Editor’s Note...
What’s On 28
I hope you are enjoying the summer so far. We are taking a welcome breather from the work-school routine and exams, and making the most of the long summer holidays. It’s great to have time to visit family and enjoy quality time together. The boys can revel in long lie-ins and wearing pj’s all day! September always seems to come around too fast, but by then they are fully recharged and ready to get back into their studies. This summer there are some fantastic events taking place from iconic food festivals in Bolton and Manchester to a big weekend of entertainment at Media City, celebrating the invention of the weekend here in Manchester in 1843. This is a one-off not to be missed!

SUPPORT SALFORD FOODBANK THIS SUMMER Keith Walker and Lorraine Rogers, volunteers at Salford Foodbank for almost a decade, will be hosting a couple of pop up collections during the summer. It would be great if you can support the Foodbank by adding a couple of non perishable tins or packets to your shop and drop off at:
In the last 18 months the local community has contributed over 8,500kg of food via Keith’s Food Gift Box and pop up events which he has arranged at Sainsbury’s and the Coop - an absolutely amazing community response!
Sainsbury’s Ellenbrook: Saturday13th August or Coop Ellenbrook: Saturday 17th September Both pop up events will be from 10am to 2pm.
Keith commented that the demand for the Foodbank greatly increased at the start of Covid and continues to increase week on week with the rising cost of living.
In addition Keith has a Food Gift Box on his driveway at 34 Boothstown Drive, Worsley, M28 1UF, available 24/7 to make donations. Alternatively Keith can collect from local addresses if you e-mail kwalker1@sky.com.
The Food Gift Box project has its own website. Visit www.foodgiftbox.co.uk for a map of box locations and details on how you can get involved and have a donation box on your driveway.

A NEW HOME FOR OLD DICK EVANS Last year we featured a story by Carole Greenhalgh about the grave of Dick Evans, a dog that was killed by a mining truck in 1862. His owner laid him to rest and placed a large memorial stone at the edge of Four Acre field in Mosley Common. Located next to the brook, the soil was gradually eroded by rising waters and the memorial stone sadly fell into the water. Carole dedicated herself for over a year to saving the stone and finding it a new home where it could still be seen, protected and local history could live on in the community. With help from Jim Mehan, from Wigan Local History and Heritage Society, and to Carole’s husband Geoff who supported her throughout her mission, the stone now has a new forever home at St Mary’s Church, Ellenbrook. Reverend Karen Owen welcomed the relocation of
Carole Greenhalgh & Reverend Karen Owen
the memorial to the church. A connection already existed between Dick Evans’ grave and St Mary’s Church. In 1639, Dame Dorothy Legh bequeathed £400 to Ellenbrook Chapel to buy Common Head Farm at Mosley Common, which is where the grave stood, and the income from the farm was used to support the church minister and the local poor. The memorial was celebrated in a special service on Sunday 29th May 2022. Children placed handmade flowers on the stone. You can visit the stone at St Mary’s - it is positioned in front of the tree standing to the left of the Cenotaph. The next step is to raise funds for a plaque which will explain the history and significance of the memorial for all to read.

RHS Experts Visit Salford Allotments
Q&A Session
Earlier this year Salford Allotment Federation received a surprise email from Jim Arbury based at RHS Wisley asking if we could arrange a visit to different Salford allotments for 6 members of the RHS Fruit, Vegetable & Herb Committee followed by a question and answer session. The RHS experts came from different parts of the country, had their own areas of expertise and some had allotments. One member used to manage the Lost Gardens of Heligan and is the team leader of the Kitchen and Paradise gardens at RHS Bridgewater.
Allotments in Eccles, Poorlots in Cadishead, Weaste in Eccles and finally Buile Hill Community Allotments in Buile Hill Park. Towards the end of this busy day we held an open to all Q&A session in Seedley Pavilion in the Park. Questions ranged from “where do I start and what do I grow as a newbie allotmenteer?”, “why isn’t there fruit on my gooseberry bush?” to “how do I prune the grapevine in my greenhouse?” as well as questions about how to manage different diseases.
Salford Allotment Federation is the umbrella organisation for the self-managing allotment sites on Council land so we were able to arrange visits to a few very different sites for the friendly experts to experience as well as giving allotment plot holders opportunities to chat with them and ask for advice.
The whole day was enjoyable and interesting. We were impressed with the friendliness of the experts, their knowledge and willingness to help us learn and the new, unexpected ideas that they gave us. We can’t wait for the next visit although this could be some time away as their aim is to visit as many different parts of the country as they can.
On 18th June 2022, the RHS team visited Tindall Street

