When: 8th and 15th September (pm) BISHOPSGATE INSTITUTE, Liverpool Street What’s it all about?: Bishopsgate Institute is a beautiful Victorian Library and community building which houses an amazingly extensive LGBTQ archive and we have been offered two opportunities to see some of their treasures. They hold the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Archive (LAGNA), a national collection of over 300,000 press cuttings, a dedicated LGBTQ Library of books and journals, the Stonewall archive, Switchboard’s log books and campaign material, Gay News archive, Rose’s Repartee, OutRage archive material, the Feminist Library pamphlet, poster and ephemera collection, memorabilia from Pride marches down the years and much much more! So much that Stefan Dickers, the archivist, is offering two visits. Watch this space for more details as to what will be the focus of each visit, but it’s a walk down memory lane that you won’t want to miss! First Rainbow Memory Cafe. Monday October 9th 2-4pm at Tavis House Open to LGBT people living with dementia or LGBT people caring for someone withdementia. We will be offering an informal safe space for people to support each other as well as gain information and enjoy tea, cake and some fun. Our hope is to find a gay venue in future or a more informal environment, but this first meeting will explore some ideas for what group members might want. This event is not for LGBT professionals with an interest in dementia but we would be happy to hear from those who might want to offer support. For example we might invite LGBT speakers on dementia related topics.

FAREWELLS FROM JEFFREY WEEKS

Kate Hancock For the past five years or so Kate has been one of the most prominent faces of ODL, present at innumerable meetings across London, and bustling away in the office to build up ODL as one of our development officers. When she joined there were a handful of groups. Today more than forty ODL activities a month take place. Kate has played a major part in this massive expansion, most recently with the development of a stronger ODL presence in the City and in South London. Now she has decided to move on, and to seek new opportunities in Margate where she lives. We will miss her kindness and empathy, her huge range of contacts, the ease with which she speaks to and for our members, her close working with our volunteers, and her commitment to making life better for older LGBT* people. Thank you Kate and good luck for the future.

David Mitchell We are sad to announce that David has decided to retire as a trustee of ODL. He has been a stalwart of ODL since its beginning, as a member, a volunteer, an ambassador and for the past year as a trustee. He has spoken frequently and eloquently on behalf of ODL and has been tireless in his work for us. He was a founder member of the new board of trustees when we became a separate charity last year. His was always the voice of calm and reason, with a strong commitment to the community roots of ODL. He has now decided to ease off from some of his commitments. We all very much regret his leaving, but are delighted that he will continue as a member, and as a trustee of Age UK Camden and Ageing Better in Camden, with whom we still have very close links. Thank you David for all your services to ODL.You will be very much missed.

Staff team: September brings more change to the team. After 5 years of supporting members and developing new social activities across London Kate Hancock – the best networked lesbian in town - has decided to step away from working for us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all that she has done in expanding ODL so that we now provide members with social activities in more than 20 boroughs across the capital! I am delighted to welcome Juliet Chard and Adrian Beaumont to the team as our new Member Services Coordinators. They will be responsible for supporting our team of fabulous volunteers and sessional workers who provide such an amazing range of activities and events each month. Ali Nagyal will also be joining us to provide administration support to the training and consultancy team. Governance: ODL also has three new trustees! We are sad to say goodbye to David Mitchell: we will miss his warmth, kindness and gentle wit. I am delighted to welcome Marika Freris, Tony Jackson and Jacqui Gavin. All three will add to the wealth of experience and expertise of the ODL Board, and help us further develop ODL.

Service developments:

We have had some success over the summer, which means that we can develop our training offer. I hope you will join us over the coming months as we role out a series of borough-based events to support mainstream providers to better understand the needs and experience of older LGBT* people. Look out for updates on our website. If, in the meantime, you would like to join our lovely team of volunteer Ambassadors please get in contact! Last month we updated you about the work we are doing to support members of our community around memory loss. Our Rainbow Memory Café will be starting in October at a venue in Camden. If you know someone who might benefit from coming along to this new venture – please let them know and get them to sign up.

