Damen Stan Patrols 5509 for Guardia di Finanza Corp Latest model in successful series to make its first appearance in Italy for patrolling tasks in Mediterranean basin waters Together with its Italian partner yard Cantiere Navale Vittoria S.p.a., Damen Shipyards are building two Stan Patrols 5509 to the Italian Guardia di Finanza. This Italian law enforcement agency, deals with financial crime, smuggling Illigal Immigration and narco traffic and maintains a fleet of about 250 vessels.

The contract, resulting from a European tender, may be considered quite a unique event, says Frank de Lange, sales director North, West and South Europe at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. Guardia di Finanza, after a long and careful assessment, has chosen the proposal of the team Damen Shipyards/Cantiere navale Vittoria, Mr De Lange attributes the success to the proven design and guaranteed performance against a very competitive quotation.

Actually the 5509 is the latest model of a series Stan Patrols that remains highly in demand, and the largest to be built so far. The two vessels are built in Italy from a so called ‘Damen Technical Cooperation Package’, by using a pre-fabricated shipbuilding kit.

For this purpose Damen joins forces with the shipbuilding and -repair company “ Cantiere Navale Vittoria” in Adria. Vittoria has been

Showpieces The vessels will be put to use for continuous patrolling duties in the Italian territorial waters and in the entire mediterranean sea.

Speed and reliability are thus essential for carrying out the duties. One of the Stan Patrol’s main features is the unrivalled seakeeping behaviour, a technical feat stemming from intense research in cooperation with the Delft University of Technology. Its ‘Sea Axe’ bow form allows the vessel to reach and keep a speed up to 28 knots at a 90% MCR, even in heavy seas and strong winds.

Damen starts building 14 terminal tugs for Kuwait Oil Company A symbolic keel-laying ceremony on the 17th of April 2013 in Gorinchem, The Netherlands, officially launched the construction phase of 14 Damen ASD Tugs for Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). The series consist of two types, being 9 tugs of Damen’s recently launched 3212 model and 5 units of the well-known 2810 design, with 80 and 50 tons of bollard pull respectively.

At the festive launching ceremony Damen was very pleased to host a delegation of Kuwait Oil Company.

The two company-logos were welded together as a palpable symbol for the substantial project and the companies’ longstanding relation. The object will hold a place of honour in Damen’s Romania-based Galati shipyard during the construction period. All 14 units will be build there starting shortly, with deliveries scheduled from 2014 onwards.

Damen’s naval architects and designers in The Netherlands have tailored KOC’s exacting requirements on layout, systems and performances. Existing Damen designs have been masterfully combined with state-of-theart technology and dedicated

features. The new tugs will be assisting tankers at near-shore loading terminals and at single point moorings further offshore.

All ships will be equipped with a powerful fire fighting system for immediate and adequate action in case of emergency.

The cooperation between KOC and Damen dates back to the late 1980’s, when Damen delivered its first set of ships to KOC. In the 1990’s, Damen delivered a complete new fleet of tugs, crew tenders, work boats and mooring boats to KOC. This latest order, together with the on-going trust KOC puts in a wide range of Damen Services, emphasises the strong relationship of the companies.

Senergy and the University of Aberdeen launch world-leading MSc in Petrophysics and Formation Evaluation programme A pioneering collaboration aimed at inspiring the next generation of much-needed petrophysicists into the energy sector has been hailed by industry leaders as an “invaluable catalyst” towards helping to address the worldwide skills shortage in the oil and gas industry.

Global energy services company Senergy and the University of Aberdeen have joined forces to develop an MSc Petrophysics and Formation Evaluation programme in direct response to the growing demand for petrophysicists.

The programme is believed to be a world first because it is not only dedicated to the discipline of petrophysics but it is designed as a modular programme to allow a flexible approach for people wishing to combine studies with their work.

One of the key objectives in the design of the programme is to address the shortfall of “practitioners” in the industry, who can do the job as well as understand the science and the techniques.

Malcolm Webb, chief executive of Oil and Gas UK, who officially launched the course at the University of Aberdeen today (Tuesday, May 21), said: “Petrophysicists perform a crucial role in the oil and gas industry therefore it is essential that we continue to provide an entry route and indeed a development route for this vital aspect of our business.

