Promising newcomer SeaZip awards StarIPS contract to MirTac

Jumbo transports largest tunnel boring machine ‘Bertha’

Newcomer and offshore service specialist SeaZip Offshore Service selects MirTac and StarIPS to support fleet management for its sophisticated new build offshore service vessels. The contract includes StarIPS software and related implementation services such as database set-up, procedures implementation and related training and consultancy. The software will include maintenance, purchasing, vessel administration, QHSE management and document control.

Mv Fairpartner will commence discharging the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever made at the port of Seattle. The tunnel boring machine has been built

by Hitachi Zosen Corporation and loaded at Osaka, Japan.

It consists of total 48 pieces weighing 7.777 metric tons and measuring 31.606 cubic meters.

The heaviest item is close to 900 metric tons.

In the near future the newlyconstructed ‘Twin Axe’ catamaran ships will be deployed in the completion stage of a large-scale wind farm on the North Sea, 90 km north-west of the island of Borkum. They distinguish themselves due to their speed and maximum seaworthiness which, combined with economical fuel consumption and a high degree of stability, enables them to sail in rough weather conditions too. While primarily built for the purpose of transporting personnel, the ships can also transport small quantities of freight. SeaZip Offshore Service is anticipating the trend of devising wind farms at locations far from the coast and at ever-greater depths.

Gas production has begun from the Rhyl gas field in Morecambe Bay, helping to secure the future of 400 North West jobs and boost energy security for the UK.

The Rhyl field, located 39km off the coast of Barrow, was first discovered in 2009 and is wholly owned and operated

by Centrica Energy. Gas from Rhyl will be produced through Centrica Energy’s existing North Morecambe platform, then come onshore to its Barrow terminal complex by pipeline for processing.

This is the first new field to be brought on stream in the region

for ten years and represents an important milestone in extending the life of Centrica’s Morecambe Bay operations, taking production well beyond 2020. Earlier this year additional appraisal drilling on the Rhyl reservoir confirmed that it extended further than originally anticipated.

Mike Astell, Centrica Energy’s Regional Director for the East Irish Sea said: “This is incredibly exciting news for everyone involved because it marks another lease of life for the Morecambe Bay area, securing energy for the UK and jobs for the local area.”

SeaMar orders Multipurpose Offshore Support Vessel at Shipyard De Hoop SeaMar Subsea BV has entered into a contract with Shipyard De Hoop for the construction of a Multipurpose Offshore Support Vessel. Custom designed to stringent environmental control, the diesel electric powered 65metre vessel will be constructed for low fuel consumption, clean ship / green passport / SPS2008 and high comfort class notation, making it the first offshore vessel to be built in the Netherlands to this specification.

The DP2 class vessel provides ergonomically designed accommodation for a total of 52 personnel in single or double cabins, complete with conference rooms, working offices, recreation rooms and a gymnasium. The vessel will be manned and operated from the Netherlands, sailing under the Dutch Flag and registered in Den Helder.

The vessel’s main propulsion system consists of two 900kW azimuth thrusters at the stern and two bow thrusters, one of which is a 600kW tunnel thruster and the other a 400kW retractable azimuthing thruster. Four 995kW generators, with caterpillar C32 prime movers, power all of the

above.

The state of the art multipurpose OSV will be completed and delivered in the second quarter of 2014. It incorporates several innovative design features, which will provide support to the offshore oil & gas and renewables markets.

These features include a long jib length crane, triple moon pools, large under deck workshops and a four point mooring system. The vessel provides a total working deck space of 500m2 at a rated load of 5t/m2. In addition to this, the deck is strengthened locally at the stern to accommodate a 20t A-frame and around the moon pool where it is increased to a loading of 60t/m2.

MirTac wins software contract Vikoma Launches Major New Offshore Oil with BAM International 9 April 2013. BAM International has awarded MirTac the contract to (re)organize the documentation and activities related to maintenance, critical equipment, spare parts, quality and safety management into the Star IPS fleet management system. The contract comprises 12 units: the jack-up barge IB-909, 9 work boats, a newbuild crane barge and a newbuild self elevating platform.

All equipment documentation, purchase and maintenance operations will be translated into procedures, job instructions, maintenance schedules, expiry reports, equipment trees to facilitate onboard processes and enhance operational insight.

