extraordinaria. Dígame, ¿exactamente cuáles de los mercados europeos del norte puede jactarse de un puesto que venda pulpo a la plancha y a un experto en caligrafía árabe entre puestos de alimentos y artesanía en mitad del invierno? Relájese sentado entre las plantas botánicas, zapatee mientras escucha alguna música de un puesto, o ve algún baile tradicional, entonces una vez refrescado, respire hondo y registre los puestos buscando regalos ingeniosos y económicos de Navidad. Visite Málaga el 24 de diciembre y quédese para la misa de medianoche en la Catedral. Las campanas que llaman el día de Navidad y el pesebre que se muestra solo, son suﬁciente para llevarle de vuelta a su niñez, hablando de lo cual...... Si a principios de Enero siente que sus bolsillos se han quedado vacios y su barriga ligeramente más grande de lo que recuerda, dé un vigoroso paseo por al Puerto de Málaga. El 5 de Enero alrededor de las 5 de la tarde, vea a los Tres Reyes, Gaspar, Melchor y Baltasar que llegan en barco para comenzar la cabalgata de los

niños. Miles de Malagueños felices dan la bienvenida a los tres Reyes Magos y la gran procesión de carrozas de niños, mientras desﬁlan alrededor del centro de las ciudades. Si usted todavía es un chico con ganas de morder algo azucarado puede ser un buen momento para mencionar que aproximadamente 1,5 millones de caramelos se tiran a la multitud durante la procesión. Así que traiga un cubo para reunir algunos, y un cepillo de dientes para enjuagar la evidencia después. Después de una saludable ingesta de aditivos del tipo E, atájelo con algún pescado fresco y una copa de Cava, y déjese atrapar por algunas hermosas estrellas y una brisa marina tibia en la playa de la Malagueta, para dar la bienvenida al Año Nuevo. Then gird your loins, and prepare for more Mediterranean yuletide adventures. Heading north from the Plaza de la Constitucion, via the beautifully decorated Theatre Cervantes area, have a spin around the Plaza Merced. During December, it plays host to a kind of Christmas medieval market extravaganza. Traditional mixes with modern, and Spanish goods mix with Arabic. It’s really quite an extraordinary experience. Tell me this, exactly which of the northern European markets can boast a stall selling grilled octopus and an Arabic calligraphy expert amidst food and craft stalls in the middle of winter? If you’re not flagging yet, head in an easterly direction and disappear amongst the labyrinth of beautifully bedecked streets in the historical quarter. Where poinsettias mingle with twinkly Christmas lights and countless chic boutiques beckon your acquaintance. If the festive spirit hasn’t hit you yet, well, what could be more traditional than Ice skating. That’s right...ice skating! The full monty, real ice and music to skate to as well! (Having filled your lungs with plenty of oxygen, and with all that walking you may well be feeling a little light headed now)....How about a drink and a snack from one of the many covered stalls along either side of the Paseo del Parque?. Have a quiet sit down amongst the botanical plants, tap your feet whilst you listen to some music from the bandstand, or watch some traditional dancing, then once refreshed, take a deep breath and scour the stalls for ingenious and inexpensive Christmas gifts. Visit Malaga on the 24th of December and stick around for midnight mass at the Cathedral. The bells ringing in Christmas day and the crib display alone, are enough to take you back to your childhood, talking of which.... If early January leaves your pockets feeling empty and your tummy slightly larger than you remember, take a brisk walk down to the Port of Malaga. On the 5th of January at around 5.00pm, see the Three Kings, Casper, Melchior and Balthazar arrive on a boat to start the children’s parade. Join thousands of happy Malagueños to welcome three Kings and the large procession of children’s floats, as they parade around the cities central area. If you’re still a teeny bit peckish for something sugary it may be a good time to mention that approximately 1.5 million sweets are thrown into the crowds during the procession. So bring a bucket to collect some, and a toothbrush to wipe away the evidence afterwards. After a healthy entrée of E numbers, head off for some fresh fish and a glass of Cava, and catch some beautiful stars and a warm sea breeze on Malagueta beach, to welcome the New Year in. See, I told you Christmas in Malaga city was better than gluwein and lederhosen in sub zero temperatures, didn’t I? n OCIO axarquía

