This edition of Essential Madeira Islands is different. We now have a more modern and lighter graphic layout. But the quality of our magazine and its contents is the same as always, if not better with the addition of new sections and suggestions we will be exploring throughout the next editions.

After yet another decade working to highlight the best of what these islands have to offer in terms of lifestyle, we make embracing change our priority as a natural step in our growth.

In this edition, we have a look at some of best events to take place at the beginning of the Summer in Madeira. Still, we have plenty of space for Nature, History and Gastronomy. We end up reflecting what Essential is all about, a brand to do with the good things in life and a magazine to read in a relaxed and casual way.

We remember the only time a King of Portugal visited the Madeira, 115 years ago. We tell the story of Lido, a pioneering bathing resort in an island where going to the beach is not all that easy.

We show you the species of seabirds you can observe in the different seasons of the year. ear after year, the NOS Summer Opening has come to earn its iconic place in Madeiran summer. Not only has it grown exponentially, it has also ‘contributed to put Madeira on the map when it comes to Portuguese festivals’, says Gonçalo Camacho, one of the event’s organisers. And this year, the festival is back to its stage, Parque de Santa Catarina.

The 2016 edition will be held on the 22nd and 23rd of July. Last year’s edition was actually nominated for the awards for Best Urban Festival and Best Medium Sized Festival in the Portuguese Festival Awards.

On the event’s first day, the stage will belong to Orelha Negra, Skye & Ross from Morcheeba and Jimmy P. who won the award for Best New Artist in last year’s Portugal Festival Awards.

Taking the stage on the following day are Da Chick, Jazzanova & Paul Randolph and Richie Campbell, the major headliner of the event’s 4th edition.

As with last year’s edition, organisers are once again promoting what is bound to become one of the event’s trademarks, the four elements pack. Parque de Santa Catarina volta a ser palco de mais uma edição do NOS Summer Opening, um evento que se tem tornado numa das imagens de marca do verão madeirense e que, ano após ano, tem crescido e “colocado a Madeira no mapa dos festivais em Portugal”, como refere Gonçalo Camacho, um dos responsáveis pelo evento.

O festival, que se realiza este ano nos dias 22 e 23 de julho, esteve inclusive nomeado para “Melhor Festival Urbano” e “Melhor Festival de Média Dimensão” na edição passada dos Portugal Festival Awards.

No primeiro dia sobem ao palco Jimmy P, que nos Portugal Festival Awards de 2015 venceu o Prémio de Melhor Artista Revelação, Orelha Negra e Skye & Ross from Morcheeba.

No dia seguinte é a vez de Da Chick, Jazznova & Paul Randolph e de Richie Campbell, o grande cabeça de cartaz da 4.ª edição do evento.

A exemplo do ano passado, a organização volta a apostar no pack dos quatro elementos, um conjunto de experiências inspiradas nos elementos básicos da natureza (água, ar, terra e fogo) que se quer como uma das imagens de marca do festival. adeira has a long history when it comes to being visited by royalty. Royal visitors include Princess Leopoldina de Áustria, in 1812, as part of her voyage to Brazil; the crown prince D. Luís, in 1858; the beloved Elizabeth of Austria, known to locals as Sissi, in 1860; and the last emperor of the AustroHungarian Empire, Charles the 1st. But these are just a few out of many possible others.

In spite of these, it was not until 1901 that the archipelago was visited by the Portuguese monarchy.

The visit of D. Carlos and D. Amélia was a truly historic event, not only did it mark the lives of locals, it was also thoroughly dissected in the local press.

On the 22nd of June, the king and queen of Portugal arrived in Madeira to find a crowd ‘in warm celebrations’ to the sound of the national anthem of the time, ‘Hino da Carta’, as stated in an evening newspaper. Earlier that day, their ship, the ‘D. Carlos’, named after the king, had stopped by Porto Santo where the townspeople greeted the royal couple who were ‘aboard the ship’.

In between balls, religious and military services, theatre shows and visits to some of the most iconic sites of the time, such as Monte, the monarchs were also invited to a feast on the 25th of June at the gardens of Quinta do Palheiro.

An evening newspaper dated the 25th of June 1901 bid the queen farewell in verse: ‘Do not leave us, beloved Queen!/ Don’t leave the people of Madeira,/Who are yours in heart and soul.’ 쐽

do império austro-húngaro, Carlos I. Mas existem vários outros exemplos.

Apesar de todas estas visitas, nunca até 1901, na história da monarquia portuguesa, um rei tinha visitado o arquipélago. A visita do rei D. Carlos e da rainha D. Amélia marcou a vida da ilha com os jornais a dar conta do alvoroço vivido.

Foi ao som do hino nacional, então o “Hino da Carta”, e de “calorosos vivas” que suas majestades chegaram à ilha da Madeira a 22 de Junho, como refere o Correio da Tarde. Na manhã desse dia a delegação portuguesa, a bordo do “D. Carlos”, tinha parado ao largo do Porto Santo, onde recebeu “a bordo os cumprimentos” dos munícipes.

Entre os constantes bailes, as celebrações religiosas e militares, os espetáculos teatrais e passeios por algumas das mais emblemáticas atrações da época, como o Monte, os monarcas foram ainda recebidos para um banquete nos jardins da Quinta do Palheiro, a 25 de Junho.

Nesse mesmo dia, entre flores e poemas dedicados, especialmente à Rainha, os reis partiram para os Açores.

O Correio da Tarde de 25 de Junho de 1901 despedia-se da rainha em verso: “Não nos deixes Rainha muito amada!/Não deixes o povo Madeirense,/O povo d’esta terra abençoada,/ Que d’alma e coração a ti pertence.” 쐽

Long gone is its pool from the 1930s but Lido remains. It has survived time and natural disasters and now turns a new page in its book Desde a velha piscina dos anos 30, o Lido resistiu a tudo, desde o mau tempo à mudança dos tempos.

T

o speak of ‘going to the beach’ in Madeira is always met with some confusion. After all, in Madeira, usually, this actually means using manmade structures to access the sea. Though not always easy, people avoid walking over the uncomfortable pebbles made of basalt as well as the danger of some rocks and slopes.

In 1932, going for a swim was becoming trendier and trendier and as such the Town Hall of Funchal ordered the construction of Piscina do Gorgulho, a public pool filled with water from the ocean.

The construction of this pool made it so that enjoying the sea could be done more safely. There was a diving board and the pool was privileged space where people learned how to swim. Socially, the compound was also used for tea parties and musical events.

And thus started the long history of that which was for Madeirans an emblematic bathing resort.

Throughout the 60s some projects were presented having to do with increasing and improving the space as well as building a pool for children. These plans were carried out a few years later.

After some remodelling works done in 1982, the Lido bathing resort is inaugurated with some new attractions such as a bigger area for sun bathing and the toboggan.

Throughout the following decades, the resort sees its golden days: it is awarded a Blue Flag, organizes the Beach Miss Madeira pageant and hit a record number of visitors. It was also the favoured ground www.essential-madeira.com 13

uando na Madeira se fala em ir à praia, o conceito pode gerar confusão. É mais uma ida a banhos, já que a maior parte dos acessos ao mar são difíceis e a maior parte teve de ser construída pelo Homem, para evitar o desconforto dos calhaus rolados de basalto, ou o perigo das rochas e escarpas.

Em 1932, com a ida a banhos cada vez mais na moda, a Câmara Municipal do Funchal mandou construir a Piscina do Gorgulho, uma piscina pública servida com água do mar.

Após essa construção, passou a ser mais fácil desfrutar da água, num ambiente mais seguro. Havia prancha para mergulhos e a piscina era um local privilegiado para a aprendizagem da natação. Socialmente o complexo era palco para chás-dançantes e eventos musicais.

Assim nasceu a longa história de um espaço balnear emblemático para os madeirenses.

Durante os anos 60 foram apresentados alguns projetos para a ampliação e melhoramento do espaço, incluindo a criação de uma piscina para crianças, planos que se concretizaram anos mais tarde.

Após algumas obras, em 1982 é inaugurado o complexo Balnear do Lido, com destaque para o aumento das áreas destinadas aos banhos de sol e da criação de um toboggan.

Durante as décadas seguintes, o espaço atinge o seu auge: Recebe o galardão da Bandeira Azul, organiza o concurso Miss Praia Madeira e bate o seu recorde de entradas. Pelo meio, praticava-se o Madeirabol, um jogo, inventado na Madeira, que mistura o futebol e o voleibol.

