NEW WEEKLY BIN COLLECTIONS AVAILABLE IN SALFORD!

Bin Kings are o ering a new service to the Salford area. Local councils have signi cantly reduced the number of weekly bin collections resulting in wheelie bins frequently over owing and a real problem for local residents.

Wheelie bins being emptied once every three weeks is just not enough for many families and that’s why Bin Kings have started a weekly rubbish bin collectionservice.

Bin Kings will come and empty your bin each week that the council do not collect your refuse, meaning that your bin gets emptied every single week, resulting in less stress and problems for you to dispose of your refuse. Not only that, but they do it on the same day of the week as the council to make it easier to remember.

Bin Kings simply charge £25 per month for this service

and with no contract and no hassle, this is the convenient way to deal with your rubbish problem. Some months they will come twice and other months three times, but still only charge the at monthly fee regardless.

To help the environmental and to keep costs down they operate environmentally friendlier smaller vehicles rather than large HGV trucks the council operate. By keeping costs down, they are able to o er this service at the low monthly charge to yourselves rather than the higher costs involved with operatingstandard HGV type refuse trucks. Of course they are fully licensed by the Environmental Agency to carry waste.

At Christmas we provide new toys and gifts for children aged 0-14 years old, to make sure they have something special to open on Christmas Day. Our Christmas Appeal will launch on Monday 10th October, and we will be accepting Christmas donations from then until Friday 9th December. Donations of toys, gadgets, craft sets, stationery, hats/gloves, pyjamas, books, chocolate, wrapping paper and Sellotape would be much appreciated. If you’re able to donate, please try to get yours to us as early as you can, to enable us to help as many families as possible.

SMILESalford: The Happiness Project LAUNCHES IN WALKDEN

Smile Salford is launching in Walkden this October!

Through a series of fun and friendly workshops for 5-11yr olds, based around crafts and learning we will teach our young ones calming techniques, address issues such as peer pressure, academic pressures, bullying, self belief and con dence, anxiety, parental separation anxiety, bereavement, plus soooo much more and all done with the best of fun!

S MILEstands for Special • Motivate • Inspire • Love • Educate

Smile: The Happiness Project is the brainchild of Gemma Heaton. Following her experiences she wanted to help her own children deal with worries, anxieties and just generally teach them how to talk about what is concerning them, what these feelings mean and how to overcome and deal with them…

What started as something just for her family then

theirfriendstoextendedincludeandfamilies

and before long parents on the school run were asking for Gemma’s help with their children and that’s how Smile was formed!

If you think your child could bene t from joining one of our workshops, please drop us a message for more information. We have a variety of full day sessions or weekly evening sessions.

Home-Start Trafford, Salford and Wigan:

SUPPORTING FAMILIES AND

CHANGING CHILDREN’S FUTURES

Home-Start is one of Greater Manchester’s leading family support charities, working with parents and their children in local communities across Salford.

In an ideal world you wouldn’t need a charity like Home-Start. Parents would be able to bring up their children free of stress and di culties. But issues such as poverty, lack of family support networks, poor mental health, illness and disabilities can make parenting a challenge.

This is where Home-Start steps in; it recruits and trains local people as home-visiting volunteers, who visit a family at home weekly, o ering a mix of non-judgmental emotional and practical support.

By giving the gift of time, a shoulder to cry on, a practical pair of hands, or a listening ear, you could help to literally change the lives of Salford families.

We train all of our volunteers before they are matched to their rst family, which means that all of our volunteers are fully prepared. But it’s not rocket science, what we look for is people who have parenting experience and the willingness to o er a couple of hours each week to a local family.

Our next training course will run in January 2023 Dates:10th and 24th Jan

Venue: Salford City Rooster, Moat Hall, Hallworth Road, Eccles, M30 7LS

Time: 9:30am – 2:45pm

FLORAL TRIBUTE

Evening will come, however determined the late afternoon, Limes and oaks in their last green flush, pearled in September mist.

