Editor’s Note...

A belated Happy New Year! I hope you’ve had a great start to 2022 and the new year’s resolutions are still going strong! I’m doing well with cutting back on the cakes and keeping up with the running. I completed ‘Couch to 5k’ in November and am now tentatively aiming for 10k. I’ve never been a runner, so have truly surprised myself by taking it up at 50!

Stories behind the Headstones at St. Mark's Church, Worsley

THE BRIDGEWATER WALTZ I

n June 2019, I spent a day at the Salford Archives, going through some dusty brown boxes, looking for something specific in relation to the history of St. Mark's Church.

In a large envelope, I came across a piece of music entitled The Bridgewater Waltz. At that point in time, I was curious to hear what it sounded like, so I arranged for a photocopy and brought it to Jeff Ramsdale, musical director and organist at the church, the following evensong. Of course, he just sat down and played it on the organ!! And what a story has developed around it! Composed in 1903, it was 'Dedicated to the members of the staff connected with the Bridgewater & Ellesmere Estates.' So questions like who? what? why? when? how? circled in my head. That year marked the centenary of the death of the Duke of Bridgewater and the expiry of the Bridgewater Trust. It was written by Thomas Tyrer Smith, a Commercial Clerk working for the Trust, and who was buried in our churchyard in 1912, aged 76. Research was also being carried out at that time into some of the names on the gravestones. The name Thomas Tyrer Smith seemed familiar, but could not be placed. Suddenly, a connection dawned. The headstone itself is quite unusual in design. The name at the top is Elizabeth Emma, wife of Thomas T. Smith. The name Thomas Tyrer Smith is the third name etched into the stone. T.T.Smith was born on 25 October 1835 in Wolverhampton, the son of a Template Worker. He lived at Rock House, in the village, from around the mid-1860's and prior to his death. Members of his family continued to live there, or nearby, until at least 1979! Elizabeth Emma (four children) died in 1867, and he married a second time - Elizabeth Penzer (three children) in Worcester in 1872. His family remained in Worsley, at least until 1979. 12 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The music has probably lain dormant in the archives for many decades. It was formally presented once more and played on screen as part of a presentation by Jeff Ramsdale at the Salford Histories Fair in October 2021. At the foot of the front cover, it states that 'Copies may be had from the Composer, Rock House, Worsley. Price 1/- nett.' One of the visitors that day was Geoff Oliver. He introduced himself as a presenter for the 'Going Classical' slot on Oldham Community Radio and he expressed a wish to broadcast this piece. His programme broadcasts on 99.7FM on a Thursday at midday. To listen to the piece, you can find a recording produced and edited by Jeff Ramsdale easily on YouTube under its title ‘The Bridgewater Waltz’. Or simply Google ‘The Bridgewater Waltz by Thomas Smith’. Thomas Smith composed another set of pieces for piano which will shortly be recorded.

We have some talented orists in our area who will make up a bespoke oral collection. A Magazine Subscription A gift that lasts all year round and gives you a wealth of choice. Pick a title you know she loves – or nd an inspirational one that could introduce her to a new interest, or even keep her going on a New Year’s Resolution. A Photo Shoot Treat mum to a session with a local photographer for a family photo with her favourite child (that’s you!) Brothers and sisters and grandchildren could be included too. A Fancy Frame For the glamorous photo you took of her last summer, a special card or document, or choose a gorgeous print by a local artist. Quality Time How about a pamper session for you and mum to enjoy together? It doesn’t have 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP

to be a full-blown spa day (although that would earn you many Brownie points!) a manicure followed by a glass of something nice at your favourite local pub could work. Something Sparkly What mum wouldn’t like a nice piece of jewellery? Pick something pretty you know she’d like or buy a gift voucher and go along to help her choose. We’ve got some fab jewellery shops in our local towns so you might nd a unique piece. A Meal Out This would be a welcome treat on Mothering Sunday. Be sure to plan ahead though as the best venues will be booked up well in advance. Learn Together Why not book the two of you onto a local one day course or craft workshop? It’ll be a good time to bond and potentially discover some shared talents!