is amigos y yo salimos a cenar la semana pasada y por supuesto salió la conversación sobre el asunto de la propiedad, y no pocos de nosotros, porque nuestros amigos tienen unos amigos de Gran Bretaña que quieren comprar una propiedad en la costa. Durante toda la cena nos contaron la historia de la visita desde Gran Bretaña para comprar una propiedad “barata”. La historia comenzó hace unas 6 semanas cuando estas personas de Gran Bretaña leyeron sobre la caída del mercado inmobiliario español y pensaron que podrían visitar España y conseguir una verdadera ganga ya que los medios británicos sugerían que ¡las casas se estaban regalando! Aparentemente ellos contactaron con una agencia inmobiliaria que conocían desde hacía años en Inglaterra. Los llamaron y les explicaron que querían echar

Throughout dinner the story of the UK visit to buy a ‘cheap property’ was told. The story started about 6 weeks previously with the UK people having read about the Spanish ‘doom and gloom’ thought they would visit Spain and pick up a ‘real bargain’ because, as the UK media were suggesting, houses are being given away! Apparently they made contact with an estate agent they were familiar with from many years ago in England. They rang him up and explained that they wanted to take a look at some properties but they wanted a bargain. They wanted a house with a big terrace or garden but most OCIO axarquía

El agente balbuceó un poco, pero estuvo encantado de elegir tres propiedades para ellos y verlas. La primera propiedad que miraron era una casa de 4 dormitorios en una urbanización al lado del mar. Tenía una terraza enorme, garaje doble, un sótano para reformar y sensacionales vistas desde las plantas altas. Estaba en el mercado por 365.000 euros. A ellos les gusto...¡mucho! Sin embargo, no tenía cocina, ya que era nueva y tendrían que gastar más dinero organizando el sótano para meter su mesa de billar allí. Teniendo en cuenta la mentalidad “es un mercado de compradores” ofrecieron una oferta loca de 300.000 euros. El dueño se rió y rechazó la oferta al momento...¡y con razón! Después de todo una casa grande en la playa no surge tan a menudo. Pero no querían pagar el precio pedido, así que se fueron. Después vieron una villa privada por unos 400.000 euros. Tenía su propia piscina, pero uno de los dormitorios tenía un aseo dentro (y no quiero decir en-suite) así que eso los echó atrás. No hubo oferta para ésa. Al día siguiente vieron 12 OCIO axarquía

The ﬁrst property they looked at was a large 4 bedroom townhouse on a development by the beach. It had a huge terrace, double garage, a basement ready for conversion and stunning views from the top ﬂoors. It was on the market for 365,000 euros. They liked it....a lot! However, it had no kitchen as it was brand new and they would have to spend some money sorting out the basement to get their snooker table in there! Considering the mentality of “it’s a buyers market” they put in a “crazy” offer of 300,000 euros. The owner had a good laugh and rejected the offer out right.... and rightly so! This is after all a big townhouse on the beach, they don’t exactly come up that often. But they didn’t want to pay the asking price so they moved on. Then they saw a private villa on for just over 400,000 euros. It had it’s own pool but one of the bedrooms had a toilet in it (and I don’t mean en-suite) so that kind of put them off. No offer for that one then. Next they saw a large 3 bedroom end townhouse which the owner had totally refurbished. It had it’s own private pool and a large garden around the house. Inside everything

