THE MACLEAN ELECTRICAL GROUP USA, UK AND AUSTRALIA SECURES KEY CONTRACTS Global strength of Houston TX, Scotland and Perth WA bases combine to seal the deals Following awards to supply electrical cables for the Chevron Gorgon LNG project and other LNG developments in the region, the MacLean Electrical Group, through its wholly owned Australian business JT Day Pty Ltd, has secured two frame agreement awards from Bechtel for the Chevron operated Wheatstone Project. Wheatstone is one of Australia’s largest resource projects and involves the construction of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains and a domestic gas plant 12 km west of Onslow on the Pilbara coast. Gas will be transported via a pipeline from an offshore processing platform 225 km
off the coast to the onshore facilities. First LNG shipments are planned for 2016
personnel in Houston Texas, the UK and Perth Western Australia.”
The contracts were secured following significant involvement and close cooperation between the MacLean Electrical Group's Houston, UK and Australian business units, with much of the initial negotiation being undertaken in Houston.
Continuing business success has resulted in the group's further investment in Australia, and in January 2012 JT Day moved into new, purpose built premises in Perth, providing greatly enhanced facilities for the further growth of the business.
The awards are for the early works element of the project, one providing cables and cable glands, the other electrical bulk materials which includes lighting, cable supports, junction boxes, control stations and a wide range of other products. MacLean Electrical managing director Donald MacLean said: “Although the project is based in Australia, the securing of the contracts was down to the effective collaboration of our
“Other offices in Brisbane QLD and Melbourne VIC are supporting the many developments on the east coast and further expansion is planned to not only position the business to win further project work but also support the longterm operational phase of the numerous energy and resource projects currently underway in Australia,” said Mr MacLean.
Siemens to supply power solutions for drilling units Siemens has received an order for the supply of two complete power packages for Statoil’s two new semisubmersible drilling units – Cat D. Purchaser is Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd (DSME), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. The end customer is Songa Rig AS, the Norwegian branch of the drilling contractor Songa Offshore SE. The rigs will start their assignments for the operator Statoil in mid-water operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in 2014. These new drilling units for Songa Rig are specially designed for Statoil for production and development drilling in fields with water depths between 100 and 500 meters, and are capable of drilling to depths of 8500 meters below the sea floor. The Siemens scope of supply for these semisubmersible units consists of
electric generators, medium- and low-voltage switchgear and MCC (motor control center), distribution transformers as well as complete drilling drive line-up with cooling and braking resistor skids, thruster drives and motors and uninterruptible power systems. The system will be designed according to the latest rules and
regulations for operating on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. “Siemens was involved in the early stage design of the Cat D. drilling units. As a result of this involvement, we’ve been able to meet the stringent requirements and supply a complete integrated solution for these mobile offshore drilling units,” said Adil Toubia, CEO of the Oil & Gas Division of Siemens Energy. “We’re providing a uniform, seamless solution for our customer. This will enable the units to operate smoothly and achieve high operational efficiency, reliability while maximizing the operational uptime.” Siemens also received orders for power solutions with a similar scope for a total of six drilling ships from DSME in the spring of 2011.

"Ship of the Year 2012" Full Speed Ahead with VSP The offshore supply vessel North Sea Giant was given the Offshore Support Journal "Ship of the Year 2012" award. The vessel of Norwegian operator North Sea Shipping AS received this prestigious prize during the Offshore Support Vessel Conference in London. North Sea Giant is one of the largest and most powerful offshore supply vessels equipped with Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) as the main propulsion system. Offshore construction vessels (OCV) are multi-purpose vessels, used particularly by the oil and gas industry. They are at home on all oceans of the world. The North Sea Giant is 161 meters long, 30 meters wide and fully equipped for long-term operation at sea. With her two cranes, she is one of the biggest and most advanced vessels of this type ever built. The giant vessel is driven by five Voith Schneider Propellers. In high seas, the extremely fast and precise propeller control system allows the North Sea Giant to be kept safely and accurately on position. This is ensured by the dynamic positioning system (DP3), which uses the VSP thrust forces, as well as by the Voith Roll Stabilization (VRS). The propellers ensure precise control, a high degree of propulsion efficiency
and low fuel consumption, even in adverse weather and current conditions. The robustness and reliability which result in minimum downtimes and extremely low service costs are further advantages. These characteristics are required for applications such as the installation of ever bigger platforms, working in depths of up to 3 000 meters, for the construction of extraction units as well as for pipe laying, cable laying or for the installation of tidal current turbines. North Sea Giant has been in service since June 2011. She has a load carrying capacity of 14 200 tons and can accommodate up to 199 crew members. North Sea Giant is the largest and most powerful vessel using Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) as the main propulsion system.