Cakes & Chocolates A no brainer, right? Bake or make your own (there’s plenty of time for a few practice bakes), or look locally for something a bit di erent – you could even get your cake personalised. A Good Book A romantic ctional tale to get lost in, or a page-turner thriller she won’t want to put down – the choice is yours. A Great Day Out Lots of options locally to enjoy exploring; an interesting stately home, an attractive garden, or grounds – and nish in a tea shop! You might want to cut straight to the tea shop (we’ve got lots of those locally!) or make a garden centre the focus of your day – the best ones sell drinks and cake too after all! Tickets For Something To Look Forward To A trip to the theatre, a comedy, a musical performance, a lm… the options are endless. We’re lucky to have so much talent and choice on our doorstep. TOP TIP If mum has a cat, it is essential that your bouquet does NOT contain lilies as these are extremely poisonous to cats. WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

THE RESTORATION of BUILE HILL MANSION The Buile Hill Mansion Association was formed in early 2018 with the aim of reopening the Mansion. Our biggest step forward happened in mid to late 2021 when remedial work started on the Mansion and then in December 2021, plans for the Mansion were revealed to the public.

Salford City Council and the Buile Hill Mansion Association have worked together on the plans which will go forward for planning permission early in the year. Once approved, work is expected to start later in 2022 and due to be completed in December 2023.

Salford’s Registry Office will move from the Civic Centre in Swinton into the first and second floors to register births, marriages, and deaths and provide a unique venue for events.

The Mansion Association is currently restoring the Mansion’s former ‘Garden for the blind’ back to a sensory garden and will host weekly wellbeing sessions every Sunday from 10 am until 12 pm in the garden as well as other regular community events.

The building will be made fully accessible and a new car park on part of the depot site will serve the Mansion, Buile Hill Park banqueting suite, and the park itself.

planning for the Future Will and Probate Services are a specialist paralegal law firm who deal exclusively with the issues that concern us all in later life, Will Writing, Probate and Estate Planning are at the core of our services and since 2005 we have advised thousands of clients in the country. Everyone needs to have the right Will in place, yet most people leave the future of their assets to chance. Equally Lasting Powers of Attorney are a cornerstone of later life planning, but many people have made no provision for them to manage their affairs if they become sick or lose capacity. If you have suffered a bereavement our Probate services are a cost-effective alternative to using a solicitor or bank to deal with the estate. We take the pressure off and always work to an understandable fixed fee. As we get older, we naturally tend to become richer so the right planning for Inheritance Tax and care provision needs to be put in place, yet again most people will leave this fundamental planning undone.

We also deal with the Court of Protection if a relative has lost capacity and can offer a professional and low-cost estate administration and probate service if you have suffered a bereavement. Funeral plans can be an important part of wealth planning in later life and we offer a selection from the biggest providers in the UK. Call Will and Probate Services today and get your later life plan in place. During these difficult times we are also offering the opportunity to take instructions from our clients via secure video link or over the telephone. House & Home

Time to Downsize or Rightsize? When you think of your retirement, does it include staying in your current home? Or is a move to a smaller home on the cards? Downsizing is not just for baby boomers, empty nesters or the newly retired. There are many reasons to sell up and move to a smaller property. Sometimes, the idea that "less is more" is what compels homeowners to downsize. There are many younger couples that want to alleviate their cost of living, or change their living conditions, or make their lives easier with a more accessible home for health or mobility needs – sometimes called “rightsizing”. Or sometimes divorce, separation or bereavement may mean selling the family home. The benefits of downsizing or rightsizing If you are retiring you might want to move somewhere you can relax and take advantage of a slower pace of life. If you picture your retirement in the countryside or by the sea, downsizing could free up the extra cash you need to make it happen.

If downsizing means a smaller mortgage, you’re likely to have more disposable income to spend on other pastimes, take up a new hobby, or travel more. Or perhaps you can make some improvements or alterations to your new home. Fewer rooms and smaller spaces mean less time needed for cleaning and maintenance. You’ll be able to reduce the number of household tasks, leaving you more time to do other things. Many people who have downsized or rightsized say they did so because their previous homes were too difficult to maintain.

food, and consumer goods. Reduced consumption is also a good environmentally friendly habit to acquire. Things to consider Any potential house move can be an emotionally charged decision. In a recent survey by Hargreaves Lansdowne nearly 40% of retirees rejected the idea of downsizing because they were too attached to their family home.