All relevant information will be readily available to both crew onboard and staff in the office.

Star software modules will entail: Maintenance, Purchasing, QHSE, Vessel Administration, Docking.

The implementation started last month.

Recovery Solution at Spillcon 2013

Oil pollution and environmental technology company, Vikoma International Limited, has unveiled the latest addition to its range of class-leading offshore oil pollution recovery systems.

The OPRS 300 (Oil Pollution Recovery System) is based upon patented oil-attracting discs which have been proven to collect up to 300 m3 per hour of oil and can work across oils with viscosities ranging from 1 to 1 million cSt.

The OPRS 300 comprises of a floating skimmer head which utilises Vikoma’s tufted disc technology combined with both an on-board recovered oil discharge pump and thrusters for manoeuvrability. The unit is operated by a hand held remote control console.

Damen Shipyards Cape Town contracted for Maintenance & Repair of DAFF Fleet Maintenance & repair of 2 Research Vessels and 4 Patrol Vessels The South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has assigned Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT, part of Damen Shipyards Group) to get its fleet of Fisheries Research Vessels and Fisheries Protection & Surveillance Vessels operational as soon as possible. The scope of work includes repair works and ongoing maintenance.

The DAFF Fleet currently consists of six vessels, including the 83m Offshore Patrol Vessel ‘Sarah Baartman’ and the 78m Research Vessel ‘Africana’. A DAFF spokesman said earlier that there is an immediate and urgent focus to get both these vessels operational again.

Like the Sarah Baartman (a Damen OPV 8313, built in 2005), the other three patrol vessels are also of Damen design. The ‘Lilian Ngoyi’, ‘Ruth First’ and ‘Victoria Mxenge’ are of the Damen Stan Patrol 4708 type and were built from 2004 to 2006 in Cape Town. They are used as Fisheries Protection &

Surveillance Vessels to protect South Africa’s EEZ from illegal fishing.

The two Fisheries Research Vessels, the 43m ´Ellen Khuzwayo´ (built 2007 in Cape Town) and the 30-year old Africana, will soon be ready to resume their tasks. These comprise research programmes on how to maintain and restore the productive capacity and biodiversity of South Africa´s marine environment. The programmes are part of DAFF´s policy to protect human life and promote the conservation and sustainable use of marine living resource.

Formaco Forgings & Castings has been working exclusively with FMA - Forgiatura Moderna Arese, the Italian manufacturer of large forged parts, for many years.

In most cases it concerns enormous forgings, such as seamless forged rings and shafts for, among others, the Dutch shipbuilding industry. The last delivery received from FMA by Formaco was very special: massive forged rings made from excellent weld able steel in alloy S 460 material, destined for the many pivotal points in the largest lifting vessel ever built to this date: the ‘Pieter Schelte’. The ship was designed and built for demounting oil rigs and because colossal weight has up to 48,000 tons lifting capacity, which must be sustained when lifting an entire oil platform, put high demands on the mechanical components of the lifting mechanism. “This indeed involves a huge task for Formaco. Our rings are in all the pivot points of the hoisting arms of this ship; totalling up to 30 trucks full of tempered steel forgings that were transported from FMA’s location in Arese, Italy.

But before our client, the designer and buyer Allseas Engineering Delft, bought the material, we first had to perform a series of welding and other techniques to the material, such as the notch impact value with the CTOD - Crack Tip Opening Displacement test.

1. Please introduce yourself My name is Tim Lustig, 26 years old and i’m born and raised in Den Helder, and i still live there.

2. What does your home situation look like?

I still live at my parental house but i am planning to buy a house at the end of this year.

I would like to trade places with nobody, i am happy now so why would i change that?

3. What is your current position and where is your stand?

Currently i’m working at the Noble Ronald Hoope as a Roughneck, we are now drilling a well for Gaz de France at the english sector but soon we go back to dutch waters again.

8. How do you spend your leisure time?

My leisure time i spend by going out for diner and a drink with my girlfriend, playing football, go out with my friends, travelling and visiting football matches.