Si usted está vendiendo debe decidir su tarjeta de audiencia y quién piensa que realmente va a comprar su casa. Si es un comprador y está buscando una ganga, entones quizá no la entre tan fácilmente como la prensa de aquí y de todo el mundo dicen que es. Therein lies the problem. Lifestyle buyers will pay the going rate for the right property whilst investment and resident buyers like to take their time and not be rushed or pressurised into anything. If you are selling you must decide on your target audience and decide who you think is really going to buy your property. If you are a buyer and you are out to bag yourself a bargain then you may not ﬁnd it as easy as the press both here and around the world make it out to be. It is a buyers market for sure but perhaps only in terms of choice, not necessarily price. n

ue to the complexity regarding relative relationships and problems that can originate after a death in the family and, bearing in mind that it is a difficult time, we should act with coherence, minimising the possibility of other problems between members of the family that can arise during this time. Additional costs and delay in the whole procedure of the distribution of the estates of the deceased should be reduced wherever possible. Before these delicate family situations arise, the drafting of a will is stated as the right instrument for the testator to leave his/her wish in a correct way. Making a will is recommended for all foreign individuals that own or are titleholders of an asset in Spain. The reason for drafting a will in Spain, even if only for your assets situated in Spain because you have already made a will in your main country of residence, is basically as follows: A) You can save legal and tax fees. We consider that making a will before a Notary Public, is the safest and most effective way to do it in Spain. The cost is very low, almost negligible, if compared with the legal costs that the procedure of grant of probate could involve. Should a person die without making a will, then his/her heirs should initiate a procedure called “Ab intestate succession”, which the attendance of every legal heir, spouse and children, parents, brothers and sisters and even a Power of Attorney can be necessary. If all heirs agree with the will, then the procedure can be simplified, even though the costs of it are high. On the other hand, if there is no agreement between the legal heirs then the procedure could be more complicated as the grant of probate inheritance could go before the corresponding court. A conflict could be prolonged indefinitely and may entail legal costs for the whole procedure, which are usually expensive. Spanish Authorities can also recognise the will that you made in your home country but the procedure for validating it can be complicated and expensive. Hence you are advised to draft a will in Spain. B) Applicable Law: A person who lives in Spain and wishes to make a will according to the hereditary laws of his/ her home country, could include these stipulations in a Spanish will, but only for assets in Spain. The importance of making a will in Spain. the Spanish Authorities do not ask if the deceased is resident or non resident in Spain, the most important thing for them is the payment of the corresponding taxes by the heirs. So, a problem may arise if the deceased has not drafted a will in Spain, as the applicable law should be determined. Also, if there is no will in the deceased’s home country, in most cases, the Spanish Law will be applied enforcing a pre-established share-out system. If you have any asset, business, or economic activity in Spain, it would be very advisable for you to make a will in Spain. For such purpose, it would be helpful for you to entrust this matter to a lawyer so he/she can advise you on all aspects and of course, they will inform you about the tax costs of the inheritance procedure. Inheritance tax in Spain is applied on all assets in Spain. In order for the heirs to receive and enjoy such assets, they must pay this tax. There are many ways to help your heirs to minimise the tax costs, and it is worth studying all possibilities so you can choose the best option for your individual circumstances. Whether you are a fiscal or non fiscal resident, some deductions can be applied on this tax. In short, regardless of whether you may have drawn up a will in your home country, we would recommend you make a will to protect your assets in Spain but, do consult a lawyer first. He/she will be able to answer all of your questions and, of course, will be able to minimise the tax costs to your heirs by careful tax planning according to your personal circumstances. n