Em 2010, depois de um aluvião que destruiu grande parte do complexo, teve de ser encerrado. Seis anos mais tarde reabriu ao público, totalmente remodelado.

for playing Madeiraball, a sport created in Madeira by blending football with volleyball.

After the floods of 2010 destroyed most of the resort, it had to be shut down.

Six years later, it reopens to the public, fully remodelled.

On the past 22nd of March, Lido came back to life. Throughout the decades, Lido has become sort of an icon and a meeting place for various generations.

Now, it returns with its eternal magic.

Though it has some novelties, it maintains most of its characteristics. Lido is still ‘Lido’.

All throughout the year, some people longing for the sea and the sun never stop frequenting it.

Be it in the company of friends, family, or even on their own, many already ‘call dibs’ on their favourite spots. Though silent, it is a code that is respected by the community of people of frequent the resort. Everyone knows their own spot and little by little, comes to know the people surrounding them.

From an architectural point of view, Carlos Jardim, manager of Frente Mar, the firm in charge of the many beaches of Funchal and the person responsible for administering the space since 2004, explains that the main features of space were maintained, such as its balcony structure.

The legendary ‘Wave’ from the 80s by Valtar Kalot, also remains there unaffected by the passing of time.

Those who knew this resort find in it more colour. This more clean and minimalist design was a conscious choice says the administrator of Frente Mar: ‘It has to do with the times we live in. Nowadays, architecture is seen as blank canvas for people to fill in with colour’.

Right at the entrance, the ticket shop and the gardens almost blend into one. Inside, the rocks are illustrative of a perfect symbiosis between nature and Man. There was ‘a big concern about not intervening in what is natural’ says Carlos Jardim.

The pool, cut smaller for security reasons, is still one of its biggest attractions.

Its trademark, though, is the sea. Be it through a small flight of stairs or a tall thirty nine feet high diving board, the sea surrounds the resort and opens it to the world. 쐽

LIDO IN THE 30S

No dia 22 do passado mês de março, o Lido ganhou uma nova vida. Ao longo das décadas, o Lido marcou o seu tempo e tornou-se num espaço de encontro entre várias gerações.

Agora regressa, com a mística de sempre, trazendo novidades mas conservando as características que fazem do Lido, “O Lido”.

Durante todo o ano há frequentadores assíduos, que não perdem a oportunidade de desfrutar do mar ou do sol.

Seja em família, com amigos ou sozinhos, muitos já têm o seu lugar “marcado”, num código silencioso para com a comunidade que frequenta o espaço. Todos conhecem o seu sítio e aos poucos vão conhecendo quem fica ao seu redor.

Do ponto de vista arquitetónico, Carlos Jardim, administrador da Frente Mar, empresa responsável por várias praias no Funchal, e que desde 2004 administra o espaço, explica que foram preservados os principais aspetos mais marcantes, como a visível arquitetura de varandas.

A mítica “Onda” de Valtar Kalot, da década de 80, também ainda lá está, imóvel a estas mudanças.

Quem conhecia o complexo reconhecialhe um pouco mais de cor. Este aspeto mais clean e minimalista foi uma opção consciente revela o administrador da Frente Mar:“Tem a ver com os tempos em que vivemos. Hoje em dia, a arquitetura é encarada como uma tela em branco e as pessoas é que vão dar o colorido”.

Logo à entrada, a bilheteira e os jardins quase que se unem. No interior, as rochas numa das imediações do espaço são o exemplo de uma simbiose perfeita entre a natureza e o trabalho do homem. Existiu uma “grande preocupação em não intervir no que era natural”, revela Carlos Jardim.

A piscina, reduzida por motivos de segurança, continua a ser um dos grandes atrativos.

Mas o grande ex-libris é o acesso ao mar. Seja através de pequenas escadas ou de uma prancha com doze metros de altura, o mar envolve o complexo e abre-se para o mundo. 쐽

ix concerts, three days’ worth of music on stage and a set of side events. A proven formula, this year it will serve once more as the masterplan for the Funchal Jazz Festival, to be held between the 14th and 16th of July at Parque de Santa Catarina.

‘Innovating isn’t the organizers’ biggest concern right now’, said artistic director Paulo Barbosa in interview with Essential.

This, however, is not to mean that everything will be the same. He explains: ‘When it comes to innovation, our goals have more to do with bringing innovating musicians from the world of jazz’.

‘Jazz’ is the keyword in the program of festival which in previous years has tried to be more inclusive by having musicians from other genres. Since 2014, Choose Fantasy, the organizer, has committed itself to producing ‘a festival fully geared towards jazz, taking full advantage of the fact that, in our opinion, this is still the broadest and most comprehensive musical genre’.

Each year, organizers invest in a ‘balanced offer, strong as whole’ in which every concert ‘is worth it’. The idea is for the festival to be ‘illustrative of the best of what is done in jazz music, mainly in the US, but in Portugal as well’.

Paulo Barbosa expands on the quality of the invited musicians. And while it is

“Inovar não é, neste momento, a principal preocupação” da organização, refere o diretor artístico, Paulo Barbosa, em entrevista à Essential. Mas para quem possa pensar que esta frase significa deixar tudo na mesma, vem a explicação: “A nossa preocupação face à inovação manifesta-se mais pela inclusão de músicos inovadores no atual cenário do jazz”.

‘Jazz’ é a palavra-chave na programação do festival que em alguns anos enveredou por outros géneros numa tentativa de ser mais abrangente. Mas desde 2014 a Choose Fantasy, empresa organizadora, aposta em “produzir um festival plenamente direcionado para o jazz, tirando partindo do facto de, em nossa opinião, este continuar a ser o género musical mais diversificado e abrangente”.

Para cado ano a organização aposta numa “mostra globalmente forte e equilibrada”, em que todos os concertos “valham a pena” e que seja “ilustrativa daquilo que de melhor hoje se faz na área do jazz, principalmente nos Estados Unidos, mas também em Portugal”.

true that he resists ‘highlighting a single artist’ he cannot help but refer to Gregory Porter, schedule to take to the stage on Saturday, the 16th of July. He is ‘singer whose popularity has gone above and beyond the boundaries of jazz’.

The evening of Saturday will start with Sextexto de Jazz de Lisboa, with Tomás Pimentel (trumpet), Edgar Caramelo (sax tenor), Mário Laginha (piano), Francisco Brito (bass) and Mário Barreiros (drums).

On Thursday, July the 14th, the festival opens to the sound of the classic trio of pianist Hersch, a ‘master and great influence on other great pianists of our time, Bard Mehldau and Jason Moran, for instance’.

Depois é a vez do baterista António Sánchez mostrar por que é que, segundo Paulo Barbosa, “anda nas bocas do mundo”. A razão é ter sido o autor da banda sonora do filme “Birdman” que “entre vários outros prémios,

Our artistic director highlights yet another concert, on the 15th of July, with Rudresh Mahanthappa who, ‘last year alone, earned the titles of best Alto saxophonist and best group according to the critics of JazzTimes as well as those of best Alto saxophonist, jazz album of the year and “Rising Star Composer” according to Downbeat’s critics, just a few awards that join two tens of other awards conquered over the last decade’. To Funchal he brings ‘Bird Calls’, a tribute to saxophonist Carlie Parker, the father of jazz.

In sharp contrast to this concert is the Maria João and Mário Laginha duos’ one.

They will perform together with a quintet as well as accordionist João Frade to open the evening.

While the organizer confess that it was not their explicit intention to do so, they hope that ‘having a voice in each of the festival’s evenings’ will be a plus factor and work to draw in more people.

The festival will also have the Jam Sessions at Scat, with the Ricardo Toscano Quartet, ‘a group dedicated essentially to pieces of music that identify the second of half of the 1950s decade and the first half of the 1960s, most of which authored by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Ornette Coleman’. Scat will also serve as stage for the festival’s presentation

on the 9th of July with the Wilson Correia Trio and the Madeira Jazz Collective’.

Between the 11th and the 15th of July, every afternoon, Avenida Arriaga will act as stage for 6 combo performances by the jazz orchestra of Conservatório Escola das Artes da Madeira. 쐽

7 years after its official opening, the Baía Azul Hotel has reinvented itself.