n times past a popular entertainment at church concerts were monologues, often given in Lancashire dialect. These feats of memory often had a moral outcome. Similarly, dialect books were popular and often given as prizes. At the turn of the twentieth century some of the most popular were written by John Ackworth. John Ackworth was the pen name of Rev. FR Smith, who was the minister of Methodist churches in Swinton and Eccles. He gained the inspiration for his stories from the places and characters in the local area and despite names being changed they can be identified. It is generally believed that the village of Boothstown is the scene of his most lovable works. The famous "Clog Shop Chronicles" were set in the village of Beckside, where the only public buildings were the little chapel and the schoolhouse. About the centre of the village stood the Clog shop, where the clogger, Jabez Longworth, known to all as "owd Jabe" worked with his apprentice, Isaac. "Owd Jabe" was the chief official at the chapel and his shop was the rendezvous for the village worthies, where all the local gossip was turned over. Here on most 12 ON OUR DOORSTEP
These characters are met in three of John Ackworth's books, "Clog Shop Chronicles", "Beckside Lights" and "Doxie Dent". It is believed that the originals of most of these characters were members of the St. Paul's Chapel, Swinton, and were well known personalities in the Station Road area. The actual clog shop was that of James (Jabe) Allen in Chorley Road. In the time of Mr. Smith's ministry (1891-93) it was numbered 175 and always had two rows of clogs in the window. Repairs etc. were done in the 'back place' and it was the habit of the minister to call in every Monday morning to have a chat with the clogger and his cronies. Jethro was the village knocker-up, and went his daily rounds with unfailing regularity every morning, except Sunday, between the hours of four and six. Over his shoulder he carried a long, light pole, with wire prongs at the end, with which he used to rattle at the bedroom windows of the sleepy factory hands until he received some signal from within that he had been heard. "Bob! Dust ye'r? It's five minutes to six! Ger up, tha lazy haand (hound). If tha dusn't ger up Aw'll come an poo' thi aat o' bed." (Beckside's 'Knocker-up' . . . . Why now is the time to sell your property! The price of property coming to the market has hit a fifth consecutive record of £368,614 on average. As well as this, buyer demand for available properties is more than double (+113%) the pre-pandemic five-year May/June average. Buyers are currently being presented with plenty of new options, with the number of properties entering the market increasing by 7% over the same period last year. Are you thinking of moving home in 2022? Research has shown that sellers who want to be moved into their new home by Christmas need to come to market in next few weeks due to the current conveyancing backlog. After agreeing to a sale, it currently takes 150 days on average to complete a purchase, which is 50 days longer than this time last year. By listing your property this summer, you have the
best chance of finding a buyer and completing the transaction before the end of the year. More than 500,000 homes are currently under contract, a massive figure, 44% higher than this time last year. Ready to start your property journey? Your local branch of Miller Metcalfe is just a stone’s throw away. We understand that selling or letting your property is more than just a valuation and marketing. Our expert team are on hand to assist you from start to finish. Most importantly, we offer you an array of flexible options and tailor-made packages, giving our clients that extra personal touch. Inheritance Tax & Estate Planning Why Do It? Inheritance tax (IHT) is a tax paid by a person who inherits the money or property of another person who has died. In the United Kingdom, Inheritance Tax is a “transfer tax” (i.e. a tax on the passing of title to property from one person to another) and it was introduced in 1986 to replace Capital Transfer Tax. The current rule is that IHT is paid on anything valued above £325,000. How much your beneficiaries pay depends on the value of your estate, which is worked out based on your assets (cash in the bank, investments, property or business, vehicles, payouts from life insurance policies), minus any debts. There is normally no IHT to pay if: The value of your estate (using the calculations above) is below £325,000 (called the “nil rate band”) OR You leave everything over £325,000 to your spouse, civil partner, a charity or a community amateur sports club If you give away your home to your children or grandchildren the threshold can increase to £500,000. If none of the above applies, your estate will be taxed at 40% on anything above the £325,000 threshold, or 36% if you leave at least 10% of the value after any deductions to a charity in your will. If you leave everything to your other half the nil rate allowance for their estate doubles to £650,000 when they die.space up or close it off as and when required. WHY DO WE HAVE IHT? IHT has always attracted controversy. The idea behind its introduction is that without it you perpetuate inherited wealth, so the children of the rich stay rich. IHT redistributes income so some of the money goes to the state to be distributed for the benefit of all. The argument against it is that when money's 16 ON OUR DOORSTEP
earned, tax is paid at the time, so to pay tax on it again isn't fair. But whatever your views, IHT is a fact of life (or death) and with rocketing property values in recent years many people have been caught out by the inheritance tax threshold. So it makes sense to work out how it will affect you and your beneficiaries, and whether you can soften the blow. This is known as inheritance planning. Essentially, it helps you strategically manage your wealth to maximise the amount your beneficiaries gain. Initially you should read up on all the rules and once you have a good idea of the value of your estate then you can start estate planning. The benefit of this is huge, especially since the government has frozen the inheritance tax rate for now. Efficient estate planning can help reduce the value of your estate, so that you have less tax to pay. In some cases, it could even bring you below the IHT-paying threshold. Then you won’t have to pay any tax. Speak to an expert to see what your options are. You can find more information at www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax.

