Damen Shipyards group opens office in Stavanger, Norway Advanced base for new Sales Manager Remko Hottentot Damen, COO of Damen Shipyards Group, officially opened a new office in Norwegian Stavanger. When asked why Dutch headquartered Damen Shipyards sets up an advanced base in Stavanger, its new Sales Manager Remko Hottentot said: “It is the European Oil & Gas capital and the place the ONS Exhibition and conferences are held. Stavanger is, so to speak, a mini-Houston”. Mr Hottentot has an international nautical background and experience in the Offshore and LNG industries. He married to a Norwegian lady over 22 years ago, speaks the language fluently and it is therefore no surprise that he feels quite at home in Norway. The opening gave Mr Hottentot a chance to show what Damen is about and in particular that Damen is becoming more and more active in the Offshore industry. Damen booked newbuilding orders for a series of four Platform Supply Vessels to be built at Damen Shipyard Galati (Romania) and another two to be built at Damen Shipyards Bergum (The Netherlands). Three Damen Ocean-going Patrol Vessels of the Holland Class were docked at Vågen, close to the office in the centre of Stavanger. One of the vessels, HNLMS Zeeland, was visited by the invitees at the opening.

Various vessels The three vessels OPV Zeeland, Holland and Groningen are part of the new Holland Class Oceangoing Patrol Vessels. The class is designed for patrolling and intervention, notably against light armed opposition, such as pirates. The vessel is also suited for assistance in international emergencies. Mr Hottentot adds: “We are still a modest player in the

offshore industry, but experienced in designing and building PSV’s, Seismic Research Support Vessels, Fast Crew Suppliers and Offshore Wind catamarans.

driven. That is exactly what the Damen Group is and for the Norwegian market to become familiar with”, says Remko Hottentot.

Customers can buy virtually off the shelf. One Norwegian customer found that out when he told me he was looking for a 10 m long tugboat. On second thought, he said, a 12 m long vessel would be more suitable. I could immediately show him both and arrange delivery within two months, if so desired.”

Product range

“The fast response and the fact that Damen is a family-owned business appears to be appealing to Norwegian business partners. Generally speaking, Norwegian companies themselves are familyowned. People know that this can mean an easy accessible management and being customer

Damen offers a wide range of ships, such as: tugs, workboats, patrol vessels, high speed crafts, dredgers, cargo vessels, PSV’s, oil-spill response vessels, patrol vessels, frigates and even mega yachts. Product design and engineering are carried out in-house and a broad range of standard designs is available. Damen’s product development policy is driven by an extensive R&D programme, customer feedback and (field) experience. The Damen Norway office will serve all shipbuilding markets as of the opening today.

AVEVA publishes new business paper Plant Design for Lean Construction The next generation of plant design reduces rework and accelerates project schedules AVEVA today announced its release of a new business paper focused on the adoption of a Lean Construction philosophy by Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies. The paper looks at what is required from the next generation of plant design products to make a step change in project execution efficiency and presents AVEVA’s insight on how to apply Lean principles in the plant industries. “When we first devised the concept for the Future of Plant Design, Lean Construction was the key driver”, said Dave Wheeldon, CTO & Head of Engineering Design Systems, AVEVA. “Lean Construction is founded on three key principles: respect for people by empowering all levels of an organisation, eliminating nonvalue adding activity by adopting a zero tolerance of wastage, and maximising the efficiency of activities that add value. “It has always been a challenge to adopt the Lean philosophy to major capital projects due

to the fragmented nature of the supply chain and the one-off nature of the project itself. There is now evidence that companies are open to change and thinking about new contracting styles to improve efficiency. New technologies such as affordable laser scanning and mobile computing have already allowed AVEVA to create an innovation which can enable EPCs to adopt a version of Lean Construction for EPC projects.” AVEVA’s new product, AVEVA Everything3D (E3D), enables the realisation of Plant Design for Lean Construction. It reduces project execution duration and allows increased productivity for quicker ROI. Enhanced feedback from fabrication and construction to design will enable EPCs to benefit by eliminating or managing rework early in the design processes rather than by crisis management on the construction site. Wheeldon added “The move to Lean is a significant challenge, but the benefits are plain to see. As this paper demonstrates, the approach will add competitiveness, increased profitability, improved delivery success and an enhanced brand image for the EPC. Operators will enjoy faster time to first production or first oil and receive a 3D model which is a true reflection of their constructed asset.”