5. How did you end up in the offshore industry?

Before i started in the Offshore i was in the Royal Dutch Navy

Its sister vessel, the Artemis, was equipped with a similar set. These ships can lower an entire ladder structure to pry loose rocky bottoms with a cutter head and to suck all up

with huge centrifugal pumps. It was once again our partner FMA Italy that performed the forging work for this project and that will also execute the next set under our supervision. There are liners as duplex bushings and special welding coatings that come from one of our other partners on these machined-finished shafts. We can thus interconnect our entire supply network; so one-stop shopping for our customers, whether it’s for smaller products, or products of enormous dimensions.

Job related i hope to grow up in the drilling business because it’s very interesting and i am enjoying to work in this industry.

4. What are your daily activities?

As a roughneck you are working on the drill floor and the main tasks are making the connections of the drill pipes, keep an eye on the shakers and after finished drilling a section of the well run the casing.

But also rig up high pressure lines for pressure testing, doing the maintenance on the equipment and tools that we use and all kind of other things that has to do with drilling a well.

With such a mill there are, of course, the necessary peripherals for such large forged parts: a 100-ton manipulator, heavy cranes and extensive heat treatment facilities. It involves an investment of approximately € 20 to 25 million.

The continuing global demand for larger forgings for the ever larger oil tankers, container ships and cargo vessels, makes this investment for the company vital to its leading position in the market of forging.

I keep track on the news and the news that had the greatest impact last month was about the Boston bombings.

10. What is your motto in life?

My motto in life is seize the day, tomorrow can be totally different.

For the next edition i want to nominate my good friend Buddy Tiggelers, because when i told him about this the first thing he asked was “Where can i subscribe for the next edition” haha.

Sail Den Helder beleven vanaf het water De organisatie van Sail Den Helder 2013 biedt bedrijven en instellingen de gelegenheid om met hun relaties aan boord van speciaal gecharterde schepen alle 'actieve' gebeurtenissen tijdens het evenement bij te wonen. Vanaf het water uiteraard!

Sail Den Helder 2013 begint met een ongekend schouwspel op 20 juni 2013. Dan zullen alle deelnemende Tall Ships tot in de loop van de middag op de Rede van Texel voor anker liggen.

De schepen zullen eenzelfde ankerformatie vormen als in de 17e eeuw, toen de schepen van de VOC zich hier verzamelden om gezamenlijk naar de Oost en de West te varen. De Tall Ships varen echter nu niet uit maar zullen die middag één voor één de haven binnen varen.

De voor anker liggende zeilschepen zullen een fantastische aanblik geven en de organisatie van Sail Den Helder 2013 stelt bedrijven en organisaties (verenigingen, businessclubs) en andere groepen bezoekers graag in staat om in een eigen charterschip langs die rij schepen te varen.

Ook in de dagen dat de Tall Ships zijn afgemeerd in de haven is er de mogelijkheid om met relaties en medewerkers op de charterschepen langs de afgemeerde vloot te varen en de prachtige schepen vanaf het water te bewonderen. Bovendien betekent zo'n dagdeel varen met “jouw groep” voor de meeste deelnemers een fantastische ervaring. Men kan ongestoord

genieten van de sprankelende sfeer tijdens Sail Den Helder 2013.

Acht dagdelen Voor groepen, verenigingen, organisaties, instellingen en bedrijven zijn er – verspreid over de vier dagen van Sail Den Helder – in totaal acht dagdelen beschikbaar per deelnemend charterschip. Degene die namens het bedrijf etc. deze vaartochten organiseert, kan uit de beschikbare schepen – zie het kaderstukje – een keus maken. De dagdelen lopen ruwweg van ca. 10.30-15.00 (waarbij men een lunchbuffet kan boeken) en van circa 17.00-22.00 uur waarbij een dinerbuffet kan worden bijgeboekt.

“De boekingen lopen via het projectbureau www.saildenhelder. nl/relatieschepen,” zegt Saildirecteur Jeannette BlijdorpJonker. Dit is gedaan om het overzicht te kunnen bewaren en om aan de deelnemers speciale VIP-faciliteiten te bieden. Hier hoort onder andere een speciale parkeervergunning voor de marinehaven bij.

“Het is wel zo, dat we om praktische redenen er voor gekozen hebben om alle schepen te laten bedienen door één cateraar”, aldus mevrouw Blijdorp.

