January 2017
Happy New Year! My involvement with Opening Doors London in 2016 has given me great pleasure. It has also given me a growing sense of pride. I have followed the work of ODL since its start, and I have always known about the good work it has done over the years – especially in alleviating isolation and providing social opportunities for older LGBT* people. But what I have learned since I have become more involved is how rich and diverse the work of ODL – from befriending to walking groups, from coffee mornings to visits to art galleries, from involvement in LGBT* history month to health and well -being information fairs. We are a small organisation with a small permanent staff, who work enormously hard for ODL. But our impact far exceeds our size – thanks to the membership, the volunteers, our ambassadors and a growing number of partners. And we are only just beginning! 2017 promises to be an exciting year for ODL as we gear up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the partial discrimination of male homosexuality in July 1967. We are sponsoring a number of special events, as well as the usual programme - and look out for a members’ meeting in March. In the meantime, I wish you all an enjoyable and happy 2017, and I look forward to meeting many more of you during the year. Jeffrey Weeks Chair of Trustees ODL

Behind the open door …
ODL50 Paul Webley –
LGBT* Befriending Coordinator I work with a team of over 70 Volunteer Befrienders, who get matched to an older LGBT* client who feels isolated or lonely, they then visit the client either weekly or fortnightly for a cup of tea and a chat. I am most passionate about working with those housebound clients who are really very difficult for us to access, the people who, for whatever reason, no longer leave their homes. Letting them know the Befriending Service exists is and will always be my biggest challenge. I really enjoy being able to reduce the feelings of loneliness and/or isolation of older LGBT* people who find themselves at home alone. I get to meet so many extremely interesting people from all walks of life, across London. I studied for a degree in Spanish Language at 40. For my 50th in May 2017 I am taking a sabbatical and going to travel around the world for 6 months!

2017 marks an important year for all of us in Opening Doors London, as it marks 50th anniversary of the enactment of Sexual Offences Act in July 1967. Many of our members were profoundly affected both by the situation pre-1967, and by subsequent changes that were brought about by this legislation. Since then, we have all seen a shift in attitudes towards both age and the position of LGBT* people in society. We want to mark this milestone anniversary at ODL, both by looking back to ’67, but by also celebrating how far we have come, and how far we have yet to travel – for all the LGBT* community. We have commissioned a new film about Opening Doors from our friends at Flexible Films; plus, we are planning an exciting programme of events under “ODL50” logo. A full programme for January – July will be available soon as well as in February; details of the programme covering the rest of the year will be published. For the first event – see Friday 27th January. Warm regards, Chris Barlow Member/ Volunteer/ Ambassador

CANCELLED DUE TO CHRISTMAS BREAK: Peer led coffee and tea social at The Breakfast club in Battersea Rise
Miles: 2 approx. Sights to enjoy on route: Sales at the smarter stores in Stratford City Westfield. Better bargains in old Stratford Shopping Centre. Underground Stratford Market Adventure! Plus a possible brief visit to a historic pub. All followed by a visit Wetherspoons The Golden Grove to benefit from the affordable Steak Deal for those who choose. (Other venues are available!)
Tuesday 3rd January
Post- Christmas Stroll and Steak with Clive: A new Christmas tradition emerging!
Clive says “I am a great believer in Christmas yet as LGBT* as for many single people it can be a lonely time. Many of us are dispersed geographically and transport is limited or no existent. We may fear visiting friends is an intrusion. It can so easily become the exact opposite of what Christmas is about. At pension age we may have lost family members and friends and can easily feel isolated. Christmas meals may be great but by January we come to crave a bit more variety and cannot face yet more turkey in its diverse forms.
Lunch plans: Numerous alternatives for coffee and meals or join us for the more affordable Steak Deal. Meeting location point (including transport info): Inside Westfield Stratford City by main entrance at the lowest level which aligns with the Underground and Mainline services exit and the bus terminus. NOT the main bus station of Stratford Town and DLR side. Meeting time: 11am (Reassemble at 1pm at ground floor Waitrose coffee area to visit the Stratford Town Shopping centre followed by lunch.) Walk end time (approx.): 4pm. End location point (including transport info). Within Stratford close to the tube, mainline, suburban and numerous bus routes. No booking necessary. Just turn up.

Anchor Housing/ ODL Art Group Chigwell Court
I am hoping this event, together with that of Thursday the 5th January will be a counterbalance. A time where we all enjoy warm Fellowship, love and genuine care for each other. That is what Christmas is really about rather than tedious commercialism, sometimes tacky, sentimentality, travel adverts and pleas from charities for support. But it is also a time to think of others less fortunate than ourselves, especially LGBT* Page 4 of 14
The art group will be held in the communal room. Basic materials will be provided for the informal dropin session. Volunteer artists on hand.

Sunday Lunch & Film Club Henderson Court Resource Centre Join us for a lovely home cooked lunch before we watch the film. Quartet (2012) 1h 38min
“It’s all Jean’s fault! Her arrival at a retirement home for aged opera singers opens up old wounds and grudges that threaten to undermine their annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday. As past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on. Based on Ronald Harwood's stage play of the same name, QUARTET is a wickedly comic film about redefining old age and growing old with hope; demonstrating how art illuminates life and the human

Opening Learning group: A trans perspective on the inequities of the Equality Act and how diversity doesn’t promote real equality Room A75, Queen Anne Building, University of Greenwich This will be a discussion of Chryssy’s PhD thesis on the Equality Act and how its structure reflects a neoliberal concern with promoting ‘empty diversity’ rather than real equality. The thesis suggests that those most recognised and protected by such legislation as the Equality Act are the already relatively privileged, who have sufficient fungibility to navigate an increasingly marketised social environment. The corollary is that the most marginalised are the least recognised and protected. There will be a presentation followed by a discussion on the issues raised. 3pm – 5pm

Daniel Fulvio and Martin Moriarty are the joint artistic directors of LGBT theatre company Inky Cloak, whose latest show, We Raise Our Hands in the Sanctuary, is a friendship story set in the underground gay disco world of 1980s London that is running at the Albany in south London during LGBT History Month in February. Daniel and Martin will talk about Inky Cloak’s previous show, Cover Her Face, which recast the John Webster’s Duchess of Malfi as the trans heroine of a 1950s ’honour-killing’ tragedy, and about the background and inspiration for their new show – and will particularly welcome memories (good, bad or ugly) of the 1980s London gay scene in the discussion afterwards. Thursday 9 February 2017 Outings in Theatre: We Raise Our Hands In The Sanctuary at The Albany The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford, SE8 4AG “New best friends Michael and Joseph reckon they can do better than what’s on offer in the London gay disco scene of 1981.So one on the decks, one on the lights, they build their own underground club, where devotees can escape the racism, hardship and homophobia that still stalk the city’s streets. And it looks like they’re going to conquer the world until ambition, addiction and the dawning onslaught of AIDS threaten to tear them apart. At a time when nightclubs are being closed across the capital and rampant gentrification is sweeping away LGBT pubs and bars, We Raise Our Hands In The Sanctuary tells its uplifting story with drama, contemporary dance and the club sounds of the 1980s. It’s a celebration of the crucial importance of queer spaces and the power of gay friendship.” Book your own tickets directly on www.thealbany.org.uk/ or via the Albany Box office on 020 8692 4446 Meet Liam in the bar/ foyer from 7pm before heading into the auditorium at 7.15pm Performance starts: 7.30pm Image credit: Photograph: Leon Csernohlavek / Treatment: The Design Mill