This hotel belonging to the Cardoso Madeira Hotels group underwent construction works and is now totally remodelled.

The décor was left in the hands of interior designer Giano Gonçalves.

Colours and motifs were inspired by the waters of the Atlantic as the hotel offers a privileged view of the ocean.

Light and harmonious, the décor in shades of white, champagne and navy blue goes hand in hand with the tones of marble and wood. There is a total 215 bedrooms with balconies spread throughout the hotel’s 11 floors.

But more than just changing its décor, the Baía Hotel now has a new SPA area with three massage rooms, a multipurpose room, a sauna, a Turkish bath and an interior pool. Not to mention the exterior pool which was also remodelled.

In the food department, there are two bars and three restaurants: the Atlantic, with themed buffets, the Sal, an Italian restaurant, and the Ocean, an à la carte restaurant and the hotel’s big gastronomic asset. 쐽 www.essential-portugal.com 20

7 Anos após a abertura oficial o Hotel Baía Azul reinventou-se. A unidade do grupo Cardoso Madeira Hotels foi alvo de profundas obras e apresenta-se agora totalmente remodelada.

A decoração esteve a cargo do premiado designer de interiores Giano Gonçalves, que se inspirou no oceano, com cores e motivos relacionados com o Atlântico, que pode ser apreciado a partir do hotel.

A decoração é leve e harmoniosa em tons de branco, champanhe e azul-marinho, além das tonalidades naturais do mármore e das madeiras. No total, são 215 os quartos com varandas que se encontram espalhados pelos 11 pisos da unidade.

Para além das alterações na decoração, o Hotel Baía azul passa a incluir uma nova área de Spa, com três salas de massagens, uma sala polivalente, um ginásio, sauna, banho turco e uma piscina interior. A piscina exterior também foi alvo de remodelações.

A nível da restauração existem dois bares e três restaurantes: O Atlantic, com buffets temáticos; o Sal, um restaurante italiano; e o Ocean, um restaurante à la carte que é a grande aposta gastronómica.

ack in the day, the pier of Ponta do Sol was amongst the most important piers of the west side of the island. Not only was it an area for visitors to arrive at and depart from, it also served to the town’s commerce and sustainability due to the movement of foodstuffs.

Around 1440, with the beginning of the sugar cane trade, Ponta do Sol became one of the island’s main sugar cane producing centres. From a commercial point of view, bananas were also begging to have an impact on the island’s trade activities. It was actually one of the main products being transported between the town and the island’s remaining piers.

Nowadays, there is a firm trying to breathe new life into that route, stopping at Calheta, Câmara de Lobos and Funchal.

Built sometime in the first half of the 19th century, the pier of Ponta do Sol is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Madeira and is one of the town’s hallmarks.

Designed by Titério Blanc, it has a distinctive architectural form, with a showy arch and a view of both the east and west sides of the island, always in search of the sun. 쐽

m tempos, o cais que serve a Ponta do Sol era um dos mais importantes da zona oeste. Dali, para além da chegada e da partida de passageiros, movimentavam-se produtos alimentares, promovendo o comércio e a sustentabilidade da vila.

A introdução da cana sacarina, por volta do ano de 1440, levou a que a Ponta do Sol se tornasse num dos principais centros de produção de açúcar. Além disso, a banana também assumia um importante papel no comércio da época, sendo um dos principais produtos transportados numa rota que ligava a vila aos restantes cais da ilha.

Atualmente, através do transporte de passageiros, uma empresa turística tenta recuperar essa rota, com passagens pela Calheta, Câmara de Lobos e Funchal.

Construído por volta da primeira metade do século XIX, o cais da Ponta do Sol é um dos mais bonitos miradouros da Madeira e um marco do concelho.

Projetado por Tibério Blanc tem uma arquitetura peculiar, com um arco vistoso, com vista para o lado este e para o lado oeste da ilha, sempre à procura do sol. 쐽

Concerts from A to L T

he 25th of June will be the beginning of yet another edition of the L Concerts. Portuguese band D’Alva will be performing the opening act. This Lisbon duo comprising Alex D’Alva Teixeira and Ben Monteiro will be bringing some songs from their #batequebate album for their debut in Madeira. Their style ranges from soul to R&B and has some electronic beats to it.

This summer, until September, will see a series of concerts take place at Estalagem da Ponta do Sol. From the 1st one to the one on the 9th of July, they will be held on Saturdays. From there until august, concerts will take place on Wednesdays. Starting on the 10th of September, they will return to being held on Saturdays.

The program is an eclectic one, it covers Portuguese pop and rock, with at least four national debuts; the wider Lusophone universe, with traditional music from Cape-Verde; and the frenzy of Latin-American music.

It would not be stretch to say that the concerts will go from A to… L! The L Concerts pursue music outside the mainstream as they seek to explore and promote new musical trends and various debuts in the region, as was the case with António Zambujo, Mão Morta, Rão Kyao, JP Simões and Carmen Souza in previous years.

dia 25 de junho marca o início da edição de 2016 dos Concertos L. Os portugueses D’Alva são a banda escolhida para o concerto de abertura. É caso para dizer que há concertos de A a… L! De um pequeno ciclo de concertos com artistas regionais, em 2008, nasceu um evento que já se tornou numa das referências musicais do verão da Madeira.

New Brand Image for the Savoy Hotels & Resorts Keeping the momentum of the Saccharum Hotel Resort & Spa’s anniversary, the Savoy Group launched their new brand image.

To its new logo, the group adds a holiday club for its most frequent guests, the Savoy Vacation Club, and presents its new mascot, Savvy.

The change in branding image comes out of the fact that the AFA business group who owned the Saccharum and Calheta Beach hotels took over the Savoy group in Madeira.

The resulting new ended up with the Savoy hotel brand aggregating all of the group’s hotels: the Royal Savoy, the Savoy Saccharum, the Savoy Calheta Beach and the Savoy Gardens.

The group’s fifth hotel unit is currently being built. The Savoy Palace is expected to open in 2018.

alheta is not short on places where nature is splendorous. Some, you can reach in short amount of time by driving. Others, however, will require you to put your mountain gear on and dive into the wilderness.

Rabaçal is one such place. Just a little over nine miles away from the town of Calheta and at about six hundred and fifty six feet above the level of the ocean, Rabaçal is one of the biggest valleys of Madeira and distinguishes itself for the varied palette of green shades that colour its vegetation.

Every day, early in the morning, there is a massive increase in the number of vehicles that come to the area. Armed with their faithful maps, a guide or a mobile app, the first of the day’s many adventurers arrive.

Many still resort to one of the many firms providing transportation and expert and well-prepared guides.

All without exception come here curious and bearing high expectations as to what nature has store for them. At the end of a long tarmac road going downwards, there are two boards, one pointing towards www.essential-madeira.com 26

A zona do Rabaçal é um desses locais. A cerca de quinze quilómetros da vila da Calheta, a uma altitude perto dos mil metros acima do nível do mar, o Rabaçal é um dos maiores vales da Madeira e distingue-se pela diversidade dos verdes da sua vegetação.

curso a ser de três horas. A segunda é um pouco mais curta, com 3 quilómetros, e a estimativa de tempo necessário para o seu término baixa para metade em relação à anterior. Em ambos os casos, é necessário voltar para trás após a sua conclusão.

Com parte do seu percurso em comum, a sua função, ainda hoje, é a mesma de sempre, aquando se iniciaram a sua construção, em 1835: O transporte de água de zonas onde é abundante para outras onde existe em menor quantidade. Aproveitando a excelente capacidade de captação da precipitação por parte da floresta, essa água destina-se à irrigação e ao consumo.

scarce. Taking full advantage of the collection of the rain that falls in the forest, that water is meant to be used for both consumption and irrigation purposes.

Both paths start at Casa do Abrigo do Rabaçal, a building which, until 1974, was one of the old houses that belonged to the Governor of Madeira and which are to be restored sometime this year.

Upon exiting via one of the recommended courses, one cannot help but feel small before the magnificence of the mountains in the surrounding area.

The hike itself is flows quite naturally.

Going round plenty of curves, water, with a little bit of help from Man, has beaten the mountain and created a place for itself in the landscape. In fact, in some instances, it carved its own path, flowing out of the one man had prepared.

Between the endemic fauna and flora, walkers find themselves torn between the two paths, solitary with those who pass by them. We are at the heart of the Laurel Forest, crowned UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 1999. The vegetation is adorned with heath. If you are lucky, you may find the Trocaz Pidgeon as well as the many busy fish who rush home down the levada.