Wie een schip reserveert, kan rechtstreeks afspraken maken met die 'culinaire partner' (De Kampanje in Den Helder) over de buffetsamenstelling.

Parade of Sail Op zondag 23 juni gaat de vloot weer naar buiten. Ook nu zullen al deze schepen met hun masten en zeilen op het Marsdiep de tijden van de VOC doen herleven.

Deze Parade of Sail begint op zondagmiddag vanaf circa 16.00 uur. Voor het bijwonen van de Parade of Sail kan men óók een schip charteren.

En dan is er nog een heel bijzondere individuele vaartocht van vier dagen. Mevrouw Blijdorp: “Wie dat wil, kan als trainee aanmonsteren op het Franse opleidingsschip Bélèm. Zowel voor de heenreis vanuit Cherbourg naar Den Helder en voor de terugreis naar Brest. Wij zorgen dat je per bus wordt weggebracht en weer thuiskomt”.

Feestelijke opening projectbureau Onder de klanken van de Sea Side Jazzband stroomden de gasten binnen in het projectbureau van Sail Den Helder, dat sinds begin januari 2013 gevestigd is op Willemsoord 29. De officiële opening werd verricht door burgemeester Koen Schuiling, met de overhandiging van een scheepsmodel dat hij vorig jaar ontving van de Götheborg. Het model is in bruikleen gegeven aan het projectbureau.

Wat speelt er zich af in gesloten watersystemen?

Een toelichting op de gevolgen van corrosie, scaling en sediment.

Water en de Offshore Industrie zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Water is van onmisbaar belang en wordt, vanwege haar bijzondere fysische en chemische kenmerken, voor vele doeleinden gebruikt. Het aantal systemen met water op een platform is zeer divers; potable water, service water, fire fighting systems, stoomketels, overboard water, grey water, black water, demiwater etc. Stuk voor stuk watervoerende systemen met elk een eigen specifiek gebruik en doel.

Hiernaast vind je op een platform ook gesloten circulerende “cooling” en “heating” systemen, waarbij water wordt gebruikt voor het transporteren van warmte.

Dit lijkt simpel, maar er komen veel aspecten bij kijken om dergelijke systemen goed te laten functioneren. Er zijn verschillende chemische en fysische processen die de leidingen en warmtewisselaars kunnen aantasten, de warmteoverdracht kunnen beperken of systemen zelfs volledig kunnen laten verstoppen. Een juiste waterbehandeling is daarom van zeer groot belang. Corrosie-expert Roby Kalsbeek (oud-eigenaresse van Kalsbeek BV) licht een aantal van deze processen en waterbehandelingstechnieken toe.

Chemische en fysische processen in gesloten systemen Corrosie is elke ongewenste fysische en/of chemische interactie tussen een metaal en zijn omgeving, met een verandering van de eigenschappen van dat metaal als gevolg. Een dergelijke interactie kan leiden tot een gedeeltelijke of zelfs gehele destructie van het metaal. De meest voorkomende corrosievorm in (de natte omgeving) van gesloten systemen bestaat uit oxidatie. Dit is een reactie met zuurstof waarbij water een rol speelt.

Naast zuurstofcorrosie mogen andere corrosievormen niet vergeten worden. Algemene corrosie (onder invloed van het watermilieu), erosie-corrosie (onder

invloed van stromingssnelheid en werveling van water) en galvanische corrosie (onder invloed van potentiaalverschillen) zijn vaak voorkomende corrosievormen, die soms in een zeer mild milieu al optreden en tot grote schade kunnen leiden.

Scaling is de vorming van vaste stoffen uit chemische reacties in of met het water en die zich ergens in het circuit vasthechten aan het oppervlak. Scaling van kalk of corrosieproducten komt het meeste voor in gesloten systemen. Dergelijke afzettingen zijn erg isolerend, waardoor de warmteoverdracht sterk verminderd (afb. 1). Uiteindelijk kan het leiden tot verstoppingen, breuk door warmtestuwingen in de onderliggende/naastliggende materialen of tot het optreden van galvanische corrosie. Meestal is scaling te vinden op die plekken waar de meeste warmteoverdracht plaatsvindt en/of op nauwe doorlaten.

