LISTINGS MAY 2018
Were you involved in challenging Section 28? On 24 May 1988, what was known as Clause 28 became the law and local authorities around the country were told that they must not ‘intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’. This had a particularly corrosive impact on schools, teachers and those working to support LGBT young people. Section 28 galvanized the community to come together to confront and oppose institutionalised homophobia. We are hoping to hold some events in May to mark the 30th anniversary and would welcome anyone who thinks they would like to contribute their experiences or who have any memorabilia or photos from the campaign. Please email: evelyn.pittman@openingdoorslondon.org.uk Jim Glennon our training manager is also interested in hearing from anyone who is willing to tell their stories about how it affected them. Please drop Jim from ODL a line via jim.glennon@openingdoorslondon.org.uk

OPENING DOORS LONDON SUPPORTS OLDER MEMBERS OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY: OPENINGDOORSLONDON.ORG.UK
Opening Doors London is looking for members to train as Ambassadors of our work to local councils, business corporations and community organisations. You don’t need qualifications but you do need to be a good communicator and confident to identify and talk about your life as an LGBT person. We are particularly interested at this time in anyone with a business, management or finance background, but all enquiries are welcome. There is an application process and training that needs to be undertaken but first steps are to make contact with Jim Glennon the Opening Doors London Training and Consultancy Manager at jim.glennon@openingdoorslondon.org.uk
Have something special we could auction at our birthday fundraiser on July 18th? Know a restaurant that could offer us a meal for two, an artist who could donate a work or a club that could donate membership? The more unusual the gift the better, as they attract interest from collectors, e.g. a script signed by a famous actor, the book signed by the author or the music manuscript signed by the composer. The auction will be online initially attracting buyers from around the world, so the more one-off the gift the higher the bids. Please contact: suzy.barber@openingdoorslondon.org. uk or call 020 7 239 0400 - Thank you!
Want to get fit, achieve something and raise money for ODL at the same time? We have places in the Royal Parks Half Marathon up for grabs and would love you to run for us. The event is on Sunday October 14th and takes in some of Central London’s most iconic open spaces and landmarks, including Hyde Park, St. James Park, Kensington Gardens, Buckingham Palace and the Strand. As the public ballot is now closed and the only way to take part in this fantastic sporting occasion is to run for a charity. Run for us! For more information contact Community Partnerships and Fundraising Officer Suzy Barber on suzy.barber@openingdoorslondon.org.uk or call 020 7 239 0400.

As ever, the ODL team has an exciting plethora of fun-filled activities for members! We are working partnership with Rainbow Grow to bring you a new gardening project in Hackney. The group are an LGBTQ+ gardening group who meet regularly in the borough and we have been invited to the beautiful Cordwainers Garden on Tuesday 15 May 5-7pm to plant pansies and take part in some green fingered activities. The ODL annual Members Event is taking place on Wednesday 30th May. This year we are hosted by Norton Rose Fulbright at London Bridge. This is a great opportunity to meet the Board of Trustees and full staff team , to hear about some of the highlights of the last year, and to contribute to future development of the organisation. And of course, there will be fabulous refreshments! If you volunteer for ODL I hope you will join us at our inaugural Volunteer Awards 2018, hosted by Macquarie’s on Friday 8th June. This is an opportunity for ODL to say a big thank you for all the support volunteers provide – whether by befriending our more isolated and less mobile members, supporting our many groups and events, helping us with administration in the office, being an Ambassador for the organisation, or a myriad of other things without which we wouldn’t be able to do a 10th of what we do. So if you are a volunteer please sign-up here or call the office. https://volunteerawards2018.eventbrite.co.uk
We are looking to develop our volunteer Partnership Team. If you are 50+, confident with your identity/ies – and with public speaking, and would like to talk to LGBT+ staff networks about the needs and experience of older LGBT+ people, what ODL does and how they can support us – please contact Chryssy for an application form. Last year we held our first birthday party at NBC and raised over £8,000 to support the work of ODL. We had such a good time that we are doing this again! If you would like to come along please book your tickets here: https://www. eventbrite.co.uk/edit?eid=44186535116 As ever, I look forward to seeing you at one of our events in the near future.

A gentle stroll of less than 3 miles that takes in a few easily missed interesting spots. We will set of from Stratford at 1.30 on the DLR which goes towards Canning Town and Woolwich for this walk with Clive. The Cody Dock is a fun and friendly small arts and education initiative just 4 minutes from Star Lane DLR. There is a small café on site at weekends where we will stop for coffee and rest.
We will pass the West Ham Substation which delivers 400,000 volt transmission facilities both overhead and underground. It serves the Olympic Park and local area. The transformers and insulators are something we are insulated from seeing in daily city life. The Dock is sited within one of the few remaining industrial areas within the city though much of it serves mainly for warehousing and recycling or as a garage for heavier equipment. Cody Dock which was part of the old Imperial Gas and Chemical Works. An inspiring project has enabled the dock to be opened to the public with the construction of a wooden swing bridge and community gardens. It is highly sought after development land!
