All courses that I have taken so far through Olds College for the Agronomy Certificate Level 1 are all very well structured and the information is provided in meaningful tutorials week by week. For more than 35 years, the Agriculture Lenders Workshop has been a professional development experience for beginning and continuing lenders and other financial professionals in the agricultural industry. This 5 day long virtual workshop provided by Olds College, a leader in virtual and distance learning, will provide each participant a window into today’s agriculture and instruction about how to be an effective farm lender.
Drone School for Farmers & Agronomists

Whether you’ve never flown a drone and want to learn, or are looking to refine your skills, this 2-day class is for everyone. Come join us for this fun, hands-on course and learn how to fly drones safely and legally while focusing on the benefits of using drones in agriculture. Save time and increase efficiency by learning how you can use drones to check on livestock, map fields and crops, and access hard to reach areas. At the end of the course, participants will have the opportunity to take the online certification test with Transport Canada to fly legally.
Certified Crop Adviser Tutorial

Advance your career and become a Certified Crop Adviser! Take advantage of this intensive tutorial training session and prepare to write the Certified Crop Adviser Prairie Province and International exam. The instructors have a wealth of knowledge that they will share with you to help you feel better prepared to write the exam.
This is an overview course which highlights the regional and international objectives required to pass the CCA exam. The instructors have a wealth of knowledge in this regard, which will help you to better prepare to write the exam.
Weed Identification

The self-directed Weed Identification Microcredential was designed with seasonal staff in mind and provides learners with an introduction to plant and weed identification based upon physical characteristics, biology, lifecycle and preferred environment. Additionally, strategies for the management and control of weeds and invasive plants are explored in agricultural and environmental systems using the concept of Integrated Weed Management (IWM).
Vertical Farming Technologies

This online microcredential focuses on the fundamentals of vertical farming as part of Controlled Environment Agriculture. Students acquire knowledge and skills about practices and procedures (cultivation methods, environment controls, and management practices including start-up considerations). Students will also learn about how technology and data systems are used on a vertical farm which will enable them to enter the vertical farming industry or set-up a home plug and play system.
On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF)

Lakeland College and Olds College of Agriculture & Technology have collaborated to deliver industry-recognized, microcredentials covering Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) in three areas for Professional Agrologists and Certified Crop Advisors:
Cover Cropping: This course focuses on using Climate Smart Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) for Cover Cropping for Grain Crop and Livestock Production Systems. This is intended to certify certain requirements, such as identifying BMPs and their specific goals as well as implementations, monitoring and outcomes of BMPs via the integration of cover cropping into grain and livestock production systems.
Nitrogen Management: In this course, professionals will demonstrate an understanding of how to expand the adoption of Best Management Practices (BMPS) in Nitrogen Management to reduce carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions which will qualify them to work with farmers to receive OCAF funding.
Rotational Grazing: In this course, professionals will demonstrate an understanding of how to expand the adoption of Best Management Practices (BMPS) in rotational grazing to reduce carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions which will quality them to work with farmers to receive OCAF funding.

Equine Massage Therapy Certificate

The Equine Massage Therapy Certificate has been developed to promote and provide standardization within the industry. Over the course of 2 semesters. You will learn theory and gain hands-on experiences to allow you to be employed in the Equine Massage Therapy field. The Equine Massage Therapy Certificate will provide you with a certificate in Professional and Continuing Education. *Each course can also be taken as a stand-alone.

Equine Massage Field Placement
The directed field study course will allow students to further develop and refine knowledge and skills in Equine Massage. Students will also demonstrate knowledge and skills of the program outcomes. The field study consists of three different tasks and is meant to ensure that students leave the program with a level of competency (knowledge, skills, and attributes) in Equine Massage Therapy. The main component of the field study is the completion of 50 massages on horses and a portfolio of work to show evidence of this.
Requirements:
Students must have basic horse knowledge be comfortable working in and around horses.