While walking the path, a silent contest for the perfect picture arises, Tourists and residents alike try to immortalize those seconds through the lenses of their cameras.

Tree trunks, stones and water are the elements of a path that poses very little obstacles. It is actually considered one of the most accessible ones and it is usual to find families and their children walking it.

After several hours, the sound of water is an omen of the end. The Levadas in both paths are a worthy sight, a true spectacle of nature.

The ’25 fontes’ (fountains) got its name from the number of waterfalls that stream into a multi-coloured lagoon. The noise made by the water as it falls is more than enough sound in a place that invites silence and contemplation. In warmer days, why not go for swim among the eyes of the curious fish?

The highlight of ‘Levada do Risco’ is definitely the waterfall that shapes the place, falling from the mountain in a vertiginous manner.

Waterfalls, fountains, lagoons, unique species and sights without peer. Few places hold such beauty in a single spot.

That uniqueness, though, is hidden and only the most curious of adventurers will find it. 쐽

Ambas têm o seu início na Casa de Abrigo do Rabaçal, habitação que, até 1974, era uma das antigas casas atribuídas ao Governador da Madeira e que durante este ano será alvo de recuperação. À saída, por um dos percursos recomendados, é impossível não se sentir pequeno perante a imponência das montanhas à volta do local.

A caminhada desenvolve-se naturalmente.

Entre curvas e contra curvas, a água, com ajuda do homem, venceu a montanha e criou o seu próprio espaço entre a paisagem. Por vezes, ela descobre o seu próprio caminho, saindo do percurso que lhe foi criado.

Entre a flora e a fauna endémica, os caminhantes encontram-se entre as duas direções, solidários com quem passa. Estamos em plena Floresta Laurissilva, elevada, em 1999, a Património Mundial da Humanidade pela UNESCO. Da flora, destacam-se as várias espécies do urzal de altitude. Na fauna, os mais sortudos podem dar de caras com o Pombo Trocaz, para além de vários peixes apressados que fazem da levada a sua casa.

Durante o percurso disputa-se um concurso silencioso pela foto perfeita. Turistas e residentes tentam imortalizar, através das suas objetivas, para sempre, aqueles segundos.

Os troncos, as pedras e a água fazem parte de um percurso pouco atribulado. Este é mesmo considerado como um dos mais acessíveis sendo normal ver famílias, com crianças, por ali.

Após várias horas, o marulhar da água antecipa o final. Ambos, das duas levadas, são de cortar a respiração, um verdadeiro espetáculo da natureza.

As 25 fontes ganharam o nome pelo número de quedas de água que confluem numa lagoa de várias cores. O barulho da água a correr enche-nos os ouvidos num sítio que pede silêncio e contemplação. Nos dias mais quentes, a lagoa convida-nos para um mergulho entre peixes curiosos.

Já na Levada do Risco, o destaque vai para a cascata que dá o seu nome ao local, traçando a vertiginosa montanha.

Cascatas, fontes, lagoas, espécies únicas e vistas singulares. Há poucos sítios que possuem tanta beleza num só local. Essa singularidade está escondida e encontra-se apenas ao alcance dos mais curiosos e aventureiros. 쐽

S

eabirds are those belonging to the order Procellariiformes, pelagic birds - birds that feed only in the open ocean, so coastal birds such as gulls or terns are excluded from this group.

The Madeira archipelago has 47 breeding species of birds, 8 of which are seabirds.

Also called tubenoses, due to their tube-like nostrils, which act as a desalinating system, these birds spend most of their life at sea and only come ashore to nest. This is why they normally choose remote and predator-free islands to breed. To avoid predators they only come ashore at night and that’s why we can only hear them or see their silhouettes when they approach their breeding colony. The best way to observe them is on the open ocean.

Seabirds are migratory, spending their non-breeding winter season at sea. Some migrate to the South Atlantic, others to Brazil and some to the eastern Atlantic around the equator.

In the archipelago, the only seabird present all year round is the Madeiran storm-petrel Oceanodroma castro with two breeding populations: a summer (April to October) and a winter population (October to April). Storm-petrels are small, weigh 35-45gm and are found far from land, feeding on pelagic crustaceans, small fish, oil droplets and plankton.

White-faced storm-petrel Pelagodroma marina has its northernmost Atlantic colony in the Selvagens Islands, returning late December. It is also known as “Jesus Christ bird” due to its way of feeding: hovering with the wings widely open and literally walking/dancing on the water (pattering above the surface). Its observation

Assim, deste grupo excluem-se as gaivotas, guinchos ou garajaus, que são aves costeiras.

O arquipélago da Madeira tem 47 espécies de aves nidificantes, das quais 8 são aves marinhas. Estas passam a maior parte da sua vida no oceano e só vêm a terra para nidificar, daí que escolhem ilhas relativamente remotas e livre de predadores para suas colónias de reprodução. Ainda para evitar predadores estas aves só se deslocam para terra à noite, sendo, por vezes, possível ouvi-las ou ver as suas silhuetas quando se aproximam da sua colónia de reprodução.

As aves marinhas são migradoras e passam a sua estação não reprodutiva ou inverno no oceano, a maioria voa para o Atlântico Sul, umas até às águas do Brasil enquanto outras ficam-se pelo lado Este, na zona do Equador.

No arquipélago da Madeira a única espécie presente o ano inteiro é o Roque de Castro Oceanodroma castro que apresenta duas populações reprodutivas diferentes: a do verão (de abril a outubro) e a do inverno (de outubro a abril). Os Roquinhos ou Paínhos são aves de pequeno porte, com 35 a 45 gramas e que se alimentam longe da costa, de crustáceos, peixe pequeno e plâncton.

O Calcamar ou Paínho-de-ventre-branco Pelagodroma marina regressa às ilhas Selvagens, a sua colónia mais a norte do Atlântico, em finais de dezembro. Quando se

close to Madeira was very rare until Wind Birds, a local birdwatching company, started pelagic expeditions where it is now a common sighting.

On a calendar year the first returning seabirds are Manx shearwaters, Puffinus puffinus which usually return by January and can be seen from the coast. By early February some Cory’s shearwaters Calonectris borealis can be observed at sea.

By March, on a coastal sea trip, the most common species observed are Cory’s shearwaters - the largest breeding seabird in the Archipelago. In lesser numbers, Manx shearwaters - a smaller shearwater with black upper sides and bill and white underparts can be observed.

From March through to October in coastal areas away from light pollution you will hear Cory’s calling with their strange owa-owa-ahh calls. They have the most unusual call out of Madeira’s seabirds and their largest colony is on Selvagens with some 30,000 pairs.

No ano de calendário, as primeiras aves a regressarem às águas da Madeira são os Patagarros Puffinus puffinus, que em janeiro se começam a observar junto à costa. Em inícios de fevereiro já algumas Cagarras Calonectris borealis começam a nos visitar e, em março, numa viagem pela costa da Madeira, a pardela que se observa em maior número e a maior em tamanho é a Cagarra.

Entre março e outubro, em toda a costa da Madeira, em zonas relativamente escuras, é possível ouvir o estranho chamamento da Cagarra: owa-owa-ahh. É a ave com o canto mais peculiar das aves marinhas e a sua maior colónia encontra-se nas Selvagens, com cerca de trinta mil casais.

março, é a Freira da Madeira Pterodroma madeira. Esta ave foi considerada extinta até 1969 e ainda hoje está ameaçada devido à sua reduzida população (cerca de 70 casais reprodutores), à perda de habitat e à predação por ratos e gatos. Ao contrário das outras aves marinhas que fazem os seus ninhos nas falésias costeiras, a Freira da Madeira nidifica no maciço montanhoso central, a 1.700 metros de altitude. A Wind Birds organiza viagens noturnas ao topo da montanha para escutar e tentar observar as silhuetas desta enigmática ave. Uma experiência única, a ser realizada entre abril e agosto!

A Alma-negra Bulweria bulwerii, uma ave totalmente preta, inicia as suas visitas ao ninho em finais de abril, tornando-se então a segunda ave marinha mais comum nos nossos mares.

