Intertek secures £3 million contract Intertek, the global provider of quality and safety services, has secured work with Maersk Oil UK worth £3 million to provide offshore chemists and onshore laboratory analysis support.

New MD announces acquisition and bold growth strategy at CSL CSL, the Aberdeen-based subsea project delivery and management company, has appointed a new Managing Director who is developing and leading the company’s bold growth strategy, via a combination of organic growth and acquisition.

Sean Girvan took up the post in October and today unveiled expansion plans, announcing that the company has completed the acquisition of Project Excellence LLP, a specialist project and risk management consultancy provider to the energy industry, which will now trade as a division of CSL known as CSL Project Excellence.

CSL has built its reputation on the management and delivery of subsea projects but has evolved to provide a fully integrated service offering that can cover the management, engineering, specialist services and resources requirement for a project from the development through execution to operational phases, they aim to deliver maximum value

Reflex Marine hosts influential Brazilian delegation in Aberdeen Reflex Marine, a global leader in safe marine transfer solutions, hosted a prestigious delegation from Brazil’s burgeoning energy industry. The visit to Woollard and Henry in Aberdeen, which acts as a construction base for the company’s specialist crew transfer equipment, was a great success despite the sub-zero temperatures.

They were keen to explore the industryleading FROG device and were strapped in to experience first hand the security and safety offered by the protective apparatus.

The FROG and TORO (Reflex Marine’s other transfer device) were designed to greatly reduce

the risk to passengers during transfer, after the company analysed incidents of injury occurring during rope basket operations. Seat belts reduce the risk of falling from the basket – the cause of half of all injuries using rope basket, while a protective frame and shock absorbing seats reduce the risk of injury through lateral impacts (accounting for 35% of injuries) or vertical impacts (22%).

Reflex Marine is currently working with the Brazilian Navy to gain accreditation for the FROG to operate on board vessels registered in the country, although several operators have already put the device to use using foreign ships. During the visit, UK Trade and Investment’s marine sector manager for Brazil, Paula Abreu said: “It was a great opportunity for the delegation to actually see how safe transfers can be made using a TORO or a FROG. I believe the device revolutionises the way transfers can be made in such a safe and professional way.”

Two Partners Joining Office Bracewell & Giuliani LLP announced today that it is adding energy Partners Julian Nichol and Alastair Young to its London office. IHC Handling Systems t ASK force delivers innovative pile guiding tool to Seajacks w IHC Handling Systems, part of IHC Merwede, has delivered a pile guiding tool for the installation of 80 wind turbine foundations at sea. This innovative tool was designed and constructed by IHC Handling Systems, and then installed on board Seajacks’ new jack-up vessel, ZARATAN, in autumn 2012. The company was awarded the contract on the strength of its vast expertise and experience in the offshore market.

Complete package The pile guiding tool is part of an extensive package of advanced handling and lifting equipment that was supplied by IHC Handling Systems. The complete order consists, next to the pile guiding tool, of a 700t upending tool and accompanying hydraulic power packs.

The equipment is being used on the Meerwind offshore wind farm project in the German North Sea.The monopiles – which are essential for the foundation of windmills – are lifted and positioned by the equipment more efficiently than they were previously. Indeed, 25 monopiles have been successfully installed since September last year.

Installation process The foundation of the wind turbines in the Meerwind offshore wind farm project consists of a monopile and transition piece.

The monopiles have an outer diameter of 5,500mm, an overall length of 64m and a maximum weight of 680t. The transition

piece connects the monopile to the mast of the wind turbine.

The new pile guiding tool has replaced the commonly used ‘upending bucket’ and ‘guiding and positioning tool’ by combining two operations – tilting and positioning – into one piece of equipment. In doing so, it saves valuable time during the installation process. In addition, less deck space is required and the tool is much lighter than the current equipment.

Joint effort by IHC Merwede The new IHC Handling Systems’ tool was produced in conjunction with several sister companies, including: IHC Vremac Cylinders, which supplied the cylinders; IHC Winches, where the assembly and testing took place. And above all, the piling specialist IHC Hydrohammer®, which supplied the S-2000 hydraulic hammer for driving the monopiles.

1. Please introduce yourself My name is Richard Nethercott.

2. What does your home situation look like?

I live in a small town called Welshpool in Mid Wales, UK 3. What is your current position and where is your stand?

I am currently the newest floorman in our drill crew.

4. What are your daily activities?

Depending on the well situation, as a floorman your main tasks are to look after drilling equipment. So at times it is necessary to service or repair tools used for the job.

There are many many other various tasks to be completed but each trip offshore is different to the last.

5. How did you end up in the offshore industry?

I had been applying to companies since I was 18 (7years ago), but, none of them were interested in taking me on due to my inexperience. I was beginning to give up until a friend of mine put me in touch with USG energy.

They invited me out for an interview in January 2009 then a month later i was already beginning my first trip offshore.

6. How long have you been working in the offshore

industry?

Since February 2009 7. Tell us about your dreams!

I believe everyone who becomes a floorman has the same dreams. Keep climbing the ladder until you reach Rig manager or even beyond that.