If your intention in downsizing is to release cash to fund your new lifestyle then you will need to take the cost of moving home into account. According to comparemymove.com the estimated cost of moving house in 2021 in the UK is £8,951. Space restrictions in your new home may also mean selling, giving or throwing away treasured furniture, books, and mementos. Some people form emotional attachments to possessions and can't bear to part with any of them. A smaller home may mean less room for guests. Hosting a family Christmas or having grandchildren to stay might become a challenge. Downsizing or rightsizing will require a lot of thought and planning and may not be for everyone. But at the end of the day you may want to remember that you could be freeing up your home so another family can fall in love with it. And you may be giving yourself the chance to fall in love with something new and exciting all over again. NB: This article isn’t personal advice. If you're not sure what's right for you, talk to an Independent Financial Advisor.

A smaller home also means lower utility bills. There is less wasted space or empty rooms, and less square footage decreases the amount of energy required. Reducing energy has the added advantage of being better for the environment too. If there is no place to put it, you're much less likely to buy it. That means you may acquire less clothing, 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

How the end of the Stamp Duty Holiday is affecting the property market Widdows Pilling LLP

At the end of last year, house prices slipped from record highs and saw the biggest drop since January 2021 after the stamp duty cut came to an end. Properties coming to market were worth £342,401 across the UK in the four weeks to 6th November, Rightmove data showed. This was 0.6%, or £2,044, lower than the month before and it was the first full period studied since the Government’s stamp duty cut finished at the end of September 2021. There is usually a lull in the market during the run-up to Christmas. Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s director of property data, said, “Sellers who come to market this close to the distractions of Christmas often have a pressing reason to sell, so naturally price more attractively to grab the attention of prospective buyers who may

22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

be otherwise occupied.” But estate agents said homeowners were already preparing for the frenzy in internet searches for houses that usually starts on Boxing Day, suggesting that there could be a surge in sales in the new year. Indeed Halifax expects strong housing price levels to be maintained – the average UK house price is £272,992, almost £34,000 higher than at the start of the pandemic – but that growth in 2022 would be between flat and 2%. However Bannister said some sellers were getting photos taken before putting up their Christmas decorations so that their listing is ready to go – watch this space. House & Home

Make use of your loft

Many of us only set foot in our lofts to grab the box of Christmas decorations, yet it can be a space you could make much more use of. A loft is a useful storage area for personal possessions we want to keep long term, but don’t need regular access to. For many of us, it’s a case of storing cardboard boxes in a rather haphazard way, pushed through the loft hatch and positioned as carefully as possible. If you want to make more of this storage space, and to make this safer, then installing wooden loft boards is an option to consider. With a bit of careful research, someone who is competent in DIY skills could carry this out. However, it is important to bear in mind the depth of thickness of the insulation material and to ensure that its effectiveness is not compromised by fitting solid panels across it, resulting in heat loss. SAFE ACCESS If you’re going up into the attic it’s wise to have someone on hand to hold the ladder and for you to pass items to. For added safety, especially if you regularly access your loft, it’s a good idea to fit a loft ladder which folds away up into the loft hatch. With hand rails for stability, and easy access features, they really make sense. LOFT CONVERSION Turning your loft into a room could open up all sorts of options - a spare bedroom, a hobby room, or home office for example. If this appeals, it’s time to speak to an expert as there are all sorts of conditions to be considered. Depending on the type of conversion you have in mind, you may need to seek planning permission. Even if this is not the case, your plans will 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

definitely need to satisfy building regulations. So, it’s a good idea to approach an experienced local architect or a builder to talk through your plans to confirm your position in terms of permissions. There are all sorts of things to consider, from fire safety to sound insulation, ensuring the joists are adequate to support the weight of a new room, access, and so on. And, if the work you’re planning is going to affect a wall that joins your house to your neighbour’s, you will need to have a Party Wall Agreement. You can find further information on the government planning portal website: www.planningportal.co.uk. Read more at www.which.co.uk/reviews/loft-conversions

CREATURES IN SITU If your loft is currently home to bats, a protected species, you will first need to have a bat survey and may be required to obtain a mitigation licence to carry out work. The Bat Conservation Trust (www.bats.org.uk) will be able to advise. DID YOU KNOW? Government guidelines recommend a minimum 270mm thickness for loft insulation.