Muito parecida com a Freira da Madeira é a Freira do Bugio Pterodroma feae que nidifica nas ilhas Desertas e em Cabo Verde. A Freira do Bugio só regressa da sua migração de inverno entre meados e finais de maio. Só os especialistas e ornitólogos experientes da

Essential Wildlife Madeira's special endemic returns from its migration by the end of February/early March; it is Zino’s Petrel, Pterodroma madeira. This species was considered extinct until 1969 and is now still threatened due to its very small population (about 70 known breeding pairs), loss of habitat and predation by rats and cats. In contrast with other seabirds species which have their nests in sea cliffs, Zino’s Petrels nest in the central mountain massif at 1700m. Wind Birds run night tours to the top of the mountains to hear and watch the silhouettes of this enigmatic bird under a starlit sky… A unique experience available between April and August!

Bulwer’s Petrels, Bulweria bulwerii, a totally black bird, known in Madeira as Alma-negra (black soul), start to visit their burrows on sea cliffs by the end of April.

By then it becomes the second most common seabird off the coast, after Cory’s shearwater.

Zino’s Petrel is very similar to Fea’s Petrel Pterodroma feae, which nests on Bugio, Deserta islands and in Cape Verde. Fea's are only back from their winter migration by mid/end of May. Only a close observation at sea will allow the differentiation between these two species. Only Wind Birds have

experienced ornithologists capable of pointing out the difference between these two Pterodroma species at sea.

Nowadays the most difficult tubenose to find at sea is Barolo’s shearwater, an endemic species to the Madeira Archipelago and Canary islands. We note a decline in the numbers of this species, which causes us great concern. Their normal breeding season is between December and May. There are also some seabirds that pass through Madeira on their migration south between mid-August and mid-September, such as Great shearwaters Puffinus gravis and Manx shearwaters - the ones breeding in northern Europe, as the local ones migrate earlier (by July). Other more unusual visiting species are Sooty shearwater Puffinus griseus, Wilson’s storm-petrel Oceanites oceanicus and European storm-petrel Hydrobates pelagicus.

The rarest seabird ever observed on the ocean around Madeira was a Black-bellied storm-petrel Fregetta tropica, an Antarctic bird which was the first confirmed record for the Western Palearctic. This observation was during a Wind Birds pelagic trip.

The ocean is definitely the largest habitat on Earth… 쐽

Wind Birds, são capazes de distinguir, no mar, estas duas espécies de Pterodroma.

Atualmente a ave pelágica mais difícil de se observar no mar é o Pintainho Puffinus baroli, uma espécie endémica dos arquipélagos da Madeira e das Canárias. A população desta espécie tem diminuído nos últimos anos, causando grande preocupação. O seu período reprodutor é entre dezembro e maio.

Existem algumas aves marinhas que, apesar de não nidificarem cá, passam pela Madeira na sua migração para sul, entre meados de agosto e meados de setembro, como a Pardela-de-barrete Puffinus gravis e o Patagarro - o que nidifica no Norte da Europa, pois o da Madeira migra mais cedo, em julho.

Outras espécies menos comuns são a Pardela-preta Puffinus griseus, Paínho-deWilson Oceanites oceanicus e o Paínho-decauda-quadrada Hydrobates pelagicus.

A ave pelágica mais rara alguma vez observada nos mares da Madeira foi um Paínho-de-barriga-preta Fregetta tropica, uma espécie Antártica que, ao ser observada numa viagem pelágica da Wind Birds constituiu o primeiro registo confirmado para o Paleártico Ocidental.

ot so long ago, the fortress of São Tiago housed Madeira’s Contemporary Art Museum. The fortress’ primitive wall still bears the date of its founding, 1614.

As its name suggests, the building is a prime example of military architecture. It was part of the defence system the Portuguese crown had augmented and its purpose was the protection of the bay and city of Funchal. At the time, Portugal was part of the Iberian Union.

The plans and the actual construction of the fortress have been attributed to Jerónimo Jorge though it was his son who, after his death, took it upon himself to finish the building. He also authored a picture in which the fortress appears in its original design, dated 1654.

According to historian Rui Carita in his book “A Arquitectura Militar na Madeira, Séculos XV a XIX – Iconografia e Inventários”, the fortress was remodelled in the 18th century due to doubts regarding its

fortitude. These remodelling works are thought to have been over in 1767, the date found in the new main gate and they were carried out under orders from Governor José Correia de Sá who went to the lengths of acquiring new artillery equipment.

Overseeing them was the Genoese Tossi Columbine who worked for the Portuguese crown and is largely responsible for the shape the fortress has today.

Between this date and the British occupation of the fortress in the context of the Napoleonic wars, in the beginning of the 19th century, the building underwent further works due to some damage caused by the neglect of the people who managed it.

The fortress also served as shelter for families who lost their houses and possessions in the deluge of 1803, in October. The house for the guard and the governor of the fortress was also built in the 19th century.

fortaleza de São Tiago, que albergava até há pouco tempo o Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira, começou a ser construída no ano de 1614, data que ainda se pode ver na porta primitiva.

Como o nome indica, trata-se de um imóvel de arquitetura militar, tendo por objetivo a defesa da baía e da cidade do Funchal. Fazia parte do sistema defensivo mandado incrementar pela coroa portuguesa, que nessa altura estava sob o domínio Filipino.

O desenho e construção da fortaleza, deve ser atribuído a Jerónimo Jorge, que contudo não terminou a obra, tendo o seu filho, Bartolomeu João prosseguido com a mesma, após a sua morte, e é o autor de uma gravura de 1654 onde a fortaleza aparece na sua traça original.

Segundo o historiador Rui Carita, no livro “A Arquitectura Militar na Madeira, Séculos XV a XIX – Iconografia e Inventários”, no século XVIII, devido sobretudo a questões militares, sobre se era suficientemente forte ou não, a fortaleza volta a sofrer obras de ampliação e

Essential Fort melhoramentos, que devem ter terminado em 1767, data que se observa no novo portão principal. Estas obras foram executadas sob as ordens do Governador José Correia de Sá, que inclusive adquiriu novas peças de artilharia para a fortaleza, e dirigidas pelo Genovês ao serviço da Coroa Portuguesa, Tossi Columbina e que no geral deram-lhe a forma, que hoje conhecemos e vemos.

Após esta data e até à ocupação por parte dos militares ingleses, durante o tempo das Guerras Napoleónicas, no início do século XIX, assistiu-se a uma degradação e desleixo na manutenção da fortaleza, o que fez com que estes tivessem feito algumas obras de beneficiação.

Em 1803, devido à grande aluvião que ocorreu em outubro desse ano, foram recolhidas e alojadas no forte famílias que tinham perdido as suas habitações e haveres. É também no século XIX que foram construídas as casa do governador da fortaleza e da guarda.

No início do século XX, aquando da visita do Rei de Portugal, D. Carlos, são realizados

The fortress was given to the Autonomous Region in 1992 who used it for cultural purposes, namely, a future military museum and a Contemporary Art Museum.

alguns melhoramentos, que segundo os historiadores, almoçou na fortaleza, numa tenda instalada para o efeito, num dos pátios interiores, após ter assistido a um serviço religioso, no campo denominado então de D. Carlos, mas que anteriormente se chamava de Santiago e que mais tarde, com a implantação da República se irá chamar de Almirante Reis.

A fortaleza servia então de quartel a uma unidade de artilharia, tendo tido sempre, até ser entregue à Região Autónoma, uma utilização militar. Estão referenciadas algumas obras de remodelação e beneficiação, nos anos setenta do século XX. A fortaleza foi cedida à Região Autónoma em 1992, que resolve ali instalar atividades culturais nomeadamente um futuro museu militar e o Museu de Arte Contemporânea.

Com a saída do Museu Arte Contemporânea, é intenção da Região de dar novos usos ao espaço agora vazio, com a instalação, no futuro, de um museu de Arqueologia da Madeira. 쐽

icture a watch able to materialise and assemble notions such as free spirit, aesthete, elegance, style, instinct, passion, confidence and modernity. This is how Cartier describes its latest creation in the field of timekeeping, linking it to a certain attitude and state of mind, far from mundane existence and closer to the true art of knowing how to live.

The new Drive de Cartier is for a man, which the French design house says cannot be categorised. A notion of an apparently simple man, but who ends up revealing a sophisticated personality and image, the main talent of whom is a natural aptitude for singular style and freedom.

