Whenwe’re feeling a bit down, stressed or fed up, it’s very tempting to seek solace in food, particularly with sugary or high carbohydrate snacks such as cakes, biscuits or ultra processed fast foods. They provide us with a quick fix of energy, and the sense that we’ve somehow treated ourselves…but when the blood sugar rush subsides, the low they leave us with can make us feel even worse than before. So, what’s the answer? What can we reach for to boost our mood? Well, recent research has shown that eating the right foods can improve brain health, cognitive function and increase the levels of feel-good chemicals in our bodies.

Amazing Anthocyanins: When you want a bit of a pep talk, reach for something purple. Purple foods such as blueberries, red grapes, and beetroot all contain anthocyanins which improve brain function and are said to reduce the likelihood of depression by a whopping 39%! Not to mention the antioxidant content which helps balance our blood sugar and reduce cellular ageing.

Terrific Tryptophans: Foods that contain tryptophans have been proven to reduce irritability, and increase a sense of well-being. We don’t make this compound in the body, so in order to get the benefit, we have to include it in our diet. Whole milk, canned tuna and turkey are all high in tryptophans as are oats, nuts and seeds.

Awesome Omegas: Studies have shown that high doses of omega 3 increase the brain’s ability to heal and can even aid in producing new neural pathways. Ongoing studies indicate that it could be a powerful weapon against age related dementia. Omega 3 is found in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel. It is also present in flax seeds, chia seeds, avocado and walnuts.

Lovely Lentils: Both beans and lentils contain a range of B vitamins. Low levels of these vitamins especially B12 and B9 (folate) have been linked to low mood and higher rates of depression. A B3 (niacin) deficiency also leads to fatigue, low mood and cognitive decline. Eating a portion of beans or lentils every day has been shown to reduce weight gain and LDL cholesterol.

Remarkable Resveratrol: The powerful anti-oxidant properties of resveratrol are currently being studied, with a view to using it as an alternative to pharmaceutical antidepressants, and anti-anxiety drugs. In a small study, this compound which is found in

La leche entera, el atún enlatado y el pavo son ricos en triptófano, al igual que la avena, las nueces y semillas.

Wefirst had the pleasure of playing Alhaurin Golf back in the summer of 2019 and each time we have visited since has resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf. It doesn’t matter how many times you visit and play this wonderful course, you cannot fail to be impressed with the course, the incredible views of the Sierra de Mijas and the Mediterranean Sea and the natural beauty that surrounds you on each and every hole.

The course has been skillfully and artistically carved out of the natural landcsape, proividing you with the perfect setting for an enjoyable round of golf. The course itself offers 18 holes with a par of 72 and was designed by the unforgettable and legendary Severiano Ballesteros. Given the location of the course it will come as no surprise that the terrain is uneven, creating many challenges along the way no matter what your handicap is. The course consists of 5 par 3 holes, 5 par 5 holes and 8 par 4 holes, all of which are unique, creating a challenging, demanding, original and fun round of golf.

As you navigate the 18 holes you will enjoy the magnificent contrast offered by the well maintained treelined fairways, the natural roughs and even the wild environment of the Sierra de Mijas. The greens are tricky with many of them being slightly elevated, but once you reach them, putting is a real pleasure due to the quality. Along with the main course, Alhaurin Golf also offers an additional par 3 course to enjoy. Not only is this a perfect place to start playing golf, but it’s also perfect for practicing your short game. Additional practice areas include several driving bays with wide open space, a putting green and an approach shot area.

Inside the Club House, the Pro Shop stands out as one of the most complete in Andalusia and the impressive bar, lounge and large terrace is open to both players and non-players alike. So feel free to call in and see what Alhaurin Golf has to offer.

We at OCIO magazine are regular visitors to the wonderful Marbella Golf Country Club. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Senior, this famous course provides one of the best and most challenging golfing experiences on the Costa Del Sol.