I have conjured a lily to light these hours, a token of thanks, Zones and auras of soft glare framing the brilliant globes.

A promise made and kept for life – that was your gift –Because of which, here is a gift in return, glovewort to some, Each shining bonnet guarded by stern lance-like leaves. The country loaded its whole self into your slender hands, Hands that can rest, now, relieved of a century’s weight.

Evening has come. Rain on the black lochs and dark Munros. Lily of the Valley, a namesake almost, a favourite flower Interlaced with your famous bouquets, the restrained Zeal and forceful grace of its lanterns, each inflorescence

A silent bell disguising a singular voice. A blurred new day Breaks uncrowned on remote peaks and public parks, and Everything turns on these luminous petals and deep roots, This lily that thrives between spire and tree, whose brightness Holds and glows beyond the life and border of its bloom.

A JOHN NEWBERY BOSCHETTI

s you enter the churchyard from the church hall via the gate, look immediately to your left and the rst gravestone, which lies at, bears the name of John Newbery Boschetti. Also in the grave are his widow, Agnes Freeland Boschetti (1816 - 1890), and his sister-in-law, Catherine Waddell Boyd Synge (1832 - 1892), widow of Major Robert Follett Synge. Some of these names are a little unusual and have prompted some research.

John Maria Boschetti Newbery Boschetti, of Orchard House, Ellesmere Park, Eccles, was buried in the churchyard on 27 September 1880, aged 78. His widow, Agnes Freeland Newbery Boschetti, was buried at St. Mark's on 13 March 1890, aged 73. They had, in total, 9 children - 1 son and 8 daughters. Their rst born, William Muter Boschetti, was born in St. Lucia. The latter 6 girls were all baptised at St. Mary’s, Eccles.

The early life of John Newbery has proved to be very interesting, though he has proved to be a little elusive at times. He was born in Gibraltar in 1802. His full name was John Maria Boschetti Newbery Boschetti, and at each of his daughters’ baptisms and marriages he signed his name that way. He was, in fact, the godson of Giovanni Maria Boschetti, (1758?-1834) of Gibraltar, who arrived there from Lombardy, via Genoa, and became a wealthy businessman. It is believed that Giovanni never married, though it was thought that he may have had an illegitimate daughter, Juana. In his will, there was the proviso that, should this lady die without issue, the trust which he had set up for her would pass to his godson, John Maria Boschetti Newbery. In due course, at his death in 1834, all his wealth passed to John Newbery. A truly fascinating account of Giovanni and the Boschetti inheritance can be found on: chapter-3-1784-giovanni-maria-boschetti.htmlwww.gibraltar-intro.blogspot.com/2012/03/

John Newbery appeared in St. Lucia, where, on 3 February 1845, he married, by special license,

Miss Agnes Freeland Miller at the residence of her uncle, the Hon. Wm. Muter. Their rst child, a son William Muter, was born on the island the following year. By the time their rst daughter was born (Fanny Newbery on 14 February 1847), they were clearly back in the U.K., since she was then baptised at Manchester Cathedral on 22 May 1847. In the 1850s, he was in business, in partnership with James Whitehead, as merchants. John was in fact a Drysalter.

His eighth child, Isabel Laura, married Rev. Sir Francis Arthur Stanley olkes, 5th Baronet, on 27 September 1893 at West Kensington. Francis was, from 1900 until 1937, Honorary Chaplain to all our

Dream Doors provide customers a unique alternative to kitchen replacement.

While we do offer complete kitchen installations, we’ve made our name through kitchen makeovers, in many cases offering our customers significant savings over other kitchen manufacturers and suppliers. We achieve this by working with each customer individually to build a kitchen that exactly meets their needs.

A common misconception is that lower prices mean a cheaper alternative, whereas the products we supply are often vastly superior to our competitors. We achieve this by where possible, retaining existing structures, in some cases only suppling the doors, in others we replace appliances, worktops and floors to achieve the desired finish. In each case we work closely with our customers to find the right balance.