First Damen Fast Crew Supplier built in Ecuador For the first time, a Damen Fast Crew Supplier 1605 will be built in Ecuador by Astilleros Navales Ecuatorianos (ASTINAVE) Shipyard. Damen is supplying the complete, prefabricated Shipbuilding Material Package Kit to ASTINAVE. The yard’s technical staff are responsible for the construction, together with Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC). The DTC concept enables customers to build Damen vessels of their choice locally, according to specific requirements. The Fast Crew Supplier will be delivered to PetroEcuador in September this year. “Damen will do everything in its power to ensure that ASTINAVE can accomplish this tight deadline,” says Ezequiel Najmias, Damen Sales Manager Americas. Negotiations with ASTINAVE are already going on for the possibility of more Fast Crew Suppliers and other vessels. State-owned oil company PetroEcuador is the end user of the new Fast Crew Supplier, which will be deployed to transport executives to oilfields.
Passenger comfort Damen engineers have been heavily involved in the design process because the vessel will not be a standard vessel. Usually, the Damen Fast Crew Supplier 1605 transports 29 passengers, but this vessel is being designed for only 19. As well as being more luxurious and spacious for high levels of passenger comfort, the vessel is also being adapted for a 3 m access system to transfer passengers to the rigs. Partner yards ASTINAVE and Damen have a
long-established relationship, with the Ecuadorian yard having built several Cutter Suction Dredgers and Stan Patrols over the years. This latest order followed one in September 2011 for a Stan Patrol 2606. ASTINAVE employees also attend training courses at Damen Shipyards’ headquarters in the Netherlands.
Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC) DTC supplies the complete prefabricated shipbuilding kit, including the steel or aluminium. This cost-efficient concept enables customers to build the Damen vessel of their choice locally, according to their personal requirements. Advantages are clear: local economy profits and costs of
transportation are cut down, which substantially reduces the environmental impact. Damen also supervises the build if required. Damen Shipyards Group Damen Shipyards Group (est. 1927) is a globally operating company with more than 35 owned shipyards and numerous partner yards. Damen employs over 6,000 people, has built over 5,000 vessels worldwide and delivers up to 150 vessels annually. Based on its unique, standardised ship-design concept and short delivery times, Damen is able to guarantee constant quality. Damen’s focus on standardization and a modular construction approach lead toshort delivery
times (Damen keeps vessels in stock), low ‘total cost of ownership’, high resale value, proven technologyand reliable performance. Damen offers a wide range of products, including: tugs, workboats, patrol vessels, high-speed craft, cargo vessels, dredgers, offshore support vessels, oilspill response vessels and even frigates and mega yachts. In addition to shipbuilding, Damen offers efficient customer support, customer financing and complete lifecycle service. Even though we are a major international group, we are still a family-owned company with a deep respect for our maritime heritage.
BP to pose choices for the digital oilfield at spe intelligent energy 2012 BP will share a review of its innovative Field of the Future programme and pose choices for the next phase in the establishment of the digital oilfield at SPE Intelligent Energy 2012 in Utrecht, Holland from March 27-29. Under the theme empowered by realtime, BP will draw on its experiences from its Field of the Future programme to discuss the choices, changes and challenges faced by the industry. It is now 10 years since the Field of the Future concept was established in BP. By seeking to improve decision-
making through realtime data-to-decision capabilities in production, operations and reservoir management, BP has faced and overcome many challenges since the Field of the Future initiative was launched. At the end of 2011, production increase resulting from the application of proprietary Field of the Future solutions was assessed as 73,000 barrels of BP net oil equivalent a day two years ahead of the plan set internally to reach a target of 100,000 barrels a day by 2017. The programme provides a suite of technology-based solutions focused on making better decisions faster and has proved to be a significant success with key benefits including: creating effective organizational
engagement delivering sustainability by changing working practices developing productized solutions and standards to create an offer aligned with and owned by its functional organisation driving demonstrable value delivery BP has identified that typically within the industry the development of digital oilfield programmes appears to follow five-year phases. By describing the characteristics of these phases, as well as its own experience of the journey through them, BP will share some interesting and important lessons for achieving value delivery from digital oilfield investment.
