G-FESTIVAL @

COMING SOON!
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF G-FEST Watch this space! Details to be announced soon
Limted number of tickets available for this very special event Sadly we have been unable to secure a Worsley venue for this year despite the huge community support. However, thanks to Georgia’s Children’s friends at the Waterside in Monton we will be able to celebrate 10 years of G-Fest on Georgia’s 31st Birthday, Saturday 4th June. Covid has brought difficult times for all charities, despite the huge success of ‘G-Fest hits the streets’ during lockdown and the physical challenges of ‘10k410k’ and the forthcoming ‘3Peakson2Wheels’ this July.
6 ON OUR DOORSTEP
A big G-Festival would have been the perfect boost for all of us, but sadly its not to be. This will have a huge affect on our projects for disadvantaged children at home and across the world , but hopefully next year we can find a local venue and continue the awesome work this community has been responsible for in the memory of my daughter Georgia. Thank you all for your amazing support during the last 10 years.

VOLUNTEERS HELP CREATE A COMMUNITY GARDEN We are Incredible Education CIC, a not-for-profit social enterprise. Following the launch of Incredible Edible Salford in 2013 by Ian Bocock, there was clearly a need to strengthen the role that education and outdoor learning can play in the health and wellbeing of all. In 2014, Incredible Education CIC was founded, and over the past 8 years we have delivered many activities and programmes using Horticulture and Forest School to empower thousands of Salford people of all ages. In July 2021 we opened Cleavley Community Forest Garden in Winton, located next to Cleavley Athletic Track on the Port Salford Greenway. Here we offer a range of services, including ‘Stay and Play’ for 18 month to 4 year olds; Forest School sessions with local primary schools; Children’s Party packages; Horticulture wEducation; Volunteer Programmes and much more!
8 ON OUR DOORSTEP
More recently we launched The Ivy Den Café within the Forest Garden where we serve barista style coffee and artisan teas along with locally produced cakes. There is also a small Garden Shop where we sell gardening equipment, compost and plants. As a social enterprise we have strived to ensure our sustainability by adding services and activities that generate an income so that we aren’t wholly reliant on funding. This model will ensure we can continue to provide the many FREE community events such as our Summer Teddy Bears Picnic, the Pumpkin Palava in October and the Festive Mini Tree decorating event in December. We hope to welcome you to the Forest Garden soon! www.incredibleeducation.co.uk

PROMOTING POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING Talk About It Mate are Social Enterprise who deliver groups and events online and in Greater Manchester. Founded in 2017 as a social group by Mike Richard, who was looking to find a supportive and accepting place to talk about his mental health, the popularity of these meetups led to the growth of a welcoming and diverse community providing safe and non-judgemental spaces for people to connect and support each other.
MEN’S GROUP: WALKDEN
Tuesdays 1-3pm, FREE The Make Space, Walkden Town Centre
www.talkaboutitmate.co.uk
In early 2020 they launched a series of support groups for men, which quickly transitioned into successful online platforms and continued to grow during the pandemic. Expansion continued online into women’s groups, mixed groups and
other events including the recently launched Neurodiversity group as well as an upcoming LGBTQIA+ space. In 2021 ‘Walk About It Mate’ was launched as a weekly group staring at noon in Monton every Friday and face to face men’s groups were able to return. The success of these has paved the way for the creation of a new weekly men’s daytime group in Walkden Town Centre in The Make Space. These sessions are fully funded and refreshments will be provided and there are plans to add more men’s groups across Salford in the future.