Safety leaders recognised at OSCC Awards Organisations helping to build a safe and competent oil and gas workforce around the world have been recognised as OPITO announced the winners of the 2012 OPITO Safety and Competency Awards. The top honour – the Chairman’s Award – went to Stephen Macklin, HSE manager at Shell for his passionate commitment to helping improve the skills and safety of the oil and gas workforce in Iraq.

OPITO, said: “With a strong moral compass and sense of social fairness, Stephen has contributed

much over the years, not least his current involvement in driving the development of the Abu Alkaseeb vocational training centre in Basra. “Working towards the goal of helping the people of Iraq gain the world class skills that will enable them to rightly take their place in

Mr Macklin has demonstrated exceptional leadership as chair of the Iraq IOC Forum to promote and inform of the value of a standards based approach to workforce development using the OPITO standards and has worked continuously with the skills body to see the standards adopted across Iraq. Commenting on the award, David Doig, Group chief executive of

the workplace and make a proud contribution to the success of their oil and gas industry, Stephen is a well-deserved recipient of this award and a popular winner within the oil and gas community.” This year’s Employer of the Year Award went to McDermott Middle East in recognition of the organisation’s commitment to building a safe and competent workforce through the use of OPITO standards. McDermott Middle East’s UAE training centre was the first noncommercial training organisation in the region to achieve OPITO accreditation. Completing the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) course is mandatory for all employees prior to any offshore visit or assignment and the company has also announced plans to deliver in-house rigging training at Jebel Ali Ports to OPITO standards. The final award, Training Provider of the Year, went to Petrofac Training Services for their commitment towards developing the skills of their staff to deliver OPITO training. The company, which operates seven OPITO certified training centres globally, provided the Gulf of Mexico’s first OPITO approved training course in 2004. In feedback, course partners have rated the training provided by Petrofac as “world class”. This training has helped Petrofac

remain lost time injury free for more than three years and led to a 30% reduction in minor incidents over the last 12 months. Mr Doig added: “These awards set out to recognise and reward those companies and individuals who continue to push the boundaries and ensure the safety of the global oil and gas industry workforce. “An impressive shortlist this year meant it was tougher than ever to identify the winners however we are delighted to be able to recognise those who have not only helped shape the industry’s past but are a vital part in driving forward its future.” The winners were announced at the OPITO Safety and Competency Conference (OSCC) in Abu Dhabi. The one-day event was introduced in 2010 as a way to bring operators, contractors and the supply chain together with training organisations to provide a forum for improving standards of safety and competency that protect the workforce and the industry’s reputation. Around 300 delegates from around the world attended OSCC 2012 which focused on the theme of Managing the Safety Chain. Sponsored by Falck Nutec, SEFtec Global Training and Atlas, the conference saw NASA astronaut Mike Mullane deliver the keynote address.

FEI QEMSCAN WellSite Expands to Onsite Core Analysis Advanced onsite core analysis provides fast support for critical decisions in formation evaluation and drilling operations. FEI (NASDAQ: FEIC) and Kirk Petrophysics (Surrey, U.K.) today announced that FEI has delivered a QEMSCAN® WellSite™ analysis system to Kirk Petrophysics who will use it to provide rapid onsite analysis of drill cores in oil and gas drilling operations. Core analysis is an essential component of formation evaluation used by geologists and engineers to determine the production potential of a well and to manage drilling and completion operations. Having this capability at the well site enables reduction of analytical turnaround from several days or weeks to just a few hours (after the cores are retrieved from the core barrels or sidewall coring tools).

“Our QEMSCAN WellSite systems are now used in the petroleum industry, not only to evaluate drill cuttings in mud logging units, but also for onsite analysis of core samples,” said Paul Scagnetti, vice

Kirk Petrophysics, added, “The automated mineralogy capability provided by the QEMSCAN WellSite solution increases the speed and accuracy of our core analysis. In addition to microscopic mineralogy information, it can also provide two-dimensional porosity measurements and textural detail for lithological classification, which is valuable characterization information.

president and general manager of FEI’s Natural Resources Business Unit. “Currently, most of the core evaluation laboratories are located in busy centralized support labs in major cities around the world; it can take days or weeks to transport core samples and get the needed analytical results.