THE SALFORD CANCER SUPPORT GROUP:
OUR FIRST OPEN DAY SINCE COVID by Geoff Hamilton, Volunteer
The Salford Cancer Support Gardening Group held its first post-pandemic Open Day at the Macmillan allotment on 19th June 2022. After such a long wait, it was good to have so many old friends back under the gazebo and looking over our plants again. A popular feature was the fundraising raffle where a multitude of unusual and exciting prizes were on offer and the cake stall was a ‘honeypot’ for children of all ages. The Rhubarb Gin turned out to be a popular tipple! We limited the shot sizes, very tightly, since an allotment is no place for imbibing excess alcohol. The event was kindly sponsored by ForHousing. The day was also a celebration of the Queens’ Platinum Jubilee and we were most grateful to them for their contribution to the proceedings.
Tea, coffee and cake were on offer to adults, for a small donation, and a variety of soft drinks kept the children happy, along with all the cake they could eat! There were lots of offers from visitors to buy our standing crops, but since June is just a little early for our harvest we had to explain that most things were not ready just yet, even though they did look splendid at this time in the season. Also, we are not allowed to sell produce from the plot, but we do give a lot of our harvests away to good homes. The Salford Cancer Support Group allotment is located at Tindall Street Allotments, Peel Green, Eccles M30 7DF. It’s for people who have been affected by cancer, whether patient, family member or friend. Experience is not required. Referrals must be made by Macmillan Cancer Support at Salford Royal.
LEARN MORE ABOUT TINDALL STREET ALLOTMENT GROUP Tindall Street Allotments in Eccles are managed by a Committee and Trustees on behalf of Salford City Council known as Tindall Street Allotment Group (TSAG). Our aims include: To develop a thriving community asset for the cultivation of plants and to raise the profile of the TSAG site as a valued Greenspace to safeguard the future of the site for existing members and future generations. To promote community engagement, education and healthy living through the activities of allotment gardening and work with the local community and established groups and organisations within the VCSE (Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise) sector. We work with people with long-term/chronic illness and mental health problems, and also voluntary and 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP
community groups. The main site consists of private allotments, however we have communal areas and community growing spaces. We want to engage with and support our local community and promote health and wellbeing through gardening across Salford. We also want to protect and safeguard wildlife on site and increase local biodiversity. We already work with partners and groups who have dedicated spaces on site, including Salford Cancer Gardening Support Group, Cromwell House, Incredible Education, Health Improvement Service Volunteers and this year we have created an allotment for armed forces veterans in Salford. We invite groups to get in touch if we can support their aims by offering them spaces to grow. Email: info.tindallstreetallotments@gmail.com (Information taken from the Salford CVS website)

Home Improvement
If you're thinking about how to add more room in your home and can’t, or don’t want to move, here’s a short guide to the best ways to achieve it. After all, moving costs can make buying a larger home somewhat unrealistic. So improving rather than moving makes good financial sense, especially since it may increase your home’s current market value too.
1) Improve the Interior Layout by Knocking Through You don’t always need to extend to increase the space or to add value to a house, sometimes it’s the layout or room size that is wrong. Improving the spatial flow or maximising the views to the garden can open up the space and bring in more natural light. An architect can suggest ways to improve an open plan room layout, perhaps by removing internal walls to open up a through living room or a kitchen-dining space, or to create a larger room from several smaller ones.
2) Create an Open Plan Kitchen Diner & Living Space One of the most popular home transformation projects to add more space in house is knocking through between an existing kitchen, dining and living room to create an open plan kitchen-diner. This is better suited to our modern lifestyle of treating our kitchens as the hub of the home, not only for eating and cooking, but relaxing entertaining and family time too. If you don’t want to go completely open-plan, consider installing sliding pocket or bi-fold doors between rooms, which will enable you to open the space up or close it off as and when required.
3) Add an Extension Extending your home can take many different forms. You don’t always just need to extend outwards; you 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP
5 Ways to Add Extra Space in Your Home – Without Moving
could also consider extending upwards by adding one or more storeys. Then there are cellar spaces to extend down into, or the most popular is extending to the side of a house with a conservatory or a porch.
4) Convert Your Loft If your loft space is suitable, adding a loft conversion will offer additional space for an extra bedroom, home office, or playroom. This may be as simple as installing skylight windows, laying down a proper floor and adding a staircase to make the existing room habitable, or adding a full dormer extension. The latter will give you extra headroom, but position these to the back of the property rather than the front or side, so that they are less visually intrusive.
5) Convert Your Garage It can be tricky to disguise what a converted garage once was, but don’t let that put you off as they are great for creating extra ground floor space without the higher cost of an extension and, with good design, a garage conversion should blend seamlessly with your existing property. A good way to add extra space in a house is to ensure a garage conversion can be used for a kitchen extension into an open-plan kitchen-diner, or as a playroom, office or home cinema. The good news is that under current planning regulations many types of home extensions and improvements can be carried out under “permitted development” rules, but it’s always best to get advice from a planning expert before embarking on any major home improvement project. UPDATES FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM
Hello all from your local Little Hulton Police Station Team! We hope you have all been keeping well! It’s now time for us to give you a few exciting updates. Firstly, our Police Officers and PCSO’s have started holding Police Surgeries at the Bethany Family Worship Centre in Little Hulton, M38 0EN. There will hopefully be many more to come so please keep a look out on our Facebook Page ‘GMP Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook & Worsley’ and on our Nextdoor profile ‘Salford Police’ for more updates as to when they are being held. It is vitally important for us to hear what concerns you the most, so we hope to see you there! In addition, our PCSO’s have been very busy patrolling the neighbourhood and have successfully located several stolen vehicles in the area. As we try to tackle ASB involving off road bikes, we really need your help in gathering the intelligence. If you know someone who is behaving in this way, please report your observations to us so we can act. How can you help? Continue to report crime and suspicious activity