Steve Roberts, Vice President of the Field of the Future Technology Flagship at BP, said: “The Field of the Future programme is now an integral element of the company’s approach to delivering major projects and operating fields and this is also becoming recognised by the industry as a whole. There have been a number of benefits as a result and IE12 will enable us to share these experiences and recent developments.” Looking forward, BP believes the industry must make some important choices about how to best progress the digital oilfield concept. At Intelligent Energy 2012, BP will present a view of the options available, and the background to its own choices.
Mr Roberts, continued: “We believe digital oilfields have started to become a key component of how the industry operates, but there are still more opportunities ahead. We are dedicated to the ongoing development of systems and interfaces that the engineers of the future will want to use. Through focusing on a systems approach enabled by the latest technology developments, and empowered by realtime information, BP aims to create a programme that addresses business and operational challenges yet to be faced.” To find out more about the BP Field of the Future programme, please visit stand B50 at Intelligent Energy 2012 or visit www.bp.com/fieldofthefuture.

IQ Laboratory enjoys international confidence with ISO 17025 accreditation Friday January 27th 2012 Rakesh Autar and Lucien Helstone of IQ Laboratory celebrated reaching an impressive milestone. One month before the third anniversary of IQ Lab they received the official ISO 17025 accreditation on behalf of the Board of Accreditation. This international certification guarantees the quality and reliability of both the management and technical competence of the laboratory. Thus IQ Laboratory is the third laboratory in the Netherlands that has obtained this prestigious qualification. The ‘business statement’, as both founders formulated in 2009, can already be adjusted: the first major objective is achieved. “The ‘scope’, the research area that is subject to the accreditation, covers two main fields: the investigation of contamination by mineral oils in process- and waste water with ships and offshore platforms, and the detection and quantification of Legionella bacteria in water. In both cases the offshore is an important client, mainly because of the wastewater research. On several continuous processes on production platforms and ships, water is a byproduct. That water can be discharged, but only when proven that there are little or no mineral oils remaining. Platforms and ships therefore have the duty to continuously test the quality of this process water according to OSPAR-standards. The owner of the platform has a strong interest that the processes do not come to a standstill, so one wants to have reliable test results as fast as possible. Therein lies our great advantage: we are 24/7 in action, we are close, easily reachable and we can guarantee the outcome within 24 hours. In some cases we can even bring the results to the client within 8 hours.” “The samples of the platforms are usually brought to land by helicopter: from airport De Kooy they are with us within 5 minutes. We always have someone on standby to take the tests directly and put the results in our client system online as soon as possible. All customers have online access to their own data and measurement results. If the customer is waiting for it or if we find too high values, we always have direct telephone contact with the customer so they can immediately take action.”
iQ-Laboratory
“From offshore ships, both drinking water and the rainwater are very regularly tested. Rainwater that falls on the deck cannot just rinse into the sea, because of possible contamination with substances that are on board. The ships catch it in large tanks and have to get it tested it almost every
day to be allowed to discharge it. And why the quality of drinking water is very important does not need any explanation I think... Also here is a great advantage that we are on the spot. Our office is located at the port of Den Helder, sometimes it is just a matter of crossing the road to bring the samples. The personal contact that emerges seems to us as a big advantage.
5 minutes and thereby a good indication whether the process can be proceeded. The official measurement still has to be completed on land, but this way a platform or ship can intervene itself when they observe that the measurements goes beyond certain values. And since this accreditation it went even quicker, the number of samples has more than doubled in a month.” Legionella The other field that is subject to the scope is the detection and quantification of Legionella bacteria in water. Also here the offshore provisionally is the largest client. But if the IQ Laboratory could help it, there is quite some evangelization to perform onshore: many institutions are still not sufficiently aware of the duty that they legally have towards the users of their facilities. “All institutions where water is made available to third parties, whether this is drinking water or rinsing water, are covered by the drinking water standards. This implies that they have the duty, provably, to do everything to make sure that
the piping conforms the quality requirements. Gyms, retirement homes, hotels, campsites, schools and saunas all should all run a risk analysis and thereon write a management plan. We observed that this awareness has not penetrated everywhere. The last weeks we are in consultation with various institutions on the composing of a Legionella management plan. We do this together with a BRL 6010 certified company. They make a Legionella risk inventarisation, and draw up a maintenance and management plan. The institutions are going to perform those plans themselves, and IQ Lab runs the periodic checks. Thus we provide a clear guide and we will take on most of the tasks. The daily maintenance is of course for the expense of the institution itself. This way the institution can show that they have done every possible thing to absolutely minimize the risk of a possible Legionella outbreak.” The number of applications increases on both areas. Only IQ Laboratory raises the bar a little higher each time. The achieved objective of ISO 17025 can be replaced by a new challenge in the business statement.