La importancia de otorgar testamento en España Words by: C&D Solicitors

ada la complejidad de las relaciones familiares y los problemas que pueden originarse entre los distintos miembros de una familia con ocasión de la muerte de uno de sus miembros, hecho que siempre es duro de afrontar, lo mas coherente es minimizar la posibilidad de que puedan surgir distintos problemas entre los miembros familiares y evitar que sean los propios familiares los que decidan sobre el destino de los bines del difunto, así como evitar gastos adicionales y demora en el tiempo en todo el proceso de adjudicación de los bienes del difunto. Ante estas situaciones familiares de especial delicadeza, el otorgamiento de un testamento se manifieste como el instrumento adecuado en el que de manera inequívoca la voluntad del testador queda reflejada, siendo su otorgamiento más que recomendable para todas las personas extranjeras que son propietarias o titulares de cualquier bien en España. El otorgar testamento en España, solo y exclusivamente para sus bienes situados en España en el supuesto de que hayan otorgado testamento en su país de origen, atiende a unas razones básicas: A) Ahorro fiscal y costes legales: Podemos razonar que el coste del testamento otorgado ante notario, manera más segura y eficaz de otorgar testamento en España, es muy pequeño, casi irrisorio, si comparamos los costes legales que conllevaría el proceso de adjudicación de herencia sin que la persona fallecida haya otorgado testamento en España. Si una persona fallece sin testamento en España, sus herederos deberían de iniciar un procedimiento denominado sucesión abintestato, para el cual será necesario la presencia o apoderamiento de todos los herederos legales, cónyuge e hijos, o padres y hermanos en ausencia de estos. Si todos los herederos se ponen de acuerdo, el procedimiento se simplifica algo, aunque los costes del mismo son elevados; pero si no hay acuerdo entre los herederos legales, el proceso se complicaría mucho más, ya que la adjudicación de herencia podría acabar en el Juzgado, conflicto que se podría eternizar y con unos costes legales de los distintos profesionales que deben de intervenir (abogados y procuradores, entre otros) bastante elevados. Las autoridades españolas pueden reconocer el testamento que usted haya otorgado en su país de origen, pero el procedimiento para validar el mismo es mucho mas complejo y caro

que el hecho de otorgar un testamento en España. B) Ley aplicable: Si usted es extranjero, en su testamento podrá reflejar las estipulaciones según las leyes de su país de origen y cuando fallezca se adjudicará su herencia de acuerdo con estas y las estipulaciones contendidas en su testamento. Por tanto, el problema surgiría si no hay testamento otorgado en España por el fallecido, ya que habría que estar al supuesto concreto para determinar la Ley aplicable, aunque les adelanto que si no se ha otorgado testamento en su país de origen, en la mayoría de los casos será aplicable la ley española, la cual tiene establecido un sistema de reparto general pre-establecido aplicable a todos los casos de herencia sin testamento. Si usted tiene algún bien en España u empresa o negocio, es mas que aconsejable que otorgue, al menos, un testamento para sus bienes en España ante notario, siendo muy recomendable que para redactar el mismo encargue los servicios profesionales de un abogado que le asesore ante las dudas que puedan surgirle y que le informe de los costes fiscales del proceso hereditario. Tenga en cuenta que en España se aplica el Impuesto de Donaciones y Sucesiones que grava los bienes que el difunto tenga en España y que deberán de abonar sus herederos para poder adjudicarse y disfrutar de los mismos. Existen determinadas posibilidades que pueden ayudarle a minimizar los costes fiscales de sus herederos y que merece la pena que sean estudiadas para saber cual puede compensarle mejor dentro de sus circunstancias personales. Así mismo, el hecho de ser o no residente fiscal posibilita la aplicación de algunas deducciones por dicho impuesto. Resumiendo, si tiene algún bien en España o tiene algún negocio u actividad económica, independientemente de que haya otorgado testamento en su país de origen, otorgue testamento ante notario para sus bienes en España y busque asesoramiento en un abogado ya que podrá resolverle las dudas que pueda tener y optimizará el ahorro fiscal para sus herederos, mediante una buena planificación fiscal acorde con sus circunstancias personales. n

Esta es sin duda una época difícil para que los fanáticos de la moda se vean llamativos. Saddle Up The spanish saddle has long been considered to be the ﬁnest in the world, but where did it all begin?