DNV launches for Dynamic Po

Professor Sir Ian Diamond, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, said: “This is a great example of partnership in action which directly addresses the needs of industry by taking advantage of the University’s outstanding international reputation in geosciences. The MSc programme will significantly open up opportunities for people interested in becoming petrophysicists and developing their own careers, and will also appeal to companies wishing to develop further their talent pool.”

The Masters programme, which is due to begin in September, is open to graduates or equivalent with an existing position in the oil and gas industry who have backgrounds in, for example, geosciences, physical sciences, mathematics or engineering.

The modular programme, delivered by industry experts and which has two taught years and a project sees topics aimed at building knowledge and understanding introduced sequentially. This programme can be delivered anywhere in the world and attendance is required approximately four times per year, with each block lasting for one to two weeks. This approach is designed to provide maximum flexibility, allowing working individuals to continue their respective jobs whilst working towards a Masters degree from a leading University.

Senergy already delivers specialist training to companies around the world and will be marketing this new programme on a global basis.

DNV is launching a new training certification scheme for Dynamic Positioning Operatives to training providers in the UK. The new programme will be rolled out in Aberdeen and London on 21st May and 23rd May respectively and will provide a faster, and more tailored, course option in this field.

In order to develop and implement a new training system, a pilot project together with the Ship Modelling and Simulation Centre AS (SMSC) in Trondheim, Norway,

was established. As a result, a new standard, ‘Test Centre for Certification of Personnel’ has been developed. This new standard covers the area of obtaining a DNV approved DP Test Centre certificate that permits the approved centre to issue DPO certificates.

Investment marks long-term approach to CHC Helicopter, the world’s largest helicopter services company, has launched an advanced engineering apprenticeship scheme to foster the next generation of engineering talent.

CHC has joined forces with Resource Group’s Part 147 approved training organisation, LRTT, to develop the apprenticeship programme which will see 35 young people expected to join CHC’s UK and Dutch operations over the next five years, with many more anticipated in the future.

Delivered for CHC by Resource Group’s aviation maintenance training division LRTT, the apprentices will complete eight months of classroom training in Cirencester, England, and 16 months of practical experience at a CHC operation in Aberdeen or North Denes, or Den Helder in the Netherlands.

Harkand set to acquire Veolia Marine Services Acquisition will expand Harkand’s fleet and global reach with Gulf of Mexico presence, deepwater expertise and high quality assets

Harkand, the international subsea inspection, repair, maintenance and light construction group, today announced an agreement to acquire the main assets and business of Veolia Marine Services (“VMS”).

The acquisition will add 150 onshore and offshore staff, three dynamically-positioned multipurpose vessels (MSV), and six work-class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to Harkand’s growing workforce and fleet.

With Harkand already active in the North Sea, Asia Pacific and Africa, this acquisition will expand its international reach by adding a Houston operation with an established track-record in deepwater inspection, repair and maintenance in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tom Ehret, chairman of Harkand said: “Our long-term strategy is to establish Harkand as the leading global player wholly focused on inspection, repair, maintenance and light construction. This market is showing positive longterm growth prospects but lacks the presence of a true global specialist player, able to deliver consistent high quality services in every region. given by DNV, qualified candidates will be allowed to take the exams needed to obtain a DNV DPO certificate. Another new element that is introduced with the DNV DPO initiative is that both the training and the following exams are specialised toward functionality on the DP - fit for distinguishable groups of operations. Therefore, certificates issued will be valid only for the DP functionality covered by that particular course or exam. In addition, the DNV DPO initiative makes it possible to achieve a valid DPO certificate in significantly

shorter time than before, without compromising on quality.

Martin Crawford-Brunt, Manager for DNV classification in the UK and Ireland comments: “The scheme has been developed to satisfy the demand within the industry for alternatives to the existing regime.” He concludes: “While investigating the possibilities, DNV gained vital feedback so that we could develop a safe and relevant training experience for all prospective students.”

The apprenticeship is open to applicants aged between 16 and

24. Based on the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA) framework, successful apprentices will work towards a European Aviation Safety Agency approved qualification, as well as level 3 Diploma and a level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Aeronautical Engineering.

Seven places will be available every year. The deadline for applications is June 21st 2013 with the first intake of graduates in September 2013.

Harkand was launched in February 2013 through the merger of Iremis, Integrated Subsea Services (ISS) and Andrews Survey following investment by Oaktree Capital Management.

Employing over 750 people at bases in Aberdeen in the UK, Dubai in the Middle East and Singapore and Perth in Asia Pacific, the group aims to grow turnover to $1 billion in the next five years.