Our Community

SALFORD VETERANS BREAKFAST CLUB Salford Veterans Breakfast Club was the first if it's kind in Greater Manchester when it opened at Pendleton Church in January 2015 and celebrates it's 7th anniversary this month at it's current home at The Magdalene Centre in Winton. Initially set up by three local Army veterans, its purpose has always been to provide a place for ex-servicemen and women of all ages to come together on a weekly basis to socialise and enjoy an inexpensive meal with people who have the shared experience of being in the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy. Families, carers and friends have always been welcome. As it grew, members organised other activities such as annual trips to the NMA in Staffordshire, Remembrance services, mini-breaks away and Christmas lunches. Old friendships have been rekindled and many new ones made on a Saturday morning over the following years. Funded Saturdays mainly by grants and donations 10am-1pm and run by the veterans themselves and volunteers, over 450 ex-servicemen and www.afvbc.net/clubs/salford

women from all over Greater Manchester and beyond have signed in since the first breakfast was served. In 2019, it won the much coveted Spirit of Salford Award for Best Age Friendly Project. Like many similar groups, the Covid pandemic hit hard and the club was open for just 3 weeks in a 15 month period. Sadly, quite a few regulars passed away during this time and the task of building the numbers back up to pre-Covid levels hasn't been easy. However, the organisers are determined to move forward and hope that once the dark clouds of Covid have lifted, their efforts to recruit new regulars over the past 6 months will start to bear fruit. No matter which branch of the Armed Forces or Merchant Navy they've served in, be it regular, reservist or National Service, there will be a warm welcome awaiting them. THE PLOTTERS: LOOKING BACK AT 2021 AND FORWARD TO 2022

by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support allotment volunteer 2021 started, fairly timidly, with us all wondering whether anything would be different in our virus infested world. It wasn’t - the start of the year was a shambles and it continued downhill from there. I always enjoyed listening to ‘The Crazy Gang’ on the radio but, I never believed I would live with them, for ‘real life’, in year long episodes. To be fair, no-one knew which way to turn or, what was coming next. We had no crystal ball only the NHS to help.

We held a Covid compliant Christmas celebration under the gazebo where mince pies, shortbread, kichels and tea was shared with many plotholders. Hopefully, this is the first of many get-togethers on the plot.

The Plotters cussed the weird weather that badly affected our early cropping plans and then suddenly the hot, dry summer came to upset everything by leaving us with hardly any rainfall. At least we were kept on our toes and carrying watering cans is honest exercise.

Incredible Edible Salford has now moved to its new home in Winton. We wish the new venture all the best for the future. The plot it occupied has now been shared between the community groups who previously worked on the site.

It was a fraught year on the plot - we are a sociable lot and keeping apart was difficult. Matters were made worse as the community facilities were kept closed and there was an eerie feel about the site. In November the members of the allotments held a Special General Meeting informing the committee that they were unhappy with the running of the site. The committee quickly resigned and a new one was formed and has taken on site management in a totally different manner. The committee is looking into forming some starter plots, smaller than full sized units, so that new growers can try their hand at plotting before taking on a larger site. The Community Cabin has been cleaned and re-opened - the rotted office floor has been replaced and the room brightly decorated. Our big new planters near the car parking area are filled with compost and fully stocked with a range of spring flowers; the bulbs were generously donated by a neighbour on Tindall street. The community raised bed has been repaired by the new site managers, ready for planting-up in spring giving the community volunteers a fresh start for their planting programme in 2022.

The new committee is looking at what grant aid may be available to improve facilities on the site and we hope to see the benefit of this during 2022. There are many more plans being put in place and having resolved the problem with the solar power installation, we are now getting an income from power production and topping up the national grid!