It is therefore no surprise that, with this description, we end up visualising a man who appreciates the finer things in life and the pleasure that these things can bring him. Or, in other words, the secret ambition of anyone who sees their image as an extension of their very personality.

From this perspective, watches are used as a reflection of the person wearing them, moving away from mere status symbol and proof of personal success, and denoting rather a particular appreciation of the beauty intrinsic to the object and of the arts that gave rise to it. Just like the car driven by this “Cartier” man, who turns out to be a connoisseur sensitive to form, to the precision of bodywork, to the right tonality of a patina, to the emotion that driving brings him.

The new Drive de Cartier aims to be the wristwatch of a passionate man, in a nod to models from the past inspired precisely in motor cars. Already famed

examples, such as the Roadster or the Must 21 Autoscaph, marked a period of success for the ‘maison’, with the distinctive shape of their cases and the many details on their dials invoking a look that is increasingly absent from cars made today.

The Drive de Cartier continues this tradition, in which ‘guilloché’ decorative patterning on the dials brings to mind the design of a radiator grill and the winding crown takes on the shape of a screw head.

Even the finishes seem to have been made to meet the precise parameters required by the connoisseur, in which textured satin finishes on the sides alternate with polished surfaces on the top of the watch.

Available with cases in pink gold or steel, dials in black, grey or white, accompanied by the traditional Roman numerals that are present in so many of the brand’s creations, the new Drive de Cartier also offers different options in terms of its manufacture mechanical mechanisms, and as a result, of the information the watch can relay.

And if in the simplest model, which tells the hours, minutes, date and has a small second dial at 6 o’clock, the rhythm is assured by the 1904-PS MC automatic movement, Cartier has prepared another version with the 1904-FU MC movement, which adds a second time zone, a day/night indicator and a large date indicator at 12 o’clock.

But fine watchmaking has not been forgotten, with the inclusion in the collection of a version featuring a flying tourbillon, joined by an embossed dial. The 9452 MC movement comes, of course, with the traditional ‘Poinçon de Genève’ certification.

The complication you would most associate with a sports watch is missing, but Cartier will certainly have saved its launch for date yet to be announced.

The chronograph should definitely give the Drive de Cartier the final touch of sophistication you would expect from a watch aimed at accompanying you at the wheel of a classic car, hurtling down that mythical road towards the sunset.

Disponível com caixas em ouro rosa ou aço, mostradores antracite, cinza ou branco, sempre acompanhados pela tradicional numeração romana que marca presença em tantas criações da marca, o novo Drive de Cartier permite também uma opção ao nível da complexidade dos seus mecanismos mecânicos de manufatura e, consequentemente, na informação que o relógio pode comunicar.

E se no modelo mais simples, com indicação de horas, minutos, data e segundos às 6 horas, a cadência é assegurada pelo calibre de corda automática 1904-PS MC, a Cartier preparou uma outra versão com o calibre 1904-FU MC que acrescenta segundo fuso horário retrógrado, indicação de dia-noite e opta por uma grande data às 12 horas.

Mas a alta relojoaria não foi esquecida tendo sido incluída na coleção através de uma versão com turbilhão voador que é acompanhado por um mostrador em relevo. O movimento do calibre 9452 MC de corda manual está, como não podia deixar de ser, certificado com o tradicional Punção de Genebra.

Fica a faltar a complicação que mais associamos a um relógio desportivo, e que a Cartier terá certamente guardado para um lançamento posterior ainda não agendado. he new Volvo XC90 arrived in Portugal about a year ago, but the effect of this arrival is still being felt. The top-ofthe-range Volvo has replaced what was the first SUV from the Swedish manufacturer and is charged with continuing the saga of its incredible success all around the world.

Volvo is enjoying a very encouraging phase in terms of product range and sales figures and the XC90 is the standardbearer for the new design philosophy from the group, to be joined shortly by the S90

and the V90. Of traditional good looks, and classic, timeless lines, the XC90 is possibly, the most attractive SUV on today’s market, packing a punch on the roads to easily rival the leading names in the segment, for the most part German. Some details, such as the T-shaped running lights, referred to as ‘Thor’s hammer’, set the XC90 apart from its rivals.

The all-wheel drive versions can easily cope with any off-road challenge, even though most customers never get to use this facet of what is the best Scandi SUV of all time.

The interior is sumptuous, offering a combination of high-quality materials and extraordinary comfort levels, even for the Swedish icon. The inside of the XC90 is way ahead of the competition, focusing the controls in a touch screen and adopting minimalist design, giving it a touch of class that is very particular to the new Swedish idol. Options include a 19-speaker, 1400-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Apple CarPlay infotainment integration. In practical terms, the XC90 has seven seats and can transport passengers of up to 1.70m in the third row.

The top of the range is the T8 Twin Engine AWD, a plug-in hybrid, which combines 318 horsepower from a 2-litre petrol turbo engine, with 82 horsepower delivered by an electric motor. The 400 horsepower and 40 km in electric mode resulting from this combination make this one of the most interesting hybrids on the market.

The twin turbo D5 is likely to be the bestseller, with its 2-litre, 225-hp diesel engine and fuel consumption announced at 6 litres/100 km, but the entry model, the D4, with 190 horsepower, 8-speed automatic gearbox, front wheel drive and ‘Classe 1’ on Portugal’s toll roads, will certain have something to say about that.

Whatever version, the XC90 is one of the best cars in the world at the moment, and proof of the astounding vitality of the Swedish car industry. 쐽

asino Circus Show’ is Casino da Madeira’s new offer for Thursday evenings. For 45 minutes, the Bahia Restaurant serves as stage for a show produced by the Madeiran firm Paradise Circus Ltd. A total of eight dancers led by Michelle Caires bring life to a show set to the voice of Cristina Barbosa.

The show will be on until October. It tells the story of a young female dancer full of dreams who finds herself in a Circus that has seen better days. Through combined effort of singer and dancer the show becomes a memorable one in which music, dancing and circus acts abound.

The ticket for the ‘Casino Circus Show’ include a three course dinner and sell for 45 euros per person.

Other than the main event, dinner service will also have the participation of pianist Chico Martins followed by a performance by the ‘Miguel Pires & The Bubblers’ band, performing several international hits starting at 8:50 p.m.

At the end of the night, true dancers will have the chance to show off their moves with the Bahia restaurant’s resident DJ providing the music.

The festas of Porto Santo

O

ne of the highlights in the tourism calendar of Porto Santo is the festas, the celebrations held in honour of the popular saint St John, or São João as he is known among locals. Simultaneously, the event commemorates the 181 years of the municipality. This year, it will be held between the 22nd and 26th of June with activities catering to all tastes.

In between the town’s iconic ice creams and stalls loaded with plenty of food and beverages, visitors will have to be prepared for two intense and lively days on the island. The first day will have, as usual, a parade with the children from the all the schools around the island.

The next day is the main attraction. In between vases of basil and bonfires, people’s eyes will be set on the parades, the Marchas as they are called, and the altar of São João. In their flashy costumes, the troupes of participants will parade down the main streets of Porto Santo.

Lectures and several sports events will be complemented by a strong investment in the event’s musical side. 쐽

m dos momentos mais importantes no calendário turístico do Porto Santo é a celebração das festas de São João, que assinalam, ao mesmo tempo, os 181 do concelho. Este ano, o evento realiza-se entre os dias 22 e 26 de junho, com atividades para todos os gostos.

Festas da Calheta CALHETA

Internationally renowned fado singer Mariza is the poster face for the celebrations of Calheta’s municipality which coincide with the feast of São João, the town’s patron saint. Diego Miranda, Pedro Casanova and DJ Nélio Fabrício are the guest artists. There will also be parades in St John’s Eve. Representatives from the town’s eight parishes will parade down Avenida D. Manuel I. These festivities will also commemorate the 514 years that have passed since Calheta was made a city.

O Arraial do Monte é o mais famoso arraial da ilha. Durante dois dias, a freguesia celebra aquela que é mesmo considerada como a principal festa de devoção popular da região: A Festa da Nossa Senhora do Monte. The new legal status for animals O

n the table, are a set of initiatives that seek to create a new legal status for animals, increase the sentences for their abandonment and maltreatment and establish animalicide as a new crime.

In 2014, the Portuguese parliament ratified the criminalization of the maltreatment and abandonment of animals. Right now, the discussion centres on the approval of a juridical regime seeking to create a new juridical category for animals.