With the QEMSCAN WellSite system, we can move that advanced analytical capability right to the drill site, significantly reducing the time it takes to get the information to the people who need it most. Near real-time decisions are important for our customers to optimize their drilling and completion designs, especially in high rig-cost environments, such as deepwater operations.”

Worse yet, in some remote locations it is logistically impossible to transport samples, or their movements are restricted by government regulations, severely limiting the analysis that can be performed on these core samples. The new QEMSCAN WellSite solution addresses these challenges; it provides essential analytical capability at the drilling site where it can deliver quick results to answer critical questions in E&P operations.” Jean-Valery Garcia, managing director of

The QEMSCAN WellSite system is an impressive solution that complements the services provided by Kirk Petrophysics to the global oil and gas industry. The system has been developed to reflect the operational imperatives of the industry, and exemplifies FEI’s commitment to lead in technological innovation in the oil and gas sector. “We are particularly pleased to be working with Kirk Petrophysics,” adds Scagnetti. “Not only are they part of the Reservoir Group, one of

the fastest growing world-wide suppliers of oil field services, they are also the first to apply QEMSCAN WellSite to onsite core analysis. Until now, it had been used onsite primarily to look at drill cuttings, so this is a significant step for us in expanding this unique technology to a new market segment.” The QEMSCAN WellSite system combines scanning electron microscopy and X-ray spectrometry to deliver automated mineralogical analysis. It also provides automated microscopic textural

details, elemental compositional and two- dimensional core porosity analysis unavailable from conventional techniques. The QEMSCAN WellSite system is a ruggedized solution that is specifically designed to withstand the harsh environment of the drilling rig. The compact configuration takes up little space and simplified operation reduces the need for operator training and expertise. The oil and gas industry uses QEMSCAN WellSite to reduce risks and improve lifting costs, based on knowledge derived from the micro analysis of drill cuttings and cores.

t ASK force

In this edition, the sequel from the returning section taskforce. The employers and employees pass each other the writing pen to answer to a variety of questions. This time: Paul Kaal.

2. What does your home situation look like? I’m living with my girlfriend, two dogs and cats.

4. What are your daily activities? My daily activities are working at refrigeration installations (heat pumps) HVAC installations, airconditioning, etc….. I also do all of the quotations for our customers, including sending the invoices. 5. How did you end up in the offshore industry? As a former employee from GEA grenco BV I was send out to the offshore locations. So that’s how it started. At a serten moment I was asked to join Petro Canada for the project De Ruyter P11B. So that’s how I became a mechanic for Petro Canada. After a while I also started to work onshore to keep myself busy with refregeration jobs. And I have made a dicission to start my own company after three years. Petro Canada, now Dana Petroleum Netherlands BV has become my client sinds I left them as a mechanic. So I come to Dana Petroleum for HVAC jobs on there platforms. Sometimes they asked me the come for a short period as a cranedriver or mechanic when they need one. So from time to time I’m stil offshore.

Reflex Marine, a global leader in safe marine transfer solutions, has attracted interest from operators in the Gulf of Mexico after hosting a crane and lifting open day at its new Accredited Service Centre (ASC) in Houston. The company, expert in the safe transfer of personnel to and from offshore installations, has been experiencing increasing demand from operators in the region, where the importance of reducing risk within the energy industry remains firmly in the spotlight.

1. Please introduce yourself My name is Paul Kaal and I’m almost 50 years old and currently living in Anna Paulowna.

3. What is your current position and where is your stand? At this moment I’m one of the owners of H.P.S. witch stand for HeatPumpService. Our company is based in Anna Paulowna. (There are planes to move to Alkmaar). H.P.S is a company for HVAC and refrigeration.

Reflex Marine attracts interest at us crane and lifting open day

Companies from across the region took the opportunity to see Reflex Marine’s specialist equipment – the industry-leading FROG and TORO personnel carriers – being demonstrated at the new ASC. Some tested the safety equipment by strapping themselves in to experience a lift first-hand.

6.How long have you been working in the offshore industry? That will be approxmently about twenty years now. I started in 1992. 7. Tell us about your dreams! I’m not a dreamer, so there’s nothing to tell you about that. If I want something, I will do my best to come there were I want to be. 8. With whom would you like to trade places with? Nobody, I’m ok with who I am. 9. How do you spend your leisure time? Around my home, doing usual things at the house, walking the dogs. Take my laptop and try to think off new stuff for my work. Watch TV. I’m not a person who is really busy with free time. I’m more a workaholic. 10. Do you keep a track of the news? If so, which item, national or regional. No, don’t keep track of it. 11. What is your motto in life? Try to live without problems, and hopefully stay healthy. If you want something, don’t wait for tomorrow, it may be too late. You only live one lifetime.