THE 18TH CENTURY FUEL CRISIS T
here has been a lot of talk recently about an energy crisis. This brought to mind a lecture given by Hugh Malet to the Royal Society of Arts in London on 14th December 1974. ‘The Duke of Bridgewater and the 18th Century Fuel Crisis’ outlined how the construction of the Bridgewater canal reduced coal prices. Since the middle of the seventeenth century England had been suffering from a fuel problem; wood was getting scarcer and more expensive and coal was difficult to transport to the growing industrial areas. Locally some coal was transported on the Mersey and Irwell Navigation, but its cost was high as the producers conspired amongst themselves. The Bridgewater canal, from about 1757, brilliantly connected the Worsley coal mines with the growing towns of Manchester and Salford who were desperately short of fuel. As soon as the canal reached Barton the Duke was beginning to cut the price of coal in Manchester by half. Coal was hoisted over the side of Barton aqueduct by gig crane to his flats on the Mersey and Irwell Navigation below. There is also the story that the Duke ordered people who required small quantities of coal to be given priority to prevent poorer people being excluded from the benefits of the cheap fuel. Local people appreciated this gesture and when his coach drew into Manchester one day with tired horses they unhitched them and drew the carriage to Worsley by hand, cheering as they went. Malet interestingly adds that “wherever the waterways went, fuel prices came down by as much as half”.’ He adds, “The fuel famine of the eighteenth century would have stopped the 16 ON OUR DOORSTEP
growth not solely of industry but of population in many districts”. Although coal is now little used as a fuel, the current energy crisis makes you realise the benefits the Bridgewater canal brought in providing cheap fuel for homes and businesses. The images depict a rare image of a Mersey flat at Barton and the entrance to the underground canal at the Delph in Worsley. Written by Paul Hassall, Eccles & District History Society The latest Salford Link is available at local libraries, Salford Museum and Art Gallery and Ordsall Hall. Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: In Celebration Of A Remarkable Lady On 6th February 2022, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years since her accession to the throne. This astonishing achievement makes her the longest reigning living monarch anywhere in the world. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the title was previously held by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand until his death in 2016. His rule of 70 years 126 days was the second longest reign of a sovereign state in history. The longest-reigning monarch ever was King Louis XIV, who presided over France for 72 years 110 days (14 May 1643 - 1 September 1715). There is a year-long schedule of events to mark the occasion, and we’re all being encouraged to play our part even in a small way. For example there’s The Queen's Green Canopy project where communities are being helped to “plant a tree for the Jubilee” (www.queensgreencanopy.org). Plus we can buy souvenirs through the official Royal Collection shop (www.royalcollectionshop.co.uk). But all eyes will be on the first weekend of June when the Platinum Jubilee celebrations begin in earnest, with the main events set to take place Thursday 2nd and Sunday 5th June. We have an additional one-off bank holiday in England on 3rd June with the Spring Bank Holiday (usually late May) having been moved to 2nd June, creating a four-day weekend. Here are the events for the Platinum Jubilee weekend:
20 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Thursday 2nd June: Trooping the Colour from Buckingham Palace to Horse
Guards Parade, ending with an RAF fly-past, watched by the Queen from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Tickets can applied for via the website qbp.army.mod.uk/queensbirthdayparade 1,500 beacons will also be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, plus (for the first time) in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth countries. Friday 3rd June: Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral. Saturday 4th June: Platinum Party at the Palace, a special live concert from Buckingham Palace that will bring together some of the world’s biggest entertainment stars. Members of the public will be invited to apply for tickets, for more information go to www.royal.uk/platinum-jubilee-central-weekend. Sunday 5th June: The Big Jubilee Lunch where local communities are encouraged to come together, celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little bit better. Meanwhile in London the Platinum Jubilee Pageant will involve performers, dancers, musicians, military personnel, key workers and volunteers. Part of this event includes the River of Hope, which will comprise of two hundred silk flags which will process down The Mall, appearing like a moving river. Primary and secondary school children are invited to create a picture of their hopes and aspirations for the planet over the next 70 years. You can register your school’s interest to take part via riverofhope.co.uk. If you’re planning your own local celebrations to mark this momentous event, then the Royal Family has created a wealth of free resources to help via www.royal.uk/resources-platinum-jubilee Written by Helen Say www.cblservices.co.uk

