Atlas first to be approved by ecitb Atlas first to be approved by ecitb for new course to reduce serious injuries and hydrocarbon releases. Atlas the leading international learning and skills provider, has announced the launch of an innovative new course that will help lead to improved safety and reductions in hydrocarbon releases in the oil and gas industry. The Atlas Mechanical Joint Integrity (MJI) e-learning course is the first to be approved by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), delivering up-to-date training for oil and gas workers operating in safety critical roles. It provides onshore and offshore workers of varying experience with the underpinning knowledge to safely carry out specialist critical bolting work. The course is designed to be a component of a larger suite of guidance, Mechanical Joint Integrity – Route to Competence, which was recently developed by Step Change in Safety, working with the ECITB. The e-learning component, developed by Atlas, supports the industry’s desire for ongoing performance development of workers to ensure competency in specialist critical bolting in order to conduct MJI operations to the highest standards. Hydrocarbon releases are potential precursors to major incidents, which is why Step Change in Safety is leading the industry commitment to reducing the number by 50% by the end of March 2013 – with the ultimate goal being zero releases. A large part of the work being done across the industry to meet this target is in ensuring the competency of workers who are making, breaking and maintaining pipeline joints.

operating in these safety critical roles and updating and refreshing the knowledge of trained personnel is recommended. Atlas’ e-learning course also supports workers by providing them with the knowledge they need to successfully complete the new ECITB MJI Technical Test, which is the industry’s route to assessing the competency of the worker. The MJI refresher course consists of six mandatory and three specialist modules on hydraulically torqued bolted connections, hydraulically tensioned bolted connections and hand torque bolted connections. levels of skilled personnel, allows employees to identify weaknesses in their current knowledge and skills prior to sitting the ECITB MJI Technical Test.

Tony Featherstone, Director of Operations at ECITB said: “It’s highly important for the future of the oil and gas industry that we continue to improve performance in the assembly and maintenance of mechanical joints, reducing incidents and accidents. Step Change in Safety has set the target of reducing hydrocarbon releases by 50% by 2013, and the new ECITB MJI Standard will help the industry meet that target by improving training and competence of the workforce. “We are delighted to approve Atlas as a new Training Provider for the ECITB. Their new MJI e-learning course supports best practice in the industry by providing existing, experienced workers with the relevant knowledge, updating them to the latest industry standard, which ensures the same high level of competency is set across the oil and gas sector.”

Atlas, CEO John Rowley (above) said: “Technicians and engineers are literally responsible for ensuring the integrity of the nuts and bolts that hold everything together including high pressure systems, pipework and structural support. It is critical that these key people are trained to the highest standards. The Atlas e-learning course provides workers with the knowledge to safely carry out specialist critical bolting. The course, which benefits all

“We have been working closely with the ECITB and are delighted to be the first training company to have our e-learning course approved by the industry statutory body and awarding organisation to improve the safety performance of such operations. This course is also relevant to employees across sectors including nuclear, downstream, renewables, onshore, offshore, power generation and construction.”

industry. Competence is more than just training – it’s the active demonstration of knowledge, skills and behaviour. The work being done by Step Change’s Competence Steering Group in areas such as mechanical joint integrity defines the competency standards that should be met by anyone carrying out mechanical joint operations, bolted and small bore tubing. Widespread adoption of these competency standards across industry will play a vital role if we are to meet out target of a 50% hydrocarbon release reduction.” Atlas is hosting a product launch event on Thursday 23rd August at their E-learning Centre, Aberdeen Energy Park with informative presentations from Blair Barclay, ECITB and Les Linklater of Step Change in Safety, on the new ECITB MJI Technical Training Standards and their importance to industry.

Wide range of expert speakers at Offshore Energy 2012 The OE2012 conference which runs parallel to the Offshore Energy exhibition on 23 & 24 October in the Amsterdam RAI features an international faculty of expert speakers. They will offer perspectives on new North Sea oil and gas discoveries, challenging hydrocarbons and future offshore vessel concepts. The sessions on renewable energy will address the challenges of an offshore grid and developments in wave & tidal energy. One of the confirmed speakers is John Best, Head of Sustainable Energy at James Fisher and Sons plc. John will speak in the session on future offshore wind turbine foundation needs.

