LISTINGS NOVEMBER 2018

Did you suffer at the hands of the police after ’67? I am currently studying for a degree in History at Reading University and the focus of my research is ‘Experiences of police brutality and discrimination against members of the LGBT community, since the enactment of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act’. I am really interested in hearing your reminiscences of ‘interactions’ with the police, particularly in the backlash that occurred in the wake of the ’67 legislation. This research and my dissertation will not be seen beyond the confines of the university. I would be extremely grateful if you could spare me some time to share your memories and would be happy to interview you at your convenience, please contact me on e.shewell@student.reading.ac.uk. Anyone who contributes will be accorded full anonymity.

Please note that addresses and transport information for all venues are now included at the end of the listings.

Do you have access requirements? If there’s an event you’d like to attend, but you’re not sure if you’ll be able to make it due to your access requirements, please, contact us so we can help make sure you get the most out of being part of Opening Doors London. Contact us on 020 7239 0400 or info@openingdoorslondon.org.uk

We would like to introduce our BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) members to the new elected sessional worker, Rachael. I have previously done work within BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) LGBT+ groups whilst at university which included campaigns and running workshops to raise awareness around the different issues that black LGBT+ people face both within the LGBT+ community and society at large. This included self-care workshops, focusing on the different terminologies and language we use, organising film screenings and discussion workshops and trips. I look forward to the opportunity to meeting ODL’s current BAME members and wider members. I look forward to developing some amazing social groups and events that cater to the variety of people and would love for the process to be as much of a two way street as possible so please do send in queries or concerns or any ideas for future events on rachael.hinds@ openingdoorslondon.org.uk or call the office. I am hoping to see as many of the BAME members for my first social on the 10th November in Brixton. https://bamelgbtover50s.eventbrite.co.uk

We would also like to introduce our members to Bella who just started working at the ODL office. Bella is our new addition to the ODL team working with communications and member services administrative support. They are at the ODL office twice a week and are also studying towards a Master’s degree in Media and Communications. They have various creative hobbies, love to cook and care for their plants. You can reach them on isabella.normark@openingdoorslondon.org.uk or by calling the office.

Every Wednesday 1-5pm at Tavis House Problem or question about your laptop, mobile phone or tablet? Are you having any problems getting to grips with your new technology? Is your laptop, mobile phone it tablet not doing what you want it to? ODL is running weekly one-toone sessions with our IT expert Alan. Each session will last an hour and can be booked by getting in touch with ODL.

to all those who came along to an amazing evening hosted by our corporate partners State Street Bank at the end of September to celebrate the lives of older lesbians. We had a fabulous panel of ODL members, including author Dr Jane Traies. All the participants had stories featured in her latest book: Now You See Me. “It truly was our pleasure to host this book launch and I’ve personally enjoyed very much working alongside Jane, Evelyn and Juliet to organise it. I found all of the participant stories really captivating and moving”. As you know, part of what Opening Doors London does is to work with mainstream organisations to raise their awareness of the needs and experience of older people from the LGBT+ communities. Over recent months this has included being on panels at events hosted by Age UK; delivering workshops at the Larger Almshouses Charities Networking Group; talking to volunteer managers in a range of local charities; delivering in-house training; and providing workshops in a number of boroughs. We have also been working with Skills for Care to deliver three workshops called “Confident with Difference” around the UK [Bradford, Bristol and London] aimed at those working in the care sector. We are also working with Skills for Care to develop some resources to go on their website. By doing this work we hope that we are improving the experience we – as older LGBT+ people – can expect from mainstream care organisations. Here is one of the comments we received: “I attended the event in Bradford yesterday and wanted to express my thanks for what was a fabulous and inspirational afternoon … The ambassadors were also a high point, and their stories really brought to life what people have gone through and how this can impact on their expectations and experiences now. … [they] all seemed so vital and aspirational, I really came away with a strong sense of wanting to do what I can to promote a more positive view of older people in general, but in particular the additional difficulties people can sometimes face as a result of their sexual identity”.