Our doors and worktops are made to measure, appliances and sinks come from top name suppliers, combine these and you’ve got the recipe for a kitchen makeover that couldsave you as much as 50% off a full kitchen replacement, installed in as little as two days.

“You don’t build a conservatory by first knocking down the house”, why should it be any different with a new kitchen?

How to Prepare Your Garden for Winter

Autumn in your garden is all about picking up and packing down before the arrival of winter. This is your opportunity to get rid of dead vegetation left over from the Summer, tidy your borders, clear out your gutters, and more. Here are our top tips to make the most of your Autumn garden. A little work now will be repaid come Spring!

1) Give your lawn a final trim

Grass will grow more slowly over the Winter months, but it won’t stop completely. Autumn often brings increased rainfall, and waterlogging will make mowing a challenge even before the winter frosts set in, so be on the lookout for a dry day to tick this one o the list. Now is also the time to give your lawn a feed with an Autumn lawn food. This will help strengthen the grass during cold and wet weather.

2) Clear debris

Whether it’s fallen fruit around a tree, or foliage from roses, now is the time to remove it. This will discourage disease and ensure that sunlight is getting through to the grass or plants below. Rake leaf litter from lawns and borders and clean up your vegetable garden. Make sure any leftover crops are removed and all weeds are cleared.

3) Bring vulnerable plants indoors

If you have tender or half-hardy plants in your garden, bring them under cover now to keep them safe from frosts. If bringing plants from outside into the home, don’t forget to check the compost carefully for insects and snails rst.

4) Plant bulbs

Spring might seem far away now, but it’ll be here before you know it. So plant spring- owering bulbs

now. September is the best time to plant them, but any time in autumn is ne if you missed the early boat. Plant tulip bulbs in November once the soil has cooled down.

5) Store garden furniture

Left to the elements, sun umbrellas will become discoloured, and barbecues begin to rust. If you lack su cient garden storage buy some protective covers or tarpaulin - they're relatively cheap, and a de nite investment. Plus it’s always a special moment when you take the covers o again on the rst warm day of spring!

6) Get unclogging

Increased rain plus fallen leaves can clog gutters and drains, so make a point of removing any built-up debris now to avoid trouble later. The weight of the debris can cause the gutter to pull away from the fascia board which also causes damage. Between water over owing and the weight of debris, the wood behind your gutter can rot and cause serious leaks.

7) Repair fences

Get ready for Winter winds by taking stock of wooden fencing. Pay particular attention to fence posts - if you catch potential problems early enough, a simple fence post repair kit can save you the time and e ort of replacing an entire panel following a winter storm.

Now you can curl up inside with that cosy blanket and mug of hot chocolate. Nothing left to do but relax, safe in the knowledge that your garden is fully prepared for winter.

Do a last minute in the Year Christmas, on top of that, your Assessment Return?

Here’s an early reminder; the Self Assessment Tax Return deadline is M idnight 31st Januar y 2023 for filing online. This is your last chance to submit your tax return for 2021/22 PREPARING YOUR INFORMATION NOW!

If you haven' t already calculated your profit/loss for the tax year 6 April 2021 to 5 April 2022, star t this week! Doing it all at last minute is stressful and there's always more to do than you think.

1) Set time aside each week to catch up with your finances How much time will depend on how far behind you are and the size of your business. You need to record all your ins and outgoings before you can work out your profit or loss. That means all your sales and income, the costs that go into providing your ser vice or produc t and all your business expenses. If there is too much to do, or you find it too over whelming, could you afford to hire a bookeeper to do it for you?

2) Once you’ve caught up, create a positive habit and set aside regular time to keep on top of it. Estimate what your Tax bill is going to be. Do you have the funds to cover it? I f not, set up a separate bank account and star t putting aside money away week ly or for tnightly to ensure you have enough when you reach 31st Januar y 2023. of your assessment and late payment of taxes.

l Alleviate the stress of doing it ALL last minute. Relax and enjoy Christmas and New Year with the family, without it hanging over you.

l Feel calm and satisfied that you have the money there to pay the tax man.

