Black Pride 2017

Our second annual meeting was generously supported by the international legal firm Norton Rose Fulbright, in their offices near London Bridge, with a splendid panoramic view of the river. This provided an excellent venue for what turned out to be a very convivial event, which provided a great opportunity to exchange information, express views about the direction of ODL, and socialise over cakes and other refreshments. Membership has increased by 50% to 1700 members. Income has increased by a similar percentage, thanks to the hard work of staff and the generosity of various funders. Several staff had moved on, but overall staffing had increased, with excellent new colleagues. There are now almost 300 volunteers without whom the 50 or so events each month, the 70+ befriending relationships and our training would be impossible. Some members were worried that it was often difficult to contact staff, but with so much going on and a relatively small staff team it is impossible for every meeting to be covered and every call or email to be replied to immediately. It was here that volunteer help was so crucial. Staff agreed we needed to find ways of keeping members better informed about meeting changes. In the round table discussions members raised a number of concerns. A major worry was about inaccuracies in the Listings. Some of these arose from late information coming in, but efforts were being made to check accuracy more rigorously. Some members complained that Eventbite events were often taken up by non-members, while many members did not turn up despite booking to do so. We are hoping that our new website, to be launched later this year, will ease some of the problems. There was an interesting discussion about the role of Listings. Some members complained that the editorial information often distracted from event information. On the other hand, some wanted more general information about ODL. The role of Listings would be taken up in a general review of ODL’s future plans that would begin in the summer, and members would be involved in this in various ways.

A major issue that concerned many members was the gender balance within the membership. Despite strenuous efforts to attract more women (and trans, bisexual and BME members), events were still often not inclusive enough. The chair pointed out that many women were put off by the male predominance, and we are anxious that there continue to be safe spaces for women. This remain a key issue that we will continue to give priority to in the coming year, and perhaps hold a focus group on the topic. A related issue was the privacy of meetings, and the intrusion caused by filming occasionally taking place. ODL in fact now has strict guidelines on this and filming and photography should not take place without the explicit agreement of members. We were also taking active steps to protect data, in line with new legal guidelines. Over all, members were very satisfied with ODL services and this echoed the findings of the recent members’ survey and the comments by members at the event : ‘We would be lost without ODL’. We will work hard over the next year to ensure continuing improvement and where possible expansion of our services. Finally as chair of the trustees, I would like to warmly thank our sponsors for the day, Norton Rose Fulbright, for their hospitality, our director, Alice Wallace, and her staff, for their dedicated work, our volunteers, who make so much possible, and above all, you, the members, for your involvement and commitment. It makes everything worthwhile.

Wednesday 18th Non Zero One Workshop Tavis House. Bloomsbury room We have been invited to take part in interactive theatremakers, non zero one’s new project, ‘put her forward’, supported by National Trust’s Heritage Open Days, inspired by public statues. There are 925 public statues in the UK, yet only 25 of these statues are non-royal, non-mythical women. There are more statues of goats. There are more statues of men called John. But together, we can change that and double the number by September. Which women do you think are inspirational? Who have positively impacted the lives of those around them? Who would you nominate to inspire younger generations? This workshop will encourage discussions around the area’s local history and historical women, as a point of entry to consider women who have positively impacted their own lives.

Men’s Film Night: ‘Call Me by Your Name’ Henderson Court

Creative writing workshop aimed at women - Full of Life offers participants an opportunity to explore the older years of life and ageing in the present day. As we age there’s an increasing treasure trove of memories. By tapping into these we can explore what we have seen, heard, lived, and continue to dream of and experience. Using the metaphor of light, the workshop will add dimensions to our lives and/or the lives of our characters.

‘Call Me by Your Name’ is a 2017 coming-of-age drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by James Ivory. Based on a novel of the same name by André Aciman.

Jocelyn Watson aims to guide you with fun writing exercises, group discussion, and group feedback on a creative adventure. Whether you’re creating prose from what you remember or imagine, this creative fiction workshop will help you move forward. In a constructive, creative, and friendly space you will unpack gifts, whether from yourself, to yourself, or those left behind by others for you to (re-)discover!

Set in northern Italy in 1983, ‘Call Me by Your Name’ chronicles a romantic relationship between 17-year-old Elio Perlman and his professor father’s 24-yearold graduate-student assistant, Oliver. The film was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year and nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Song at the 90th Academy Awards. Southwark Weekend Outings Fun Home Matinee Young Vic

Bridge and Scrabble Club Lumen Café

Join us for a matinee performance of Fun Home, a poignant portrayal of the complexities of queer family life by Alison Bechdel. We have 20 free tickets as part of our work in Southwark, all welcome. Meet Alison at three stages of her life. Memories of her 1970s childhood in a funeral home merge with her college love life and her coming out.

Whether you are a traditional sketcher or an outrageous avant-gardist this group will supply encouragement, support, plenty of dialogue.... and maybe an exhibition. Basic materials provided, but feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and nonmessy kit. Contact: juliet.chard@ openingdoorslondon.org.uk for more info. 12:30 for a 1pm start

See first Monday for more info. 2pm – 4pm
