T
he cost of borrowing in Europe continues to drop, which is great news for investors. Rates are falling to historic lows: The 12-month Euro Interbank Offer Rate (Euribor) of interest slid to an all-time low of 0.198%, and over the course of March averaged out at 0.212%. Rates have more than halved from this time last year. Those mortgage holders who are due an annual review will find that their repayment instalments fall over the next year, which should give them savings of around 200 euros a year. Euribor is expected to remain at very low levels for the foreseeable future, and this in turn should encourage more competition between banks to offer better rates and better value loans. Favourable currency exchange rates are making the investment environment particularly welcoming to foreign buyers. Buyers from Britain are benefitting from the pound’s strength against the euro; at the beginning of April 2015, £1 was worth around 1.38 euros. Swiss buyers are also in a better position than they were a year ago, after the Swiss National Bank decoupled its franc from the euro. The relatively strong Swiss franc has also made Spain a more attractive investment destination for the 06 OCIO magazine
Borrowing costs plummet as Euribor hits all-time low Swiss, as investors enjoy an increase in buying power. However, while it’s becoming ever-cheaper for foreign investors to buy in Spain, it certainly can’t beat the recent deal in which a four-bedroom house sold for only 10 euros in Spain’s first-ever house raffle. The Bolumar family had inherited the house and originally listed it for 90,000 euros, but after the struggling Spanish property market failed to find a buyer they came up with their innovative solution – but as pioneers of the Spanish house raffle, the Bolumars had to overcome red-tape challenges with the local tax authorities. Their persistence paid off: More than 32,000 tickets were eventually sold for 10 euros each by the Bolumars, with interest coming from buyers not only across Spain, but around the world too. Even after paying to publicise the raffle (including maintaining a website), the family recouped the original sale price of the house and netted a further 10,000 euros.
The Bolumars also generously paid all the taxes on the transfer of the 141 square metre home, with no strings attached. “For the price of just 10 euros someone has won a house in perfect condition and they won’t have to pay a cent more because all the costs are included,” Pepe Bolumar, grandson of the house’s original owner, told Spain’s El Mundo newspaper. “If you’re trying to sell your home and it’s not working, this might be the solution for you.” Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. n The friendly experts at Currencies Direct are only a phone call away whenever you need them. The Buyers Return The international buyers are back in force and looking for holiday homes all along the coastal regions and inland too. Property journalist Heather Perkins tells us more.
T
he miserable winters in the UK and the usual cold temperatures throughout the Scandanavian countries have certainly helped concentrate buyers’ minds on a place in the sun. European banks have certainly suffered during the financial crisis but mortgage lenders still have money to lend to foreign investors in Spain. Falling property prices over recent years across many European destinations – in some instances by as much as 50% – mean that the chance of owning a place in the sun may never be better. and a weak Euro mean it’s become even more affordable for foreign buyers. Undoubtedly, the most popular European destination for holiday homes is Spain. any of Andalucia’s towns and villages are the homes to genuine artistic treasures, which the visitor often passes by unsuspectingly. These include paintings, sculptures, jewels, carvings and archaeological remains, all of which bear witness to the region’s extraordinary artistic and creative heritage. As you visit the many towns and cities of the region you will notice that there is still a thriving network of traditional arts and crafts, creating tomorrows treasures and artefacts. Street and village markets are often wonderful places to discover the local artists and craftsmen/women at work, often making and selling their wares right there on the premises. It is worth noting that the traditional arts and crafts of Andalucia owe their heritage to various cultures that have settled here over the ages. The legacy of the Tartessians, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, Romans and the Arabs covers a vast spectrum of techniques and styles that are still alive in Andalucia’s traditional crafts. Many local artifacts have fallen out of use, due to the development of synthetic materials and mass production but, efforts are being made to lovingly restore and conserve these traditional skills and keep them alive. Weaving is very prominant throughout Andalucia and there are still many fine weavers using the traditional hand operated looms. For the production of craft articles for export, such as the wool blankets of Grazalema in the province of Cadiz, the more modern techniques and equipment are employed. Merece la pena darse cuenta que los artes y oficios de Andalucía deben su legado a las
varias culturas que se han asentado aquí a lo largo de los siglos. El legado de los tártasos, de los fenicios, de los griegos, los romanos y los árabes abarca un amplio espectro de técnicas y estilos que siguen vivos en los oficios tradicionales de Andalucía. Muchos artefactos locales han caído en el desuso, debido al desarrollo de materiales sintéticos y la producción masiva pero, sin embargo, se están haciendo esfuerzos para restaurar y conservar, con cariño, estas habilidades tradicionales para mantenerlas con vida. Tejer es muy importante por toda Andalucía, y todavía hoy día existen muchos buenos tejedores que utilizan telares manuales. Para la producción de artículos artesanales destinados a la exportación, como por ejemplo las mantas de lana de Grazalema, en la provincia de Cádiz, se emplean las técnicas y equipos más actuales. La factoría que se denomina “La Madraza”, en Málaga, por ejemplo, es bien conocida por su producción de alfombras tradicionales, tapices y otros textiles decorativos, incorporando motivos de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Hay tanto por allí para descubrir y disfrutar, así que tómese su tiempo para salir en busca de un poco de la historia, artesanía y cultura …. ¡y quién sabe cuáles tesoros podrá encontrar! n