VMS has a successful trackrecord in subsea inspection, repair, maintenance and light construction with clients including BP, Chevron and Petrobras, and has worked on deepwater and ultra-deepwater projects including Cascade Chinook, as well as experience in decommissioning and light subsea construction support.

The company’s assets included in the transaction are the DP2 multipurpose support vessel Swordfish with a nine-man saturation diving system and two Triton XLS ROVs onboard; the DP3 multi-purpose support vessel Viking Poseidon, with two Triton XLS ROVs onboard; and the DP3 multipurpose support vessel Normand Pacific with two Triton XLS/XLX ROVs onboard.

The management teams of Harkand and VMS, supported

by Harkand shareholder Oaktree Capital Management, will work closely together on the business integration.

Chief executive officer of Harkand, Nicolas Mouté, added: “VMS brings significant benefits to Harkand including an experienced staff with a proven track-record including of deepwater projects, a fast-growing segment of the market, three formidable vessels, and six ROVs which will take our total ROV fleet to 35, following our recent $30million investment in six new vehicles. We are very excited by this transaction which will enable us to offer our clients a wider range of services anywhere in the world.”

The transaction is subject to certain standard regulatory conditions including authorisation of the transaction by the US anti-trust authorities. The deal is expected to complete in June 2013.

Sail krikt imago regio NHN op Je komt bijna nergens een evenement als Sail tegen behalve in grote havens als Amsterdam, Londen, New York. Dat het in een relatief kleine haven als Den Helder mogelijk is, benadrukt de unieke situatie in deze regio. Een regio die economisch flink te lijden heeft (gehad) onder recessies en daarmee gepaard gaande bezuinigingen. Want ook instituties als de Koninklijke Marine en de visserij zijn sterk afgeslankt de laatste jaren.

Dat heeft de regio geen goed gedaan en dus moet die regio haar sterke kanten presenteren. Sail Den Helder 2013 is daar een unieke gelegenheid voor.

“Je organiseert zo’n evenement omdat je daarmee een boodschap wilt afgeven”, zegt Sail-voorzitter Cees van Duyvendijk. “Je wilt de hele wereld – en dat gebeurt inderdaad op deze manier als je ziet waar al die Tall Ships vandaan komen – laten zien waar een regio als de Kop van Noord-Holland met Den Helder als centraal punt, toe in staat is”.

Van Duyvendijk wil dat ‘de wereld’ Den Helder herkent en erkent als de belangrijkste offshore-haven aan de Noordzee en dat ook de aanwezigheid van de Koninklijke Marine er toe leidt dat er in de regio een schat aan maritieme middelen, kennis en expertise aanwezig is. Die heel breed kan worden uitgedragen, omdat niet alleen de onderwijsinstellingen (van zowel de Marine als van de civiele maritieme instituten) er gebruik van kunnen maken,

maar ook het lokaal gevestigde bedrijfsleven. “De Maritieme Campus Nederland bijvoorbeeld draagt inmiddels heel duidelijk haar steentje bij aan verdere ontwikkeling binnen het maritiem georiënteerde bedrijfsleven, onderwijs en kennisinfrastructuur en fungeert zo als een soort marktplaats tussen partijen”, weet Van Duyvendijk. Maar ook kennisinstituten als Imares, TNO, het NIOZ, ATO, het KIM en het ECN hebben veel contacten met het bedrijfsleven in en rond Den Helder. “De regio heeft een geweldige potentie op maritiem gebied, zowel economisch als qua kennis en onderwijs en zit in een ideale positie voor het initiëren van innovatieve activiteiten”, aldus de Sail-voorzitter.

Op de promotietoer Van Duyvendijk stelt dat er nog veel te weinig gebruik

wordt gemaakt van het enorme kennispotentieel waar het bedrijven en instellingen betreft die buiten deze regio gevestigd zijn.

“Er zijn ongetwijfeld veel meer maritiem georiënteerde bedrijven in andere delen van het land die hiermee hun voordeel kunnen doen. Zij kunnen via de Helderse bedrijven en instituten kennis opdoen om er hun eigen activiteiten mee uit te breiden of te verdiepen.

Of zij kunnen tot de conclusie komen dat het zinvol is om met de hier gevestigde bedrijven en dergelijke te gaan samenwerken.