The course has been artistically carved out of the natural landscape, creating 18 individual and challenging holes for you to enjoy.

From the yellow tees the course plays at 5551 metres with a par 72.

As you play the course, you become very aware of the established and mature nature of it all and the surrounding hills, olive groves and magnificent sea views

provide a breathtaking backdrop for your round of golf. You will further note I am sure, that this is a course that has been meticulously maintained by the team of professional greenkeepers. The tees are large, the fairways offer plenty of green grass for you to land your tee shot and the greens are nothing short of fantastic. The greens are soft on the approach shot giving plenty of hold, and present a putting surface that runs true and fast. Putting is a real pleasure on such wonderful greens.

In addition to a fabulous course, the club offers excellent practice facilities which include a driving range, a short game area with a bunker and a large putting green, all of which are situated

right next to the magnificent club house. Speaking of which, the clubhouse offers a well stocked pro-shop, a large relaxing bar and lounge complete with a full size snooker table, a beautiful restaurant and several terraces with views over the course all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea.

Memberships are available but you do not need to be a member to play here. Booking a tee time couldn’t be easier. It can be done online or by calling the pro shop directly.

Sitienes un perro con problemas de conducta, en algún momento seguramente te has culpado por su comportamiento. Es fácil sentirse abrumado por la culpa y preguntarte constantemente qué has hecho mal. O qué puedes haber hecho para empeorar las cosas.

¡Es hora de darte un respiro! La mayoría de los propietarios de mascotas quieren que sus perros vivan lo mejor posible, no quieren que su perro sienta la necesidad de ladrar o gruñir a otros perros o personas. que disfruten persiguiendo conejos… ¡o cualquier otra cosa que se mueva! El mastín español se desarrolló como un perro guardián de ganado, normalmente tienen un ladrido fuerte y pueden ser recelosos ante cualquier novedad.

El temperamento de los perros también se ve directamente afectado por sus padres. Si su madre era audaz y segura, probablemente heredarán estas características. Si su padre era un perro miedoso, tendrán más posibilidades de ser perros nerviosos. Incluso les afectan los niveles de estrés de su madre durante la gestación.

Las primeras 12-16 semanas de vida del perro se conocen como el período crítico.

Esta es la etapa en la que necesitan verse expuestos, cuidadosamente, al mundo en el que queremos que vivan. Después de este periodo les costará más adaptarse a experiencias nuevas.

Algunos aprendizajes críticos ocurren cuando algo, normalmente negativo, sucede una sola vez y se graba en su memoria. Un perro grande corre a acorralarles, así que ahora les asustan todos los perros grandes. Un petardo explota cuando nos dirigimos a su parque favorito, así que ahora no quiere ir al parque.

It’s time to give yourself a break! Most pet dog owners want their dogs to live the best life possible, they don’t want their dog to feel the need to bark or lunge at other dogs or people. They don’t intentionally set their dog up to fail. There are a great many factors which influence how a dog behaves.

Humans have been selectively breeding dogs for hundreds of years to enhance specific breed traits. Border collies, for example, are genetically predisposed to eye, stalk, and chase. If they don’t have an outlet for that behaviour, they will find their own, often herding cars! Podencos are a hunting breed, it should be no surprise that they enjoy chasing rabbits…or anything else that moves! The Spanish Mastin was developed as a livestock guardian dog, they usually have a big bark and can be wary of anything new.

Dogs’ temperaments are also directly affected by their parents. If their mum was bold and confident, they are likely to inherit those traits. If their father was afraid of everything, they’re more likely to be a nervous dog. They are even affected by the stress levels of their mother during her pregnancy.