From the establishment of IQ Lab it was our goal to become the laboratory where the entire offshore can go to for all researches, and on such an easily accessible way that they feel like it is their own lab. By connecting a face to the name that sense of collegiality can be created. The rapidity of the establishment and the increase of our clientele proves we are on the right track. iQ-FTIR: Self research To meet the ships and platforms in their need to actually be constantly aware of the quality of the process water, IQ Lab has designed IQ-FTIR. This device, in contrast to the laboratory on land used FTIR, does not work with toxic solvents and thus may be used offshore. The IQ-FTIR gives a fairly accurate result of the amount of mineral oils in the water to be discharged within

“The improvement and expansion of our quality system belongs to our mission. Therefore, for this year we have the objective to let more analyzes belong within the scope of this certification. In dialogue with our clients, we will find out what analyzes are needed. We currently think of the Ecoli bacteria, or COD, chemical oxygen demand. We want to expand our service so that IQ Lab eventually will be known by everyone, on and offshore, as the key lab!”

Wintershall starts production in K18-Golf field Use of latest tight gas technology enables maximum production efficiency Kassel / Rijswijk. Germany’s largest internationally active oil and gas producer, Wintershall, is continuing to step up its activities in the southern North Sea and is now launching natural gas production from the K18-Golf field in the Dutch North Sea. By carefully designing the well and deploying a new down hole completion technology, Wintershall managed to set new standards in field development and cost-efficiency for tight gas reservoirs offshore. Wintershall initially plans to produce around 1.0 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from the tight gas deposit via a subsea well (subsea comple-tion). A second production well next summer is set to maintain plat-eau between 1.0 and 1.4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. With the production of the field around 250,000 households can be supplied with gas. “Our investment in the K18-Golf tight gas project once again proves that we still see substantial potential in the Dutch North Sea and plan to tap into this potential,” Martin Bachmann, Member of the
Winter-shall Board of Executive Directors with responsibility for Exploration and Production, explains. One of the challenges in developing the K18-Golf field is its location in a restricted military zone. For this rea-son the field had to be developed subsea and within a very short time window. This is also why the production site was connected via a sea bottom pipeline to the platform K15-FA ten kilometers further north. The gas will be treated there to sales specification before be-ing sent to Den Helder on the Dutch mainland via the Wintershall-operated WGT pipeline network. The K18-G1 well goes down vertically for approximately 3750 me-ters and then has a horizontal section in the gas bearing sand of about 1400 meters. “We are proud of what we have achieved in de-veloping this first tight gas field by Wintershall in the Dutch North Sea,” Gilbert Van den Brink, Managing Director of Wintershall Noordzee, explains. “The K18-G1 well showed a better reservoir than predicted, and we have high expectations for a firm and durable production from this tight Rotliegend reservoir. This summer we will spud the second production well K18-G4 in the northern extent of the field. Based
on the good results of this first tight gas project, Win-tershall will focus on the development of more tight gas fields in the Dutch offshore.” Jan Dirk Bokhoven, CEO of coinvestor EBN comments: “We are pleased to have supported this project that takes us one step
further to developing tight gas fields offshore. It proves that a proper devel-opment of a tight reservoir can go hand in hand with excellent eco-nomic, environmental and safety performance.” Wintershall has a share of 41.7 percent in K18-Golf. The other
com-panies participating are EBN (40 percent), NAM (15.9 percent), Tullow (2.2 percent) and OranjeNassau Energie (0.2 percent). Win-tershall was awarded the concession block K18 in 1983. The natural gas field was discovered in 2005.