Professional Racetrack Exercise Rider: Professional Racetrack Groom:
The Professional Racetrack Exercise Rider Program is a “Learn and Earn” concept program that will give you the confidence and skill to become a professional licensed Exercise Rider at Alberta Horse Racing Tracks! This unique program has a blended approach that will allow you to study online, learn from and practice your skill with industry professional instructors. You will acquire the skills you need to exercise race horses on a track.
The Professional Racetrack Groom Course is a “Learn and Earn” concept program that will give you the confidence and skill to become a professional licensed Groom at Alberta Horse Racing Tracks! This unique program has a blended approach that will allow you to study online, learn from and practice your skill with industry professional instructors, all while allowing you to earn a wage working in the industry! Being in this program has really helped me expand my knowledge of horses and also helped me to become a better and stronger rider, everyday you are learning something new. During my time here at the college and racetrack it didn't even feel like school, during class time was all hands on work, which made things easier to learn. Cattle AI (Artificial Insemination)

This intensive, 4-day course covers all aspects of Artificial Insemination (AI) and herd reproduction management. Students will be introduced to aspects of artificial insemination and herd reproduction management to be used in a producer’s own herd. Lectures will provide an understanding of controlled breeding, sire selection, and nutrition. The logistics of getting set up to practice all on your own will be addressed, including required equipment and costs. The hands-on portion of this course will provide the opportunity for students to practice correct semen handling and artificial insemination techniques and procedures.
Pasture to Plate Direct Marketing

Pasture to Plate - Livestock Direct Marketing is a one of a kind short course. You will gain skills over a six-week time frame that will help them to better understand livestock agro-food systems, niche product marketing, and how they can apply direct marketing skills to their own operations. With recent regulation changes in Alberta, producers can now obtain an on-farm slaughter license thus allowing producers more flexibility when selling a live animal directly to a consumer. This interactive short course will give you training, skills, and ideas to start direct marketing your products from your own 'Pasture to the consumers Plate'!
Western Photography Fundamentals
Intake: Winter
Delivery: In-Person at the Olds College Campus
A one-day course that centers around the fundamentals of photography with a central theme around the country lifestyle. Learn how to get your camera out of auto mode and control it so you can get the effect that you want in different scenarios from action to portraits and everything in between.
The course will start the day with some theory and discussion in the classroom. Transitioning from there into trying out the settings and getting to know your cameras. To finish out the day we will head back into the classroom and cover some basic editing to give a nice finish to your photos.
Horse Hoof Care & Trimming
Intake: Fall, Winter
Delivery: In-Person at the Olds College Campus
Save money and improve hoof health by learning the basics of hoof anatomy, care and trimming. This 2 1/2 day course will give you a great introduction to trimming and even the opportunity to trim your own horse by the end. You will practice trimming in a supervised setting. If you would like to put your newly acquired knowledge to use immediately, you have the opportunity to bring your own horses on the last day of the course; this way you can trim your horses for the first time with assistance & guidance from your instructor.
Basics of Equine Massage Therapy Workshop

Basics of equine massage offers you one evening of theory and two days of hands-on massage for your horse. This course gives you, a horse owner, the ability to give your horse the comfort for sore muscles and related soft tissue stress, allowing it to return to work sooner. Some equine anatomy knowledge is recommended and it is necessary to bring your own horse.
Introduction to Veterinary Medicine for Teens

What it is like to work in a veterinary clinic or other animal care related business? This veterinary science camp will show you! Through classroom learning, demonstration and hands-on learning opportunities you will learn basic skills and become familiar with various career opportunities related to veterinary science.
If you are between the ages of 13-16, considering a career in the veterinary industry, and want to understand the different roles that are available as career options, then this course may be for you. In this hands-on course, the instructor and guest speakers will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of Veterinary Medical Receptionists, Veterinary Technical Assistants, Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinarians and non-veterinary Animal Care Facilities. You will learn some basics of animal care and first aid, including animal behavior, safety, handling and restraint, general animal health assessment and physical exams.

Turf Science Certificate

This certificate addresses general and specialized aspects of the science, current cultural systems and construction practices for the turf industry. Courses provide practical applications relevant to parks, sports turf, golf course, professional lawn care, sod production and turf-related sales/service sectors.
The cerfificate consists of Turf Science Level 1 and 2, as well as an elective. Participants will have two electives to choose from and must take one to complete the program.
Turf Science Level 1 Course: Turf Science Level 2 Course:
This course is an introduction to the science of turf establishment and maintenance practices for golf courses, sports fields, and parks. You will learn the basics of turfgrass biology and the physical properties of soils. Various methods of turfgrass establishment, basic cultural practices (mowing, irrigation, and fertilization), drainage systems, and integrated weed and wildlife pest management are also covered.
This course builds on Level 1, exploring the use of different grasses for parks, sports turf and golf course applications. You will learn selected aspects of turfgrass physiology, and soil chemistry as they relate to turf health. Fertilizer application and fertility programs, irrigation system operation, specialized cultural practices (thatch management, aeration and topdressing), the management of insect pests, and an overview of turf diseases are also covered.