The event introduced the Houston ASC and new technology, including the HAWK Deck Motion Monitor, to the local industry. It was well received by all who attended. Clients will now be able to

source accredited inspection and maintenance services. Sparrows Group, acting as the accredited service centre for Houston, will also offer training for crews who are new to the technology as well as a replacement parts service. With units available for lease, as well as for sale, potential clients will be able to try out the units without necessarily having to buy them. Reflex Marine’s business manager for North America Grant Wintle said: “Operators are becoming more aware of the options which are available to them and as a result we have been seeing increasing demand for our technology, particularly in the United States. The open day was a big success and many of the people who visited were delighted to be able to sample the technology and were very impressed by what they saw.

“For many people crane transfer conjures up images of the traditional rope basket. By establishing an ASC in the heart of the North American energy industry we are not only enhancing the services we offer to our clients in the Gulf of Mexico but also offering the opportunity for others to witness first-hand the advances which have been made in safety in recent years.” The FROG and TORO have been designed to greatly reduce the risk to passengers during transfer, after the company analysed incidents of injury occurring during rope basket operations. Seat belts reduce the risk of falling from the basket – the cause of half of all injuries using rope basket, while a protective frame and shock absorbing seats reduce the risk of injury through lateral impacts (accounting for 35% of injuries) or vertical impacts (22%). Reflex Marine has established ASCs in Canada, Norway, Dubai, Singapore and the Caspian region, with plans for opening further centres in other locations.

11-vessel order with DMS Rescue Gear Ship for the An 11-vessel order for DMS Maritime Pty Limited culminated recently with a Rescue Gear Ship 9316, which will be used to support the Royal Australian Navy’s submarine fleet. Damen Shipyards and DMS Maritime signed the contract for the RGS 9316 on November 16 in Sydney, Australia. The vessel will be built at a Damen yard in Vietnam and is due to be delivered in 2016. Having built a similar vessel, the SD Victoria for Serco UK supporting the Royal Navy, the RGS 9316 is based on a proven Damen concept. Since 2011, DMS Maritime has ordered five tugboats (four Azimuth tugs - a Damen ASD Tug 2310, an ASD Tug 2009 and two ASD 2411s) as well as a Stan Tug 1606 for Rockingham, Darwin and Sydney and four water fuel lighters (due for delivery in 2013/14). Four of the five tugs have been delivered. The ASD Tug 2009 will be delivered mid-2013. As well as this, a contract for an Escape Gear Ship 8316 Submarine Rescue Vessel was signed in August. This ship will be delivered in 2015. Based in Sydney, DMS Maritime is part of the international service company Serco, which works with governments worldwide. Under the Fleet Marine Services Contract for the Royal Australian Navy DMS Maritime operates a fleet of around seventy-five vessels on Navy’s behalf.

On time, in budget Roland Briene, Damen Regional

Sales Director – Asia Pacific, comments: “This really is a remarkable project. After working on this contract for more than three years, we are proud to say that all the vessels so far have been delivered ahead of schedule and in budget to the full satisfaction of the client.” Previously, Damen had worked extensively with Serco in the UK on a 29-vessel order completed in 2010. “We took the lessons we all learnt onboard for this contract. For instance, rather than having five project managers we have one to make sure all communications are streamlined efficiently. This is also the first regular contact Damen has had with the Royal Australian Navy and we hope that this positive experience means that the Navy will consider Damen in the future.” He adds: “We started talks in 2007 but ultimately I think DMS Maritime

chose Damen because of our ability to have all of the different types of vessels under one form of contract. During the tendering process we were able to get together with our product groups and give a very fast response and support DMS throughout the entire tender process with our project engineers, research and finance people.