ith Summer just around the corner, thoughts turn to the younger family members and what to offer them to keep them entertained throughout the summer months. Well, Vals in Torre del Mar have a few great solutions for you. Each Summer, Vals organises their Summer Camp programme, of which there are many and various options for your family to enjoy. For example, the ‘Campamento de Verano’ (24th June until 9th September), offers an activity camp for ages 3 years all the way up to 19 years. The camp operates Monday to Friday with hours that are flexible to suit you. 10am to 2pm or 10am to 5pm are the general session times but there is an opportunity to start as early as 7.30am and finish as late as 8pm. Additionally there is a ‘Campamento de Fútbol’ for children 4 to 16 years of age and operates 2 week long camps from 1 July until 15th August. Another popular option is the English Summer Camp for children 4 to 13 years of age. This camp offers full immersion into the English language with all the activities being run in English. These camps are two week events and run from 1st July until the 15th August. Each of the summer camps offered will keep your younger ones fully entertained with tennis, padel, swimming, football, dance classes, basketball, mini golf and so much more. There are even excursions to Tivoli World and Aquavelis for the children to enjoy. Prices for the summer camps naturally vary depending on age, camp required, dates and length of camp desired. on el verano a la vuelta de la esquina, los pensamientos se centran en los miembros más jóvenes de la familia y en qué ofrecerles para mantenerles entretenidos durante los meses de verano. Pues, Vals en Torre del Mar le ofrece una buenas soluciones. Todos los veranos, Vals organiza su programa de Campamentos de Verano, con muchas y diversas opciones para el disfrute de su familia. A modo de ejemplo, el Campamento de Verano (del 24 de junio hasta el 9 de setiembre) ofrece un campamento de actividades para edades de 3 hasta 19. El campamento funciona de lunes a viernes, con horario flexible a convenir. verybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures available to help you improve the look of yours. Many people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from daily brushing and regular cleanings at their dentist, but if you decide you would like to go beyond this to make your smile look brighter, you should investigate a few whitening options. Start by speaking with your dentist. He or she can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you because whiteners may not correct all types of discolouration. If, however, you are a candidate for whitening there are several options available to you. By far the most effective and safe option is with your dentist. A procedure with your dentist usually requires only one visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth, and a special light may be used. Lasers are also an effective treatment for tooth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the whitening agent. There are also various products that can be used at home. These products invariably contain peroxide to actually bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a mouthguard. Usage regimens vary. There are potential side effects, such as increased sensitivity or gum irritation, so do speak with your dentist if you have any concerns. Finally there are simple whitening toothpastes. All toothpastes help remove surface stain through the action of mild abrasives but ‘whitening’ toothpastes can have special chemical or polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Unlike bleaches, these products do not change the colour of teeth, they can only remove stains on the surface In all cases it really is a good idea to speak with your dentist before embarking on any of the above proceedures. n

A day in the dirt with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk I
f there was an award for Most Underutilised Vehicle Segment, there’s no question the distinction would go to the sport/utility category. Sure, sports cars and their maniacal siblings, supercars fall into the same trap, but I’m assuming most of those owners make the occasional run to redline or now and then take that motorway off-ramp at something approaching double the speed limit. It’s true the vast majority of Ferrari owners will never set a tire on an actual racetrack, but most will get a sense for their car’s special skill set, probing acceleration, braking, and handling limits at least a few times on some deserted back road. Sometimes, the result is bent sheetmetal and bruised egos, but that’s another conversation. Likewise, the typical 4x4 owner will never even engage 4 Low in the transfer case. The difference is that opportunities to use a vehicle like the Cherokee Trailhawk to its fullest don’t come readily on the road. 34 OCIO magazine
The truth is, there’s just no way to really experience the capability of an off-roadready vehicle if it’s not taken off-road. And I don’t mean just over parking curbs. There’s no good way to get even a taste of the experience without venturing off the beaten path for real. With that in mind, a few weeks ago I visited my brother who now lives with his family, and his Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, in the U.S.A. So we took the opportunity to gas up the Jeep and head toward the offroad trail closest to his house. At the point where asphalt turns to dirt, the fun begins. The trail starts off easy enough as it climbs back into the hills, with mostly loose dirt and small rocks and no real obstacles save for a few drought-ravaged dry stream crossings. Ultimately, the trail gets steeper, the going gets tougher, and we are now in low gear, crawling along over larger rocks and other seriously uneven terrain. The Trailhawk eats it up, never getting remotely close to stuck.