We call the first 12-16 weeks of a dog’s life the critical period. This is the time they need to be gently exposed to the world in which we wish them to live. After this period, they will take longer and be more suspicious of new experiences. One trial learning occurs when something, usually negative, happens just once and it is committed to memory. A big dog runs towards and pins them down, so now they are afraid of all big dogs. A firework goes off when they walk into their favourite park, now they don’t want to walk through the park. Training methods used also affect behaviour, the use of prong, choke and shock collars are now known to have negative fallout. Forcing dogs to perform behaviours by physical manipulation of their body, pokes, lead jerks and similar also can have unwanted side effects. If you’ve used these training methods on your dog, however, don’t beat yourself up. Unfortunately, there are still many people who continue to use and advertise these methods as effective training. You do the best you can until you know better!

I hope at you can now understand there are many reasons why dogs develop behaviour problems. Every dog is an individual and we must treat it as such. The most important thing to remember is you can get professional help from a force free, qualified trainer who can help make your lives better.

We’rebig fans of the Ford Ranger, and seeing as the Ranger is also the best-selling pick-up truck in Europe, we’re clearly not alone in our admiration.

The previous-generation model was on sale for more than a decade, and had a trophy cabinet fit to burst, however it was very much feeling its age by the time it was laid to rest. That’s when the all-new Ranger strolled into town.

The Ranger is now longer and wider, with a more square-jawed look to the front end. Combined with the distinctive C-shaped lights and large blue oval in the middle of the wide grille, the Ranger has a rather imposing look.

The competition in the pick-up class isn’t what it once was. The Nissan Navara, Mercedes X-Class and Mitsubishi L200 are all retired from duty, leaving the Toyota Hilux as Ranger’s closest competition.

Electrification is the aim of the game in the automotive industry right now, as it seems every model is either going electric or being fitted with some kind of hybrid system. However, the Ranger has stuck with classic diesel power for the most part, which has done nothing to change the pick-up’s uneconomical reputation.

The Ford Ranger has always been near to the top of the pick-up class in terms of safety, and the latest model is no different. It was put through Euro NCAP’s battery of crash tests in 2022 and was awarded a five-star safety rating for its efforts. All Rangers come with several airbags, seatbelt reminder, ABS, Ford’s ESP+ stability control system, collision mitigation, speed sign recognition, lane keeping aid and a rear-view camera. Additional safety kit is available including a 360-degree camera set-up, lane change warning, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise

control.

Unsurprisingly, the Ranger feels very big to drive on European roads, but no more than a full-size SUV does. In fact, because of the Ranger’s high-set driving position you get a commanding view ahead that’s better than most SUVs, although the tall bonnet does limit the view immediately ahead. When driving a vehicle of this size and nature, parking is always going to be tricky. Thankfully models like our Wildtrak test truck come with parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system which, combined with relatively light steering, made parking fairly easy once you get used to it.

The Ford Ranger’s interior was already upmarket, at least by pick-up truck standards, but the latest model has gone a good few steps further. .As soon as you climb in, your eyes are drawn to the enormous touchscreen that dominates the dashboard. It’s also nice to see Ford hasn’t given up on good old fashioned physical buttons, with an array of them below the central touchscreen for the climate control and volume.

There’s no shortage of information available on the crisp digital instrument panel, from fuel economy to 4x4 status. The display also changes depending on which drive mode you select.

Every October, carved pumpkins peer out from the windows and doorways of houses in almost every town you care to mention. These bright orange fruits inscribed with ghoulish faces and illuminated by candles are a sure sign of the Halloween season.

The traditional name given to these decorated pumpkins is a ‘Jack O’Lantern’. People have been making ‘Jack O’Lanterns’ at Halloween for centuries but the practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.” According to Irish folklore, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn’t want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to skip paying the drinks bill and instead decided to keep the money. He is said to have put the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down. Again he was only freed once he had promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavoury character into heaven. The Devil, upset by the tricks Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell either. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with it ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

Immigrants from these countries took the ‘Jack O’Lantern’ tradition with them when they went to the United States. They soon found that pumpkins, a fruit native to America, made perfect Jack O’Lanterns and the tradition of using pumpkins at Halloween to make ‘Jack O’Lanterns, continues to this day all around the world.