UPDATES FROM GMP SALFORD NORTH WEST GMP Public Consultation:
Assistant Chief Constable Scott Green, who is overseeing the consultation as GMP's neighbourhood policing lead, said: "I'm delighted to be able to say that we have now opened our Neighbourhood Policing Consultation which will offer members of the public an opportunity to be involved in shaping our plans for local policing.
GMP has launched a Neighbourhood Policing Consultation in the latest step to fulfil public promises made by the Chief Constable. We're holding an event at Salford University, Mary Seacole Building on 5th April 2022 19.00-21.00pm, where the people of Salford can speak directly to one of our Chief Officers. In addition, GMP wants to hear your views on neighbourhood policing. The Chief Constable has committed to drive forward improvements to the service that GMP provide and the results of this survey will influence policing in your community. You can read more and access the survey at: www.gmp.police.uk/news/greater-manchester/ news/news/2022/february/neighbourhoodpolicing-consultation-launched/ Responses to the questionnaire will be used to assist the development of GMP's Neighbourhood Policing Plan, which is a key component of Chief Constable Stephen Watson's Plan on a Page improvement plan.
Police Cadets We are actively seeking young people to join our GMP Volunteer Police Cadets, and adults to become a Volunteer Cadet Leader. Over March, we held recruitment evenings for all cadet units across the force. It's an exciting opportunity for people to get involved in. To find out more go to the National VPC website vpc.police.uk. You can register your interest here or email VolunteerPoliceCadets@gmp.police.uk. You will be added to the waiting list for the next recruitment drive. Follow us on social media: GMP Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook & Worsley and GMP Volunteer Police Cadets 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP
The Chief Constable has been clear since he arrived in GMP that neighbourhood policing is the bedrock of British policing and therefore overhauling our previous approach is a significant component of the Plan on a Page improvement plan that he unveiled last September. We've already made some significant steps with the introduction of dedicated Chief Superintendents in each district and we are now looking to build on those strong foundations even more. A policing consultation of this scale is something that hasn’t taken place in Greater Manchester for some time so I would encourage members of the public to grab this opportunity and have their say. It is Your Neighbourhood; Your Police; Your Say. The consultation is due to last for six weeks and the questionnaire should take around ten minutes to complete so make sure you visit the GMP website and help shape our approach moving forward."
A further list of venues and dates for the public consultations are available on the GMP website.