he first horseback riders rode bareback, in fact for hundreds of years they travelled, hunted for food and even waged war with their enemies, all while riding without a saddle. In 365 AD, a tribe called the Sarmations are thought to have invented not only the first saddle, but also the first metal stirrups and spurs. The Sarmations were known as serious horsemen, using their horses in battle and sacrificing them to their gods. The Huns invading from Central Asia brought the Sarmation’s saddles and metal stirrups to Europe, the Europeans finding the metal stirrups great for mounting, as well as aiding the riders balance. Riders now could use the weapons of war of the time, swords, axes and lances, with more skill and efficiency. The next major improvements in saddles would wait for the medieval knights. The saddle we now know as the western saddle is actually an evolved version of the Spanish Vaquero’s (Cowboy) saddle used by the working cowboys in Mexico. Things from the areas of New Mexico, Mexico-New Spain, and Texas in the early 19th century were often referred to as Spanish, including the Spanish saddle. Historians are aware that America’s story owes something of significance to the “western horse saddle,” ergo the metaphor - what the motorcar was to the American 20th century working employee, the saddle was to the early American travellers and cowboys. What was under the hood, be it horses or horsepower did not change much. Rather, it was the drivers’ seat and all its appearances that we have obsessed about. Henry 50 OCIO axarquía

Ford invented the first motorcar and the Spanish Vaquero invented the first western cowboy horse saddle. By the outset of the nineteenth century the saddle used by the horsemen of New Mexico was founded upon a saddletree incorporating practically all the elements of design by which the western saddle tree is distinguished today. By the time Spain had set sail for the West Indies in 1492, two basic styles had been adopted and brought to the Americas with the horse, namely la estradiota and la jineta. The first saddle models had no saddle horn. The saddle horn was an innovation invented through necessity by creative Spanish and Mexican vaqueros. Livestock was first tied to the horse’s tail. The horses surely having objected to towing anything larger than a sheep, vaqueros then tied the home end of their lariat to the “D” ring on the side rigging of the saddle. That proved less than efficient, so some ingenious vaquero invented a large wooden bulbous saddle horn cut from the same piece of saddle tree; also called a manzana (apple). The second Viceroy of New Spain claimed some credit for “la silla vaquero” the new vaquero saddle with a saddle horn for roping. It is my guess, however, that it was a “creative hands on” practical minded lesser known working vaquero who through trial and error invented the prototype of what eventually became the saddle horn. The early Spanish saddle was used, with only minor modifications, for no less than 200 years. Today, the modern spanish saddle is still considered to be the best in the world by all concerned, whether you are a part time enthusiast or modern day cowboy. n

El segundo Virrey de Nueva España reclamó algún crédito para “la silla vaquero” la nueva silla de vaquero con un cuerno en la montura para atar. Es mi conjetura, sin embargo, que fue la “mano creadora” del trabajo de la mentalidad práctica menos conocida del vaquero la que a través del ensayo y error, inventó el prototipo de lo que llegó a ser finalmente el cuerno de la silla. go with them unless you absolutely insist the outfit must be an all-in-one or of uniform colour, there is little to beat smart, quilted or two-ply trousers made from those quick drying, breathable materials beloved of walkers and campers in countries of cooler climes. They also come in bib or salopette style and adapt well to pursuits on horseback, archery, shooting, sailing and even hanggliding. If your middle is likely to be threatened by a clothes gap it’s no problem to fix with a basic all-in-one outfit that weighs little and packs easily so you can then set about enjoying yourself. If the choice of colours and styles is now huge – the add-ons or accessories, both decorative and practical, are almost beyond counting. It’s really important (as well as smart-looking) to make sure the neck and wrists – as well as the top of the head - are warm and covered when temperatures drop. For serious skiing you may also need to consider a mobile “Sat-Nav”. Electronic mapping has come a long way in the last few years and is a great tool to have with you if you are going off piste. The list of good clothing and useful kit to accompany it could almost go on forever so it’s best to see it on display for yourself, and talk to the experts who use it and know what they’re talking about. The winter sport season is now upon us and for some it is a very exciting time of the year. But remember, winter pursuits come with a degree of danger as a part of the package. Alberdini After being closed for over 5 years, the Alberdini in Competa has been given a new lease of life, thanks to husband and wife team Inez and Rob Leniere. Having sold their sports complex business in Holland they have turned their attention to reviving the Alberdini. With a Christmas opening planned, they have much work to do. We caught up with them on a wet October morning to talk about their plans and see how the project is coming along.