Extraction and Purification for the Cannabis/Hemp Industry
You will learn about the processes involved for the extraction of cannabis oil and the process required to produce different qualities of refined and purified oil from cannabis and industrial hemp. This includes processes for industrial drying, milling and different extraction technologies with a focus on supercritical CO2 extraction, technologies for fractionation and purification. You will also learn basic physicochemical principles governing the extraction and purification processes for a clear understanding of the process sequence and the selection of the technology for extraction. At the end of the course, the students will be able to identify the main steps to produce cannabis oils at different concentrations and identify the main principles operating each of the processes.
Introduction to Quality Assurance in the Cannabis Industry
You will learn the role of the Quality Assurance/Control Person as it relates Good Production Practices and other responsibilities as defined under the Health Canada Cannabis Act. Key concepts include Introduction into Quality Assurance and Control, Standard Operating Procedure design and implementation, PCP Acts, PMRA , Type of Hazards, Integrated Pest Management, Quality control and testing, Packaging and storage, Labeling, Good Documentation Practices, and management of complaints and recalls.

Pesticide Applicator Recertification

Pesticide Applicator Certificates are issued for up to 5 years, prior to expiration you need to either complete the required number of Continuing Education Units (CEU) to recertify or rewrite the exam. If you choose to complete your CEU's to recertify, we offer 4 different workshops that will keep you up-to-date with the newest ideas and technology as well as build your professional network.
There are 10 concept areas for training: Application Technology, Emergency Response, Environment, General Information, Human Health, Labeling, Pesticide Safety, Pest Management , Professionalism and Regulations.
Steps to Becoming a Certified Pesticide Applicator:
1) Purchase the Home Study Manual from Lakeland College and study on your own until you are familiar with the content (it is recommended that you review for 10-40 hours prior to attending any tutorials)
2) Register for a complete tutorial at Olds College
3) Schedule in for an exam, which is done through Lakeland College. A Pesticide Applicator Certificate is issued upon successful completion of the provincial certification exam.
4) Maintain your certification status by completing Continuing Education Units (CEUs) workshops within 5 years.

This exciting online program prepares graduates for employment in the growing alcohol spirits distillation industry, or to support those already in the workplace. This program provides applicable and necessary hands-on training, and is committed to the promotion of sustainable production practices. Specific areas of instruction include fermentation theory and application, maturation and blending of spirits, sensory evaluation, and quality assurance and management in a distillery environment.

Introduction to Brewing Certificate

Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate

The Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate Program (HEO) provides you with the knowledge and skills required to join the workforce as an entry-level heavy equipment operator. In this 12-week program, plus a practicum, you will focus on job-site fundamentals including: health, safety, and environmental training and awareness; equipment maintenance and operation; and application of earth moving techniques using hands-on operations. You will be trained to operate selected pieces of equipment, which may include: compactor, loader, dozer, grader, skid steer and excavator.
Admission Requirements:
This program has admission requirements and student funding may be available. It is recommended to register early to avoid dissapointment as some courses have a maximum enrollment.

Experienced Heavy Equipment Operator Safety Certification
Industry is seeing a need for their experienced operators to have proficiency certification in order to either bid on projects or abide by insurance guidelines. While this is not legislated in Alberta at this time, Olds College has government approved Heavy Equipment Operator Curriculum. We are able to provide equipment specific Safety Certification. This is based upon our curriculum that has been developed and reviewed with Industry Stakeholders. Prerequisite hours for entry into the evaluations are EQUIPMENT BASED. We require that prior to us evaluating an operator, a sufficient amount of hours on the specific piece of equipment must be logged. Equipment includes loader, skid steer, dozer, grader and packer. Students that successfully complete the classroom work and evaluation will receive a certificate valid for 3 years. Group rates available.