Top tip! Never leave submitting your tax return to the ver y last day in case of technical hitches on the Gov website It ‘ll be inundated with people trying to submit their returns last minute.

SUMMER 2022: THE HOT, DRY ONE!

This summer has produced some real dilemmas for allotmenteers. Hot dry conditions, not good for growers or crops, but we had lled all eight of our water butts over spring and were able to keep most plants happy’ish.

Our onions and courgettes have been abundant with record results but our swedes have turned into leggy apologies whilst the beetroot and radish happily shared the same plot and ourished. The weather keeps us all under Weobservation.haveour

rst outdoor grapes and the best g harvest we could have hoped for, provided the red ants don’t nd a way to beat us to gather them in.

Whilst we were ministering to the crops we carried on plotting and debating our future plans - nothing new here, plotters are always looking to the next cycle of work! Our group has decided that all of our old, diseased fruit trees need to be culled, since they are producing very poor crops, so we will replace them with new, miniature root-stock this autumn. Our advancing years will then help us to be able to reach the fruit easily and we can place them in pots big enough to be moved around our plot if we need to relocate them because they are unhappy with where we site them originally.

We have started looking at what the internet has to say on the matter and checking what may be best for our site. There are lots of options to consider and arrangements to make before next spring. We’ll be sure to report on progress and success, or failure, as the case may be!

Regrettably, our strawberry bed didn’t do well this year so, like our fruit tree. We have dug the plants up and will replant with a fresh crop ready for next year, again we will let you know what success we have after June 2023.

AUTUMN ALLOTMENT JOBS

OctOber

• Harvest the last of the courgettes and runner beans, as well as pumpkins and squash. It's also the time to harvest maincrop potatoes.

• Sow your peas and broad beans.

• Stake your brussels sprouts with sturdy cane to stop them blowing over in heavy winds.

• Improve soil with a green or well rotted manure.

N Ovember

• Plant garlic, onions and shallots and cover with eece to protect them from the colder weather.

• Prune blackcurrants, redcurrants, whitecurrants and gooseberries bushes between now and March.

• Cut down autumn-fruiting raspberries.

• Protect brassicas from pigeons. Cover with mesh, lift it clear of the plants so birds can’t peck through.

• Harvest crops including carrots, cabbages, sprouts, celeriac, celery and cauli ower.

Hello Salford North West! We hope you have been keeping well and have been enjoying the summer

to share with you the below and hope it can be useful and of interest.

Good News…

Firstly, we wanted to talk to you about Operation Avro in Salford with a successful day of action! A force-wide initiative to ght the crimes that matter most to our communities, deployed extra resources and specially trained o cers to Salford on Tuesday 23 August 2022.

Alongside making arrests and seizures, district o cers targeted anti-social behaviour and burglary hotspots whilst o cers from the force’s Specialist Operations Branch focussed on the likes of making our roads safer for all who use them. The Roads Policing Unit recorded 68 tra c o ences alongside making 24 seizures and seven arrests.

As part of the Safe4Summer initiative, o cers also partnered with agencies, including other blue-light services and Salford City Council, to engage with schools and community groups about a variety of issues. Chief Inspector Lucy Smallwood, of GMP’s Salford district, said: “We’ve really focussed on what

Advice…

Secondly, we wanted to talk about holidays.

We know it can be tempting to share holidayyourpics on social media but be wary of doing so while you’re still away as it could advertise the fact that your house is empty. Share when you return instead. Also, as the sun is out, keep burglars out! Make sure you lock your doors and windows, even if you’re only in the garden.

matters to you the most, the issues and individuals that blight our communities.

“Our ght doesn’t stop here though – we will do everything we can to prevent and reduce crime, harm and anti-social behaviour to keep people safe in Salford, not just today but 365 days a year.”

Recruitment…

Greater Manchester Police is also recruiting! If you want to help us make your community safer, apply to join the police now! You can nd more details on w ww.gmp.police.uk under the ‘CAREERS’ section.
