Member’s Meeting Report April 2017

ODL has come a long way in the past few years. Five years ago there were 5 groups. Today there are 43 meeting each month. We now have 1200 members, supported by 200 plus volunteers, and 6 staff. Since last year we have also become a separate charity with 7 trustees drawn from a wide range of LGBT* experiences. This is the context in which we held the first Members’ Meeting which we hope will become an annual event. Some 80 members attended what turned out to be a lively, informative and enjoyable afternoon, beginning with an icebreaking and chaotic game of People Bingo, followed by presentations about the growth and financial situation of ODL, round table discussions of five key questions about the direction of ODL, culminating in a delicious tea generously provided by our hosts for the day, the consulting firm Mercer. The round tables and final feedback brought lively exchanges. Members were overwhelmingly positive about their experience of ODL, welcoming its wide range of activities, its success in getting people together, providing a befriending service, offering what one round table group called mutual education and ‘brain activity’. Staff and volunteers were praised for their hard work and support of members. pg. 3

June 2017

The financial presentation was welcomed for its transparency. There was very little negative feedback but a number of helpful proposals were made which staff and trustees will do their best to take forward. These included: Financial stability: Members recognized the difficulties in the funding situation in that our major grants do not cover 100% of the funding need to carry out the activities the grant commits us to, which means we always need to find co-funding, and are always running fast to stand still. But they were anxious to ensure that we always kept to ethical funding sources. The need to bring in independent sources of funding through donations, bequests etc was stressed, and members were encouraged to contribute where they could to the fundraising appeals. Several members emphasized the importance of not relying entirely on electronic means of giving, and promoting more traditional means of collection better. Diversity: Currently ODL membership is 69% male, 29% female, and 2% trans. It is still overwhelmingly white. Members were keen that we continue to pursue a broader membership base and to reach out more effectively to underrepresented groups. The expansion of ODL into south and west London was welcomed, and various suggestions were made for increasing awareness of ODL in these areas (eg circulating leaflets in libraries and doctors’ surgeries). Communications: There was a general feeling that communications generally could be improved, and further work needed to be done in welcoming new members to meetings, and making existing members feel at home. As chair of ODL I would like to thank Mercers for generously supporting the event; the director, Alice Wallace, and colleagues for organizing the event so efficiently; my fellow trustees for their commitment to ODL and for hosting the day and above all, members for participating so fully in the event, and for their enthusiastic support for ODL.

Monday July 10th

Bridge and Scrabble Club Lumen Café Beginners welcome! Scrabble boards will be provided.

2pm – 4pm PRIDE is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It's the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers' families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all. Warchus’s film centres on the rumpled workers on the picket line in the Welsh village of Onllwyn, in the Dulais valley, and their unlikely allies: a flock of gay fund-raisers who tramped the streets of London, buckets in hand, collecting money for supplies and fuel.

Men’s Walking Group As another special treat, Peter has persuaded his City of London Guide colleague, Brigitte Downey to offer us the chance to enjoy her newest walk, 'FROM THE FORGOTTEN TO THE FAMOUS', an Irish Writer's Walk from Temple Gardens, in and out of Fleet Street to the Wedding Cake Church at Ludgate Circus.

June 2017 And without the thousands of print workers who toiled in dirty, deafening dungeons, changing the words written in ink to printed books and newspapers, Fleet Street would never have become famous worldwide. Come with Peter and Brigitte for a walk amongst the ghosts of the forgotten and the famous who shaped this unique and fascinating corner of the City of London. If you would like to join the walk you can either: Text or leave a message on the walking group mobile number which is 07804 329 416 but you will need to wait for a reply before you can be sure that a place has been booked for you, or better still Book a free ticket upon Eventbrite (using password "fountain"), which will instantly guarantee you a place: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mens-july-2017walking-group-from-the-forgotten-to-the-famoustickets-35126270621 These walks are proving popular so if you find yourself unable to come along, having booked, kindly let us know so that your place can be offered to someone else on the waiting list. Meeting time: 2.30pm

Men’s Speakers Night Henderson Court Resource Centre

This enchanting part of the city is a place of beauty and a joy forever, thanks to the labours of the forgotten legions of Irish workers who transformed and rebuilt it down the centuries. Many of their compatriots, poets, writers and journalists, some still famous, some largely forgotten, also worked their butts off here. One immortalized the loneliness of being ‘the last rose of summer’ (Thomas Moore). His poetry inspired Schumann, Berlioz and Benjamin Britten and his Melodies are still sung in pubs worldwide. Another, who managed to leave ‘the pavements grey’, won the Nobel Prize for literature. A third missed the boat to America but ….. She Stooped to Conquer. pg. 10

The Gay Men’s Dance Company (GMDC) was founded in September 2015 by Alex Scurr a London based dancer, dance teacher and choreographer. The GMDC offers a creative outlet; a place to express yourself in a safe and supportive environment while keeping fit, socialising and enjoying a hobby. Though they started with just running Dance classes, they now also run Drama lessons, Choirs

Opening Doors London Events and London’s premier male only Pole Dancing lessons. They have classes of varying ability, and they all have a friendly, welcoming, open atmosphere where they encourage members to relax, be themselves, try new things, meet new people and have fun. The GMDC is so much more than just classes: they have an incredibly active social community; organise end of term parties, numerous theatre trips; have a monthly Brunch and Dinner Club and many other events. They’re getting more involved with the community and charities and Alex has now opened his own Foundation. They have many performance opportunities too between dancing at Prides, being invited by other acts such as drag queens or London Gay Big Band to perform with them and producing their own shows too.
