Meremere Dragway Father’s Day Drags 2020

Screaming V8’s and smokin tyres! …. HELL YEAH!

I love this day! What an awesome way to spend Father’s Day, catching up with your mates, yarning over the sound of screaming V8’s, watching smoke billowing from squealing tyres and checking out some good old school drag racing!

It’s not just about the drag racing here either, the pit area and back field are full with cool old school muscle cars, hot rods and drag cars taking you right back to the golden era when the hill at Meremere was filled with the people, all there to soak up the excitement of screaming V8’s and speed.

Wandering around the pit area you could easily mistake it for a hot rod show. It’s easy to see it’s not just me that thinks this day is cool! With all the ups and downs of being locked away with Covid at the time, it was obvious people were just hanging to get out into it again!

This day is always massive at Meremere, the excitement in the air just coming up to Father’s Day is like letting the puppies out of a cage!

Open to USA and Aussie V8’s only this really is like the old school days on the hill and today was no different. It was awesome to see crowds gathering on top of the hill again and the stands full of people. This event is one of the more popular events in the drag season.

As always at Meremere during this time of year, the morning starts chilly and somewhat foggy, but once the sun creeps through the clouds, she’s a good day out in the sun at the track. Some good times were being achieved throughout the day with some cool grudge racing going on as well.

Blowers seem to be more and more prevalent these days with some cool set ups rolling up to the start line. The sight of a twin blown Holden ute rolling up in the grid must put a smile on your face, unless you are rolling up beside him anyway!

The entertainment is full on, you can either park up and watch the racing or wander the field and check out the cool rides laying about.

Midday brings on the Burger Fuel Burnout session, although only one competitor rolled up for a skid session so that was an easy win, with an amazing display shredding a tyre for the crowd before getting lost in the plume of smoke.

The pits are always busy with lots of tinkering going on to get that extra mile per hour or instant repair jobs to get back out and onto the grid again.

As always, the food stalls are cranking out lots of hot goodies. Vendors are selling goodies for the cave or engine parts to treat the rides on Father’s Day as well, so it’s a fantastic event for a day out.

This is a day well worth getting in your diary for later this year, it’s an epic day for REV HEADS!

LINCOLNSTEIN NEIL & RHONDA M c NICKLE’S

If you’re thinking this is straight out of a 1950’s sci-fi movie, you wouldn’t be wrong!

With the name of Lincolnstein you can bet there’s been some creations gone into the building of this machine that would scare a modern-day mechanic!

If you ever get the chance to jump in one of these for a ride, seriously DO IT! It will be about the only time that you will get the chance to actually see what was involved in the building of these incredible automobiles.

The ride itself is like floating on a layer of air but not bouncy castle like, it’s actually very smooth. For a vehicle from way back then, It will honestly blow your mind!

Designed for the wealthy of the time and worth more than the average house to buy, you can bet there is every possible comfort option and shiny chrome lever or button to push to make you go “damn, it does that too!”

It really is hard to believe that way back in 1959, Ford Motor Company thought, let’s build something totally cool and outrageous to take over the luxury automobile world to the point where they damn near couldn’t afford to do it anymore.

Although this amazing example now didn’t quite look a wealthy luxury car when Neil found it.

Neil was busy trying to find one in the States to bring back but found this one sitting in Hamilton.

Complete with Texas dust in everything, no brakes and in need of desperate help, the engine still ran so that was it!

That was around seventeen years ago and this piece of fifties art got driven around a fair bit before finally being parked up for a full rebuild around eleven years back.

As most full rebuilds go, things stop and start and other projects roll in and out the door, but

this one was there to stay for sure!

Neil’s throw-back to the early days of cruising around in it stayed with the helicopter landing pad graphic being fully detailed onto the boot lid which goes to show the size of that boot lid! The actual boot now is fully detailed inside which could easily act as a bedroom for Neil if need be.

The interior of this vehicle is simply ‘stunning’ for a word. Everything is big! Big leg room, big arm rests, big vents and the seats themselves are more comfy than your lounge suite!

Electric windows don’t just stop at the side windows, the back window also rolls down with the magic of electricity. This was probably the electric car of the era with the amount of switches that make things happen.

There’s been a few custom tricks done to accentuate the 1959 styling tho. A few delicate touches to keep the spaceship lines flowing. The front fenders have been extended three

and a half inches (90mm for you youngin’s) door handles shaved and recess handles dropped into the top of the door frames.

The rear fins have been de-chromed and reshaped to blend into the flowing lines to accentuate the designers vision back in the day.