Flagship project leads to global growth for TWMA More than 100 jobs created in the UK and Middle East TWMA, the leader in integrated drilling services and environmental solutions, today announces a significant contract win for Zakum Development Company’s (ZADCO) flagship UZ 750 Project at Abu Dhabi’s Upper Zakum field, the fourth largest oilfield in the world. Commencing in December 2012, the contract, worth up to 20 million USD, will see TWMA design,

commission and operate an advanced solids control and fluid recovery system for the artificial islands project - the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates. The contract is for a period of five years with two one-year extension options. Over the course of the project TWMA will deliver a range of specialist drilling services, including the handling, transfer, storage and treatment of both oil based and water based drill cuttings. On winning the contract, TWMA sales director Rob O’Neill said:

“Our cuttings handling solutions are leading the way in the field of drilling, making us the ideal partner for ZADCO on a project that has the potential to redefine oil production in the Middle East.” This latest success means that TWMA has accelerated its global growth plan and is investing a substantial sum in a new onshore support facility in Abu Dhabi, which is due to open in early 2013. The facility will include provision for onshore support services including repair, maintenance and construction, as well as office

accommodation and yard and warehousing space. As a result, a significant number of new positions will be created in the Middle East, including project managers, offshore supervisors, operators and support staff with a number of opportunities in Aberdeen also being created to provide associated support services. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us and we will work closely with ZADCO to develop and deliver a safe and efficient solution to meet and exceed the requirements of

Maritime Craft Services orders three more Damen Twin Axe Fast Crew Suppliers Maritime Craft Services (Clyde) Ltd has ordered three more Damen Twin Axe Fast Crew Suppliers just months after taking delivery of its first FCS 2610 catamarans. Based in Largs, Ayrshire (UK), MCS signed for three Twin Axes in November. The vessels will be delivered in the first quarter 2013. With more than 30 years of experience, the Scottish firm operates a 16-strong fleet of tugs and workboats internationally and already has several Damen vessels including Multi Cats, Shoalbusters and Dredge Helpers. MCS has been active in the offshore wind market for many years but decided to enter the crew transfer market in 2011. The company’s first Twin Axe FCS 2610, MCS Sirocco was delivered in April this year and the second, MCS Pampero is awaiting a heavy lift carrier in Singapore and is due to arrive in Rotterdam before the end of the year. New Twin Axe standard Arjen van Elk, Damen Sales Manager North, West & South Europe, says that these latest two

MCS vessels are built according to the new “Damen standard” FCS 2610, which has evolved and is now outfitted with a larger wheelhouse and superstructure, providing more accommodation space than the first models. The Twin Axe design is a further development of Damen’s pioneering and highly successful Sea Axe concept. This unique hull form provides excellent seakeeping behaviour and means that the vessel can travel at full speed (26 knots), while still providing a safe and comfortable ride for the crew. The vessel can easily handle 2.5 m significant wave heights, without losing any performance and extensive tests have proven that

Damen is the only manufacturer of this type of catamaran, which was developed in close cooperation with the Delft University of Technology and other scientific research institutes. Although the vessel has been eagerly adopted by the offshore wind industry, the vessel is suitable in multiple roles and provides a very stable platform for diving support for instance. It can easily be converted back into a basic crew supplier overnight.

“Globally, our business is going from strength to strength. With recent successes in the US and UK we very much see our relationship with ZADCO as the basis for the future growth of our market leading services in the Middle East, underpinning our commitment to the region.”

the vessel reduces bow slamming entirely under certain conditions. Offshore Wind standard Introduced to the market in June 2011, the Damen Twin Axe Fast Crew Supplier 2610 is already establishing itself as “the industry standard” in the offshore wind industry when it comes to a number of maintenance tasks. Damen was delighted when a major wind turbine manufacturer recently put out a tender requiring that companies deploy Twin Axe vessels when handling its turbines.

MacLean Electrical Group’s Aberdeen oil & gas division celebrates successful year with Shell contract MacLean Electrical Group’s Aberdeen business, which services the UK offshore operators and their contractors with electrical products and cables, has secured a new multi-million pound long-term supply agreement with Shell U.K. The MacLean Group has a long history of supplying Shell UK, and the contract is for five years with a further two-year option. The MacLean Group will provide Shell’s UK business with a wide range of electrical product including those for hazardous areas and harsh environments, to fulfil all the maintenance, repair and operational requirements for their offshore and onshore exploration and process facilities in the UK. The Shell contract rounds off a very successful year for the group’s Aberdeen business, which has continued to surpass growth expectations with awards of several major supply agreements and extensions to existing agreements with an estimated total value in excess of £80,000,000. During November a very significant agreement award was made to the Group by a large U.K. based chemical company covering a similar range of products to those outlined above. The company has been the leading UK oil & gas industry Maintenance,

