March 2017

An invitation to all members The Board and staff of Opening Doors London would like to invite members to join them on Wednesday 26th April 3pm - 7pm, to mark the exciting beginnings as a charity in our own right. This will be a time to meet each other, share thoughts and experiences, and help develop our priorities. Mercers, one of our corporate partners, have kindly offered to host the event in their offices overlooking the Thames and provide afternoon tea. If you would like to attend please book here https://odlmembers2017.eventbrite.co.uk Please note that numbers are limited. Arrive by 2.45 to allow time to get through security! We really look forward to seeing you there. Annie Southerst Vice-Chair

Liam O’Driscoll Development Coordinator Liam works alongside Kate Hancock to ensure there’s a wide variety of opportunities for members to enjoy. He enjoys meeting members and chatting to them about their interesting and varied lives. Working with volunteers is also a highlight. We couldn’t do what we do without you! One of Liam’s biggest work achievements was a documentary theatre play about effects of the devastating floods of 2008. Ask him to tell you more about it!

Evaluation of ODL As you will be aware, ODL has commissioned an evaluation of our services. This will be taking place during 2017. We hope that this will help us to improve our services and also make a better case to possible future funders. We're looking for members who are willing to be interviewed. This would involve a short interview with one of our volunteer Researchers. The interview will be about your experience of ODL, what you get from membership (or hope to get), and how you think it could be improved. If you would be willing to take part please email Jenny: wildbloodjenny@gmail.com or pass your details to Liam or Kate.

Highlights in March Tuesday 14th ODL50 Men’s Walking Group led by Peter: From Mollies to Pride: An exploration of London's LGBT heritage. Sunday March 5th Y Sunday Lunch & Film Club

Henderson Court Resource Centre Join us for a lovely home cooked lunch before we watch the film.

I love you Phillip Morris Starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor.

March 2017 embarks on yet another crime spree, which ends in a 144 year life sentence. Based on the book by Steve McVicker, an investigator, 'I Love You Phillip Morris' is actually surprisingly faithful to the truth, as far as we can believe what Russell told McVicker is indeed the whole truth. Producer Andrew Lazar admits they had to take dramatic license, to mix-n-match and move events around. Yet pretty much everything in the film really happened. They just might have happened a little differently, chronologically or with greater detail.” Cost £5. Booking for lunch essential. RSVP before Wednesday via: https://mar2017odlsundaylunch.eventbrite.co.uk or calling 020 7239 0400. Social: 12pm Lunch: 1pm

Film starts: 2pm

Visit to Amersham Fairground Organ Museum 28 Plantation Road, Amersham Bucks HP6 6HJ

“Based on actual events. Steve Russell (Carrey) becomes a cop in a small-town, gets married and starts a family. But after a terrible car accident and bored with his bland lifestyle, he vows to be true to himself and comes out of the closet! Russell moves to Florida and turns to fraud to finance a luxurious lifestyle with bad checks and credit cards. Before long, Russell's criminal antics have landed him behind bars, where he encounters the mildmannered but charismatic Phillip Morris (McGregor). Smitten, Morris becomes the love of his life and Russell devotes himself entirely to being with him and building a beautiful future together, regardless of the consequences. Steve pg. 5

Join Tony for a visit to the Amersham Fairground Organ Museum open day. There are seven fairground organs (including organs by Gavioli, Marenghi, Hooghuys, Wilhelm Bruder Söhne and Gebr. Weber), well restored, and in good musical order. It is remarkable to see so many in one place, in working order; playing well known and lesser known tunes.

Tea, coffee, sandwiches and scrumptious cakes are on sale in the museum café.

March 2017 experimented with printmaking. Experience this extraordinary history through their eyes. Taking inspiration from the world around them – billboard advertising, global politics, Hollywood and household objects – American artists created highly original prints to rival their paintings and sculptures.

The American Dream: pop to the present Community preview @ The British Museum

Our good friends at British Museum have kindly offered us 20 free tickets to a Preview of this major exhibition of American prints. Trace 60 years of a superpower in this major new exhibition. The past six decades have been among the most dynamic and turbulent in US history, from JFK’s assassination, Apollo 11 and Vietnam to the AIDS crisis, racism and gender politics. Responding to the changing times, American artists have produced prints unprecedented in their scale and ambition. Starting with the explosion of pop art in the 1960s, the exhibition includes works by the most celebrated American artists. From Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg to Ed Ruscha, Kara Walker and Julie Mehretu – all boldly

Printmaking brought their work to a much wider and more diverse audience. The sheer inventiveness and technical ingenuity of their prints reflects America’s power and influence during this period. Many of these works also address the deep divisions in society that continue to resonate with us today – there are as many American dreams as there are Americans. Booking essential as tickets are limited. Please book via Eventbrite on https://odlbritishmuseum.eventbrite.co.uk or 07528 423 698 and waiting for confirmation of your tickets.

March 2017 about a Victorian scandal which shook the establishment to the core.

Tuesday March 14th Men’s Walking Group led by Peter: From Mollies to Pride: An exploration of London's LGBT heritage

Finally we will take a look at the raffish Bohemian sub-cultures of that area by visiting the notorious Fitzroy Tavern which was the headquarters of the literary, artistic demimonde of the 1920s and 1930s.

Start at the Eleanor Cross in front of Charing Cross Station This month we are putting on a walk which will give you a snapshot view of London's deep history of sexual diversity. It has been researched and devised by Peter’s Camden Tour Guide colleague, Richard Cohen, who is also a City of Westminster Guide. Richard will lead the walk and be assisted by Peter. We start in front of Charing Cross mainline railway station and the first part of our walk takes in the stories of John Wilmot the seventeenth century poet and libertine and Oscar Wilde. We will then meet the Mollies and Macaronis of eighteenth century Covent Garden and hear about an extraordinary French soldier, spy and fencing champion who challenged all the norms of gender identity in the eighteenth century. We will pass the heart of London's modern LGBT community in Soho and end our walk in Fitzrovia where we hear pg. 9

Opening Doors London Events We will end the walk, which will take about two hours, in one of the many cafés that Fitzrovia has to offer. Opening Doors London Events Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst, Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. Written, shot and acted with a riveting, hotblooded urgency that reminds you the struggle it depicts is not only an on-going one – but one which shakes up this most well-behaved of genres with a surge of civil disobedience.” Director: Sarah Gavron Stars: Carey Mulligan, Anne-Marie Duff, Helena Bonham Carter

Join Tony for a 1½ mile walkabout, in Blackheath. We begin our walk by going through the station car park (!!) and then follow footpaths, alleyways and streets (sorry, it's partly uphill) until we arrive at the Old Churchyard of St Margaret's, Lee. In the centre of the churchyard stand the remains of the west tower of the former medieval Church of St Margaret. It was probably built around 1080. The rest of the church was demolished in 1813; another short-lived church was built on the site but was demolished in the 1830s to be replaced by the new church across the road. Of particular interest is the imposing monument to Sir John Call, Baronet, of Whiteford, Cornwall.