Sediment is een hoeveelheid vaste stof in het water, welke zich echter niet - zoals bij scaling - aan de heetste delen hecht, maar welke met het water mee circuleert en/ of neerzakt op plaatsen met de minste stroming. Voorbeelden zijn zand, corrosieproduct en in koelere systemen ook biologisch materiaal. Sediment veroorzaakt verstoppingen en kan zelfs galvanische corrosie veroorzaken.

Deze corrosievorm wordt vaak pas ontdekt als het te laat is (bij lekkage) en kan daardoor tot kostbare schade leiden.

Waterbehandelingstechnieken Om bovengenoemde processen te beheersen kunnen diverse chemische of apparatieve waterbehandelingstechnieken worden toegepast. Een toelichting op de meest voorkomende technieken: Voorbehandeling van suppletiewater is noodzakelijk als blijkt dat de kwaliteit van het suppletiewater tot problemen gaat leiden in de betreffende installatie. Door de analyse van het suppletiewater (afb. 2) te combineren met de aanwezige kennis over de installatie wordt duidelijk welke voorbehandeling nodig is. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn o.a. ontharding (tegen kalk), filtratie (om sediment te voorkomen) en dosering (om corrosie of biologische groei te voorkomen).

Inhibitor toevoegen aan het systeemwater Ondanks eventuele voorbehandeling van het suppletiewater kunnen er in de installatie chemische en/of fysische processen plaatsvinden waardoor het nodig kan blijven om inhibitoren aan het circulatiewater toe te voegen. Dit kunnen corrosie-remmende inhibitoren zijn en/of complexerende middelen om afzettingen van kalk of corrosieproducten te voorkomen of te verwijderen. Om vast te stellen of en zo ja, welke inhibitoren nodig zijn dienen er watermonsters geanalyseerd te worden van het suppletie- en installatiewater. Tevens dient exact bekend te zijn hoe de installatie is opgebouwd en uit welke materialen de installatie waterzijdig bestaat.

Slibstreamfilters Afzetting en slib dienen verwijderd te worden voor een probleemloos functioneren van de installatie.

Soms volstaat het uitspoelen van een installatie onder druk, echter zorgt dit in de meeste gevallen niet voor voldoende resultaat.

Een oplossing kan dan gevonden worden in de inbouw van één of meerdere slibstreamfilters, al dan niet gecombineerd met een complexerende (reinigende) inhibitor. Het installatiewater wordt in deelstroom over de filters gevoerd, zodat tijdens bedrijf de installatie gereinigd wordt.

De praktijk Veel voorkomende problemen in de praktijk zijn: Door scaling is het rendement van warmtewisselaars (afb. 3) niet meer toereikend en dient deze chemisch gereinigd te worden.

Corrosie heeft de leidingen dermate aangetast dat lekkages ontstaan waardoor leidingen vervangen dienen te worden.

Sediment en corrosie in het systeem leiden tot verstopping waardoor het systeem chemisch gereinigd moet worden.

Problemen kunnen ook ontstaan doordat niet de juiste waterbehandelingstechniek wordt gekozen of doordat deze onvoldoende wordt beheerd. Met als gevolg dat systemen niet meer goed of soms helemaal niet meer werken en dat productieprocessen negatief beïnvloed worden.

Het spreekt voor zich dat beheer en onderhoud uitgevoerd

moet worden om gesloten circulerende systemen goed te laten functioneren. Hierbij is een grote rol weggelegd voor de waterbehandeling. Zowel in de keuze van de technieken als in het controleren van de effecten hiervan.

Het gebruik van chemicaliën kan beperkt worden door op basis van deskundige analyses te doseren.

Onnodig hoge doseringen worden voorkomen en er wordt juist en tijdig bij gedoseerd op basis van de werkelijke behoefte. Dit heeft een gunstig effect op de milieubelasting en voorkomt onnodig hoge kosten. Voldoende aandacht voor waterbehandeling, analyse en controle verhoogt het rendement van een systeem en zorgt voor een langere levensduur.

