The book ‘Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin’ lit the fuse for a public campaign and the 1988 Act enshrined in legislation: that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”.
The last year has seen the membership of Opening Doors London grow to over 1500! It is fantastic that we are able to reach out to more and more people from the older LGBT* communities – thank you for your support in getting leaflets into libraries, articles into magazines, and tweeting about ODL.
This fanned the flames of homophobia further and left teachers, in particular, feeling they were prevented from supporting our young people. But it galvanized the Lesbian and Gay community as well as allies! Were you there? Do you have a story to tell? If so, we want to hear from you! We are planning a number of activities and events over the next few months – so please contact Evelyn by emailing evelyn.pittman@ openingdoorslondon.org.uk and talk to her about how you were involved.
We have also seen the staff team grow, and the services we provide develop.
Making a difference
A new year, new challenges, new anniversaries and new opportunities!
ODL Befriending Service We are developing our service. Those of you who have recently been assessed for a volunteer befriender will know that we asked you about your general health and wellbeing. This is so that we can track what difference the befriending service is making to your life. We are intending to contact all members of the Befriending Service to assess if the service is making a difference to your life too. Please tell Paul and Fabricio all the ways the service makes a difference. We have also decided to apply for external accreditation of our Befriending Service. We are doing this to ensure that we are providing you with the best possible service. Over the next few months Paul and Fabricio will be working through the paper work – and if you are either a client or a volunteer with the service, you might be contacted to be part of the assessment. Section 28 – 30th Anniversary May 2018 Where did those years go?! In a climate of rising homophobia, fuelled by ignorance surrounding AIDS, and against a background of the political conservatism of Maggie Thatcher‘s ‘family values’ philosophy, Section 28 was both a product of this agenda and a political tool to hobble the perceived liberal policies of councils on the left, such as Haringey and Islington.
There are many ways to get involved with Opening Doors – one is to become an Ambassador. Over the years ODL Ambassadors have been involved in attending conferences, speaking at events, supporting staff deliver training, and generally raising the profile of older LGBT* people … and ODL! As we develop our training and policy work – we need even more of you to step forward and get involved. For more information, or to have a chat about what the role involves please contact Jim Glennon our Training & Consultancy Manager by emailing jim. glennon@openingdoorslondon.org.uk Things to look forward to this year include: February: Quiz Night to raise funds for the Befriending Service. LGBT History Month: Women and Place Event Queer Arts Weekender in Southwark (9th-10th) March: Launch of the annual member’s survey May: The annual Members Event (30th) June: The ODL volunteer awards (8th) July: ODL’s 2nd birthday party! More information will be provided in the Listings – so keep your eyes peeled and book early! Hoping that 2018 is a good one for you!

Nineteen-year-old Jason and Ade have been in the Academy of a famous London football club since they were eight years old. It’s the night before their first-ever game for the first team — a Champions league match — and they’re in a hotel room in Romania. They should be sleeping, but they’re overexcited. They skip, fight, mock each other, prepare their kit, watch a teammate’s sex tape. And then, out of nowhere, one of them kisses the other. The impact of this ‘pass’ reverberates through the next ten years of their lives — a decade of fame and failure, secrets and lies, in a sporting world where image is everything.