There are several off-road mode settings available, but we’re doing fine in Auto. It’s more than 90 degrees outside, but we’ve got the climate control set to 68 degrees and the water temperature needle is pegged in the middle at normal operating temp. After turning onto Main Divide Road we quickly climb from just a few hundred feet above the level of the Pacific Ocean to more than 3000 feet. The trail follows the spine of the mountain’s ridge. It’s a broken, rocky stretch and we’re well beyond the point that would leave front or rear drivers spinning their wheels, but through it all the Cherokee Trailhawk doesn’t miss a beat. Eventually we reach the turnaround point. A quick post-trail inspection shows the Trailhawk to be in perfect order, save for desperately needing a wash. The day proved to be an experience that every true 4x4 vehicle owner should enjoy. It’s what these vehicles are built for... and they simply love it! n

i existiera un premio para el Segmento de Vehículos más Infrautilizados, no cabe duda de que semejante distinción caería en la categoría de deportes/utilitario. Seguro que los coches deportivos y sus hermanos maníacos - los supercoches - caen en la misma trampa. Pero lo digo tomando por sentado que la mayoría de los propietarios hacen un recorrido rápido o, de vez en cuando, cogen la autopista a doble velocidad del límite. Es verdad que la gran mayoría de los propietarios de Ferrari nunca pisarían con un neumático una pista de carreras de verdad, pero la mayoría cogerían el sentido de las capacidades de su coche, comprobando la aceleración, el frenado y los límites de manejo al menos unas pocas veces en alguna carretera secundaria desierta. A veces el resultado es chapa metálica torcida y egos lastimados, pero esa es otra historia. Asimismo, el típico propietario de los todoterreno nunca lo metería en la 4ª baja. La diferencia es que las oportunidades para usar un vehículo como el Cherokee Trailhawk al máximo no llegan fácilmente en carretera. Lo cierto es que no hay manera de experimentar la capacidad de un vehículo preparado para ir campo a través si no se le saca de la carretera. Y no quiero decir simplemente sobrepasando el bordillo. No existe una buena manera de saborear la experiencia sin aventurarse fuera de los caminos habituales. Con ello, hace unas semanas yo visité a mi
hermano quien ahora vive con su familia, y su Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, en los E.E.U.U. Así que aprovechamos la oportunidad de cargarle de gasolina al Jeep y coger rumbo hacia la pista fuera de carretera más cercana a su casa. En el punto en el que el asfalto se convierte en fango, allí empieza la diversión. La pista arranca lo suficientemente fácil como para subir por los montes, principalmente con fango suelto y piedras, sin verdaderos obstáculos, salvo por unas travesías de riachuelos secos debido a la sequía. A continuación, la pista se pone cada vez más inclinada, cada vez más dura, y ya estamos en marcha baja, arrastrándonos por encima de rocas más grandes y terreno extremadamente desigual. El Trailhawk se lo come, y no es fácil que se quede atrincado. Dispone de varias modalidades de conducción
fuera de carretera, aunque vamos bien en modalidad Auto. Hace más de 90 grados Fahrenheit allí fuera, pero el control de temperatura está fijado en 68 grados, con la aguja de la temperatura del agua por la mitad, dentro del rango de temperatura normal. Después de acceder a la Carretera de Main Divide, rápidamente ascendemos unos pocos centenares de pies por encima del nivel del Océano Pacífico hasta más de 3.000 pies. Más tarde, alcanzamos el punto de girar. Una rápida inspección después de pasar por la pista muestra que el Trailhawk se encuentra en perfecto estado, salvo por la necesidad urgente de un lavado. El día resultó ser una experiencia de la que todo propietario de un vehículo todoterreno disfrutaría. Y para esto están construidos estos vehículos … ¡y realmente les encanta! n OCIO magazine

t is often said that one of summer’s pleasures in Spain is eating fresh sardines, roasted on a fire in the salt air at the beach. For readers new to the art of sardines allow me to explain. The sardines are speared on skewers stuck into the sand in front of the flames and grilled until crackly. The aroma is irresistible, tantalizing. You pick them up in your fingers and eat the flesh off the bones. Accompanied by icy cold beer and chunks of fresh bread to absorb the drips, sardines make a memorable meal. Spanish humorist and commentator on life, Julio Camba, once wrote “with sardines, you should never eat fewer than a dozen, but watch how you eat them, where you eat them and with whom you eat them.” “Sardines”, he added, “are not to be consumed at home with the virtuous wife, but out with a shameless hussy not afraid to get her fingers greasy. People once united in eating sardines together, will never be able to mutually respect each other again, so, when you, dear reader, wish to organize a sardine feast, choose well your accomplices.” His sentiment is because the pungent salty-smoky smell of grilled sardines clings to ones fingers, chin, moustache and clothes long after the feast is finished. Sardines, plentiful both in the south (Mediterranean) and the north (Atlantic and Bay of Biscay), are of the blue fish family, related to herring. They are a 48 OCIO magazine

