ODL is pleased to welcome Paul back from his sabbatical – several weeks traveling in Central and South America. No doubt we will be hearing lots about his adventures over the coming month!

&Good Luck … We are sorry to say goodbye to Roger Juer who has decided to step down as a volunteer with ODL and will no longer be involved with representing ODL. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all the support he has provided to ODL over the years and wish him well in new endeavours.

In the news… July has been a busy month – with so many events celebrating Pride. I hope you were able to get involved with some of the activities and had a fabulous time. Our consultation event around developing our support to the LGBT* community around dementia generated a lot of interest in ODL. We hope to develop support for both LGBT* people with dementia and their carers. If this is an issue affecting you or someone you know, please let us know by emailing sally.knocker@openingdoorslondon.org.uk. This an example of our work being supported by a funder [the Big Lottery via Ageing Better in Camden] and a private donation. Two lovely supporters held an auction at their joint birthday party and donated the proceeds to ODL. They were really keen to support this area of our work. Last month also saw success on the funding front which will allow us to recruit a Training and Policy Coordinator, Admin Assistant and Befriending Support Officer. This is really exciting as these are three new posts – and will allow us to further develop our services – both to the LGBT* community and to mainstream providers, supporting them to develop more LGBT*-friendly services with staff who better understand the needs and experience of our members. To support this work, we need you! If you would like to get involved in representing Opening Doors London – then have you considered becoming an Ambassador? We have a lovely group of members who do a wide range of activities including having stalls at community events, attending events and conferences to ensure the voice of older LGBT* is heard, joining our Partnerships Team at corporate events, attending our training sessions and sometimes talking to the media. You can be involved with what interests you. If you would like to learn more – have a look at our website www.openingdoorslondon.org.uk/vacancies and scroll down to find the role description. If you have any questions about the role – please do get in contact.

Rainbow Memory Café update The consultation event on the 23rd June was attended by approximately 50 people with a wide range of professionals from health and social services and the voluntary sector. Jenny-Anne Bishop talked about the particular challenges facing Trans men and women needing support from care staff as they age and quoted one woman as saying that the day she needed care would be the day she would implement her suicide plan; a very sad indictment of how little confidence some LGBT people have. Roger Newman, MBE who cared for his partner David with dementia and started the original Alzheimer’s Society lesbian and gay carers’ network stressed that there was still more to be done to ensure that LGBT people living with dementia feel safe within mainstream services. Mike talked about Tom, his partner of 40 years who has dementia and some of their experiences of prejudice in their local community. Tom was in the audience and prompted Mike on something he had forgotten! Mike said how much he was looking forward to the start of the new Rainbow Memory Café in the Autumn so that they can meet other LGBT people affected by dementia. Most felt that the key aim of the Café would be for peer support and to reduce isolation, although information, social activities and advocacy and campaigning may also be important. We still need to decide on a venue, and received a number of generous offers from organisations. Our current thinking is that a gay venue in central London would be preferable if we can find one for free or low cost! There was a very lively and positive atmosphere throughout the meeting and a real sense that we have many supporters who will help us promote the service and find people who might be interested. If any ODL readers know of any LGBT people with dementia or LGBT carers, please do encourage them to contact me. We hope to have the first meeting of the Café in early October. I am away now till mid- August but if you send me an email to sally.knocker@openingdoorslondon.org.uk, I will pick it up on my return.