His company has ample experience working for major wind farm developers. As the next generation of offshore wind farms will lie further offshore, new technology is needed to access waters between

60 and 100 meters deep. This depth is too great for turbines fixed to the seabed, but where wind speeds are consistently higher. It is hoped that developing the technology will increase global potential for offshore wind power, particularly after 2020, by which time many shallower sites will have been developed. Jumbo Offshore's Jack Spaan, Manager Projects is also among the confirmed speakers. Last year Jack presented on advancements in deepwater installation capabilities. This year, Jack will provide insight into Jumbo's work for Chevron's Gorgon project in West-Australia. Jumbo was awarded a contract for its HLV Jubilee to work in

Australia's Barrow Island Area in Summer 2012. Jumbo shipped 25 concrete caissons used in building a Heavy Lift Offloading Quayside for end client Chevron's LNG plant to be constructed on the island. Classification societies Bureau Veritas and Det Norske Veritas as well as academic institutions such as Delft University of Technology also contribute to Offshore Energy's conference program.

Side events In addition to the ticketed sessions, Offshore Energy once again offers a free to attend Decommissioning Seminar organized in cooperation with IRO and Decom North Sea. Also returning to the show is the

Drilling and Wells Cluster Meeting. Initiated by the Netherlands Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Association the Cluster meeting brings together drilling professionals from both operators and contractors. New this year is the Dutch Oil and Gas Industry Supply Chain Seminar by FPAL, part of Achilles Group.

Fastest growing Offshore Event Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference is the fastest growing event in Europe for the global offshore industry. Labtech targets expansion in Norwegian market Labtech, the Aberdeen-based global leader in modular engineering, has completed a major order for a Norwegian oilfield services company for deployment in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Known as one of the harshest environments to operate within, the NORSOK standards are developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry to ensure adequate safety, value adding and cost effectiveness for petroleum industry developments and operations in the sector. NORSOK standards are adopted in the region and serve as the standard reference for regulators. “We are delighted to announce the successful delivery of this project, it represents a significant milestone for us as it is our largest contract to date in the Norwegian market.

We have made no secret of our desire to extend our services into the Norwegian sector,” said Labtech sales manager for customer equipment Alan Duguid. “This project is testimony to Labtech’s capability to serve our growing customer base in the region,” added Mr Duguid. Labtech, as part of Specialist Services Group, is making its debut at this year’s ONS in Stavanger from August 28-31. “Labtech’s attendance at ONS 2012 illustrates the company’s growing involvement in the market,”

said Labtech HIRE sales manager Iain McMillan, adding: “There is a definite requirement for high quality accommodation in one of the most demanding environments in the world and we intend to serve that market and others from our Aberdeen operation.” Employing 90 staff across two sites in Aberdeen, Labtech has built a solid reputation for operating a highly successful rental fleet in the UK Continental Shelf. Now the company’s new owners are committed to growing the rental activity. Labtech is part of Specialist Services Group, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of living quarters, office and technical modular buildings for the oil and gas industry.

It recently invested £1 million in the Aberdeen-based hire fleet as part of a £10 million global investment. The launch earlier this year of the rental operation in Aberdeen has proved to be a great success, predominantly led by 20ft drilling and engineering cabins and laboratories. The new fleet of cabins, all Zone 1 certified and with some fully NORSOK compliant, will serve the growing North Sea market and international requirements. All cabins are fully maintained and serviced making them ready for use when delivered. An additional 70 units are ready for deployment in the Specialist Services Group’s yard in Dubai. The group’s global fleet comprises almost 400 units. Labtech is attending ONS at stand J980/18

Damen launches new design: Damen Offshore Carrier 7500 Damen Shipyards presents a new shipping concept to the market – the Damen Offshore Carrier (DOC) 7500 – specifically designed as a smaller heavy transport, offshore installation and ro-ro platform suitable for multiple markets. The Damen Offshore Carrier aims to provide flexibility and year-round utilisation. Damen developed the new vessel in cooperation with Singapore based heavy lift transport specialist Hans van Mameren, managing director of Ha-Ce Engineering Pte Ltd.. The DOC has an endurance of 65 days, a large, flat and unobstructed deck of 2,300 m2, a deck strength of 20 t/ m2 and is highly fuel-efficient.