Repair and Operations supplier of electrical products and cables for several years due to its investment in people, systems and facilities, with strong support from its community of manufacturers. The Altens-based facility, which includes warehouses, hazardous area licensed workshop facilities and the latest IT systems and E-trading capability, has benefitted from a multi-million pound investment in inventory this year and a further £5,000,000 investment is planned in 2013 to accommodate anticipated growth. The workforce in Aberdeen has increased in 2012 by 15%, and the business unit anticipates recruiting further additional personnel in the year ahead. Group Managing Director Donnie MacLean said: “We are delighted with the success of our Aberdeen business which is down to the hard work, dedication and loyalty of our team. “Our experienced staff, continuing investment in inventory, systems and facilities and excellent manufacturer support has ensured

we remain at the forefront of our markets. “Our clients demand a supply chain partner with knowledge and experience, where service and integrity is in-built, enabling them to minimise costs and cut supplier management time. They want attention to detail, product availability, timely provision of critical documentation and a robust and secure partner that has a clear focus on their business needs. Our team in Aberdeen provides all that and more.” The success of the Aberdeen business reflects a healthy year overall for the Dingwallheadquartered MacLean Electrical Group. In addition to success in the U.K., the group has seen major awards recently for several global newbuild projects, from LNG plants in Australia to projects offshore and onshore USA and Europe, further enhancing its international standing and ability to work on the world’s most high profile projects. After considerable investment over the last two years in new facilities for the group’s Australian business and U.K. External Lighting Hub in Cumbernauld, plans are now being made for further investment to accommodate growth in the Australian market. Earlier this year the group, through its wholly owned Australian business JT Day Pty Ltd, announced it had secured two frame agreement awards to provide cables, cable glands and electrical bulk materials for the Wheatstone LNG Project, one of Australia’s largest resource projects involving the construction of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains and a domestic gas plant. It has also worked on several other LNG contracts in Australia.

This time: Laura Bais. 1. Please introduce yourself I am Laura Bais, 23 years old. I was born and raised in Den Helder, Noord-Holland. At present I am in my last year of study for a bachelor degree in Human Resource Management at the Hogeschool Inholland, Alkmaar. 2. What does your home situation look like? I have a small apartment in downtown Den Helder where I live by myself. When I have finished my study and work full time, I am planning to save and find a bigger apartment where I can make a real home for myself. 3. What is your current position and where is your stand? I have a part-time position as a Recruitment Consultant for Peterson SBS Recruitment. We have three offices, one in Singapore, one in Aberdeen and the one I am working at based in Den Helder. 4. What are your daily activities? My day to day activities consist mainly of finding professionals for internal and external clients within the Oil and Gas Industry. Our team consists of our manager and four enthusiastic consultants and together we strive to make Peterson SBS Recruitment a recognised company whose main aim lies in finding the right candidate for the right position. I am also involved in several research projects within the company. 5. How did you end up in the offshore industry? To be honest it was purely by accident that I attained an internship at Peterson SBS. I liked it so much that I hoped to get a position within the company. You can imagine my joy when I was offered the job with Peterson SBS Recruitment. 6.How long have you been working in the offshore industry? Since the summer of 2012 I commenced my career in the offshore industry with Peterson SBS. This is the first job where I am able to put to practice all that I have studied so far. 7. Tell us about your dreams! I would like to keep working for Peterson SBS Recruitment and hope that my enthusiasm and talents will bring me the

experiences and get me to places I would maybe otherwise not get. It would be a dream to work in another country for a period of time. Peterson SBS is situated in 60 countries worldwide so the odds are in my favour! Another dream of mine is to also spend some of my time travelling to countries like Uganda or Ghana working as a volunteer with poor and needy children and make a change. 8. With whom would you like to trade places with? If I could I would like to trade places with Heidi Baker; she lives in Mozambique active in mission and relief work. She is active in many projects like for example realising orphanages for the poor. For the young children she takes care of she is known as “Mamma”. To me she is a humble leader whose life is dedicated to helping others. 9. How do you spend your leisure time? I like to spend time with family and friends. I love being an auntie to my nieces and nephews and have fun with them! Going to the gym to stay fit is something I try to do as often as I can. I go to church on a weekly bases and am involved in the church’s activities. Other than that I like the usual stuff: shopping, going out and having fun. 10. Do you keep a track of the news? If so, which item, national or regional, has had the greatest impact on you last month? The item that has had the most effect on me recently is the news that the study funds for young people will be revised in such a way that it will be limiting their possibilities. The political parties VVD and PVDA want to cut the basic funding. It is thanks to this basic fund that I was able to get my education and I wish that for all young people in the future. 11. What is your motto in life? Always look at the bright side of life and enjoy!