Happy birthday to us! Thank you to all of you who joined us at NBC Universal’s Skyline venue to celebrate our First Birthday! Not only did we have some amazing entertainment – but we also raised £8,000! And a big shout out to those who took part in the Media Event before the party. This has generated a lot of interest in ODL – and raised our profile hugely both in the gay and mainstream

press. We hope that this will encourage more people to join ODL and to support us financially. If you haven’t yet become a Friend of ODL – please do and contribute whatever you can afford so that we can ensure that membership – and most of our activities remains free. All you need to do is fill out the form on the back of the Listings – or go to our website and click the donate button.

Thank you!

SUNDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER Sunday Lunch & Film Club Henderson Court Resource Centre 102 Fitzjohn’s Ave, NW3 6NS (entrance on Prince Arthur Road) Join us for a lovely home cooked lunch before we watch the film: The Good Companions (1957) A touring variety troupe, the “Dinky Doos” are in financial trouble. An encounter with three strangers - Inigo Jollifant (a romantic, song-writing ex-schoolmaster), Miss Trant (a philanthropic spinster in search of adventure), and Jess Oakroyd (a down to earth, practical man recently made redundant from his job) leads to a change of fortune.

Re-launched with Miss Trant’s money, they tour England, at first with little success. Inigo falls in love with the troupe’s talented and pretty young girl singer, Susie Dean. The troupe is threatened with disharmony, but, due to Inigo’s intervention, and the marriage of the principal dancer (Jerry Jerningham) to Lady Parlitt (whose family “own a chain of theatres”), all turns out well for Susie by the end, when she triumphs in a lavish London revue, with the other members of “The Good Companions” in the audience, cheering her triumph. Cost £5. Booking for lunch essential. RSVP before Wednesday via: https://august2017odlsundaylunch. eventbrite.co.uk or calling 020 7239 0400. Social: 12pm Lunch: 1pm Film starts: 2pm

Women’s Film Night Committee Room 2, Camden Town Hall We will be showing : WE ARE THE BEST! Moodysson’s adaptation of Coco’s graphic novel about three young misfits growing up in early ‘80s Stockholm. Pixieish, mohawk-sporting Klara and her best friend Bobo are 13-year-old rebels looking for a cause. Despite having no instruments-or discernible musical talent-the two put all their energy into forming an all-girl punk band, recruiting their shy, classical guitar-playing schoolmate Hedvig as the third wheel. With tender affection for his young characters and the period in which his film is set, Moodysson paints an ebullient and sharply observant portrait of DIY spirit and growing up different. RADMILO (35) and MIRKO (30) are young and successful gay couple, and they would be a happy couple anywhere else except in - Serbia. They try to live discreetly but still, every day they are abused by the homophobic majority. Plus, Mirko is a gay rights activist, and his dream is to organize the first successful PRIDE event in Belgrade. But this is almost a “mission impossible”; in 2001, an attempt to hold PRIDE in Belgrade ended up in bloodshed. One decade later, the situation is not much better - nationalist and neoNazi organizations prepare another massacre in case of holding the gay parade, while the police refuse to provide protection for the participants. . THE PARADE, in a tragicomic way, tells the story about ongoing battle between two worlds in contemporary post-war Serbian society - the traditional, oppressive, homophobic majority and a liberal, modern and open-minded minority. Social: 6pm Film starts: 7pm (After the talk some members also head to a local pub for a drink.)

Chat group for gay and bisexual men affected by prostate cancer Prostate Cancer UK are the leading charity in the UK tackling prostate cancer through research, campaigning and providing information and support. With support from Changing Doors London, Prostate Cancer UK will be trialling an online chat group for gay and bisexual men and MSM who have been affected by prostate cancer. Ann Innes, Support Group Development Manager for Prostate Cancer UK explains: We know that people find a great deal of help and support in dealing with prostate cancer from being able to talk with others about shared experiences and problems. Although there are many prostate cancer support groups around the UK, we know that some gay and bisexual men may not feel comfortable about discussing some of their concerns or asking certain types of questions in these groups. There are a few great prostate cancer groups which are specifically aimed at gay and bisexual men and MSM but they may be too far away for some people to travel to. So we wanted to offer an alternative for people who would like to speak to others with similar experiences but who for whatever reason could not or do not want to utilise a face to face group. We will be trialling a “virtual” group chat which will take place once a month. Participants can choose to join the chat using video via webcam or camera on their phone or tablet or they can just join by audio/phone if they prefer not to be seen on screen. The groups will be starting in late September or early October. To register interest or ask for more information about the groups please contact Ann Innes by emailing ann.innes@prostatecanceruk.org