Damen Offshore Carrier Virtual – a 3D app The Damen Offshore Carrier Virtual is an application which runs on Apple IOS and Android devices. The main goal is to visualise a 3D virtual model of the DOC on top of a marker. This is known as augmented reality. The application can be found on the regular Apple and Android stores under the application name: Damen Offshore Carrier Virtual. After downloading the app, just start it up and point at our marker (also to be found on the Damen website: www.damen.com/downloads

Remko Bouma, Sales Manager of Damen Shipyards Bergum, says: “When we decided to realise a new design together, we wanted to create a vessel that was able to carry modules and cargo on an open deck over medium and long distances, complying the demands of today’s market. I think this vessel will be ‘the’ alternative for the more time consuming tug and barge transportations.” The Damen Offshore Carrier is able to handle higher sea states, whilst maintaining course and speed and, by that, being more economical and reliable, he stresses. As well as economical fuel consumption, the vessel can run on HFO380, making it even more cost efficient.

Sustained speed in higher sea states “Tug-barge combinations are not able to cope with the challenging seas so easily. Deviation from course and reduced speeds can have great impact on the schedule”, says Mr Bouma.” Therefore, Damen set out to find an alternative. The DOC offers much lower fuel cost and is better able to maintain course and speed, typically averaging 10-12 knots, where a tug and barge would average only 5-7 knots. “There is a definite time advantage; the DOC can keep to the schedule and at a higher speed!”

Reduced fuel consumption: > 50% Damen’s R&D Department’s extensive model test programs show that the DOC reduces fuel consumption by 50-75% compared to a tug-barge combination.

In the design process particular attention was paid to the bow and hull form. The new distinctive, sleek bow and slender hull enables the vessel to sustain its speed and course in head seas, as well as helping to reduce fuel consumption. The bow design diminishes accelerations and reduces slamming to a very low level, improving comfort and safety for the vessel, crew and cargo.

Multifunctional A multifunctional ability was a key part of the DOC design. Damen was keen that it should find deployment in several markets, hence its suitability for shoreto-(off)shore transport, ro-ro operations and installation work. The large unobstructed deck is free of any manholes, exhaust and de-aeration pipes. Ro-ro operations are unobstructed and modules can be stowed and secured everywhere on deck. An efficient ballast system and the ability to handle ro-ro over the stern and sides are other important advantages.

DP2 The DOC equipped with DP2 will meet the present offshore market demands. DP2 makes the DOC extremely stable for safe offshore loading/unloading operations. DP3 can also be implemented. The vessel is suited for a replenishment role and could be used for bunkering fuel and other consumables to vessels/ installations working in the field as well as for crew exchanges. The DOC can comfortably accommodate 30 people, which can be expanded when in installation mode.

Transport & Installation The offshore wind and tidal energy markets are other focus areas. The Damen Offshore Carrier can be used in a feedering solution for

offshore wind farms, transporting nacelles, transition pieces and monopiles. Its 2,300 m2 platform with 20 t/m2 load capacity can be used for a wide variety of offshore installation work such as cable laying, subsea installation, reel laying, floatover installation and other methods. For these purposes the vessel can be outfitted with all necessary installation equipment. This can be either a modular solution at a particular stage in the vessel’s operational life or an integral solution part of the initial shipbuilding process.

Submersible Yet another option is the DOC as a semi-submersible vessel, equipped with buoyancy casings.

Additionally, the DOC can be fitted with a Damen Deep Dredge giving owners a deepsea dredging and mining solution up to 200 m water depth. “This really is an ideal platform for a wide range of solutions, we have made the DOC as versatile as possible”, says Mr Bouma. “The whole idea is to maximise uptime while reducing cost.” Currently the DOC is 27.5 m wide. Already Damen is considering a larger version of 32.5 m wide. The vessel has a Green Passport and a Zero Dumping certification and the fuel tanks are protected with cofferdams. The first DOC 7500 can be delivered in 2014.

Churchill Drilling Tools announces successful deployment of its MX™ SMART DART™ technology for down-hole pressure testing Churchill Drilling Tools, the Aberdeen-based producer of patented down-hole tools, has announced the successful deployment of its Mechanical Extrusion (MX™) and SMART DART™ systems in drill-string pressure testing.