Reservoir Group appoints new well intervention and measurements managing director Reservoir Group announces the appointment of Fraser Louden as managing director of its well intervention and measurements business. Acting as the Group management team’s interface with its growing portfolio of companies, Mr Louden joins from an executive advisor role at FMC Technologies and previous expertise at READ Well Services Ltd, where he held key roles including chief executive officer, vice president, business development manager and R&D manager. A former chief executive officer of the READ ASA group, Mr Louden also held key appointments covering regions including the North Sea, USA, Nigeria, China and Brazil. His appointment is a statement of intent from Reservoir Group to build on its growing success throughout 2012 and beyond. It follows the appointment of a new chief operating officer and a 60 per cent rise in revenue during the previous year. In his new Aberdeen-based role, Mr Louden will provide support, direction and assistance to the intervention and measurements member companies, guiding the integration of the Group’s specialist firms and leading the delivery of a clearly focused and strategic sector of the Reservoir Group. Mr Louden has a wealth of experience in company management, business development, marketing, sales
and strategy planning and implementation. Reservoir Group chief operating officer, Wade McCutcheon, said: “Fraser’s appointment is a key strategic move and we welcome him to the Group as managing director of the well intervention and measurements businesses. His experience of leading small and large organisations through transitional periods provides him with all of the necessary tools to help our intervention and measurement companies realise their full potential. “Beyond his role as a vital interface between the Group’s management team and members, Fraser brings a dynamic and hands-on approach aligned with our core strategies. With confidence in the industry high and development opportunities growing further still, Reservoir Group remains eager to work with the best in the business to ensure our members and our customers continue to enjoy success.”
Mr Louden said: “With a clear identity and focused strategy, the intervention and measurements members of the Group will become an even more visible proposition in their market sector – delivering the goal of becoming clear owners of that segment. “My intention is to build on the Group’s continued success, assisting with the delivery of strong financial results and the globalisation of the smaller member companies. A top priority will be enabling our intervention and measurements firms to gain confidence in taking a more aggressive attitude towards growth. “Reservoir Group’s philosophy of its members retaining autonomy while becoming a part of a larger organisation is both unique and interesting. This role will provide a visible and rewarding opportunity to help guide the intervention and measurements companies to reach their full potential.”
Tug Fairmount Alpine has performed escort services for a bulk carrier on request of international salvage company Smit Salvage. The bulker suffered structural damages while in Brazil. Smit contracted Fairmount Marine for first stand-by and, later, as escort during the trans-Atlantic crossing of the bulk carrier. When contracted in December Fairmount Marine mobilized super class tug Fairmount Alpine from Jamaica to Brazil. When arrived in Brazil, after a stop in Trinidad for supplies, the Fairmount Alpine was ordered to be stand-by for safety precaution. The Fairmount Alpine also assisted the salvage team with some cargo runs. After almost two months Fairmount Alpine was requested to escort the bulk carrier during her trans-Atlantic voyage from Brazil to Walvis Bay, Namibia. After arrival in Walvis Bay the Fairmount Alpine was released from her escort duties and mobilized to her next assignment. The stand-by and escort services of Fairmount Alpine were the third salvage operation in a row for the Dutch flagged tug. Earlier the Fairmount Alpine assisted in the salvage of a drifted container vessel offshore the coast of Cuba, followed by assisting a salvage team in refloating a 30.000 DWT cargo vessel in the approach of Puerto Cortes, Honduras.

Emerging technology set to raise the bar for offshore transfers As a global leader in safe marine transfer solutions, Reflex Marine has helped to change the safety culture in the offshore industry. It continues to work closely with operators, lifting specialists and vessel owners to develop a more integrated approach to personnel transfer operations. Around 10 million marine transfers are estimated to be carried out every year and Reflex has gained worldwide recognition by being at the frontline of the introduction of safer and more weather capable technologies. It is also regarded as the leading specialist in harsh weather environments, with extensive experience in the Arctic Circle and other challenging regions.