Sterker nog, misschien besluiten ze wel om zich ook hier te vestigen. Wat heel goed mogelijk is, want er is nog ruimte genoeg voor bedrijfsvestigingen”.

De Sail-voorzitter is duidelijk op de promotietoer. “Dat is ook precies de bedoeling van de initiators van Sail 2013”, geeft hij aan.

“De kopgemeenten Den Helder, Schagen, Hollands Kroon, Texel en de provincie Noord-Holland willen graag het grote publiek laten kennismaken met de unieke mogelijkheden van de regio. En dat kun je dus heel goed doen met zo’n publiekstrekker als Sail”.

Het gaat Van Duyvendijk er vooral om aan de buitenwereld te laten zien welke enorme potentie de Kop heeft op economisch gebied.

Maar dit maritiem spektakel moet

natuurlijk ook een geweldig feest worden voor de bevolking. En voor de toeristen en alle andere belangstellenden die speciaal voor Sail naar Den Helder komen.

De regio en haar bevolking zullen maritieme trots uitstralen met een geweldige gecombineerde Sail en Marinedagen. Een geweldig feest.

Een fantastische coproductie tussen Sail en de jarige Koninklijke Marine.

525 jaar KM Het is ‘pas’ tweehonderd jaar geleden dat de Marine het predikaat ‘Koninklijk’ verwierf.

Als institutie is de zeemacht dus veel ouder. “In de jaren dat de Lage Landen langzaam maar zeker handel overzee begonnen te drijven, moesten alle betrokken steden en provincies zelf in de beveiliging van hun handelsvloten voorzien”, weet de Sail-voorzitter.

Dat bleek uiteindelijk zo’n rommeltje te worden dat de toenmalige vorst, Keizer Maximilliaan de Tweede van Oostenrijk (die ook heerste over een gebied dat je kunt vergelijken met de huidige Benelux) aan de Heeren van Veere – destijds één van de belangrijkste steden in de Lage Landen – opdracht gaf een organisatie voor een Admiraliteit op te stellen. Een overkoepelende admiraliteit wel te verstaan, want er waren al eerder admiraals door de diverse lokale gezaghebbenden

aangesteld. Maar op 8 januari 1488 werd de Ordonnantie op de Admiraliteit van kracht en sindsdien kun je spreken over een door de overheid georganiseerde zeemacht.

Later zou één van de belangrijkste admiraals (Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter) zijn bewapende zeesoldaten omvormen tot het Korps Mariniers, die trouwens een geweldige reputatie zouden opbouwen. Bekend is bijvoorbeeld een uitspraak van een Engels historicus naar aanleiding van het gedrag van zowel het vlootpersoneel als de mariniers tijdens de beroemde Tocht naar Chatham.

“De Nederlandse marinemensen hebben zich voorbeeldig en gedisciplineerd gedragen tegenover de burgerbevolking, waar toch kort daarvoor Engelse landingstroepen op schandalige wijze hadden huisgehouden op Terschelling” (Samuel Pepys Diary Entries for 10 - 30 June 1667, Griffier van de Navy Board).

Dank je wel, Offshore Den Helder!

Wanneer de Tall Ships langs de Nieuwediepkade in Den Helder afgemeerd liggen, hebben de bevoorradingsbedrijven van de offshore gedurende vier dagen geen diepstekende kaderuimte meer beschikbaar.

Wie langs de Paleiskade kan afmeren, wordt wel geholpen. Maar anders betekent dit doorvaren naar IJmuiden en extra vrachtwagenritten tussen de depots in Den Helder en de schepen in het Noordzeekanaalgebied uitvoeren.

Voorzitter Cees Van Duyvendijk van Sail Den Helder 2013 is zich zeer wel bewust van de problemen die het grote evenement veroorzaakt voor één van de economische levensaders van Den Helder. Maar hij weet ook dat er geen andere oplossing is. En dat er aan deze medaille zoals altijd twee kanten zitten. Want terwijl de bevoorrading voor extra kosten komt te staan, kan ze tegelijkertijd ‘meesnoepen’ van de brede golf aan publiciteit.

Daarnaast weet de voorzitter heel goed dat zijn organisatie zonder deze ‘steun’ van de offshorebedrijven een serieus kaderuimte probleem zou hebben.