The MX™ system allows the use of rigid SMART DARTS™ for multi-cycle control and exploits their robustness and resilience to High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) environments to deliver greater speed, reliability and performance than with conventional ball activation. The company’s PTS MX™ system uses SMART DARTS™ to perform pressure testing with increased performance and flexibility. The system provides a simple yet accurate way to test a drill string up to a specific pre-set pressure with the capability to regain circulation between each test. This allows users to perform multiple tests at various pressures in a single run. The PTS MX™ can be run in any length of pipe, at any angle or temperature and with any type of circulation fluid. The subs have fully tapered internals, provide unrestricted circulation and have a full thru-bore prior to the first cycle. The SMART DART™ is dropped and pumped into place with the load transmitted through pins in the dart into the PTS MX™ sub; the pins determine the shear out pressure. Pressure can be held at the required test level for as long as necessary, and when testing is complete a small increase in pressure is used to the shear out the dart into the catcher below. The unique benefits of

the system are that multiple test cycles can be performed; full circulation is regained between each test, and that the shear out point can be accurately modified by altering the dart’s pins before it is dropped. The system was first successfully deployed in Norway by a major pipe manufacturer in 2011 with shearing accuracy results of 99.6%. As a result of this success, a full program of further drill string development applications has been scheduled using the system. The system is also being used in the UKCS for leak detection in operational drill-strings, in preemptive integrity tests prior to ultra-critical high-pressure phases. Churchill Drilling Tools’ director Mike Churchill said: “With the strong performance record of the MX™ darts in bypass applications and the simplicity of adapting them to others, we were confident we could provide a reliable solution for our customers very quickly. With no pre configuration required, the PTS MX™ has shown itself to be an unobtrusive, accurate and flexible testing system that can be deployed quickly and easily, and it is a further illustration of the power and capability of MX™ darts to control down-hole operations precisely. “Operators have welcomed this performance and have asked us to extend the availability of dart activation to other downhole mechanisms. One of the objectives we are working hard at is to make this technology more widely available to the industry in other types of tool.”

Shipdock lands four contracts for upgrading jack-up vessels ‘Secret weapon’: dedicated on site steel construction and machining facility The skyline of the Amsterdam harbours has been visibly altered in the neighbourhood of Shipdock, Amsterdam’s premier ship repair and conversion yard. The company has recently secured four major contracts for the upgrading and maintenance of the jack-up vessels GMS Endurance, GMS Endeavour, Seajack Leviathan and Seajack Zaratan. These vessels, equipped with elevating legs of over 100m in height, will be keeping the shipyard busy throughout the summer months. Shipdock has managed to considerably increase its activities in the offshore market since the very first jack-up barge, the Danish-based A2SEA Sea Jack, came into the yard approximately two years ago. The main task then carried out at Shipdock was to lengthen the legs in order to keep the lower cable sheeves out of the mud in elevating mode. Until some months ago, Shipdock expected to be working on one or two jack-ups per year. Because of the rapidly growing wind-park construction activities in the nearby North Sea waters, the total for this year is already standing at four of these very specialised vessels!

The most important jobs that the new contracts require are:

THE MX™ SMART DART™

An HPGT, multi-cycling, activation mechanism for controlling devices for conventionally cycled with plastically extruding balls 1. Loading Area 2. Retained Shear Pins 3. Rigid, colla[sible landing shoulder 4. Shoulder latch

“I am extremely pleased that we can provide BG Group with a solution to their well intervention needs.”

•manufacture and installation of new crane pedestals •installation of heavier cranes reinforcement of supporting deck structures •installation of helidecks manufacture and installation of winch foundations •lengthening of legs (on the GMS Endeavour) •general project mobilisation work

Senior project manager at Shipdock, Tjeerd Schulting, is justifiably proud that Shipdock has been chosen for these important new contracts: “Don’t think that it’s all so easy – over the years we have worked hard to build up a solid reputation for being extremely well-equipped for projects like this. Other important factors are that we offer a guarantee of work to all required safety standards; for North Sea operations we are, geographically, in a very attractive location and Shipdock has the right-sized docks and repair berths equipped with heavy duty cranes; and that is all topped-off by our worldclass package of high quality workmanship, competitive pricing, on-time delivery and full service on site.”

Tjeerd goes on to include a couple of Shipdock’s ‘secret weapons’: “Our sister company, Niron Staal, is located within Shipdock’s premises and provides dedicated steel construction and heavy machining facilities to support Shipdock, where necessary, on all projects. Finally, the broad diversity of tasks on the jack-up vessels illustrates the competence and flexibility of Shipdock’s dedicated staff. When it comes to repair and conversion, the decisive factor is always the experience and enthusiasm of the people who are actually doing the job.”