Amarcon and GTT signs cooperation agreement on sloshing prevention technology Amarcon and GTT will develop technology that enhances the quality of sloshing measurement and prediction for LNG carriers Amarcon, a member of the ABB group, announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement with GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) to market and further develop a forecasting and advice software system for sloshing prevention onboard LNG carriers. The agreement was signed at the LNG17 Conference & Exhibition in Houston,US. In the coming years, a significant growth in the long distance transport of LNG is expected.

Consequently, a considerable number of new build LNG carriers will come into the market. It is clear that the safe operation of these vessels will be imperative.

To respond to this demand, last year Amarcon and GTT already announced the joint effort on development of sloshing prevention software for LNG Carriers. The sloshing prevention

is an advanced module within Amarcon’s OCTOPUS advisory suite that will forecast and advise the crew with optimum route to achieve time savings while preventing risk for sloshing.

Sloshing prevention will greatly boost the LNG tanker’s safe conditions and optimize the operational availability of the ships.

“We are looking forward on working together with GTT in order to serve LNG carriers with a state of the art onboard sloshing advice,

which will help crews to choose the route, speed and course with least risk for sloshing, so time savings can be achieved and damage to the LNG membrane tanks can be prevented. Also in the offshore LNG, we see large potential and need for this kind monitoring and advisory systems as a part of an asset management program” Leon, Adegeest, General Manager of Amarcon said.

RTH Lubbers secures new longNorth Star announce £63million BP contract distance routes to supply oil and gas industry clients and receives leading industry accreditation North Star Shipping, a division of the family-owned global shipping and energy services firm The Craig Group, has been awarded a major contract with BP with a value of £63million.

The multi-service contract is for five years with a possible extension of five years and includes tanker assist, platform supply and emergency and response rescue vessels, all supporting BP’s operations in the North Sea.

Four vessels, with a possible fifth to be added are being contracted - the Grampian Talisker, Grampian Frontier, Grampian Conquest and Grampian Dee.

Callum Bruce, managing director of North Star, said: “The award of this contract strengthens our relationship with BP who we have worked with for over 25years.

We continue to invest heavily in our fleet which has cemented our position as the largest British wholly owned fleet engaged in the

UK offshore industry.”

Douglas Craig, chairman and managing director of the Craig Group, said: “Through continuous investment in our people, infrastructure and vessels, we are demonstrating our commitment to meeting the needs of clients with a service that is driven by safety and quality.”

Mark Hardie, BP’s UK Logistics Infrastructure Manager, said: “This major award is the latest example of BP executing its long term marine strategy to support its UK offshore operations. BP has enjoyed a long and successful working relationship with North Star which has provided us with the confidence to widen and extend the service they provide to our business.”

Oil and gas logistics specialist RTH Lubbers has secured important new haulage routes in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, expanding its network and building closer ties with key customers.

The firm, which is has its main operations base in Aberdeen, Newcastle and Great Yarmouth has seen an upsurge in international traffic in recent months and has responded by developing its network of routes in regions that have traditionally proved difficult to service such as south west Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The new routes will see RTH Lubbers trucks travel to destinations in Turkey, Tunisia, Las Palmas (in the Canaries), Malta, Iraq, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The firm’s international credentials have been further strengthened after Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) awarded RTH Lubbers an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) accreditation, which covers customs simplifications, security and safety.

AEO is granted to businesses that satisfy strict customs criteria to demonstrate consistent quality, compliance and trustworthiness, as well as showing extremely high standards of security and safety, in the international supply chain.

Awarded by HMRC and backed by the European Union, AEO is recognised throughout the EU and

internationally.

RTH Lubbers Group director, Stuart Ferguson, added: “These new routes, some of them unique within the oil and gas industry, highlight not only the current strength of RTH Lubbers but the wider energy sector as a whole, where demand is growing extremely quickly.”

Mr Ferguson added: “Gaining AEO accreditation comes on the back of a strong period of business growth for us. A great deal of work has been put into gaining the AEO accreditation by our Sales Manager Nick Latham, so we can pass these benefits onto our customer base” “Given our core market is oil and gas it is very rare that our customers in Aberdeen do not have interests overseas. The benefits of being AEO accredited, includes faster processing through international customs formalities and this means we will be able to ensure the best possible service to our customers as we continue to expand these international routes.”

Approximately half the company’s UK workforce of 90 is located in Aberdeen, with the rest based at its premises in Newcastle and Great Yarmouth, which are also covered by the AEO Accreditation.

