LISTINGS DECEMBER 2018

National study looking for participants to improve communication between health and social care professionals and LGBT+ patients with serious illness The ACCESSCare team at King’s College London has launched a major piece of research, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, to understand and improve health and social care professionals’ communication with LGBT+ people with serious illness. Good communication with health and social care professionals is particularly important for people facing serious illnesses, and for their significant others. In previous work, the ACCESSCare team found that LGBT people described experiences of discrimination, and lacking sensitivity from health and social care professionals. The study is currently looking for LGBT+ people, 18 years old or above, who are facing a serious illness (such as cancer, organ failure, neurological conditions or other conditions that impact significantly on quality of life), as well as their partners, friends and relatives, for participation in a brief interview. The “+” (in LGBT+) is used to be inclusive of anyone who considers themselves to have a minority sexual orientation, gender identity/history, or biological sex. The study findings will be used to develop evidence-based guidance for health and social care professionals to improve their communication with LGBT+ patients and their significant others. If you are interested in participating in the ACCESSCare C project, email debbie.braybrook@kcl.ac.uk or visit www.csi.kcl.ac.uk/accesscare/c for more information This study is funded by the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (NIHR RfPB) Programme (Grant Ref. number: PB-PG-0816-20001). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.

Please note that addresses and transport information for all venues are now included at the end of the listings.

A member’s ODL Christmas Appeal “Like many of the baby-boomer generation I am fortunate to have the best pension provision of any generation in our country’s history. At Christmas, I am conscious how important is ODL’s befriending service to those older LGBT+ members who for various reasons are housebound, lonely and socially isolated at a time when families traditionally gather together. It would be a wonderful gesture if our better off members would donate the winter fuel allowance that each of us receive to such a worthy cause. Please help. Even if only 20 of our 1800 members responded it would provide an additional income of £4k. “

ODL’s 2018 Christmas Fundraising Campaign - Give the gift of friendship! Opening Doors London has launched our first ever Christmas fundraising campaign! By encouraging people to ‘give the gift of friendship’ we are hoping to highlight and support the fantastic and important work of our befriending team. Christmas can be a tough time, especially for those who don’t have family or friends to spend it with. ODL’s befriending service tackles loneliness and isolation, and can be the start of a strong and meaningful friendship. For Dennis, whose befriender Mauritz came on Christmas morning, it was the first time he had spent Christmas Day together with someone in 55 years. You can support the campaign by donating or sharing our fundraising page via social media and with your networks: www.justgiving.com/campaign/giftoffriendship

Richard J, ODL Member Southwark Queer Arts Week LGBT+ History Month February 2019 In February 2018 we had the Queer Arts Weekend at the Shortwave Gallery. I have booked the Art Academy Gallery from the 22nd to the 28th February. It’s at the former library building on Walworth Road, Elephant and Castle. The themes for 2019 are Peace, Reconciliation and Activism. The aim is to particularly celebrate two anniversaries: the end of the first world war and the Stonewall riots. More details are available on the website ( lgbthistorymonth.org.uk ). Artists are welcome to submit artwork of any kind using their own LGBTQ+ themes, as well as the official ones. We also want performers for our opening night show. I run an informal art group for Opening Doors London (ODL) in Homerton and help with the social group in Southwark. If you are interested in more information about the 2019 Queer Arts Week or the groups, please email me, Philippa, at phildpunchard@hotmail.co.uk or tel: 079 515 406 40.

As I write this the season has definitely moved from bright autumn days to a more wintery feel. I hope that you are all keeping warm and still able to come along to ODL activities and events. It is so important to keep connected, especially at this time of year. And as usual, we have wonderful offerings for you and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events sometime soon. The ODL team and trustees have been busy reviewing our work and thinking about what the future holds. In mid-November we all met for an organisational Away Day, giving us an opportunity to look back at what we have achieved as well as think about how we might develop ODL in ways that really meet the needs of our communities. Over the next couple of months I will be working with the team to develop a five-year Business Plan for ODL. Over the last couple of years ODL has really developed – our membership has doubled and is now over 1800. We have a range of new activities and services. We have new staff and are supported by some amazing volunteers. Two ODL services have now been accredited with national bodies, and our Rainbow Memory Café was a finalist in the Dementia Care 2018 Innovation Awards. We are more diverse and have renewed our commitment to being a truly inclusive organisation. As we continue to develop, it is really important to us that we continue to listen to members – so much so that it is one of our five-key-strategic themes. As part of the Business Planning process we will be reviewing the opportunities we have to hear the voices of members and understand your needs and aspirations. We remain committed to working with you to support all older LGBT+ people live happy, healthy and independent lives. We are still a small organisation in terms of staff and resources – but with your support and the support of all of our volunteers we deliver an amazing range of activities and services – and we want to continue to do this. I hope to provide more information about member engagement in future Listings.

Congratulations to the Befriending Team [Paul and Fabricio] for successfully steering ODL through the accreditation process for the Approved Provider Standard – the national quality standard for Mentoring and Befriending Services. It was a rigorous process, which looked at our management and operation; the involvement of service users; the recruitment and training of volunteers; and how the befriending relationship is managed. The assessor noted that: “The ODL Befriending Service has been pursuing and demonstrating good practice, and continues to strive towards becoming a sector leader in the development of innovative services and standards of excellence for service provision in the LGBT+ community. The ODL Befriending Service operates in alignment with the ODL values, is well-structured, fully integrated within the wider ODL provision, and achieve positive outcomes for its befriended clients and befrienders alike.” Thank you to all those – staff and volunteers involved in delivering such a fantastic service!