Q. I see a lot of craftsmen around us, hard at work, is there much work to do on the project before it is ready to open? A. Well yes and no. We are putting in a tarmac road from the entrance to the main building and adding more car parking spaces but aside from that the work on the buildings is mainly cosmetic, as the structures were generally in good order. Q. The first thing I noticed as I arrived was the unusual style of the Alberdini. How would you explain this design to someone who has not been to the Alberdini before? A. The style has a definite Gaudi influence, which can be seen in the fabulous mosaics and tiles, as well as in the use of strong colours and unique shapes. Although we hope to add our own personal twist to this already exciting design. Q. There really is a lot of work going on around us as we speak, when are you planning to open? A. We will be open for business from the 20th December in time to celebrate Christmas in style with all of our clients. Q. Tell us a little bit about what will be on offer once you open. A. We plan to open 7 days a week offering a bar, restaurant and relaxing lounge areas as well as 7 hotel rooms and 4 individual bungalows. We want to be different in every way. Our mission is to create a personal experience for everyone that visits us, whether it be for a coffee or glass of wine, a light lunch or tapas, an evening meal or an overnight stay in one of our delightful bedrooms. We want everyone to feel comfortable and at home, no matter what they are there for. Q. And what about Christmas, what plans do you have in place? A. We have a very exciting and extensive programme of activities 58 OCIO axarquía

planned for Christmas and New Year. From the 20th to 24th the bar and restaurant will be open for normal trading, although on the 24th we will close at 4 pm in order to prepare for the 25th. On the evening of the 25th we have organised a big Christmas Night Party with live music so that everybody can come along and enjoy some festive fun at the Alberdini. On the 26th December we are offering High Tea, although reservations are required. From the 27th to the 30th we will be opening the restaurant and bar as normal. New Year’s Eve will be a special night which we will be celebrating with a fantastic party (tickets only; discount for pre-paid tickets) and the opening of the hotel rooms, which can also be pre-booked. Brunch will be served on January 1st although reservations are required before the 31st December. From the 2nd onwards all areas of the Alberdini will be ofﬁcially up and running. Q. odría decirse que la comida de Navidad es la celebración más importante del año. La presión se presenta en cocinar para la familia y llevar una comida tradicional impecable. Es una de las comidas más complicadas y que más tiempo lleva en su elaboración y preparación. Los restaurantes están inevitablemente completos de reservas y a menudo son muy caros, y al ﬁnal ,la mayoría de nosotros lo único que queremos es quedarnos en casa con grandes cantidades de alcohol, la mejor TV del año y los amigos y familia con los que hayamos elegido estar (o no, según el caso). En Gran Bretaña sabemos dónde conseguir el mejor pavo, o la salsa de arándanos apropiada. Todos los supermercados tienen lo que necesitamos desde ﬁnal de septiembre. Todas las cocinas tienen un horno, y en cada horno se puede poner un pavo bastante grande. En Gran Bretaña está Marks and Spencer. Aquí en España, todo es un poco diferente. Hay algunas tiendas inglesas, pero no en todas se puede conseguir chirivía o coles de Bruselas. Puede llevar mucho tiempo encontrarlo todo. Esta es nuestra 5a Navidad aquí en España y mi búsqueda de productos aún me hace ir desde Almuñecar hasta Málaga y, a menudo, tener que volver. La idea de nuestras cajas de comida de Navidad surgió del sentimiento hacia clientes que pasan apuros para encontrar los ingredientes, especialmente si están España solo para una semana o que de todos modos quieren librarse de ello. El restaurante se llena rápido el día de Navidad, pero este año podemos proporcionarles una fabulosa comida de Navidad para llevar, lo que les permitirá disfrutar de la comida de El Mirador, en el confort de su hogar. La caja contendrá una comida para 5 personas, pre-cocinada y lista para meter en su horno. Cada detalle de la comida ha sido pensado y previsto, incluyendo una botella de Cava. hristmas lunch is arguably the most important feast of the year. The pressure is on for the cook of the family to deliver a faultless, traditional meal. Yet it is one of the most time consuming and complicated meals to prepare and cook. Restaurants are inevitably fully booked and often very expensive, and in the end most of us just want to stay at home with copious amounts of alcohol, the best of the year’s TV and the friends and family that we have chosen to be with, (or not, as the case may be). In the UK we know where to get the best turkey, or the right cranberry sauce. Every supermarket stocks everything we need from the end of September. Every kitchen has an oven. And every oven can accommodate rather large turkeys. In the UK there is Marks and Spencer. Here in Spain though it’s all a bit different. There are a few English shops, but not all can supply you with parsnips or brussel sprouts. It can be incredibly time consuming to ﬁnd everything. This is our 5th Christmas here in Spain and my search for products still takes me from Almuñecar to Málaga, and often back again. The idea for our Christmas lunch boxes came from commiserating with clients who struggle to ﬁnd the ingredients, especially if they are only in Spain for a week or so to escape it all anyway. Although the Mirador at Cerro Gordo closes on the 9th November for our annual holiday, we reopen on the 20th December. We are open for lunch and dinner throughout the festive period. The restaurant is