JOBS FOR FEBRUARY... Prepare beds for sowing to help aerate, drain and warm the soil. Mix in plenty of homemade compost or composted manure. Clean and set up cloches ready to warm the soil for early sowings and to protect seedlings and young plants. Plant rhubarb in a bright, open position. Dig deep, adding plenty of rich, homemade compost. Sow broad beans undercover, for a rewarding harvest in late spring.

JOBS FOR MARCH... Weed your plot - dig out problem weeds and hoe regularly to prevent annual weed seedlings growing. Protect plants from pests, especially slugs in warmer, wet weather. Cover brassicas with fleece to ward off hungry pigeons. Cover beds with cloches or black plastic to warm the soil for early sowings. Buy trays of young veg plants that you don’t have the time or space to grow from seed. Sow seeds and get planting! ON OUR DOORSTEP 27

GMP SALFORD NORTH WEST:

KEEPING YOU SAFE IN 2022 Happy new year from your local neighbourhood Policing team! We wanted to share a few tips with you all to keep you, and your belongings safe.

bridleways or any other land accessible to the public, such as parks, beach front walkways and car parks.

E-Gifts Many of you will have received Christmas gifts over the festive period, and this may include E-gifts. We ask that you make sure that they are securely stored to avoid burglars from getting their hands on them. We highly recommend you register your property for FREE on Immobilise.com; Immobilise helps Police identify the owners of recovered property every day.

If you are caught using an e-scooter on a public road or space, it is a criminal offence and you could be prosecuted, under the Road Traffic Act 1998. The parents of children using e-scooters may be responsible for any fines incurred. So please be mindful, and for more information regarding e-scooters please visit the Government website.

E- Scooters Another common gift or purchase are E-Scooters, as great as they may seem, they are recognized as powered transporters and fall within the legal definition of a motor vehicle under the Road Traffic Act 1998. As a result, you will be committing an offence if ridden in a public space. It is not currently possible to insure privately owned e-scooters which is a requirement for driving motor vehicles, meaning it is illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces. So contrary to popular belief, it is against the law to ride an e-scooter on any public land, including pavements, cycle lanes,

Good News... We have welcomed two new PCSO's and two new PC's to our neighbourhood Policing team. We are delighted to have them on board, ready to help us tackle the problems that our neighbourhood are making us aware of. I am sure that you will join us in welcoming them to your local Police Station. Another piece of good news is that there have been increased patrols around the Walkden Town Centre to tackle anti-social behaviour, with the help of your local Policing Team and special constables. If you are on Social Media, follow us on Facebook (GMP Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook & Worsley) or on the Nextdoor app for updates. 32 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The centre is a friendly hub where everyone is welcome, whether to access the food or to peruse the good as new items including clothes, shoes, toys, household goods and bric-à-brac (mostly priced at just 50p!).

Food is collected daily by volunteers and delivered to housebound residents or made available in the centre for people to collect. Customers can choose to make a small donation to help with the running costs of the centre, but this is purely voluntary. In addition, the centre liaises with other groups who help the homeless, victims of domestic abuse, careleavers or simply families or individuals who are struggling, in order to redistribute the food and other necessary items.

Opening times: Monday to Thursday: 9.30-11.30 am Friday/Saturday: 9.30am-1.00pm

Only £895 for a fully fitted electric door.

Our Community

EXCITED TO BE BACK FOR 2022! It’s more than Jam and Jerusalem at Salford Angels WI - although sometimes we do both. After the lockdowns of the last two years, we are excited to launch our programme of events for 2022 and there is something for everyone. Our monthly meetings feature a talk or workshop for members and some of the subjects for this year will include a self defence demonstration, a colour stylist talk, dance demo and yoga and mindfulness. We also have lots of fun trips planned for the coming year, including visits to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, RHS Bridgewater and an alpaca farm. We will be serving tea, cakes and other goodies at events including Armed Forces Day in Winton and there

will also be a performance of war time songs from our choir. If you would like to learn a new skill, we have a number of groups that members can join, like our choir, gardening group, craft and walking groups and our book club. We meet at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month at St Luke's RC Church Hall on Swinton Park Road, Salford. New members are very welcome!