“Het is haast een vorm van indirecte sponsoring te noemen”, meent vice-admiraal (bd) Van Duyvendijk. Hij realiseert zich immers heel goed dat de extra kosten die de offshorebedrijven

gedurende de vier dagen in juni moeten maken om hun zaken draaiende te houden, tegelijkertijd steun voor hem betekenen.

“Wij beroven hen toch maar van de beste ligplaatsen op de beste routes van en naar de productieen boorplatforms”, zegt hij.

Sponsors Sail Den Helder 2013 wordt uiteraard ook direct gesponsored door een aantal grote bedrijven en instellingen. GdF Suez is een van de hoofdsponsors. “Daarnaast zijn ook de Woningstichting Den Helder, de Rabobank Noordholland Noord en een combinatie Damen Shipyards, Thales Nederland en Imtech hoofdsponsors”, vertelt de voorzitter.

De overkoepelende internationale offshore-organisatie Nogepa is ook sponsor naast de gemeenten Den Helder, Texel, Schagen en Hollands Kroon.

En niet te vergeten de provincie Noord-Holland.

“Je merkt dus wel dat de maritieme sector en de lokale Helderse gemeenschap, de regio en de provincie het evenement een warm hart toedragen”, stelt de voorzitter. En doordat ook de offshoresector ‘zijn’ organisatie op zo’n doeltreffende manier ondersteunt, maakt hij zich geen zorgen over het welslagen van het vier dagen durende festijn.

Presentatie Van Duyvendijk hoopt dat de offshoresector de vier dagen aangrijpt om ook hun bedrijven aan het grote publiek te tonen.

Per slot van zake komen er grote moderne schepen in de Helderse haven (die deze dagen dus aan de Paleiskade afmeren) en wellicht kunnen de bedrijven – Peterson SBS, MiSWACO, Den Helder Support Service, etc. – via opvallende informatieborden langs de hekken van de Paleiskade het langswandelend publiek wat vertellen over hun activiteiten....

De voorzitter van Sail Den Helder 2013 weet immers ook dat de beveiligingsregels voor de offshorehaven het moeilijk maken deze operationele kades open te stellen voor het publiek. Maar toch kan men op die manier tipjes van de sluier oplichten!

Multimetaal veelvuldig gecertificeerd Bij het Helderse metaalverwerkende bedrijf Multimetaal heerst sinds begin dit jaar een voldaan gevoel over de kwaliteitsaspecten. Werkt het bedrijf al 40 jaar volgens de criteria van de diverse normen en standaarden, de afgelopen maanden hebben kwaliteitszorginspecteurs van certificerende instellingen het bedrijf aan audits onderworpen om dit nu te bekrachtigen met een certificaattoekenning!

Commercieel directeur Arthur Hulsebos wijst er op dat kwaliteit al die jaren zeer hoog in het vaandel stond, omdat de klanten – met name in de offshore – hoge kwaliteitseisen stellen. “We werkten altijd al volgens de criteria van bijvoorbeeld ISO 9001 en NEN-EN-ISO 3834”, zegt hij. Maar doordat er steeds vaker gevraagd werd naar een certificaat, heeft Multimetaal zich laten ‘doorlichten’ op onder andere de kwaliteitseisen voor het lassen conform NENEN-ISO 3834. Dit internationaal erkende kwaliteitssysteem geeft afnemers de zekerheid dat de las goed is, doordat deze destructief is onderzocht volgens de normen en voorwaarden van dit kwaliteitssysteem.

Het NEN zegt over deze kwaliteitsnorm dat ‘het gebruikelijk is om ISO 9001 gecertificeerde bedrijven in te zetten voor het vervaardigen van producten, maar dat dit certificaat niets zegt over de kwaliteit van lassen. Dit is dan ook de reden dat afnemers van lastechnische producten de ISO 3834 certificering voorschrijven’.

Een bedrijf dat ISO 3834 gecertificeerd is, opereert als lastechnisch bedrijf duidelijk op een hoger niveau. Door het volgen van de juiste stappen voor, tijdens en na het productieproces wordt een product verkregen met de juiste kwaliteit, aldus

NEN. Deze normeringsautoriteit onderscheidt drie niveaus van certificering, te weten ISO 38342 (uitgebreide kwaliteitseisen; bedrijf staat hiermee aan de top van de lastechnische industrie); ISO 3834-3 (standaard kwaliteitseisen; bedrijf toont aan te voldoen aan de lastechnische eisen) en ISO 3834-4 (elementaire kwaliteitseisen; bedrijf beheerst de basisvoorwaarden van de lastechniek). Volgens de certificerende autoriteit valt Multimetaal onder ISO 3834-2 en is het een bedrijf, dat werkt vanuit vastgestelde kwaliteitsprocedures.

