Wow! It is already the autumn! And what a fantastic line-up of activities and events have we got lined up for you! Not only do we have our full programme of social activities…but we are launching two new initiatives which we hope will meet new and emerging needs of our communities. Royal Parks Half Marathon The Royal Parks Half Marathon will be taking place on Sunday 8th October. We have four fabulous runners who have signed up to raise funds for ODL. Please check them out on our Get Involved web page and sponsor their endeavours! Rainbow Memory Café On Monday October 9th we are launching our Rainbow Memory Café. This is aimed at LGBT* people living with memory loss – or LGBT* people supporting others with memory loss. I totally understand that it can sometimes be difficult to ask for support around these issues – so this is an important group which will provide an informal safe space of people to support each other as well as gain information, eat cake and have fun! See the Listings entry for 9th October for more information about how to get involved. Prostate Cancer Support Group for Gay & Bi Men In mid-October we will be launching a national support initiative for gay and bisexual men affected by prostate cancer. As our Chair, Jeffrey Weeks says: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Prostate Cancer UK in the development of an important new service. This online support group will be facilitated by our very own Ben Thomas and will provide new opportunities to challenge taboos and anxieties and to develop mutual support, confidence and knowledge.”

If you would like more information and /or to register your interest in the group, please email: ann.innes@prostatecanceruk.org Code of Conduct Workshop Over recent months we have been reviewing the Codes of Conduct for both staff and volunteers. We have now turned our attention to a Members Code of Conduct. A final draft is due to be signed off by Trustees at the next Board meeting – but we are keen to involve members in what it means and so would like to invite you to a workshop on 6th October from 10am to 12noon. Please book here: https://codeofconductworkshop.eventbrite. co.uk with password “memberodl” if you would be interested. It will also be an opportunity to meet one of our new Trustees, Tony Jackson. Will Writing Workshop Where there’s a will… Writing a will is one of those things no one wants to do but is relieved once it’s done. Our next Will Writing Workshop is on October 20th, 2pm-4pm and will feature solicitors and even undertakers to de-mystify the process and help get the ball rolling. As well as talks and presentations, there will be a chance for you to chat to legal experts about what’s involved and how much it costs, which is usually no more than a couple of hundred pounds. Refreshments will be available for a small donation. No need to book, just turn up.

Government national LGBT survey In July the Government Equalities Office (GEO) began a process of collecting data about LGBT people in the UK in their online survey, the National LGBT survey. Juliet Chard Member services Coordinator juliet.chard@openingdoorslondon.org.uk Tel: 020 7239 0400 Juliet is our new member services coordinator, working alongside Adrian to support activities and signpost services. She has worked in LGBT campaigning for the last 3 years. She is also a passionate cyclist and volunteers at London Bike Kitchen’s women and gender variant night, supporting people to learn how to fix their own bike.

Adrian Beaumont Member Services Coordinator adrian.beaumont@openingdoorslondon.org.uk Tel: 020 7239 0400 Adrian is our new Member Services Coordinator working alongside Juliet to help ensure delivery of a range of programmes and managing and delivering ODL’s LGBT* Connect service. He has a background in LGBT campaigning, facilitating, training, sexual health and wellbeing services for older people and has worked extensively in the public and charity sectors as well as freelance. He loves gardening, cooking and travelling.

Naturally a survey of this sort involves asking people to provide information about themselves and it can often be challenging to find the right questions in order to elicit the most accurate, wide ranging information about any given knowledge field. The survey fails to do justice to our communities when asking about gender identity, and also through assumptions that some of the questions make. For example, if one selects the Woman/Girl or Man/Boy option followed by the Transwoman/ Transgirl or Transman/Transboy option the first selection is erased. This means that trans people have to select whether they choose to identify themselves as either women/girls/ men/boys or trans people, rather than specific kinds of women or men, such as women or men of colour, differently abled women or men, gay, lesbian or gay women or men. Nevertheless, it is important that our voices are heard in surveys like this, and we urge you to complete it, while making it clear where appropriate that the questions could have been posed in a more inclusive and clear way. If you have comments about the construction of the questionnaire please contact the GEO directly. https://smartsurvey.co.uk/s/govuk-lgbt-survey/