DNV anchors graduate commitment with launch of UK scheme DNV, the multinational provider of risk management and sustainability services, has established a UK graduate programme to develop new talent in the energy and maritime industries. DNV has welcomed 14 graduates on the scheme this year with plans already in place for a similar intake again in 2013. The two year programme gives graduates an insight to the many areas in which DNV operates and the diversity of services provided by the independent organisation. The scheme offers flexibility for graduates to experience different industries and tailor their own career path. Graduates spend four six month blocks in different teams within DNV to gain broad experience of the company and the disciplines they want to gain expertise in. This gives candidates the chance to work in offices across the UK network. There is also the opportunity to travel around the world on international projects. Nitesh Amin joined the DNV graduate scheme after graduating from the University of Sheffield. Currently based in the London performance forecasting team, Nitesh is enjoying the experiences and opportunities that the programme offers: “I am part of a team that provides risk analysis for some of the most complex oil and gas processes. It is very exciting and varied, and I’m already involved in working

on international projects across different types of assets from onshore to offshore facilities. “I have a formal mentor to guide me but the entire team have become mentors to me because they are very supportive and, as a result, I’m learning from everyone I work with. There are many years of experience around me which is helping me develop my career as an engineer. DNV provide challenges and a support structure so that I can be the best engineer possible.” Throughout the programme, graduates have support from experienced mentors in DNV. The company has supported graduate recruitment for a number of years, and has formalised its commitment with the launch of the dedicated scheme. Christine Maidment, Human Resources Manager DNV UK, said: “It is vitally important to get fresh talent in the industry to ensure the energy and maritime sectors continue to thrive. Our new UK graduate scheme aims to continue the lifeblood of our organisation and graduates bring a valuable new take on the industry and projects. It also helps for us to raise our profile in UK universities as students may know about major operators but don’t necessarily realise the wealth of opportunities at DNV.

OilCareers.com, the world’s largest online dedicated oil and gas job board, has launched the OilCareers. com iPhone app in response to a global surge in the number of mobile phone and tablet users who access the internet. In the past year alone, the organisation has seen mobile traffic more than double. This increase is in line with research conducted by the Internet Advertising Bureau UK (IAB), which indicates 69% of UK consumers expect their mobile usage to increase dramatically by 2015. The same research shows that UK consumers use their mobile phone more frequently to go online than to call or text, with smartphone penetration continuing to increase. Use of tablet devices is also growing with 35% of tablet owners in the UK

using the technology on a daily basis. This is similarly reflected in the US market with 59% using their mobile to go online as opposed to other actions, and 31% of tablet owners using them every day. The new OilCareers.com app, free to download from the iTunes store, was developed after mobile traffic dramatically increased from seven percent to 17.3% of the organisation’s total traffic, equating to more than 1.6million visits in the past year. While the app has been designed for iPhone, it greatly enhances the existing OilCareers.com website which tablet owners and desktop computer users alike already find easy to access and navigate. Mark Guest, OilCareers.com managing director, said: “As the world’s most popular oil and gas recruitment site, we’ve spent years analysing trends in the job hunting process and with the market moving to internet mobile use, this new app comes as a

powerful tool for any job seeker. “The worldwide demand for skilled and talented people in oil and gas is expected to continue to increase. With a rising proportion of the global population using mobiles and tablets to access the Internet, it’s vital that those in the industry respond accordingly and find innovative ways to help match the top talent with job opportunities that help to ensure the sustainability of the energy sector globally.” Product manager for OilCareers. com, Julie Gellatly, added: “The new app – which can be accessed anywhere – provides job seekers with access to up to 20,000 of the most sought after positions in the oil and gas industry . Users will benefit from access to functions such as searching jobs by keywords, location and job type, browsing jobs, reading job descriptions, as well as having the option to save their favoured jobs, then emailing them to their own inbox.”

“We aim to train the best candidates through the scheme, who will become part of DNV’s core of technical experts and potential future leaders within the organisation. The graduate scheme offers training, mentoring, networking and job rotation opportunities to provide unique experience for graduate development.”