The detailing in this vehicle is simply stunning from factory it really didn’t need a lot to give it the stance and look that it has.

The paint job certainly isn’t from back in the day. The full custom layers of colour is a work of art by itself. Complete with scallops, lace work and metallic gold detailing, this luxury liner is now a show piece of art for sure.

NZHRA STREET ROD NATIONALS

Cool cars, cool planes and lots of shiny bits!

This was such an awesome show!

The Bay Rodders Tauranga Hot Rod Club put this awesome event on for the 2020 NZHRA Street Rod Nationals including a weekend full of cruising, crazy games and a mystery tiki tour for those who entered for the whole weekend.

The Show Day for the public to view these cool builds was held at the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum, perfect for showcasing these cool builds from the era. The museum also includes the AvGas Café and Bar so it was perfect for a day out for entrants and the general public to get along and enjoy the day.

Mount Maunganui is pretty much always abuzz with cool cars cruising the beach but this weekend stepped it up a few notches.

The standard Bay of Plenty sunshine was cranking and set the stage for the day to be a goodie.

Around two hundred and forty cars rolled into the museum grounds to park up and form an amazing display amongst the classic old aeroplanes already on display. Walking into the show certainly put a smile on your dial, it felt like stepping back in time for sure!

Everything from cool custom hot rod builds to tough looking street machines were on display with a few builds debuting at the show.

There seemed to have been a fair few people busy over the covid period tinkering away in their caves to have their rides ready for this day!

The standard of the finish certainly showed

the effort involved. You could quite easily compare some of the builds with the top show cars from Australia who tend to get trailered around, whereas these were driven. The public certainly appreciated seeing the cars cruising the Mount over the weekend as the grounds were full of people checking out the cars and entertainment.

Barriers and cones set the stage for a fun gymkhana session for those who felt like a play.

Karl Boniface’s “Nitro Flashback” and Dave Gould’s “Nightmare” fired up to blow the crowd’s ears back a notch and tear up some rubber to show just what a Nitro snorting engine can do!

If you haven’t experienced the eye watering, air pressure compression punch and scream

2020

of a Nitro car, then you are fully in for an experience when you do for the first time! The only word for it is “unbelievable”.

A few other rodders joined in for the “Go to Woah” time trial competition with a couple needing further education in what a “Stop” sign actually means, but their enthusiasm on the “Go” sign was pretty damn impressive so hopefully points were allocated accordingly.

Being held at an aeronautic museum could only mean that there would be some cool old planes creating some entertainment and SO it was! A very cool old biplane joined in for some flyovers with smoke trails and all.

It certainly was an entertaining day for sure; trying to figure out if I should be pointing the camera up or down became a mission in itself! Way too much to capture all at once – a slice of heaven really!

This year’s NZHRA Street Rod Nationals are to be held in Rotorua in November so definitely get this event into your diary to get along to. It’s well worth the effort to check out these builds in person, plus see what else has come out of the caves ready for the weekend. I know it will be an impressive weekend again!

LISA SAWYER

A Girls

DREAM 30

It’s hard to believe we photographed this car a year ago, and what a whirlwind of a year Lisa has had with A Girl’s dream 30!

I’d be very surprised if you haven’t seen Lisa driving her coupe around the countryside clocking up heaps of miles. If you asked Lisa if this was her daily driver, she would almost have to say “yes”!

Despite all the cruising, the 30 still looks as sharp as the day she got fired up, which is no mean feat considering it’s a non fendered car open to everything being thrown at it!

The shelf in the cave which began displaying the trophies from various shows has since been added to a few times already and I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a few more shelves added to that wall this year too.

Beach Hop was a pretty big claim to fame for Lisa, winning top car outright on her first showing there.

Lisa’s dream to build a girl’s car, without going pink to say so, has certainly come together here! The clean lines of the 30 highlighted by the Debeer Xiralic White Crystal paint really does give it a classy look.

The old school whitewall tyres take it right back to the era and the four and half inch roof chop gives it that beautiful hot rod stance that makes it sit at home amongst any show car gathering.

Lisa’s originality in the interior and quiet detailing on the exterior with the clear crystal diamonds is what really gives this 30 its difference.

Her beautiful tribute to Marilyn Monroe with “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” flows right through from the engine detailing

through to the very classy white faux leather. Diamond buttoned seats and trims along with crystals on the switchgear and door openers giving a really classy look and a girl’s touch.