Project completed with zero safety incidents and environmental conservation incidents

Jumbo completed shipm caissons for Gorgon pro On August 12, 2012, Jumbo successfully completed the transport and discharge of twenty-five MOF caissons for the Gorgon Project. These concrete caissons will form the base of the heavy lift Material Offloading Facility for the Chevron LNG Plant, to be constructed on Barrow Island in Australia. The crew of the Jumbo Jubilee accomplished a discharge rate of one caisson per day. Jumbo’s transport solution supported the Gorgon project perfectly by reducing projects critical path activities in the development of the Material Offloading Facility. Scope of work The Jumbo Jubilee transported the twenty-five caissons from Port Klang, Malaysia to Barrow Island, Australia in four shipments. The caissons, weighing from 600t up to 700t

Due to the enormous hold capacity of the Jumbo Jubilee and its ability to sail with open hatches, it was possible to transport seven MOF caissons simultaneously, while maintaining a minimum ship draft. At Barrow

Barrow Island is a ‘Class A Nature Reserve’. Jumbo developed and implemented a strict Quarantine Compliance Plan, including an extensive familiarization and environmental training program. This Environmental Compliance Program, combined with Jumbo’s “Stay Well” Program and the vigilance of the captain and crew, resulted in a project completion with zero environmental conservation incidents, zero safety incidents, and zero lost time on Jumbo’s account.

GL Noble Denton to Pose Key Questions for North Sea Oil and Gas Industry at ONS 2012 • Global technical advisor to poll hundreds of industry professionals on essential issues affecting oil and gas at ONS, Stavanger, August 28-31, 2012. • Have your say by visiting the GL Noble Denton stand (Hall H, stand 808). Participants have the chance to win a new iPad after the show. Stavanger, Norway: 22 August 2012: GL Noble Denton, the global independent technical advisor to the oil and gas industry, will poll hundreds of industry professionals on the current issues affecting the oil and gas market in the northern seas at Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) 2012, 28-31 August, 2012.

The polls will also be completed online by senior professionals from across the industry.

Despite being recognised globally as a mature province, the North Sea region is enjoying a period of renewed activity and optimism. New plays are continuing to be discovered in Norwegian and UK waters, pointing to the continued availability of reserves. However, the area continues to face significant challenges.

Tore Lea, GL Noble Denton’s Country Manager for Norway, said: “The theme for ONS 2012 is ‘confronting energy paradoxes’ and the questions we will be asking in our Industry Snapshot Poll reflect some of the contradictions the sector faces. Despite Norway’s declining production, recent discoveries such as King Lear, Aldous and Avaldsnes (recently named the Johan Sverdrup field) suggest cause for optimism, while the viability and potential impact of Arctic development are major questions for all within the energy industry.

GL Noble Denton will be conducting three Industry Snapshot Polls during the conference, to explore delegates’ opinions on the region’s latest challenges and gain a clear insight into the issues facing the industry. Conference attendees are invited to take part in the poll at GL Noble Denton’s stand (Hall H, stand 808), where they will be asked to vote on one question per day:

“The availability of enough skilled professionals to take advantage of this renewed activity and what impact skill shortages might have on growth are key issues for the region, while it will also be intriguing to discover whether the industry shares the concerns of the UK and Norwegian governments about the European Commission’s plan for unified offshore safety regulation throughout the EU.

• Could Arctic exploration reverse Norway’s decline in oil production by 2030? • Does Norway have enough skilled professionals to develop the large reserves recently discovered in the North Sea? • Do you support the Norwegian and UK governments' opposition to a single set of European safety regulations?

“Through GL Noble Denton’s Industry Snapshot Polls, we expect to obtain valuable observations from the industry on the obstacles and opportunities it faces in this region. We are looking forward to welcoming conference attendees to our stand and hearing what they have their say on these important issues.”

Participants will be invited to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to these questions, using their business cards as ballot slips. The results of each day’s question will be announced the following morning, before voting on a new question begins.

To participate in the poll, visit GL Noble Denton in Hall H at stand 808. Participants will be entered into a prize draw to win a new iPad after the show. The results of the polls will be available after the conference at: www.gl-nobledenton.com

CYGNUS PROJECT CONTRACT VOOR HEEREMA FABRICATION GROUP’s HARTLEPOOL YARD
