LISTINGS JUNE 2018
ODL Members Event Don’t forget to register for the ODL Members Event on Wednesday 30 May – your chance to meet new members, share valuable feedback and learn more about what’s planned for the future. There will be a lovely tea party and social at the end. https://membersevent2018.eventbrite.co.uk
Section 28 – 30 year anniversary – special events On 24 May 1988, what was known as Clause 28 became the law and local authorities around the country were told that they must not ‘intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’. This had a particularly corrosive impact on schools, teachers and those working to support LGBT young people. Section 28 galvanized the community to come together to confront and oppose institutionalised homophobia. CONFIDENT LGBT COMMUNICATORS Opening Doors London is looking for members to train as Ambassadors of our work to local councils, business corporations and community organisations. You don’t need qualifications but you do need to be a good communicator and confident to identify and talk about your life as an LGBT person. We are particularly interested at this time in anyone with a business, management or finance background, but all enquiries are welcome. There is an application process and training that needs to be undertaken but first steps are to make contact with Jim Glennon the Opening Doors London Training and Consultancy Manager at jim.glennon@ openingdoorslondon.org.uk
To mark the 30 year anniversary of Section 28, we will be holding two events: Women’s activism & Section 28 on Wednesday 6 June, 6-8pm at UNISON Centre, 130 Euston Road, London NW1 2AY. Book via Eventbrite or by calling the office. ODL Annual Lecture on the Legacy of Section 28 with Lisa Power Lisa, who co-founded Stonewall in response to Section 28 at the time, will share her insights and reflections on Section 28 and its impact. This will take place at Tavis House on the afternoon of Monday 2 July. Book via Eventbrite or by calling the office.
Have something special we could auction at our birthday fundraiser on July 18th? Know a restaurant that could offer us a meal for two, an artist who could donate a work or a club that could donate membership? The more unusual the gift the better, as they attract interest from collectors, e.g. a script signed by a famous actor, the book signed by the author or the music manuscript signed by the composer. The auction will be online initially attracting buyers from around the world, so the more one-off the gift the higher the bids. Please contact: suzy.barber@openingdoorslondon.org. uk or call 020 7 239 0400 - Thank you!

One of the things I am really proud of at ODL is the amazing intergenerational aspect of our work. From conversations I have had with members there is a real richness from the fact that we have many people involved with ODL from their teens to their nineties – the youngest volunteer is currently 18 and the older is 91. We are all influenced by each others life experiences, by how people want to identify around gender and sexuality, and their interests. Every year we celebrate Volunteers’ Week. It is a chance to be part of the UK’s biggest celebration of volunteering, recognising the contribution of 23 million people who volunteer in their communities across the UK – and more specifically the contribution of 286 people who have volunteered for ODL this past year. This is an awesome number of people who give up their time to support the work we are doing. And especially awesome for me is the fact that 27% of those who volunteer for ODL are also Members! I love the fact that we have so many opportunities for folk to get involved – that you do - and it makes such a difference! We currently have lots of opportunities being advertised on our website. They include supporting some of our social activities and events, helping out in the office, befriending, supporting the Rainbow Memory Café, becoming an Ambassador, joining the Partnership team talking to corporate LGBT+ networks … and lots more. I urge you to join the merry throng by having a look at our Get Involved section on the website. Then maybe next year you will be joining our Volunteer Awards Party! Existing volunteers can sign up here: https://volunteerawards2018.eventbrite.co.uk This month sees ODL hosting a national conference – Pride in Care. It is aimed at health and social care professionals, providing an opportunity to consider the needs of our communities, share the work of ODL and our partners, and help identify new approaches to service delivery. We are so grateful to all the wonderful people who have agreed to speak and run workshops – we have a fabulous line-up.
We will also be launching our Pride in Care quality standard for health and social care organisations working with older people – giving them an opportunity to show that they aspire to deliver quality services to us! Please let Jim know if you would like to become involved in helping us roll this out across London and beyond. Tickets for our famous Summer Party have now gone on sale. You can get your tickets here . There are a limited number of discounted tickets for members – so I hope you will come along and celebrate our achievements of the last year – and help us raise funds for our work. And if that wasn’t enough, Opening Doors London will have a presence at Pride in London on 7 July, Black Pride on 8 July in Vauxhall and Trans Pride in Hove on 21 July. For Pride in London, we will be releasing tickets on Wednesday 6 June and you will be able to book here or call direct to reserve a space: https://odlpridelondon2018.eventbrite.co.uk There are limited spaces available so please only book if you are able to attend. The location of the pre-Pride brunch and full details of the day are still being worked out so please watch this space. We will release information about Trans Pride and Black Pride soon but if you are interested in supporting our stalls at these events please email info@openingdoorslondon.org.uk or call the office. And last, but not least: thank you to all who took part in the annual survey. We had over 140 responses and will be looking in detail at what you told us over the coming weeks. Enjoy June!