to us via our website, live chat service or 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency) and NOT VIA SOCIAL MEDIA. Another exciting update is that we are happy to announce and welcome a new addition to our Little Hulton Policing Station, PC Salt who will be covering the Walkden North area. I am sure that you will join us in welcoming PC Salt to the area.
Keep your cars safe this summer Unfortunately, we continue to receive reports of vehicles being broken into. The offenders are using technology which overrides the central locking and allows access to the vehicle. Faraday bags are pouches lined with layers of metallic material that can block the key's signal and we highly recommend using them. Please be aware of this method of entry and take care not to leave valuables in your vehicle. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us: Email: SalfordNorthWest@gmp.pnn.police.uk Phone: 0161 856 5035 Social Media: GMP Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook & Worsley

SALFORD ALLOTMENTS: UPDATE by Geoff Hamilton
Salford City Council staff met with the Salford Allotment Federation at Tindall Street at the end of June to discuss allotment projects across the City.
Blackleach, Walkden made a successful bid for grant aid and are looking at what new facilities and provision they can make, which is brilliant news!
Beechfield, Swinton was a hot topic since Brunel University and the Tea Group (featured in the JunJul22 issue) have been carrying out an experimental planting of heavy metal tolerant plants to see if the plants can clean the site of pollutants and whether the metals can be reclaimed at a profit.
Charlestown, Broughton is the subject of extensive discussions and hopefully decisions will be made soon, so that planning for an early start can begin.
Brunel has submitted a report and the SCC staff plan to meet with the University in July. An educational unit could be included in the development alongside the replacement allotments.
Clifton, Swinton allotments have agreed a plan for relieving flooding, which has plagued part of the site for a long time, and their management team is now working on this and other issues.
Burgess Farm, Walkden is progressing and although the allotments will be built at the end of the scheme, there is every chance that this site will be a great addition to facilities in the area.
Buile Hill allotments are moving forward with many new ideas. The next meeting will be even more comprehensive with new sites and projects being considered.
Ordsall allotments now have a well functioning committee and the group is making very good progress with its plans.

IS IT TIME TO RECESSION-PROOF YOUR SMALL BUSINESS?
Finance Advice for Small Business Owners
Many of us have already been feeling the pinch as the cost of living continues to rise and we can't see it coming to an end very soon. With inflation soaring, some experts are predicting another recession. As a small business owner, what can you do now to ensure you have the best chance of riding out the storm? Here are 3 tips for all businesses, worth putting in place, recession or no recession. Tip 1: Put money away into a separate account to cover your monthly business expenses. At a minimum build up enough funds to cover 3 months of costs, ideally work up to 6 months. It may take a while to save that much. Start with a small amount and increase it over time, but make a start! Tip 2: Set aside a % of your income for tax too. As a starting point, work out what % you paid in 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP
tax last year and start putting that away now. Later, spend more time estimating how much profit you will make this year and work out a more accurate tax figure. Tip 3: Find ways to minimise your expenses. Put a couple of hours aside to go through the last 3 months bank transactions and receipts. How much was truly essential business expenses and how much wasn’t? Do you have subscriptions that you don't use? Do you pay for software that doesn't help to generate income or efficiencies in your business? How many lattes did you buy? Do you outsource work that you could do yourself? Start now, set your business up to be healthy and be well prepared for the oncoming waves!