Another Great Clive Wet Walk Return to Breakfast Club East It is time to face reality. It always rains on Clive’s walks. This being October the betting odds on rain are even better. So let’s just sit back, get protectively dressed, and enjoy the outing! We will take a different route to the one chosen earlier in the year. The route will offer a better idea of the Olympic Stadium, The Aquadrome and other features as well as the chance of again seeing a short pleasant stroll of a natural section of the River Lea itself.

Lunch plans: This is not an event to bring sandwiches. Attendees who are hungry may choose to enjoy the regular “ Steak Night” later at the Stratford JD Weatherspoon’s or other nearby venues by making their own arrangements before or after visiting the venue. You have options …. Walkers : Meet at 2.15 outside Starbucks on the lowest level of Westfield Shopping Centre . This is just within the shopping centre entrance from Stratford Station so you will be dry. Non Walkers: if you feel unable to walk please make your own arrangements, so as to arrive at The Breakfast Club East at 3.15. We were thoroughly spoiled by Breakfast Club staff at the expeditionary outing earlier this year by being supplied with excellent tea or coffee and cakes. We will leave promptly at 5pm as regular customers arrive. The Breakfast Club East overlooks the Canalised section of the River Lea. You are responsible for your own arrngements. Hackney Wick station is on an overground line which runs across north London. Please see the Transport for London Website and consult maps. It is your responsibility to locate the venue, which is alongside the canalised section or the River Lea near the Here East building. 2.15pm walkers 3.15pm non walkers.

Rainbow Memory Café launches! Tavis House If you are LGBT* and have concerns about your memory , are living with a dementia or caring for someone with memory or other cognitive problems, we hope this group offers a safe place to gain support from others in a similar situation and have an enjoyable afternoon as well! We have plans for talks and information about dementia, some social activities (music, arts, discussions etc.) as well as for members to have time to talk and share any concerns. One of the biggest difficulties of an initiative like this is finding people who might benefit. Obviously some people in the earlier stages of dementia may be struggling with facing that reality and be reluctant to ‘come out’ about their diagnosis. There are others in the later stages of dementia who might find coming independently to a group quite challenging. We may be able to develop ways of befrienders supporting some people to attend the group.

. We therefore need the help of all ODL members to help us find people who might benefit from this support. Please contact me if you think you might know someone and I am also happy to visit people in the first instance rather than expecting people to just come along to the Café. There are also likely to be LGBT people caring for parents or friends with a dementia who might find the Café a support. We may develop an evening meeting in future for those who are working during the day. It is going to take time for the group to get going but we already have our first two members Mike and Tom, so please help us make sure that we don’t have too much cake left over on October 9th! We also need to know numbers of people coming as there is limited space in the room so please let us know if you are planning to attend! For more information and for publicity leaflets about the service, please contact Sally – sally.knocker@openingdoorslondon.org.uk or call the ODL office and ask me to ring you back. To be held on the second Monday of each month (November 13th and December 11th) 2-4pm

Moonlight became the first film with an all-black cast and the first LGBT film to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Men’s Film Night Henderson Court Resource Centre Moonlight is a 2016 American coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. (111 min) A coming-of-age story about a young man from a hardscrabble Miami neighbourhood, this kaleidoscopic gem focuses on three periods of its subject’s life, chaptered by the different names and identities he assumes, or is given – “Little”, “Chiron” and “Black”. Moonlight explores the difficulties he faces with his sexuality and identity, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures growing up. Lending heartfelt voice to characters who have previously been silenced or sidelined, Moonlight is an astonishingly accomplished work – rich, sensuous and tactile, by turns heartbreaking and uplifting.
