Development Coordinator Liam O’Driscoll is leaving Opening Doors London for pastures new. Here he tells us what he has enjoyed most about his role. Dear ODL members and volunteers,

I am delighted to have been able to work at ODL for the last two and a half years. It’s been a fun filled adventure with a lot of learning and laughter. The best thing about this job has been meeting such wonderful and interesting people. I’ve loved talking and enjoying the company of ODL members. Learning so much, being inspired and proud of who we are. These are experiences and memories I will cherish. I would also like to say a big big thank you to the amazing team of ODL volunteers I have been lucky enough to meet in this role. Without the support of our volunteers, none of what we do with our members is possible. So thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do to support our members. I and the rest of the staff team are very grateful for your continual support. I look forward to keeping in touch and hope to be back at the odd event in the future to say hello. This summer, Opening Doors London celebrates its very first birthday as a charity in its own right! Our special day coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act, a law that had a lifechanging impact on those who grew up in an era when homosexuality was illegal - the very people we support by providing over forty social opportunities a month and a Befriending service for the house bound. To honour these two landmark occasions, ODL is throwing a fabulous fundraising party on Friday 21st July 2017 in partnership with NBC Universal, at the film studios' Skyline venue in central London. Over stunning views over the capital, there'll be music, food and drink, celebrity guests, live performances and an auction of one-off prizes. Epping Forest Walk to be led by Clive Join Clive in a preparation exercise walk through Epping Forest for his attempt at a charity climb of ScaFell Pyke and other hills the following weekend. Clive hopes to complete his climb for Phase – supporting poor hill people in Nepal following the destruction of the 2015 earthquake. Miles: Up to 14. Many shorter, opt-out options possible. Mens' Group Walk 'Glad to be Gay: Camden's LGBT Heritage' As another special treat we have a walk to mark the 50th anniversary of the Homosexual Law Reform Act,1967, entitled, 'Glad to be Gay: Camden's LGBT Heritage'. It will be led by three of my colleagues from the Camden Tour Guide Association, Richard, Jo and Jean. You will remember Richard who led our highly successful LGBT walk in March. Starting at Goodge Street Station this walk takes in place in Fitzrovia, Bloomsbury and King's Cross which are part of Camden's rich heritage of sexual diversity. We will visit pubs which were notorious watering holes for the Bohemian demi-monde of the 1920s and 1930s. We will pass a theatre which was in the vanguard of lesbian and gay theatre and a bookshop which has been at the heart of the LGBT community now since 1979. We will visit the homes of the writers and artists of the Bloomsbury Set who challenged Victorian codes of behaviour and see the house where the great genius of polari Kenneth Williams was brought up. We will hear about how the LGBT community rallied together to respond to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and end our walk at Camden Town Hall where some of the first Same Sex weddings were joyously celebrated. He was educated at a comprehensive then at Cambridge University. He spent ten years making arts and entertainment programmes for ITV, including documentaries about Ian McKellen, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Will Young and Carol Ann Duffy for The South Bank Show. In July 2010, Matt stepped in front of the camera to become Channel 4 News’ first ever Culture Editor, a role in which he attracted acclaim for his coverage of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the Mercury Music Prize and the Turner Prize, as well as interviews with Grayson Perry, the Spice Girls, Pedro Almodóvar and Emeli Sandé, and an exclusive look inside Lucian Freud's studio following the artist's death. Exercise Walk and picnic in Stanmore Country Park Stanmore Country Park is a pleasant mix of grass and woodland, with a meandering footpath which will allow us to explore the park fully, and to enjoy views of London in the distance. There will be shade from the sun, in case of sunshine! There is one gentle but sustained climb in this walk, and a long gentle descent also, but our pace will be gentle and steady, with opportunity for a rest pg. 10

He has an international reputation for his books on sexuality and LGBT history. His pioneering study of LGBT* activism and identities, Coming Out, first published in 1977, has recently been republished in a revised and updated edition. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at London South Bank University, and is chair of Opening Doors London, the charity for older LGBT* people. -

It was the summer of the Beatle’s Sergeant Pepper, and of ‘All you need is Love’. It was also the summer when the love that dared not speak its name founds its voice. Or did it? Today’s older LGBT* people were the first generation to experience (limited) decriminalisation (for men) in 1967. Some saw this as the birth of our freedom. Most recognised it for what it was, a hesitant beginning not a triumphant end. So how important was the 1967 reform, and how did it affect LGBT* lives? June 2017 Kids being raised by same-sex couples are growing in numbers worldwide. We are in a GaybyBoom. But who are these kids? What do they think about having same-sex parents? And do they face different issues to other kids? At a time when the world is debating marriage equality, these questions are more pertinent than ever.

How to get there: Herne Hill station, ticket office exit, turn left, cross over to park at traffic lights. Enter park by gate near zebra crossing. Go straight ahead along path towards Brockwell Hall (yes, it is uphill, sorry). picnic bench to the left of the hall. 800yds.

This Australian documentary focuses on four children: Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham who come from homes where the parents are gay or lesbian. Told from the perspective of the kids, Gayby Baby is intimate and sometimes humorous account of four children and their families. Directed by Maya Newell, Gayby Baby follows their lives as the international debates around same sex marriage and parenting go on around them.

ODL is running three events as part of Pride in London and you can come to one or all of them. Come and join the fun with ODL! Parade The ODL bus will be parked near the front of the parade. We’ll leave the brunch as a group at around noon to join the bus (approximately 0.3 mile walk). As usual ODL will be in the front section of the march. The ODL group will board the bus at 11.30am. The bus usually sets off around 1pm. The usual end time is after 3pm in Whitehall. PLEASE NOTE:  You will need to register beforehand and collect your wristband from the Pre-Pride brunch if you’d like to join ODL for the Parade  Seats on the bus are allocated for those with mobility or access needs.