Vino Español 40 years of Spanish Wine Words: James Harley-Woods
W
hen I first began travelling the wine roads of Spain in the early 1970s, the state of Spanish wine and food was dramatically different than it is today. Most wineries back then were rustic and used time-honored, often ancient, techniques to vinify grapes and age their wines. They were imbued with the romance of Old Spain and were aged in old barrels, often in moldy, cobweblaced, ancient caves. I loved tasting them. However, while some of the wines were excellent on the spot when served with down-to-earth Spanish food like baby lamb chops grilled over vine cuttings, air-cured hams and artisan cheeses, many of the wines were not built to travel. Back then, there were wonderful rustic restaurants with legendary regional dishes that were often the object of gastronomic pilgrimages by Spanish aficionados. The meals were often served with fantastic local wines which again tasted simply divine in their natural environment but would recreating the ‘Spanish experience’ outside of Spain be viable. In those days I often wished that the Spaniards would figure out how to get those deeply flavoured, ruby-coloured Duero Valley wines, in Aranda de Duero, served in earthenware pitchers, in shape to sell in foreign markets. For most foreigners, Spanish wines conjured up visions of a hot Mediterranean 52 OCIO magazine
country that produced robust oak-aged reds, mediocre whites, cheap bubbly and Sherries that usually remained unopened on restaurant and retail shelves. I needn’t have concerned myself because since then, there has been an explosion in the quality and breadth of Spanish wines comparable to that of California in the 1970s and 1980s. And many experts believe that the wine, along with the food in Spain these days, is better than it is in any other country in Europe. In the past five years in Rioja alone, scores of new wineries and new expensive modern international style alta expresión wines have surfaced, partly in answer to a profusion of domestic challenges from
international style wines that have become media stars and partly to compete with the new generation of French wines, the boutique wines of California and Italy’s super Tuscans. As a 30-year observer of the Spanish wine scene, nothing that the talented, industrious wine people of this vibrant country accomplish surprises me anymore. With more acreage under vine than any wine producing country in the world, many special microclimates, great grapes and more accomplished winemakers, there’s no question of a remarkable future ahead for Spanish wines...and limitless enjoyment to be reached in drinking them. n

uando a principios de los 70 comencé a viajar por los caminos del vino español, el vino y la comida española eran totalmente diferentes a lo que es hoy en día. La mayoría de las bodegas eran rústicas y utilizaban técnicas de larga tradición y a menudo antiguas, para elaborar vino a partir de sus uvas y datarlos correctamente. Todo estaba imbuido en el romanticismo de la vieja España, se envejecía en antiguas cuevas y en barricas viejas a menudo cubiertas de moho y telarañas. Me encantaba probarlos, sin embargo mientras algunos de los vinos eran excelentes in situ, acompañados con comida de la tierra, como las chuletas de cordero lechal a la parrilla servido sobre sarmientos, jamones curados al aire y quesos artesanales, muchos de ellos vinos no estaban preparados para viajar. En aquel entonces, había maravillosos restaurantes rústicos con legendarios platos regionales que a menudo eran objeto de peregrinaciones gastronómicas. Las comidas a menudo se servían con fantásticos vinos de la tierra que sabían
divinamente en su ambiente natural, pero... ¿esa “experiencia española” era viable fuera de España? En aquellos días, a menudo, deseaba que los españoles se dieran cuenta de cómo conseguir que esos sabores profundos y el color rubí de los vinos del valle de Aranda del Duero que se servían en jarras de barro, se vendieran en mercados extranjeros. Para la mayoría de los extranjeros, los vinos españoles se conjuraban bajo la visión de un cálido país del Mediterráneo que producía robustos tintos envejecidos en roble, blancos mediocres, burbujeantes y baratos y el Jerez, que por lo general permanecían sin abrir en las estanterías de restaurantes y tiendas. No hacía falta mi preocupación, porque desde entonces ha habido una explosión en la calidad y en la crianza de los vinos españoles sólo comparable a la de California en los años 1970 y 1980. Muchos expertos creen que hoy en día el vino y la comida española es mejor que la de cualquier otro país de Europa. En
los últimos cinco años solamente en La Rioja, han surgido decenas de nuevas bodegas y una alta variedad de vinos caros, que expresan modernidad y estilo internacional. En parte como respuesta a los continuos desafíos domésticos para producir vinos con estilo internacional, algunos de ellos se han convertido en estrellas de los medios y en parte también por la competencia con la nueva generación de vinos franceses, las boutiques de vinos de California y los súper Toscanos de Italia.