Here’s how… This spring we have spent a lot of our time in our homes and gardens and so, by now, we may also be familiar with the regular wild visitors. Chances are you’ve been taking pleasure in putting seed onto a bird table and watching the different birds arriving through the day. Perhaps it has piqued your interest to know more about the familiar and unusual birds that you might have seen. If that’s the case, why not contribute to an ongoing survey on garden birds? Since 1995, all year round, ‘citizen scientists’ have recorded the birds and other wildlife visiting their gardens, enabling researchers at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to answer important questions about garden wildlife. The BTO Garden BirdWatch offers an opportunity to learn more about garden birds and other wildlife while contributing directly to BTO’s important scientific research on the value of gardens for wildlife. The organisation say: “The more we know about how wildlife uses our gardens, the more we can make our cities, towns, villages and individual gardens better for nature.” The survey involves simply keeping a list of the birds you see visiting your garden over the course of a week, and then entering this into the BTO’s online recording system. You can also record other garden wildlife, such as butterflies and mammals.
GET INVOLVED! The Garden BirdWatch is normally run as a membership, with an annual fee of £17, that entitles you to a helpful book and regular magazines. The generous financial support of participants is what allows BTO to carry out its work monitoring garden wildlife and its scientific research. Membership also entitles you 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP
to access to the online recording system, a regular e-newsletter with information on recording and identifying garden wildlife, as well as access to the BTO’s team of wildlife experts, to answer your questions. Kate Risely, Garden BirdWatch Organiser at the BTO says: “A connection to nature is so important to our well-being, and the easiest place to watch and learn about wildlife is in our own gardens. We hope that this opportunity to join the Garden BirdWatch community will help people across the UK find new meaning in their garden birdwatching, to learn new things and to play a part in national research into our garden wildlife.” To take part in Garden BirdWatch, visit the website www.bto.org/our-science/projects/gbw/join-gbw The BTO is the UK’s leading bird research charity. A growing membership and up to 60,000 volunteer birdwatchers contribute to the organisation’s surveys, collecting information that underpins conservation action in the UK. The BTO’s work is funded by supporters, government trusts, industry and conservation organisations. At its offices in Suffolk, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, staff analyse and publicise the results of surveys and projects. www.bto.org WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Local Business
Why does your local business need marketing?
There is only ONE reason: If people can’t see you then they’ll pick your competitor!
To attract and retain customers, your business needs to understand the value of marketing. People are unlikely to simply walk into your business and buy something from you if they don’t know who you are, what you are selling and why they should choose you over the competition (who are already doing that marketing to get noticed).
may not be right. Other priorities such as a boiler to replace, or Great Uncle Ray’s 100th birthday present to buy, might mean their cash is needed elsewhere. Also, the larger the purchase the more time they will take to research and consider. At this stage though, you are on their radar.
Many smaller businesses don’t place enough importance on marketing. They often see it as something that requires a lot of money and fancy advertising campaigns, but you don’t need the budget of Coca-Cola to market effectively. For example, with no money you can allocate a couple of hours of your time to promote your business through your social media channels. With a small amount of money you can place a print advert or a website banner.
are important to you, this isn’t always so with your prospects even if they specifically requested them. They may lose or misplace them, throw them away, accidentally delete them or spill their coffee on it. There may also be the slim possibility that you haven’t encouraged them to take immediate action. So, to help them remember, the key weapon to your marketing success now is Repetition.
Whatever you do however, you must be consistent. And here’s why - before any of your marketing is acted upon, your prospects need to go through four stages: Recognise, Read, React and Remember.
RECOGNISE: When someone first spots your advert
it flags you up in their sights. They see you, take a quick look and then most likely move on.
READ: The second time someone spots you they pay
more attention – they read what you’ve got to offer and understand you a bit more.
REACT: Generally, when someone spots your advert for the third time they get a sense of déjà vu. But even though the process of recognition has started, and they may like what you’ve got to offer, the timing 32 ON OUR DOORSTEP
REMEMBER: While your marketing communications
REPETITION: Your marketing communications are competing with so much other marketing, that to convert your prospects into buyers, you need to keep in touch with them, repeatedly, before they will finally be motivated to act. Repetition builds familiarity which in turn helps build credibility and encourages people to do business with you - also known as the “Know, Like and Trust factor”. How can you achieve this? With regular advertising in a trusted magazine such as On Our Doorstep (over 70% of our advertisers are repeat clients), combined with social media marketing, newsletters, direct emailing or even a leaflet drop. Important! Ensure your website and social pages are up to date, as the majority of people will research your business online before deciding to buy.

Salford Survivor Project
SUPPORTING THOUSANDS IN SALFORD Salford Survivor Project helped over 1,600 people last year who had been affected by domestic and family abuse. This year their CEO Jane Gregory, who is a regional spokesperson on Domestic Abuse became a commissioner and was appointed the Co-Chair with lived experience on the Greater Manchester Gender Based Violence board, whose strategy sets out a comprehensive, responsive programme of service delivery to enhance the safety of women and girls, while preventing gender-based violence from occurring in the first place and challenging the attitudes and inequalities that enable it. The strategy believes more needs to be done for victims and Salford Survivor are working in schools in Salford providing lived experience workshops, run by survivors of abuse, talking to children about Teen Abuse, Domestic abuse and healthy relationships. 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP
