LISTINGS APRIL 2018

Were you involved in challenging Section 28? On 24 May 1988, what was known as Clause 28 became the law and local authorities around the country were told that they must not ‘intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’. This had a particularly corrosive impact on schools, teachers and those working to support LGBT young people. Section 28 galvanized the community to come together to confront and oppose institutionalised homophobia. We are hoping to hold some events in May to mark the 30th anniversary and would welcome anyone who thinks they would like to contribute their experiences or who have any memorabilia or photos from the campaign. Please email: evelyn.pittman@openingdoorslondon.org.uk Jim Glennon our training manager is also interested in hearing from anyone who is willing to tell their stories about how it affected them. Please drop Jim from ODL a line via jim.glennon@openingdoorslondon.org.uk

CONFIDENT LGBT COMMUNICATORS Opening Doors London is looking for members to train as Ambassadors of our work to local councils, business corporations and community organisations. You don’t need qualifications but you do need to be a good communicator and confident to identify and talk about your life as an LGBT person. We are particularly interested at this time in anyone with a business, management or finance background, but all enquiries are welcome. There is an application process and training that needs to be undertaken but first steps are to make contact with Jim Glennon the Opening Doors London Training and Consultancy Manager at jim.glennon@openingdoorslondon.org.uk

Members Survey – we want to hear from you! In case you missed it, the annual members’ survey has gone live. We have sent out paper copies in the last few weeks to those on the postal mailing list, and you can also complete the survey online here: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6H929FG Deadlines for the survey are paper copies returned by Tuesday 17 April, and Monday 23 April for online entries.

Want to get fit, achieve something and raise money for ODL at the same time? We have places in the Royal Parks Half Marathon up for grabs and would love you to run for us. The event is on Sunday October 14th and takes in some of Central London’s most iconic open spaces and landmarks, including Hyde Park, St. James Park, Kensington Gardens, Buckingham Palace and the Strand. As the public ballot is now closed and the only way to take part in this fantastic sporting occasion is to run for a charity. Run for us! For more information contact Community Partnerships and Fundraising Officer Suzy Barber on suzy.barber@openingdoorslondon.org.uk or call 020 7 239 0400.

Welcome to the April edition of the ODL Listings! As ever, we have an exciting smorgasbord of activities for you – including a repeat visit to our friends at NBC Universal for a film and afternoon tea, a trip to the Royal Institute of British Architects, and a community private view at the Barbican. The ODL Rainbow Memory Café is going from strength to strength – we have had lots of media interest in it and so we have been able to reach out to more older people from our communities who might be able to benefit from this group. A big ‘thank you’ to members Tom, Mike and Elmar, and sessional worker Sally Knocker, for all that they have been doing to promote this important area of work. The virtual support group for gay and bi men affected by prostate cancer has also been really well received. A big ‘thank you’ to Ben Thomas for leading this work. Alongside all these fun activities, we are also developing ODL as an organisation. Here are a couple of things we are doing: § ODL Annual Members Event: We are NOT taking bookings just yet [the Eventbrite link will be circulated with the May Listings] but you may want to put Wednesday 30th May in your diary for our annual Members Event. This is an opportunity for you to meet the Board of Trustees and staff, hear about what we have been doing to develop ODL, learn about other members views from the Members Survey, and to have your say on how ODL is run. Afternoon tea will be provided! § General Data Protection Review: The government is bringing in new legislation around what information we are able to keep about ODL members. It has huge implications for a small organisation like ODL – so we are asking for your support. At the end of the Listings you will find a form giving you the choice to opt out of receiving all ODL communications and for us to remove your information from our records. This will mean you are no longer a member of the organisation so please only complete if this is the case. We’ve also provided a schedule of information detailing how we keep your information safe.

§ Encouraging more regular donors: ODL receives funding from a variety of sources – but often it is for a specific purpose and not always enough! Money from individual regular donors gives us the freedom to try out new ways of responding to new and emerging needs within our communities. This is how we managed to have two important pilot projects over the last 6 months – one supporting members affected by dementia, and another supporting members affected by prostate cancer. Membership to ODL remains free – and we want to keep it that way. But if you are able to support us with a few pounds each month – as some members already do – it would be really appreciated! If you would like more information – please either see the information at the end of the listings or contact me here at the ODL office. § Volunteer Awards: In June ODL will be having our first Volunteer Awards. This is an opportunity for us to thank those volunteers who have gone ‘over and above’ in supporting ODL activities and members. If you would like to nominate am ODL volunteer for recognition please email info@openingdoorslondon.org.uk saying who and why. The deadline for nominations is Friday 4th May. Otherwise, I hope you continue to enjoy all that ODL offers … and look forward to seeing you at an event sometime soon!

Have something special we could auction at our birthday fundraiser on July 18th? Know a restaurant that could offer us a meal for two, an artist who could donate a work of art or a club that could donate membership? The more unusual the gift sometimes the better, as they attract interest from collectors, e.g. a script signed by a famous actor, the book signed by the author or the music manuscript signed by the composer. The auction will be online initially attracting buyers from around the world, so the more one-off the gift the higher the bids. Please contact: suzy.barber@ openingdoorslondon.org.uk Thank you!

APRIL 2018

East London River Walk Bring a brolly and hope the sun shines: an East London River Walk. Wear sensible shoes! This visit is for people who like to explore hidden corners.. At places there are sheer drops to the muddy river edges and water can be fast flowing, so sensible caution is needed to stay safe. Being at the junction of the River Lea with the Thames (aka Leamouth or Bow Creek) Trinity Buoy Wharf has the same large tidal variation, so the experience can vary. If you check the map you will see how the rivers meander and how it comes to be a lost, part industrial, spot amongst very high value development. You can see many high rise blocks rapidly rising nearby. It is in truth, a bit bleak on overcast days and has a bit of the feel of Docklands of old.The Lighthouse is not tall, and is only open at weekends but the view from it is said to be well worth enjoying. Their website explains.

Sunday 29th

Monday 30th

In 1998, Trinity Buoy Wharf was an empty, derelict site. Now it is a thriving centre for the arts and creative industries with a rare community of over 500 like minded people enjoying the unique riverside location. Free from overdevelopment, the site’s fascinating history can still be seen in the buildings, installations and residents such as the Lightship LV95 that is moored here. With careful regeneration (the website says),Trinity Buoy Wharf has kept its character whilst offering amenities such as studio and gallery space, a pier, boat club, school, rehearsal rooms and two dining options. If time allows we can also visit the Limmo Peninsual Ecological Park.

Bridge and Scrabble Club Lumen Café

We can try the Bow Creek Café or FatBoys for coffee or a light meal, but my own preference will be to return to JD Weatherspoons at Stratford . If you choose to take the Jubilee line from Canning Town to the O2 can select among many places to dine there should they so choose. There is no leash (which may disappoint some people!) Meeting point: Outside the exit to Stratford Station in the “Pret A Manger”. This to the left as you leave the station, and is near the ticket office. The bus garage is nearby. Please note this is NOT the Westfield side of Stratford. The bus garage itself comprises white inverted umbrella shaped canvas. Exploring the site should take less than 90 mins. Visiting the ecological park could extend that to three hours. Meeting time 1.30. We will take the DLR to Canning Town by 1.45