approach isimproving safety and efficiency. “We will provide an update on our recently launched 10 Golden Rules for crane transfer safety, the result of a collaboration by three companies, which draws on our experience of millions of transfer operations performed each year in the industry. It is
hoped that these ‘rules’ will become recognized as a global standard for best practice transfer operations.” At the conference, Reflex will discuss the increasing use of formal training as a key tool in the management of risk, with recent examples given of how cranetransfer plays a vital role in evacuations and other emergencies. The spotlight will be focused on emerging technologies. These include deck motion monitoring systems that allowcrane operators to accurately interpret vessel motions. A crane operator can better assess if a transfer
can be safely performed, and can define thesafest landing areas in real time. These systems can provide a significant overall reduction in vessel operating costs. A new generation of transfer devices, now under development, which are designed to improve safety and further increase safe operating envelopes will also be revealed, with an overview given on the current standards and guidelines in place around the world in relation to safe lifting practices for personnel. Mr Strong added: “We will also take another look at evacuation provisions, as recent
events around the world have reemphasized the importance of preparedness for emergency scenarios. The approach to managing emergencies varies radically from region to region, but it is difficult to over-state the importance of the industry getting this right. The positive news is that increased industry awareness and training coupled with improving technology is bringing very important new tools to the disposal of those responsible for directing emergency operations. If these options are recognized and deployed properly and we prepare for a range of emergency scenarios, we should be able to considerably reduce risks for offshore workers.”
The company will share its vision of the future of marine based crew logistics at the upcoming North Sea Offshore Crane and Lifting Conference in Aberdeen (April 24-26). The conference, now in its 17th year, is recognised as the most important meeting place for the offshore lifting and material handling industry. Last year’s event saw 16 nations and more than 200 delegates represented. Managing Director and cofounder of Reflex Marine, Phillip Strong said: “New technology continues to develop rapidly in the field of crane transfer. We will focus on some of the most advanced crane transfer operations taking place around the world, examining track records and how an integrated
Siemens expands its competence in subsea power grid solutions UK deep-sea specialist acquired for EUR470 million. Siemens is to take over the Connectors and Measurements Division of Expro Holdings UK, a company specializing in the oil and gas industry. The unit engineers and manufactures subsea components such as cable connectors, sensors and measuring devices under the trade names Tronic and Matre.
Tronic stands for electrical connectors that enable both power transmission and communication on subsea installations. Under Matre a wide range of temperature and pressure sensors for subsea use is marketed. This equipment forms a crucial part of the power grid that Siemens is currently developing for use on the sea bed at depths of down to 3,000 meters. In calendar year 2011, the Expro division booked sales of about 90 million euros and currently has a workforce of
about 450 people in the United Kingdom (Ulverston), Norway (Bomlo), the United States (Houston), Brazil (Niteroi) and Malaysia (Johor). The purchase price is about 470 Mio. euros. The transaction is conditional upon approval by the responsible anti-trust authorities. “With this acquisition we are strategically expanding our portfolio in the attractive future market for subsea power grids,” says Adil Toubia, CEO of the Oil & Gas Division at Siemens Energy.
“We can now enhance our know-how in electrification and our research and development activities with the newly acquired skills. Tronic and Matre products are market leaders and will help us expand our portfolio and further develop our business. That will bring us another step closer to our goal of becoming one of the leading providers of subsea power grid and distribution solutions,” says Toubia. Deep-sea applications are one of the fastest-growing market segments within the oil and gas industry. The market volume is expected to reach two billion euros by 2020. A subsea power grid will serve various power consumers such as compressors or pumps operating in the deep sea. In March 2011, Siemens had already acquired the two Norwegian companies Bennex
and Poseidon. That brought the company both know-how in subsea power distribution systems and skills in marinization and general subsea engineering. As part of the Power Grid development program Siemens last year opened a technology and test center for subsea equipment in Trondheim, Norway. Over the next few years Siemens, building on its strong subsea competence base in Norway, intends to expand its own subsea activities, also offering its full product range in Houston, Rio de Janeiro and Singapore. Extracting and processing oil and gas is becoming more and more complex as the readily accessible reserves on land are dwindling and new deposits have to be tapped in remote regions and far beneath the sea. The smaller the deposit and the higher the pressure under water, the more difficult it gets to extract and
process oil and gas from these fields. At present, this means that 30 percent less of the raw commodity can be extracted from a deep-sea reservoir than from a similar deposit on land. Extracting and processing oil and gas at depths down to 3,000 meters would be unthinkable without a reliable power supply directly on the sea bed. Siemens is currently developing a subsea power grid. This will make it possible to process oil and gas exhaustively and economically on the sea bed, where the components are exposed to high pressures of up to 300 bar (300 kg/cm2). The subsea power grid can help to boost the production capacity of a reservoir on the sea bed and exploit even small reservoirs that otherwise would be uneconomical. At the same time it would improve the safety and reliability of the installations.