AEO Accreditation has also been awarded to Lubbers Transport Group in two locations in Holland, Velsen – Noord and Schoonbeek.

RTH Lubbers will carry out many large-scale projects in the coming months servicing many of the industry’s key operators and service companies with assets in the region.

Stuart Ferguson added: “We have built a number of significant relationships with companies that operate in these regions and it is clear this is a promising growth area for our business.”

“We were challenged to demonstrate our capability to deliver on these complex, specialist logistical operations and we have been able to meet the demands of our customers which have led to these significant new business opportunities.”

RTH Lubbers has been investing heavily in its operations over the past 12 months with £2.8million spent on expanding in its fleet of vehicles.

CAITHNESS CHAMBER FUNDS RETRAINING FOR SUBSEA SECTOR AT THE UNDERWATER CENTRE Former Dounreay employee lands ROV pilot technician job with Fugro The first graduate to come through the Fort Williambased subsea training facility, The Underwater Centre, as a result of a Caithness Chamber of Commerce-led funding initiative has already secured a job in the industry.

Kevin Macleod (30), of Caithness, who was working as an instrument technician with Johnson Controls at Dounreay until recently, has been taken on as an apprentice ROV pilot technician with Fugro, one of the world’s largest ROV operators.

He completed the three week ROV Pilot Technician course at The Underwater Centre after receiving funding as part of the ‘Make the Right Connections’ project, which aims to help find jobs for those affected by the decommissioning of the Dounreay nuclear facility.

The scheme is being led by Caithness Chamber of Commerce and is jointly funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) and Skills Development Scotland (SDS), to help assist local individuals and businesses to make the transition into new

and emerging jobs and markets, boosting skills and retaining jobs in the local area.

Kevin started his new role at Fugro this week and is hoping to return to The Underwater Centre for further training.

He said: “With the rundown and decommissioning of the Dounreay Nuclear Site and the offshore energy sector on the way up, it seemed like a natural progression for me to pursue a career which would involve some of the skills which I had learned in my time working at Dounreay.

“The training offered at The Underwater Centre was of a very high standard and I hope that my time spent there will help me in my new career.

“My new role at Fugro is as a trainee ROV pilot technician and

my planned career progression is to work my way up from this role to supervisor depending on opportunities within the company.

“Moving from the nuclear industry into the oil and gas sector was a big decision as it is a completely new role, but I am hopeful that I can adapt to the new scope of work and make the most of this opportunity.”

Fugro and The Underwater Centre have a long-standing partnership in place and more than 200 Fugro employees have been sent to the Centre for ROV pilot and technician training since 2007.

Steve Ham, The Underwater Centre General Manager, added: “The Dounreay Nuclear Site has been an incredibly important employer in the area and the ongoing decommissioning will lead to a lot of skilled personnel looking for alternative careers.

“The funding which is being made available for re-training will come as a welcome bonus for many who may not have had the financial

backing to make it possible otherwise.

“Kevin is a great example of how this type of scheme is working, having already started in his new job in the industry as a result of the training provided here at The Underwater Centre.”

Two other Dounreay workers, Charles Angus and Neal MacDonald, are currently training at The Underwater Centre and are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Kevin and pursue a career in the

subsea sector.

Trudy Morris, Chief Executive of Caithness Chamber of Commerce, added: “This programme is a great example of private and public sector partnership delivering real results on the ground.

“The programme is helping to secure jobs, assisting new business start-ups and business diversification and enabling the transition of individuals into new jobs and careers as demonstrated here.”

Zenith makes two key appointments Zenith Oilfield Technology has announced two new appointments to develop and support the company around the globe.

The positions have been selectively filled from within a loyal and capable team to align the company for continued growth following acquisition by Lufkin Industries last year.

Steve Beattie has been appointed as Zenith’s Eastern Hemisphere sales manager, a development of his previous role as regional manager for the Middle East. Euan Gray has also been challenged with increased responsibility, taking on the role of company financial

controller.

Following its acquisition, Zenith aims to further develop Lufkin’s complimentary technologies in the Eastern Hemisphere in addition to selling and supporting the Zenith product range. Mr Beattie will have sales responsibility for Lufkin Automation products in the region.