From a juridical point of view, animals will no longer be regarded as things but, rather, as sentient beings.

This change puts Portugal at the legislative forefront in what concerns animal rights, similarly to what already happens in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France.

Luckily, the Portuguese society is starting to look at how pets are treated with different eyes.

Under the new legal status, should a pet perish, its owner will be entitled to be indemnified and, in the case of a divorce, the spouse holding custody of the pet will have to be legally specified.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira was the first in the country to prohibit the slaughter of abandoned pets. 쐽

Em 2014 o parlamento português aprovou a criminalização dos maus tratos e do abandono dos animais. Neste momento discute-se a aprovação de um novo regime jurídico que pretende criar uma nova categoria jurídica para os animais.

Os animais passam, do ponto de vista jurídico, a deixar de ser vistos como coisas, para serem entendidos como seres sensíveis.

Com esta alteração Portugal passará a estar na vanguarda legislativa no que concerne aos direitos dos animais, à semelhança do que acontece já com países como a Alemanha, Áustria, Suíça e França.

Felizmente, em Portugal, a sociedade começa a olhar de uma forma diferente para os animais de companhia.

Com o novo estatuto jurídico, em caso de morte dos animais de companhia, o proprietário terá direito a uma indemnização e em caso de divórcio terá de ser estipulado qual o cônjuge que ficará com a responsabilidade do animal de companhia.

A Região Autónoma da Madeira foi a primeira região do país a proibir o abate de animais de companhia abandonados. 쐽

uinta da Serra has become the first hotel in Madeira to be biologically certified for both its agricultural production and dining services. The certification awarded to the hotel attests that the majority of produce grown on the estate the hotel is a part of are of biological origin and will not expire until June 2017.

Where dining is concerned, the hotel was already certified, in 2015, and was actually the first in Portugal to be so. Their certification is of ‘Bronze/ 30-60%’ level and is valid until June. The grading means that most of the products they serve are of biological origin.

The produce that earned the certificate are used exclusively in the meals served at the hotel. Adding to the inherent quality in it being biological, the produce also ensure ‘freshness for our dining services resulting in delighted guests, customers and friends’, as stated in a press release by Quinta da Serra.

Still in that release, the award of the biological certificate ‘comes out of a clear effort to make a difference via our product based on the Quality and Personalization of our services as well as on a strong Biological and Eco-friendly component complemented by a team of competent and efficient professionals.’

Quinta da Serra’s commitment to a biological side has been one of its trademarks since its reopening in 2014 and seeks to take advantage of the more than 345 acres of its estate placed in a more than 2624 feet high valley. 쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 74

A produção agrícola que acaba de obter certificação, é utilizada exclusivamente na confeção de refeições no próprio hotel. Esta produção, além da qualidade associada ao fato de ser biológica, garante “frescura à nossa restauração, o que resulta no agrado dos nossos hóspedes, clientes e amigos”, refere um comunicado da Quinta da Serra.

Segundo a mesma nota, a obtenção das certificações biológicas “é fruto de uma clara aposta numa diferenciação do nosso produto, baseado na Qualidade e Personalização dos serviços prestados, bem como numa forte componente Biológica e Eco-friendly, complementada por uma equipa de profissionais competentes e prestáveis”.

A aposta da Quinta da Serra na vertente biológica foi assumida desde a reabertura do hotel, em 2014 e procura tirar partido dos cerca de 140 hectares da propriedade, encaixada num vale a cerca de 800 metros de altitude. 쐽

The product that finds its way to your table is but the end of a process that begins with the harvesting of sugarcane.

After being transported to the factory, the canes are inserted in two mills from which the sugarcane syrup itself is extracted.

The liquid is then routed to its first filtration.

It is then taken to a secondary settlement tank, boiled and filtered. This complex process ensures a perfected and refined product.

The next stage has the liquid continue its boiling process by using an evaporator to vaporise what water it still has. In the last stage there is a new boiling and a last filtration before the syrup is finally taken to a vacuum boiler.

To finish, Fábrica do Ribeiro Sêco’s sugarcane syrup is transferred to a tank to sit and cool down naturally. The whole of this elaborate production process takes place in approximately 22 hours.

ogério Calhau has taken an interest in cooking since he was a small child. His decision of turning it into a career, though, came much later. At age 26, he was living in England and did know what to do with his life. On the 2nd of January of the year 2000, the now chef at Casa Velha do Palheiro decided to go to London in search of an opportunity.

And an opportunity he quickly found. Éric Chavot, chef at The Capital Restaurant, and holder of Michelin star gave him a chance: ‘I was given two months to learn everything’, shares Rogério Calhau who thus started his career in the culinary world, close to the stars.

‘After six months we were awarded our second Michelin star’, he reveals. He stayed at that restaurant for three years but his role in award-winning establishments was far from over. He opened another restaurant with Chef Tom Aiken: ‘In ten months we were awarded the star, named the best restaurant and elected the seventh best restaurant in the World’. Looking back at all of this, Rogério Calhau says he was ‘lucky to work with good chefs’.

Casa Velha’s The Dining Room has been his new challenge since the beginning of the year. The change of chef is already mirrored in the change. Passion is the word he chooses to qualify what he added to the restaurant. He explains: ‘I’m more focused on flavours than on presentation’.

The idea is to try and use local products.

But the top priority is using what he can find locally and in each season. ‘When the products of Madeira are of consistent quality they are given priority in the menu’, says the chef for whom cuisine ‘is the product’.

While rejecting the notion of fusion cuisine he considers it inevitable that a

A 2 de janeiro de 2000, o agora chefe da Casa Velha do Palheiro decidiu rumar a Londres à procura de oportunidades na grande cidade.

A sorte sorriu depressa. Éric Chavot, chefe do The Capital Restaurant, com uma estrela Michelin deu-lhe uma oportunidade: “Deu-me dois meses para aprender tudo” conta Rogério Calhau, que assim começou a carreira na cozinha, a conviver de perto com as estrelas.

“Ao fim de seis meses ganhámos a segunda estrela Michelin”, revela. A passagem por esse restaurante durou três anos, mas a ligação aos espaços premiados iria continuar. Foi abrir um outro restaurante, com o chefe Tom Aiken: “Em dez meses ganhámos a estrela, fomos eleitos o melhor restaurante, sétimo melhor restaurante do Mundo”. Por tudo isto Rogério Calhau conclui que teve “sorte em trabalhar com bons chefes”.

A Casa Velha Dining Room é o novo desafio, desde o início deste ano. A carta já reflete as mudanças do novo chefe. Paixão é a palavra que utiliza para descrever o que introduziu no conceito do restaurante. Depois explica: “Concentro-me mais em sabor do que em apresentação”.

A lógica é tentar usar produtos locais. Mas a prioridade é o que consegue encontrar localmente e em cada estação. “Quando os produtos na Madeira têm qualidade e consistência têm prioridade na carta”, explica o chefe, para quem a cozinha “é o produto”.

Rejeita a ideia de cozinha de fusão, mas considera inevitável que um prato sofra influências de outros pratos e das vivências do chefe. No caso de Rogério Calhau a passagem por Mascate, capital de Omã, foi determinante.

dish be influenced by others and by the life experiences of the chef. For Rogério Calhau, it was his stay in Mascate, the capital of Oman, played a key role. ‘It exposed me to other cultures’. There he learned how to work spices by establishing contact with Arabs, Thais, Philippines and Vietnamese people.

That experience is reflected in his dishes, where aromas blend harmoniously and create a cuisine described by the chef as ‘intense and complex’.

A tasting menu is a flavourful experience, illustrative of cultural background bit it Madeiran or international. The trout bread in Seixal, seasoned with fennel, is in sharp contrast with the oriental wasabi sauce. Examples abound: soup, pees tofu, peppermint and Pata Negra ham; roasted langoustine, pork belly and truffle sauce; red porgy, feijoada with chorizo, parsley, garlic, chilli pepper and piquillo pure; Pidgeon, schnitzel with celery, spinach and chanterelle; and for those who have a sweet tooth, Abade de Priscos flan pudding, pear, Madeira wine textures; and pineapple Carpaccio, exotic fruits mousse and champagne granizado.

Influences notwithstanding, Rogério Calhau sees himself as an author of Portuguese cuisine. The concept itself is constantly evolving and rising in popularity beyond borders. Long gone are the days when food made in Portugal had no place in the rest of the world.