The boot hasn’t missed out on any treats either, with the side panels lined and buttoned to match the interior and a stunning Marilyn Monroe portrait airbrushed onto the retro chillybin by Dave McEwan completing the theme of the Model A Girls.

Up front the 350ci Chevy detailed in matching white and chrome sits proud and open in true old school hot rod fashion. Getting the wheels to spin is via an automatic trans and a good ole Ford nine inch diff.

It’s easy to see why this simple clean build wins so many trophies. The smiles it puts on people’s faces as soon as they see it is awesome! It is quietly showy but definitely

not in your face, giving its classiness space to shine amongst the others.

The 30 is a compact build and rides as you would expect in the old school days giving you the feeling of actually driving in an automobile that needs you to be in charge, which is all part of the fun of owning one of these cool machines!

Lisa’s dream of building a girl’s hot rod has certainly been fulfilled here. From a black steel body in a barn in the United States to a full rebuild in lil ole NZ here, Lisa would have certainly done Marilyn proud.

Q&A:

So how long have you owned the car ?

Aside from the time for the car to be built,we only just got her on the road early June (after lockdown),perfect timing for her 90th Birthday!

Where did you find it, import or around NZ?

The car was an original steel body barn find from the States, which Tony House imported back to NZ in 2017.

What made you pick this car ? I’ve always loved the early 30’s cars, and had to go for a Ford as unfortunately they didn’t make Chevys that early!

What would be your favourite car to have?

This is my ultimate and I was lucky enough to be able to get everything how I wanted throughout the build process.

What car would you like to test drive?

Oww that’s a hard one.. it would probably be something brand new... so either a Dodge Challenger or R35 GTR.

Any other cool cars in the shed?

My husband Keith currently has an electric blue 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster, which he rebuilt himself a few years ago, plus a Camaro.

What other cool cars have you owned?

We also used to have a 1937 Pontiac Silverstreak, which we stripped back to bare metal and pretty much rebuilt. And not many Hot Rodders would be interested in this, but we also had an R34 GTR Skyline and an R33 GTR.

Any you wish you still owned?

The Nissan Skyline R34 GTR, I really wish we never got rid of. It was electric blue and one of my all-time favourite cars to own and drive. And by now is worth well over twice the price we got for it... between $150,000-$180,000k.

What cars are on the wish list?

I am very happy with my new car and have no intention of getting rid of her for many years to come. If I was to choose another car, I would love a Dodge Challenger, but still keep my Hot Rod. My husband however, is currently looking at upgrading to a 1934 Tudor, which is his dream car.

Favourite style of car -. Coupe or wagon or? I definitely prefer coupes over the larger cars.

What do you love about the car scene the most?

I love everything about it, it’s great for the whole family, the socializing as everyone is so friendly and we all love dressing up in the Rock n’ Roll & Rockabilly theme for events.

Favourite car movie?

Disney ‘Cars’, lol... there’s so much detail and adult humour that relate to the Hot Rodding and Rock n’ Roll scene.

Whats on the stereo right now? I’m into all sorts of music, pretty much anything goes.

Favourite band / singer to go cruising with on the stereo?

It’s always fun to crank the older tunes while cruising, but having kids pretty much anything goes as we’re all rocking down.

Are you involved in any car clubs?

Yes, we’ve been in Bay Rodders – Tauranga for about 10 years now.

Did you buy the car as is or build it?

It’s been built a by an old childhood neighbour from Palmy, Tony House who now lives in Hamilton. His Dad Colin House (Chocolate) did all of the Panel beating. Was around a 2 ½ year build.

Anyone you would you like to thank for helping with the car? Asides for everyone I’ve mentioned above who contributed to the build, I would also like to thank my husband Keith Sawyer for making this possible and allowing me to follow my dreams. As well as the following friends who either contributed their time, products or services; Shane Andrews, John Ellis, Rhonda McNickle, Craig (Turtle) Jefferson, Ryan Flay and Shawn (Shirley) Fletcher.

I definitely wanted to create a girl’s car, without being pink! My favourite colour is red and it was very tempting to go Candy Apple Red, but there are so many cars out there like that. I wanted to be different and loved the look of Paul Teutul Senior’s Model A that Jesse James built, white with white wall tyres.

When I was playing around trying to choose a personalized plate ‘A GIRLS’ was available and everything just seemed to fall in place from there! My inspiration came from “Diamonds Are ‘A Girls’ Best Friend” sung by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ and the plate could also be used as ‘Model A Girls’.

I think the diamonds are well complimented with the white paintwork and upholstery and everything has just come together exactly as I envisaged it.