Oftewel, vanaf orderintake tot aan aflevering worden alle stappen volgens kwaliteitsprocedures uitgevoerd. “Deze zogeheten total tracebility’ hebben we dus altijd al toegepast, maar het is nu formeel vastgelegd”, aldus Hulsebos.

Nog twee certificaten Daarmee was de koek voor Multimetaal nog niet op. Want na de certificering volgens ISO 3834 en het daaruit voortvloeiende strenge toezicht van de geaccrediteerde onafhankelijke derde keuringsinstantie (die dus regelmatig audits blijft doen om te controleren of aan alle eisen voldaan blijft worden), werd een audit gedaan voor de norm NEN-EN-ISO 9001:2008+C1:2009 NL. Deze internationale norm

specificeert eisen voor een kwaliteitsmanagementsysteem wanneer een organisatie moet aantonen dat zij in staat is om op consistente wijze producten te leveren die voldoen aan de eisen van de klant en aan de van toepassing zijnde weten regelgeving. Pus dat het bedrijf zich ten doel stelt om de klanttevredenheid te verhogen door het systeem doeltreffend toe te passen. Met inbegrip van processen voor continue verbetering van het systeem alsmede de borging van het voldoen aan eisen van klanten en die van toepassing zijnde wet- en regelgeving. Ook hier werd dus aan Multimetaal het desbetreffende certificaat uitgereikt. De derde certificering betreft de NEN-EN 1090 inzake het vervaardigen van staal- en aluminiumconstructies. Deze norm bestaat uit twee delen (eisen voor het vaststellen van de conformiteit van constructieve onderdelen en technische eisen voor staalconstructies) en Multimetaal heeft aan beide eisen voldaan.

Omdat Multimetaal ook actief is op het gebied van het vervaardigen van drukvaten en bijbehorende appendages, is door Lloyd’s Register op 24 mei 2013 aan Hulsebos de Declaration of Supervision uitgereikt inzake het kwaliteitshandboek voor het reviseren van PSV volgens het RotD normblad T0103-94.12. Deze Regeling Toepassing op Drukvaten ‘kijkt’ ook naar lastechnische aspecten en dat is iets waar Multimetaal in gespecialiseerd is.

Hulsebos laat ten slotte weten te verwachten dat in de tweede helft van dit jaar ook het reeds toegekende VCA-certificaat weer zal worden geactualiseerd.

Intertek opens new energy exploration Aggreko UK Recognised and production centre in Malaysia

by Key Environmental and Health and Safety Bodies Intertek, the leading global quality solutions provider, has invested £900,000 (4,143,720 Malaysian Ringgit) in a new Malaysian regional centre which will bring enhanced services to the exploration and production (E&P) sector in the region.

Based in Kuala Lumpur, the facility boasts two laboratories and will allow Intertek to significantly expand its locally delivered services for its existing E&P business in the region. It will be also be a focal point for the provision of local expertise through consultancy, technical support and testing services for the South East Asia region.

The office has capacity for 30 people and recruitment plans are underway to increase the workforce by a third.

The three-floor, 10,000 sq foot facility which has been operational since November 2012 and was officially opened yesterday is furnished with the latest technology and equipment.

It will include two laboratories, one specifically for oil and gas analysis and the other to provide production chemistry, microbiology and corrosion testing services to South East Asia; a new offering from Intertek in the region.

The office will also host training courses in its purpose built meeting and conference room.

business in the region over the past two years through a number of significant contract wins, particularly in production chemistry, corrosion and chemical testing. To date, these projects have been delivered from our production & integrity assurance centres of excellence in the UK. Technology transfer to the new facility will significantly enhance the delivery of local services but with continued access to our international experts.

Tom Whitfield, manager of E&P for South East Asia at Intertek, and Douglas Bennet, manager of microbiology for South East Asia at Intertek, have relocated from the UK to Kuala Lumpur.

Aggreko, the world leader in the provision of temporary power and temperature control services has had its UK operations certified as ‘world class’ through the ISO accredited CEMARS standard through the Achilles carbon Reduction programme.

In addition, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has recognised the commitment of Aggreko UK to attaining the highest health and safety by presenting it with a Gold award at the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards 2013.