This is a style that is in agreement with the chef ’s notion that customers seek a concession between international references and an element of what is local: ‘If I were a customer, I’d rather eat a quality meal made from local products than one that came from somewhere else’.

At Casa Velha do Palheiro he intends to cook food which is ‘simple and tasty’ and, above all, consistent.

In Portugal, he also worked in the Algarve between 2011 and 2014. Taking up the challenge of working in Madeira was his choice of staying in the country. Otherwise, Chef Rogério Calhau would be working in China. 쐽

Os exemplos multiplicam-se: Sopa, tofu de ervilha, hortelã e Pata Negra; Lagostins assados, barriga de porco e molho trufado; Pargo, feijoada com chouriço, salsa de alho e malagueta e puré de piquillo; Pombo, panado de aipo bola, espinafres, canterelos; e para adoçar a boca Pudim Abade de Priscos, pera, texturas de vinho da Madeira; e Carpaccio de ananás, mousse de frutos exóticos, granizado de champanhe.

Apesar das influências, Rogério Calhau assume ser autor de uma cozinha portuguesa, um conceito que tem evoluído e ganho fama internacional. Longe vão os tempos em que a comida feita em Portugal era desconhecida do Mundo.

Este estilo vem ao encontro da ideia que o chefe defende, de que os clientes procuram um encontro entre as referências internacionais, com um toque local:“Eu, se fosse cliente, preferia comer uma coisa de grande qualidade que fosse daqui, do que uma que viesse de outra parte do Mundo”.

Na Casa Velha do Palheiro assume querer fazer uma comida “simples e saborosa”, mas acima de tudo consistente.

Em Portugal passou também pelo Algarve, onde trabalhou entre 2011 e 2014. O desafio de viajar para a Madeira foi uma opção de querer ficar no país. Se não o tivesse feito, o chefe Rogério Calhau estaria a trabalhar na China. 쐽

This is not the product of chance though, as The Dining Room restaurant is actually in the dining room of a house that belonged to the owners of Quinta da Casa Branca. Their ancestors were a family of merchants and Madeira wine producers who settled on the island in the 18th century.

The hotel decided to reopen the main house, a 20th century building where besides a set of suites, they installed their new main restaurant.

In an estate that has more than 6.6 thousand acres of banana tree plantations not to mention their beautiful gardens, there is only tranquillity to be enjoyed.

The challenge of deciding on the restaurant’s course was left in the hands of Madeiran chef Carlos Magno, one of the new wave of Madeiran cuisine’s key figures trying to promote products from the island.

His cuisine derives inspiration from the Mediterranean but Carlos Magno claims that he does ‘everything he can to work with regional products’. He is committed to fresh products like the Madeira’s fish and vegetables.

But above all, he seeks a creative cuisine: ‘that’s how I like to work’, he remarks.

Balancing such products of international fame as lamb, Blank Angu fillet or crab with regional products, the chef arrives at a menu with some winning dishes: Brown Crab and Prawn Salad with Avocado; Smoked Mackerel with Vegetable Pickles and Cider in a Yellow Pepper Emulsion or even the Green Asparagus Cream Soup with Cottage Cheese. Not to mention the Grilled Black Angus Fillet, Garlic Mousse, Vegetables Sautéed Flavoured with Smoked Sea Salt; the Sautéed Lamb Loin over Couscous

Drizzled with an Arabic Coffee Sauce; or the Bass with Dry Tomato Risotto.

In every dish, there is a delicate balance to be found. Always with a dash of what is local and inspiration drawn from beyond the nation’s borders. Carlos Magno discloses that one of his next investments will be in the growth of herbs on the estate.

Next to the restaurant will blossom an orchard with herbs ‘such as curry plant, tarragon, purple ruffles basil, lemon basil, sage or mustard’.

The Dining Room is only open for dinner and their menu will not limit itself to the most sought after dishes; it will try to reflect the different seasons of the year.

Entrees will always be paired with a glass of good wine.

Every other dish will have a specific wine associated with it in the form of a suggestion in a predominantly Portuguese wine list. Most of the wines on offer can be ordered by the glass, an option which allows guests to build their own tasting menu, by combining dishes with different wines.

The dishes conceived by Carlos Magno seems as though it were actually meant to be enjoyed in the cosiness of a dining room or in the relaxed atmosphere of a garden. It brings to mind homemade food, served in a family house, of course. 쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 84

Penha Mar Restaurant Located in the Quinta da Penha de França Mar hotel, the Penha Mar restaurant has reopened its doors for the summer season, until the 29th of October.

Located in Penha de França Mar, one of the two parts of this unit established in 1989, the restaurant allows for a meal by the shore with a menu focused on Mediterranean and regional cuisine.

There is musical entertainment every night with a program that ranges from folk to fado and international music.

The space is open from Wednesday to Saturday, exclusively for dinner service between 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

White Party at the Belmond Reid’s Palace The area surrounding the pool restaurant of the legendary Belmond Reid’s Palace is all dressed in white for its well-known White Party, an event which has become a hallmark of summer, this year to be held on the 16th of July.

The party opens at 7:30 p.m. in a space decorated for the occasion with a relaxed and sophisticated environment as well as a view of the Bay of Funchal, and a cocktail on arrival. There is then a buffet dinner in the event’s usual intimate ambience.

This year, there will be some surprises.

Throughout the evening, musical entertainment will be left in the hands of the hotel’s band, Adler’s Band. As for the dress code, nothing simpler: White!

Desserts are no exception to this rice tradition, one “must” on the sweets menu is the delicious Thai black rice with coconut milk served with fresh mango slices or alternatively a sweet rice ice cream.

The restaurant is an architectural masterpiece, tastefully decorated, which blends in harmoniously to the quaint neighbouring buildings. Besides the top floor there is a covered veranda, which is used all year around taking full advantage of the region’s temperate climate.

Blandy launches Atlantis White Almost three decades after having launched the first Madeiran table wine, the Atlantis Rosé, Blandy’s, the firm producing Madeira Wine for two centuries, launched a white wine. Also bearing the Atlantis brand, it is produced 100% from the verdelho grape variety.

It is a light and fruity white wine made from grapes grown in Raposeira, Calheta, one of the best places where this grape is grown. This wine rested in stainless steel tanks and has an alcohol volume of 11.5%.

Presented together with it was the Atlantis Rosé, from 2015. It is a wine made from Tinta Negra, with grapes grown on the slope of Campanário and Câmara de Lobos. It has an alcohol volume of 10.5% and is a clear, dry and fruity rosé.

Both wines are the responsibility of oenologist Francisco Albuquerque.

Madeira with a touch of feminine Cooperative Agrícola do Funchal became the youngest Madeira Wine producing firm.

Through Madeira Vintners, a brand created in 2013 for the production of sweet wines, it presented a 3 year old Madeira Wine.

The Madeira Vintners is not blended with other older wines and is therefore, lighter and less complex. It is true three-year old whose age is not an averaged one, unlike the other products in the market.

What is so unique about it is that it is made by an all-female team who was present throughout the whole process, from supporting the farmers to the production and bottling of the wine.

Cooperativa Agrícola do Funchal was established in 1951 aggregating 19 thousand associates. Madeira Vintners is the name given to a business area related to the production and commercialization of Madeira Wine and has existed since 2013.

Quase três décadas após ter lançado o primeiro vinho de mesa madeirense, o Atlantis Rosé,a Blandy,empresa que há dois séculos produz Vinho Madeira, lançou um vinho branco.É também da marca Atlantis,mas produzido 100 por cento a partir da casta verdelho. The creation and preparation of dishes starts in the countryside, with the producers. This is where this restaurant, which focuses on regional products, finds ingredients for a contemporary twist on a cuisine with a regional flavour.

To these ingredients, others are added, such as lobster, foie gras, scallops, sea bream, duck and lamb. In each dish there is always an ingredient, a seasoning, or a little touch from traditional Madeiran cuisine.

There is wheat, corn, organic chicken, tuna,

fresh cheese from Santo da Serra, vegetables and fruits from the property itself.

There are also pastas, vegetarian options and a few more famous dishes, all featured on the ‘Quinta do Furão Tradition’ menu.

Here diners will find ‘Beef Caldeirão Verde’ (comprised of beef wrapped in filo pastry with Roquefort cheese), kebabs, fillet of black scabbard fish and potions of limpets, among other dishes.