Participant at the Bradford workshop ODL has also worked with Compassion in Dying to develop an award winning resource: Planning ahead for the LGBT community It was given the Special Award for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at this year’s BMA Patient Information Awards. The booklet was described by its reviewer as ‘a really valuable resource which adds to the body of patient literature on end of life decisions/ LGBT-specific healthcare resources. Congratulations on producing this: I’m sure it will take the complexity out of a very hard to understand but important aspect of healthcare decision making.’ You can order your copy by going on Compassion in Dying’s website https://compassionindying.org.uk/library/planning-ahead-lgbt-community/

It is free! The ODL Rainbow Memory Café celebrated it’s first anniversary in style in October – it was shortlisted for a national award! We are in the category Outstanding Dementia Care Innovation 2018 in the 9th Dementia Care Awards - so fingers crossed. So if you are worried about your memory – or someone you care for don’t forget to come along at 2pm on the second Monday of every month. As usual the Member Services team have developed a fantastic array of events and activities for ODL members to enjoy this month. Highlights include a trip to the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the V&A, our first new BAME social group, and the Hi-Tech High Tea at Macquarie. We are also starting to plan our winter holiday activities. Enjoy!

Alice Wallace Director of ODL

Women’s forum update by Member Services Coordinator, Juliet Chard I would like to thank those members who attended the women’s forum at the end of September for their time and valuable contributions. For us it what was the first step in creating more opportunities and conversations around the involvement of women in the work of ODL. The evening provided some excellent ideas for what we might do in the future, including work in the following areas: Communications

• Improve contact and communications with Age UKs in London • Re-establish Meetups account for ODL – list of those attending including women may encourage others • Intros of group leads in listings – Highlight women sessional workers and volunteers vols and their • • •

groups in the listings Marketing of our groups - women and diverse imagery is important Build links with other women’s organisations in London Use listings to communicate a positive statement around inclusivity and how we tackle incidents between members to build trust

Events and activities

• Commitment to plan more women-focused events talks or screenings etc. Review member journey

• How do we support women and other members from under-represented groups who are new to ODL – follow up process with new members to be reviewed

We are committed to taking steps in these areas and welcome any further reflections or input from those of you who weren’t able to make it.

Southwark Queer Arts Week LGBT+ History Month February 2019 In February 2018 we had the Queer Arts Weekend at the Shortwave Gallery. The themes for 2019 are Peace, Reconciliation and Activism. The aim is to particularly celebrate two anniversaries: the end of the first world war and the Stonewall riots. More details are available on the website ( lgbthistorymonth.org.uk ). Artists are welcome to submit artwork of any kind using their own LGBTQ+ themes, as well as the official ones. Tuesday 6th The Autumn Leaves – Epping Forest outing Loughton Underground

Tuesday Group Havering LGBT over-50s Social

The forest can be glorious in autumn with varying shades of copper and gold and sunlight streaming through trees. This walk may simply become a visit and snack at Loughton if weather is bad returning via Loughton tube. If things are better we will vary the length of the walk accordingly. We will also assess numbers and abilities of walkers and see who needs to finish early. We could get to Chingford easily in two hours finishing by 1.30. But we will take a longer walk to a more picturesque route if the weather is fine and those attending are keen. The most beautiful parts of the forest are remote. Return via Chingford station is quick. You can change to Victoria line from Walthamstow or continue to Liverpool Street enjoying the trip across the marshes and reservoirs. Good footwear needed and a rainproof coat. This is Great Britain after all. Eat a good breakfast or bring a sandwich. Meet and depart soon after 11.30 from Loughton Underground. Living in London can become a lonely experience as you get older, especially as you can’t get out and about as you used to. Having somebody to spend time with and talk to can make all the difference. The Opening Doors London Befriending Service might be able to help you. The Befriending Scheme aims to reduce the stress of loneliness and isolation, increase people’s confidence and enable older people to maintain their independence. The service matches a volunteer Befriender with an older person for regular social contact. So if you feel you could benefit from the regular visits of a volunteer befriender, or if you have any friends, neighbours or relatives who could benefit, or if you would like to become a Volunteer Befriender please contact the Befriending Service on 020 7239 0400 or befriending@openingdoorslondon.org.uk