The CEMARS certification demonstrates Aggreko’s efforts in actively measuring its operational carbon footprint and taking active and tangible steps to reduce this at every opportunity possible.

This includes initiatives to limit electricity consumption at Aggreko offices and sites across the UK, implementing a green travel policy and phasing-in a vehicle fleet with substantially improved fuel consumption. Scrabster supply base moves to next phase NorSea Group, leading supplier of base services and integrated logistics systems to the Norwegian oil and gas industry, has followed last month’s announcement that it is to develop a supply base at Scrabster Harbour, by signing its first strategic working partnership with local logistics firm Hugh Simpson (Contractors) Ltd. The exclusive agreement will see NorSea Group bring its years of experience, successful track record and resources to the longestablished local family firm to see them work together to develop the business by building on Simpson’s existing expertise to meet the future demands of the energy industry in Scotland.

Established in 1964, the company provides a total range of logistics services to the marine and offshore industries. It has two sister companies which provide fuel and oil supply and shipping agency services in the region.

The supply base at Scrabster is NorSea Group’s first in Scotland and will operate as a onestop supply base serving the oil and gas, decommissioning and renewables industries.

Its geographical location as Scotland’s most northerly mainland port means it will be of particular economic benefit to operators in the northern North Sea and West of Shetland offshore developments by cutting down on transit time to the nearest mainland port and by its ability to provide a fast “burn and turn” turnaround.

NorSea Group already operates nine supply bases along the coast of Norway which provide logistics support to companies operating offshore on the Norwegian continental shelf.

Knut Magne Johannessen, Director International & Project Operations, said the partnership with Simpsons was a significant step forward in the plans for the Scrabster base.

“This is a perfect fit for us,” he said. “We are very keen that the development at Scrabster brings benefits to the local community and so we are delighted that we have been able to sign this agreement with such a wellestablished and highly respected homegrown company which has the local knowledge and expertise to help move the plans for the supply base forward.

“The services which Simpsons already provide dovetail neatly into the requirements for a one-stop supply base but there are many other benefits. For example it has had considerable involvement in wind farms in Caithness and also

in Orkney and Aberdeen and we see the growth of renewables as a key element in the UK’s future energy mix. Of particular importance to us was the company’s excellent safety record as NorSea Group considers a high standard of HSEQ credentials are absolutely paramount.”

Director Hugh Simpson said the agreement laid positive foundations for company growth.

GDF SUEZ E&P UK awards Bifab for the construction of the Cygnus Quarters & Utilities platform, in presence of the Secretary of State in Aberdeen The Rt Hon Edward Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, joined GDF SUEZ E&P UK in Aberdeen yesterday to witness the signing of another major contract with the UK supply chain for the Cygnus project. The deal with Burntisland Fabrication Ltd (BiFab) to construct the accommodation platform of the GDF SUEZ operated Cygnus development is one of several partnerships helping to deliver more investment and new jobs for UK companies.

Having signed the Field Development Plan when the Cygnus Project was sanctioned in August 2012, the Secretary of State oversaw the formal award of the contract for the construction of the Quarters and Utilities platform (QU) to Fife based BiFab. The contract covers the fabrication and construction services for the platform, including the design, procurement, pre-commissioning assistance, weighing and loadout. The project schedule sees mechanical completion by Q4 2014 and onshore commissioning complete by Q1 2015, with construction manpower on the QU estimated to peak at 320, including subcontractors.

Edward Davey MP, UK Secretary of State, said: “Cygnus is one of the most important projects currently being undertaken in the Southern North Sea and clearly demonstrates the ability of the UK supply chain to complete on the global stage. GDF SUEZ and the Cygnus partnership are demonstrating the great potential that still exists in UK waters for the oil and gas industry and the Government remains committed to providing the right investment environment for future projects.”

Overall, the Cygnus partnership is investing £1.4 billion (GBP) in the development of the Cygnus field and is creating 4,000 direct and indirect jobs across the UK during the construction phase.

Due to be operational by the end of 2015 and led by operator GDF SUEZ E&P UK (38.75%) with partners Centrica (48.75%) and Bayerngas (12.5%), the Cygnus field is the largest discovery in the Southern North Sea in 25 years.

Peak gas production from 2016 is expected to account for 5% of UK domestic gas production, meeting the demand of almost 1.5 million homes in the country.