I'm no different. I would like to become a Rig manager one day.

It wont be for many years, but, i'd like to think one day i'l get there.

8. With whom would you like to trade places with?

Peter Griffin from Family Guy. What a legend!

9. How do you spend your leisure time?

I spend as much time with my girlfriend as possible. Also I enjoy having a few drinks with my friends whilst watching football. Im a huge fan of football.

I’ve done a bit of travelling the past few years also. Id like to continue travelling over the next few years aswell.

10. Do you keep a track of the news? If so, which item?

I watch the news every morning.

No specific item really, its just nice to know whats going on in the world. If i'm honest though, i do pay a lot more attention when the sports news comes on.

11. What is your motto in life?

'Why tip toe through life, just so you can arrive safely at death'! I believe everyone should live life to the fullest, because you never know whats going to happen.

Expro celebrates Middle East success with enhanced growth in the year ahead International oilfield services company Expro has announced a highly successful year for activity in the Middle East and anticipates further strong growth in 2013.

The company saw significant demand for a range of its services in the region, particularly its Drill Stem Testing (DST) and Meters offerings, and has a healthy order book for next year. It also anticipates enhanced activity for its Early Production Facilities (EPF) business in the year ahead.

Expro introduced its DST capabilities into the Middle East in 2012 and secured six contracts for production testing in Egypt, with further activity in Iraq. Iraq has also proved to be a successful market for its Meters services and the company will look to expand this section of the business into Libya, Algeria and Saudi Arabia in 2013.

To ensure a high quality of service, Expro has also continued to invest significantly in its core well testing business in line with increased opportunities as well as expand its wireline intervention capabilities.

Hussein Elsisi, Business Development Manager for Middle East and North Africa, said: “We are seeing a healthy growth in our DST activity in the Middle East as more and more companies recognise the benefits of working with a company that offers the complete well test package with some of the industry’s most reliable technologies, including

Simmons UK Announce $2.3 Billion of oil and gas deals in 2012

Simmons & Co in Aberdeen today announced that it completed 14 deals in 2012 with a total value of $2.3billion, more than double the total value of deals completed by the firm in 2011. The corporate finance advisers to the energy sector have played a significant role in many of the most prominent transactions that took place across the oil and gas service sector in 2012 including deals subsea, well services, drilling and completions sectors.

Colin Welsh, chief executive officer at Simmons said: "Getting the best result for our clients in the current environment has been challenging because the market dynamics keep changing as new buyers emerge and the sector

On the buy side, Simmons represented Tetra Technologies Inc in its acquisition of Aberdeen based rig cooling specialists Optima and assisted Pheonix Equity Partners in their acquisition of Gall Thomson Environmental in the flow control sector.

‘Second youth’ for Clipper Stad Amsterdam

The three-masted, steel-hulled Clipper ‘Stad Amsterdam’ undergoes a complete overhaul at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen, the Netherlands. The revision of the thirteen year old vessel will give her a ‘second youth’. The work will be finished before the end of May 2013.

At the moment the Clipper is already at the yard and all interiors have been removed, including the boarding of the accommodation.

All technical equipment will get a complete overhaul or will be replaced if necessary. Also the standing rigging of the Clipper will be renewed.

Roland Berendsen, managing director of shipping company Clipper Stad Amsterdam. “The vessel sails without interruption 365 days a year over the oceans. Sea, sun, salt and wind have left their traces. Next to an annual regular maintenance period, we’ve chosen one big, radical revamp giving the vessel a second youth. Hereafter she sails again for ten to fifteen years.’’

Thirteen years ago Damen was closely involved in the finishing of the Clipper, delivering the hull at its yard Oranjewerf in Amsterdam.

“That makes it especially nice that we were asked for this revamp,” says Bas Loohuis, Commercial Manager for Damen Shiprepair & Conversion.

Berendsen praises the cooperation with Damen. ,,We’re just a small shipping company with only one vessel and thus a very small staff.

Thanks to the cooperation of the yard we only need limited extra expertise for this job.’’

Scope of Work

Originally the boarding were glued on the superstructure, but that has caused difficulty with maintenance.

The new boarding will be mounted with some clearance onto the superstructure for proper ventilation.

The removal of the Clipper’s interior has already resulted in 175 ton of waste. The 123 ton of ballast lead will be taken off the ship also. Then the hull of the Stad Amsterdam is blasted en conserved. Also some of the hull sheets will be renewed.

The renewed Clipper Stad Amsterdam will make sea trials mid May 2013, according to planning. On June 1st the vessel will set sail for Rouen, France.

Fairmount tugs deliver Tamar jacket in Mediterranean Sea

Tugs Fairmount Summit and Fairmount Alpine have delivered the new build Noble Tamar jacket at location in the Tamar gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean. Both tugs towed the barge on which the jacket was loaded from te US to the field South-East of Cyprus.