Mr Beattie became Zenith’s first employee in April 2004 and his new role will see him lead a team of 53 to drive sales in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia. He believes one of the biggest changes will be using Zenith’s foothold in the market to push sales of both Zenith and Lufkin products.

Mr Beattie said: “Our team has

been very successful in sales of Zenith technologies. The acquisition has challenged us with developing sales of Lufkin products as well. We now need to focus on sales and support of Zenith’s core products, the Lufkin Automation range, as well as championing the continual development and launch of new technologies for the industry. It’s all about multitasking.”

Mr Gray, who has been with Zenith for seven years, will now be responsible for directing, supervising and evaluating Zenith’s accounting team. He initially joined the company as a graduate accounts assistant before promotion to his previous position of management accountant. Mr Gray also obtained his CIMA qualification in his time with the company.

Speaking about his new role, Mr Gray said: “It is a huge responsibility at a very busy time.

Joining Zenith was the best thing I’ve ever done. The company gave me the opportunity to truly work up from the bottom and learn the trade - I was given the chance to develop here. Zenith is an energetic company with ambition to keep growing, and to stay successful we have to continue to come up with great pioneering ideas. Obviously this means spending, creating an on-going challenge for the accounts team.”

Greg Davie, general manager of Zenith, said: “Both Steve and Euan bring valuable experience to their new roles and I am confident their contribution will continue to push the company to the next level.”

SECRETARY OF STATE FOR SCOTLAND VISITS THE UNDERWATER CENTRE The Underwater Centre in Fort William yesterday (Tuesday, April 9) hosted a visit by the Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Moore MP, and former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber.

Mr Moore and Mr Kennedy took a tour of the Centre, its pier diving facility and onshore diving tank complex, meeting with key staff members who explained the work the Centre is involved in.

The visit was arranged as part of a series of engagements in Perthshire and the Highlands.

The Underwater Centre is a world-renowned subsea training and trials facility which operates in Fort William, Scotland.

The recent Oil and Gas Strategy announced by the UK government highlighted a future skills shortage as one of the key issues to be addressed. The Underwater Centre, as a UK based subsea training facility, focuses on developing some of those key skills.

A recent report by trade body Oil and Gas UK predicts investment of around £13billion in the sector in 2013 and the Centre is hoping to play a major role in supplying the competent, well trained staff to meet the demand.

The Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Moore said: “I was delighted to visit The Underwater Centre in Fort William with my colleague Charles Kennedy. It was particularly valuable to meet some of the students who are in training there.

“The Underwater Centre is a truly unique facility which emphasises that Scottish companies are at the cutting edge of world technology when it comes to providing support to the oil and gas sector.

“The UK Government through the Oil and Gas Strategy and our global influence wants to ensure that companies like The Underwater Centre are able to exploit the exciting opportunities available in the Oil and Gas Sector.”

Steve Ham, General Manager at The Underwater Centre, welcomed the visit by the Secretary of State for Scotland.

“We are pleased to have hosted a visit from Mr Moore and Mr Kennedy and had the opportunity to show them what is being done here at The Underwater Centre.

“We work very closely with organisations in the energy industry to tailor our courses to ensure we are providing a quality, skilled workforce which can meet the changing demands of this buoyant industry.”

The Underwater Centre was set up in the 1970s to provide commercial diver training and as an underwater trials facility. It provides training in both air and mixed gas (saturation) diving, certified by the Health & Safety Executive, giving graduates internationally recognised certifications. As well as the official qualifications, The Underwater Centre also offers training in the key subsea skills that industry really needs.

The Centre also provides

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) pilot technician training. The ROV courses give graduates considerable practical experience of flying inspection-class ROVs in an open-water, tidal environment, as well as taking their technical understanding and know-how and applying it to the repair and maintenance of ROVs.

All ROV pilot technician students are trained in the same subsea location as the commercial diving students are trained – a unique

approach which offers students valuable experience of subsea operations, further preparing them for offshore work.

The Centre provides the location, equipment, realistic experience and facilities to meet the trials and training needs of the subsea industry. It is located on the sheltered Loch Linnhe, with depths ranging from 4m to 150m, all within a mile and a half of the Centre’s secure private pier.