Utility Tree Worker Safety Training

Are you currently employed in a position where you are clearing brush and trimming trees around power lines? This 2-week course can help you take your career to the next level as it is one of the components required to apply for certification as a Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer in Alberta with the Professional Vegetation Manager's Association (PVMA).
Pre-requisite
You must have six months of related work experience in tree and brush work around power lines to register for this course.
Special Requirements:
Please check the Olds College Continuing Education website for specific eligibility criteria, student equipment and supplies required for this course. After successful completion of this course and the required number of work experience hours, students can apply to the PVMA for certification. Utility Tree Worker & Tree Trimmer Recertification
Intake: Spring
Delivery: In Person at the Olds College Campus or Online
The Professional Vegetation Manager's Association (PVMA), in association with the Work & Safety Standards Division of Alberta Labour requires certified Utility Tree Trimmers and Utility Tree Workers to complete a recertification course within five years after obtaining their initial certification and every five years thereafter. You will be updated on current electrical safety standards and safety practices important to you on the job. After successful completion of this course and a passing mark on the exam, currently employed Utility Tree Workers and Utility Tree Trimmers can apply to the PVMA for recertification.
Online Self-Directed Optional Stump Treatment Pesticide Certification
You should be comfortable with computers and should be prepared to locate and schedule a proctor to write the exam within the 2-week course dates. The online recertification course cannot be taken consecutively (twice in a row). In-class recertification is required at least once in a 10-year period. If your recertification has lapsed, then you will be required to take the in-class session to recertify. There will be only one retake for the final online exam, a retake cannot occur prior to 30 days of the first attempt. If you are not successful on the retake exam, you will be required to take an in-class recertification that is held in the Spring.
The Stump Treatment Pesticide Certificate is required for individuals applying herbicides to stumps and is available only to those with a Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer Certificate. The Stump Treatment tutorial and exam are optional and offered in the evening during the Utility Tree Worker Safety course.
Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT) Entrance Exam Preparation

So you want to enter into the Apprenticeship system, but you don't have the high school pre-requisites? We can help. Rather than going back to take the high school courses, you can take the Trades Entrance Exam.
The Pre-Apprenticeship Exam Training program consists of four individual courses to prepare participants of the trades industry for success in their continued employment, education and mandatory qualifications exams. These courses are self-directed with no instructor, yet interactive with innovative learning exercises. Students who wish to register to become an apprentice and learn on the job, without the prerequisite high school education, must write an entrance exam based on Math, Science, and English Skills. Similarly, those challenging the trade credential may benefit from these courses if they require some upgrading in basic Science, Math or English.
Each trade requires a variety of different requirements (for example some require Math similar to 20-3, some recommend higher levels), but each of these courses has no prerequisites. The learner can choose which competencies to study that pertains to the exam he or she will be taking. Challenge yourself to increase your success!

Air Brake Endorsement

Classes 2-5 drivers are able to take this course and add a "Q" endorsement to their license (Class 1 drivers have air brakes specific testing). Class 5GDL is acceptable. Class 7 (learners) cannot attend a Q endorsement training.
After successful completion of the practical and written exams at the conclusion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for the "Q" endorsement through a Registry agent. A practical exam is given at the end of the course. Successful completion of the practical portion at Olds College will enable you to write the written theory portion at a registry office to complete the process with Alberta Transportation.

Small Engines - Tune Up & Regular Maintenance

For those with little to no experience with engines. This course will cover the theory and techniques to diagnose small engines. Students will then have hands-on time in the lab to tune up and perform regular maintenance on small engines such as lawnmowers, garden tractors, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. You will come away with a better understanding on how to diagnose electrical, fuel and mechanical problems and get the engine tuned up.

For beginners as well as welders who would like more hands-on practice. This course will cover the theory, techniques, and shop practice of oxy-acetylene welding of mild steel, brazing, flame cutting, arc welding, and MIG welding.
Note: Students must bring PPE - Safety Glasses, Coveralls, Good Sturdy Shoes (steel toe recommended), Welding Gloves, Pliers, Welding Beanie or hat. Welding hood will be provided. Trainees select a specialization and under the guidance of their trainer, work towards mastering all the skills within their training program.

Canada-Alberta Job Grant Overview
The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is an employer-driven training program. This means that employers decide on who gets training and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees. Employers are required to use a third-party training provider to deliver the formal training either onsite, online, or in a classroom setting.
The Canada Job Grant is part of the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta’s commitment to help address skills mismatches and ensure that employees are being trained in high-demand areas.

How the Alberta-Canada Job Grant Can Work For You:
By supporting and investing in employee training, the Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) helps you to increase productivity, employee skills, and employee retention. The CAJG can be applied to many training situations, offering employers potential solutions to their workplace challenges.
The CAJG is an employer-driven training program. As an employer, you decide who gets training and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees. Employers will cover a minimum of one third of direct training costs, while the government covers two-thirds up to a maximum of $10,000 per trainee. If hiring and training an unemployed Albertan, up to 100% of training costs could be covered to a maximum of $15,000 per trainee.