The 18,500 ton jacket was build in the US. In Corpus Christi the jacket was loaded on the 260 meters long barge H-851, world’s largest launch and

Soft Rope Traction Winch - CASE: Shell Perdido Spar Platform When Shell was designing the Perdido Spar platform’s subsea asset deployment and retrieval system, it faced a problem: at water depths over 8,000 feet, a traditional wire rope drum winch system would be too heavy for the platform on which it was to rest. A revolutionary new winch/ rope system was needed.

The Perdido Spar, operated by Shell on behalf of partners BP and Chevron, is part of the world’s deepest oil production facility. It is the most remote producing platform in the Gulf

of Mexico, almost 220 miles off the coast of Texas, and the only development in the region to use subsea separation and boosting equipment. The development features 22 wells and 13 more well tie-backs, which must be changed out and serviced at regular intervals.

Rather than deploying offshore service vessels to the remote development at great expense, the Perdido Spar’s design includes a winch system allowing the platform to service the subsea equipment itself. However, operating in nearly 9,000 feet of water while handling payloads of up to 90,000 pounds can be a challenge. Compounding the problem, the Perdido Spar design places the winch on a cantilevered deck (a smaller deck extending out from the main platform) imposing significant weight restrictions.

A traditional steel wire rope of this length would be prohibitively heavy. Weighing 81,750 pounds, it would double the necessary lifting capacity of the winch. This would in turn increase the size of the winch and cause significant structural modifications to the spar.

Shell turned to Logan Industries for a simple, yet unique tractionstyle winch design and to Samson for its expertise in high-strength, lightweight synthetics This combination met the weight and footprint restrictions of the cantilevered deck and was more than capable of performing the subsea operations.

Samson provided 9,200 feet of 2-1/2" diameter Quantum-12 rope.

Weighing 85% less than a wire rope of similar size and length, this greatly reduced the deck weight.

The biggest advantage, however, is that Quantum-12 is neutrally buoyant and adds no weight to the payload. This allows the winch to work at full capacity regardless of depth.

TWMA targets Scandinavian growth with new region manager TWMA, the leader in integrated drilling services and environmental solutions for the international onshore and offshore oil and gas industry, has appointed Leif Ove Svensen as Scandinavia region manager.

Mr Svensen has more than 22 years’ experience in the upstream oil and gas sector and previously held senior management positions within a number of Norwegian oil and gas service companies.

Responsible for managing the implementation of TWMA’s growth strategy for the region, Svensen will play a key role in the further development of the company’s Stavanger and Mongstad bases.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Svensen said: “Some of the largest operators within the industry have major interests in Norway and the Scandinavia region. As demand for TWMA’s solutions continues to grow, it is important

that we continue to deliver the quality service for which we are known, providing operators with a complete solutions package.”

TWMA currently employs 30 people at its recently improved Stavanger and Mongstad bases, supplying onshore processing, slops treatment and support services for skip and ship operations in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

TWMA’s sales director Rob O’Neill adds: “Norway is a key strategic region for TWMA. We have recently increased the capacity at our Mongstad base and this means that we are perfectly placed to provide Norwegian operators with solutions that are both cost-

Continued growth in traffic highlights regional importance of Aberdeen harbour Aberdeen Harbour recorded significant growth in activity throughout 2012 with total vessel tonnage for the year increasing by more than eight per cent, from nearly 26million tonnes to just over 28million tonnes.

The increase highlights the continued importance of Aberdeen Harbour to the energy sector operating in the UK Continental Shelf, as well as general commercial traffic, with the total tonnage of cargo also up almost 8 per cent from 4.76million tonnes in 2011 to 5.14million tonnes in 2012.

“It is also clear that our decision to widen and deepen the navigation channel has had a positive impact on our business and highlights our commitment to ensure that our customers and continue to receive a world class service.”

In addition to larger tonnages and cargo throughput, the overall number of vessels entering the port also grew, from 7,784 in 2011 to 8,142 in 2012 and included a number of vessels entering the port for the first time following the completion of a £5.2million project to widen and deepen the navigation channel.

Colin Parker, chief executive of Aberdeen Harbour Board, said: “We continue to see significant year on year increases in vessel

In order to respond to growing demand for space and services, Aberdeen Harbour Board has submitted an application as a candidate to the Scottish Government’s National Planning Framework review. In support of this the Board have produced their Directions for Growth document which outlines the findings from an ongoing feasibility study, which was launched in September last year, to assess the viability of potential expansion options for a new or improved harbour facility.

The identification of possible sites and the emergence of a potentially preferred site in Nigg Bay or the continued development of the existing harbour, will be subject to additional analysis including traffic modelling and environmental appraisal.

“Any future development of the port will require a robust business case, however, Aberdeen Harbour is a key regional resource that generates more than £500million for the North East economy annually,” adds Mr. Parker.

“Potential development opportunities will help safeguard the port and the city’s position within the energy industry, ensuring the harbour is equipped to accommodate the growth in activity anticipated in the years to come.

“Development of current port facilities has allowed us to accommodate larger vessels, so with this and increasing traffic projected, enhancing facilities will ensure Aberdeen continues to meet the needs of customers while attracting new business to the North East of Scotland.”