filling fast for Christmas Day but this year we can once again provide you with a fabulous Christmas lunch takeaway box, which will allow you to enjoy the food from The Mirador, but in the comfort of your own home. The box will contain a five course Christmas lunch that has been pre-prepared and is ready to slip straight into your oven. Every aspect of the lunch has been thought about and provided, including a bottle of Cava. We also provide full step by step instructions to guide you from the crackers, cava and canapés to the home-made truffles. And just in case, there is even a direct help line if it all goes a bit pear shaped. The boxes cost just 25 euros per person but we only have a limited supply, so please place your orders early. a cosa más sorprendente de Torre del Mar es cómo un pueblo costero de este tamaño ha pasado inadvertido durante tanto tiempo, excepto para los españoles. Esto se hace incluso más misterioso después de descubrirlo y darse cuenta de que el centro turístico español perfecto es difícil de encontrar. This becomes even more of a mystery after you do discover it and realise that a more perfect Spanish holiday resort will be hard to ﬁnd. What the Spanish have known and kept to themselves for years is that Torre del Mar is the perfect combination of a working seaside town and a relaxing beach resort, neither aspect seeming to affect the other. The resort is very much tailored to the Spanish, both residents and holidaymakers, which makes it a perfect place to visit and live if you like the spanish way of life. beach which seems to go on forever. Well at least as far as the neighbouring resort of Caleta de Velez 4 kms away. Contrary to many other places on the coast, Torre del Mar has a seaside walk of several kilometers along the beach, far from the main road and the road traffic. This walk integrates gardens, sports grounds, restaurants and much more and it gets longer every year, through the new urbanisation and development projects. For two centuries though, this area of the Costa del Sol was known for its tropical fruit cultures more than it’s modern developments. In the middle of the town near the famous Casa Larios, you will find factory chimneys which are the remains of a past industry based around sugar cane. In 1796, the very first spanish sugar cane factory was opened here in Torre del Mar. In 1852, the family Larios revived that industry with vast new investments. In 1949 production was reaching 4 million kilos of sugar per year. Unfortunately times moved on and the factory ceased production in 1991. La creación de El Museo del Azúcar es uno de los proyectos de desarrollo que esta siendo considerado por las autoridades de la ciudad. En justificación a su nombre y a menudo simbolizándolo, Torre del Mar cuenta con uno de los únicos 6 faros de la Costa del Sol. El faro, totalmente automático no está asociado a ningún puerto pero, sin embargo, aún tiene un trabajo, guiar el tráfico marítimo. Siguiendo una larga historia que empezó en 1864 e incluye varios traslados, el faro como podemos verlo hoy tomó vida en 1976. Antes de entonces se usaba la pequeña torre de 11 metros de altura. The town itself has a great selection of shops and boutiques and there is also the popular weekly street market every Thursday. Not surprisingly for a town of this size there is a fabulous selection of places to eat and drink, mainly centred around the pedestrianised Paseo Larios and spreading out along the adjacent side streets and Paseo Maritimo. Once you have a total budget in mind, you really have to decide what your budget priorities are going to be. If food is the main focus of the party, then don’t go overboard on costly extras like a full open bar or a custom “balloon designer”. If the entertainment is most important to you, why not plan a 4 course meal instead of 5 courses. You may be able to upgrade to a better Band or DJ if you don’t spend too much of your budget on extra frills like 2 bottles of wine on every table, baskets in the rest rooms or an expensive dessert table. In the end, the budget priorities you set at the very start of your planning will determine the ultimate outcome of the event. Remember, “Quality doesn’t cost...it pays”! One important factor, perhaps less obvious than the music and the food, is selecting the right location. No, this isn’t a paragraph from a Real Estate seminar but, you do need to understand the importance of your venue choice for a number of reasons. Location is just as important if you are planning a birthday party with just 80 guests or an annual corporate party for 800 guests. For the function to go well, without doubt dancing will be involved. An adjacent pub

or a bar located in another room will split your guests into groups and may ruin an otherwise cohesive function. Diverting too many guests from the main room usually means the dance floor will suffer. Good entertainment only needs an audience, and the full potential of any show is always better with a packed house. An audience that has another place to congregate can divide and conquer your function.If your function is to incorporate a sit down meal, try to arrange your tables so that older guests are not right next to the music. The best time to start a buffet or serving stations is right after the cocktail hour concludes or within 15 minutes of the arrival of your guest of honor. Tables may be called by your Master of Ceremonies in any order that you decide. Please have a list ready in advance if the order is not sequential, starting with table number one. Serving Stations or Buffets that have been set up on or around the dance floor should be removed after a pre-determined time limit. You should specify this detail to your function co-ordinator or caterer, as tables left on the dance floor will delay getting the party started after the meal is over. This will maximize the dancing/entertainment time for your guests. If possible, always try to keep mobile bars, sweet tables, cappuccino machines and any other after dinner u OCIO axarquía

During a sit down dinner, the right music played at a comfortable volume level can make a good meal even more enjoyable. All caterers, country clubs, hotels, restaurants and function facilities are concerned with basically the same thing: serving you and your guests a good hot meal. Ask your caterer how long they think the meal itself will last. This will depend on

the number of courses, the number of people at your function and the efﬁciency of the service. While it is difﬁcult to predict an exact time due to all the variables, the average sit-down meal usually lasts about 11/2 to 2 hours. I have seen many a function nearly ruined by a 3+ hour meal that leaves little or no time for dancing afterwards. One good way to save the day is to allow guests to dance in-between dinner courses. It can make a long, drawn-out, multicourse meal pass more quickly and also “warms up” the audience for the faster dancing to follow. This style of services will also take

a little pressure off the service team. If more than 2 or 3 small children will be attending your party, their typical innocent activities will inhibit guests from dancing for fear of hurting the little ones. I have seen many functions enjoy a great deal of success with a special designated “childrens table”, which is decorated to appeal to the youngsters. Find a reliable caretaker to watch them, supervise their meal and then entertain them with colouring, games and activities throughout your event. This proven method is great for the children, but also gives their parents a chance to enjoy the party and dance knowing their children are safe and well cared for. The planning and timing of certain events at the function can also affect the fate of your party. Failing to plan is planning to fail, some say. But overplanning your party can be just as bad. Try not to “time-schedule” your party to death, because nothing on earth involving the “human element” ever goes exactly as planned. Expect the unexpected and allow for ﬂexibility in your plans wherever possible. Remember, this is your party too, so leave as much as possible to the professionals and enjoy yourself. n
